Amazing guy, lectures are terrific, though most think class kinda hard anyway.
still teaching world civ? i took both in 1994!

The class content is very difficult. Tons of memorization but he makes it interesting and makes class easier to take
Boring and difficult. Take the class with Boyd! He rocks!
I thought he was a great teacher, especially for a huge lecture.
Really excellent lectures - interesting, informative, and entertaining.
Great guy and will go above and beyond the call of duty to help you out.
He was an extremely great guy, and always went above the normal professor to help you out. He actually answered your questions quickly, as if he knew what he was talking about (pity he's one of the few thus far).
Awesome class, lots of reading, a couple of papers, amazing professor!
Really knows his stuff. If you have trouble he will help you in any way he can, tough tests, overall great prof
I pulled my first ever all-nighter before the final and still managed to get an "A". Ah, memories of '94 ---
World Civ, I remember he used to post the keypoints to the lecture on the board, and when he would mention that topic my friend and I would be happy because we felt like we were doing out job. Great teacher for the topic though. Got us through boht World Civ pretty well.
Excellent teacher! He really connects with his students. He writes important names and events on the board before the lecture so you have an easy study guide for tests. His workload is a good amount of reading, and a 8-10 page paper (which you have 2 months to do). His tests require alot of writing, but not hard if you read the text and attend.
TONS of memorization. but prof. mcguire is a very friendly (and occasionally funny) guy, so its not TOO bad
He is very good in the sense that he keeps the class interesting, but sometimes it seems he goes so far from the book that you not sure how to study for exams.
Because the class is early I fall asleep but other than that this guy at least tries to make the lecture interesting, if not then he is just naturally.
Mcguire is a nice guy and if you actually try listening he can be interesting and funny. only 1 paper and 2 exams which were easy if you did at least most of the work
He's a really nice guy, but he gives a lot of work and is a really harsh grader.
He made UGC interesting
professor mcguire tries his hardest to keep the class interested. he talkes a lot about his trips and what he has seen. overall he is a good teacher. intimidating at first. MUST STUDY FOR EXAMS- he grades pretty tough
Very charismatic Fun teacher, someone to enjoy learning from
If you go to lectures and recitation you'll probably be alright. Make sure to go to the end of the year review session too. It's like an hour long and will give you a clear understanding of what you need to study which will save you a few (finals week) hours. If your smart but lazy, you could easily skim by with a B without a ton of effort.
tends to rant about useless things not really focusing on what we need to know for his exam.
I was not interseted in history before I came to this class but Dr. Mcguire really captivated me with his funny stories and more then surface analyzation of the material. His tests can be a little difficult but are straight forward and if you study you will be fine. Recommended!
A great professor with good TA's very good lectures and studying for his tests are fairly easy just memorize the terms and read the books and you should be fine
lectures are interesting and straightforward. Tests are pretty straightforward too, isn't hard to do well if you go to lecture
A very fair class. Attendance is mandatory because of quizzes every 3-4 classes. Out of class work is easy but a bit tedious like the 8-10 page final paper. Know terms and literary passages that have been stressed and you will do fine on the exams.
Really fun and funny teacher. His humor is a little dry but hilarious if you like those types of jokes. Memorize the terms and primary readings and you'll do fine. Tests are very straight forward and pretty much all mezmorization. Definetly recommend Professor E. Brilliant.
Professor McGuire is a really interesting teacher.Attend class, do the assigned readings and take notes, and you'll be fine. Most of the people who didn't do well on the midterm/final are the one's who didn't attend lecture. Attend the review session w/ him before exams..EXTREMELY helpful. He basically tells you what to study. Recommended!
He is definitely a scatterbrain. Half the time you will have no idea what he is talking about but he makes sure you know everything he thinks is important. since he makes the tests, if you go to lecture its an easy class
Fairly difficult tests and the final paper is absolutely ridiculous. He is a pretty good lecturer though. Overall way too much work for a gen ed.
The man has so much swag. Doc McGuire is an awesome professor, best world civ professor def recommend! Weekly quizes in recitation which are easy and grade boosters. Only midterm, final, and final paper. Go to his reviews before the exams and he basically tells you whats on the exams.
The man definitely knows his stuff and clearly has a deeply invested interest in the subject. More importantly, he makes himself very accessible to students with questions. As long as you pay attention in his lectures and possibly attend pre-exam reviews, you'll do just fine in his class.
He is a great professor and really knows what he's talking about. the class isn't a cake-walk but his teaching style keeps you interested and as long as you are attentive and listen during lecture, you'll be fine. I definetly recommend him to everyone taking UGC111 and UGC112!!!
Prof McGuire is amazing!!!. Go to class study the lectures and you should be fine. Reading the book is very helpful but not necessary. I would also recommend to go to his office hours if you need help. He is really helpful and just wants you to do good. Besides he's really cool and nice. Def recommend you to take his class.
Professor McGuire is a great guy, very funny and easy to listen to. He gets off track in his lectures sometimes and almost always ran past the 50 minute class time. His tests are fair but difficult if you don't keep up with the readings. I would recommend him to a student who is diligent and willing to work for their grade.
AMAZING!!! Beyond the fact that he is easily one of the most intelligent professors you're likely to have, he teaches in a very understandable way. Tests=largely lecture & outside reading assignments (easy if you can at least seem like you read or listened) overall a very enjoyable class and I would take it again
He is one of the best profs. for UGC112. Obviously if you couldnt get T.boyd take this professor. All I recommend is go to class take notes, and read txtbook. Don't be sloppy.
He teaches 111 and 112 and I have him for both semesters and have never been more excited. Don Mcguire is by far the professor to get if you want to do well and actually have a good time doing so rather than being bored to death for an hour. His TAs are awesome most times and he is very dedicated to what he teaches. Just put work in youll be fine
I am a very good student and I don't usually have trouble focusing in class, but Prof. McGuire made it so difficult to stay awake. He's obsessed with Turkey (the country), and he has an infatuation with pottery. He's knowledgable, but unless you want to learn about Turkish dinner plates for at least half of every lecture, pick a different professor
He has a funny personality. Lectures are fun to attend, but hard to take notes. If you got Avrill as your TA, then you will probably get a really good grade. His tests have no multiple choices at all. The research paper is fun (you can pick whatever movie you like). I did my paper on pirates and got 94/100.
One of the reasons why I switched to be a History major, McGuire has an excellent personality and sense of humor. Class is also a fairly easy A. I'd take any of his classes.
Great Teacher but you must attend class!
He wasn't the easiest professor ever, but was extremely fair. As long as you put a little effort in, you will get an A. Very helpful and is an awesome guy. I would highly recommend to anyone.
His class may be a lot of work but he is a great teacher.
HE IS THE MAN!!! He has so much swag. His class was really fun I thought. He is a great guy. Totally cool to talk to and very helpful. He is very passionate about my work. I didn't take 112 when I found out his class was full. I really loved him. Definitely give this guy a chance.
worst. professor. ever. he's way too smart to teach anyone, pretty much a scatterbrain-lectures jump from here and there. unless you pay really careful attention and take notes like crazy, you won't get anything out of this class. INCREDIBLY BORING. and taking the recitation with him as the instructor? horrible idea. he doesn't go over stuff.
Donny is a straight up BEAST!! His tests are very fair and there isn't a ton of work you have to do but he does give you a lot of online readings. Recitation is very helpful and there are quizzes every week so make sure you attend lecture! But Donny is a very good prof and i recommend him for world civ.
I loved Professor McGuire! His lectures can sometimes be difficult to pay attention to, but he knows so much and has such a passion for what he is teaching. He was my recitation teacher as well which was super helpful for clarification of material. The midterm and final are fairly difficult though. Be ready to study and you will be fine!
Dr. McGuire is a very smart guy, but his lectures are very hard to follow. He spews information and none of it is on the slides, just pictures and small blurbs. His class is interesting, but you'll want to pick a TA other than him and take very good notes in recitation to do well. He provides plenty of review though- take advantage!
So his lecture is really boring. Like really boring. I mean seriously I wanted to sleep. BUT to prevent myself from doing so, I took notes which ended up being really helpful for the essays. Honestly you'll do fine if you take notes and skim each weeks readings but be warned: he's hard to follow and always talks about study abroad for 15min
He is the only professor at UB that I have actually gotten to know. He is a great guy,he is always around campus which makes it easy to get to know him. His lectures are pretty boring but he is worth taking. pay attention to the random things he says in lecture because he makes the tests and he will test on that. It makes it easy if you go to class
His lectures are confusing, and his tests were based more on writing ability than actual historical knowledge. It's an easy class, but too much work is expected for a 3 credit gen ed. I wouldn't recommend this class.
Overall a good professor. But its a lot of work. six 2page essays and one 7-8 page final paper. U need to do the reading for the quiz every week. He loves turkey, give in class quizzes for attendance bonus (What is your name, what color you like.) He is a really smart guy, and pretty entertaining. Take him if you can.
Do take Professor McGuire's UGC 111. It's an informative and interesting class. Make sure that you're able to access UBL, there's required participation on the discussion board. Don't be late handing stuff in; go to the lectures, and approach with an open mind. If you do the work, proving that you've given the material thought, you'll get an A.
He tends to ramble a bit in his lectures but he is clearly passionate about the subject. All you really need to do to do well is pay attention during lectures and read the assigned materials. If you don't keep up on the readings the essays are going to be difficult. Loved the class though he made things fun and interesting.
He is clever as most people say. He is humorous sometimes. However, the syllabus is strict. Not too many exams, only mid-term and final, but all are essays. Lecture attendance sometimes with simple questions. If you get a good TA, you won't suffer from the hard quizzes everyday.
Lots of long reading assignments but not really a necessity to passing. Very boring lectures, fell asleep through a majority of them. Exams are take home consisting of very easy essay questions that you have a week to do. Take some notes here and there, spend ample amount of time on the essays and you will easily get a 90+
Weekly quizzes and take home tests. All based on his online textbook, lectures, and readings. Not much work in this class. Only downside is that his class is located in south campus, otherwise would've definitely taken him for 112!
Structure of the class is very confusing. He doesn't go chronologically like the text book does and that wouldn't be an issue if he didn't have lectures on subjects that the textbook doesn't cover. His lectures are more like ramblings so just read the textbook and get your notes from the text.
He uses "like" and "um" way too much in the lectures and it gets annoying REALLY fast. There is a lot of reading and most of it isn't tested so it's a waste of time.
The organization of the lectures and reading material is fairly confusing and it's difficult to get a grasp on what you need to know. Between primary source documents, textbook readings, an assigned book, and all the unique content covered in the lectures, it's a struggle to figure out what's going on in a complete picture.
His lectures are good if you can listen to him verbally lecture and take notes. He's a fair teacher: he gives random and super easy attendance quizzes in lecture, so don't miss lecture! Not much homework except for a couple of discussion Q's and reading primary sources and only 2 essay tests in the semester. Easy course.
Personally, Im not one to favor history but McGuire's clear grading criteria and awesome TA's didn't let that get in the way of me getting an A. 1 midterm and 1 final (completed online) and 3 discussion boards, piece of cake! Just use the textbook and his lectures (also posted online) and you'll be in good hands. Taking him for UGC112 for sure!!!!!
Smart guy for sure, but lectures are ridiculously boring. Rambles on and on. Take good notes on what he says, because he doesn't write anything down on his slides. Get a good TA if you can, like Natty, don't get Sarah. A good TA will make you and a bad one can break you. Expects a lot of reading which is annoying for a gen ed. Take it w/ Boyd!
Dr. McGuire is brilliant. He likes to tell stories so if you enjoy history then it will be easy to listen to and class will fly by. He wrote the textbook and the chapters are not long, but the assigned readings could get lengthy. Take good notes because lecture material is on quizzes and your essays will be great if you listen to him in class.
He keeps lectures interesting, has a great personality and makes class fun. Personally I was not a fan of world history, but I fell in love with this class. I would 110% take this class again, or at least a class with this professor again.
"I might not be pretty, but at least I'm done with Don McGuire's World Civ" -overheard in Baldy walkway; accurate af
His lecture is extremely boring, I wouldn't recommend taking his class with all the other GOOD professors that teach UGC111. You have to buy his textbook in order to take the online quizzes along with multiple discussion questions throughout the year. Do not take this class!
Lectures are boring. Requires that you buy his online textbook for $120 which is absolute BS in my opinion. Midterm & Final gave you one week to write three essays. Lots of reading, hard to understand what's going on when you're looking at lecture material, textbook material, and primary source documents all together. Nothing great.
He assigns a lot of primary source readings and his lectures can be a little confusing to follow but overall his class wasn't too hard. The midterm and final is a take home essay with three questions where you have to incorporate the lecture, textbook, and the primary sources. There are also online discussion questions and easy attendance quizzes.
no tests in the course besides the midterm and final. quizzes in recitation and his textbook is online with quizzes on each chapter that are 5 questions long. Open textbook in one tab and quiz in another and all the answers are right there. he gives random attendance quizzes which are an easy grade booster. 3 essays for mid & final each, easy A!
His class is basically based on your ability to correlate the lecture materials with the readings he assigned. The class has two exams the midterm and final, which are each 3 essays 800 words each
so boring. the class overs no notes to take because all the slides he has are literally just images and he goes on a tangent about how he went to so and so country.
I took his online class, so recitations were mandatory, thus this meant my grade was decided by my TA. But, it was an easy class, I don't think I watched a single online lecture but I still got an A . Class is based on books more than lectures
This class does not update you with your grades. If you take online class be very aware when is the due dates for assignments and such. ALSO, this textbook cost $110 and IT IS USELESS IN CHAPTER TEST. The chapter test also contains what he mentioned in lecture! The slides literally contains NOTHING useful. Hate this class so much.
He's a really amazing professor who's very passionate and tries to help his students do their best. So many opportunities for extra credit and all due dates are outlined clearly on the syllabus. You can tell he loves what he does and his class was so easy but also interesting. Very understanding guy, there's no reason not to get an A in this class
Class consists of multiple chapter tests, midterm and final exam, and homework were easy. Online textbook was pricey but you need it in order to answer questions for homework, chapter tests and exams. Would recommend taking it online instead of in person!
He is clearly very passionate about teaching this class. Grading is very midterm + final heavy (combined 65%), but they are easy as long as you read the short textbook. He connected many of the things we learn with his own travels in the UB travel program, which sometimes came off a little salesman-ish, but a good class, recommend to take online.
There is no required textbook but he will make you read so many books(at no cost). He'll make you write a midterm and a final paper which is a minimum of 5 pages each on comparing 2 movies. I never read a single book and only watched minute long YouTube clips on the movies and somehow managed to get an A.
Dr McGuire is a really nice man and is very passionate about his job. I never watched his lectures and just read the assigned readings (from short books) and used outside sources to write the papers. McGuire will help you write a good paper, he loves to receive emails and talk about the course so do that to get in his good graces!
Mcguire is amazing! If you participate in class, read the assignments, and talk to him youll be in good standing. Hes very easy going and his lectures are on the reading assigned the class prior and some things can connect to the material. Hell try to accommodate to the class and how much work/tests they have. I highly recommend this seminar.
Very easy course. There are very few assignments, and they are submitted once a week with 5-6 questions, which are very easy and can be completed in a quick 10 minutes. Each unit has a 45-minute quiz, and each quiz has only 10 multiple-choice questions, which is plenty of time. The exams are not proctored online at all.
Avoid this guy; he made his own textbook which costs a ridiculous amount of money in order to juice as much money out of students as possible, so you can't find it online. His quizzes/tests are annoying because the questions are actively trying to trick you with vague/similar answers instead of testing your knowledge. Worst prof. I've had in years.
This class was really easy, but it was super annoying that the textbook is mandatory (and written by the professor) and expensive, yet he then posts the questions (the only real reason you need the textbook). Felt like a waste of money, even though it was helpful for the tests. Very understanding professor though.
Professor McGuire has been my favorite teacher so far at UB. His lecture is fun, and relatively easy. It is quite a bit of reading but that comes along with tons of movies you get to watch. If you're looking for an Honors Seminar class to take, this is the one.
Easy class for pathways, homeworks are weekly and weekly quizes based on the lectures but are overall very easy
completely online, easy assignments and everything you need to pass is provided.
