Prof. Miller lectures and gives you everything you need to know for tests. As long as you take notes and pay attention you will do fine!! He is not only intelligent but he also shares funny stories and antecdotes that go along with his lesson plan!
Mr. Miller is a great asset to UMD. He is easy to understand and grades on a huge curve. There is a ton of information given, but he makes it more interesting with demonstrations, films, and experiments.
He writes notes out and makes the material easy to understand. He relates it to information which makes it all easier to remember. He is a great teacher -- the tests are a little harder than the actual material, but Professor Miller does an awesome job!
One of the best professors at UMD. He has excellent lectures. He also has a great sense of humor. He's very helpful. Exams are not too hard. He also drops lowest exam. This class is worth your money!!
lectures are very clear, and not boring. he writes everything on the board, just copy those notes and study. lowest test score is dropped, plus he grades on a huge curve.
Make sure to get the previous semesters exams in the library, they help a ton. Other than that, the lectures are alright, though kind of boring. Found it hard to stay away during them because the lecture hall was so dark. Who turns the lights off at 9am!
He's a cool dude. You learn a lot from him. Plus the course is easy to understand! Thumbs up!
Very laid back-doesn't even write on the blackboard, which is annoying. Funny though, and you absorb lots of information. Museum trip is fun.
If you skip, or don't take notes, you will be in trouble. No need for the book, just pay attention in lab and take notes! If you don't study the old tests the library provides or your notes you will probably do poorly on his hard tests.
Great proffesor!! Lectures are very clear. I didn't know a whole lot about science, but with him it didn't take long for me to understand. Take him if possible!!!!!!!
Everything he writes down and says is important. If you think some of the details in the notes would be stupid to be put on the test, study them anyways because they will be on there.
He's a good teacher, hes very clear but his quizes are annoying but not hard, he's easy but some of the stuff he says in class and you dont think are notes are on the test so you just gatta pay a little extra attention to the things he stresses on but doesnt write down
Prof. Miller is an excellent professor. I had him for both 120 and 121. He makes science interesting and does a great job lecturing. I'm not surprised that he's a senior lecturer! His exams are not too bad. There's lots of info. to study. You'll enjoy this class. It's definitely worth your money!
Not too bad of a professor, lectures are very understanable, however the quizzes are not as easy as you might think. fun class though. and he has a great sense of humor at times. overall not too bad of a class. and you drop ur lowest quiz and test. so it helps.
class is boring but miller is funny. is willing to work with you so you do okay in class. exams are very difficult; i had to get a tutor and a study partner. flunked every stinking exam but still got a C in class. good teacher.
hilarious! for the first time, science was interesting and understandable. i'll miss his class.
Class isnt to bad.. hes funny. Very easy to take notes and understand. Tests and quizzes are pretty easy to if you go over the notes.
The class was not hard but i still did bad on the tests... he grades on a curve so dont worry you will be fine. He is boring and funny at the same time. Good guy
Miller is the best his class is ok you just have to study yuor notes he curves everything its sooo easy to get an A the quizes are sooo annoying but he drops the lowest test and quiz all you have to do to pass this class is show up and write down the notes in genral hes a great professor
Write down whatever he does. any tangents just briefly jot down the main points. study the day before the exam. He is very easy and his lame jokes are hella funny. Good prof to have. Made this class fun. Labs are the best with him. They are shortest.
I would recommend this class to anyone who is a non-science major that needs credits. Some of the tests are difficult, so studying is absolutely necessary, as is taking notes in every class.
...VERY EASY! Just take good notes and study for about an hour before each test and you'll be fine. Tests are all multiple choice with some true/false. How hard can that be...? NOT AT ALL!...Take this class it's a breeze.
very nice and laid back, tells off-the-wall jokes that you can't help but laugh at. if you study, attend class, and take good notes, you will do well on the tests. also, he uses course tools and posts old tests for you to study from. USE THEM! they are a huge help!
Great Professor, his lectures are interesting and comprise most of the test questions. Spring Semester exams included Essay, but they were moderatly difficult at worst, Great Course, Great Professor.
Do not buy book. Just show up for class, take notes, and study for exams, you should be guranteed a minimum of a B. Labs were fun with Miller as instructor. He really knows his stuff. Funny jokes sometimes too. I would take him again if I could.
If you take notes and study the old tests, this is the easiest 8 credits (Nat Sci 1 &2 ) you can ever hope for.
He really made a class interesting that would normally be something that I'm not interested in. I still shop at English Gardens because he gave it such good reviews too! I highly recommend this class for any non-Science major.
I CAN'T BELIEVE ALL THE COMMENTS HERE. OWFUL TEACHER. HARD TEST. SCRUES A+++ STUDENTS BADLY. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
He is the best science prof ever. He is hilarious and makes a boring class kind of interesting.
Miller is a P.I.M.P. for sure...class is just lecture and take notes. 3 tests, 3 quizzes and an optional final. He drops your lowest test and quiz also. Take him for lab also
Class was much more interesting than I expected it to be~ Prof. Miller's nice, & he'll tell some amusing stories that really go well w/the material. Old exams are posted on CTools, so if you study them & your notes from class, you'll get an A. Buy the textbook (if you want it) cheap on Amazon. Labs are usually fairly pointless & dull.
simply the best, much better than all the rest! Nice guy good attitude great personality and a funny sense of humor. Prof. Miller presents his lectures clearly and the material is very understandable. He knows his stuff and likes teaching it. highly recommended for anyone who has to take a science course. study a-bit and you should do just fine.
Very good instructor and great lectures. He talks to where it is very easy to grasp his concepts and he has fun while doing it. His exams are very fair and his notes are very well done. Just show up, take the notes, and study a little and you'll be fine.
Horrible sense of humor. Very vulgar language, very offensive and insulting. Consistently runs over class time and goes off topic constantly (ie on the morality of abortion-This is a science class NOT ethics)
Very unprofessional and insulting. NOT funny at all! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! He wastes class time on meaningless things unrelated to class and always runs over class time.
He posts his previous years test online to help you study. His tests are still pretty tricky. He curves the class. He puts the class average on the B- range, which could turn a C- to a B-.
One of the trickiest, snakiest professors ever. The only reason that I took this class was because of the false ratings that found in this website. Don’t be that a victim. You will regret taking this class. I had no interest what so ever on his lecture. He is boring, unbending and demanding. From 15 students that I know we all averaged C to B-
I don't know what these other losers are saying. They make him sound like Satan. Don't buy the book. Just study your ass off the notes he gives and the old exams. 4 exams (inc. final), 3 quizzes. Drops lowest exam and lowest quiz. Explains concepts so you understand them. People who say he's "vulgar" are people who have no sense of humor.
This professor is awesome! His lectures and labs were very interesting and he's really funny! Don't buy the book, you won't need it!!! Just take good notes and study the old exams on Ctools. He is very helpful in lab and made science understandable for me, which is no easy task! I got a B in the class and had a great time!
NO TEXTBOOK NEEDED! Good grade guaranteed if you attend class and take notes. Loves to help you understand if you have questions. Lectures can be repetitive and boring at times, but Miller is extremely funny and well-intentioned - made science exciting! CURVES everything. Attempt and ye shall succeed. Take Miller or Meyers for Lab.
What a horrible professor! I managed a passing grade in the class only because of the lab! I cannot believe how many positive posts there are on him, he is just a disgusting old man! Lectures were boring, he is not funny (but thinks he is) and swears constantly. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR-YOU WILL REGRET IT!
I missed every Friday of his class the whole semester and still ended up with a B. I did terrible on all of the tests and quizzes. All you have to do is do well in the lab and you'll be fine. Easiest sciene class of my life. The prof is the strangest person ever though. No textbook! :)
Very good prof. Attend classes regularly and do the labs and you should not have an issue. He's funny, and does his best to make the material interesting.
Great professor!!!! Very helpful and clear in his lectures. I hate science, but he made it very easy for me. Labs are also fun, very interesting. I actually learned something. Do not buy a textbook!!!!!! He doesn't go by it at all, if you take notes you will be fine.
He's nice and funny. The class is easy if you show up and take notes. Nothing difficult at all.
This guy isn't that bad. He does tell some pretty lame jokes, but he's nice. You only need the book for quizes, but if you know your notes back and forth, you'll ace his tests. Don't text msg in class or leave your phone on - he gets really pissed about that kinda stuff (and will call you out on it). Not a bad guy, I'd take him again.
Wasn't impressed. Tests were very tricky and worded so that you were confused as to what the question was to begin with, answers were similar, and very tricky. Lectures were boring, and very vague most of the time. He doesn't use the book, and his notes aren't very good for test studying. He could have done a better job teaching this course!
miller is a great professor! i didnt even buy the book. just take really good notes and study them a lot and you can ace the tests. you also get to drop one test and quiz grade.
You will go to a bog for one of the labs and you might get bit by a snake and/or die and that would REALLY SUCK. Other than that, he's easy and has a quirky sense of humor. You don't really need the book if you have good notes.Just don't text msg or pass notes because he'll call you out on it in front of everyone and it really irritates him.
Nice Guy - Great class for non science majors. 5 Tests total + Optional Final. He drops your lowest grade out of the 6 examns so the final may boost your grade. Labs were EASY & lectures were interesting. I took detailed notes, the tests are directly from his notes so don't buy the book. He gives you old examns to study from before each test.
This guy is Charles Darwin! This guy loves him so much and he is a funny guy in class. He does talk fast, his exams are tricky but study and you will be fine. Study the notes and you will be fine. Hes a good guy and his jokes are hilarious. Fun guy and his lectures are not boring. He trys to tie interesting things to learn and real life concepts.
Old fashioned. He writes all his notes by hand, forcing you to come to every class (which isn't bad, it's just that it's 3x a week for only 50min!) and listen to rambling lectures. It's easy to get an A, but a really annoying class. Sometimes you'll drive to class only to have him goof around with experiments the whole time. What a waste.
Funny guy, really knows the material and tries to make class fun. He writes notes by hand and if you miss a lecture its confusing the next time. Lab is super easy.. all in all, good class
DONT BUY THE BOOOK! you dont need it if you take notes in the class. I bought it and never even took the plastic off.
He is very smart. Knows what he is talking about. Write out all notes on overhead. If you study these you'll get an A. Optional final exam. 3 tests and 3 quizes. He drops the lowest quiz grade, and the lowest test grade if you take the final exam. Great non science major class. Nice guy, easy labs. Interesting and easy to follow as well.
Don't buy the book. Study lecture notes for exams and quizzes. Easy class if you attend lectures.
Great class taught by great Prof. Tests are difficult IF you don't study. He posts old exams to use to study making it easier to do well. You will need to study. It doesn't matter if you're an A student or not studying is required. Those who fail this class most likley did cause they failed to study. His curve turned 1st test from a D+ to B.
Good professor
Excellent professor...very helpful. What he shows in class is what's on the exams so there's no need for the book. Rambles sometimes, but he knows his stuff.
He is not very helpful. Whenever you ask a question he acts like you should already know it. yes, he is very knowledgeable, but he is not very helpful and his tests and quizzes are worded to trick you. Don't take this professor if you can help it.
Great professor, tries to make a science class interesting and fun for non-science students. Very adequate. I learned a lot of useful information in his class. 3 quizzes and 3 exams. Very reasonable.
He is so nice. He teaches the class at a level that everyone can understand. He might be the best teacher at U of M-D I have had so far. He give pratice exams for each exam. There are 5 exams and a final. If you go to every class and take note you are for sure getting a A in the class.
Don't bother buying the textbook. Final exam is optional if you like your grade beforehand. Exams and quizzes are just based off lecture notes. Our class had a large curve at the end too.
Quirky, funny professor who is what you envision when you think of a science professor. Easy course that doesn't require the book. 5 exams and he only tests about concepts discussed in class. Attending the SI sessions is basically a must; I got way more value there then at lecture. Curves every single exam. Must take class for non-science majors
Instructor is very funny and makes the class interesting. Doesn't count attendance and you do not need to buy the book. best class for non science majors who just need this to fulfill requirements for their program. definitely take his class, he's very cool. Curves every exam, lectures are interesting, exams are easy
Class is isn't hard.. but you must study! He is a great professor and wants his students to do well, which is why he is very generous with his curves. Definitely recommend him if you want any easy science class- nonscience majors
Really easy, but you must go to class. Exams only cover lecture material. Didn't study for any exams and got and "A", he curves a lot. There's a lot of not very smart people in his class, which is why he gets low ratings. I'm no genius, but getting and A is not hard at all if you go to class and study a little. The labs are pointless, but easy.
If you go to lecture its easy, you will never need the book. labs aren't that bad.
He is a great professor but I took this class the winter semester and I regret it. All labs are indoors and so it turned out to be quite boring. My advice: take it in the fall when there's no snow :(
Before I go any further - DON'T waste your money on the book; all of the quizzes and tests are based on lecture material. SI was really helpful personally, so go if you're struggling with any of the concepts. 3 quizzes and 3 tests; always curves them generously. Drops lowest quiz grade and final exam is optional if you like your grade beforehand.
Easy class, Easy A. 5 exams, optional final if you like your grade. My piece of advice is to really pay attention to his lectures and write down whatever he says. Don't think about missing classes, unless you can get detailed notes from a friend. Hoping to get an A this semester.
Dr. Miller is the best. He makes class funny and interesting. But this is a hard class because of the exams and lab practicals. The averages are usually 63%. But he curves it very nicely and is always available for help. plus you get out of lab two hours early every week.
Donald Miller, awesome guy. Easy class for non-science majors. Honestly, the only thing you gotta do to pass this course with a high mark (A or B) is just attend the lectures and take really good notes. IF you miss lectures here and there (which is bound to happen cause some of his lectures do get boring down the line), make sure you have friends.
This class is unbelievably simple. I showed up about 4 times all semester and passed with a C (I took it pass fail, so grades didn't matter). A lot of people seem to have trouble with the class. I don't know how. Half the answers to the multiple choice questions on the tests are essentially handed to you on a platter.
Absolute joke. I barely attended this class and ended up passing with no worries (took the class PassFail). If you're interested in science, I would say don't take this class. I felt like I was in middle school again when I attended. But if you're looking for easy credits, definitely take this class with Miller.
Mr. Miller is by far the best professor I've had at umd. He's so funny that I was in tears laughing during class. If you're super religious and don't believe in science you won't think he's funny, so don't be too sensitive. His tests are easy if you study the notes and he makes the labs fun. Definitely recommend him!!
Professor Miller was excellent during my time in his class. He cared about everyone learning the material and was very lenient when it came to the grading for the exams. Make sure to use the practice quiz's and exams, they really do help. I would highly recommend him, but watch out for the lightbulb experiment, don't look at them directly.
Miller is a great professor for NSCI120Lectures. Although very boring at time hes slightly funny corny jokes sometimes which helps to ease the pain of boredom. Attendance hardly necessary but you must study the practice exams on Canvas to pass the actual tests. No group projects just go sit down listen , and STAY AWAKE.
Professor Miller's lectures can be a bit boring at times, but showing up really helps when understanding the material. You don't generally have to go to EVERY class, but I wouldn't recommend just not going at all.
He is a descent professor. His lectures are boring at times but you definitely need to go to class to learn the material. Take good notes because that is your study guide. Don't buy the book. His notes are the only thing you really need to study. Pay attention during power point lectures especially when he goes over Creationism.
Prof Miller is definitely a great professor! Seeing as I am not a science major, I was l looking for the easiest option for a science class, this class is it! 3 tests and an optional final exam, you do not need a book, his lecture notes are all the study materials you need. With that being said go to class, you will get an A!
Great professor! He is really interested in what he is teaching. This is a super easy class, as long as you show up for lecture. He curves every test. Three tests with an optional final. I took the final to get my A- to an A and it was by far the easiest exam of them all. I had him for lab, super easy in lab. Practically gives you the answers.
Took this class for dist. requirements as someone who is *not* a science person. I ended up with an A because he makes the material so accessible, but you do have to earn your grade. No assigned readings, but the book helped me understand things better for tests. Could get away with Google studying if you want to save $. Notes are everything.
Don't skip class. You'll regret it. He really knows what he's talking about and his lectures definitely reflect in the test. He's willing to help you understand and if you have a question. He will help you! Additionally, there is tutoring available.
Professor Miller was my academic advisor as a pre med student as well as my professor for natsci120. His tests were fine but as an advisor he couldn't have been more deplorable. No one should be allowed to tell a student they are not meant to be a doctor. For a freshmen that is heartbreaking.
Hes a real good teacher; his lectures are very informative and if you take notes i didn't have to read one thing out of the book. Hes strait forward and a nice guy that will help you and knows a lot if you just ask him.
Professor Miller is very nice but his exams can be a little tough since they consist of multiple choice and true/false questions. However, he does curve a lot on the exams and at the end of the course. Its important to take VERY detailed notes to pass the class and do not skip class because he does not post the notes online.
Taking NSCI 121 with Professor Miller is well worth it if you are a non-science major and are also good with multiple choice/true and false exams. You have to be there for class, and if you miss have someone take notes for you because he writes down everything on the board. The exam questions can be tricky, but he makes up for them with a curve.
I'm a non-science major, so this class was PERFECT! Show up to class, take notes, and study the notes for a few days before the test (could prob even get away with studying only the night before). Just show up for lab, easy grader for lab. Put forth a small effort, and you will get an A. HUGE curves, extremely easy if you just take notes and study
Not really a Science person so he was the perfect teacher. Basically show up to class and take good notes and you will do fine. Lectures were interesting and related to every day life.
He goes on tangents during his lectures but overall he is a good professor and grades on a curve which helps a lot.
Lots of times during class, he will talk for 8-10 minutes straight about NOTHING, which makes the class insanely boring sometime. The beginning of the class is fine, but it gets difficult and goes downhill afterward. He is still a very nice professor but the class can be unnecessarily annoying sometimes.
Awesome
I really liked him! His powerpoint were posted but you have to go to class to listen to the lecture. There's a lot of notes but he's really funny. If you ask him a question, he really knows what he's talking about. There was however a lot of info to study for the exams but if you need help, he's always there for you. Three exams, final optional.
He is pretty cool as a teacher. Doesn't really care if you don't want to put in the effort but he is there if you need nay help. His exams are straightforward and will make sure to cover everything during the lectures.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK; such a waste of money. I didn't even crack it open once, just pay attention during lectures because all of the test questions come from them. This guy is too funny, had me laughing every class. He bases your grade off of only 4 tests though so show up to class & study. Final is optional so if you do good on the tests..(:
Don't buy the book . If you pay attention in class you will get an easy A. Go to the SI sessions if you don't go to class or want help before exams. Test are easy if you pay attention in class. He curves them so that helps as well. He cracks a couple jokes which always makes lectures better. Easy pass if you just show up and put in some time.
Lectures did not keep interests within the classroom, proven by the decrease in attendance. Lab was amazing. Attend SI sessions if you're not catching on with his lectures. 3 exams, final is cumulative but optional to take. Lowest test grade out the of the FOUR gets dropped.
Go to the study sessions, they really do help. The class takes a reasonable amount of study time but there is no hw
Laid back professor. Exams are easy and labs were fun. Will work with you if you just talk to him.
Hes very intelligent & clearly knows alot about the topics in this class, but u have to be patient cause he talks REALLY slow. Theres no homework but there are pop quizzes & 3 exams, he drops the lowest. Overall if u go to lecture & take notes & ur okay. Take the time to learn & listen tho cause hes a really good professor & makes it interesting
At the start of every lecture, he takes out a piece of paper and hand writes the notes while lecturing at the same time. All the material from the exams comes from the notes he writes down. To get a good grade, either record the lectures or write down every little thing he says. 3 term exams and 1 final. Mix of mc, true/false, and short answer
3 Exams and an optional final. Gives practice exams that do not really help with the exams. His exams are hard and your notes do not really help either. He curves based on the performance of your class. People should only take the final if they have a grade at the cut off line. Basically, your grade is saved by your lab grade (easy A).
Everyone claims this class is an easy A. I have never received anything less than an A before this class. He some how managed to make natural science hard. Notes were different then test answers. 4 exams, drops one. Says he curves but its literally 30points. Worse class I have ever taken. Wouldof rather taken Bio.
Don is a pretty cool guy, but his lectures are the most boring thing ever. He can be pretty funny sometimes, but I wouldn't bother going to class more than once a week. I went to a total of 3 classes each type between exams, and just went to the SI sessions instead. If you don't go to SI however, you're going to fail.
The only material on the tests is what's covered in lecture--I didn't know that going in. Also, go to the SI sessions, they really help. He's old-school funny, sometimes his jokes don't land immediately, but he's fun. A bit boring, but he definitely knows his stuff. If you pay attention and take notes in class, you should be fine.
This class was GREAT! Make sure you goto every lecture and write down everything he says and you'll be okay. There are no curveballs on the test, just memorize everything he said/wrote. He makes lectures entertaining by showing lots of pictures and telling stories.
The lectures are slow and quite uneventful, but you need to show up. Take good notes on what he talks about and then study them and you will do well. The exams are mostly essay/short answer, but they are not that difficult. Show up for attendance for participation points. Listening to him can be boring but it's better than reading a textbook.
