His tests come directly from notes, so attendance is a good thing. He puts up an online review that covers EXACTLY what is on each test, so with a little bit of effort you can do really well. He made history interesting for me. It was my favorite class this semester. Sometimes when class was over I had no idea that it had been that long.

Make sure to attend class. He takes role, and his role does count for something. His TA will take over on sick days. So there is always class. Make sure to study your review... BECAUSE IT IS THE TEST and he even tells you this. Knowing how to take notes well is very vital in this class. Reading your book and reader will also help!!!!!
Most of the test comes from the lecture notes, and he gives you a review before the test, and the test is the review.. read the short passages in the reader though... the short answers always come from the reader
Amazing teacher. Gives outlines and very comprehensive test review (shows everything that's on test, you just have to study) Attendance not required, but he rewards you pointwise in the end if your grade is borderline. He knows his materical and actually makes the subject interesting. Would take class again, highly recommended
really cool guy who cares about his student,i'm sure that im gonna take HIST2 with him
Test content comes directly from his lectures, he gives you everything you need to know but that means you must show up to class to get a good grade. Part of his tests are fill in the blank with no word bank but he gives you the items to put in the blanks ahead of time. Very fair and interesting!
I took his 'Complete History of the US Navy' course, and it met for three hours on Monday nights. He is really into this subject. For tests, he gives you seven essay topics and picks 3 for the test. The essay questions had almost nothing to do with the lectures. You have to do separate research. He grades his essays really hard, be DETAILED!
I have taken him for 1610 & 2610. He's a great lecturer and uses powerpoint. The only grades are four exams and they are HARD but it's not impossible to make an A. His review sheet tells you what is going to be on there and you must be able to write a lot. I would definitely take him again, even though he's a little tougher than other profs.
Good teacher but very boring. Don't take him in the morning unless you want to fall back asleep. I enjoyed his teaching but his voice was very sleep inducing.
VERY Hard. The guy is very boring and he doesn't post his notes online. I'm an A student and made a C in his class. 65 people failed the final!!! Do not take unless you want to fail this course
Very hard
His tests are too hard. It would be easier if he used a word bank when there is definitions on the test. it is hard to remember the words to the definitions. Also it is hard to write two pages over the essay when you only have 50 minutes for the test. He is a great teacher and makes his lectures understandable but his tests are too hard.
He lets his Teaching Assistants grade the essay portions of the exams, to which with a class of 300 they don't really read them. Expect a low grade from him because of this. I will be avoiding his classes in the future. To his credit however he is very knowledgeable about the subject material.
He does not post his notes online. He doesn't even use blackboard, he's got some geocities page that has the syllabus. He puts the reviews up a week before the test, but for the final it is two weeks. He uses the essay book on every test, but has only used the textbook for a few questions on the final. Overall, he is passionate, but boring.
This is the worst history class I have ever been in. All he talked about was military warfare..he skipped over the holocaust and maybe mentioned pearl harbor for one minute. I love history but not when all I am learning about is submarines and navy war stragedies. DO NOT TAKE HIM! Tests are also extremely hard and graded unfairly.
I see that other people in my class agree that this professor is VERY difficult. His TA's are annoying as they grade the tests and don't do anything to help you at all. Also, all he does is lecture NON stop and doesn't even use slides or post any notes. It's PURE auditory learning. 65 people failed his first test, completely unacceptable.
Insanely difficult. I got ALL A's in my classes except this one, which I failed. The man does nothing to help you and doesn't give any extra credit. All tests are written and are graded very harshly. Since his classes are so big the TAs don't even fully read the essay and just mark off massive points based on a few key words. DO NOT TAKE
Alright, everyone's correct in saying he is difficult, but his class is certainly passable. Do EXACTLY what he says. Don't screw around, go to class, take notes and study. The SI in my class, Lori Burgin, was a life-saver! So find help via SI's if your class has one. The books are pretty necessary, use it for reviews.
He is very hard and his tests are ridiculous. i missed a test because my grandmother died and he said too bad youd shouldnt have missed test day! his tests are hard.i almost failed this class!
His lectures are great, his tests were not something that you should study lightly for, but they are not impossible if you are prepared. I did horribly the first test (a 50) and made a 100 on the last one. You just have to be willing to take the time
HE doesn't keep his facts straight, goes by concept which isn't a good idea for History and goes back to previous topics, in a nutshell he's terrible.
WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!!! His lectures are boring, his tests are a joke, and the TA's are rude! I would strongly discourage anyone from taking this class!
The absolute worst History Class I have ever taken. Horrbile TA's who lack the ability to read. I strongly advise you to get out if still possible. I'm an honors student, and currently failing. Horrible teaching, long boring lectures. The man could talk me to sleep.
Save yourself, and get out NOW. Possibly the WORST TA's ever, his class had helped me to lose interest in History. It's really frusterating, DONT take his tests lightly.
If your a slow writer as I am its very hard to keep up with his notes. His TA's are very rude and no help at all. He does not put up lecture notes or anything. Review sheets are offered a week before the test, you have to memorize the word bank on the test.
easy! I do not understand the complaints, yes it is a borning lecture course but he is so straight forward, his review is dead on point. If you do the review and attened lecture its fool proof. Old fashion hand notes from his power points. Essay test with 20 fill-in-the blank. NO WORD BANK. But do not let that intimidate you, it is very simple.
I took his summer 2 class. Reading quizzes were difficult. Tests were easy if you utilize the review sheet. Work bank is provided. I found his TA very helpful and a fair grader. I enjoy history and Mitchener did not disappoint!
Dr. Mitchener has very tough tests. Only five throughout the semester, only grades you have. STUDY LIKE MAD. His lectures have everything you need to know as long as you write every word he says along with the powerpoints. He knows what he's talking about but it's boring to listen to him laugh at his own jokes. Good guy but his teaching stinks.
This man is the standard of what a college professor should be. Anyone that says his tests are hard are just not willing to make an effort. He provides a review sheet that says exactly what will be on the test. I hate the subject of History, but made an A+. What does that tell you?
He seems to be a pretty standard college professor but keep in mind he doesn't cut much slack. Exams are pretty rough if your brain is not good at memorizing exact spellings of terms and exact dates in history. I liked the lectures but had a very time with the exams...If you are good at studying then..have at it!
Good Professor.
good professor. gives review before the test that exlplains everything you need to know !
Very confusing when teaching. He jumps from one subject to another and then back to the first subject. Very hard to follow him and write notes at the same time. He does give us all the terms and questions to study for before the test so that makes it easier.
This professor is by far one the worst professors that I have had so far in my college career. His teaching is very scattered and all over the place. His Ta's are very rude and unprofessional which makes the course even more unenjoyable.
He writes everything into powerpoints. Attendence is 'Mandatory' by primarily used to determine if to bump up borderline grades. Gives you a review for you tests with all the answers on it, but the test itself is fill in the blank with no word bank. I skipped class and googled the review and made an B. Weaksauce.
Guy was is a naval history major, and you can tell. Pretty boring lectures unless he speaks about battle ships then he gets ecstatic which is odd to see cause he usually is like Debbie Downer. Skipped lots of classes, still pulled an A. Read the book, do the review...Easy A.
One of the worst instructors I've ever had. He lacks interest in what he is teaching, and offers zero outside help. He teaches in outlines, and never gives you full detail of events, then expects you to know every detail possible. He skips around, and is hard to follow. Don't take this class unless you want to pay a someone for a job they don't do.
Worst professor on the UNT campus. I failed the first test, and was so confused and humiliated by his arrogant attitude I stopped attending class in February. Do not believe the good reviews, because they are the exceptions not the rule. Take class online, do whatever you must to avoid this horrible experience that I had.
Took his Naval History Class. Really liked it, though I did have to work at it. Really like him personally, on the Marine Corps birthday he played the Marine Hymn for myself and the other Marines in the room.
Powerpoints have barely any information, so take notes fast. He always gives a review before tests with everything you need to know. The only real problem I had with the class was that the TA's were complete jerks and way too strict on how you phrase answers. He was also very arrogant/intimidating, so I never asked him anything.
I'm with you guys, I'm taking his 2620 course for the 5-W2 session. His power points don't make any sense/have no info. on them. He also uses the board a lot to write info. down which is also really confusing. I'd drop but I'm reg.for the fall already,He also just keeps talking and talking very difficult to follow and understand at times.
To add on, avoid his courses unless you go over summer. We were supposed to end class at 3:20pm we didn't get out until 4:45pm smh at him... He just kept lecturing half the class at left, He would have kept going until his TA told him the time. If you buy the book(s)/do the readings etc it will help you out a lot. Overall, avoid his courses!
I really enjoyed taking his class. As long as you take the notes from the Powerpoints word for word and study you'll be fine. The reviews he hands out before tests are extremely helpful too. Also keep in mind, when you're dealing with WW2 on exams chances are he'll go for the essay questions dealing with the Pacific Theatre, he favors that area.
Work bank is provided. < You're lucky! we didn't get a word bank on any of our test's. Don't take his course, he's a good lecturer but if you do take him enroll in his summer courses. Avoid his courses lik the plague! VERY difficult test's.
I'm embarrassed for him, long and boring lectures. His test's cover too much material and he doesn't offer any assistance with the fill in the blank portion.(i.e multiple choice true/false etc) He expects you to remember all the facts/concepts like how they match up in either his notes or from the review. You just have to shake your head at him...
Gave interesting lectures. I suggest a digital recorder to help keep up with note taking. Gave a review sheet that included all terms, short answer, and essay possibilities for the test so there were no surprises. If you don't attend lectures or don't use the tools given... no chance! SI did a great job helping! Great Class!
I don't get why people don't like him. Took every one of his history courses and aced them all. He doesn't really require attendance, but essays are based on notes. As for the tests, he gives you everything you need to know on the review. All you need to be able to do is actually remember names. Anyone that complains about tests simply didn't study
His tests are on the hard side but he gives pretty specific review sheets. Attendance is not mandatory but he doesn't make notes or powerpoints available online so lectures are important. You'll do fine if you show up, take notes, and do the review sheets.
He is a horrible teacher, my first exam I bacisally got all but two questions correct, but because I forgot to put the years on the documents he took a a point a piece, and then on my short answer he took off 5 pts (out of 15) because I didnt use the word "local". He tells us not to go by the book but to use what he says. LMAO!
Boring lecture, but if you attend and take notes, and use the books to study extremely the review it is an easy A. The review is the test, don't mess it up.
Forewarned is forearmed, he is a TOUGH grader. Teaches courses as though they were at a college, rather than high-school-plus, hence the slew of whining HIST 2610/2620 students. Is always available for consultation or even idle chit-chat. Test material always covered by reviews, textbooks likely mandatory to receive a good grade.
He likes to hear himself talk. But he tells what you he expects on every test.
Difficult class as always, relying heavily on a slew of textbooks. Tests are graduate-level and include essays entirely on reading materials, with a difficult, but doable paper. Lectures can meander a bit, but always provide sorely needed context to 15th, 16th, and 17th century maritime affairs. Excellent class if you are up for a challenge.
I actually liked this class. If you attend class and take good notes on what he says you will ace the tests easily. Im not even that great of a student and aced every one. Plus sometimes youll get extra credit if you attend like the class before spring break and stuff. You only have tests, no homework or reading or anything :)
I had to retake this class with a different professor because I got a C. I read the book, went to every lecture, and studied-- I tried everything but I just can't pass his class. History was a piece of cake in high school but this class is frustratingly difficult. Nothing from the book is on the test but what you hear/see on the powerpoint slides.
Dr. Mitchener class was very hard for me. I never missed a day of class, took descent notes and attended multiple SI meetings and I still pulled a "D" in his class. The tests were all verbatim memorization with NO term word bank, two short answer, and one essay question. Dr. Mitchener was a good instructor but just be prepared for his tests.
EASY EASY EASY!!! He Gives you a review for each exam...and All the Exam questions come basically from the same review..Just memorize it and ur good.. Easy A. ur overall grade comes from 4 exams
His tests are super hard with no word bank for 20 fill in the blanks, and then expects you to write a detailed essay. Unless you're an ace in history, don't take this class!
Very interesting professor and lecturer. I had no interest in the subject beforehand but he makes it very enjoyable. His tests are straightforward from the lectures, so if you take good notes you can just reproduce them. Didn't use the textbooks much, but weren't expensive to buy. Really great professor!
Don't expect to be entertained by this professor, or even learn much. His lectures are straight from the textbook. The only positive about his class is that he gives you a study guide that includes all the questions that will be on the test. This class is all about memorization and regurgitation of the memorized information.
Hard course because there are many details to remember. Take good notes. Must attend all classes to grasp the necessary notes/information. Test reviews are excellent. Offers helpful study sessions with TA. Tests have some essay questions. Plan to write organized answers. Use flash cards for vocabulary.
This professor gives informative lectures, they are not fun, but they get a little interesting if you want it to. The grade is only from the 3 or 4 test during the semester, but he gives the best reviews 2 weeks prior. The T.A's offer many study sessions that help also. This is not your class if you don't want to study though,if you will, take it.
This class is super hard.. lucky we had ROBERT as an SI leader.. if you can take a section where he is the SI leader--- students recommend the class based on that and he pretty much helps you pass all the test.
This is a tough class compared to all the other basic core classes offered at UNT. He gives a review 2 weeks in advanced but expects you to know every little thing. if you study just the short answeres and fill in the blank you can pass the class if your not the best essay writer.
His tests are super easy! He gives you a review a week before each test and as long as you take good notes, practice your short answers and essay beforehand and attend at least one SI session per test, you will do fine. I made a one hundred on each of his 4 tests. He even gives you a 15 point extra credit question on the final. Don't buy the text
Great professor! His class is all lectures and attendance is mandatory. The grade is based on three exams only. The great thing about him is that he gives you a review a few weeks before the exam that tells you basically everything that's on it. He expects a lot of detail on test essay questions, so make sure you've prepared well for them.
Super easy class. Attendance and taking detailed notes is a must. He gives out test reviews a couple of weeks beforehand, and all of the questions that will be on the test are on the review. I see no reason why anyone should make below an A in this class.
It's important to show up every single day to take notes, and you take a lot of notes. I typed up probably 50+ pages of notes. He gives amazing reviews for the tests. The reviews are literally exactly what is going to be on the test: vocab, short essay, and long essay. Boring teacher, but if you work hard you could probably get an A.
Love how he structures his classes. He tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests and doesn't ask for much else. You have to seriously pay attention though and show up to every class or else you will definitely miss something and it'll hurt you. Only complaint - didn't seem to follow the textbook and doesn't put things on blackboard
The whole grade of this class depends on 4 exams only. If you mess up on one then it is hard to come back. He doesn't post any of his notes online and the only way to take notes is to listen to him and write it down. He goes fast and it's hard to catch everything he says.
I really enjoyed Dr Mitchener. One of the best history classes I've taken. He put together an excellent class on World War II in the Pacific. Take notes! He gives you the essay questions for the exam - normally 8 - and then breaks them into 3 groups of 2 from which you chose 1 from each group. Notes are best but he does have books you can also reference. Great class from a good perspective of where the Japanese were "coming from" and how the US won that war.
Great lecturer: If you have any interest in history whatsoever, this is the professor for you. Anyone who enjoys lectures will like this professor even more. Tests are purely memorization however, and each test covers quite a bit of information. be ready to study constantly if you want to pass these tests.
His tests are killer if you skip class. The way his exams are set up take some getting used to and grading can be a bit frustrating because your answers MUST BE PERFECT!!!
Great lecturer if you enjoy upper level History classes. He knows his fields of study extremely well and provides lectures that are easy to follow (sometimes gets a bit off topic, but still interesting). Was lenient on grading tests, allowed the class a chance to make up part of first exam so we didnt start the semester out totally in the whole.
This class isn't especially difficult just pretty boring.. Dr. Mitchener is obviously excited about this topic but has a hard time passing that excitement on to his students.
I hated his class. I enjoy history, but he made it so boring and not fun. Don't skip class, you will seriously regret it. I skipped a few times and I was always asking others around me for their notes from the last class. I wouldn't take his class if you want an easy A. Study guide: 50 vocab about 20 or so are on the test, short answer & 1 essay
Knows his field. Good lectures with the relevant material needed to pass or understand the main material. A very nice guy once you get to talk with him, but purposefully starts out day one strict and borderline obtuse. He always gives you a review with the exact essays on it. If you can't pass a class like his, you need to rethink college.
I'm usually a straight-A student, studied my ass off for his exams and still got a C. He reviews material rapidly; goes over entire essay questions within the span of 10-15 min. If your attention drifts for a minute or two it can literally cost you 10-20 points on a test. Don't take his summer session.
He gives you a review that is basically the test.
If you like military history, then take Dr. Mitchener. If not, then prepare to be excruciatingly bored. I took a summer course, and he packed A LOT of material into each class; missing one was not an option and the lectures tended to run over as well. On a positive note, the test reviews were comprehensive and extremely helpful. Take lots of notes!
Great lectures! He is very detailed and thorough. There are only four grades so make them count. He is very specific about his paper which was 12 pages, though it pretty much writes itself. Show up, listen, take notes, and start the paper early and you will be fine.
He literally gives you the test before hand. If you don't study, you won't do well. If you do study you can get a 100 on every test. Only 4 tests. Go to class. Look at your review and take good notes on the essay topics. Not a bad class at all. STUDY!!!
The good: Dr. Mitchener knows his history very well. His review sheets are the test. No excuse for surprises. The bad: Super fast lecturer. Literally impossible to write even half of what he spits out of every lecture w/out a laptop. He mumbles A LOT. Little class interaction. Just stands there for an hour. How to pass: take really good notes!!!
His lectures are long and packed with information, so if one will be at a disadvantage if any classes are missed/skipped. If you show a strong attendance rate, he will help with notes if you happen to miss a class. His classes are tough, but they force you to invest time and energy to know the material. I prefer this style.
He hands out reviews that are essentially the tests. Study those and prepare for the essays and you'll do fine. Only grades were three tests and the final. He takes class time seriously and lectures up until the last minute. Take notes and pay attention and you'll do fine.
Memorizing dozens of dates and names with no word bank, so if you do take the class then be prepared to study for this class more than any other. Book is NECESSARY to have etc...
Lectures are long, he tends to mumble and talk very low so don't sit in the back! Very little to no class interaction and he gives out information way to fast to write down! Tests consist of 20 fill in the blank questions with no word bank to help you. Two short answer questions and one essay question, you have to complete this test in 50 minutes!!
Had to take this class for an advanced History credit but knew nothing about the subject. I learned a lot but this is not an easy class; the Professor expects you to work for a good grade like that is the only class you are taking. He does offer extra credit but this class requires a lot of time and memorization. Essay is hit or miss.
I was able to make a C in the class, however if you study well you could probably make an A. I skipped more than I should have and didn't really study but I was still able to pass. He rambles a lot, and if you don't love history you will probably be bored to tears, don't take him for an 8 am you will fall asleep.
If you don't love history, don't take. Not teaching to inform students, it seems like he's teaching to prove how much he knows. His way or the highway, and if he's having a bad day he may passive-aggressively take it out on the class. He gets upset if he thinks you're taking notes based on the screen notes he gives and not his words.
His class had 4 tests, with no comprehensive final and he gives very clear reviews (vocab list and essay prompts) before each test. However, you must pay VERY close attention in lecture as most test material comes straight from lecture. His lectures were very boring, especially at 8am, but otherwise his class is manageable.
he shows no interest in students grades, does not use blackboard, and his lectures are too fast
He is not clear on what he wants for tests. He grades really hard with little feedback. He cares more about you giving him exactly what he wants rather than proving you know all the material. His lectures are fast with few visuals. He read his notes for lecture A LOT. Don't read at me, I can read myself. Do not take.
Make sure to pay close attention to your lectures. Pay attention and actually learn and you will have no homework or have to cram study. You can get an A, but you have to work for it. At the very least, he gives good informative lectures that you CAN learn from if you put in the effort. "An education is a choice not a given"
Come to class to get the attendance. Lectures are everything, so pay more attention to what he says than anything else that shows up on the projector. Your grades rest solely on the tests, so study up. These tests aren't survey/intro level. No multiple choice; fill in the blank, short answer and essay.
Come to class for his lectures! He do not put up anything on blackboard. Which makes you pay attention in class! We need more professors like him! He gives a review a week before the test, which that IS the test! Study it and you will do fine! All written test! You DO need the reader textbook. Highly recommend! Straight forth with his tests!
Listen, I'm a history major and HATED this class. The tests are so ridiculous, he ISN'T clear on what he wants. The tests are not multiple choice, and he gives you a review with a certain amount of questions and only asks some of them on the test. His class is lecture based, so you HAVE to attend it to get the material for learning.
Wouldn't recommend this course. Tough curriculum, confusing lectures.
Unfortunately the professor was lacking in providing adequate feedback when it came to both the exams and one essay of the semester. I wouldn't recommend taking this class even if you're a history fanatic. The lectures are bland.
The only grades that are involved in this class are the tests with no extra credit opportunities until the Final Exam. Now the lectures may seem boring, you really have to pay attention and take down notes, he gives you all the information needed to ace the exam. Highly recommend notecards when studying, not quizlet. Memorization is key to passing.
The Professor's classes are very difficult. All of his exams have three sections, fill in the blank (no word bank) short answer and essay. He is a very hard grader and he expects A LOT out of his essays. Basically, I only missed 2 lectures in the entire semester and I got a D. I would't take his class if I had a heavy course load otherwise.
He gives review material before tests and only counts your three best tests, you might be able to skip the final. He uses every minute of every class. Don't skip it will be a pain to catch up. He rambles and mumbles so be prepared. Made us turn in a draft for the big paper but gave little feedback. Not a hard class just very very boring.
Be prepared to take many notes but hes actually an extremely intelligent professor.
Professor Mitchener is an amazing history professor. This class is very lecture heavy and I don't recommend it to anyone that is not a fan of history or a good note taker. If you skip class you won't do well since the tests rely heavily on the lectures. Professor Mitchener gives you a review before every test, so just study and you will do fine.
Very interesting prof. REALLY knows his stuff! GREAT lectures, VERY detailed. Time flew by in class, always ended too soon. Required 12 page body on essay of Naval doctrine same as required by U.S. Naval War College. I thought that was a little excessive for undergrad class. But, did allow extra credit work. I would take this prof classes ANYTIME.
His rubric for exams REALLY are the exams like he says. Take good notes or find a friend who does. Some bonus points for attendance. The main reason to attend is to get notes to compare to the rubric he gives out a week before his exams. If it's not on there it won't be on the exam. He's happy to answer questions and likes telling stories.
Good things: Tells you exactly what will be on the test. Gives out sheets that tell you exactly what to study. Bad things: Lectures can drone on and are all verbal. If you struggle taking notes I wouldn't suggest this class. However, Dr. Mitchener is a friendly guy and offers a lot of extra credit toward the end.
Only 4 tests. He gives you a review for each that has basically the entire test on it. Just study the review and you'll be fine. There's a textbook, but you don't really use it. Lectures are where almost all the information comes from. Pay attention. You'll need to take a lot notes, so be ready. Nice person and he'll gladly answer any question.
He doesnt put anything online so you have to keep up with your grades and the powerpoints he shows in class help a lot with the tests. If you show up and take lots of notes its a pretty easy class, the reviews he gives out are pretty much exactly the tests. The only grades for this class are four tests so you have to do well on all of them.
This man gives out extra credit like he's Oprah Winfrey. He doesn't curve tests usually, but he gives out reviews that are literally the test plus a little more, so you don't need a curve. He takes attendance every class and uses this to give you the "benefit of the doubt" at the end of the semester if you need a bump. Overall very easy class!!
This class was pretty difficult for me because of its structure. It was really only four main exams and an extra credit assignment. Lectures are given verbally, so you won't want to skip. Overall, a very nice professor.
I took Naval History because it was an elective that fit with my schedule and ending up loving it! I have absolutely zero background in History (English major), so I was a little worried about it at first. However, all the the information you need to well on the tests is clearly covered in the lectures with no outside reading at all :)
I got an A in his class, however his classes were boring, not because of the topic itself instead because of the way he explained the subject. About the exams, the reviews were literally the exam, but the reviews were hard. 4 essays in the review, but he chooses 2. So in that way it was hard.
Take very detailed notes. He'll give a review before a test which will cover half of the topics from the lecture. Go to your detailed notes and memorize EVERYTHING about the topics listed in the review. Powerpoints will be uploaded online BUT this does not cover everything that will be on the test. So, it is recommended you attend class.
He made us write 4 essays in a single week, his lectures each last an hour long and largely have nothing to do with the topics covered in the textbook assignments. A student that had transferred to UNT requested an extension as there were 4 essays plus another weeks worth of work due within 4 days of her starting the class and she was denied.
Take literally any other professor available. Had 4 essays due in one week and he did not even open the modules until the week of, so you can't even get a head start on the lectures. Has two essays due as a midterm that you have to submit between an 8 hour period PLUS a signature assignment essay due the same day. Lots of writing and note taking.
Personally, I find his lectures interesting. He explains chronologically and very detailed. He's also very understanding and works with his students to ensure their success. Love you Donny <3
His lectures are straightforward and pretty easy to understand. Granted they're long, but he gives you all of the information you need to write your essay, so as long as you take your notes while listening to the lecture, it'll be an easy A. His online assignments generally took me about an hour or two out of the week to finish. His class is really
The BEST professor I had my first semester. The class is very easy and straightforward. Midterm and final are just essays over certain lectures he gives (only 500 words). All you have to do is read the chapter and do the homework & quizzes. Highly recommend taking him!
I took this class as a history major, and the professor NEVER lectured during the actual class periods. He posted recorded lectures before the midterm and final, but other than that all we did was do the activities from the textbook company. The material is easy, but the professor gives you writing assignments that barely apply to the subject.
Everything is pretty much self explanatory for this class. Youll pass the quizzes as long as you read the material needed. The exams were extremely easy as well, you just have to look at the notes and lecture he provides for you. Very easy and understanding professor.
Very well lectures gives exam notes ahead of time in an organized brake down, as long as you take notes and look over them its not difficult.
Great class and not too hard. Lots of notes but not too bad. Professor cares about the subject and is understanding.
Prof Mitchener is very knowledgeable in the class content. It was difficult to keep up since he sometimes didn't have Powerpoints to go with the lectures, and I don't know how to structure my notes without them :') 4 tests and a 10-page essay. The tests are from both lectures and the books, so you def need the books and to go to class.
If you are not good at essay exams, this class isn't for you. 80% of your grade was exams, 20% each. Last 20% was assignments. Extremally Lecture heavy. This class really depends on the TA's cause they are the ones that grade your exams.
Professor Mitchener is a kind person but the way his class is setup is solely lectures. There is only 5 grades for the whole semester, 4 exams and 1 signature assignment. The tests are 10 fill In the blank questions (4 points each), 2 short response (15 points each) and 1 essay (30 points). DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
There is no homework in this class however your grade depends on the exams. His lectures were heavy but are essential for the tests. As long as you take notes and study for the exam you'll do great.
Only assignments are exams and signature assignments, and the reviews are on Quizlet. Super easy if you study the night before, reviews are exactly like the exam.
Only grades is tests but he is very clear on what's on it. Lectures are often a bit unrelated to tests. Easy class
Uncompromising professor. In general too tenured to be considered worth enrolling given the fact there are easier ways to get your core classes done. One mistake on your exam could cost you an entire semester's grade. Unless you enjoy exams, I recommend you take another professor for 2610. Least favorite professor at UNT.
He was AMAZING!!! As long as you study for the test (the review literally gives you the options of what questions will be on the test) you will 100% pass his class. Lecture heavy but he makes it fun. I would take his class over and over!
Literally the easiest professor for this class. Only grades are 3 tests but he puts a review on canvas that is the exact test. Tests are 10 fill in the blank vocab words, 2 short answers(literally a sentence) and 1 long answer (a paragraph MAX),and he drops the lowest test including the final. Study the night before and you dont need to go to class
Great professor but 4 tests make up the whole grade so tank one and you might as well drop the class.
Amazing
This professor is awful. Too tenured to care about anything other than exams, which are incredibly hard. No multiple choice, only fill in the blank. He technically has one other assignment which is only worth 5% of the total grade. Avoid at any cost.
The professor seems great and is a friendly guy. However, his teaching style is definitely an acquired taste. He uses no notes or markers on the screen for reference of importance, he just talks and you gotta write as fast as you can and hope you get the notes that he said before he moves on. I wouldn't recommend the professor
Dr. Mitchener is a top tier lecturer. Extremely knowledgeable and very engaging. Clear expectations, exam only (v difficult), laser focused test reviews. If you don't learn from traditional lecture, this course may be hard for you. If you like traditional lecture, like me, this should a very easy A without much studying.
Honestly there's no point in going to the lectures if you just do the study guide, but you have to go to the lectures because you will fail if you miss to many classes. He gives extra credit for every exam which ensures you pass but he only tells you that write what you deem is important. TA's do most of the grading and they are very hard graders.
Notes are published on Canvas. Attendance taken every day. Reviews for tests are posted a week in advance, reviews are basically an answer key to the test. Complete the review well and study it hard and you'll ace the class. Only 3 or 4 exams. They are not cumulative.
Your grade is 95% tests and 5% is one assignment BUT the test reviews are exactly whats going to be on the test and he gives extra credit worth 50 points on EACH test. His lectures are useful to go to but not necessary. There's no reason you should fail this class. Also don't buy the textbook it can all be found online
This professor is just awful. Don't take. Only graded on 4 exams, the reviews are posted but exams are fill in the blank (no word bank) and two essays with info from the textbooks.
He is very passionate about history and gives us the notes on canvas to follow along with so you don't have to handwrite notes. Gives 50 bonus points on each test where all you do is the review and is very helpful for the tests because of how similar they are to the tests. Mostly just lectures and you soak in the information.
Lectures are rich with information, if you're interested in the subject, but the course itself can be completed by doing the extra credit and study guides. Study guides are exactly what will be on the test, so just memorize them. The purchased textbook is not needed; I would not suggest you buy it. Chill professor and easy A after the extra credit.
This professor only grades 4 exams and a signature assignment so the 4 tests have greater weight so if you fail one it's going to be bad. The exams are 10 blank questions and there is no word bank and essay questions give extra credit which is 50 points towards the exams. Overall, he is a good professor and is lenient by giving you 50 points extra!
Every test you are given a chance to get up to 50 extra credit points for simply defining terms and events. He makes the class incredibly easy to not only pass but to excel. He is also very funny in a dry humor way, and it made going to class significantly more fun.
I ENDED WITH A 150 IN THIS CLASS. Please take this professor if you have to take 2610. The tests are easy; he basically gives you the test in advance, and all you have to do is memorize it. Attendance is NOT mandatory, but it can boost your grade if you are a point away from a higher grade. PLEASE TAKE THIS COURSE WITH DR. MITCHENER.
He provides around 200 points of extra credit so you have to actually work to fail this class. The test reviews are very through.
i would probably teach this class the same way too if i spent this much time learning about naval warfare. in another life i think he'd be an incredible navy recruiter.
The class is honestly pretty easy. I almost never paid attention and still got an A. The reviews are so detailed that you can just answer those and then just spend a little time memorizing those answers and you're set. And the same reviews that you can use to glide through the class give you an automatic 50% on the test. Love how he teaches.
The course isn't hard. Just do your EC and read the notes on Canvas. His lectures were very fun. I honestly just looked forward to going and watching him teach. I recommend doing your EC and making flashcards on Anki at the same time: he's a stickler for getting your dates right and your spelling right. Just study and you'll get an A.
So easy to get an A in this class. Lets you bring notes for all of the exams PLUS 50 points of extra credit for writing terms + definitions. Also tells you exactly what questions are going to be asked on the exam. Even if you skip every class and the entire long essay section, you can leave the exam room in 10 minutes and get a 120 on every exam.
He's very passionate about his work, you can tell he actually loves and enjoys the material he's teaching. the only sort of grades he has are his tests and like, one or two other assignments. very easy class!
He is a good professor, easy tests if you do the review. Easy to follow lectures. Provides clear instructions for reviews, tests and assignments.
He gave really great extra credit opportunities
Great professor!! Lit gives you the exam beforehand so you know what is expected, offers extra credit for every exam. Very passionate about what he teaches. Would take again!!
I love how this class doesn't have homework. All the grades In this class are monthly tests and this professor gives a ton of extra credit on his tests so you literally can't fail if you do the extra credit. I loved his energy and when he would finish his lecture early he would dismiss class. I found his lectures entertaining and learned a lot.
