He doesn't know how to teach at all but he's nice. Tests have multiple choice and short answer, but TAs are instructed to grade HARSHLY on them. First test average was a 70. Powerpoint slides are useless, and there's heavy reading in book and articles. He does give 5 points added to overall avg if you attend class. 2 tests 1 final (not cumulative)!
Generally the topic of anthropology seems interesting, however this class is not as fun as you would think. There are only 3 grades which are your main sectional tests. The tests consist of multiple choice and short essay questions which are graded very harshly. I would not advise this class, it was more hurtful toward the GPA than helpful.
Everything said below is true. But at the end of the semester he changed the final exam to just multiple choice, and every one did a-ton better. He also gave an extra credit opportunity plus 5 pts added to your final grade for attendence.
Kept the class really interesting, and definitely loves the topic. He gives open note pop quizzes which adds 1/2 a letter grade to your final grade. Tests are multiple choice and essay but aren't that bad.
Kinda boring. Lots of required reading in the text and various articles. Gives 5pt raise to overall avg if you attend class for his pop quizzes. (don't be late for those! didn't accept one cause I was 5 mins late one time) Tests were somewhat difficult. Interesting vidoes but boring powerpoints that are not posted online.
Nelson did a great job at teaching this subject! He kept it very interesting and showed videos from time to time too. His tests were never that hard. Plus you get tons of chances for extra credit! If your there for 4 attendance quizzes, you get 5 points added to your final grade! Definitely my easiest class this semester!!
Dr. Nelson was a great professor, he is very knowledgeable and class was always interesting. He gives open note pop quizzes but if you are there for 4 of them you receive 5 points to your final grade. There are weekly readings but most are interesting. Also the TA's hold review sessions before each test and I definitely recommend going.
If you have to take Anthro, take it with Nelson. Pretty funny guy. He gives random attendance quizzes...you can miss one and still get 5 bonus points! Gives you a study guide for the tests which are pretty straight forward. He goes REALLY fast on the powerpoints so bring a computer to type them!
Nelson is a pretty funny guy. Some material is really interesting, but a lot is really boring. He does show a lot of videos, and there are 5 random attendance quizzes. If you are there for 4 of them, you get 5 points added to your final grade. He offers a study guide and review session before every test. Pretty easy. No need for reading the book.
Professor Nelson is hilarious! He always tries his hardest to relate the material he covers to his students. His tests are really straightforward and easy to study for. Take him if you plan on taking Anth 1102!
SO awesome. The class was incredibly easy and the tests come straight from the study guide.
I took this class thinking it would be interesting, but I wasn't really into it when I signed up. I ended up loving this class, though. Attendance isn't really mandatory, but there are pop quizzes for extra credit. He's really smart and funny and I thought he was a pretty cute guy. Not an **** or anything.
This was a great class! Nelson is an interesting professor MOST of the time. Do the readings, go to class (it helps a lot on the test), do the study guides, go to the review sessions, and you'll make an A. Only 3 tests the entire semester. Be there for 4 of 5 attendance quizes and he will add 5 points to your course grade.
Pretty interesting, go to class for the pop quizzes, the extra 5 points are really nice. Tests are not too bad, you'll do well if you are good at MC type tests.
I LOVE Dr. Nelson. He was so nice and kept me interested. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you're there for all of his attendance quizzes, he adds 5 points to your final grade. He's very interested in the class and he's not very hard either. As long as you take notes and pay attention, the class is not hard. I love this professor!
Dr. Nelson is one of the most boring teachers ever. He is very very nice but I had this class at 9:30am and fell asleep almost every day because his class is uninteresting. He shows a lot of videos and tests are heavily based on the readings. The extra 5 points for attendance saved my grade. If you go to class and actually read, you'll do fine.
Attendance is pretty much mandatory because the videos showed in class are on the test as well as long packets that you have to read in which he discusses.. plus the 5 pts added to final grade for attendance. Tests weren't bad, but final was pretty tough and brought my grade down to a B. Also need to read the book
just go to class and youll be fine. the 5 points help a ton. do the reading and the tests are easy. i found most of the videos online, so i slept in class. real easy to make an A
I liked this professor a lot! He made the class very interesting and will make you laugh! If you need to take an anthropology, he is the teacher to take!
Extremely easy class. Great professor.
Easiest class I've ever taken. Great professor. Bonus points given. Tests are straight forward.
Very nice; approachable if you need to ask a question. Definitely attractive. Looks like Matthew Fox. This class, however was SO boring. At least a third was about fossils and monkeys and evolution, which was not at all what I thought it would be/what I wanted to learn about. 5 xtra credit points for being at 4/5 attendance checks. Lots of reading.
Dr. Nelson is a great teacher. He is very knowledgable in his subject area and really wants his students to succeed. He gives you lots of assignments to help boost your score. Also, attendance is not mandatory, but if you attend 85% of the classes, you receive 5 points on your OVERALL grade. Highly recommend him.
About 1 reading per class. Usually 1 commentary on the reading per week-includes summary + questions. It gets repetitive, but it helps to ensure that you read the articles before the exam if you do the commentaries. Mostly lecture, less discussion. One group paper and presentation due at the end of the semester. I learned a lot about development.
This class was heavy on reading, especially in the beginning. A lot of it felt unnecessary bc the tests focused more on broad themes. It was an interesting class though, & Dr. Nelson was very nice & knowledgable. There is a group project at the end that is worth a big part of your grade, including a presentation & an essay.
The class was interesting, & Dr. Nelson was very nice & knowledgeable. However, it's heavy on readings, especially in the beginning, which seemed a little excessive since the tests mostly focused on broader themes. There's also a group project at the end that is worth about 50% of your grade, including a presentation & a research paper.
He gives informative lectures, although they are heavily based on readings. He will ask questions to the class based on the readings, as well as assignments that correlate to them. Pay attention, take your notes, and study well for the tests. There were only 3 tests for me, but I have needed to study strongly for them.
He is a great teacher he is kind of awkward and tells dad jokes but he's pretty laid back. He is very knowledgeable about the topic. Beware of how your TA grades because some grade harder than others. He takes attendance pretty much every day so come to class plus he gives a lot of information during lectures. Not an easy A but it's not hard.
Dr. Nelson is a great teacher and he curves his tests.
Dr. Nelson is a good teacher who cares about his students and the subject. However, his lectures and the class in general is so boring. I found it very hard to be interested in which makes studying difficult to do. But the material itself isnt hard and if you can study it and read the book, you will make an A.
He's a good professor but the class requires a lot of reading, both from the textbook and online. Lectures can be very boring. Homework is pretty easy and TAs grade exams fairly. Final wasn't cumulative and the exams were curved which was nice.
Don was my favorite professor this past semester. He has clear standards that he wants you to meet, so as long as you do that you're totally fine. Just don't be like me and turn stuff in late because he didn't mention it in class until the day it was due. Literally just listen, take notes, and read what he tells you (which isn't that much).
Nelson as a teacher/ professor is amazing; he's super nice and funny. I had to take this as a humanities course, so I would recommend. Tests were kind of difficult; so you need to study for them. But discussions are a guaranteed A if you do them and turn them in on time!!
Prof. Nelson is very funny and endearingly nerdy. He assigns readings before each class, but it isn't necessary that you read each word. There were times I didn't read at all and times I skimmed to take away the general idea. TA's were nice and helpful and love when people go to office hours. Tests and assignments were easy A's with some effort
Dr. Nelson knows a lot about his topic. You are allowed to miss 5 classes, but I dont recommend that. You will get most of the info thats on the test from the lectures, and not just whats on the PowerPoint or in the book. So if you go to class, take decent notes, and study the vocab in the book, youll do good in the class.
Professor Nelson is a solid choice, make sure you get the textbook and read the end of the chapter summaries because those make up 50% of the test and memorizing key definitions. Not a hard class at all. Did not read the chapters at all and skipped to the summaries and got an A- in the class. Also make a groupme, he is a funny guy.
I wish there was words to describe how much I disliked this class. Nelson is boring and will repeat the same topic (race) until you've done it 50 million times. I would never take this class again. Attendance is mandatory, but a waste of time as he is horrible at explaining concepts. I taught myself. AVOID this class, please.
Dr. Nelson is a really nice guy, and he's a good teacher. But this class was pretty much all discussion, and he forced us to talk every single class. There was a whole lot of reading; sometimes four readings per week, but as long as you stay ahead of them they aren't too overwhelming. A very interesting class though; I recommend it.
Not the best class I've ever taken, but not the worst by any means. It seems like it's going to be an easy A but the tests can be challenging. The daily pop quizzes are just for participation, and he allows 5 absences. Assignments and discussions are super easy, but you do have to read for about every class. TA's make or break you here
Nelson is great at teaching! He has Powerpoints he reviews in class (and posts later), as well as additional information (and sometimes stories) that may help. There are a few homework assignments and discussion posts that count towards your grade, in addition to tests. Overall very easy if you keep up with the class!
Good lecturer and makes anthropology interesting. Super passionate about what he does. Occasional homework, but it's not hard and the TA's give you good feedback on it. If you go to class and pay attention, the tests aren't bad either. I would take him again.
He does a good job teaching the material, but hes not accessible. Were only supposed to talk to the TAs if we have questions, which makes him feel super far away from us. If you show up to class and pay decent attention, youll be fine. Four tests, 75% individual, then you retake it in a group for the other 25%. Not a bad deal.
Very easy class. Tests are so easy if you go to class and take notes. Lectures aren't the most interesting, but show up and you'll easily pass. Four tests, seven "quizzes". Takes attendance daily.
Dr. Nelson is a great professor! The tests are pretty easy, especially if you make a quizlet of terms. Participation is taken on Tophat every class and a couple one-question quizzes. There are 7 short writing projects, which were fairly simple.
Dr. Nelson is very boring, but he is a nice guy. The class is pretty easy.
Dr. Nelson's lectures were very boring, but overall he was very passionate about the course and Anthropology. Tests are 70% individual, and then re-taken with a group for 30% -- easy!!! Everything is graded by TAs, and I disliked mine greatly but not everyone felt that way about them.
Dr. Nelson is a very good teacher! The awesome thing about this course is that you can take the test twice, once by yourself for 70% of the test grade and once with your classmates for 30% of the test grade. This is a great way to learn new things and facilitate communication. The textbook is required but the lectures are more important for tests
Dr. Nelson's lectures were slightly boring, but you can tell how passionate he is about the subject. As long as you do all of the written assignments, go to class for participation points, and study his lectures you'll get an A. Overall, not a hard class at all.
Nelson is fine. He assigns a good bit of reading and the tests come from both the reading and the lectures. He isn't boring but not engaging either. His TAs grade everything; some are harsh and some aren't. Grade is based on attendance, tests, and 7 assignments that aren't too bad. Class is generally pretty easy but the readings are kind of extra.
Dr. Nelson is a really great person. He cares so much about his students and wants everyone to do well in the class. Lectures can be very boring, but we always got out of class early.
Easy class, took it last semester, got an A without having to study much besides the vocab
Class was pretty easy. I didn't really read the book, so any information from the book came from quizlets. For exams, he allows you to take it once on your own, then a second time with your peers to help you actually retain the information, which is helpful! He combines these grades as your final exam grade. He also does 7 simple projects.
This is a VERY easy class and Nelson is so nice. There, isn't much work, just readings before lectures, and assignments called "steps", but they are super easy and do not take much time to complete. His test are easy, as long as you study and READ. You take the test once by yourself, and then after you take it with a group. Easy but boring class.
I would definitely recommend taking Nelson for an easier world culture credit. The amount of work is extremely reasonable, and Nelson is so nice and approachable. The tests are easy if you study the slides from class. He wants his students to do well. He does have random easy pop quizzes and takes attendance, so come to clas
Great class. Very interesting. Learned a lot. Dr. Nelson is a great guy with a sense of humor. We did Seven Steps to Becoming an Anthropologist throughout the semester, which were mostly fun activities. I would take this class again... you have to work hard for the A, though.
Donald Nelson is a great professor. It just depends on the TA you receive. This class was pretty easy, some days are just more boring than others. Dr. Nelson definitely knows what he is talking about, so if this is something you're interested in (or just need for the culture credit) I suggest taking him.
Dr. Nelson is a great teacher, and although sometimes the lectures can be boring, this class is super easy to do well in. The tests you take once by yourself and then can work with the people around you, and the homework which are easy as long as you put in effort is worth as much as the tests are. Would definitely recommend!
One of the easiest A's I've gotten. You take every test twice, the first time by yourself (worth 70%) and the second time with the people around you (worth 30%).
Very nice professor and I highly recommend taking any FYOS class he teaches. Everything is graded based on if you complete the assignment, not content.
A LOT of reading is required for this course. Lectures are not terrible and neither are the activities he requires you to complete. Do the readings and review his lectures for the exam and you'll be okay. Exams are a mixture of definitions and application questions so make sure you are understanding the material conceptually.
lectures can be very boring. you take tests twice, once by yourself and once with a group. some questions can be tricky but not too bad. questions come from lectures and readings that are assigned. be prepared for some long readings. random busy work but overall easy class.
Nelson is really cool. The class is insanely easy, but you still learn so much. The assignments are not hard at all, and they really help you get a good understanding of anthropology. Anthropology is not even my major but I would take the class again because of Nelson. His tests are easy and you get to take them twice with a group. I recommend!!!!!
Mr. Nelson is the worst. This class was boring, pointless, and I learned nothing. He lectures the whole class and it is so so so boring. He uses tophat but the questions are impossible and have nothing to do with what we learned. As long as you do the assignments you'll be fine, but don't expect to like this class or Mr. Nelson.
He was a great choice for Anthro and he made the class so fun, even if you're not interested in the subject and is a wonderful and clear professor. I suggest reading, because it really does help, and he does group tests for portion of the grade. Assignments are easy and thought provoking, and the TAs are awesome and super helpful too!
I LOVE the layout of this class. We basically have lecture for the first 15 mins and then one of the two days we go into a discussion group where we work together. Only downfall is you can miss two lectures and one discussion before it counts against you. No tests, weekly quizzes we can take twice for highest grade, and 6 homework-like assignments.
Dr. Nelson is a really cool and nice guy. We have a 15 minute lecture twice a week, then on one of those days go to a group with a TA. People's experiences probably differ based on the TA. I had Ilkka who was great. There's no textbook which saves money. And the class is crazy easy so you should be fine. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Nelson is a great professor. The only grades are from weekly open note quizzes and activities called steps. Discussion groups meet once a week. He does not overload students with work which in turn makes the class more fun. He lectures for 20 minutes and then breaks into discussion groups for the remainder of the class if it is your day.
He is so sweet and caring. There is a lot of reading, and attendance is mandatory. However, there are no tests. Open note quizzes, attendance, and assignments called steps. Do the work and show up, and you will have an A for sure.
Prof Nelson is a good professor: his lectures are short and sweet. No test for the class. Weekly quizzes that you get two tries on. Discussion group is the biggest participation part. Discussion groups are an inconvenience but definitely bearable. 10/10 would take again
I really enjoyed Dr. Nelson's class this semester! It was online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he still found ways to make anthropology interesting. We didn't have tests, but we had simple projects instead. He was very lenient and caring, and if you want or need to take anthropology, I highly suggest taking his class!
Dr. Nelson provides weekly readings and discussion. One PackBack post, two replies, a quiz and small group discussion required weekly based on the reading. The reading is a little lengthy but he gives you an entire week to do it. As long as you familiarize yourself with it you'll be fine. Best professor I have had so far and easiest class!
Not hard at all but I found myself having a lot of assignments or busy work for it being an elective. Attendance is graded. There is lecture, reading, discussion group, discussion post, quiz, for every week. You are graded on those things & on "steps" or assignments as well. Again, not hard but more work than expected :) still a great choice
I really enjoyed Dr. Nelsons class this semester. There was a lot of busy work, but if you actually try youll come out with an A. Most of the time we worked as a group on projects. Also there was a weekly pack back & attendance is graded. Very good class to take as a freshman- easy A.
Good experience all around. There are weekly assignments, individual or with your assigned group, but they are pretty easy and don't take more than an hour or two. Dr Nelson is good at making concepts easy to understand, and is just a genuinely nice guy. Also keeps elc very updated with grades/assignments/due dates which relieved a lot of stress.
Professor Nelson's class was pretty interesting, and he's a nice guy. As long as you attend class, and do the assignments you should be fine. My only complaint is the group projects, if you get a bad group, youre stuck the entire semester and there is group assignments due every other week so, good luck. There is basically no class most Fridays!
TAKE THIS ANTH TEACHER Class is very low maintenance and chill. Don't over complicate anything you learn bc it is not that serious tbh. Only Con: Problem Sets (quizzes) are riddles, but you get multiple attempts.
Professor Nelson was an amazing professor to have for anthropology. While the class heavily relied on group projects, I think this was a better approach rather than just regular exams. Work is graded by TAs, and although sometimes they grade harshly they allow you to make up the work to get a better grade. Overall, a great course recommend it!
The class is very easy, a mix of math and problem solving skills. Group work for the whole semester so if you get a good group you will be fine. The TA's can grade a little harsh but you're able to resubmit the assignments for a better grade. Weekly packpack but really easy points.
Professor Nelson was a cool teacher. Every week, you have to do Packback, but it is graded for participation, and you just have to talk about what you learn in class each week. There were four quizzes, but they were all online, and you get multiple attempts to get a 100. Group project due at the end of the semester, but it's really easy.
It's a somewhat interesting class that is a super free A if you get a good group. He doesn't have class on Fridays either, which is super clutch, and he is a very nice guy.
TAKE HIM HE IS AWESOME. This was a chill class that was enjoyable and no stress at all. No classes Friday.
Dr. Nelson is super chill and keeps his class really easy. Groupwork makes up most of the class, but the assignments are clearly outlined which helps a lot. Participation is important but you can miss a few days. No in-person class on Fridays! You will probably know most of the content coming into the class. Would highly reccomend.
Dr. Nelson is a great professor who genuinely loves what he teaches! This specific course is very data-heavy, so be sure you have a clear understanding of graphs and numbers. The group assignments are very easy to get an A on, and the weekly homework can be completed in less than 10 minutes! His class is very interesting, and he teaches it well!
Dr. Nelson is a fine professor who is passionate about what he teaches. The group project seems silly because half the class ends up researching the same topic, and doesn't tell you what the project until halfway through. Your main point of contact for the class is a TA, daily written reflections / weekly discussion posts. Attendance is 12.5%
