I thought that Dr. Perine was a clear and to the point teacher. He teaches and gives tests straight from the book. It is not required that you show up for class, but it will affect your grade. If you pay attention, show up for all of his classes and make sure you understand the subject in the chapters before tests, you will do good. Great Teacher!
Great professor. One of only a few college professors that actually care about students. He explains concepts and is very straight forward. Right now he is the best Organic Chemistry instructor at USA. You will actually leave his class knowing that you learned something.
Dr. Perine is an awesome instructor--I learned a great deal in his class. His teaching is very clear, his exams are fair, and he always makes the class interesting.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR 100!! HE READ OUT OF THE BOOK AND NEVER WANTS TO HELP WITH QUESTIONS YOU HAVE HE FEELS YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW IT!! HIS TEST SUCK THE A MULTIPLE CHOICE LIKE OUT OF THE TEACHER EDITION!! he is a sucky teacher FOR 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy is pretty dang boring I'm not gonna lie, but his tests are easy and he gives you extra credit problems before each test. You probably can pull an A if you don't go to class, but make sure you work some problems, because his tests are just basic applications. Overall, I would recommend him to anyone.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR CHEM 100! If you have to take him dont bother asking questions he'll just make you feel dumb. He just isnt a good chem 100 teacher. I went to every class all he did was read out of the book. The only people who made a good grade were people who didnt go to class and studied on their own. : (
DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER TAKING THIS PROFESSOR FOR CHEM 100!!! I can't believe i paid money to have someone read a book to me. He gives unpredictable tests and makes you feel like an idiot at chemistry. You can forget asking questions because they will only get you a smart remark. With a class average around a D on every test, i dont think anyone understood him!
strongly recommend taking. explains things using the textbook and helps you really understand the material. tests are pretty much based off practice problems in the book. very personable too
While the class isn't meant to be hard, he makes it hard. He treats you like a 5 year old, making stupid analogies to explain, and then mocking you when you ask questions. Then, when the tests roll around, the material is easy yet he makes the questions impossible to understand. I skipped at least once or twice a week and still made a high B.
Great professor! I actually learned the material and he uses the book a lot so you can go home and review what you did in class. The tests reflected what we went over in class which is unheard of in Organic. If I would've taken the time to read outside of class during the semester I would've easily made an A. I'm taking him again for O-Chem 2.
I had him for CH100 and he definitely treated us like little children making stupid analogies and making fun of us. Seems like he treats newbies like this but I've heard good things about him for Organic. Not sure if I'll consider him or not... But I barely went to class, learned everything on my own, and made a high B.
Don't even ask him about something in the textbook. he will treat you as 5 years old. poor teacher. i gave -5/5
This is the best CH 131 class ever. He's very straight-forward and isn't out to trick anyone. Tests are 50 question multiple choice and he gives take home problems that can add 5 point to your test grade, so you can miss 7 questions and still make and A. He reads out of the book, which is boring, but if you got the book down you'll get an A.
He is not a very good teacher at all..he sits in his desk and reads out of a book. If you have a question he looks at you like your stupid and expects you to know everything. Not really that great. I wouldn't suggest him to anyone.
Has a sarcastic sense of humor(found enjoyable).Does not care if u come to class.Recommend not missing though because he explains the book.Yup he reads straight out of it too.Found this awesome.I knew exactly what to study 4.Test questions are a bit tricky though. He does offer extra credit for tests (do it!!it will also help u study 4 the test!)
when he lectures his examples never make any sense at all but when he is talking about the actual problem he goes through it very thoroughly and answers most questions. if he thinks its a stupid question he will make you look like an idiot
He is clear with his lectures but his test arent always this way. You HAVE to study or you will fail no doubt! If you do not have a sense of humor do not ask a question because his jokes can seem kind of harsh. He doesnt mean to be but it is. Also, DO NOT leave while he is lecturing, he will make jokes about you after you have left the room.
Makes you feel dumb if you ask any questions. On test I got all of my calculations right but missed his wordy true/false and multiple choice questions. If you can take someone else DO IT!
Do not take this professor! He reads straight from the book. Going to class is not necessary; although, it does help a little to attend. He spends more time on the easy stuff than the hard stuff. He made me feel like the class had no prior knowledge of chemistry. His tests are ridiculously difficult.
Do not listen to the good reviews! Don't waste your time coming to class. Instead, stay home and memorize the book. You will have better sucess this way, listen to me or find out after the second test. The final is standardized so its not nearly as hard as his test were.
Look guys, I understand where you're coming from about class being boring and reading from the book, but at least you know where the test are coming from! If you study the book and work the questions that he gives (for 5 pt bonus on the test) you'll be fine. There are def worse chem teachers than him! Would take him again!
He's the only professor I've ever had that's read directly out of the book. He gave us his evaluation sheets ON THE DAY OF THE FINAL, taking up test time, and then he came back to the room and thumbed through them and delivered them himself! He acted like he might scale and did not AT ALL! I had an A all semester, after the final an 89, got a B!
Reads straight from book, dont waste time coming to class. He does not even seem like he wants to be there, not helpful for comprehending material either. Left me feeling cheated and wishing I learned more. Take someone else if you can. Xcredit doesnt help either, tests are hard. I made a B, but didnt learn nearly as much as I needed to.
Dr. Perine is a good teacher and he explains everything like he's your friend. His discussions and lectures are good but dont let that fool you. His test are really confusing. unless you know the book word for word you'll spend 5 min on each question.
The course is very organized. Lecture is boring, Dr. Perine simply summarizes and explains the textbook. Exams are on 2 chapters at a time, so each exam covers a fair amount of material. Homework is optional, he gives extra points for doing it and turning it in with the exam. MUST HAVE the textbook, don't go cheap. Attendance isn't kept at all.
This professor talks down to his students and doesn't answer questions clearly. He's very unorganized. He gave a test once and forgot he assigned it, and many times the tests have nothing to do with what he teaches. He teaches higher level chem and that seems to be where his priorities lie. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR 100!!!
EXCELLENT!! easy A! i made an A on all of the labs and i never did pre-lab and i only di mylab report the night before class. he over explains things to you which is really good and so the labs aren't too hard. i recommend him!
The guy can teach. He has had a lot of experience so he always knows what he is talking about. He is very good, but if you do not like teachers who read from book, do not take him
Comments reveal a downwards trend over the years.I'm not sure if he's burned out or depressed, but he'd rather be anywhere but in the classroom.Tests have nothing to do with lecture. Arbitrary grading.2 identical tests will get different grades.I feel sorry for the guy.I hope he gets through whatever is bothering him and starts teaching again :(
he is a good teacher. he reads from a powerpoint, and attendance isnt mandatory, but its best if u go just to get notes.
this teacher reads off slides that he didnt even write. the tests seem decent when youre taking it and you feel as though you do well on the test, but then you end up failing the test. they are very tricky. he makes no effort at all to be a somewhat good teacher.
class can be a challege if you dont atten or watch videos
This Professor should not consider teaching again. He reads off of slides word from word that he did not create! I would never in my life suggest this awful professor to anyone. The Dr. from his name should be taken away. (As the first day of class he tells you, he came from the generation of cheating) What ever you do, RUN!
dr. p is a good teacher. Yes he does read from the slides, but he goes out of his way to help the student. He allows the students to create study groups in which he attends and helps the class. His class lectures are horrible in my oppinion he needs to work out problems. but because he does do the study groups all he does during that time is proble
Dr. Perine is a very hard professor and only reads off of slides in the class. He makes fun of you when you ask things wrong but he is funny. His tests are tricky and he doesnt care much about the 100 level class because he teaches organic so unless you are a genius with chemistry try to avoid him
Somewhat rude, doesn't attempt to spark interest in the students. But not the worst.
He didn't care about his students at all, very rude!! did make fun of students if asking a simple question. makes the concepts harder then they really need to be. i would never recommend anyone to take him! or will i ever take him again!! i was better off just reading the book then listening to his lectures!!
Alright guy, but by far the class was extremely difficult. He really could care less whether or not you learn anything. Made no attempt to assist students.
Don't recommend taking him at all. Can be funny but usually SO boring. Reads directly off the slides (all of which are put online, so you can read them yourself just as easily)... not very helpful either. Tests are rather difficult. However, if you are good at chem & remember everything from high school chem, you might be ok.
Dr.P is a good teacher. He can be somewhat uninteresting, but the material isn't for entertainment. Class attendance isn't mandatory, so people NEVER come. When I had a concern about a test, he helped me because I showed an interest. My advice is to read the slides along with the book. I repeat, READ THE BOOK. It helps in lectures & on the test.
Awful "teacher." I learned absolutely nothing in this class. He reads directly from the slides using examples that are not related to the topic at all. You are better off just not attending his class rather than suffering through it. I DO NOT recommend him, unless you already have a complete understanding of chemistry.
Avoid taking his class at all costs. He is very rude and expects you to know and remember every little thing taught in class. He talks down upon the student that has a question. Also he believes in dumb questions so its hard to ask questions because you never know which one will be "dumb." I haven't missed a single class and i'm failing.
Dr. Perine is the WORST teacher ever. He should be fired. He is really rude and disrespectful, he hates when you ask questions. I feel we deserve our money back for his class because you do not learn anything an he could care less about it!
WORST TEACHER EVER. you don't even have to go to class and you can pass if you teach yourself. homework is so hard, he doesn't explain. just reads power points. do not take him for Chem 100.
Worst professor I've ever had, he does not care about his students and if you try and seek help he looks down upon you as if you are stupid. All he does is read off the slides.
BEWARE!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN FOR NOTHING. HE WAS THE WORST TEACHER I'VE HAD SINCE BEING AT SOUTH! HE'S VERRRYY RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL DOESN'T SHOW ANY INTEREST IN HELPING THE STUDENTS. HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW THE MATERIAL ALREADY! AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS! YOU WILL REGRET TAKING HIM. HE LIKES TO BELITTLE PPL WHEN THEY ASK A QUESTION! STAY AWAY
Dr. Perine... Where to begin? Not only did he read directly from the slides every class, He would talk down to students in a very rude manner. I am highly disappointed with Dr. Perines class... My advice to anyone interested in his chemistry course is to find another professor if you care about your grades....
Do not and I repeat, do not take Dr. Perine's class. He is not helpful nor does he care about the student. Signed up for a different professor and the university changed the other for this one. I should have dropped it or waited for a different professor when I had the chance. Awful semester with him as a professor.
Find another teacher at all costs. All he does is talk down to you when you don't understand something, he reads the power points word from word and makes it pointless to come to class. You have to be prepared to teach yourself if you take him.
Great teacher. He expects effort from students. Reading the book first and then going to lecture is a must. I found him very helpful unlike many other reviews. People are wrong on him talking down to them. He tries to help and engage students to think. For me, I'd go out of my way to take this teacher.
Dr.P was the only teacher available when I registered for my Chem class and I wish he wasn't. He's rude to students & talks to them like they're idiots, he reads the power points WORD FOR WORD, and the tests hardly ever match the power points. You MUST be prepared to teach yourself. Going to class is pointless, and I wish I would've gotten a tutor.
Dr. Perine as a lab instructor is brilliant. I loved him:) He is funny.. and makes sure you do well in lab. Very helpful! Wish I could have taken him for Orgo chem lab 2 but he wasn't working this summer. I guess he's not a great lecture professor based on what everyone is saying but in lab he is GREAT! I recommend him for sure:)
extremely unhelpful and sometimes unprofessional. had two weeks of military orders and missed a test and he refused to let me make it up. he is the professor high school teachers talk about when they say college professors dont care. do not take him at any cost. it would be of better interest to go straight to chem 131.
Hands down the best Chemistry teacher I have had at South so far (Chem 100-201). Dr. Perine understands how to effectively teach the material and make great everyday examples connecting the two. If you want an actual educator and not just another boring PhD recipient, choose Dr. P!!
Class consisted of a lecture and a "lab lecture". Did not go to either and only showed up for test. He is very unhelpful and pretty much was a self taught class. Sapling homework and a test every other week which were simple to me. Finished with an A.
Dr. Perine is willing to help his students. He is funny and will tell some really great stories in class. He is a great Chemistry teacher and you should definitely take his class.
Professor Perine's teaching method for chemistry 100 is TERRIBLE. All he does is read off slides. That's it. He doesn't give quizzes but he gives tests and they are not all that easy. I would not recommend him, but considering that he is the only professor that teaches this course, you have no choice. Good luck!
Horrible teacher. All he does is read powerpoints all day everyday. Its impossible to ask questions in class because he talks down to the students and makes them feel stupid. NO REAL EXPLANATIONS. YOU MUST LEARN ON YOUR OWN TO PASS!
I don't fail classes ever, but I have met my match. Dr. P has to be the worst professor. I hate that I have to say that, but I only understood his class when I went to JagSuccess. I thoroughly enjoyed learning CH, but Dr. P made it miserable at times. He reads the powerpoints WORD for WORD. He is the only person who teaches CH 100, go to CH 131!!!!
He does not clarify anything, he is rude and does not want to help, I had to teach myself Chemistry. I took honors chemistry in high school and I passed with an A. I advise going to Jag Success! I highly recommend Jag SuccessTutor. Class is not Mandatory! Be prepared to pay 36.00 for Sapling Homework which is a required homework site!
Dr. P is very funny and does a good job at relating Chemistry to every day life with real world examples. His tests are very tough and attendance is not mandatory. When students asks questions he makes them feel stupid. So don't ask questions in class if you get embarrassed easy
He clarifies subjects pretty well by relating them to real life problems all the time, but I feel his tests don't depict how well one would know the subject, being that there's only 4 tests and can sometimes feel like something is being left out. There is also a lot of homework, but whether that's good or bad is up to the student's study skills.
Dr. Perine is extremely degrading, especially when it comes to answering students' questions about his class material. Plus the slideshow he uses to teach is outdated.
Chemistry is hard. Dr. P knows its hard. That's why he tries to help you any way he can. Just don't expect him to honey pet you or give you something for nothing. He has to see you participate. Show up to class, participate, and have a good attitude. He knows the ones that participate and it will pay off at the end of the semester. Just do the work
Dr. Perine knows what he's talking about and does a good job explaining it. His class is very tough.. you have to read the whole chapter, do all practice problems, homework, and study all power points to pass the tests. He comes across rude when students ask questions, but you can't take it personal. You have to be dedicated to pass the class.
Dr. Perine reads directly from the slides each and every class and so you don't really have to waste your time in going. His tests are quite difficult and you need to read and read and read to pass them. In my opinion, he is just the average professor.
Horrible, horrible, horrible! I am an A student and got a C in Organic 202 and not because I did not understand the material. He gives ridiculous tests and asks the most obscure questions. Out of a class of 25, maybe 2 or 3 walked out with higher than a C. Good luck if you take him!
Unlike a lot of the reviews on here, Dr. Perine doesn't make me feel stupid. He definitely wants you to feel confident in your answer when he asks a question. He reads from directly from the powerpoint and will give a little more explanation. When you ask a question just make sure that you think about the question first.
Not helpful at all. When students asked him a question his reply was always "you should already know that". Absolutely no help at all. Test were nothing like lectures so read the book. Worse class I ever took. So bad I changed my major as I though chemistry was too tough. No need to go to class, just read book & online lecture. TEACH YOURSELF
Not helpful especially to students that are struggling. Does not take roll. He is not interested in helping people succeed in his class. I wish i would've taken another teacher. He does not take roll so we can not even get participation points.
Very bad Professor!! If you have to take chem 100 get ready to teach yourself because he's no help at all! He reads straight from OLD powerpoints, does not take roll, and no quizzes. just online homework. No extra credit, he doesn't care.
I am an A student , and I plan on going to med school, but this instructor was the most difficult professor I have taken in my 3 years of college. He reads off of his slides, and gives tests on material that he did not even cover. Basically had to teach myself, and I still passed with a C. If you value your GPA choose a different instructor.
I had Dr. P for both CH 201 and CH 202. IF YOU ARE IN THE SLIGHTEST NOT GOOD AT CHEMISTRY OR DO NOT LIKE IT DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! I am an A student and also have very good work ethic and study skills. He reads directly off his power points and the exams are nothing like his lectures. I got C's in both 201 and 202 by working by butt off.
He reads straight from the slides that he puts online so you don't really have to go to class. Tests are really hard and a lot of the materials on tests are things you haven't gone over. Try to find another teacher.
He reads straight from the PowerPoint, there's no point in going. His tests are filled with trick questions and he really doesn't care about you or how you do. You're going to have to teach yourself. There's no extra credit. Would NEVER take again.
Terrible. Lectures are irrelevant. Homework is a waste. Nothing he teaches will help you on a test. He also gives extra credit but don't bother doing it. He will not count it. He brings other teachers in to tape you so he can catch people cheating which is distracting. The university should get rid of him as soon as possible.
He uses PowerPoint presentations and will skip quite a few slides from the chapter, tell you that you don't need to know it, and then you will be tested on it. you will have to teach yourself everything from the book. The homework is really just busy work and a waste, but you have to do it for the points. Take someone else or wait a semester!
Dr. P is not as horrible as the comments make him out to be. He is better than Forbes you just have to pick your poison. He is willing to help his students and if you go to class and try your hardest he will notice that. He is hilarious and makes lectures more interesting. I am taking him again for CH202 & CH202L. His labs are super easy to pass.
He lectures verbatim from slides he didnt create and doesnt really teach. Don't even thunk about passing his test no matter how hard you study the slides, homework, practice problems and read the chapter its not enough. He says studyevery thing literally for the test. From a studdnt woth a 3.2 GPA i advise you dont be fooled into taking his class.
There is no organization for test. He expects you to review the slides, homework, practice problems and read the chapter and pass a test without knowing what material from four sources to focus on. Surprised the university dies question why his class testing averages are always so low. I was on the Dean's List every semster until Dr. P class.
Dr. P is a good teacher. He lectures straight from the slides but he does post all of his slides and a practice exam for each chapter on Sakai. Don't take this course if you aren't willing to put in work outside of class. 1 homework online for each chapter, no quizzes, tests take A LOT of studying. Just show up to class and do your part.
DONT TAKE HIM!! He lectures from the PowerPoint slides strictly and expect so you to review everything else on your own without question. When you ask questions he makes me you feel extremely idiotic and had the whole class laugh at you. He puts things on the exam even when he says he doesn't. You WILL fail this class if you don't teach yourself!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ALL. ALL HE DOES IS READ THE SLIDES ( which we already have) SO GOING TO CLASS IS POINTLESS CAUSE YOU CAN READ THE SLIDEW YOURSELF. DONT ASK HIM TO REPEAT HIMSELF. WILL EMBARRASS YOU IF GET A ANSWER WRONG IN CLASS. TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
In the beginning of this course, I had high hopes until he told me that there would be no labs, only lectures. Then, he would only read by slides, which is no help at all. He had no clear test dates, and to even get an A in the class, you will have to spend 30-something dollars for a program. Will embarrass students for asking questions.
I have no clue why Dr P has such a low rating. Yes, he is tough. Dr P is very passionate about chemistry and he will let the class know that. He does tend to ramble about attendance, but he only does this bc he cares. He wants you to pass. My suggestion is to attend class, read the book, do the homework! Put in a lil extra time and you will pass!
Do not take Dr. P. He pretends the class will be easy if you study, practice, read the chapter and come to class. Get ready to teach yourself. He reads from slides that come from another institution that he did not create. He will not allow make up test only because he will have to create a test instead of using the standardized test that he found
Dr. P does want you to do well, but he isn't going to go out of his way to give you anything you don't earn. If you study really hard, you can make an A definitely. I wouldn't recommend taking with other difficult courses, unless you're sure you can handle the load. I took with two other heavy sciences and it destroyed me. Learn from my mistakes.
He's great for lab. If you show up and do the work you wont have any issue in lab. He's better than some professors for lab. I'd recommend him for lab.
Dr. Perine is a great teacher. Of course, organic 2 will not be an easy course so you have to put in effort but he will help you if you ask him. His test are multiple choice and are not very hard and all of his sapling is on chegg. Would recommend taking Dr. P! Also he does not offer any extra credit but you get a drop test and he scales the ACS.
Unnecessarily hard course. Even if you manage to guess the right answer on the test you will not get credit unless you show work. Good luck on that. Because he is your only option for this course, you need to invest in a great tutor. Changed my major just so I wouldn't have to see him again. Yes! He is that bad.
Dr. P really cares about his students. Lectures aren't mandatory, but he provides great explanations for everything and it has helped tremendously. The class is test heavy, but if you do the practice questions in the book you can get an A or a B & homework is easy. Tests are 50 questions multiple choice which is awesome. Taking him for 202!
DR. PERINE IS THE WORST!! He only reads from the slides and teachers absolutely nothing. Don't ask questions in class because he will embarrass you in front of everyone. You have to pay for the homework which does count as a test grade, but the actual in class tests are IMPOSSIBLE to pass. He teaches the class as you should already know chemistry.
Dr. P is worst. The only grades you have are 7 tests including the final and online homework. He just reads off the powerpoints and doesn't explain how he got an answers and the powerpoints are from a different college. This class is an intro chem course and is a lot harder than it needs to be. Get ready to teach yourself and find a study group.
Dr. P Started off cool then became very disrespectful when students asked questions, or answered wrong, and made fun of them. He reads off a power point taken from somewhere else, so it's not effective. Showing up can allow you to hear side notes not on the slides that help, but not usually. He is extremely rude and you pretty much teach yourself
Horrible. Uses slides and homework from third party. Embarrasses students for asking questions, very miserable man. Either has horrible home life or dislikes his job. Acts as if he is above teaching intro chem. Don't take him!!! You will regret it!
honestly, he's tough!! you dont have to go to class, but its hard to believe you'll pass if you dont. reading is a must for a good grade. BUTTTTT, he cares!!if you care, he CARES!!! he will work with you to make sure you got it. he rounds up for those who try & you get a drop grade
Dr. Perine was an awful professor. You had to of almost been a genius to pass his test. His lectures were not helpful. In fact, he didn't answer questions effectively. I don't think he cared whether you passed or failed. The only thing that saved my grade was the sapling homework. Do not take professor Perine if you care about your grades.
DONT DO IT. I PROMISE YOULL REGRET IT. JUST WAIT UNTIL YOUVE TAKEN MA 112 & TAKE 131. Trust me on this...
Donald Perine is possibly the worst professor Ive ever taken. Recieved the highest grade in his class only to not have it scaled anyways. He claims the tests only cover info related to the unit he covers but he throws stuff from his lab and topics from future chapters in it too. I would only take Perine if him and Forbes were my only option. Avoid
This professor doesnt like to be wrong. He doesnt go in depth enough when it comes to the material. During lecture, when asked a question and you give wrong answer he acts as if the world is over instead of explaining why the answer was wrong.
i didnt take chemistry in high school b/c I was not an AP student (did some honor classes). Im a recent graduate from south & Im doing a second bachelors. Needed this class to learn the basics before CH131. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you must, try to audit or take it but drop it before it effect your gpa (Ask to still attend to hear the lecture)
The only grades that come from the class are 7 test & he rushes through the PowerPoint so fast. You can ask questions but he belittles you when you dont ask them in a certain way. The class starte with 15 students & now theres only 6 people attending. Its a shame the university doesnt care! I agree with the rater below!! Try to audit or drop
Extremely hard course. Test are all open response. Its a must that you study this course everyday. Tests are hard also but be sure to attend office hours. Hes nice and always there to help.
I feel Dr. Perine is a great lecturer because he explains concepts well with relatable examples. However, he tests on materials that he does not cover during lecture. He just expects you to know it even though he himself has said that he did not learn organic until he started teaching it. If you can help it, avoid him.
Dr. Perine gives great lectures that explain concepts really well. He is a really funny guy, but very rude when asked questions about the material. The only grades he will give are the tests. They are free response and you better give a lot of detail if you want full credit. I finished with an 80 in lecture.
He's paranoid about cheaters in his class. I was in the class where he stationed another professor in the closet to record everyone during an exam and distract everyone during it when he came out. On the first day, he says that he cheated to get his degree with his entire class, but you just have to know how to do it right.
He's the toughest professor I have ever taken. He is insane, giving a 50 open-answer questions exams in a 50 minutes period CLASS!!! I am currently retaking the class in summer and making an A. He's not your professor. Avoid him.
I took Perine for both organic 1 and 2, and I made an A in both. So it is completely possible to do well in his class, but you have to work for it. He does not baby or hold your hand. I would have to come home and study for hours to make sure I knew the concepts, but his test are very straightforward. He is helpful if you are unsure of a concept.
Only has free response questions on tests and is EXTREMELY picky about what he'll accept. All lectures were powerpoints made available to us online, so you really don't need to go to class. He gets easily distracted during lectures, and you really just need to teach yourself, but is still better than Forbes. I don't recommend taking o-chem at south
Dr. P has a very interesting way of teaching. We were told at the beginning of class that only 20% of will pass. During lecture you will say to yourself : "Oh yea that makes sense" and even read the book and do the practice problems and feel so comfortable just to realize the test is nothing like what you studied. If there is another option DO IT!
Demeaning when you ask questions. Creates a hostile learning environment. Youll understand concepts if you read and go to lecture, but his test are exponentially harder than any practice problems youll encounter in the book. Gives open ended questions on tests and is very picky about what hell accept. Most apathetic professor Ive taken.
I actually enjoyed Dr. Perine's lab. He does intimidate and will demean you if you don't follow his exact instructions. However, he made jokes through the lab and he helps if you have any problems. I never had a problem with him and made high grades on all of my lab reports. Read before class, take time doing your lab reports, and ask questions.
I only met with him 2/4 times we are supposed to meet in person. Most of the work was done online. I emailed him with a question and his response to me was to Google it he didnt grade very strictly but he wasnt any help either. I feel like he taught me nothing. I wouldnt take him again because I thought he was rude and didnt want to teach
He has a way of making the material interesting, but when you ask questions he wants specific answers. Test heavy but this is my second time taking organic and I wish I took him the first time.
If you value learning something in a lab setting, do not take this man. His labs are fairly easy compared to other professors, but he is extremely rude. He seems like one of those people extremely high on a pedestal because he has a doctorate. I made an A, but actually learned stuff from the professor Perine rips off all of his material from.
Despite what I initially heard about Dr. P, he's an extremely intelligent man and excellent lab professor. Most people say he doesn't care, but I think this is contrary to reality. Dr. P always helped me when I needed it and could break down complex problems so that literally anyone could understand them.
Skips through material that he thinks we "should have known" even if we were never taught it. Practicum is almost impossible due to lack of information given. Very unclear and gives little to no feedback. Long lab reports. Unprofessional/somewhat rude; talks down on students for not understanding/asking questions. Take someone else if you can.
Don Perine is an awful teacher! He is very rude to students. He intimidates students just because they don't understand a certain material. I don't recommend taking him unless you want to deal with his smart mouth 24/7 and rude comments.
Dr. Perine has an amazing personality, that at first made me excited to be in his class. As time went on, it turns out that he is extremely rude. He makes you feel incompetent at times, as well as he only reads power points and expects the class to be able to take a "fill in the blank" only test.
Honestly, do not take him if you don't have to. One of the worse professors I've ever had. Don't even think about asking questions in class because it will only lead to him degrading you. Luckily, I didn't have him for lab.
I took him over the summer, and while he is funny, he did not plan his lectures accordingly. He planned an exam the day before the final. Literal bane of my existence I was so irritated.
Arrogant, rude, condescending. Tenured so doesn't care. Reads slides word for word. Talks to students as if he is doing a favor by teaching a course you paid for. Be sure to pick up your exams, will "accidentally" mark answers wrong if you don't constantly stoke his ego. If you do, will give you partial credit. Not a teacher, merely an exam proctor
An outstanding lab professor. He may seem strict, but only when students offer excuses rather than accept responsibility. His grading is generous and his humor keeps the atmosphere light. He expects thoughtful questions, yet if you invest effort and show genuine interest in the lab, he will go above and beyond to support you.
Take Dr. Perine's lab. Super chill once you understand his grading—100s are very doable. He genuinely cares, quizzes are fair, and his prelab talks explain the material better than lecture. Funny in his own way, and best lab prof, no stress if you stay on top of things.
Very rude and condescending. Shouldn't treat his adult students like children who should bow down to him. God forbid you ask him a question and he won't start trying to embarrass you in front of everyone then raise his voice over a simple question. We are adults, why are you trying to yell at your students??
Dr. Perine can be intimidating at first but he is a good lab professor. Also, he repeats everything at least 3 times so be prepared to stay the entire lab time. He was my last pick but I'm fairly happy I took him
If you mess up on ANYTHING during lab he will berate you for ten minutes. He has no respect for his students and loves to argue but then won't let you respond. Good luck if he's ur only choice!
A little intimidating, but if you listen to him he's actually nice. He tells you exactly what to do, and how to get good grades on your pre and post labs. If you spend at least 40 minutes on each and follow his instructions, you can make an A. He does lecture a lot before lab so unless you do the experiment fast you'll be there at least two hours.
Dr. Perine is not as bad as these ratings make him out to be. I did not find his grading to be difficult. As long as you followed the guideline he gives you from the first day of lab, you will be fine. He over explains all the labs before you do them as well, so I never watched any of the pre lab videos.
