Professor Smith is an excellent teacher!He likes to engage his class and does it with such enthusiasm.He does expect you to come to class and be prepared.Participate in his class.He's fair but expects you to work your best. Your interest in history will certainly grow!I recommend Professor Smith if you want to do well and enjoy History!

This was a great class. Prof. Smith was funny and really new this subject. Didn't always agree with his political views but his thoughts were very compelling. He made history really feel like a story and not just a bunch of facts! He was wonderful and funny! Do your reading, participate in class and you will learn and get an A for sure!

Professor Smith is one of the best professors I have ever had. I learned more about history in his class. Attendence is very important. He gives study outlines. He likes you to work in study groups which I found great. You can always get help from him. He expects you to work and particpate and you will be sure to get an A. Do study for his test.

Very knowledgeable professor, who loves what he does!! The more you read the better you will do, but he will provide a study guide before the tests to let you know exactly what to expect. The more you write, the better you will do on tests. In all, he is a very good professor and an all around nice guy!

AMAZING teacher. He travels from PA every day just to teach @ nvcc. He loves history. He loves his students. Go to EVERY class, take notes....that EXACTLY what the tests come from. DEF go to review day:he'll tell you the EXACT test questions. Very simple: go to class + notes=A. He loves his students & is the best teacher I've ever had, by far!!!!

Professor Smith is one of the best professors I have ever had. His enthusiasm for history is amazing! I thought history was interesting but he actually made me excited about learning it! You have to participate! He engages his students more then any professor I've seen or experienced! He helped me socially too! I made friends with my study group!

This class is pretty easy if you take good notes-come to every class especially the reviews where he gives you a sheet that contains question of which 70% or more will appear on the test. I really don't understand why he travels such a distance to teach almost like he wants you to pity him. He could be more helpful to individuals but he isn't.

He is a Fantastic teacher who enjoys his work very much. He is very clear and loves history and it shows. If you join a study group you can ACE the class with no problem. He loves his students and teaching. I think that is why he travels from PA to teach here in Virginia. He is very helpful and welcomes questions even after classes one on one.

HE is a GREAT I MEAN GREAT professor he expalins everything soo clear and makes sure everyone understands.His test are given in the little blue books you have multiple choice and then you get to choice anyone you want for the essay questions. he is very helpful his study guides are great! they are seriously the exact thing on the test!

By far one of the best teachers I've ever had. This class was not easy for me because before I took it, I had no interest in history. I ended up learned a lot from his class; and by the end of it loved history. I highly recommend him!!!

He has a tendency to go off on tangents, but he drives from PA to VA every day to teach at NVCC, so he is very easily pardoned. He knows and likes history, you can tell. Some in my class did not like his style of teaching, but I did. I loved the style of exams too. He's an old teddy bear that has a humor button. TAKE THIS CLASS! But do the work

I am not a night person and I can't sit still for more than a half hour at a time but the way that Mr. Smith described history kept me engrossed and wondering what would come next.

So Mr. Smith is pretty much awesome. He knows what he's doing, won't overload you, will do virtually anything to help you, and sure as hell keeps things interesting! Things to look forward to: dumb blonde jokes, random stories, infinite movie critiques. Things to dread: endless Republican rants. However, overall, I would HIGHLY recommend him!!

His deep knowledge on history & his hilarious jokes keep me entertained during class & I actually learned. If you take good notes during the class discussions and actually pay attention to what he says, you will do fine in the class.

really nice/understanding professor. take lots of notes. know EVERYTHING on his study guides for the tests the more detailed the better. be sure to participate cuz it equals to a whole test.

You will learn a lot from his class, but be prepared because his tests are all essay tests and are worth around 240 points each. You have to memorize a LOT of information. He gets carried away when it comes to politics which is sometimes frustrating, and he also tends to offend people a lot which I don't like.

Teaches with passion (drives from PA every morning) made subject so interesting I sometimes didn't want to leave class. Gives study guides but plays games on tests. Also, I've noticed that he sometimes preaches, picks and chooses parts of history that he agrees with and skips through what he doesn't like. Other than that, AWESOME professor!

THE BEST PROFESSOR AT NORTHERN VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES. I took Kinsella for 101 and I enjoyed Kinsella alot, but professor Smith is on a totally different level. I was in a three hour lecture and would keep my attention throughout the ENTIRE LECTURE. You have to study and read the book, but he makes learning truthfully a great process.

His class is fun but tests are really hard! you have to memorize everything and participate everyday.

You'd better study in this class and do what he ask you to you. sure 4/18 students past, but a lot of student in our class got A as well. That's not a easy class, but if you do the work, you will get paid back.

Good teacher, explains everything in a story-like way so it's easier and funner to understand. His tests are tough though. Barely any multiple choice and a LOOOT of essay. He's very specific about what he wants and each test is out of 200 points. Attendence & participation are important.

He is the BEST and EASIEST professor I have had in NVCC. He gives students complete study sheets and tests all comes from the review sheets. He is very funny and his lectures are very interesting (describes vivid images & makes funny sound). I got 1134 points(900 for A)in his class though I only took three tests-4th average. I HIGHLY recommend him.

Excellent teacher. Very lively and animated. Definitely makes class interesting. Tests are easy if and only if you study. He is very clear about what will be on the test and gives out study guides for everyone to follow. I am taking him again for 102 in the Fall.

Western Civilization I. No space to goof off or not pay attention in his class. To do well, you gotta do the assigned reading and notes before class and modify them in class as he talks about them. Tests: multiple choice & essay. But, he shows you exactly what to study. He cares about the class material shows relevance. Interesting class.

YOu have to earn your grade in the class. You have to do the reading and memorize what you need to. He gives you the answers to the study guide so study them. Answer his test questions in detail--that means everything on that subject. I took this as a six week course and this is all I had time in my life for.

Yes, he is a STRONG republican BUT that has nothing to do with his teaching. He presents hist as a story which is very helpful in remembering events. He does make you memorize detailed information, but he gives you all the information and tools(VERY DETAILED study guides)you need to succeed in his class. Make sure you participate and come to class!

Pretty much what everyone else has said here - pay attention in class, take notes, get into a study group and write as much as you know in tests - even if you get one question wrong, he'll give you extra points for another question if you wrote a lot and you could still end up getting 100% or more overall!! Make sure you keep up on the reading, and write down everything he outlines as "important questions." He tells you everything that's going to be on the exam, and exactly the way he wants you to answer it. Just follow that, and you're good as gold. It does require time and work,but its worth it. His grading scale allows many extra credit points too!

Got an A in his class, but i wouldn't take him again. I found myself to be memorizing the notes and writing them verbatim on the test to get a good grade..not my style of learning..that's all.

Take this professor. The recipe for success in his class is the basics for every college course u will ever take: do the reading hw, use the reading guide he provides, takes notes in class, and ask questions/participate. Mr. Smith is a great teacher who is passionate about history and has a genuine interest in his students. Be prepared to take notes, read, and participate. Prof Smith was very knowledgeable regarding this subject. He may be somewhat opinionated, but he encourages critical thinking. While his class is not easy, he does explain exactly what is required to do well and there are lots of opportunities for extra points. Most importantly he keeps the class interesting and relevant.

Great teacher, very simple material. All you have to do is write down the important questions (which he makes glaringly obvious) and study for the tests. The tests are simple but he expects you to put down a lot of info for answers, not hard but requires effort the day before tests.

One of the funniest teachers i've had very energetic and enthuthiastic about the material. I didnt do good on my first test but once I figured out to study just the important questions of the study guide (that sometimes he gives you answers to) I ended up getting As on the rest of the tests.

Smith is a great teacher. He presents the material in a very entertaining way and tells you EXACTLY what is on the test. Pay particular attention to what he writes on the board. SIDE NOTE: His politcal views are far to the right and he has no problem expressing his politial opinions. I am very LEFT, but still appreciated his teaching skills.

Very good teacher. Teaches very clearly and concisely. He is also very understanding with any problems and helps you out with everything. He also ties history in with current events. Tells you exactly what is on the tests. His teaching method is unique, but once you adjust it is smooth sailing. Very highly recommended for history classes.

Very smart, but extremely opinionated. Very conservative. He's a nice guy, but I think he just didn't like me. I would study for hours every night for his test and still failed. It's as if he expects you to remember his entire study guide that he gives out. I have never failed a class but I think this will be my first.

All in all, great professor. The tests are not easy: They require lots of information, but any extra gets you EC. For helpfulness, before the tests, you may send him your notes and he corrects/fills in anything missing. Great clarity, with few sidetracks. Overall, he knows the subject very well, and gives you everything that will be on the test.

He was the worst grader ever. You literally had to memorize everything in the book and the answers that he gave you. You had to like, marry the book in order for you to get good grades in the tests he gave you. Omits the final if you pass with "A." Grades extra if you participate actively everyday in the class, so it could boost your grade.

Be careful with this one...i took the 8 week session and he moves through 3-4 chapters every week and a half. Then you are given a timed test that is mainly all short answer. There are very specific points he wants cover and you won't recieve full credit if you forget to include something. Read and study everyday. Do not try to CRAM for this class!

Mr. Smith is one of the BEST teachers at NOVA. Not only his lectures are interesting, but his study guide is very helpful. If it's not in the SG-it won't be on the test. Besides he gives you all the answers anyways. All you need to do is learn it. Also participation is a MUST, at lest 1/class. Plus if you have good grades he lets you skip a final.

My favorite professor this semester, 4 test including final and a participation grade which weights in as much as a test. Even if you do bad on his 1st test there is always room for redemption. Memorize his studyguide and what he writes down.

Very smart and knowledgable of the subject. That being said, goes off topic a lot. Very vocal on conspiracy theories and very anti-Obama and government in general. A lot of reading. Only grades come from participation and tests. Perfect class if you're an economics major bc he talks a lot of about economics to the point of annoyance.

Excellent professor, challenges you to think for yourself. Wants you to let your ideas be heard, but he expects you to back them up, like in a job. You will have to work hard for your grade in his class. He does disagree with the textbook often. I give him and his class credit for teaching me how to study. He's not a bad guy, but he's not going to baby you.

If you pay attention,take notes and follow the professor's instructions you are granted to at least pass. The teacher is very knowledgeable, he puts a lot of effort in making sure you understand the concepts and gives you a study guide so you don't have to read the whole damn thing. It is not easy but it is worth it. Enroll if you want to learn.

I love this professor for his enthusiastic and sense of humor. He teaches you history by telling stories and giving a lot of examples so that you can remember things easily. While his tests consist of both written and multiple choices, they are all in given in the study guide. So, take him and you'll learn interesting stuffs!

Right off the bat I can tell you that Professor Smith is VERY straight forward as far as what is expected of his students. He gives 5 tests and no final. GIVES YOU THE QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ON THE TEST BEFORE CLASS. Mr. Smith is very knowledgeable, he throws in some wisdom and philosophical teachings that will better you in the future.

Awesome teacher, I loved his class. All you have to do is study the important questions and you'll be set to get an A. there is no final just 5 tests and if you do well in the first 4 tests the last one is optional. He's very passionate about his class which gets you interested. He's also not shy when it comes to his views.

Mr. Smith's class was one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken at NOVA. His lectures were intriguing and he requires class participation. Take a lot of notes and the tests are easy! I highly recommend taking his class.

Mr.Smith keeps the class very simple and organized(5 tests if you get four a's in the four exams final is optional) and he gives test questions a day before the exam and discuss the questions in class so its literally impossible to fail his class .But you have to put in work and participation is a must in his class.

Lecture style: interactive. Students read assigned textbook chapters for discussion in class. He provides study guide for what to look for while reading and expects participation in class. Homework: just reading the textbook, no papers to turn in. Tests: five, primarily essay questions with a few multiple choice. Questions discussed previous class.

Professor is extremely conservative. With that being said, he is passionate and clear in his lectures. Theres never dull moment. He condenses readings to most important info. You must work for your A, but if you put in the work, you WILL get an A. I can honestly say, although I don't always agree with him, he is one of the best Pr. I've had.

Overall, he was an excellent instructor. He practically gave you an A. All you have to do is show up to class, read what he tells you, and takes notes. He doesn't always agree with the book, so attending class and taking good notes is vital. He is also VERY conservative, but his beliefs are founded in logic. Very passionate and fun to listen to.

Text book reading required. Class participation isn't an option. Take good notes. Follow his instructions and you should have no problem getting an A. If not then be prepared for the consequences. Before each exam he gives a list of study questions that can guarantee that you will do well if you know the material. I learned a lot.

I was never a big fan of history, but i found this class very enjoyable. The tests were very straightforward. He gave us the questions beforehand and we discussed all the answers in class. He would look over our study guides and give us feedback so we can perfect it. You should honestly have no problem getting less than an A if you tried.

He is helpful and clear about the material, but pay attention to his lectures and read the chapters so you can participate. He literally tells you what is on the test and lets you send in a study guide that he will edit beforehand for you. He's a great teacher but you need to be willing to put in the effort (taking good notes, participating, etc).

Dr. Smith is one of the most entertaining humanities professors Ive ever had. Bursting with with popular culture references and animated gestures, he articulates the standard historical narrative presenting it for easy recall later on exams. The only reason why I did not do as well as I could have was I took too many classes that semester.

Excellent lecturer, very very smart and knows exactly what he's talking about. Expects a lot in terms of participation and keeping up with the readings, but if you do that, you're all set. Very passionate about teaching and making his students more aware of the world around them. Sometimes comes off a bit strong, but all in all a great professor.

the professor knows the material and he was comfortable with it. therefore accessible to students. I would recommend him to others the teacher is great, patient, and understands students.

I took history 101 class in person. Twice a week for 2015 Spring semester. We met Mondays and Wednesdays 2:00-3:15. The class was mostly lecture, although participation counts. Here is what you are graded on: participation and tests. There are 5 tests. If u do well u dont have to take the 5th test. He also gives u the test questions before tests.

You get out of it what you put in. His class is not surprisingly easy nor surprisingly difficult. Test are long and cover a lot of material but study guides are clear and all questions on the test are on the study guide. His extra credit on exams and participation will save your grade. Overall great professor with entertaining lectures.

Mr. Smith is a great professor. He truly cares about the well being of his students as well as their growth. That being said he certainly isn't easy. He uses the book as 60% of his class, the other 40% he gives you through lecture, i.e.. the book is the minimum, what he gives you is actual knowledge. Learned a lot, had fun, ended up top score.

GREAT Professor! Very good lectures that keep you interested. There is no homework, but he counts participation as a grade (Which is very easy to do if you actually read the chapters/know the answers to the questions.) The tests are a little difficult but again, as long as you read, pay attention, and try, you will pass easily! Amazing class!

He's very knowledgeable on the material. He gives extraordinary lectures with easy to understand examples. He stimulates critical thinking and he's always there for his students. Mr. Smith is an A+ professor indeed.

For a college level class, this was an extremely easy class. Granted, his tests are tough, but it is very easy to make up the missing point with participation and bonus points on the tests. Read the chapters. Participate in class. Record/ write down everything he says. Study. Take the tests. Easy A. No essays or projects!

Took him for fall and he's a great professor who is very knowledgeable on the subject. Tests were a bit hard but all the materials are available. Just study the guideline he gives you and you're pretty much set

Prof. Smith is the generous professor. He provides the studyguide notes to students. Test are tough!! You will need to work hard and put lots of effort to get an A but no H/W & Paper W. Participation matters because he will grade it. I really enjoyed his class, his lecture was fun and I learned a lot. He tried best he can do to help the students.

One of the best professor here at NOVA. He loves his students, and gives them free time to brainstorm. By the end of the semester, one will be able to identify all of his inlaws and his friends at the energy department.

For CST110 he was AMAZING! a complete easy A and gem! He had 3 assignments which were small and easy. He just wants people to turn something in and atleast TRY. The whole class is just him talking about stories and life lessons and his life. super funny. never graded anything but gave the whole class As at the end. TAKE HIM YOU'LL GET AN A!!!!

Really sweet guy. Super passionate about the subject & really wants the best for his students. I made the mistake of taking the 2.5 hour class. He makes it as interesting as he can but its 2.5 hours of communications. REALLY EASY. Barely any grades, he only grades on participation. Lets you leave early. Rarely have hw & when we do it's so easy

Professor Smith is a super nice guy, and as long as you speak at some point in the semester he gives you an A. Can't say I learned a ton (why he didn't get a 5), but he's definitely experienced in Communications and cares a lot about his students. For most of lecture he tells stories, so all you have to do is show up and listen.

Mr. Smith is the best professor. He has such a kind soul and genuinely cares about his students. He's a easy grader and just wants you to participate. There's only about six assignments and I missed like two and still passed the class with a 100. You won't regret taking him!

I really enjoyed Professor Smith's class. I felt bad because, since it was over Zoom, there was not much participation from the class. Some classes got kind of awkward because Smith was trying to communicate with everyone but nobody was really responding. Overall a great class, but would recommend taking it in person to get the full benefit.

Professor Smith is very well respected, caring, and understanding teacher. I took this course through zoom, participation does matter though, and attendance is mandatory.
