The material for this class is interesting but they expect you to learn WAY too much information, and then the tests are ridiculous because they are so specific on what they want. I worked my ass off in this class and still got a C. I don't recommend it.
His tests are pick 3 questions out of 5, and so on. Very specific, but at least you get to answer the ones you know. Study guides are key. You have to be proactive about studying. Overall, fun class.
a little unorganized, but the movies shown in class are interesting!
A very knowledgeable professor. Can be a little unclear at times because of the amount of material covered, but the TA's definitely help with it. He likes finding info on wikipedia, so use as a resource. Know the answers to study questions (answers are usually within notes). If you put in the work then you should come out with a good grade.
Goes off on odd tangents and doesn't always make sense. but he gives study questions that are the exact same questions on the tests. He records his lectures on podcasts and has his lect slides on line. class is borning, but preatty easy. (weekly home work is graded easy)
pretty boring. 90% of his lecture is off the powerpoint -- if you're literate, you proabaly won't have to go to class much. he goes off on tangents quite a bit, and he's a bit of a tree hugger (i've got nothing against that, but after a whole quarter it gets grating..) if you're into ecology, go for it, if you just need a GE/breath, look elsewhere.
This class is the most interesting that I have had in college. The professor goes out of his way to use examples that are in the real world. His tests are hard. If you attend class and study hard, you can get a good grade.
This class is interesting, hard, and one that you can get a decent grade in if you study. The material is not like any class that I have ever had. He uses human examples and we studied things that will make a difference in our lives, like global warming, food and agriculture, energy, and population.
This is a hard class. It has math, chemistry, physics and lots of ecology. The professor is the best that I have ever had. The topics are very interesting and diverse. I worked hard and got a B+. The prof turned me on to lots of things that I didnt know, like human effects on the ecology. If you want to learn something in college, take this course.
Interesting, enthusiastic teacher, but lectures confusing at times. Uses figures that are difficult to understand. Most of reading unecessary. Study questions very open-ended and I didn't know what he was looking for. Tests pulled exactly from study questions with choices for which u answer. Homework takes too much time for how much it is worth.
He's boring during class, but just study his powerpoint lectures, and he gives out exam problems as study guide, so you do the study questions, memorise answers, and you will be ok, oh by the way, he also gives out homeworks, one homework per week.
easy first midterm, good curve, pay attention in lecture, Dr. Strong rocks
he is random and confusing, talks about his wife way tooo much. he is a very cute old man and cares alot about his students, he just doesn't really know how to teach.
Brilliant lectures intertwined the social science of population with its ecological implications. As noted by a previous reviewer, 2B is ecology and evolution, which explains the lectures on interconnectivity of life. Teaching ecology demands a more vague and nuanced style, which Dr. Strong provides very well.
Dr. Strong is okay. His lectures are confusing sometimes because he puts a lot of graphs on his slides. His tests are kind of hard.
Gets information wrong and gets angry when you correct him until he sees that, like usual, that he is wrong. Avoids answering questions. Like the rest of the bad BIS002 series, you don't have to learn anything, you just have to learn how he thinks to do well on his tests, which is BS. Talks like he is telling the most interesting story, so annoying
do not take this class with dr. strong! he's irritable and cranky, and his tests are really unfair. for lectures all he does is show graphs and pictures. btw, don't share clickers. he reported at least 100 kids to SJA for sharing clickers. he's crazy, avoid him if you can.
One of the most irritating teachers I've ever had. He's really excited about the subject, but VERY unclear. The book was expensive and he NEVER really used it. His lectures are long and drawn out, but random and useless. Tests are very ambiguous and going to office hours is useless. I DO NOT recommend this teacher to anyone!
This guy is what you come to college for. He really knows what he is talking about. He takes the material on ecology into areas that you wouldn't expect. What was most interesting to me was how we learned abuot humans being part of nature. Before this class I thought that global warming was hype, now I know that its real and is caused by humasn
Strong is a completely useless lecturer. It takes him 30 minutes to explain a very simple topic because he is constantly distracted and ranting about how humans are negatively impacting the planet. Only material on test is from practice questions, do those and you don't even need to pay attention in class. Other than to do clicker questions.
Average professor. Lectures are unclear and contain very specific information and data that you need to memorize for the exams. Always goes off topic during class. Give student's study questions but no answers. Exams are a bit too specific and based on memory and less on concepts. Does not stimulate interest in subject. Overall survivable class.
His lectures are pretty straightforward but as a lot of people have said here, he goes off topic a lot about social science. He did teach us some interesting things about ecology though. His questions on tests are very easy as in most of the time its "all of the above." Take him if you want a good grade.
Donald Strong is a really good professor. He is a good lecturer, and is interesting to listen to. He made me love biology and understand concepts that took me years to understand in high school. He has a lot of experience teaching and is serious about what he teaches. The structure of this class is a lot better than bis2a, hands down.
Dr. Strong is an overall competent professor. Sometimes the material can be a bit dry but he adds his cute sense of humor now and then, which makes lecture enjoyable. Test questions come straight off the study guides he provides. Just study the lecture slides and go over those study guides and you'll be fine!
Professor Strong is a good, sweet and funny person. Unfortunately his lecture material is very boring so paying attention is hard and he has a tendency to go on and on and on. However do and memorize the study questions and study his slides and you'll do fine!
Lectures are boring but he tries to make them interesting with his side stories. Sometimes goes off on a tangent but usually stays on course. His tests are pretty straightforward of you do the study guides and practice midterms. Overall I would recommend him.
Lectures are extremely boring, but the test is exactly from the lectures so pay attention. Absolutely no reason to buy the book or get the access code. Nothing on the test is from the book and the only benefit of getting them is you can get UP TO 12-13 bonus points for doing some online quizzes.
Lectures are boring, but they're only 50 minutes so you should go. Tone similar to grandfather telling his grandkids a bedtime story, not a professor lecturing in a university. Go to lecture, review your notes regularly, do the study questions, and you'll be just fine. Book isn't even really worth buying, unless you're going to do the PrepU.
He's adorable and tries to be funny but unfortunately his lectures are extremely dull. Didn't really pay attention half of the time. Exams were extremely easy, test questions were taken straight from the study guide verbatim. Just go over the study guide and you'll do really well.
Very boring lectures. However, he's a very easy teacher and almost all of his test questions for his midterm as well as some of the final come from his study guides. DO THOSE! and read the book!
Very good professor.
I personally think Dr. Strong is a great professor. Class wasn't too difficult. He based his questions on the study guide so the whole class was really straightforward. I hope to have him as a professor again! The labs took a while, but we only had 6.
This is such an easy class. You will barely learn anything. His lectures can be mildly interesting. Basically a history class with some ecology. Study guides match exams. Worse midterm grade dropped. Have to use R in labs, but never tested on it. Easy A. He's a cool dude though. Go to his office and talk to him. The man's got stories.
Pros: Respectable, knowledgeable, and kind Professor Current topics Clear-cut expectations Provides R-codes (cut&paste) for labs Answers questions on Piazza promptly Clicker questions daily - graded Cons: Lectures can drag Lab papers 2-3 pages, single-spaced, due weekly (99% of class work)
Great professor
A nice guy but lectures are almost impossible to pay attention to since he rambles so much. Some of the homework gets dropped but don't bank on that since it's an opportunity to get a great grade. The exams are very similar to the discussion questions.
Professor Strong is great. It's inevitable that you'll fall asleep during his lectures twice a week. Although the subject was fairly interesting, the weekly papers were tough to stay on top of. My TA was a pretty fair grader but I know others had a tough time pleasing the other nitpicky TA.
Easy grader. His lectures are so boring though, but everything is super self explanatory! Lab reports are easy, Don provides you all the information in lab report guidelines and you basically need to reiterate that and then answer the questions he gives. It's just a bunch of busy work!
Horrible. Boring lectures along with ambiguous test questions.
bad lecturer
I personally had a several unpleasant experiences with Dr. Strong. I found him to be very condescending and rather rude towards students during office hours. The course was very lecture heavy with many ambiguous questions on exams with very specific answers. Overall I will not take again and I implore others to avoid.
Avoid TA Josephine Hubbard AT ALL COST!!! The total score for the whole class is 500. And if you score lower than 450, it's B. Lab score worths 150 points in total and it's all graded by the TA. Hubbard always grades unreasonable harsh and makes the average score of her section much lower than other sections. hurts much more than professor
Terrible. Disorganized lectures and extremely ambiguous exams. Refuses to see fault in grading even if only one student got the question correct. Tests on material not taught. Basically impossible to have a conversation with. Incredibly condescending towards students. Do not take his class if you want to remain sane.
I took BIS2B in spring 2019 and the free response part of the exams were unreasonablly strict when it comes to grading. You could lose all points in a question by having a minor error. NEVER imagine yourself receiving high scores on exams if you are not someone who is good at taking exams even if you could rock those practice exams.
This man is the most boring professor I have ever encountered. He's super into ecology and history and it's really hard to focus because he talks so slowly. He also likes to go off on tangents about things that are irrelevant to the class. Do not recommend. Much better biology teachers out there.
To be honest, Professor Strong 's lecture is boring and the test that he gave us was super ambiguous. I do not recommend. :(
Strong's lectures are a bit dry and text-heavy at times, but he's truly passionate about what he teaches and it shows. My main complaint is that both his tests and lectures slides are poorly/vaguely worded. Even if you study, you probably will be caught off guard by a good handful of his short answer questions.
If you're so unlucky that you get into TA Josephine Hubbard section, make sure you change it or drop it
His lectures and slides are boring and very disorganized. The practice test questions and post-lecture review questions are very vague and almost unusable, and the tests are the same way. Bless his heart, he's adorable and very enthusiastic but I don't care for him as a professor.
Where to start... Strong is one of the most boring, uninspiring professors I've ever had. He just reads off his powerpoint slides but at x0.5 speed. He also asks lots of clicker questions BUT DOESN'T GIVE THE ANSWERS WHEN THE CLASS IS CONFUSED. Refuses to release answers for study questions and midterm questions are vague. Awful
Lectures are uninteresting and disorganized-- he spends too much time on one slide or not enough. He is passionate about ecology and the environment, though, which makes it bearable. I think he improved with time, but he doesn't post the answers to his study questions, and his midterm questions are either really vague or unreasonably specific.
Dissapointintment as a professor. Lectures and slides are confusing and look like theyve been made by a fifth grader. TAs dont grade on the same system. A friend and I did the pre-labs and post-labs together and I would always get lower scores. Not expecting to be tested on certain material? Expect it. This guy will throw anything at you.
Boring and unhelpful. Lectures are extremely unorganized and it often appeared he was rambling about nonsense. Study questions are useless and dont reflect what is on exams. Exams are graded harshly and are very unclear on what he expects. Included things on the final he spent less than a minute on. Only got an A- because of the other professor.
I think most people forget he hasn't taught BIS2B for 8 years and that's why exams/expectations could feel unclear. He still had a very obvious passion for the subject and gave a sincere effort in lectures which I respect. Scored very low on his exams after coming out of BIS2A with a high A so that's pretty humbling. Still got an A thru hard work.
I think Strong was an entertaining lecturer. He taught BIS2B as a fill-in when he usually does EVE101, so I guess I cut him some slack. His lectures were kind of all over the place, so I had to use the book to supplement. Regardless, he tried to base his tests on his lectures.
Although he included a lot of hilarious joke in his lecture, but it is not so content-centered, and it gets boring, so I recommend you use the textbook to gain a better understanding of the material. His test is easy, but his wording on the test are confusing.
he is an awful professor. I could not understand what was he talking about in the lecture, and the test he gave was unrelated with what he said in the lecture. Avoid him if you can
class isn't hard, but he's really boring. Also idk what's wrong with him but he words everything so badly on lab reports and quizzes.
I dont understand why he has a low rating. Super sweet guy and he really makes an effort to help his students. Quizzes and lab reports are worded a little weird, but they're not that confusing and easy to understand if you put some effort into it. Takes up time but all classes do. ppl take advantage of his kindness. read the book and study everyday
The class is more on the easy side, but the way he asks questions can be really unclear sometimes which can make the class difficult. For his online quizzes there were many times where I either had no clue what he was even trying to ask or all of his multiple choice options would be worded so oddly that I didn't know what option was the best.
While he can be accommodating to student feedback, it does not excuse the rest of the problems--his hw, quizzes, and assignments are VAGUE and contain frequent grammatical and informational errors that make things very unclear. He sometimes refuses to answer valid student questions on piazza and the lab reports are unnecessarily long. Avoid!
He's a nice guy and genuinely cares about students but despite his best efforts the quizzes and exams are kind of confusing and don't totally reflect the lectures. I had to look up information for homework separately because the reading and lectures weren't enough. Lab reports also sucked. He was really accommodating to students' needs though.
Reads off slides for lecture, confusing wording on questions/answers on quizzes, exams hardly cover anything from lecture. Although assignments/exams don't reflect the course, the lectures/slides make learning the material easy, straightforward, and interesting. Strong is the most caring professor I've had during my three years here. Ignore rating
Professor Strong is the most caring professor I've ever had. He listens to all the students needs, and makes adjustments to the syllabus to help us out. This was an online quarter due to the pandemic and he handled it all very well. The lab reports sucked but everything else was very fair! Do the homework b/c they are very similar to the quizzes!
He is a very caring person. The class was easy but we had quizzes every lecture. Some had weird wording but overall I didn't find them too difficult. I didn't read any of the readings and still did great in the class.
Professor Strong is amazing, he always tries to do what is best for his students. His quizzes and exams are worded a bit weird but not super hard. Grade is based off one of your two highest midterm grade, final, 3/4 lab reports, and 2 quizzes weekly. Lecture material isnt hard but I just got confused with the dates/eons.
Taken during the COVID shutdown, so hard to judge how he is in-person, but he's a very caring and reasonable professor. His style of lecturing can be hard to focus on, but if you do listen the content is interesting. He's a good prof and solid choice, but not someone to wait to get. Usual workload and fair grading rubrics.
Heard from others that he is retired now. If it's true, I might have taken the last EVE101 class with him. I have also taken his BIS 2B which was not as great. But his EVE101 is really interesting and nice to take. I just want to say he is such a nice professor that deserves everyone's respect. Hope people can still have chances to take his EVE101.
This was a tough class. The worst part of it was probably how info-heavy the lectures were, and it was pretty hard to focus given the sheer volume and constantly changing topics. He seemed cool and really devoted to the subject, but sadly I didn't enjoy it, even though ecology is my major track. (taken spring 2019)
He seems like a nice guy and lectures can be interesting at times but the stress of this class is not worth it. This class is very disorganized. Expectations were not clear and points were taken off for arbitrary things. Our lab report average and first exam average were in the D range.
I took him for the Fall quarter 2021. This class is so disorganized. Instructions are not clear. Test are free response however there is no partial credit it's all or nothing. The free response questions feel more like a quiz of memorization from the lecture not to mention wording on exams is so confusing. Lectures are tough to focus on.
Prof. Strong is clearly passionate about the topics being taught and is a very smart guy. There are 3 lab reports that are graded from a very strict rubric and are pretty hard. Midterms are based on specific details from lecture questions. Grading is tough. Definitely makes you work for it, but an A is possible.
Dr. Strong is very knowledgeable and clearly cares a lot about the subject and his students. It took a little while to adapt to his course structure, but he made adjustments based on class performance and ultimately things became more clear. Follow his rubrics closely and be patient and you can do fine!
Although this class seemed disorganized at first, the professor figured it all out and it became a much smoother experience. Class is graded on 3 labs (20% each), 2 midterms (30% each), and 1 final (30%). He drops 1 midterm and 1 lab. Easy A if you memorize the practice questions he gives. Make quizlets for the questions and its easy.
Class a bit disorganized and over 70 slides per lecture which is too much. Some irrelevant tiny info from the HUNDREDS will end up on the midterm/final. However, does curve tests and I ended up getting an A even though I put in minimal effort. So not best prof, but a good class to get an A/B
This class is incredibly disorganized. Although a midterm and lab report can be dropped, the course is graded by very few things with very little direction. The lectures are misleading and redundant and poorly match up with the analytical lab sessions. Handouts often have multiple errors. Students are often mocked when asking questions.
He is a very good professor. And most importantly very easy. If you put in some effort into this class like I did, you WILL get an A. Do really well on the Labs, literally follow everything it says and you will get like 110%.
He's passionate about this class but has disorganized lectures. There are two midterms (one dropped) and three lab reports (first is mandatory and you only have to do one other). The content is pretty easy, you just have to put a little effort in and you will ace the class.
Really easy. Sometimes his assignments and exams were unclear but in the end he gave us a good curve on the first exam and a redo for the lab report. You can tell he wanted us to succeed and made up for his mistakes with regrades and good feedback which is great! Highly recommend lectures were very enjoyable!
Extra credit is offered for each of the labs and exams. If you put in the work, the class is an easy A. His lecture slides are disorganized. He writes almost everything you need to know on his slides. Labs are interesting, though the grading criteria weren't always clear. Exam questions are all fill-in-the-blank or short-answer (but doable).
Curve on exams, says he doesn't give partial credit but he ended up doing it. Graded by FEW THINGS. 2 MT, 1 dropped. 3 Labs, 1 dropped and Final. Ex. Exam has 26 possible points, 20 = A+, so it will be out of 20 total. Let us redo only the first lab, but up to his discretion. Study all lec questions WELL, they show up on MTs.
Overall a great Professor, but only if you enjoy the subject. Graded primarily on participation and writing (writing seemed to be effort based, everyone got perfect scores on reports). Professor can ramble during discussions often, but mostly about interesting subjects relating to climate issues. Thought-provoking class. Easy to succeed
I love Dr. Strong. I love the structure of the class as well with having lab reports that if you put in work it is easy points. Lab reports seemed like a pain but I learned a lot. This is my major and he has truly inspired me. His professor was Garrett Hardin, the dude who created Tragedy of the Commons. Crazy! He has cool stories too.
Small class of about 15 students. Learned a lot. You have to write 3 papers but have a lot of freedom + he's a lenient grader. Must give a class presentation that's 25% of the grade, but because the class was so small I appreciated this assignment as it felt like a very low-stakes environment + I needed the practice. 99% sure everyone got an A+.
lectures aren't recorded, exams don't correlate to lecture or textbook topics, there are 2 midterms worth 30%, and he drops one. very hard to understand his writing and he goes on irrelevant rants. you basically hate to already have a good understanding of ecology and be able to immediately memorize what comes out of his mouth. he should retire.
Do not take him!!!! First of all he lied about the exam format, and then refused to give any partial credit for answers that are correct just because you missed a small detail on one part. Does not curve midterms either. The lecture material and slides are all over the place and he often makes errors on them. He should honestly retire.
Professional yapper. Class has little to no structure when it comes to lectures, which are what the unforgiving exams are on. No partial cred for exam questions, which were mainly multiparted. A poorly written instruction page is given before papers, no rubric till graded. MINUS POINTS FOR NOT HAVING A CREATIVE TITLE - lost respect for Ecology ngl
For the sake and respect of the field of Ecology, he must retire/resign.
Studying for tests is basically just memorizing a bunch of useless years and niche facts that you won't even use or remember afterwards. Refuses to give clear rubrics or specific instructions for lab reports, which results in many students not knowing what to do to get full points. Grade is based primarily on tests and lab reports.
not going to lie, it is a pretty easy class if you put a bit of effort, but i didn't learn that much :( . 3 lab reports/papers (only take top 2 scores), 2 midterms (one dropped), and the final. lectures are very boring and slow, I didn't go to many. discussion is mandatory. this is a required class for my major.
Bitter old man. Takes his hatred out on students. Very unfair grading.
really cares about ecology and is really knowledgable, but teaching-wise, not so strong. i got an A but for most of the quarter (aka the entire quarter up until the final), I had a C in the class. super weird grading and "curves." wouldn't take again tbh
He's passionate about the subject, but unfortunately that doesn't translate well to teaching it. If you're a good writer you'll sail through, since 40% of it is lab reports, but the midterms & final are hell. Multipart questions with no partial credit (eg 4 parts to the question, if you miss part a, you get zero points.) Drops 1 MT & 1 lab report.
Although his instructions and grading were super confusing, he curved a lot, and most people ended with A's after final grading. It was difficult to know your grades throughout the quarter; his instructions were always confusing for both exams and reports. Super nice guy tho pretty easy class. study the slides and don't neglect the small details
Great professor. This was a discussion based class and it was extremely easy. I think the class average was like 95%. Class is based on 3 reports, 1 presentation, 1 blog, and participation in class discussions. The class is not hard at all as long as u follow his rubric/guidelines. Very kind and caring man, will tell you lot of great stories!
His professor in undergrad at UCSB in 1960s was Gerrit Hardin (Tragedy of the Commons)!! Really cool dude, he gives a lot of feedback and is super easy to approach with questions/concerns. Tells a lot of cool stories. If you want to learn about ecology and take a stress free class. Take any of the classes he teaches.
Dr. Strong is good prof. He genuinely wanted us to learn and is passionate about ecology. His tests were hard, but reviewing the material and doing practice IS EVERYTHING! He was absolutely phenomenal despite his class being hard. Dr. Strong is one of the most respected scientists at Davis and I understand why :) He is one of my favorites at Davis!
The lab papers were graded so harshly for the first two. Strong expects you to memorize every single thing he mentions and is VERY detail orientated. Memorize everything, even the tiny pictures, they are important as well. He gives extra credit on exams, and drops a midterm. You won't know your final grade until finals are done.
Hes a fun lecturer, grading is pretty lenient bc a lot of the questions on the exam are free-response so the graders aren't too strict. Just follow the lecture material and youll get an A. Everything on his slides could be a potential q. I can see why some ppl dont like his class, it can seem disorganized but the tests are easier than you think.
AWFUL. Just like others are saying … Be ready to memorize miscellaneous RANDOM facts unrelated to ecology from his hundreds of slides … it's too much info. Thought it was a bio class but it ended up being more of a disorganized, very strange, philosophy and history class … very disappointed. Take with someone else if possible!!
Class consisted of 3 lab reports (only had to do 2), 2 midterms (only had to do/keep 1), and a final. Professor Strong can be a confusing lecturer because he just rambles sometimes, but he's very passionate about the topic and does care about students learning. The class could feel overwhelming when the midterms would overlap w the lab reports
Dr Strong is interesting. I would happily listen to a podcast from him, but his lectures are messy. They are full of tangents and irrelevant details and you never know whats gonna be on an exam... but once you know the format exams are kinda easy. He gives extra credit, but grades tough on papers and exams. Lectures mandatory. Overall, he's alright
Make sure to be caffeinated before his lectures! Make sure you do the review questions that he posts because he sometimes reuses them on exams. Make sure you're well acquainted with reading through academic articles in order to research for the lap reports. Do well early on if possible so you can coast later.
Dr. Strong seems like a very knowledgable person, he really cares about the subject matter and his lectures are engaging. The class layout was a bit confusing, but he is very accessible outside class & if you have a problem he's willing to meet with you one on one. Definitely recommend.
The professor is passionate about ecology, but the class can be a bit disorganized. Detailed studying and memorization are key to do well, even on the smaller details. Unstuckstudy and other study tools can really help prep for the exams. Despite the challenges, the professor genuinely cares about student learning.
Very heavy lecture with tons of information. I found the exams very confusing. Professor definitely cares about ecology. I found the exams extremely hard. If I took it again, I would go to office hours more and ask questions.
