I thought he was a horrible teacher. The class would ask questions that everyone was confused about and all he would do in return is yell and get frustrated you don't understand everything he puts down. Paying close to a thousand dollars you should feel comfortable asking for help, this is not the case with this teacher

Donald Sytsma was the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are really incoherent, and his use of the whiteboard doesn't help whatsoever. He writes purely in Mechner notation (hardly explaining what the symbols meant), and he rarely answers questions. When he does answer questions, he is usually rudecondescending. Try to avoid!

His lectures have little to do with the exams, as long as you study the book closely, you'll get a good grade. Only a few tests but many in-class and take-home quizzes. Very intelligent man, knows what he's talking about but rude when it comes to students asking questions. Limited office hours. Wouldn't advise missing classes.

Not so bad if you go for help after class.

Quiz every class, all work only based off of the book. If you do not teach yourself you will not pass. His lectures have nothing to do with exams or quizzes, they are pointless. Wish I could give him a zero stars.

What he teaches has nothing to do with what he quizzes and tests on but he coerces you into showing by having take home tests and in class quizzes. Yells at students. You should just have to read the book and pass but he makes you show up to his lectures that have nothing to do with anything you need to know.

I am a very active participant when it comes to classes. He dissuades you from wanting to do that. The lectures are long, incoherent and have nothing to do with what you are reading. My advice is to read the textbook, study the many quizzes he gives you for the exams and sit in the back and do homework for other classes.

Sytsma was not very helpful when students asked questions. Be prepared to read the book and pay attention when he says something from his lecture will be on the exam.

Honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures were incoherent and did not match up to what the assigned readings were at all. In a whole semester we barely got past the anatomy of the eye, did not learn any psychology. The only good thing I can say about him is that he let our class out over an hour early every time.

Completely rude and inconsiderate of student's success. Always whined about something. Lectures did not go along with readings at ALL. Definitely had to depend on teaching yourself. Quiz questions were very specific: like "What did it say in the margin on page 356?" so unless you have a great memory; awful. Ruined psychology. I recom. Stevenson.

Wasn't a difficult class. Easy to pass if you read the chapters. All exams and quizzes are multiple choice, and straight from the book. Classes are a waste, but you have to go to take the quizzes at the end. He rambles about irrelevant things, doesn't even touch topics that we're supposed to be learning. Also rude to students.

Without a doubt, the worst professor I have ever had. Each class, he lectures about historical figures in psychology for an hour and half in a boring monotone. After each lecture, there is a quiz. Nothing on the quiz correlates with his lecture, its all from the textbook. Extremely difficult, unhelpful, unpleasant. Switch professors ASAP.

Lectures are too long and have nothing to do with the quizzes at the end of every class. If you do the reading and understand it all without explanation then you'll do great.

Sytsma is REALLY smart and just has poor interpersonal skills. He DOES want students to engage & ask questions- just don't ask stupid questions. Meet with him outside of class! If you have a nihilistic sense of humor & can commiserate with him about how terribly USM treats the Psych Department, you'll get along- which is half the battle with him.

Worst Professor. I am beyond upset that USM continues to allow such a professor. He brings down the entire department. There's a reason why people leave the Psychology Department, and this old tenured dinosaur is why. He hasn't even published in years, and he does not keep up on current science. Stuck in the 70's where women belong at home.
