A very good lecturer but tests and exams are vague.
Has lots of interesting stories
No Comments
He has something against students from Montreal. Prepare to be insulted, subtly.
amazing prof! lectures are like stand-up comedy routines!
Awesome! I love this man!
he seems funny but by 204-331 he's not, and you realize he's quite cocky
tests are wacked...go to class. he's an entertaining prof
Tests are hard for intro-psych class, extremely entertaining in class
TEST QUESTIONS ARE HARD!!!!
tests are only hard because questions are worded terribly
Bad tests, Text book course, Good speaker, Tested on the littlest things class
Test on the JOKES he tells in class. Ridiculous. However, he is DEADLY FUNNY!!
borrring!! i've never heard anyone babble mindlessly this much before!
Hilarious...but gets wayyyy off topic sometimes...midterm was rough
talks way too much...and the exams...???
Despite the huge class size (654 students), he is a charismatic and engaging
Very entertaining, likeable, a character! tricky tests though (mult. choice)
Quite an entertainer!
very sexy. very.
Amazingly interesting and funny.I bring my friends(from other schools) to class.
i AM a snowflake you ****!! this guy is so high on himself its painful
in a pompous bs institution lik mcgill, thank god 4 profs lik taylor/ReallyCool
He was so hillarious. You just have to listen to what he's saying and not just pay attention to the funny stuff.

Best class I've even taken. He's so funny, such a good story teller. Take this class just for fun.

everyone thinks he's so damn funny but he is sooo annoying and condescending. he talks like no one has ever thought about the stuff he's said -i guess most haven't-and his ego is beyond high. his exams are also just super tricky multiple choice
He's awful - entertaining, but teaches you zero. It is a text book class and you must know everything - in addition to all his lectures, and the tiniest story that he may have told on the 2nd day of class. If you prepare from the start you'll do fine.
This guy is so HILARIOUS, he could be a stand-up comedian. Paper was fun...beware of multiple choice in the midterm and final

This is the best class i've taken without a doubt... and it's all because of taylor... he is hillarious and his exams really aren't as bad as everyone says... even if you think you don't like psych... take this class and you'll love it by the end!!!

Probably the teacher I hated the most at McGill. He's so pretentious, doesn't know how to lecture, and is the most unfriendly person I've ever met. It's really too bad you have to take his class if you're in Psychology (because it's a core).
He's very entertaining, but not a great teacher.
Educates and entertains. Those that don't like him or his exams are often the more science-oriented psych students (as opposed to arts). Intergroup relations is the best psych class i took at Mcgill.
Being a UCC grad, pretentious is my middle name. This fool makes me look like a marbles hustler from the backally's of Calcutta
Funny, intersting & lots of great stories, but does not cover much material. Helpful if you ask questions, but you have to read the text on your own to do well. Also, it is not always clear what he is testing on exams - name the authors of the textbook
wonderful... entertaining and interesting material
Awesome
Funny, a bit unstructured though. Tends to ramble, but makes a tedious class very interesting.
Did someone say "side-show entertainer??" At first I loved his lectures - I do admit, he has lots of enthusiasm. But DAMMIT, I'm so sick of the way he teaches now! It's entertaining, but it's NOT GOOD TEACHING!! Not learning = crappy e
One word: entertaining!
Took his social psych courses a couple decades ago. He was entertaining but awful! How can a Social Psychologist do research with minority groups living in poverty without incorporating a class analysis? It still boggles my mind all these years lat
He's entertaining and funny; he makes the class interesting. All you have to do is really pay attention in class and write down even bits of his stories. You also have to read the text, as he mentiones during the first class.
the class was very interesting, and his sense of humour was refreshing
amazing. lectures are very interesting. exams are tricky, but he makes this class worthwhile. he has such a positive attitude, high on life, ready for anything type of guy. hilarious! take his classes if you have the chance!!!!
This teacher is really funny and an amazing teacher!

sooooo funny, never missed his classes, i wish all professors were as enthusiastic as he is, there is a point to every story he says so be sure to catch the gist of it!!
So funny!! He really makes my day! And you can tell that he wants to get to know his students just by the way he walks up and down the aisle!
My favorite teacher so far. Full of charisma, he makes everything really interesting with lots of context and all. Only bad thing about the class is that its quite a bit of work.
Best class ever!!!! The final was hard, the research proposal was marked like hell from the TAs but the class is awesome! I read the textbook for fun (no joke!) And he's great as a teacher, the topics are all interesting and he tells stories all class!
Going to lecture is important...and remember to listen to his stories...the stories are enertaining but dont be fooled they ARE on the exam. Keep up with your readings. Great course though.
hard course
Great teacher and very fun in class.
Taylor is hilarious! At times you may feel that you aren't getting anything from the class, but that's because his lectures are so funny and clear, so you think you are having too much fun to be learning.
He certainly tries to be entertaining, but the lecture pace is so slow (too many pauses)and you feel like you haven't learned much. There's so much reading to do on your own, and I wish he wouldn't get sidetracked so much by his "amazing research ide
He uses his class to talk about himself... I guess no one else will listen to him otherwise.
charismatic unbelivable lecturer. Not very structured though, just seems to talk about whatever he can remember at the time. material is awsome and seems easy but exams are very ambiguous which makes them hard. Most interesting class ive taken though
best professor ever
You'll love him or you'll hate him. Personally, I think he's the best prof at mcgill. He's entertaining, accessible, and he's one of the only profs in the psych department who encourages creativity over memorization.
Tries so hard to be funny but is really boring in the end. I hate the way he tries to act hip- he just comes off looking moronic. Unfortunately, Social Psych is a pre-req so you are stuck with him.
Not a serious academic. A complete fake.
highly entertaining, lectures are really fun. makes super hard and ambiguous multiple choice, and the readings are really boring and lame. overall, great lectures, awful testing and readings.
Hilarious man, bad prof. He had me laughing throughout his class, but his lectures are really badly organized. Because lectures are so light, it's easy to underestimate the information you'll need to know for the midterms - don't.
if you can decipher his odd stories and seemingly rambling style, you'll do well in this class. don't get frustrated, just hang in there...
I thought this was amazing class. Don really tried to reach the students on a personal level as an equal and not someone of superiority. I thought this was a great class.

This guy really enjoys being a stage clown. And that's ALL he does for the whole term. Prepare yourselves for the most time-wasting,learn-nothing course of your whole university life.
Taylor rocks my socks! He is hilarious and always manages to relay the information of the course to the students in ways they can relate to it. He is great I hated missing his lecture! HIGHLY recommend it!
BEST PROF EVER!
Great lecturer... rarely do I laugh outloud in a class. Smart guy, and a really interesting course; he makes the material relevant to the students. There are periods of dull repetiveness... sometimes he takes an easy stubject and hammers it in too hard.
i loved this class. taylor is more of an entertainer than a teacher but the material is easy so who cares? im convinced that cup in his hand when he teaches has alcohol in it, as he gets more eratic as class goes on but i love him
a great performer who loves his topic, but don't expect to get much from the course other than stuff you already knew. his rants are priceless, and if you want to laugh out loud, he's your man. but watch out for that paper !
Incredibly entertaining, but also extremely knowledgeable. Has a real passion for what he teaches, and communicates that to his students during lectures.
Exams are hard, but very good lectuer, very fun, it's a real show each time... Without his exam, he's the best...
His exams are not difficult if you have a sense of humour and actually pay attention to the theory behind his jokes.
Very entertaining teacher.Very smart and will make you laugh your a** off. However, examples are tough and the paper is a killer.
Funny and entertaining, but when it comes to actually teaching he is extremely redundant and VERY slow to cover the material. Also a lot of what he says is extremely inconsistent with the textbook and his exams questions are ambiguous. It took me over 2 months to get any help from him or his TAs.
He is a cross between irritable old-school professor and a fun entertainer who loves the limelight. Don't expect to get an awsome mark. His multiple choice questions are so convoluted you feel like you never even studied. Paper: choose a concept and google it - you might find example experiment.
Very nice professor as a person. Extremely open to students if you visit him. One of my favorite professor. BUT the exams are HARD and the course itself has too much workload. Reading 13 chapters PLUS all the lecture(they are seperate!) isn't easy thing to do. This course SHOULD be at least 4 credit
Hardest class I've ever taken but best prof I'll ever have. Midterm was unfair and tested random oneliners in the text and lectures. Final was impossible, but if you studied well and knew the concepts, you were able to deduce answers. Paper was unfair - easy ideas got the highest marks.
This course was pretty straightforward. The textbook is easy to read and interesting, and his lectures elaborate on the text and bring in other information. I loved his lectures and the course. Just make sure you do go to the lectures and read the text and you will be fine, but the project is hard.
I loved this class. There is a lot of material but it was very interesting and the prof is really entertaining; you will stay awake all class. So far this is my favorite class.
Good class, the prof is an entertainer...beware of fellow students that explain away their bad marks by saying his exams are convoluted. For this class it comes down to basic psychological common sense for the multiple choice questions, either you got it or you don't.
I don't care what this guy before me says, this teacher makes the stupidest tests that might be good for creating a bell curve but aren't good for testing REAL learning achieved from the course. If you're good at multiple choice tests without having to really know the material, take this class!
Took this course over 10 years ago. Still remember this teacher as a truly dedicated, knowledgeable and entertaining prof. He was such a joy to listen too. Still remains my favourite prof of all time.
Taylor makes the material interesting and easy to understand, but he goes a little slow. The paper wasn't as bad as everyone says
Wow this class is so interesting!! The prof is funny and gives good explanations and he was so entertaining I was always looking forward to the next class. Exams are ok, just don't read all the chapters at the last minute! Want a good grade? Take notes from the book.
hes extremely entertaining.hes a nice guy but his exams are a little tough.i def recommend this class.not too much work.
Really interesting class - you'll still be thinking about it later on. I don't know about the man himself but as a teacher he's entertaining and wonderful.
Took 215 and intergroup relations class about five years ago, and D.T. remains one of my most memorable professors ever. Take these classes because you want to be inspired, and enlightened, because you want to think about the world, and the people in it, not because you want a good grade.
I LOVE HIM. totally fair. dont worry about the class-- he's funny as hell-- exams are not that bad. listen to the lectures!
His lectures are easy to follow and his tests are really not that hard as long as you read the textbook. can be a little boring at times but it is a pretty easy class.
Prof is interesting and funny..a definite asset to Mcgill..very smart and approachable man. I found the exams to be kinda hard but you can't have everything!! He's worth it though which is why I am taking him again and would recommend him to others!!!!
LOVE this man! I am going to take inter-group relationship next year!
Don is HILLARIOUS and a terrific prof! I wouldn't dream of missing a class b/c he makes them so entertaining! His exams are tough and his assignments are..interesting - but the class is definitely worth it!
love him-an excellent professor

really entertaining, a great lecturer, interesting material. i loved this course, and watn to take mroe with him.
The tests are not easy. The paper may be annoying. But D.Taylor is such a nice guy. One of the best lecturers in Mcgill. His lectures are more like a Comedy. The textbook is very interesting. He also has a great patience-he's willing to help anyone no matter how long you stay in his office.
an amazing prof. lectures are so much fun.
so hes funny and gets so into his lectures that he starts running all over the place ull die of laughter but his joking attitude can be misleading bcuz u really do need to study for his tests cuz there r a lot of hypothetical examples

LOVED HIM! Funniest prof, great lectures... but you better keep up with the readings or you'll be screwed when the final comes around! Grading was pretty hard. Hardest paper I've had to write at McGill. His final was fair... luckily the midterm was a joke. Take it if you're prepared to do some work... the class in general was awesome.
His leactures are extremely entertaining...but yeah the exams are pretty vague and ambiguous...but he's definately worth it!
A very good prof, very entertaining to listen to, but his exams are quite challenging! Make sure you do the readings and know them very well..
Very funny teacher, makes the classes extremely fun and interesting, but be careful, it all seems easy in class but his exams are pretty hard. Know your stuff very well if you want to get a good grade.
Best time I have ever had inside a McGill classroom would be in his class. Very interesting and makes his students want to learn more and hear him ramble on more. His stories are priceless, including his rants about Oprah and cell phones. Hard to fall asleep in his class when students beside you are lauging every 3 secs. Exam is quite difficult.
Okay I know he is a funny prof and all, but his exam questions are just too vague and subjective (I wish the written project counted for more).
Awesome prof! He's so funny and makes the class REALLY interesting. His exams aren't hard, just know the textbook well, and when you study for his lecture questions on the exam, think how his examples in class apply the theory you are learning. They grade the paper hard, but the final is easy. Awesome prof!
he makes material even more interesting! his exams are so hard. paper? paper is tough to get good mark as well!!!!
This teacher has a real real charisma and sense of humor, OME MAN SHOW guaranteed @t every lecture...which makes the topic much more interesting but you have to read beween the lines to understand the theory he's talking about !
Fascinating class, most people say it is very hard but it's not that hard if you just work a LOT and don't start the paper at the last minute.
Very good teacher, you'll be impressed by how much he can captivate your attention when you listen to him, and how much you can learn in only one lecture. This course is worth taking. But, danger: a lot to read... and exams are a bit tricky, just listen very very well in class, especially his small examples, and try to understand his views.
For anyone who wants to learn, this teacher is very bad. He makes a lot of jokes but he responds incredibly poorly to questions, has exams are exclusively multiple choice, and he provides terrible specific examples of the material. Everyone I know is upset by his 15min off-topic anecdotes that he does for the express purpose of making students laug
great course, the professor is funny and it is clear that he really cares about the subject matter, I found that he explained everything very well but yes, the exams are tricky. study hard and you will do fine, just listen in class because his opinion comes through in a lot of the questions.
He is really easy to listen to, but the exams are insanely hard. Listen to his rambling stories because thats where he gets the questions from.
Amazing teacher and an amazing course. It's soooooo interesting and he is so funny that you forget you are in class.
His exams are super hard with many questions irrelevant to what we actually should know about. He tries to confuse everyone using wierd questions reflecting his personal opinions and grades for Papers are low and TA's capacity is limited but grade papers so rigorously.Sucks
Best class I've taken so far at McGill! The prof will definitely hold your interest. fascinating subjects. exams okay. paper is really hard.
Amazing prof, great course... exams are difficult, but not impossible. Take this course is you liked 215!
I personally don't see what the buzz is. Sure he's funny, but if I want something funny I'll watch Dane Cook. Exams are sometimes ridiculous, but still doable.
Chill Prof. Lecture material important for exams.
Very amusing teacher and makes the material approachable, but his exams are quite tricky and difficult. If you're taking this class, pay serious attention to him when he's being serious and actually lecturing...and do the readings...because the questions on the exams are really from both.
Honeslty, because of this course I decided to not to take any social psych courses.. Even if you think you got all the concepts, he will screw you up in the exam and what's up with the essay?? the TAs have to mark so many of them and they will not care about you!! I felt so 'deindiviudated' while i was taking this course..
One of the most entertaining psych courses in McGill. Defeinitly most fun class among the 200 lvl class. Text book is quite long, but the content is fun and interesting unllike other 200 lvl psyc textbooks. His lectures are definitly etertaining also. But..exams are very tricky, his exams are harder than 300 and 400 lvl social psyc related courses
as an econ major, i was out of my element- but great class. he made psyc interesting, and was a really entertaining lecturer. Probably the only class I've actually laughed in multiple times throughout the year. kept things light and fun, but does requiring more then a little studying to do well. FOR YOUR ESSAY, KEEP IT SIMPLE AND DONT GET COMPLEX!!
Exams are crap, they are hard and deceptive.
He's a really funny and entertaining prof, but the exams are pretty hard and he picks out obscure stuff. Listen to him when he's actually lecturing and not joking around.
Highly entertaining in class. Notes not all that important. Tests focused on concepts of lectures.
Severely overrated. His rants are neither enlightening nor particularly novel. Lectures are rambling and disorganized. I did not enjoy this class at all. I'd been looking forward to it, too, because it was so hyped up - he has a weird cult following. But I learned very little in this class. The "hard science" psych classes at McGill are much better
Prof is entertaining, knows his stuff (doesn't have to refer to his lecture notes every 2 seconds). Sometimes goes off on tangents and his rants are sometimes confusing but in general really interesting.
One of my favourite profs ever! Not only does he make class SO entertaining, but also really really interesting. He tells a lot of anecdotes which are really funny but also relevant. Going to his class is like going to the theatre. No, it's better. The textbook is also very interesting... the whole course is. The research project was a drag though.
very entertaining but overall doeant teach much.I didnt learn a lot. Plus his exams focus on the lectures and are very picky
Very interesting teacher but difficult course. Prof talks like its stand-up comedy; very entertaining. Midterm and final both composed fully of multiple choice questions, half from lectures, half from text. Text readings are a lot but interesting. Worst is the term paper. Dont get too creative on it and you should do okay. Class is not an easy one.
Pretty lame, but you can ace this course. If you figure him out, the tests turn out to be pretty easy. He likes to give mostly easy questions, and a few hard ones here and there to seperate the good from the average. Buy the NTCs! I aced the tests, and failed the paper -> keep it simple and FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES!
Very humorous character
Fun teacher, but though exams :(
Awesome teacher, really entertaining... sometimes goes off on tangents but really knows his stuff. Has powerpoints for notes but speaks quickly. Lecture usually recorded so going to class isn't always necessary.
Great professor, very interesting lectures, love his rants & random stories
Well well well... NOT SO SURE!! writing assignment is ugly. sort of... not really fair becoz this is only 200 level course so students do not have clear idea or skills to come up with scientific experimental design proposal.exams confusing. only lecture was interesting!
the marking for this class is insane.the final was really bad and the paper was marked really harshly.its a really interesting class though and hes good at capturing ppls attention.
He's really, really funny. Had him for social psych and going to class is surprisingly fun. Don't take anything for granted, you have to write down EVERYTHING this man says and really pay attention because if u don't, it will come back and haunt u during the exam. Exams are half about the lectures, half about textbook so read as well
He's the best teacher (if I can actually call him that) that I ever had. He was like a motivational speaker, a stand up comedian, a one man show. Lectures were so interesting and everything was applied to real life examples. However, he could speak more about the text material in class
engaging, funny but deceptively simple material. Unwilling to help individual students, unstructured lectures, unpredictable and disorganised material. very detailed exams, do-able but dont underestimate them! I dont think I'd take this class again, found his humour tiring and too little focus on the students ad their needs. But fun, if you like hi
The best prof I've ever had. I took both of his classes (social psyc and intergroup relations) and I absolutely loved them. He is so interesting and the most approachable professor I've had at McGill. His exams are tough, but fair as long as you pay attention and go to lectures. I wish he taught more classes!!
He resents the fact that social psychology is not a respected academic field and constantly refers to it as a "science" in an apparent effort to refute this belief. He is not shy about basing exam questions on petty and irrelevant details. His rambling and disorganized lectures are nothing short of infuriating. Course material is very fluffy.
i'm so obsessed with his lectures. it's my favorite course at mcgill so far! Every single lecture on its own is superb, well but quite often he would go too far off the topic..anyways it's a course i don't wanna miss any lecture:)
It's not as fun as his Social Psych but still quite interesting. However, one of the textbook is poorly organized and thus it's hard to get a good grade in exams..><
Be prepared to THINK about the concepts during the exam. Not only do you have to know theories and definitions, but you also have to relate them to studies and use logic. The midterm was hard, the paper was horrendous. Some of it is interesting and some of it is not.
Professor Taylor has a way of teaching by using hilarious examples that aid in the understanding of the material. His analogies are so outrageous (or maybe it's just the way he says it) that it makes it near impossible not to understand the concept he is getting at. Funniest prof ever.
This is the one of the best profs! He is soo funny, he makes the lectures entertaining and interesting. Has a lot of stories that back up his point and are heldful for understanding the idea. Tough exams, but great great course!
Really did not enjoy this course at all; no matter how much he may defend it as a science, this is an arts course. Spends a lot of lecture time on jokes (that I honestly find stupid and repetitive) and paper is marked not on credit, but based on deductions. Can't wait to be done with this fluffy course.
Ya Prof is funny but this is not a comedy class. He makes it harder than it needs to be by making his lectures count for 50% of questions on exam which would be ok if it didn't require us to read his mind. Midterm: brutal, paper: harsh marking but final was fair. If this is an elective for you, take it with other (winter) prof, not Taylor!
Multiple choice emans which focus on the littlest of deatils, knowing the term and concepts isn't always enough, you're expected to know random details and the research paper is ridiculous not an easy grader, rambles on and on in class and is hilarious but those ramblings do appear on the exams!
UGH. I can't stand this prof. His lectures are full of infuriatingly useless information. He spends an hour and a half on something that should take 20 minutes. Both of the texts are written by him, and he uses the class to promote his own theories instead of teaching us what is currently accepted in the scientific community. Difficult and stupid
I'm surprised people are saying it's so difficult-understand the concepts, be able to apply them to new situations, read the text, attend lectures, and for the essay FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, and you should do well.
HORRIBLE professor. Makes you think he's peachy keen, a cool guy who is willing to listen to what you have to say. Even if you attend every class, study the material and do everything he says you can still do extremely poorly. I remember now why I had hated him in PSYC 215
Interesting guy, great lectures. Unnecessarily difficult exams and harsh grading on essay (ie. based on penalties, not how good your paper is overall). Views are somewhat contradictory, ie. seems to promote cultural relativism while simultaneously showing how cultural deficit is applicable in terms of disadvantaged groups in reality.
Essay marking is hard and shady. Tests are basically trying to predict how Taylor thinks, which can be tricky. Those looking for legitimacy and justification in the letter grade they receive look elsewhere. Taylor is accurately described as an arrogant bloated windbag, but at least he's an amiable and amusing windbag who has some stories to tell.
One of the hardest psychology courses at McGill, but definitely one of the most interesting!! It was the best way to start my day T and Th. Do exactly what he asks for the paper (and provide lots of references) and you'll do well. Study your brain out for the exams and you *might* do well.
Granted, I wasn't super interested in the topic. Granted, I already didn't like Taylor from PSYC215. But this class killed every interest I had in his field. He teaches only his own books, he goes on tangents that seem unrelated to the topic but he still asks for them in the exam. He falls behind schedule and blames students. Avoid it if you can!
Had him for 215 and 331, really enjoyed both classes. The guy is full of himself for sure, but I found that entertaining...difficult but fair exams, papers were marked pretty easy i thought...don`t bother with the textbook tho, its nothing different than you hear in class
Very hard. Expects you to write a graduate level paper in a first year psych course. He is the biggest hippocrate, seems really cool but will screw you over completely when it comes to the exam. I went to every class, studied like hell for the exams, and couldn't answer half the questions on the final because they seemed to come from nowhere!
He is unfailingly entertaining and makes everything interesting. I have never looked forward to a class as much as PSYC 215.
Donny-T is a comedian. His classes are entertaining but at times hard to pay attention to as you think things are completely tangent and stop paying attention, yet they are on the midterm/exam which is half lecture questions. Winter class has no paper which is 9 pages (follow the outline strictly and you should do fine). Hard to get an A but possib
The midterm was fair. The final was hard. The paper is impossible. He expects you to write a graduate paper in a 200-level psyc class - which is totally ridiculous. He's full of himself and really biased in what he teaches (teaches his own researches). He's really funny tho.MAKE SURE TO WRITE DOWN E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G he says!
Just speed through lecture recordings online! Textbook material seems easy but make sure you know it inside out because trusting commonsense will be your downfall. Not sure why people are saying paper was so hard. The marker said my hypothesis/theory barely made sense and I still aced it because the assignment outline is so clear. Take this class!
Midterm was death. Paper was easy. Final was okay-ish. Make sure you take note of all his examples in class. Know the theories from the textbook. The exams are applied theory and NOT factual theory (e.g. asked to apply theory, not recall textually what the theory was.) Know your theories because they are often the complete opposite of commonsense!
He's so pretentious, arrogant and full of himself. One of the worst classes I've taken at McGill...
Interesting lectures. Assumes too much though, leaving much unclear. Too much attention to his own work (e.g. only exam question on a 40 page article was how many references the field has made to his book...). Lectures recap texts (his own). Disagreeable essay grading. 3 Days before exam, still did not post lecture slides for march and april.
For the midterm and especially the final exam you need to be able to intuit the answers. There's no factual or textual basis most of the time, instead you're being testing on Taylor's expressed opinions. The second half of the course covered almost no material. The final exam was probably the worst final I've written in my time at McGill.
This prof is the WORST I've ever had in McGill and I've been here for 4 years! He's EXTREMELY BIASED!!! seems more like a confused little child than a real prof!
rambles on and on about things with seemingly no relation to social psych whatoever. lectures are impossible to follow, generally only one slide each. you can never tell what is or is not important because it all seems unimportant. exams are brutal, questions are either worded confusingly or related to things barely mentioned in class or in the book
I would sit there and have to watch my ass bleed for the entire time, literally nothing you can do...this guy sucks
Despite most of these comments, this prof is hilarious and intelligent. He seems like a fabulous coffee date bc he is so interesting. The class seems easier than it is, but it's worth taking. He goes 'off topic,' but if you listen it actually is relevant. Everyone on this page must not have read the textbook, which is mandatory to pass the exams.
If you though that the course wasn't relevant to the text or that the prof ventured off subject without purpose, you obviously were too arrogant to listen and understand the course. this guy is hilarious and made class very entertaining, its not difficult, you just have to make an effort to understand the concepts and then its very interesting.
The lectures seemed like they wouldn't be important but the midterm was really hard unless you paid really close attention to the prof's ramblings during class. Lots of textbook reading that doesn't seem to relate to the lectures but it does on the exams. Midterm was extremely difficult! Need to study a lot to get a decent mark.
Avoid like the plague.
I did OK on the midterm, and then absolutely BOMBED the paper even though I spent days working on it, making sure I carefully and flawlessly followed instructions and wrote a clear, concise argument. I've never received a grade so low on a paper in my life. Take this course in the winter with the other prof if you don't want to destroy your GPA!!!
Trust me, I am a very easy going person... and I thought Prof T. was not very helpful at all. I found myself often skipping his lectures; he rambles a whole lot about what you think may be useless stuff but ends up being important. The subject isn't hard, it's interesting. I just wish... I took this course next term... with a different prof.
I wish I would have seen this prof's rating prior to taking this course. DO NOT take this course with him as a complementary, unless you want to have VERY negative consequences on your GPA. Pay attention to the seemingly random stuff he says in class. Be prepared for ambiguously formulated exams, difficult paper and utter disappointment. Beware!!!
Amazing prof, came out of every lecture feeling like I learned something relative to daily life, really enlightening material w/ a prof who knows his stuff. It's not a easy course but if something good isn't worth putting the effort into it then why bother...
Avoid this prof. A 200 level course with a graduate level research paper (that you will be refused to be helped with) and difficult exams... The few funny jokes and anecdotes he tells in class are just not worth it. Avoid, seriously.
How to get an A: Don't skip. Pay attention in class. Write everything including anecdotes down in your notes. Read chapters, and then review them. For paper (I got 93%, worked on it for 1.5 days) just familiarize yourself with the style of professional journal articles and pretend you're writing one yourself. Hard work, but A is very possible!!!
Avoid!!! Go to class, memorize everything he says word for word and the text book word for word and don't write the paper based on what your interested but rather what they want to hear (Much of the grading scheme was subjective. Though the professor is funny here and there, it's not worth the trauma for not even an A in the course.
He's a really interesting guy. The midterm and final are both split 50/50 between material from the textbook and lecture and are multiple choice. Although multiple choice from lecture are a bit vague, his stories and anecdotes are interesting and easy to understand. They illustrate the concepts really well. Text book is VERY clear. Fun class!
Memorize the lectures (questions are copied and pasted from the transcript) and know the textbook concepts inside out (can be tricky to tell apart). The paper is so easy! You're told exactly what to do for every single mark. Don't try and get creative. My theory didn't even make sense and I aced it because I can follow instructions.
you will enjoy going to his lectures, he's funny and intelligent. Definitely worth the hard work. I personally couldn't keep up with the reading so it's best to take it when you have time for lots of reading/if you're a fast reader.. listen to every word and write down everything! do not memorize, but understand!
He's a lecturer that definitely keeps you engaged, but sometimes his stories seem made up and you doubt how that's going to help you, but you really do need to write all his examples and stuff because they show up in the randomest places on the midterm and final. If you work hard enough, you can get that A.
Best prof I've had at McGill so far.
Some people think he's arrogant, which I wouldn't entirely dismiss but he's so funny and laid back that it's ok. Interesting and funny classes, sometimes different from the book, so try to attend & take notes. Exams are pretty tricky; figure out what experiment/theory every question is secretly pertaining to to answer correctly.
Best prof i've had at Mcgill so far!
Don Taylor is a really great prof, really interesting lecturer. Definitely recommend anyone to take this class!
Really interesting prof and really interesting class. Taylor makes the lectures interesting and funny with lots of stories that help make the concepts clearer. Midterm was hard, definitely allocate lots of time to study for it! Term paper was easy!
Taylor's class was story time. He is such an interesting prof, one of the best I've had at McGill. He's not an easy marker, but I left every class questioning and analyzing my every day life. Take it!!!
I thought Social Psych would be a challenging and thought provoking course. However, he presents material in such a way that is unacademic (very much story time) and frankly I've lost interest in psychology because of him. It's an easy course if you rote learn every word in the lectures and the book (even the parts about him being a hockey coach)
Prof. Taylor has to be one of the most entertaining and hilarious profs at McGill. His classes are extremely informative and full of fantastic stories and examples and not simply textbook definitions. Midterm was pretty tricky, paper short and straightforward and final was relatively easy. Getting an A is possible.
Taylor is definitely my favorite prof at McGill so far. He's very interesting to listen to, I always lookedfrward to his class! If you take careful notes on the textbook and study the details of his lecture its definitely possible to get an A. A midterm and a straight-forward paper. Highly recommend it!
He is awesome, but make sure to take notes on ALL of the random stuff he talks about in his lectures, no matter how irrelevent it seems. He tests on everything. But he is still one of my favorite professors at McGill. Classes are so much fun!
The guy was really great, approachable and down to earth. He is funny and tells in depth examples to make the theory's relate to life. Class is really easy as long as you go to class and take notes on the stories he tells, they may seem like little antidotes but his tests include them (I think its to make sure people are going to class).
AMAZING TEACHER! He simplifies tough concepts into very simple explanations. He's quite funny too; each class can easily lighten up your day by giving you a nice laugh, as well as learning some useful and interesting stuffs! However, his exams are definitely hard; study the lectures VERY well, because he will likely ask very minitious questions...
I love Taylor! Really funny and expressive character (as most social psych profs are). His exams were a bit weird. Some were really straightforward and related to the lectures/book and some were not. It's really a crapshoot. Regardless, study as much as you can and you'll probably end up with a good mark.
Only teaches his own research. Story-telling style of teaching with a lot of humour. You go to class not because it's necessary (it really really isn't) but because he's so engaging. Not about marks (don't even break a sweat) but critical exposure to a group of undervalued Canadians.
I took this class years ago yet still remember points he made clear as day. A very enjoyable class which makes you just want to sit back and listen - but do take notes too.
Amazing prof. Loved the class.
Don't know why he gets such a bad rep. Exams were fine. Paper was beyond straight forward. Should be especially easy for psych students. Plus, he's a good story teller. This is one of the birdies of the Psychology program, but really worth taking since its not as dry as some others.
This class is a must. You'll never want to miss a class! Text is exactly what's taught in lectures and is SO small. I ended up loving the material and learnt a lot. Paper could not have been more straightforward. Easy A if you put in the work (and there isn't much of it). LOVE U DON!!
The only B I have received in the last two years of my undergrad. The gradings on the paper (worth more than the midterm) are a complete hit or miss (you either get an nice grad student grader or you don't). His material is interesting but there is ZERO structure to the course and most of the time it is story time. NOT worth lowering your GPA for.
PROS: Fantastic lectures. Very interesting material. Very engaging. Funny. CONS: Exams very tough, require enormous attention to detail. Know each theory inside & out, pay attention to his tangents (there are many). Also, let him finish a thought before you get offended as he often gives voice to all sides of a debate so as to set up a point.
very entertaining and funny lecturer loved him! the material (first half) is so interesting, after the midterm it gets dull and repetitive. the midterm was fairdetailednot much different than any psych exam. the paper is annoying but doable (hasn't been graded yet so i can't say much) readings are less than other psych courses.
One of the better Profs I've had in Psychology, and there are a lot of good ones. Really interesting and engaging lectures, and the content is easy to digest if you pay attention. You won't ever be tempted to skip class. His exams, well, Psych exams are always hard. Go see him in his office, even if just to chat, he likes to meet his students.
Professor Taylor is quite a showman. Expect it and enjoy the ride. You will have a good time on top of learning a lot ! You can expect a bit of repetition but its ok. As for the evaluation process. Sadly consistent with the faculty of Psychology, it is meant to meet a bell curve. Get help from previous students to know how to prepare succeed
I don't understand why people rate him badly, I'm an B student and finished with a A- and didn't put much work into it. The teacher is amazing, funny, and clear. He is repeatable but for a reason: it'll all be in the exams. Exams are detailed oriented, and pay attention to his anecdotes, but text is so small and it's easier than most psych classes
Don's class was great! I loved the content. I you enjoyed Social Psychology you will enjoy this class as well! He is a Great teacher with so much experience... His books are a good read and not too long. The tests are not easy but doable. I recommend this class.
Psyc 331 was a great class. Prof. Taylor is an all-around good guy. He may ramble on sometimes during lectures about his experiences but it's all in good fun. Read the books, do the work, and you'll enjoy the class. It's very enjoyable. Study HARD. Exam questions can sometimes be strange but if you do the readings and study well, you'll be fine.
He's a very engaging and funny lecturer, though a bit confusing at times as he can move from one idea to another quickly and it can be hard to understand his point. The material is super interesting, the 2 textbooks are well written and easy to study, though his exams are somewhat harder than the average psyc exam. Really enjoyed the course overall
Great prof. but his lectures are a bit boring in my opinion but the material is clear. Midterm was really difficult but the final was quite easy. You have to read the books if you want a good grade! Graders are really though for the paper.
