It has been a great semester. She could convert some dry concepts into not so bring stuff. Evertyhign has been explained very clear.
Dong Ye is a very good and easy Teacher .
Great instructor. Very kind and helpful. Quirky
I had Dong for last semester. I so like the project at the end. Fun class. The exam is not easy though. A lot of reading to do. :-(
She is one of the best MIS instructors at NAIT. So, she is an excellent teacher, brings the content of this course alive, making it relevant, interesting and fun. The Midterm and Final exam created by Department, you have to read the MIS book carefully, including tiny notes and diagrams. Highly recommend and will take more courses with her.
Very knowledgeable. Interesting to follow lass. Lots of case analysis though. Definitely read the textbook for exams.
She tries to help you out as much as possible. But most of the times, you ask her a question, she will answer with a question. She is friendly and easy to talk to, but many times, she confuses the person further.
The class is interesting. Lots of cases throughout the semester. Dong is really knowledgeable. The class is fun but intensive. Be prepared to read lots for the exam. You really have to work hard to get an A.
I do not understand anything in the class, better not to attend the class. Midterm and final exams are awesome. Easy questions.
Took CMIS2250 summer class with her and absolutely loved it. Quite a bit of memorization required for the exams, but manageable. She marks fairly and often updates and reminds class of the schedule and what to expect for the week. Not much waiting on marking course work as well as she gets to them quite fast. Highly recommended!
I took CMIS2250 online and Dong was my teacher for it. Participation within the Moodle Discussions was important, as it was worth a good chunk of your mark, as well as the quizzes. The first SAP exercise caused me nothing but trouble but Dong went out of her way to email be back and fourth until I got it. She was so caring and kind, great teacher.
Super helpful. Responds to all emails in a timely manner and is actually helpful. Expectations are clear. This was a pretty easy course. Some easy online assignments and one small group project worth 5%. You do have to do extra studying for the midterm and final. Don't rely on the assignments to get you through everything.
Dong Ye is an excellent professor who is passionate in her field and cares about her students. She will gladly take the time to help with topics and concepts when asked. She is quite funny, too. Makes class enjoyable, for what the course is about.
Too much writing and reading in her class.
The class is super interesting. I would love to go to her classes. She is very knowledgeable and always gives useful comments. A lot of group work, though. You have to study hard to earn an A.
Dong is quite the character. She is a bit quirky which some students find annoying but I enjoyed her humour during the 8 am lectures. She focuses on what you need to know for exams and both of our midterms were open book (GASP). I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a GPA boost. There was one group assignment but it was fairly easy.
For an online course, dong was awful. She barely responded to emails and if she did she gave short, rude answers. Would not recommend for online
She is a quite good instructor, but I hardly understand her English.
I had Dong as my CMIS teacher. I blame the software that the students have to use as the problem, the teacher tries her best to answer questions. Overall she gives clear instructions and reminds the students of what is due every week.
I had Dong for two courses CMIS2250/3350, I strongly believe that Professor Ye vastly exceeds the teaching standards established in postsecondary institutions, especially in her use of technology (Kahoot and many other apps) and creative teaching methods. Recommend her A+++
Half of your grade is reliant on group projects that have far too much content for only a 5% reward to your final grade. We no longer have quizzes or term exams yet she is continuing with lectures that barely scrape the surface of the next project. You'll also have to purchase a program to complete one of these 5% quizzes. Accent is tough sometimes
Miss Dong ye is the worst professor I have ever gotten in my years of attending NAIT. She is very racist and does not give attention to people who are not her ethnicity especially. When she speaks she does not care to stop and ask if everyone is on the same page. I HEAVILY ADVISE you to save yourself from stress and not to take her for CMIS.
Face to face classes are useless, the questions on the midterm and final are totally different from our class lessons. Don't recommend her
Tough course as you will need to do quite a number of assignments. She is, however, very helpful. Interesting lecture. Prepared to do lots of group work.
I took the online class with Dong. I ran into problems at the beginning. So stressed out, Thank God, Dong helped me through the tough time. I was on track in before the term exam. She was very patient in answering my many emails.
Dong is one of those instructors who truly wants students to excel and gives really great feedback on assignments and projects. This course is a lot of work, though. I really enjoyed the hands-on part, and learned a lot. Thanks.
I had Dong for Year 2 and Year 3. She definitely knows her stuff and is willing to work with you. She is very accessible outside of class as she responds to emails quickly.
I wasn't a big fan at first, but she grew on me. Goes through assignments in class thoroughly, which REALLY helped! Tableau quiz was far harder than expected. Heard how other instructors were teaching this classes, and was SO thankful I chose her! For CMIS being useless & boring, she actually taught us stuff.
The course has recently been changed and her lectures are not adequate for its difficulty. She is unprofessional, does not give clear feedback on grades, and does not use all the lecture time despite the fact that the majority of the class was struggling. She would criticize the class for their grades while refusing to help them improve. Avoid!
Terrible teacher and seems not a very person, especially to Canadian born students. Just run, avoid her!!!
Dong is the best option for cmis3350 however she has alot of little assignments worth 2.5% throughout the semester. The classes and boring to sit through. Exams are open book which is great. Group project at the end of the term. Easy marker
Great course to ruin your GPA. This course is so scattered, learning software while learning random stuff about data completely irrelevant to your major. TONS OF ASSIGNMENTS way too much effort for such little return. Dong also hides key marking information that students uncover after or right as the assessment is happening with 0 forewarning.
Way better in person than online. Gives very good, helpful feedback. If you miss an assignment during the semester, you can hand it in during the last week with a 10% penalty. Very accommodating with schedules. You can get away with a lot of laziness, but you do get enough rope to hang yourself with, so be careful.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM about her is the fact that she does not reply to her emails at all or if she does, you usually have to send a couple of follow up emails just to get a response out of her. Not accessible outside of class at all and thats what frustrates me, considering the fact that CMIS is a class where you need constant feedback all the time.
Dong is very well organized, and wants you to learn. A lot of the material is available through ppt's.
I don't understand her "teaching." I have to post on our discussion board, provide a peer-review, provide explanations on Tablleu problems to my classmates. Did get who is a student? Who is an instructor? Why I am paying my tuition as she is not teaching at all, she is learning from us and getting paid. So, funny :)
Terrible teacher; schedules a Term Exam when minimal work has been taught in class. Her review guide for the Term Exam is so broad, how are we know, specifically, what to study for if the review guide has 15 short answer questions per chapter? Inconsistent in regards to replying to emails, as well.
Extremely nice lady, but her teaching style tends to be kind of dry; her students never really seem engaged in what is being taught. Decent instructor - I just wish her Review Guide for the Term Exam wasn't so broad, she should have gave us hints as to what chapters to focus on, as studying every little detail for each chapter can get really heavy
This is the worst teacher Ive had. Going to her lectures is pointless. Make sure to thoroughly read the textbook to prepare for her exams. There are group projects that require a lot of effort for little marks. Dong does a poor job of explaining what is required of us to get a good grade. Avoid at all costs!
I'm so disappointed with Dong as a professor. Every time I attend class, I instantly regret it. She is not at all informative... Rambles about irrelevant topics. When you ask her a question about something that you're unsure of, she gets confused and doesn't give you a straight answer. Even if you pay attention to her lectures, you don't learn...
Attending Dong's classes are a complete waste of time, most of her students are on their phones throughout her lectures and are not engaged at all. Dong doesn't clearly explain group projects and is a very tough grader; she will take marks off of our projects if you don't regularly attend her classes. Her class has been a terrible experience.
Worst prof I have ever had. Dong is rude and ignores questions. Her lectures are pretty much the most annoying waste of time I've ever experienced. She gives little to no feedback and no instruction on group projects. She also overloads you with work to the point that it's not possible to do well. Hate her.
Dong very often makes mistakes when explaining certain tasks, and doesnt end up taking the time to explain the correct way afterwards. Dong is a a rude instructor, who is a very difficult marker; her class is the biggest waste of time, but its important to show up as she is an instructor that will grade harder if you dont show up regularly.
She is literally one of the worst instructors I have ever had at NAIT. She will not explain things clearly and if you ask for help he is rude about it and will tell you to read the book. You will not understand anything in her class and it is a waste of time. If you don't attend her class she will literally try to fail you.
Good instructor. Very caring to students. Definitely recommend her for this subject. Good subject to boost your GPA.
Dong was an absolute joke of a professor for a joke of a class. Basically everyone in the class got identical marks regardless of effort or class knowledge (60-70% for everything). She teaches very little, her online lectures are impossible to understand and she does not expand on the course material at all. Expect to struggle if you get Dong
Easy marker and good instructor for CMIS 3350. Open book exams which is great.
Yo imma be straight with chu GET OUT OF HER CLASS. Worst professor at nait. IF I COULD GIVE HER A 0 OUT OF 5 I WOULD.
Awful prof avoid if possible does not give proper directions and then hands out terrible marks if you did not follow the directions she didnt take the time to discuss especially frustrating do to the abundance of group work making up 45% of the overall grade would not recommend to anybody.
Probably one of the worst instructors I have had at NAIT . GET OUT OF HER CLASS, Save yourself the struggle. She teaches very little, Expect to struggle if you get Dong. She makes this class 100% more difficult than it has to be and compared to my other friend in other CMIS class she overloads her student with useless assignments.
Dong does not explain anything clearly AT ALL. This results in students getting marks docked for "doing it wrong". Another thing is the fact that she seems clueless when reviewing your assignment. She will dock marks on your assignments because she is unable to use basic common sense. If you have her as a prof. DROP. THAT. CLASS.
She is a horrible instructor, she doesn't explain anything and when we do excel projects she just pulls up the answers and is like "do it like this". She doesn't explain anything clearly and when you ask her to explain something its useless. If you miss one class she won't explain anything to you because you missed a class. Just stay away from her.
Dong does not explain things very well. She is funny and nice enough, but if you have something come up during the course, DO NOT expect any help. She responds with sarcasm to students asking for clarifications and acts like everyone is trying to take advantage of her. Overall she is knowledgeable about CMIS topics, but unwilling to share it.
Here's the deal with Dong. She genuinely cares about her students & does a wonderful job of sharing her knowledge to facilitate their academic enhancement. With that being said, she expects the student to put in time & effort into learning the concepts, & cannot hold 40 different sets of hands at once. She is funny, & her classes are entertaining.
Dong is a terrible "professor", she likes talking about everything and nothing about information systems. I found that she is benefiting from students more than she is giving back ("teaching") to students. Also, be ready for many surprises on the exams (especially on the final) and unfair students' treatment (Asians favourable). Don't recommend!
I beg you not to take this woman's class. She simultaneously states that she religiously uses the textbook for our mountain of homework, but then when we asked her where exactly in these two books the answers lie, she'd talk in circles to avoid answering. Every single chapter was harder than it should have been because of her lack of clarity.
Gotta practice tableau in order to be successful in this class
I beg of you to not take her CMIS classes. Such a simple class that she made to be like the hardest course on this planet for no reason. You have to do CMIS software work AND textbook readings for no reason and gives absolutely ZERO help in either situation. Don't bother going to class, watch videos on youtube and you'll learn so much more.
She doesn't teach the class, she tries learning the class as she is supposed to be teaching. If you need help she tells you not to email her. Had technical difficulty and it took 5 emails and 3 weeks to get help. Reading reviews on here seems like she is making the good reviews herself as they are all similar. If you want to learn DO NOT TAKE Dong.
Here is the thing about Dong, she is completely incompetent. She has no idea what she is talking about or teaching (ever), she doesn't respond to e-mails until it is too late, she doesn't answer questions correctly and fellow classmates mark our work without her review. I only put "Get Ready to Read" because you'll have to teach yourself the class.
I don't recommend her for any courses. Dong is confusing as a teacher and quite messy as a person; she likes creating tensions between students and groups, no guidelines, no response on e-mails. Dong doesn't MIS subject/course, Tableau, Python, HTML and she is lying to all about her knowledge. Finally, she is making fun of falling students.
Lectures and Notes mostly useless. Notes do not include everything in the textbook, but don't worry, you wont be tested on anything about the theory anyways. Every exam is just based on case study's in the textbook. So if you don't read about "so and so company", you won't be able to pass an exam. Group projects useless in terms of exam knowledge.
The classes I had with her I would consider them being on the easyier side. That aside, I thought she was a horrible teacher. If I had to equate her teaching methods it would be to that of a kindergarden teacher. She gave me the wrong grade at the end of the semester cause her math was wrong? I had to exaplain at least 5 times till she clued in.
Dong is the worst instructor I had at NAIT. Specifically, she is trying to fail local students and hates them. If you ask any questions, help you will be in trouble. Avoid at any cost; save your GPA and mental health. If you take her, I wish you good luck!
There is an unnecessary amount of group projects. Projects are all worth about 5% each but the work required for most of them feels like a 10-15% project which is frustrating. Project explanations in class vs actual project instructions on paper are not the same. Marking is too subjective. No clear guidelines as to where marks are lost.
Dong is the best instructor I've ever had at NAIT. Easy course with easy-going professor, very relaxed atmosphere in class, easy exams and group work. Dong is better than any Canadian instructor. I recommend her for all courses at NAIT. A+++
Dong has changed my faith in good people and undermined the entire value system I was grown with... Simply, don't recommend her (she is dishonest and likely using teaching position for own agenda).
The Worst and I mean worst teacher I have ever had in my education career. Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dong was a good professor and knows programming very well. The course itself is pretty heavy as an elective so beware of this course if you're looking to get an easy A+ it won't happen. However, if you like doing programming and attending F2F classes this would be a good class to learn some programming skills.
in cmis1101, it's all depend on you cuz it's excel, word, and access. you just have to do eveything by yourself. instructor been helpful if i had quesitons.
When I signed up for this class I was told that we will be working with sponsors to gain insight into data analysis. Not only we were not informed that we have to scramble for data and come up with a fictitious project we were left clueless with no guidance. For the price we had to pay for the course, it definitely was a waste.
This was the best online course I've ever taken. Dong did a great job of offering instruction and support in a variety of ways, and was always available for questions or feedback. Assignments started to take longer to get back towards the end of the semester, but other than that she was fantastic. Overall a great teacher :)
She is one of the best instructors for Data 2210. Make sure you complete everything before deadline as you will not get any extensions. Easy to approach via email or Moodle discussion form.
So much workload, but they all seem so unnecessary.
She is ok but you have to wait for the grades longer. In the beginning she posted everything on time. But at the back end she didn't post any grades and students ask her for grades. She said she will do this week. Then after 2 weeks again we asked she said this weekend she will do. But did not, if you cannot do don't give any dates.
Does not know how to teach at all I would go to the extent of saying she does not have the capabilities to be an instructor. She lacked the skill to "teach" and her lessons are confusing, clustered, and careless. You can expect the course to be divided into 20 different assignments which she expects you to understand by yourself with no direction
Simply awful. I would avoid Dong at all costs. For some reason she felt the need to break her course down into an overwhelming amount of 1% assignments and then makes each of those a minimum 45 minute time commitment. Sorry, but this is ridiculous. Would NOT recommend.
She is literally outsourcing her job to students; you must assess other 3 other student's work for every assignment, and 5% of your total grade is contributions to answering other student's questions. In addition, she doesn't know much about the topic she is teaching and talks in a condescending manner if you email her to ask questions.
Dong's class was not set up in a way conductive for learning. There are tons of assignments with video walkthroughs that make it dead easy to complete, but the assignments don't teach why you're doing it, just how to do it. Be prepared to spend hours marking your classmates work, as it's required.
She will say she has an issue with her computer and leave you to do it yourself after three weeks of the first semester. After that, she will ghost you and make the quiz unnecessarily difficult, and you will get 60%. I took most of the data course, and it was the first time I have considered this course assessed unfairly.
She wants to make this course competitive with students (they assess each other), and grading takes almost two months. If this way of teaching is accepted as education, then everyone can teach this course because there is no teaching. Exams are MCQ only. She does not even look into this course.
This class had potential, but I disliked Dong's approach. She arrived without Tableau installed, relying on the cloud, which led to disorganization, confusion, and made the class hard to follow. This set a chaotic tone for the semester, and I often felt I had to teach myself everything outside of class to keep up.
Dong abandoned the course for 7 weeks and nothing was graded for the first 12 weeks. Needlessly difficult MC exams for the first half semester. Lots of content that did not add value within the lectures. Inconsistent correspondence with the class throughout the semester. Marked easy for the coding assignments. Had potential if she was present.
Dong is doesn't understand all that you need to learn is the correct key strokes to show what you need. This course, especially when taught by her, felt overly convoluted. I don't personally understand much more about tableau than I did previously. The course feels like filler, and she feels like it is too, which is apparent by her manner.
Some MC exams were about the history and theory of data visualization which was a pointless and a waste of time. Aside from that she is a good prof. I know someone here said she was gone for 7 weeks. She was gone for 3weeks because her mom died. She was active by email, gave us online lectures, and found us subs.
I took Data 2210, 3320, 3250, 3350, and coding myself. All data courses were easy for me A+ over 95%. They were just to fill up my credits. But the data 3320 course by Dong Ye was really awful. The teaching method was confusing, and I wonder what students without basic knowledge could gain from this course??
I don't understand why she gets so much hate as I took my Data courses with her (3350,3750,3960) and tbh she is one of the best profs i've known. understandable, caring and easy to work/talk to. you get extra credits for anticipating during class too!
I did an online class with her and it was scheduled for 1hour and 50 min. We rarely went past 1 hour and 10 min. So you lose a lot of class time that you paid for. She goes too fast in class and mainly tells you to rewatch the recording. Attending live class is almost pointless. She is nice and easy to talk to but not overly helpful.
