Doesn't know what she is teaching well enough to teach effectively
Unorganized, not prepared for class. Goes way too fast.
Reject from the movie "FARGO"
Moved too fast
No Comments
nuttier than a pile of squirrel****s
Knows her stuff, but does move fast. You have to do your homework in this class!!!!
Altepeter moves way to fast and never really teaches you anything. She just went over the problems that we should have done by that day. My youngest sister could do that and still have the class like her. But not Altepeter.
Way too fast to let anything sink in and I think that it might be a good idea for Altepeter to learn the information herself before teaching students.
Vary unorganized. Always late to class and late ending class. My favorite quote: Altepeter: "Does anyone have any questions?" Sudent:"How do you get the second column in the chart?" Altepeter:"We don't have time for that? Moving on..."
homework was very time consuming! tests were hard and you definately need to study! i'm so glad to be done with this class! her directions were confusing and she wasnt very helpful when you needed to ask her questions
Can get easily sidetracked at times and rambles, but overall fairly comprehensible
She really likes her Excel. Talks real fast.
If you go to class for the most part and stay caught up with assignments you should get an A or at least a high B. It is quite a bit of work, but you'll learn alot.
As Charles Barkley would say "Terrible Terrible"
just pathetic
Material is useful but there is a help button for it. TONS of homework. Professor not easy to understand.
Frustrating if you don't have 5 hrs for each assign. Class title Acct 218 misleading. Teaches (or attempts to) some things that have nothing to do with Acct. Should be taught by someone else, but UND only she teachesit. Assign.s can be very confusing. Youll get to the last page and be glad to be done only find there is an hour+ of work (Nightmare)
Donna is an awesome teacher. She cares about students and puts a ton of time into this class. That being said, this class is a lot of work; at least five hours of homework for each assignment. Overall, I feel like a learned a lot in a very practical class and I credit it her for it. She seriously deserves recognition for her work ethic.
Lectures are hard to stay awake during. you will probably end up teaching yourself more than anything. extremely hard to follow along with. Wiley will teach you more than she ever could.
She's really helpful if you actually go to class and pay attention. I have to admit though, that with a computer right in front of you its hard to pay attention in class but when you do she helps out a lot! Assignments do take about 1-2 hours each but they're really not that difficult.
teaching yourself in her classes is mandatory. not a fan of her style at all.
This only applies for ACCT 218. This lady is pretty crazy, it's all trivial tests and not much learning. I hardly ever go to class, but they have nice computer setups so sometimes it's worth it. The class is A LOT OF WORK, however if you are willing to do every assignment she gives, you should have no problem getting an A or B, the class is easy.
This class seems to be notorious for being extremely difficult, but I felt that prof Altepeter was very helpful. She was always willing to help with any questions I had before or after class, and in class she went over all of the charts and examples in the book. I would recommend her for this class. She is tough but fair.
Mrs. Altepeter is a great teacher. Many people like to complain that Acct 218 is too much work but this class is vital to your success as an accounting major. Some of the assignments are long but as long as you don't wait till the night before they are due to even start them you will be fine. This class is not for procrastinators. Tests are easy.
hardest class ever, the tests are 2 1/2 hours long but should be around 4 hours. homework assignments are super long and take up to 7 hours on some. If your a fast learner and excel is easy to remember you should do find though.
She is a fantastic teacher, gets a bad rap for having to teach tougher courses though. 218 is a lot of work, but she is always willing to help whenever you need it, she is one of the best instructors I have had at UND and wish there were more like her.
She's awful! Actually told us her job is not to teach us, but it is our job to teach ourselves, she's just there to help confusion, which she doesn't actually do. Class is awkward because she's very scatter brained and thinks she's funny. Least favorite prof I've had at UND
Prof. Altepeter is a very good professor, she can come off as eccentric as first, but really knows the material and has a real passion for teaching. Is excellent at answering any questions and makes sure the student understands. One of my favorite professors so far in the accounting field.
Her updates on assignments make it 10x more confusing Asked her for help on a problem I was having and she sat around for awhile while I explained what I was having a problem with then said I went over this in class today so I'm not gonna explain that again. Then she left and I was just like what the.... Don't like her
Donna knows A LOT about excel, to the point that it is annoying. Her lectures are boring, and it sounds like you're listening to your grandmother brag about how much she knows about computers. The assignments take about 8-10 hours a piece to complete and are worth nothing compared to the tests, which are fairly difficult.
Have fun, is all I have to say. This class has about 10 hours of out of class homework a week. The assignments take forever and the tests are reasonable hard. She acts like she knows everything about excel. She doesn't help you with everything as she wants you to figure it out on your own. If there is any other teacher take it with them.
If you try the problems before class you will get much more out of her lectures than if you show up unprepared. Read the book and do the exercises and the class won't be too hard. Donna isn't my favorite professor but also isn't anywhere near my least favorite. She's tough but fair. Put in an effort and it'll pay off when it comes time for exams.
Directions on "add-ons" to assignments are vague with poor grammar. She even stated that she herself doesn't know how to perform some of the content. VERY condescending. E-mailed for help a few times, responses were limited and unhelpful. Everything has to be her verbiage, you can't use more efficient formulas, limited explanation, etc.
The course covers almost everything learned in ISBC 117 within the first few weeks, after that everything is new. Assignments are relatively long, but she usually goes over them in class the day before they are due so it is worth it to have them done early. Grading is fair, but can be confusing for bigger assignments. Fast paced, learned a lot!
one of the worst teachers i have ever had the displeasure of having. she assigns homework for each class, which isn't bad, but when she goes over it don't expect to get any help from her. When you ask a question she responds with "We don't have time to go over this" or "we already learned that, I'm not going over it again" Don't take her class.
Donna is terrible at actually teaching a lesson. My first day in her class that we actually did a lesson she literally messed up the problems we were doing and let it wrong and simply said 'oh well'. She literally makes the students do most of the work for her even though we don't know how to do the new material. I taught myself the first chapters.
Worst prof i've ever had in my entire life. get ready to spend 12-18 hours a week in the lab at gamblethat's not including time spent studying for her tests. I would suggest taking this class in the summer so you don't have to juggle 218 with four other classes during the school year. Good Luck and I'm sorry if you have to take this class.
Sorry in advance for the suffering you will go through this semester. RIP to your social life and anything else you wanted to do.
Get this class out of the way as soon as you can. You will be doing 10-20 hours of homework every single week. That's not an exaggeration. Homework is tedious and confusing at times but you will learn a lot. You will hate this class while you are in it but will look back and see it as one of the most important classes you take in college
Very involved w/ online class, but overwhelms students with resources, lengthy updates, vague/confusing hints, & implies everything optional must be done to pass the tests. Doesn't teach the class (no lecture videos). Expects students to understand the textbook & the overwhelming amounts of practice problems. Try doing problems w/o being taught.
There is such a thing as too many resources. Providing so many resources is helpful to a fault. It becomes overwhelming. I appreciate her willingness to help when I ask for it, but often times I've ended up more confused after. I wish for lecture videos to refer to so I clearly understood what SHE is looking for, not the broad textbook.
Take this class and only this class in summer, and you will have plenty of time for all the reading and assignments. Don't skip lectures because the information she covers in classes would guide you through assignments. Yes, there would be a lot of hw, but without the intensive practice, it is impossible to actually excel at Excel.
10/10 would not recommend. Terrible jokes (that are barely even jokes?) but she will laugh at them every single time. eventually her laughter will become the equivalent to Chinese water torture . If she happens to pop up on your schedule, for the sake of your entire family, change classes or just drop out! If you don't, ask a priest to pray for you
She goes way too fast during lectures and no one has any clue what she is saying but instead of explaining it she just says it's easy. She doesn't review the material before class and tends to get the answer wrong herself. Also it always seems like she is panicking. Very hard to have respect for her.
Simply, The worst ever!! No exaggeration, she basically wants you to fail. The HW & tests are extra tough/Long. I still don't understand her grading system, and her favorite sentence " I counted it wrong!" for the smallest mistakes. She does't know the material well, in fact, she makes a lot of mistakes. Since of humor? beyond Expired!
Incredible class, the skills learned from 218 are unprecedented by traditional ACCT courses (200, 201, 300, 301, etc.). Ms. Altepeter has built an outstanding course with the objective to prepare students for a career in accounting. This course allows UND students to compete with UMN and other top schools' graduates for Big 4 positions.
Donna talks in circles all day long. If you can't teach yourself everything you need to know, then do not take her class. If you try to follow along with her lectures you get even more confused. If you have a question don't ask her because she will tell you to figure it out. Good luck taking her class.
Donna is caring and would walk you through a problem you have in Excel. It is important to go to class and take notes because she would demonstrate the steps to finish your homework. You are going to be tech-savvy after this class because her lecture covers so many topics: functions, charts, windows OS, and visual basic programming for macro.
She's out to make you fail. She will make mistakes grading your assignments. The assignments take 10-12 hrs/wk. The lectures aren't helpful as she can't remember what she's talking about or has already talked about. However, the class does give you a competitive edge in the accounting field because of its comprehensive nature.
She provides 10 - 15 hours of homework assignments each week. It is not possible to use a Macbook for the excel problems as it is so different to Windows. Would not recommend this class unless you want no life and an average grade to show for it.
Awful. that's it
I took this as an online class because taking it in-person isn't worth the time. Donna now posts online lectures, contrary to other reviews. She assigns a few homeworks a week, which are pretty difficult if you're not an accountant. The exams are heavily weighted on your grade, and fun fact: my class' first exam average was a 35%. Let that sink in.
Donna gets a bad rap, and I get it-but she's not awful, and this class WILL help you. The main issue with 218 is the time it consumes-the content itself isn't hard if you give yourself time to actually do the homework, rather than putting it off and trying to copy someone else's. If you have a Mac, install Windows 10(free from UND). You'll survive.
Donna does not help you figure anything out. If your class goes online it is honestly a nightmare.
This class was the death of me. I spend on average 20-25 hours each week on this class outside of lecture. I stopped going to her lectures because she spoke nonsense but she does give extra credit for participation. Some of her assignments were over 20 pages long, and she gives 2-hour exams every 2 weeks (6 total). Wouldn't recommend.
Donna made it seem like the class was going to be easy and effortless, but the assignments are a mile long, she's terrible at giving you feedback, and she is slow at replying to your emails. She will also be rude in emails if she feels as if you do not understand the material.
Attend lecture Easy bonus points (at least for online). She goes over hw assignments during class and gives away answers all the time. If you're online, have your phone out to take pictures of the equations. Get homework done early otherwise it sucks!! Tests are very hard, but she curves it a lot. Possible to get an A!
Absolutely not. I took this class fully online and damn. I honestly don't think that this class should be taken online. Tests are also very hard. There was only one paper that was fine, but you will be teaching yourself everything.
I can't speak for the other courses she teaches, but I felt 201 wasn't terrible, contrary to other reviews here. Do the homework and read the textbook; it's that easy. She also gives you practice problems with all the answers and those are what shows up on the tests. A little tough, considering you have to put in the work, but relatively easy class
Terrible class, I would never take it again she basically makes it impossible to pass unless you spend 15+ hours of work a week. Along with that she really gives no leeway for anything is beyond strict. I've never had a worse teacher in the 15 years I've been in school.
Worst teacher ever, should be fired TODAY. Does not even know how to use excel herself. Expects you to know things she does not even know how to do. Miserable person.
10-15 hours of Excel homework a week minimum. Lectures are pointless, but she offers bonus points here and there so I drag myself to them. Really strict grader, so be prepared to lose points on some small things. ACCT300 on its own is difficult, but Donna makes the class much more miserable being the instructor. No idea how her rating is so high.
Enjoy being told these are "baby puzzles and I don't undertand why you don't understand" when asking for guidance with little to no explaination to where you are going wrong on a quiz or exam. You'll just be told to review the material with a poor reference since you are not supposed to "rely on the textbook."
Posts lengthy updates that are harder to follow than her lectures. Not very understanding when it comes to outside emergencies and was very rude when asking to take the quize ONE day later,. Only reason I learned something was by ignoring updates and not asking questions because that made everything more confusing and feel horrible about yourself
You know it's a bad sign when the cengage Excel homework is more effective in teaching compared to her lectures. Is very rude when answering questions in class. I always have the feeling that I have more questions than answers after I ask a question. This class is a full-time job. Minimum 10-25 hours a week of homework.
Enrolled late on the 2nd day of the semester after being on the waiting list, received a lengthy email the next day about how I was already too far behind in the course. Easiest withdraw decision of my life, take this course with an actual human instead of AltepeterGPT.
Donna is a terrible teacher. She responds to most questions with a demeaning tone, rambles, grades harshly, expects you to complete assignments that require at least 10 hrs of work for the average student, and expects, essentially, perfection. In order to succeed in this class, you have to be an expert at excel w/ no outside responsibilities.
This class is brutal and unreasonably time consuming. Lectures were useless for the most part. The HW is usually enough exam prep. On the bright side, this class will make you a wizard in excel, which is helpful for internships and beyond. This class is rough, but you can do it. When all is said and done, you'll be glad you took it.
Instead of actually teaching students, she drags them for not understanding the material right away. Encourages students to work together, yet docks points when they do. She doesn't make any sense in emails, sending them in the middle of the night and being unable to reach unless you come to campus at whatever time the witch wants to be here.
Lectures are useless, connect hw will teach you everything and she changes her tests to be multiple choice because she can't keep a grader with the two classes she teaches. That should say enough about how much she assigns for no reason. She changes the syllabus with no warning besides a midnight email. Good luck.
Run, just run, do not take this class unless you really want to be an accounting major. She is a horrible person who likes making people miserable, shows favoritism, docks petty points if she does not like you, and will make your life undeniably dismal if you take this class. Please do not take this class unless you have to. She should be fired.
Donna Altepeter is a terrible teacher/professor, by far the worst out of the 20 or so professors I've had, she's not empathetic and used the term "baby puzzles" to describe the homework (it's not). I stopped paying attention to her lectures after the first couple of weeks; she was no help and confused me more. Definitely has a superiority complex.
The whole course is basically based off of tests so if you aren't a good test taker I would not recommend. Extremely hard grader, and doesn't have lectures.
The people on here on RMP are way overreacting for 300. It is a hard class but I have gotten an A, and it hasn't been to bad. Just do the work, its hard and not fun at times but if the people in the comments spent as much time doing the work rather then complaining they would have A's too. Also I have never spent 10 hours, 5 at max for tougher part
Donna Altepeter gives all material required to pass the class with an A. There are graded assignments and ungraded assignments. The graded assignments will give you a good understanding of the material. The ungraded assignments (1 for each chapter) are literally outlines for what the quizzes and exams will be. just do the work and the class is easy
Prepare for the hardest 16 weeks of your life. I took this class twice. The first time I needed to withdraw after the failing the first test. The second
I had to take this class twice, after withdrawing the first time. Don't take any other hard class with this one. Also, be ready for 15 hours outside of class. If school comes easy to you it won't take that long, but otherwise you may need to send emails several times a week for clarification. I felt like quitting many times. Just don't give up.
Watch her lecture videos, study the textbook, and do her practice problems when you have time. If you use your time wisely, do the homework, and at least try to be interested in what you are learning then you will do just fine in this class. If you don't want to do this then tough luck. She isn't the best professor but she is far from the worst.
Homework anywhere from 10 to 32 pages of directions to do in excel each week graded extremely harsh. Took an absurd amount of time outside of class to complete. Even the tests are 2 and a half hours long. Only positive to this class is that she gives some bonus points for showing up to class.
If you're hands-on, you'll have an easier time, tough class either way. Gives back some bonus points for showing up, follow directions on HW to the letter & work on them on class b/c they take a long time. Get a second computer monitor, trust me. She yaps but some of it is helpful, show up to class and try. You'll be glad you took it, u can do it.
I would strongly not recommend that you take this class with this professor. While it is definitely possible to do well in it and receive a good grade, it will be very challenging. It would be a good idea to find a tutor, or someone who is able to properly teach the course material to you.
Tests/homework are detailed, you need every point in the class from the start. Homework = headache from reading 10-20 pages of literal nothing, suggestion putting chucks in AI to summarize so dont get stuck/frustrated. Go to class = 1/2pt EC. Take in Spring Semeste bc less going on on campus. Helpful if going into excel related degree.
There is no grace and is filled with no heart towards others. Fine to talk to but talks to you like your dumb. Filled with the spirit of harassment.
A lot of work, most of what is taught is irelvant. The information used taught would be useful 5-10 years ago. It's a hard course and she makes it harder.
Horrible professor. She talks to you like you're stupid. When you ask for help, she will laugh at you and say, "you should know how to do this" and then tell you to use copilot. Be prepared to read irrelevant dialog in her 20-page directions and sit in front of a computer for 12+ hours a week.
The lectures for this course consist of her talking to the class like we are "unintelligent". She expects you to know everything after doing an assignment (which take 10+ hours every single week). Overall has been the most stressful class and semester I have ever had in my life, from weekly assignments and TOUGH exams, all stemming from ACCT 300.
