Great teacher, I would always recommend!! She's clear about what she wants and expects in her class.
Replies to all your email questions. Very clear & helpful. Not easy but not too hard, very challenging - you do actually learn things. Very smart, wrote the text book she & most others use (In Sparks). Very understanding & always has a smile. :)

Her directions are not clear and grades very hard on the papers. Lots of hw and papers due in a short period of time. No extra credit or any quizes availble to bump up your grade. Not a fair grader too.
Gives a lot of homework. Expects you to really think and analyze what you've read. Getting an A on essays was a challenge. She is really nice and helpful though. You will learn a lot.
This is s challenging but very interesting class. It's true, she does expect a bit of writing and she expects her students to be able to analyze the books read in class...but it IS a college course. I would definitely recommend taking this class!
Work is not too hard, class is very interesting and fun. She's also very helpful and will give you tips on how to improve essays before turning it in!
She does grade papers a little hard, but is extrememly fair. She knows when you put time into the papers. She's a great teacher, helpful and supportive on a 1 on 1 basis. I recommend her!
Really great lady

If you don't like to read a crapload of books then don't take this class. Lots of papers to write, lots of lecture/discussion. Rough attendance policy. Fun topics though...disney fans/harry potter fans should not take this class.

lots of homework
There's a lot to read, but it's all at the middle grade school level. Show up to class and listen in on the lectures and conversations, you can't go wrong, it's an english class so of course you have to write essays, for all those students that cry about it, her grading is pretty hard but it's fair
she is so hard.
Simple, she gives you what you earn. She is extremely helpful, very clear, always upbeat in class. Overall, she's not too shabby =) I recommend her.
Super nice. Very lenient with grading. Just participate.
A very nice teacher. She really cares about her students and seems to actually help you improve your writing skills. The homework are not that hard. It's mostly reading, which are pretty easy. Just participate and do the essay rewrites and you'll be find. If you're require to take Eng. 99 take hers; trust me, it will be to your benefit.
Be ready to work!
she is great if you know what is going on in class and keep up with the work
barnard is such a cool teacher! she's really helpful and she's really nice and down to earth. her work is pretty easy and she doesn't give you a lot of essays or a lot of reading. TAKE HER CLASS
she is definately a hard professor but very interesting. i'm not talking about her niece either. just do the reading, the essays (she gives specific directions, so follow them and you'll get at a decent grade), no test (just a lot of writing). i'd take her class again. she was funny and blunt. speaks her mind!
This is not high school. Stop picking on people to participate when they don't want to. Let them volunteer instead.
this professor is great. she treats you like an adult and her classes arent boring. she's a hard grader but then again she's only preparing you for english 100. you actually learn something from her classes!
I really enjoyed this class. the assignments weren't easy, but they weren't too tough. she's exteremly helpful, and she has a GREAT sense of humor. she's doesn't treat her students like children, she's fair and interesting. if you want to have a fun english class... this one is wonderful. :)
I thought she was great. A hard grader, yes, but still this is an upper-division English course. She was super helpful. Loved her.
Class is run like a book club, which is both good and bad. It is a really comfortable and welcoming environment, and it is clear Donna knows what she's talking about. However, some of the class discussions drag on when students aren't sure what to talk about, and this can get annoying. But as long as you do your work, you'll be fine.
she went on and on over the same subject. she even laughed at her own jokes while no one did. its pain in her class.
she's one of the best teachers on my lists! this class is not that easy though. You really have to really pay attention in class and work hard. She quickly responds to your email when you have questions and things like that. very helpful. i sure did learn a lot of writing techniques from her class. GREATLY RECOMMENDED! =)
Old Brit Lit is very dry, and I think she realizes it, which was why she just tried to plow through alot of the stuff. Her papers weren't terribly bad, finals okay, but the material was so boring. Most of the time a couple of students would just try to talk just to kill time and leave class. She tried to make it exciting, but the readings failed.
This teacher is great. She is helpful in any way that you need it. I don't understand Brit Lit, but she helped a lot. Her grading is a little hard, but she is willing to help you with the paper before it is due (read draft & give suggestions) and she allows you do write one paper over at the end of the semester. Recommend anything she teaches.
Donna is a fantastic and fun teacher.
i was not looking forward to english, especially a 99 class, which i thought was a mistake. i'm glad i chose to take donna though, she was very straight forward with everything & honestly made me feel a lot more confident about my work. take her class.
Going into this class I was expecting someone boring and plain, but she's an amiable, helpful teacher. She really wants her students to succeed. I had to write about 5 or 6 papers, which gradually progressed in size and difficulty throughout the semester, but they weren't too hard. The reading is easy and remember to annotate. Definitely recommend.
there are so many choices out there dont take dis class...wen u got question and try to ask her she turns back on u...dont waste ur time....she bitxhes almost about everything...
She's pretty chill. helps you out a lot. her assignments are easy as well.
If you are looking for an easy A this is not it. It's not impossible but you got to work. I hated english and she taught me how to write and i know it will help me later in any class. You want to learn how to write? take her class.
Donna is a great teacher! As long as you do the work (which, by the way, is REALLY simple: reading/anotating and a couple essays that are fun to do) and attend class you'll get an A. She is awesome at making sure every single person understands and makes an effort to support her students. If you really want to learn & enjoy english, take her class.
She's an outstanding teacher especially if you have an interest in writing. She offers every opportunity to succeed if less than interested even taking emails of your work to offer constructive criticism. Highly recommended.
Donna is a good teacher, but grades hard. If you take this class, make sure you do all of the work. I learned alot and she was always willing to help me.
Very fun and outgoing teacher and laid back in the beginning then cracks down to buisness in mid semester...she was a very helpful teacher. I learned so many writing techniques and different writing styles. Class was never too boring. Do the hw(psss its really not that hard) just anotating and essays. Greatttt class! Great teacher...actually enjoye
BEST TEACHER EVER! Yes, she grades hard but if you do the work (there's a lot but its not hard work at all) she appreciates that and will go above and beyond to help her students to understand. And she brings treats on the last day of class!! Loved her! A+++
If anyone here is smart then they will listen to me. She is not a easy teacher. If you are not good in English then you shouldn't take her because it gonna be hard class. Require pass essay to pass class
She a very hard teacher. If you aren't good in English then you shouldn't take her.
Class was fun, really opened my eyes to children's literature. Test were easy if you actually studied. Essays were not too hard but never got an A for anything. :( Being in class is mandatory!
I JUST DONT LIKE THIE LADY. DONT TAKE HER SHE IS NOT WORTHED AT ALL..I HATE HER!!! GRADES REALLY HARD.VERY PICKY.
Intelligent, treats students like adults and selects interesting readings. Reasonable and fun assignments and a fair grader. Highly recommend.
She is the best english professor i've had. Her lectures are fun and easy to understand...also helpful. She teaches you alot and she is always willing to help you by e-mail or office hours. She is also cute so the class is never boring...
I love her! She is so helpful and I always enjoyed attending her class. I highly recommend her if you're looking to improve in your writing skills. She will get on your case if you're lacking on reading assignments or essays, but it's tough love.
DO NOT TAKE HER! she is by far my worse teacher. everyone who commented her as a "great" teacher, was probably one of her pets. Her grading is very hard, and yes very picky. Whats the point on doing all the out of class essay if she only decide if you pass her class with the IN class essay
DO NOT TAKE HER! i took her class and got very bad grades on my essay..so she failed me. took another teacher..turned in similar essays..got A's..and that teacher said those papers were REALLLY GOOD! Barnard just grades very unfairly..probably becasue she doesnt want most of her students to suceed and work at del taco like she did.
Has 1 or 2 students she favors out of the class. Has mood swings. Grades unfairly, isn't clear about what will be on tests. Snooty attitude about what is/isn't literature. Most of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is BS but since she's an English professor, that works in her favor. Don't take her if you can help it.
she is an awesome teacher. I really enjoyed this class. You learn so much to prepare for the engl 100 class....Easy A if you do all the work and work hard on the essay
v the people who rated low obviously are pathetic. hence the poor grammer and awful remarks.. anyways she is a great teacher i passed with a C failed the final.. but overall i did ok on my essays and read some the readings.. i recommend her
Best class I took this semester! The books and films are facinating, the commentary she gives is inciteful. The papers and discussion questions are straight forward. She doesn't tolerate slackers and people who rant on about nothing, so as long as you do the work, take good notes, and contribute to the class you will pass with an A.
Pretty much the best professor for English. I'm not a big "writer" but she made it easy, fun to write. I have learned so much from her. You only have to buy one little book, 5 essays (3 outside, 2 in class). She is very down to earth. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Pretty easy I really enjoyed made everything easy :) Take her class
Man, Donna taught me so much. She has such incredible insight into the literature and is very receptive to students' ideas. Donna is very stubborn in her belief that there is no good modern literature, especially for children so dont get offended if she hates your favorite book. This woman really cares about the art of composition and interpretatio
If you want to have an easy way out then don't take her. Need to pass one in class essay to pass class. It takes 5 absence to FAIL. She picks on students during HW discussion. If you can't answer, then you get points taken off. Grades hard on essay. If you're not good in english take someone else.
She is pretty easy if you show up to class. i loved her. she is straight foward and her essay grading are pretty easy. i got an A
I love this class, it was fun and essay. She helps you a lot if you show her your essays ahead of time and really tells you what she wants. The homework was easy and the essays were all about interesting subjects. Got an easy A, also buy the book w. a cd not w/o you use the cd in class.
Dont take her if you're not so great with essay because she will mark everything including "s" , "ed" that u leave out. She grades super hard , and you have to pass her in class in order to pass the class.
Very helpful and she's something nice to look at as well ha
she's nice but grades really hard on the essays. you have to be really good at writing essays in order to pass her class.
She's a very fun and interesting teacher. But her essays are pretty hard but it's an easy to pass class.
Awesome teacher, very helpful. She was very personal with her students and was always available after school and via email. As long as you do the homework and essays and ask for help if need, you will have no problem passing this class.
Ask q's either during class/through email & Donna's more than willing to help you out. You go thru a lot of info fairly quick, so make sure to have the books she requires. She likes interactive discussion, so come with some insight. There's 2 papers; you can rewrite 1. Simple nettings (which she teaches how to do) for HW assignments. Fun class!
wonderful teacher! coming straight from high school, you want her! she is kind and cares so much that you do will! she makes sure you can always reach her and ask anything, she is so chill! youll have fun:) we do use the book alot!!
She's a tough grader, but she makes her expectations quite clear. You need a lot of books for this class, but you can get most of them at a library, so don't sweat it. I would suggest this course to any person who is interested in teaching kids.
Great class. Donna helped me fall in love with writing again. She cares and is willing to help. Take her class, but take it seriously, work hard and you will see an improvement in your writing style.
Donna made reading something that i actually wanted to do!. She picks great novels to discuss and has engaging class discussions on them. She also creates very creative essay assignments that challenge you in a very fun way. I fell in love with writing because of this teacher. I aced her class because of her enthusiasm and commitment to our class.
Awesome teacher very funny
Donna is a fantastic English teacher... certainly one of the best at O.C.C. Her wit is infectious and passion abounds lectures. Assignments were thought provoking yet not tedious like so many teachers at the school. Just do the reading, turn in assignments, and attend test study session to have a sure fire A.
Grade is based off 2/3 short writing assignments, 2 exams, 2 essays. The hw is reading, spends entire lectures going over it and calls on ppl to share. SHE IS A HARD GRADER. I got my 1st c on an essay. Essays have weird prompts. Midterm is short answer, final is an essay. Both are easy but you need to study the guides. She's nice/smart, but boring
Although she is very helpful and clarified, her class is not easy; you must work really hard (not worthy doing that when taking ENG 99). Reading each class, 5 essays (2 in-class and 3 out-class), if you want to pass her class, you must to get at least C at each essay. Getting a grade D at 1 essay, you fail whatever you get A the rest.
Coming into this class I was pretty nervous. She can be intimidating in the beginning but overtime you get used to her. She has an awesome sense of humor, she's sarcastic & passionate about what she teaches. She was very helpful & attentive, I'm bummed she's not teaching English 100! I definitely feel fortunate to have been a part of her class.
If you are weak in English, have grammar issues, or are an international student, I would not recommend her. She is very nit picky and will mark you wrong for the tiniest mistakes. You need to get at least a C for one of the in class essays she assigns or else you will fail the class no matter how many points you already have.
Will help anyone if they ask. She will not give you A if you don't work for it.
This teacher is amazing. I hate English, but she made me enjoy it. There are a good amount of essays, but you pretty much get to choose what you write about with a little bit of guideline. She constantly is willing to help you with your essay, but if you are shy be careful, she tends to put the essay on the board so everyone can help (hides name)
She just talks about her thoughts & opinions about the stories & if you try to put your point of view she dismisses it. Also makes you annotate as if you're in high school. Makes you write things up & she "might" collect it. Passive aggressive comments. I don't know why she teaches when it's just about her & her opinions. Pointless being there.
There are usually class discussions about passages in the book and a few papers. Overall, Professor Barnard is helpful and not a hard grader. She is very approachable and has a good sense of humor. Take this class!
Worst English teacher I've ever had. Knew from day 1 I wasn't going to like her. Her class is extremely dull. She is unprepared. I love english but she ruins it. I dropped the class because I can't take another moment of listening to her dull lectures and sitting through another class with her. TERRIBLE
Straightforward and good prep for English 100. She does not BS and you cannot BS her!
To be completely honest, she is not very good at teaching and lecturing. She expects too much when there is no purpose of expectations. Reason being, she does not teach. She does not prepare you for an essay or even teach the techniques of writing a paper. She just throws online links to help you because she doesn't truly know herself.
She is a very good at telling you what is required. Make sure to participate and read the book when it is assigned. She has a good sense of humor. Essays are graded pretty heavily based on the rubric so follow it closely.
Great teacher overall! She tries very hard to work with students on what works for them and is great with feedback on essays. She has a sense of humor and interesting lectures/discussion that really made the class fun and interesting.
Donna really is something else when you get on her good side :) I failed her class the first time, so I retook it and passed with a B. It really is a great class, great discussion, great essays.
Don't take her class if you aren't good with essays, this class slapped me in the face and I struggled; she didn't do anything to help me and I feel like she didn't understand that I was stuggling with my grammar and just gave me a bad grade on my papers, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE GRAMMAR ISSUES
Donna is my fave professor at Orange Coast College, she was so helpful throughout the whole semester and she helps you with any question about homework or essays, make sure to participate and attend class all the time. She's a sweetheart and you will love her class, TAKE HER! I would definitely choose her again if I had the chance.
She can come off a little intimidating at first , but in the end she is a very sweet lady. She reads over all the papers and gives extensive feedback. She is really funny and she goes the extra mile for students. She is a proffesor you would feel comfortable telling your whole life too. I really enjoyed her as a teacher and as a person.
She comes of very cold at the begging of the semester and super strict. She is far from that. she is hilarious and is fabulous. There is a good amount of reading but it is not overwhelming. she is super helpful if you ask for it.
She is kind and means well but came off passive aggressive at times. Class consists of mostly her talking about the books we were assigned. She wants people to participate but nobody ever did. I don't know if it was the vibes from other people or the way we discussed but it was exhausting. Loved the books though. Papers easy if you pay attention.
Look she seems like a very nice lady, but when she speaks it makes no sense what so ever. She very much relies on the students to fill in the gaps. Before taking a class make sure you know how to analyze anything and everything. She can be a little rude as well but nothing bad. There are many better English professors to take at OCC.
she uses her book, wants you to buy it new. Borring, non stop talk durring the class.
This class is basically a book club. You will be required read 7-8 books and do an assignment with each of them. She is a very tough grader!!! The only bright side is there is no midterm and the only test she gives is the final. Be ready to work for your grade in this class because she's super particular.
Whether the class is online or in-person it's taught the same. I expected my Mythology class to be fun and provide some Percy Jackson vibes, but alas, no. She is a great professor and shows her passion for the subject in her lectures, but the class is boring. Everyday is read a myth, annotate, and discuss it the entire class. 1 final, some hw
Full disclosure: I took her myth class during quarantine, so it was done through zoom. She struggled to get participation, either because of zoom, the myths, or her inability to make them interesting. She didn't lack passion, but she lacked the leadership to get us involved. It's an odd thing for a student to say, but she wasn't strict enough.
I learned a lot from her. if you pit in the work she will put in the time to really help you out. I would 100% take her class again.
Her wording is always vague and everyone is always left confused. She nearly never says anything outright and always tiptoes around what she actually wants from you, as if we arent meant to just do our work were also expected to figure out what were supposed to be doing.
Rude, and often times very unhelpful to students. She'll give you feedback but will be very vague about what you're doing wrong. Half of the time you wouldn't even understand what she's saying. Will also criticize you even if you ask a simple question in class. Don't take her class if you want a teacher who actually provides useful information.
Horrible teacher! Talks down on students and has a short temper! She will yell at you! She loves to compare the class to elementary school kids whenever we have feedback for her. Were all constantly confused and her wording is always vague. Maybe shes better in person but online shes incompetent.
Shes harsh on grading along with her being very vague with directions. If you have questions about any assignments, she would refer back to the syllabus and there arent much directions on there. She uses textbooks majority of the time and theres homework almost every single day. When looking over your work, she doesnt explain much.
Donna is so helpful and willing to help anyone that asks. She has taught me to be a better writer, which I appreciate so much. Her lessons are based on the textbook. Her lectures can be a bit long and boring which can make you sleepy. This class isn't an easy class though, you have to put in the effort. However, if you ask for help, you will pass!
