lectures are boring, shes so quiet she has to use a microphone which ends up blowing kids ears out, 3 exams all with essays, and 2 outside reading books that arent that interesting.
Some of the readings were fun, but one of them was the WORST ever! She is a little bit hard on the grading but a nice person.
Had her when she was pregnant, so she didn't show up alot and was generous with points cuz she felt bad.
the lectures were VERY boring and sometimes hard to hear. she gave several quizzes that were pretty easy, but the tests are hard because of the essay portion. one book was pretty good, but the other two were boring.
Um...no...just dont. Do yourself a favor and spend your time trying to invent a time machine...youll probably learn much more about history in a cardboard time machine then I learned in this class...Ill need therapy
hard to hear her. lectures every class. easy quizs. tests r hard bc of essay question but she gives u ahead of time to look at. books r boring- dont really need to buy.
Speaks very softly. Lectures are boring but you need to go if you want a good grade in the class. Quizes are easy but tests are difficult. She expects a lot from your essays. consider yourself warned!
She's hard. She is super critical about your essays. She expects way too much it's crazy.
The class isn't overly difficult. She speaks very softly, so sit close to the front. Only two exams; midterm and final. Both scantron and essay, plus one project on a rancho or mission. Not a very hard assignment, but she is a little bit of a tough grader. Not a bad class though.
one of the worst profs at csulb. very hard to hear, boring lectures, grades hard, lame books that you have to read. take this class with anyone but her.
She whispers and she is very very dry. if you go to her office you are in for a very akward experience because its as silent as a cave.
Come on people - is it so bad that professors expect you to be able to write? Geez. She isn't hard. She's nice and fair and I thought the readings were ok.
Its hard 2 hear her. Lectures are too long and make me late 2 my next class! She criticizes the essays 2 much!!!
the worst teacher on the face of this planet. i seriously want to throw her laptop into the fire and smash her stuuuupid radio into a billion pieces...
Dr. Binkiewicz has the quietest voice I've ever heard. She finally realized this and got a mic, but you can still hardly hear her. She gives thorough lectures, although very boring. Random attendance, grades decent, the midterm sucks (she gave us 200 terms to study and chose 2 to test us on, then an essay).
She's a very hard grader when it comes to the essays. So make sure you do them ahead of time so you can make changes. Aside from that the quizzes are quite easy. sit close to the front to hear her better! takes role occasionally.
She is quiet but her lectures are as interesting as they can be for the subject matter. You do have to study and read but this is a University, not high school. She even gives at least one option for extra credit.
She is very quiet, BUT all you have to do is ask her to bring her microphone, and then you'll be fine. She is a semi-tough grader on essays, and the quizzes were not hard at all if you listened to her lectures. I recommend her for history, she makes the notes easy to see and understand.
Quiet voice, boring lectures. But always answers emails and at her office hours. Takes roll randomly, tough grader on writing assignments (keep it academic and you should be okay). Quizzes are online, so they're open book. She'll ask for suggestions/comments halfway through the semester and will actually read and follow through with them.
donna just lectures and you take notes everyday. about 7 quizes based on notes from lectures. if you go everyday and take good notes a B will be easy if you'renot a complete idot
Quiet yes, but she is fair.Grades ok, easier if you're a history major. Sit up front she's quiet! Will listen to you and help you if you ask for it. Midterm, paper, final, quizes...good easy history stuff!
Binkiewicz opened my eyes to CA history. Her class is very fun if you are willing to put effort into her class you will learn more than you expected to
sit close to the front, so that you can hear her better. Check beachboard for the quizzes, since she wotn tell you ahead of time that they are due. Read the required novels, keep your writing academic,(use lots of examples from the source.) bring a jacket to class, it gets feezign in there.. hope that was helpful.. the class in a nutshell.
As long as you go to class and take good notes you should be ok. Group project, midterm, paper, and final make up your grade. Main problem with the class is that she does not give you any guidelines for the midterm or final so you have to study everything, which adds up really fast and she only picks a few things.
Very dull and monotonous. Lectures are occasionally interesting, however far and few. She takes roll on a whim, so find people in the class who can have your back if you're not there. Hard grader.
She's nice as a person but as a teacher she's extremely difficult in grading the tests. The Written Papers, however she graded fairly easy as long as you knew what you were talking about. Her lectures are really boring and her voice is hoarse, monotone, and low which makes it hard to keep up on taking notes. Just take someone else.
Is a good professor. Do all the readings and come to class. The quizzes are open book online-very easy if you read the chaptrs. Just sit up front, she is a quiet talker. Grading on papers is tougher than most professors, but this is a upper division course and should be expected. Very helpful and nice.
It really helps to go to class and read the book but doing one or the other will do. She is easy to listen to and she usually kept my attention. She also let us out of class ten or fifteen minutes early on a regular basis
Very good professor. Midterm and finals based on overall knowledge and involve mostly regurgitation. DO not need to draw connections. Grades easily
Sit in the front because she has a low voice. Her tests are all essays no multiple choice so you have to do the reading. She does give you the study guide with the questions beforehand. The vocabulary list is ridiculously long but the subject is interesting.
She gives a ridiculously long list of terms and then puts terms on the test that aren't even included! Otherwise she is a fair grader and her class is relatively easy.
Class is boring but not very difficult. Only takes attendance sometimes and not very often. Weekly online tests which are very easy as long as you copy her powerpoint. A few papers but she is an easy grader. Tests are somewhat difficult with a few multiple choice and the rest essay but she doesnt grade very hard. Very monotonous voice
Class was not difficult. The class is set only on two papers, a midterm/final,and online quizes that are assigned evrey other week. It s preety easy. take her.
This was the best history class. I don't even like history. She is a very helpful teacher. Grade is based on quizzes, a paper, an oral presentation, mid-term and final. Most history classes are test based only. I actually learned a lot in this class
i did not like this class at all. i slept through most of it. professor knows her history, but it's her job to know. just an average professor i guess. not great, not horrible, just eeeeh.
DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN!!!You cannot hear what she says when she is speaking, does not prepare you for the tests, lectures are dull and uninformative, and she is absolutely no help in office hours. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Really enjoyed her class. Lots of reading but it is to be expected in a higher level class. I received lots of help from her and she was always available during office hours. Although the class was tough she was not as intimidating as many other professors. She is very, very nice and 499 ended up being one of my favorite classes. Go figure!
The class was...okay. I actually learned a lot, but it got really dull at times. Has 6 online quizzes, one midterm, two papers and the final. grades pretty tough but shouldn't be too hard to get a B. she isn't the most exciting, but it could have been worse.
VERY nice woman, it is clear she loves teaching history. I highly recommend her. In class essays for the tests and final. Write thoroughly with lots of examples. Make sure you take notes in class.
sounds like a bird, laughs at her own jokes, and stares at me all the time, AWAKWARD. but other then those things its pretty boringly easy
Learned a lot in this class. But I really had a hard time getting over her voice at first lol (hard to hear if in the back, and sounds like a frog is in her throat). She grades pretty tough if you dont provide a lot of examples. Hard on grammar. Despite all of this, she's a very nice professor.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Don't buy the textbook, DO buy the novels. Her voice is annoying as hell, but she's an easy professor. Pretty boring also. Just say what you think she wants to hear and you'll get an easy A.
She is a very engaging teacher. Most people who complain do not put in th work and are just looking for a easy A. She has one two short papers, a midterm and a final. I suggest you take this class
Veryyyyyy dull and borning class, no study guide for essay test must read the textbook or try to listen (which is impossible because shes so boring) if you want to do well. Knows what shes talking about although you would only know that if you stay awake
She took attendance the first couple weeks but after that I showed up late so idk if she still does take attendance. Take good notes. The midterm is an essay; she gives you the prompts beforehand. There is a writing assignment that we had to answer within a group.
I liked this class very much! She explained things well, was organized, incorporated the readings nicely, and had us take quizzes only. My only complaint was that she made us work in groups for one of the major in class writing assignments which NEVER turns out well. Besides that, she's a good teacher to have for tour general History.
This class is pretty easy. Fast lectures, online quizzes, and she lets you out like 15 min early every class. Midterm was easy but the final was hard. one group assignment which is easy to do. sit in the front because she's hard to hear
Class could be boring at times, but some topics are actually interesting. Easy online quizzes and she does offer extra credits on the exams. Two exams and two written assignments. She doesn't have weird accent, but her voice is low though. Class is OK, if you're not already interested in history, class could be boring!
Such a useless class, did not learn much at all. The class got reformatted into a class that does group projects, and that reflects majority of your grade. Group project never turns out well. If you can, try to avoid this class, unless you like group projects. She chooses the groups for you btw, besides the last project.
Pretty boring, lectures are blunt. Book is only helpful for online quizzes which are easy. Buy novels for writing assignment which are fairly graded. Midterm and final can hurt grade, she expects you to know everything and then on test day randomly picks a question that you have to write about and know important names and things that happened.
HORRIBLE. I was doing well in her class until issues arose at home. I went to her & explained my parents were kicking me out so I would need to w/draw from the class in order to focus on that so I wouldn't be living on the STREETS. Her response: "Well you're just going to have to take the F." She completely screwed me over with my GPA. BEWARE.
The lectures are informative and there is a lot of reading.
Two big group projects involving a presentation, a 10-12 page paper, and worksheets on primary and secondary resources. It wasn't the toughest thing in the world as long as your group equally shares the work and procrastinates at the same time. She didn't really give much assistance with them, though. I say it was too much for a GE class.
Sucks!!! Online quizzes every Saturday. Three big projects worth about 70% of your grade. Don't mess up on one of them!!!
If you want to hear her, you should sit in the front. The class was not that bad overall, but you have to read to understand what she's asking. I don't think shes a tough grader, but there are those who fail the class.
I really enjoy this class with Donna Binkiewics! She's very nice and gives good detailed lectures. The class is not difficult at all. I do recommend reading the textbook and the other books that are required. The are 6 online quizzes all together (10 Q each) and a mid-term, essay, & a final. The class is really interesting to me and Donna is helpful
If you pay attention you'll do fine
She basically lectures every class period. I personally couldn't stand her voice, something about it irritated me. There aren't that many points in the class in general so try to do your best on the online quizzes. Doesn't really specify on what to study for when you go into the midterm/final in class essay.
One midterm and one final: in-class essay ONLY. One essay, one group project, and six online quizzes. You have to read to pass! Missing class missing important notes. READ THE NOVELS! IT WILL HELP for the midterm/final. She's hard to hear, so I recommend going to the front. She's really nice if you ever need help. She takes attendance randomly.
Absolute worst professor I've ever had. She does not care about you're understanding of the material what so ever. She does not put lecture materials on BeachBoard, lectures dryly for the entirety of the semester, and puts no effort into making her class an active learning environment. Has an attendance sheet.
I wouldn't take this professor again if I am being completely honest. She talks the entire class and most of us really just fight our sleep. I am sure she isn't a bad professor, it's just the way she teaches. All the exams are essays and she basically tells you to go over anything you covered before the exam. Mainly test and quiz based.
Donna gives a lot of information, which accounts for the heavy lectures. She talks a lot and lectures in a monotone way, but I enjoyed her class. Talk to her or go to office hours and she will help you. There's a lot of reading, but the textbook helps with the subject. Sit near her to hear her notes (also take notes, don't just copy her slides).
Dr. Binkiewicz is NOT a horrible professor. She is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject and her lengthy (monotone) lectures reflect that. She is a tough grader yet is vague in her expectations. Be prepared to do ALL of the readings, and know all of the material for the exams. No study guide, and no real review for the exams.
Very lecture heavy, every class will be long lectures with tons of information spat at you. Lectures are very dry as well. No assignments given out, just lots of text book reading, 3 online quizzes and mid term and final exam are written in class and she does not tell you what the topics will be.
There are alway lectures in her class and she required you to read ahead before class started. There are 6 online quizzes, 2 essay (one at home and another in class), for the midterm and final exam, they are essay writing. There are no study guide, your class note and textbook are the only source for study and prepare you for the exam.
Pretty dry lectures of her just reciting random bits of historical data and reading off powerpoints. Most assignments and exams are essays and she's an incredibly tough grader if you don't answer the question in exactly the way she wants you to. No study guides for exams; just tells you to think about the main ideas you've gone over in class .
Hard grader. I get all A's on papers all the time, but not with this professor. Tests are essays so you have to know your stuff.
She is okay. Just a dry lecturer. a little tough on her essay grading, but not that bad. Just talks the whole time. you have 2 approximately 5 page papers, a midterm in class essay, and the final was a group presentation and group paper. The class is manageable, just don't expect to be thrilled to attend class. passes around sign in sheet randomly.
Lectures are SO dry, I couldn't pay attention even when I tried. She doesn't post them online either. 2 exams, both essays with no specific study guides. Basically just study all of the chapters and know them extensively, with specific dates and details. There are 6 online quizzes that you get a few days to do, I missed 2 and got 0's on them.
I've taken Prof. Binkiewicz for two different classes now and she might be tough, but if you read and do what she expects, you can easily pass her class. She is a tough grader, but bc she wants you to succeed. Her 301 class is difficult, but worth it once you get to the end & realize how much you've learned from her. You really earn your grade.
Very dry lectures, but pretty easy class to do well in. Online quizzes and readings due every week, but not too bad. Two easy writing assignments, and some participation activities randomly in class. Best part: 3-4 page paper for your final. No multiple choice midterms or final exams.
She is very kind and knowledgeable but is one harsh grader. That is good for 301 but I cannot say it was a fun experience. I learned new things but it was not easy. As mostly transfers, we do not know what is expected of us and she could do a bit more of informing us of that in the beginning as opposed to just grading us. Not easy, not impossible.
Dr. Binkiewicz lectures every single class. She is a good professor, just that you'd be bored all the time. No textbook, it is all online. Weekly quizzes and two papers to work on. No test, or finals which is great. She really knows her stuff though so ask questions and participate. She'd enjoy that a lot. Want an easy class? This is the one.
If youre looking to take a history class and genuinely want to learn this is the class for you. Show up, take notes of slides, do the online readings, weekly quizzes and youll do fine. It is a lot of reading, but eventually youll get used to it. Material covered is interesting and you can tell she takes her time to find the best information.
Professor is very nice and passionate about history. Course consisted of online reading and quizzes that were timed and quite difficult so reading and studying are important. Tests were sort of difficult considering I didnt read much. Extra credit paper is offered. She lectures and they are important, take notes during class.
A real solid professor, but be sure to ask her what she is asking or looking for? So many times during the semester; I happened to be confused about what was due in or how she wanted this particular assignment. She's a devoted historian and I respect that. She helped push me to improve my writing and I thank her for that. You read a lot early on.
Her grading is confusing. One grade is on Globalyceum and the other is on Beachboard, so you don't really know what your grade is. Also, you can barely hear her in class. Her slides are completely useless as they only have one-five words or are just pictures.
Class size very small, so you get to interact with your class and the teacher to review to weekly readings. weekly 1 page essays( 1 face) that she grades like a final paper so do well on all of them. research paper should be what you like. choose an easy, cool topic like(child labor) bcs research can be time consuming if ur topic is uninteresting
Class is fairly easy, I'm not intrigued by the subject one bit. Her voice is kind of boring but you get u sed to it. I took her 8am, so it was a bit of a drag. Her class was mostly quizzes, in-class group question assignments and essays. I would say attendance isn't mandatory but she did have random assignments due at the end of the class period.
This is a super easy class but Dr. Binkiewicz is so dry!! Weekly quizzes to complete online that come with a lot of reading. You don't have to do the readings to take the quiz but these quizzes are pretty much your whole grade. You also have two essays and she is a harsh grader. Class not mandatory but in class activities almost every day.
A pretty easy mandatory class. The fact that there are no in class quizzes or exams is very cool however the professor herself is terrible. I would recommend this class but just be ready to endure a semester with a pain in the as prof. Easy class tho.
Dr. Binkiewicz is a nice professor and is very approachable, but is very selective when grading--especially the in-class assignments for points. The quizzes are basic reading checks for each week. There are three papers for this course, one done at home, one in class, and one that counts as the final. No in-class quizzes or exams.
13 online quizzes (Only 12 is counted, if you take Quiz 13 then it is for extra credit) Quizzes were sometimes difficult so you have to do the readings. Lots of group projects, it is best to prepare for it before going to class. Even if it was difficult, I LEARNED A LOT IN THIS CLASS. This is not part of my major so I wouldn't take it again.
lots and lots of lectures, most of the time really boring, a lot of group assignments, two papers, but no exams. there are weekly quizzes that are dreadful, YOU READ A LOT! you dont have to go to class, i never went towards the end of the semester and i still got an A. you just need to do good on the quizzes and the papers and your fine. just try
Lectures are terrible, she talks the entire class time & rambles on & honestly never sure what you're suppose to note down. Has powerpoints but those are useless as well. Makes you buy about 4-5 books that are to be read throughout the semester, & grades in a frustrating way! no direct grading criteria & markings on essays dont make sense at all.
I hate this class. She makes you do online quizzes every week BEFORE you learn the material. You do in-class activities on a website and so YOU NEED A LAPTOP FOR THIS CLASS. The in-class activities are stressful bc she gives you only 15 minutes to do them. There's an essay and a final paper. No tests. JUST DONT TAKE HER UNLESS U LOVE HISTORY.
Her lectures can be VERY boring, but as long as you show up and do your work on time, you should get the A. No exams, but there are weekly readings and quizzes (on Globalyceum- something you pay for, not Beachboard) you should try to maximize your points on. There are also 3 papers, so make sure you do well on them because they're worth a lot.
I really don't like how our textbook was (I think) a $50 third party website -- mandatory bc the quizzes were on there. It was such a hassle bc our group assignments would be on there too (readings too). And bc her lectures aren't great, you should read but the reading itself isn't great either. On a positive note, there are no tests, just quizzes
Her lectures were boring. We had a group assignment every week which was annoying because we only had 20 minutes to complete the assignment. Professor Binkiewicz is reasonable, if you ask for an extension or any other type of help she will give it to you. No final only weekly quizzes, and three papers worth a lot of points.
Boring. Super boring. I didn't enjoy her class at all and i honestly dreaded it. So many group projects (that sucked) on a website that we had to pay for ourselves (it was mandatory and around $50). .Also, don't hurt yourself by taking her almost 3 hour single online class per week.
Many people say she was terrible, but I believe shes a decent professor. As expected for a 3 hour class, of course its going to be dreadful, but shes a good professor. You can tell shes passionate about her lectures and the content she presents. Weekly quizzes, 3 writing assignments and no final. Take her if you have the choice to meet twice.
Online class so zoom breakout rooms once a week for group assignments were sort of frustrating. No tests though, grades are made up of assignments every week, a weekly quiz, and some papers.
You're just sitting in a lecture hall and listening to her talk with very vague slides that aren't even posted to revisit. Your grade is based mostly on a couple essays but I've asked around and it doesn't seem like she gives A's or at least she rarely does. Lectures don't cover the information you need to be successful in weekly quizzes. Readings.
Great professor. Although she lectured through the entire class session, info was simple. Easy weekly quizzes based off the reading. Three papers, two based off reading and one group paper based of an assigned book. Participation polls are taken for attendance & group assignments. Fairly easy class if you pay attention, just busy work.
she's not a horrible professor but I would not want to take her class again. she makes you pay 40 dollars for a website so she can do polls, weekly quizzes, and in class assignments. there's no exams only 3 essays (1 group one and 2 individual). she doesn't post lectures online and and they get boring after a while.
Good professor, easy class, but very boring. Most days she just reads off slides, but you have to go to class to get the information because she doesn't post them. It is REQUIRED to purchase a subscription to Globalyceum to pass the class. There are NO EXAMS, but there are weekly quizzes (3 days to complete) and 3 essays.
She gives no clear rubric or prompts for the essay. Her wording on any assignment sucks so bad. I never understand what she means because of how vague she is. She will present word heavy slideshows that we have to rush to copy. She refuses to upload the slideshows even though it seems to be more ideal to write our notes onto the slideshows.
This class I took is online at night, which is hard to pay attention to, the class is only one day about 2 1/2 hours. Quiz every week and she grade essays very tough. Even though there is not that much homework, there is a lot of reading A LOT!!
If you are attentive during lecture, engage with class assignments, and read the required materials, an A is easily attainable. Your grade is made up of extra credit, participation, attendance, weekly quizzes, and 3 written midterms. You will need to pay for Globalyceum, but there is a free pdf of the book you'll read by the end of the semester.
Gave us about 4 papers to write on the lecture material she provided. We did not use the textbook, but had to purchase a book she needed us to read and a trial for a website she would put our quizzes on. Lecture would go on for quite a while (2-2 1/2 hrs) and she would only give us a 5-10min break. It was not hard but it was def tedious.
Easy class to pass, very laid. One essay due a week 5 paragraphs or 2 pages. Freedom to do your portfolio any time period. helps you be specific on what you want to study. Let us out early and towards the end of the semester, class time is not mandatory bc she uses it for grading or to meet with her individually. i would definitely take her again!
This was the worst and hardest teacher I have ever had in my life. You have to write an essay about 2 books and a movie, and she didn't even show us the part of the movie we needed for the essay, so we had to watch the important part on our own. You have to take notes on everything she says because she doesn't post any sort of review or notes.
If I could've dropped this class I would have. Worst professor I have ever had. Her slides have very little information on them but rants on for 20 mins about one slide and expects you to remember everything she says. LOTS OF READING!!!!! Huge essay, quiz every other week, takes attendance randomly, DO NOT TAKE HER
she presents boring slides. she counts attendance too with iclicker so if u dont respond to ONE question for participation that means your absent that day. each day youre absent ur grade goes down by 10% and participation is worth 50% of your GRADE. i suggest you drop when you can. theres other proffesors who are fair to you
the bad reviews are pretty unfair tbh---not a difficult class if you actually read and attend lectures
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I can go into a multitude of reasons as to not take her but It would be multiple paragraphs. Look for any other 473 professor
She uses iclicker for attendance, which counts for your grade. I lot of people complain about the class but in reality, it isn't difficult. I got a good grade without ever studying. She's not a tough grader. There was 1 or 2 papers I don't really remember but I'm not even sure if what I wrote made sense and I still got an 80 something.
I was so excited to take this course but Professor Binkiewics has sucked all the joy out of the topic for me. The Professor offers no structure for both coursework and lecture material. Too much of the class is up for interpretation and she is discouraging if the class doesn't interpret things in the way she does.
She can be pretty nice and helpful while in class. But, she is very unclear in her syllabus and her instructions. She does not inform students when there will be in-class assignments and randomly activates iclicker for attendance and participation. If you need to miss class sometimes, this is not the class for you. Writing midterm is super easy!
Lots of reading. One solo presentation where you present to the class. Final project is your choice between a video or paper. Quizzes are assigned periodically throughout the semester and due on Fridays before midnight. Information was quite informative but wish there would be more lecture slides and films. Clarifies any questions that students ask
Donna's class can be challenging, but using study aids like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can make it manageable. Attendance is a must, and the grading can be vague, so stay on top of the work.
She's a very nitpicky grader and also unsympathetic. If you don't word something exactly like she wants you'll be deducted points. God forbid you have a death in your family because she will do the bare minimum to support you while you're away at a funeral. Get ready to work and fight for your grade
Do NOT take her as a professor, she lectures and does not post the slides, so god forbid you miss a day you will not be getting those notes. her slides have one bullet point but she yaps for 20 mins each slide. even if no one turns in an assignment and you do, she will mark off a whole point for a sentence she does not agree with.
This professor lectures majority of the class time. Her lectures are full of information but she does not post slides. She expects you to remember all the information shared in class time but if you miss one class, it sets you back badly. Her grading criteria is harsh because she looks for answers that SHE wants. She also assigns a lot of reading.
Be prepared to take detailed notes, she doesn't post slides and lectures nonstop. Missing class will set you back. She's a very tough grader and expects you to phrase things exactly her way. You'll read and write a lot. The class is doable, but you have to work hard and stay on top of everything.
Professor Binkiewicz is a good professor. Although she has heavy lectures, I skipped 4-5 times & so long as you do the practice questions at the end of each section in the book you will easily pass the writing portions since its pretty similar to her questions. There are online quizzes and the final is online too. Easy B but attend class for an A.
Really great professor. There was readings every week that she provided through canvas and you talk about them in class so it is important to do but they aren't long and it is interesting. Her lectures are great and I would definitely recommend.
