Don't take her. She is so mean. I did really good all my tests but she still gave me a C. She just love to teach guys
very easy A just for me :)
she is very nice teacher, but it is not easy to get"A" on her class. If you take her, do your homework and don't miss it.
I took her class before, so i know how was it. She is very nice. the books she choose to teach us were also usefull. However you neeed to study hard and everyone can get A. really!

For International Students: Talk to her if anything troubles you in Enlish; she will help you to solve it. She wants students to learn very much. For students who don't want to learn in her class: don't take her class. Don't waste her time. ==========================================================================(MOLE;MODE; MOW; MOLD)
She is very nice and very helpful. Her class is very interesting.I love her personality. If you want to learn something,I really recomend her.
She is the best in english department at mesa college .Dont beleive me take some class with the other professors, then will beleive me.
this teacher she is very easy. All you need to do is to do the homework she assigned, and read the book , then tomorrow come the test it was exactly on the reading if you do the reading then it a piece of cake on the test.
Shes a good teacher if your reading level is actually that low, i didnt feel like i leared anything. it was really slow and boring, but if you really need to start at the bottom, she'll be good for you
Ilove Donna!!!if you do the homework and go to the classes ,you will pass this class. She is very nice!!!
She is one of the most important professor to me. She helps me understand english better. She rekindle my passion for ENGLISH
She is nice but she's a strict teacher. There are a lot of homework until I feel like I don't have enough time; but they help to improve my English.
OMG, she is the best teacher i ever had, wow she definatelly shown passion for teaching, is very helpful. i describe her as the mentor i wish to have. her values Passion, Devotion, Integrity, ambition, courage, and pride. Just one of a kind.SD
she is a good teacher BUT the grade that she gives is always unfair. I worked hard all the semester, I did good in all my quizzes and for some reason I got a C and I wasn't the only one my friends all of them got a C!! and I know they did good in that class. I don't know what happened. think about it before you take this class!!!
Unfair grading Professor!
She was nice, for some reasons i took her class twice esl 21 and esl 32, but both classes i got DD didn't pass. It's really surprised me because i worked hard on both classes and never missed her classes. But anyway, thanks pro Duchow, now i enrolling English 120 at Grossmont College.
she is so beach that not give fair grade even if you work hard I'm tell you dont west you time she will suck you up I don't recommedent her better watch out before you lip
She's an OK teacher, but she needs to learn that a lot of the students are learning from the beggining mostly.
If you want to learn French, do not take her class. You will never get an A in this class, and if you another class apart from this one, your grade will be a C or lower. She leaves a ridiculous amount of homework and goes through chapters way to fast. By the time you leave the class you will not be able to speak french.
Duchow is a decent French professor. Very organized and consistent. Do all of your homework, though, because she grades it based on accuracy nOT completion and it's a HUGE (30%) PORTION OF YOUR GRADE. The tests are easy, homework tedious--there are quite a few speeches/skits as well.
She demands to much and is very picky when grading it is hardly impossible to ever get an A on ANY assignments. She talked about the same subject the whole semester didn't learn nothing much just about food, weird because its not a nutrition class or wtvr don't recommend.
Horrible teacher. Always making up excuses and makes it impossible to pass her class unless you are a teachers pet. Will not recommend her at all if you want to pass English.
Really bad class didn't learn anything at all! poor teaching really even if you pass your portfolio nd final
Don't take this class. You learn nothing and she is very unorganized with your papers and she's usually late.
Honestly at first when I started this class I thought she was a good teacher. She gave a lot of quizes on the reading book and even if I read what was assign it was hard to get all the answers correct. Even though i did good in all the essays she still based the grade too much on the readings in which this was a writting class not reading.
We did MORE READING THAN WRITING in this class. We had to read 2 books. Some of the quizzes are fill in the blanks so you basically have to memorize both books. She's not a terrible teacher you just have to be okay with a lot of reading, a little bit of writing, and having to do punctuation on the final exam. Good Luck!
The instructor lost 70% of her students! Enough said!
Professor Duchow was a great English instructor. Lots of reading in this class, but it helped to build up points to ensure a solid point base for a good grade. Projects and essays were fun and straightforward. Great skills gained in this class for righting thesis papers in the future.
Never never in her class. Even thought you study hard, you do all HWs, Quizes, assignments, discussions, and tests you still NP her class.
Do not take her! she does not explain anything from the textbook, she let the time running without explaining about the class you have to learn by you own if you ask her a question for something she does not explain it to you instead she let other students answer that question for you. she gave a lot of homework and she did not explain it at all.
Terrible professor. Worst in my life. Does not explain anything. If you are looking for esl40 professors, NEVER get her.
Bad professor. We read the Great Gatsby (a high school read) and receive homework on comma use?!?!? She gives pop quizzes and even if your sick she will give zeros if you didn't know there was a quiz and miss it. very unfair grader on everything. No extra Credit. Wish I didn't take her
VERY unfriendly. Clarity? zero. Tough grader . If you want to actually pass this course and maybe enjoy it as well, definitely wouldn't recommend her.
Wouldn't recommended her. NOT helpful, unfriendly and doesn't really seem motivated to teach. Always grumpy or moody. Made English my worst class
She is a great professor. She seems unfriendly at first glance, yet if you do your best and make a progress, she is watching. The writing skill you achieved in this class is firm. You will learn many skills from her if you work hard. You will improve your skill by making an effort. After all, that is what college really is. She is a real teacher.
Expect a quiz from the reading material. Expect to do a lot of writing. Helps if you ask.
Makes you think you're in elementary school again. Has zero skill communication with students. Seems like she hates being there giving a class. Never sent email or let the students know she was going to miss class, and so we all went to class 8am and we all had to go back home. Never take her class!!!
One of the worst professors known to man! I'd advise not taking her at all! She grades tough, but teaches at a high school level rather than college. Disrtibutes tedious assignments that don't make sense. Seems to have a social issue and doesn't comminicate well with students. Unfair grader and not willing to work with you on any level.
Think twice before taking this professor!!! Her grading doesn't make sense. If you ask for help she makes you feel like you're not smart at all. The lectures are super boring, and she's not nice or friendly! The class started with 30+ students and at the end there was only 7! That says a lot of not only the class, but the professor.
An impossible grader. You'll have the worst time. This teacher is only here for a paycheck. She does not care about her students. "I don't make the rules, I just enforce them." It doesn't matter if all her students fail the class to her because she just wants the money. You will learn NOTHING from this class. She tells you you're wrong but not why!
the worse teacher ever. she doesn't know what shes doing brings usefulness assignments. This teacher she just want the money i dont know why they let her teach at this school... Dont take her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Terrible, has no idea how to teach
Professor Duchow is a wonderful teacher of English. I took her class over the summer and I have to say she is well organized, She gives great feedback and if you participate in class it's good in her book. I am taking her again for another level of English.
She is a nice teacher but with the online class there is always quite a bit of work to do through the week and late work is not accepted at all. If you can really focus yourself in an online class and keep up with her assignments during the week well then she'll be a good fit for you.
It was mostly discussion-based with a few short papers and essays. We started with poetry & short stories, then read two novels. I liked the tasks and topics she chose for discussions and she definitely tried to make the papers and classes relatable. We had one grammar lesson that I thought was too grade-school, but I think the class needed it.
Average - class was purely textbook based with some short articles (no novels). Grade was based off of 4 essays, discussion board responses, & few writing projects. Social issues were the major topic. Hard grader when it came to essays & little constructive feedback. No extra credit, though going above expectations may earn extra points.
Will not let you know what books you need until the week you need to be 130 pages in. Feedback is constructive at best and often passive aggressive if not flat out rude. Not an overly tough grader, but not middle of the road or easy. poor online class structure and communication. I think she has the students best interests in mind, but misses a bit
Professor Donna Duchow is my favorite English professor. There is a book that I have been wanting to write and taking her class and all her teaching has given me the confidence to write that book. I will use this teaching for University. This professor answers any questions quickly and gives very constructive comments in a very positive manner.
I wanted to be hopeful that it would get better, but it never did with her. Professor Duchow is rude and unhelpful, to say the least. Passive aggressive and does not give respectful or constructive criticism. Shes belittling. She seems to pick favorites and if she doesnt like you, it shows. She claims to want to helps students, thats laughable.
I just finished engl105 this summer. Professor Duchow's super nice, her class was fun. Materials were interesting and educational. She was always open to help and respond to emails quickly, she offered extra credit, encouraged students to participate in discussions and interact with eachother. If you follow instructions, you'll earn a good grade.
Duchow wasn't a bad professor she just didn't really inspire me which is how I want to feel when taking an English course. She was also not the best grader, but also not too harsh.
Do all the reading, think critically, and participate and you'll do fine. I empathize with any professor who has to teach an English or Philosophy course on Zoom right now. The only downside of the course was cameras weren't required. It's hard to discuss any nuance of the novels we read as a group when cameras are off and people don't participate.
Professor Duchow belittles and degrades frequently. She speaks down to you and is passive aggressive when emailing you or in grade notes. She writes as though speaking to a child, and structures her assignments as such too. You have to use a pre-written template for papers and you also must follow her criteria EXACTLY or major points will be lost.
I took English 205 with her and I can genuinely say DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. Find another professor. For our final project she asked us to plan, arrange and execute a community project event along with write a paper on it and do a video presentation. Bear in mind I was taking English 205 ONLINE. She gives A LOT of homework on top of it.
Hides assignments in the syllabus when there is a monthly calendar where the rest of the assignments are or are not. I don't know, I was dropped.
Very unhappy with the professor. Not enough time is given to prepare the many papers given. Extreme amount of homework, discussions, and classwork. Hard grades with little to no feed back or suggestions. This is entry-level English and is treated like an up-division course.
The class is easy if you show up to class and do the assigned reading. Assigns a lot of last minute homework, but they're doable. Professor Duchow tries pretty hard to encourage class discussions/participation, but is mainly left with awkward silence because nobody wants to speak.
The class isn't all that hard, you just need to know what to expect. You have about 4 essays throughout this course including the final. Also note that she will not give you any time in class to do your essay and she still assigns homework. You also have about week to complete your essay, note she locks her assignments.
Overall and easy class but she is very rude. Sometimes grading would be confusing and when asked, she would respond in a condescending tone. Homework assigned last minute and due before class. Pros: Is flexible with deadlines, just ask nicely. Participation gets her in a good mood.
Just terrible. Never tells you why you're wrong and gives a snarky response and leaves you with awkward silence. She assigns essays and a ton of homework in class which are due the night of. God awful. Highly regret taking this class because I didn't learn a thing besides MLA format which I learned in the 6th grade.
she's so hard to reason with and tough grader. gives homework that is graded and given back after 4 weeks that it's due and always talks in a condescending tone.
she often waits 2 weeks before grading your assignments, so by the time you get feedback on your work, you've already repeated the same mistakes on other submitted work.
Run FAR AWAY. This woman is condescending, rude, self-absorbed, operating with a bloated sense of self-worth, takes (literally) months to grade things, so you've already submitted multiple "wrong" things by the time she gets around to telling you, and is overall a thoroughly unpleasant person in literally every way.
The online English 205 course fell short of my expectations. The teacher's poor communication and lack of feedback created a negative experience. I was dropped on the first day, and although she invited me back, I had to constantly ask for assistance. If I could, I would rate it lower than "1 - Awful."
I've never had a tougher grader as a professor. Even if she didn't agree with the way you phrased something, you'll get points marked off. It's a ton of work for sure, be ready to dedicate several hours a week to be ready. She is good at communication and offers zoom sessions.
Inconsistent grading. Doesn't always follow the rubric and sometimes takes off points for the smallest errors. Many assignments revolve around sharing personal and political beliefs/opinions. Didn't really learn much, especially since she basically gives zero feedback on the essays and assignments. The reading material was good though.
This class was not the easiest. Constant assignments was given every week, two essays, and one giant service project. Although I got an A in the class, I was a full-time student with no job. The class is doable, however be prepared to spend countless hours on assignments.
very nitpicky on grading and will mark you down on very small things.
Not clear about assignment due dates/requirements, then marks down a lot of points for small things which weren't clear in the instructions. Not understanding about out of class/life situations: if you have an appointment or emergency she doesn't care and will penalize you for it despite how out of your control it may be. slow grader.
Doesn't respond to emails...Harsh grader with no rubrics attached to assignments. Marks you down for errors but doesn't specify which error or why it is an error. Grading doesn't provide a clear idea of what you could do better in the future. Essay questions hard to interpret. Assignments are graded late resulting in unknowingly repeating mistakes.
She will assign things outside of class. For example, our class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays, and she regularly assigns homework or quizzes on Fridays or Saturdays with the expectation that they will be completed before class on Monday. Don't fall behind. You'll never catch up. Better yet, don't take this class from this prof. She's truly awful.
My only advice is to not take this class if you are currently working. I took this class plus 3 other classes while having a part time job and I was able to catch up on every class besides this one. Too much homework and unforgiving deadlines.
Drop it. It is not a hard class, she is difficult. There are in-class assignments every class, with a partner, alone, or both. She will forget what she assigned you and grade you poorly and late w/ no critique or rubric. A meaningless final project that will take up majority of your time. Also keep tabs on canvas as she assigns things at random.
She was not a good teacher. She was rude and is not good at responding to emails. There was a lot of reading. She was a really tough grader and took a lot of points off for small things. Would not recommend her at all.
oh my god!!!! the worst. her canvas is specifically set up for you too have to sit there for ages just to complete anything, she has all these weird side quest things. like the quizzes all have access codes that you have to locate in the module. she's awful and it's obvious she makes it hard on purpose
Genuinely horrible. You miss one day of class and your grade has gone down heavily. She literally makes you do a whole community service project. I decided today to write this because of how utterly annoyed I am that she can't take the time to just explain things, even in class she sounds like she doesn't care. Absolute BS.
Would not take her class, not recommended. Not good with responding asynchronous and honestly kind of rude. If you do happen to take the class, don't waste your money on the online book and just buy the physical copy. I learned the hard way that they are different page numbers and that she wont help you in any way if you get the online version.
I'm writing this because at this point I am fed up with her class. Missing one assignment can cause your grade to drastically drop or barely rise. Very picky about grading and not clear as to what the issue is. Canvas setup is an extra hassle to find assignments. Bussy work makes it difficult to balance school and work. Rude and careless.
Dropped this class after getting frustrated so many times, and my situation never got better. The professor is rude, and will not see herself as the one in the wrong, as assigns so much busy work not to mention the community service project that's due at the end of the semester for some reason. If you have a job or any outside responsibility AVOID
Fantastic professor. Gave great feedback and really made you papers you wrote mean something. Very cut and dry.
She does not care. Period.
Esta señora le vale si queres aprender. utiliza contexto de conflicto en su curriculo como pretexto de que no es racista. Los mas blancos de ojos azules pasan. los meztizos batallan y los chinos fracazan.
Selective grader. At times it feels like she is trying to be intentionally obtuse. She can also be rude for seemingly no reason at all. You spend all semester fighting to maintain an A. No assignment benefits your grade, but any minor mess up will bring you down. Buy the physical textbook. Other reviews are correct.
