Very nice lady. Makes the class enjoyable despite being a very dull subject and you actually learn the material. Tests are fairly easy. Very helpful as well. I recommend her.
Amazing teacher. She is the reason why I am an accounting major. Take her if you can. Has a lot of experience in accounting and teaching.
If you want to teach yourself tax, take her. Test open book, but HARD. Class average on first test: 65. Worse she is extremely unhelpful - when the class doesn't understand she doesn't explain the material, and is annoyed when people ask questions in class.
Does not know how to teach! Confuses herself during the lectures, which confuses the students, then gets frustrated when people ask questions. Maybe she's ok for GB 201, but terrible for tax.
a big no no... her tests are so much harder than other gb 201 professors tests... just dont do it
I scored an 89 on the first test, and found the test to be very fair. The 2nd test, I studied about 5-6 hours and I scored a 93 with ease. I hardly go to class. This teacher is very fair as far as grading is concerned. Take her, she is the best tax professor available in comparison to Noga or Reed.
Amazing Professor. Really loves the subject and always willing to help. Exams are difficult, perhaps most difficult in department. If you want to be an accounting major, definitely take her. Very kind and just overall a great woman!
Just a rude lady. Refuses to let you go to her office hours, told off the class, boring and confusing lectures that make no sense, impossible exams, not willing to help you AT ALL.. just terrible. Beware and stay away!
Very rude professor. If you are not one of her favorites in class, she pretty much won't even talk to you in class. She made it very clear that she does not have time for her students. If you want to learn, you have to teach yourself.
Horrible professor. She does a bad job of going over concepts and problems in class. This forces us to teach ourselves through the textbook. Is very, very strict on quizzes/exams, as she will not answer or give hints to ANY question. She even has everyone keep their tests face-down until everyone gets them. WTF, is this the 1950s?
she is really rude & i don't suggest anyone take her unless you really know ur ish
Useless professor and will not help you in any way. You have to do everything for yourself in this class.
There are many bad accounting teachers at Bentley. Donna McConville is one of them. She is nice and makes you think you can succeed in her class but then sets you up to do bad. Her tests are impossible and she likes having people get low grades. Tests average in the mid 60s and she thinks thats high. Gives you too much aggrivation. Do not take!!!!

Do not take, you cannot do well with this teacher
absolutely rediculous when it comes to grading, I would not take her again if my life depended on it. Never got anything below a 3.7 in gb 201, 202 and AC 310. In this class...1.3!!!! It seems like she is trying to make it so students do poorly in her class.

You've all heard this... Those that can't do teach. McConville is the opposite. She knows it all, but can't teach toilet training.
All tax classes are hard, but if you take Advanced Tax you should already know that and be expecting to work hard to get a good grade. Compared to my first tax professor (Prof. Read), she was incredibly easy and actually taught! Doesn't expect you to know things she didn't teach in class, just remember to talk about basis on tests and read the book
Time for an honest review. I've taken her for GB201, AC311, and AC312 and can tell you that she's a phenominal professor. Her tests are difficult only because of the material itself, she's a very fair grader, and you will learn a lot from her. Willing to help but expects you to read and do hw. Switch your majors if you can't hack it crybabies.
Really would not suggest taking her...
You would think she's a good professor, nothing could be further from the truth. Acts like the material is easy and grades way too harsh. I regret taking her class.
She's got a brilliant mind, which makes this review even more frustrating. Tax is a tedious and difficult subject (mostly because it's tedious), and if you're planning on putting minimal work into it your grade will reflect that. She's not a good teacher, though you'll walk out of every class thinking: that wasn't so bad! Then you take the test.
You leave every class thinking that it wasn't so bad, and then she royally screws you on the tests. She is a good teacher, but she is just really really hard!
I don't know how she got so many bad reviews. McConville is awesome. I took her for both 311 and 312 this summer and she is a great professor. I actually learned a lot in her class not just learned stuff for the test. The tests can be difficult at times but if you put in the work and read the book you will be fine. If your willing to read take her.
she screwed my whole career and passion of accounting. worst teaching style-she discourages and tells you to drop before the beginning of the class-if you want to be an accountant i will recommend not take with her-because you gonna hate your career
People who are serious about their education: Donna is an amazing woman and professor. The material is difficult. She is a very thorough, passionate and involved professor, willing to meet at all times, will accommodate you.Not willing to put the effort in?expect to get grades handed to you? keep dreaming switch your majors if u cant take the heat!
She is a very good teacher and explains things well. However, her test are impossible. They are opened book but you have to go into the tests not planning on using it. There is no time to think or breath once she passes the test out. If you are not interested in going into tax don't take her!
Professor McConville was an excellent professor. I had her for 311 and am taking her for 312. AC 311 is a difficult class and it requires a lot of outside preparation, however, McConville explains the concepts very well and contributes her own knowledge of "real world" accounting which is helpful and interesting. I recommend taking her classes.
Do not take. Take anyone but her. Any other professor will not kill your GPA like she does. Heartless and does not care about students. Her tests are painful and she is so much harder than any other professor.
She is actually freakin awesome. Don't get me wrong, she is pretty challenging but I've never learned so much from one professor or teacher in my life. I did fair in her class but have no regrets taking her and would take The History of Salt if she taught it. Rock on McConville!
One of the best professors I have had at Bentley. I can't speak highly enough of her. She is a bit intimidating at first, but she really cares and wants people to learn. She goes through tons of examples, communicates with the class, and is very organized. She grades closely, which is good if you want to learn (bad if you just want the grade).
Awesome Professor! Takes her time thoroughly explaining topics. Willing to review additional problems. Doesn't try to pull tricks on the exams, very straight forward about what will be on them. Clearly cares about her students' successes. Definitely Take Her!!
Overall a good teacher. A little anal about formatting but learned a lot and fair
Wonderful professor. Really difficult, but definitely manageable if you are willing to put in the work. Take her if you're interested in what you're learning in the class, but if you aren't interested I wouldn't recommend her.
Would Take Again. Love Her.
It's tax, the subject is automatically dry and hard since you have to cover so much. The Prof. wants you to succeed and any tax class needs work. Open book tests, but they cover a lot of material. She's really clear and makes sure you understand, but you still have to read. Tax projects are the only tricky part but are same for all tax classes.
My favorite professor in Bentley! Teach clearly and grade fair. Really nice person, this course makes me like taxation even more. Love her!
A lot of people said she was hard, but she was awesome. Went through lectures nice and slowly so students could understand. Easy participation points by reading before class. Takes her time through all of the material. I found the tax return practice sets to be hard, but she was always open to discussion. Very fair.
I really wanted to like her--she seems to be competent and have an interesting life story, but her grading is unnecessarily tough. I didn't do bad in the midterm, but her grading on my homework really hurts my overall grade for the class. I put a lot of effort in the homework, yet she tried very hard to deduct points from our homework.
She is by far the most difficult professor I've met at Bentley. AC 750 is a hard class, but make sure you get a reasonable and approachable professor. I wouldn't recommend her. Take others.
Unclear instructions, high expectations. AC312 itself was hard, and she was not at all helpful. Would not recommend her, because you have to put in a lot of effort to do well on her tests with unexpected surprises.
Wants you to read partial of the materials on your own and puts them on the test. Unclear instruction on projects and a tough grader. Not approachable.
She is by far the best teacher I have ever had. She is very strict but her lectures are awesome. You can tell how much time she spent in preparing the lectures - very well organized and easy to understand. I can't imagine how I can ever understand tax treatments about disposition of properties (long term, short term, 1231 gain, etc.)

She is probably the most strict professor at Bentley. It might have been the material (Tax) that I struggle in accounting, but it was definitely a hard course. I read every chapter before class but still struggled due to having a tremendous amount of homework, projects, and very difficult exams. If you want a 4.0, don't take her class.
She has been one of the best professors I've ever had. Tough on grading, she expects you to put in as much effort into the work as she is preparing it. Read often and multiple times, she gives great feedback and is accessible outside of class for guidance, questions, etc. Study for the exams, pay attention on projects, don't get behind.
GB 112 follows a strict curriculum so can't really say the class is her fault. She is really caring and willing to help as long as you reach out. I personally fell asleep alot so if you are not into accounting find a more entertaining professor. otherwise shes chill and it was her first time teaching the class.
McConville is definitely not a professor I would take again. She keeps track of participation, and if you don't participate it will hurt your grade. When people do participate, she acts like their questions are dumb if they don't understand something. She actually does know the material well though.
I really enjoyed McConville's class. She grades tough but if you just give 112 the time it demands, you'll do fine in her class. She's always willing to back-track a little during lectures and homework is pretty straightforward. There's probably better options for 112 but don't sleep on McConville as a safety.
Prof. McConville genuinely wants her students to succeed. That being said, she struggles to keep up with the pace of this course. She grades the tests tough and is harsh with partial credit. I would take her again in a class she has more experience with because she is funny and entertaining.
This was Professor McConville's first year teaching GB112, and I think she did a great job. Going into GB112, I had no interest in Accounting, but after taking her class I think I may major in it. She's very knowledgeable and very helpful if you have questions. Definitely use the textbook and do your homework in order to have a good understanding.
Professor McConville really knows her stuff. Going into her class never have taken an accounting class before, I can say that she helped me understand it a lot. Yes, she is an extremely tough grader, and she also grades participation which can be hard when 30 other kids are in your class too. McConville is a good choice, but it won't be easy.
Professor McConville really cares about her students. You still need to work hard to get a good grade but the course itself requires some work. It is better to read the chapter assigned before the class but you can just review her presentations and it will be fine.
Wish she would send out an email with administrative/exam information instead of constantly repeating it at the beginning of class for 10 minutes
Constantly running out of time before exams - doesn't get through all the material and you end up teaching yourself. Shes open to office hours but will be very condescending when answering questions Her solution to when the classes average is bad is to tell everyone they arent trying hard enough. 9 students dropped her class this sem in my section.
Super off-putting and condescending in the way she speaks. I've never had a professor complain so much about having to grade things when every professor has assignments/exams to grade. Says she took five hours to make an Excel spreadsheet when it just has questions copied and pasted with text wrapped?
McConville cares for her students, but grades very harshly. Many students dropped. Says to try harder if you don't do well; will not admit that tests are too long and difficult. 1.5 hr difficult weekly quizzes, 3 exams, 1 project, in-class quizzes. Other 312 professors are far easier. Worst test grades I've gotten in my life; usually get mostly A's
Her test is so tough.
She grades hard, and expects too much for a class like Fraud. She can make simple material really challenging by assigning so much reading and projects. Test is hard enough because she gave a whole lot of essay questions. The worst is she expect "right answer" from analytical answers.
312 has the highest withdraw rate of any course at Bentley. Donna doesnt make it easier, but DANG do you get your money worth with her. Her lectures are so helpful, best prof at Bentley. Yes this is very hard class but you will come out of it better prepared for CPA than another prof. Take her if you are AC major. If not, steer clear, shes hard!
She's awful. She takes forever to grade. 72 hour requirement for grades being submitted is apparently just a recommendation for her. She reads PowerPoints all class and blames students when the entire class fails. She runs out of time and tells you to read the book and tests you on things you either haven't seen or briefly touched on. Just don't.
I never post reviews, but as a fellow accounting student, I feel obligated to warn everyone. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I am rather studious, but this class was the absolute worst and it made me feel discouraged and sad at the end of the day. She makes AC312 even worse by making students feel bad and should of "prepared more" - no help only pain...
312 is a hard class. Professor McConville makes sure you know that. She does a lot of practice questions in class and participation is important, she will cold call on you. You really do need to put in work for the class but she helps a lot along the way. Practice her in-class questions and suggested textbook problems and you'll do well on the exam
Agree with all the negative comments on this Professor. I was in a hybrid class with her. She completely ignored her online students, only called on in-person students even though participation is a big part of the grade. Grades unreasonably hard for a fraud class. Her lectures are informative but it's impossible to do well on any test.
Absolute worst experience at Bentley. Students ask her questions, she makes fun of them and answers sarcastically making us feel dumb. Super unhelpful for those who have a hard time understanding the material. Brags about people dropping her class cuz its hard but its actually cuz she is such a bad professor and students are afraid of failing.
Undoubtedly the hardest class/prof combo offered @Bentley. Her case studies are torture. You have a 90 min quiz outside of class at the end of every chapter. If you have no choice but to take 312 w her, just get thru it. Do not drop the class. You will pass. Public accounting firms are desperate to hire. They wont care what grade u got in 312.
Teaching and motivation styles ineffective. When half the class drops, attributes lack of preparation, blaming students for her inability to effectively teach. Gives 0 help on the course project. Incredibly unhelpful. Talks about how busy she is constantly when she chose to teach 5 classes. Course needs to change. Good person, needs work as prof.
McConville definitely cares about her students. She explains the material really well, and she will explain concepts in multiple different ways to make sure everyone understands it. But, if you want a good grade in the class then you have to read the chapters and do some of the exercises in the chapters. She also gives extra credit opportunities.
I actually did very well in this class, no thanks to Donna. More than half my class ended up dropping the class, and half the people who didn't drop failed. She is so awful at explaining concepts, she goes way too fast, and expects everyone to be an expert on the information before they even step foot in the classroom. Dont take her if u can.
Donna can be understanding if you take the time to get to know her. She is aware that 312 is a tough class; the subject matter is difficult regardless of the prof. The issue is the exams - the problems she gives are more difficult than the in-class/homework exercises. 312 has the highest withdrawal rate for a reason. Do not expect a 4.0.
Exams are SO difficult no matter how much you practice. The 3 exams comprise 70% of your grade in entirety, so if you aren't a good test taker, you simply will not do well. Took me 2 tries to pass this class, and still didn't do great. Weekly quizzes are long, tedious, and near impossible. She is very condescending and not understanding or lenient.
This class is undoubtedly hard. The exams are mostly open ended questions and you will need to show your work to receive full credit. She does not curve exams and does not share average exam scores which I find to be weird. Graded group projects harshly. You will have to treat this class like a job if you want to pass.
To those whom is really interested in accounting, Donna is an excellent professor if you are able to work hard with her and her course. It is tough though, but it is because of those complicated accounting principle instead of prof Donna. I personally spend more than 10 hours a week on accounting and get full score in exams. You can do it as well.
Treats the class as if it matters more than anything, even though it's an elective and all the material she teaches is outdated. Rude, condescending, unsympathetic, impossible to have a conversation with, etc., etc. Tests worth 60% of your grade with 80% of that being subjective essay questions. Could not stand her throughout the entire semester.
Donna just has a standard on her exams that break the barriers of reality in today's world
GPA killer
All the past comments are true. I experienced multiple panic attacks because of her this semester.
This was one of the most frustrating classes I've ever taken. She doesn't cover all the slides during lectures, so you are expected to learn the material on their own since it will be on the exam. She covers a lot of content in a class. She doesn't care whether the students grasp the concepts. Also, it took her two months to grade a group project.
I did not like prof. Mcconville. She is very passive-aggressive and does not teach well. She tries to help when you ask, but is not great at that either. Only good thing about her is that she can be sympathetic on grading if you email or go to her office hours, but not always. DO NOT TAKE.
Prof. Donna is hilarious (not on purpose) and sweet. She is a good person but not a great professor. Her lectures are basically pointless as she reads off slides and picks on kids who don't understand. She also grades tests/projects EXTREMELY subjectively with little instruction. Had to fight for the A and didn't learn much, would not recommend.
Everything you have heard about this class is accurate, hardest class I have ever taken at Bentley! Not impossible though, you just really need to put in more effort than usual, exams are really tough and you do have to teach yourself most of the material because in class you just skim over the material, every class is new topics never reviewing.
It's 312, the class is going to be hard no matter who you have. But, with Donna, there were no surprises on the exams, if we didn't do it in class, it was not on the exam. Her door was open almost every day of the week, so she was super accessible. You will learn the most from her, in comparison to other 312 profs, but you have to participate.
I was hospitalized for panic attacks induced by her.
An A student here but realy struggled in her class. She talks at you rather than teaches. Group projects had 0 guidance and grading criteria was unclear. Fought so hard just for a B. Didn't find her understanding. It was her first semester teaching 201, take someone else.
Donna is the BEST prof I have ever had here. She is very tough but she wants you to learn and understand the material. If you are serious about AC and want to learn and put in effort, you NEED to take her. She is a CPA and the AC advisor and she knows her stuff. She is super sweet and hilarious. I highly, highly recommend her!
She was really tough, but was fair. The class was a slogfest, especially with 60% of the grade being the exams. Very tough to keep up, and class moves quick. However, she is very accessible for office hours, and I strongly recommend going throughout the semester. Many people dropped out due to poor grades, but ultimately, it is possible to pass.
I've never struggled so much in a class. She goes insanely fast throughout the lectures, gets frustrated with students in front of the whole class even during exams, and is just an aggressive person. Very intense as well. Tests are pretty hard and you gotta study a ton.
I have never seen anyone with the temperament and passion like Donna has. She's just built different. Would not recommend taking her class. If you do take it t
She would never tell us what was on the exam, blaming the "course coordinator," but the other 201 professors did. Not sure why she had it out for us; said "cover my fanny" a lot, which was pretty uncomfortable. Her homework wasn't bad, but she made this class much more difficult than it had to be.
She is a great professor who knows the material very well, but man oh man, there is TONS of work. She is very nice and wants to help, but lots of HW, quizzes are take-home but closed-note and due the night before class - one for every chapter. Two group projects which are challenging. Two tests and final is not cumulative. You will WORK for the A!
She was amazing and is so passionate about tax, but her exams are very tough and you will need to work for an A. She gives you partial credit if you show your work. She is hilarious but her lectures can be long and boring considering the content. She wants to see you succeed and will work with you.
If you are not religious, pick one and start praying.
Prof. McConville is the one you want for tax, but she does have her problems. It can be hard to schedule time with her outside of class because she's always busy. She does not have review sessions for exams and proceeds to make them extremely difficult. However, she does allow many extra credit opportunities and does explain things well when asked.
