You have to work hard but she is passionate about what she teaches and goes out of her way to help her students.
Relax and do the work and you'll be fine and even learn something. She's also easy on the eyes.
she lets you rewrite your papers for a higher grade. she is very generous with her time and will talk you through your whole paper.
She tends to lose her train of thought when talking to the class. When she provides instructions for her essays/papers her directions are vague and she does not always give back rough drafts with her comments on time before the final essay is due.I would not suggest people take her course because she does not help students improve their writing.
I had her for my first class, and she was absolutely awesome! She was very understanding of a few iissues I was having. She also really seems to care about her students and wants them to learn. I highly recommend taking her.
This professor is awesome. She is completely dedicated to her students and sensitive to their issues. She is beautiful inside and out. I would highly recommend her.
The class is heavily focused on reading and her essays were a pain to write. She is very strict in grading and her directions are very vague. Her course is different from other Hunter Eng120 teachers. The research paper requires a lot of research. She does offer "second chances" but they're not worth it. This teacher should just be a last resort.
Crystal clear. Super attentive. Hard, but worth it. Seems like a higher level class. Great professor.
awesome
extremely awesome
This does not fell like a fresmhan level course. Take her if you want to feel like you're at an ivy league.
Amazing. Challenging. Brilliant. Definitely take it if you want to get a more challenging intro class.
Brilliant and inspiring. She doesn't suffer fools. Don't take her if you want a pat on the head. Take this professor if you want to do the kind of work you never thought you could. I loved this class.
I loved this class. Take it if you want to be challenged and inspired.
Great professor.
Definitely take this class if you are willing and want to "do some real thinking" as she says. She is adorable and quite gorgeous if you're not expecting a vacuous Hunter grad student but a refined and intelligent woman who knows something of the world.
She's a very critical grader, and she makes you think extremely hard. Her paper's are hard to write, and you end up slaving your nights away just to get a C. Her feedback is vague, which didn't really help. I learned through her worksheets, BUT those actually made me a better academic writer. If you think you're ready, your not. Be cautious.
Just came across this. she is challenging. so guess what, you actually learn something. This one one of the most challenging but rewarding courses and one of the best professors i have had in a long time. She's great.
Anyone who thinks otherwise should not be in college. Paparella is one of the best you will find. She doesn't teach like a prerequ course but that''s your problem.
She really does make you think hard. However, she does not give specific feedback, therefore you're on your own in terms of learning how to better your writing. Even when you do take the little feedback she gives, your grade does not change.
Extremely stressful. The length and amount of assignments given in this class are ridiculous, not to mention the amount of readings she gives on top of these assignments. If your grade isn't up to par on your first few essays, don't be too worried. She likes to see growth, and perhaps that is why she is such a tough grader. She can be a bit rude.
Great professor! Took her two semesters in a row, inspired me to major in english. If you maintain a good relationship with her and do what's assigned, it's not a tough class. Shes a little disorganized at times. Offers many office hour opportunities to help work on papers but have to have specific questions.
Changed my life.
She's tough, but it's worth it. While I was taking the course, I thought the work was needlessly tedious, but I definitely feel like a stronger writer thanks to her. It wasn't an easy A, but it's so worth it. She can come off as rude sometimes, but honestly it's because she's so passionate about the subject, and she truly wants everyone to succeed.
If you are looking for an easy professor then Paparella is definitely not what you're looking for. She is a good professor but sometimes she doesn't explain things in an organized way and it takes too long for her to come to the point. But the readings are good but get ready to do a lot of work. She's really helpful and steps out of her way to help
The class is writing intensive so don't be surprised by the work load. If you're looking to really improve yourself and learn, she's great. she really tries and is great. Sometimes confusing, i really enjoyed taking this class.
While taking 120 I didn't realize how helpful it was. Like many of the students in my class, I was annoyed that I had to retake the class despite my AP Credit. I have finally recognized how awesome she was and how much she taught me. Her thoughts on editing have completely changed my writing! She's there for her students long after the class.
My first semester was spent in her 120 class. She's quirky in a way but at times she's all over the place. The assignment dates are often changed, expect to revise your own essays in class along with revising your classmates essays as a group exercise. Lots of writing in preparation for the final essay along with her regular essays. LOTS OF WORK.
Great professor. She is passionate about literature. This class is not easy but if you work for it you will definitely get a good grade. At first I wasn't doing so good but then i reviewed her comments on my work and asked questions in the lecture and started getting A's.
You will do well in this class as long as you participate and show some sort of effort. Her questions are confusing sometimes. But besides that, she's a good professor.
I took a class with her during my first semester. At the time, I dreaded it - she gave many reading & writing assignments, and sometimes class discussions were very frustrating. But she gave great feedback and was very willing to help. Looking back now, I am very thankful to have had her - her teachings are still helping me write for other classes.
She means well, she really does. She is very passionate and loves the subject she teaches. However, she can come off as very confusing at times, and leaves her students puzzled with her assignments and her lectures. She can be demoralizing at times as she is very blunt and expressive with her words. Be ready to read and be ready to write, a lot.
This was one of my favorite classes. The professor presented the works in the most interesting ways. The class trip was great. Highly recommend!
Professor Paparella is an absolutely fantastic professor, and I recommend her to literally anyone who has the opportunity to take her class. She truly cares about the students doing well, and tries very hard to help you improve your writing. It's very likely that you will leave her class a better writer.
This was one of my favorite classes because the professor was so knowledgeable and passionate about the material she was teaching. She showed up to class incredibly prepared and dedicated -- and asked the same from her students. There was a fair amount of reading -- it was not always what you would expect but made the course much more interesting.
It was great to take a course in which the professor knew so much and was so dedicated to her students. We did not just read children's literature, but literature that represented children. The course was even better than I expected. The professor was flexible with the materials. But, what I liked best was the course's overarching narrative.
Took her for english 120, great professor! Helped me improve my writing. She was a fair grader. Class was never boring. The work load wasn't that much in my opinion, if you put in effort you'll get a good grade. MUST show up to class, if not you'll fail.
my first couple of weeks in this class wasn't very fun for me since there is a lot of reading and writing to do, but as the semester went on, it got more enjoyable and shes a really great professor! even though she is a tough grader, she gives great feedback shes always willing to help you. just dont skip class or be late because the lectures help!
She is probably the most caring/nicest professor I have ever had. She gives a bit of work but she gives amazing feedback. She genuinely cares when a person doesn't understand something and has plenty of office hours available. She's super nice and I've taken this class as well as English 220 with her, if I could, I'd take more classes with her.
Paparella is really sweet however she gives A LOT OF WORK and she moves WAY too fast. Her classes are nice and pretty interesting but i would not want to take her again. There was way too much work and honestly she rarely gives back work and gives it back really late.
Professor Paparella is amazing. Sometimes the work is hard, but it's always interesting and your writing will improve tremendously. She gives the best feedback and really cares about each student doing well. She is very generous with her time and will meet with you as much as you need. I'm already taking another class with her in the fall.
Professor Paparella is extremely helpful and is a great teacher. She always comes to class prepared and is extremely willing to work with you outside of class/ in OH. She also passionate about the subject and very knowledgeable. It is true that there is a lot of reading, but class discussion is really helpful in guiding you. Would take again!
You get a decent amount of work but it's doable. Professor Paparella will help you if you go to her during her office hours and your writing will improve.
Professor Paparella will make you a better writer. She deserves much credit, take her because you won't regret it. She is patient and kind and pays attention to her students needs. Don't miss class and you will be inspired by her! Seems like a great mommy too!
I dont understand what people are saying about her. Yeah sure shes a nice enough woman but I have never been physically angry with a course before this one. If you do everything required of a paper shell give you a B. Its only after working an entire 24 hours on one paper do you have a chance of an A. Also too much reading and totally disorganized.
Though I can spend time talking about Paparellas disrespectful tendencys, I wont. She is not an easy A, you will work for it and you will most likely fail. Good thing is that she allows for revisions, thats about the only thing she has going for her. If I ever take a class with her again, itll be too soon.
This was my second class with Prof. Paparella. She is one of the most inspiring and knowledgable teachers you could have. Lots of reading but always interesting. Hard sometimes but she is always available for extra help. One of the most caring professors you will ever meet.
By the end of Professor Paparella's classes, you will be a much better reader, and writer. This is a great course with a professor with much expertise who goes above and beyond for every student. It is not always easy, but it is always worth it. 2 short papers and 1 research paper. Easy pop quizzes if you do the reading. Great class discussions!
Profosser Paparella is nice, but she has a very specific way of thinking and is bad at hiding the fact that she disagrees with your points. for example, if youre saying something she doesn't necessarily agree with, she makes a face (you'll know what I'm talking about) and she will question you A LOT. Her grading isn't super fair, either.
Intelligent & nice woman but likes playing devil's advocate too much. Means well but comes off condescending. Class discussions were nice. Not very clear about what she wants for assignments & will probably give you a B/B- on them. Readings are interesting but there are a lot of them. I would maybe take again
Super nice and intelligent. A lot of reading but all good. Genuinely cares about her students and will go out of her way to help them do well.
Such an amazing professor. shes smart and funny and genuinely wants each student to succeed. You will treasure her insights into the texts you read and will become a better analytical writer. Fun class trips too! Take Professor Paparella, you wont regret it.
She was an okay professor. Tough grader but she gives extension and good feedback. She has this thing where she only accepts answer that matches her own during lecture, and that gets a bit annoying. But overall she is sweet and would take time to meet with you outside of class. Not a lot of essays but pop quizzes here and there but its not hard.
Seems like a nice person yet something is a bit off. Never returned any papers, I felt a bit lost in the class. Sweet personality in class but have seen her be mean to students in 1-on-1 interactions. I am confused on how I feel so I'll say average. Workload was fair, open-note midterm was very fair. Overall not terrible, but not very engaging.
So she isn't the worst teacher ever, but she is kind of annoying. She gets tight when people don't participate. If you do your work and participate you will be fine, but she is a hard grader on papers. She can just be a little annoying because she expects a lot and then won't grade papers on time and stuff like that.
I loved this class and this professor. Readings and discussions were great. Work was fair. She always made time to meet during office hours and wrote me a great recommendation for grad school.
Amazing professor. Really intelligent and caring. Super helpful and dedicated especially one on one. Class is discussion based and readings are interesting and relevant. This class piqued my interest in childrens literature. Office hours can get crowded because Professor Paparella is always available for her students. I highly recommend!
I took her for literature this semester and she was great overall. She is very kind and cares about your progress, giving you many opportunities to meet with her to help you. She grades fairly, but it helps to participate in class and do your best on her papers with her feedback. I enjoyed this class bc she really made me think. Would recommend.
Professor Paparella is a really smart and kind professor. She makes you want to participate and shes very clear on what she expects on her papers which is a blessing and a curse. You dont really have the chance to free write because she wants papers done in a specific way. She also does not grade papers on time. Overall shes a good choice !
No problems with this prof, she was just really disorganized over the summer online course. Started late, seemed distracted, got off on tangents. It was a fun class overall but she's a little bit of a frustrating prof if you prefer structured classes with a clear agenda. Clearly passionate about literature, at least! Just needs more organization.
Expect to have your camera on every class. She gets upset when you dont participate. Assigns a lot of assignments but many of them ungraded unless they are final drafts. Answers emails and questions frequently. Has office hours you schedule through email. Very approachable when it comes to assignments. Expects everything to be done at the due date
At first her class really annoyed me but at the end of the semester even I saw the improvement so just be patient. She's really nice and I wanted to take her again for ENGL 220 but the timing doesn't match my schedule. She gives 2 short essays and 1 research paper. She won't grade your work at first but you still have to submit everything.
Shes a very sweet professor who has a very nice flow in her class. The classes seem very easy but beware thats how you fail. It takes two months for feedback and grades and had no idea I was failing until I got my grade posted. I attended all the classes and did all the assignments on time. I got 80s/90s on all assignments but somehow got an F.
This professor has poor time management (takes a very long time to grade essays). Be aware, she will give you 70s and 80s on essays if your writing does not align with her own interpretations. She assigns a lot of reading, but class participation is not mandatory. She is a nice person, but save your gpa and take a different professor if you can.
Vague expectations with vague feedback. If you want to take a class that will require you to have the exact same beliefs and interpretations as the professor, then this is the one for you.
i took this class as a morning class, ngl she gave a lot of expectations. And as much as i love being pushed i felt like it was being too pushed. she really wants you to participate a lot which is a good thing. i really didnt like how the syllabus was changed all the time like almost every week. i was always confused and missed out on a lot.
If you have the opportunity pls do not take her. Worst professor ever, assignments every week along with quizzes, got annoyed when no one was participating, doesn't give you feed back, and doesn't grade on time so you dont know if you're failing, a lot of group projects, too many papers and had a passive aggressive attitude.
was extremely passive aggressive and did not engage appropriately with the class. was unprofessional numerous times and extremely unclear. assigned an insane amount of excessive homework for a class that is an intro class , she is fully aware none of us are english majors. unclear about said excessive work, then rude when confused about it. awful.
Responds to questions very condescendingly so don't let that deter u from asking. Not willing to accommodate anything really. She's probably going to make u guys perform Hamlet. Yes, like a theater class. Emails within 2 days (usually). Always talked way past the class time. Will only give 50% worth of days attendance if ur l8. Good luck soldier.
For me this class wouldn't have been too hard if there was another teacher teaching it. Professor Paparella is a really tough grader she automatically fails you if you don't reach your page minimum on your essays. She also gives a bunch of homework with additional individual classwork that is expected to be done by the next class.
She assigns many assignments but grades only 3 which are her main essays. She makes you submit drafts but never gives you direct feedback and gets upset when we do not meet her expectations. Very passive aggressive and makes you hate English. I saw some literary improvement in myself following the class however I would never take it again.
Professor Paparella was the worst professor I ever took; going into that class would legit give me anxiety because of how rude she can be with her students. She would give lots of homework that weren't graded, and gave very vague details about the essays with high expectations. I ended up having to drop the class because a W is better than a F.
She's very passive aggressive, will cut you off mid sentence and has no problem telling you your answer is wrong. This can make a student never want to participate again. She can also be condescending. This course wasn't hard for me but I will say her analysis of the books were helpful. Be prepared to act out Hamlet and work in groups.
She is very egotistical and is quick to shut down students ideas if it's not up to her standards. Ironically, she gets annoyed when people don't participate. She shows extreme passive aggression throughout the lectures, and gives lots of hw that isn't even included in the final grade. I wouldn't advise taking her if you're trying to build your GPA.
This Professor tends to accepts responses and ideas that she would have thought of herself; almost everything else is a misinterpretation. However, she does push you to write clearer and stronger. She has a doc FULL of links and it's very useful if you take the time to look through it.
I would recommend avoiding her at all costs unless you like condescending people. The homework assignments made zero sense, and you didn't know what homework was half the time. She is rude to people especially is you didn't want to participate for the day.
Extremely condescending, passive aggressive, and rude. She requires online annotations for readings, but doesn't allow technology in class... confusing. Control freak; she belongs in a high school classroom because she does not know how to treat adult students like adults. Please know how to handle this kind of person before enrolling.
Doesn't grade work on time. She shows up late to class and then takes off points if you're late too. She is condescending and rude. She doesn't let kids use the bathroom… throw subs at the students. She rolls her eyes at you when you come late. Her syllabus is a mess. She only wants you to think what she thinks… even if you are right. STAY AWAY.
She seems nice at first but she's so rude, and condescending, and very passive aggressive. She doesn't let you pee which is crazy cuz we in college. Literally yelled at a student for calling her Ms. Like it wasn't that serious. So much reading. Syllabus is a hot mess and so long plus she changes it all the time. Grades slowly. Don't take her class!
The professor can be very unorganized and can sometimes target certain students. Makes me feel uncomfortable and like im hated by the teacher During lectures she tends to go off track talking about something very unrelated to the topic. She tends to get mad if you walk out to use the restroom. anytime a student walks out she gives them a hate stare
Please avoid her at all costs. She is condescending and annoying, and she doesn't respect her students at ALL. If you value ur time, sanity, self-respect, and grades, avoid her. i know a few people that she made them fail certain papers which they had no fault whatsoever
STAY AWAY! This is the worst class I have ever taken. She makes you not want to participate or do anything in that class. She is so rude and rolls her eyes all the time. Don't take this class.
If you want to keep your GPA high, don't bother taking this class. There are so much more opportunities with other great professors who care to teach and have a passion to teach. She is so passive aggressive. She gets upset when you walk out to use the bathroom...Stay away,
Stay far away from this class. Save yourself a headache and find a better professor. She gets upset when you walk out to use the bathroom and rolls her eyes all the time. She wants you to write and think the way she writes and thinks. Stay AWAY…
Do not take, like literally don't. Nobody should take her class. And this is coming from a straight A student, she WILL ruin ur GPA.. unless u get lucky. RUNNN. Syllabus=mess. Teacher=rude. She grades so harsh.. For my 18 years of life I always loved English, but since I took her class.. NO.
Not open to other students ideas. Only cares about her own interpretation and wants you to write how she wants. CONDESCENDING & BORING! Doesn't know how to teach or engage students well.
don't take this class like even the most dedicated smart students are mentally challenged
idk why there aren't more people talking about her, but I ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF U VALUE YOUR LIFE SANITY AND UR GRADES PLEASE AVOID
Looking at this page was so validating!!! She genuinely made me cry during a meeting. Aside from that, she is condescending and doesn't listen to student interpretation. Grades harshly and doesn't give feedback, so you don't know what she wants.
This professor makes you feel very pressured to match her expectations, and I did feel that way as someone who passed English I. When I didn't do well on the first paper, I felt intimidated by her during a meeting about it. The material also just wasn't clicking me. All of this was enough for me to drop out of the course instead of ruining my GPA.
Honestly talks to much and she cares about herself a lot. I don't care about your son . But it alright class i won't be taking this class I ever have the chance.
This professor assigns homework every single week, twice a week, due by the next class. She's impossible to communicate with; she doesn't value anyone else's opinion but hers. She will yell at students in class rather than pulling them aside and speaking to them outside of class. Very demanding on work and physical books.
