Not focused
Lectures all over the place. Not friendly.
good lectures, however, sometimes she can belittle you

Wonderful; so energetic. Gives content quizes - not nice, but reading gets done.

Wonder for Professor, knowns her stuff and makes it enjoyable!!!
Lectures are fun and interesting. Knows her stuff!!

She's out there with her sci-fi....
VERY hard marker. Thinks she is the only one with a valid opinion.

Worst prof ever. Grade based on sucking up.
Moderately hard marker. She'll give you a break if you try.
regurgitation is required sucking up preferred
She knows what she likes and Loves to talk about it.It's a good thing all the writers she loves so much were able to express themselves because no one in her class will ever be aloud to! Note to her future students: SUCK UP!!
AWFUL. She picks favorites in class, and she's an unfair marker.
Friendly. Was kinda scatter brained at the beginning of the semester. Grades on how much she likes you, so you have to speak up in class.
nice prof but extreamly hard marker. the only mark i got in her class was 48. in-class and outta class. red ink baby!! however, she absolutly loves science fiction and fantacy, inspired me to read more.
If you can get another slot do it...Marking scheme unclear...Instructions on exams are confusing to say the least...Would not recommend.
Great readings! Great person! the class suks, half the time you can't get any notes down cause she talks so fast. Extremely unclear about what she wants. Extremely hard to get a good mark...Don't take her course unless you have too!
She's a very nice lady, but way to obsessed with english. Very hard marker, picks favorites...those who speak up in class. She talks way too fast to take sensible notes, BUT on the bright side, she's nice and will give you a bit of a break if you try

I have one word for this Prof:"BREATHE". She is an extremely hard marker. You will not get a good mark from her unless you are one of her favorites. The mark you begin with is the one you will see for the rest of the term. She is extremely scatt
I never got less than an "A" in English before taking this course, in which I passed with a "C+". If you want to do well in her class sit in the front and answer everything she asks!!!
Very hard to get a decent mark if you want a good mark sit up front or be someone that she knows.
an example of favortism at work. don't get on her bad side or ask her for anything b/c she'll try to rip you apart. she must be really insecure or perhaps she is simply the devil.
Very hard and unfair marker. Never got less than an A or high B in English before her.
One of the best profs I have ever had honestly. Hard marker yes, but she really tries to make the class fun. There are much harder profs, trust me.
Excellent prof! Enthusiastic about her subject! A hard marker, but you get what you deserve (It's not favouritism, trust me). Pay attention in class, read *all* the books, and ask questions if you need something clarified.
Very unhelpful professor. Definitely has favourites in the class. Avoid this woman if you want to do well. She is bitter!!!!
I'm very surprised at some of the ratings. This prof is a lot of fun, keeps your attention and marks fairly. In response to the rating dated 10/27/04 - I'm in your class and your so-called 'favorites' are those that show an interest and participate. Don't blame the prof for your lack of interest.
This professor is a good teacher. However, she definitely has favorites in her class despite of what those in favour of her say. Must be some of the "teachers pets." She is a hard marker and will keep you at the same grade that you begin with. Good luck to all who decide to take her course!
I took this course a couple of years ago. Prof was well prepared, articulate, and fair. I got out of it what I put into it - moderate reading, analysis, and much memorization. Participation seemed appreciated and encouraged for everyone. Would highly recommend this prof and course. Just did!
She's a tough marker, but her classes are pretty good. She's also good to go to for course selection advice.
Lovely person, you're lucky to have a class with her.
Very hard marker, especially on in-class essays. Doesn't take into account time constraints or their cause of small errors due to them (ie, on in-class essays). Goes far too quickly over material, hard to know where she is in the material. Nice person though.
She is among the hardest markers that I have ever had in university but she is a very nice person. She is very helpful and accommodating. You really have to know your material in this class but she makes it interesting. I would recommend her to anyone though!!

This woman has her favorites, who all are at the top of the class. She is the hardest marker I've ever dealt with and extremely condescending toward us students who choose not to brown nose. She gives one low mark and it remains consistent.
A bit of a hard marker, it helps to talk to people about her and other profs.
Absolute worst experience with an english prof. ever. A's from other professors, but low marks from her. Does not add up.
Hard marker! The mark she gives you on your first assignment sticks....Please believe all reviews before deciding to take this course...She also has obvious favourites
I totally agree with the web posting marked 12/08/04. This prof sucks big time. For your own good stay away from her. She loves her favorites in class, and you know who you are. Im sure that they do good even if their work is crap. This does not mean that I am uninterested in the course either!
Avoid this prof at all costs. Very unforgiving, pretentious and ignorant. She picks her favorites and when you aren't one of them, she doesn't bother giving you the time of day. Worst experience with a prof so far at MUN.
Well what can I say to describe this woman or should I call her a beast...hard marker, certain favorites in class, and oh lets not forget the fact that the mark that you get in the beginning is the one that will stick with you. SO to you poor students who are stuck with this prof..Good luck to you!
What can I say the worst of the worst! She is the hardest marker in the entire university. The mark she gives you in the beginning is the one you will end up with in the end. I went to see her for extra help but it made no difference. She doesn't listen to you. She is NO help! Stay away from her!
I can't believe all the neagtive stuff on here about Donna! She's awesome - friendly, spunky, and passionate, and never dull in class. She knows her stuff, and makes it interesting to learn...even Chaucer! Yeah she's a tough marker, but when you get your A, you know damn well you deserved it!
Fabulous prof. The best one I've had from the English faculty. I'm an English Major and you can't get any better that DJ Walsh. Her tough marking only shows that you need to know your stuff to do well...shouldn't that be expected?!?!
worst prof ever
Dr. Walsh is they best English prof I've ever had and I'm doing another course with her in the fall. I've had many english profs, b/c I'm DOING English. She actually gives you the marks you deserve and gives you constructive feedback on how to improve. She's an HONEST marker, not a hard one. And if you keep getting bad marks, you deserve them.
Best English prof I've ever had. Love her enthusiasm! She's a very fair marker and gives good feedback. I've purposely signed up for course just because she was teaching them.
Dr. Walsh is one of the most approachable and concerned profs I have experienced. Her lectures are engaging and well constructed. She is very clear in her expectations and is as helpful as any professor should be. I highly recommend this prof to anyone interested in learning . . . if you are just hoping for an easy mark don't bother.
Worst prof ever... never take her courses unless you enjoy getting the lowest possible marks ever.
Great professor, but make sure you've done the readings and can answer questions during lecture. She will get noticeabley irritated if nobody answers her simple questions about the readings. Values intelligence and honesty in her students. Very fair marker, but her writing is quite illegible.
good teaching ability, and easy to get along with
I know that Donna has a big fan club, and they are quick to say how wonderful and fair she is, but they are surely on her Favourites List. She is ridiculous and holds vendettas against students, no matter how hard they work. I am not stupid or illiterate. She marks me about 20% lower than the rest of the profs I have had.
Walsh is a great teacher who really wants all of her students to do all of the readings. She will be hard on you if you do not do the work. I was impressed by her enthusiasm and knowledge, and found her course engaging. She is a tough but fair professor.
Terrific, personable and charming. Stimulates learning through fun class interaction. Funny as clowns eating ball bearings, in the good way.
Great Prof. Clear and very helpful with defining important material, and not so important material. Drawbacks: sometimes goes off on tangents, or rambles about a topic. Nothing to be scared about.
you’re a person who likes to take a class where you are not aloud to think for yourself and can regurgitate everything she says you will do fine. She focused on minor details of materials (i.e. what was the elf wearing when he spoke to…) She extinguished any creativity in the class and only wants you to agree with her. BAD PROF.
she loves the subject and topic of the course. very enthusiastic but overall i would say a very bad prof to have for english. very hard to do well in quizes and she marks the essays really hard. she only will except answers that agree exactly to her own. hard to get a good mark. DONT TAKE IT!
This prof picks favourites from the very beginning. I'm an English major and I've never had a problem with marks in my classes, until her. I've read all the novels, and did all the assignments with care, but it doesn't get me anywhere. If bring up your own ideas or don't agree with her, well you're wrong. It's frustrating.
This Prof is ridiculous! Take any other course but this. More than likely you will not do good. She is extremely hard to please, very hard marker, quizes are difficult and her lectures are all over the place. She does not help you at all when you go to her. Worse prof I've had at MUN.
Worst prof I've had to date. In class, nothing was actually taught, she just rambled on about the out of class readings. Every single piece of work I got graded with her, I received a 65, regardless whether I worked hard on it for weeks or slapped it together in an hour. Avoid class with her at all costs.
i love this prof! i agree she is not an easy prof but she is fair. if u do the work u get the grades! as for being helpful and approachable she is without a doubt both! i recommend any course with her to any student who is willing to do the work required if u want to slack then stay away. overall Donna Walsh is great!
I can see why her favourites would like her, but if you're not a huge suck-up then I would stay away. I took this class purely because I love English. Not a good idea! She makes those who ask questions in class feel stupid and assumes you've previously read books in other classes that aren't required and incorporates them into her lectures. boo
I'd be pulling high B's/A's in fourth year english courses, and low B's/high C's in her second year classes. Unless the every other english prof at the university doesn't know what they're doing, she is an unfair marker. She didn't like me personally, so I got bad marks. Simple as that. Your mark hinges on how agreeable she personally finds you.
Very energetic and student-friendly approach to the material. I found her quite approachable for clarification of points covered and a fair marker. I have taken many courses by Prof Walsh and would recommend her to other students.
Terrible experience. Picks favorites. Her comments provided on paper are nearly incomprehensible and just rambles on about usless, unrelated things in class. I would avoid.
I don't feel that she marked based on her favorites because she seemed to like me. However she was a horrifically hard marker. My main problem with the class was the quizlets for each book, which consisted of the most minute nitpick little details, pretty much requiring you to memorize the book.
Worst prof experience so far. Horribly condescending and scary. Gets frustrated when the class refuses to contribute, yet she undermines everything the students say and makes you feel stupid - if she hears you. Makes examples of people in class regularly and looks down at people using laptops (makes them sit in the back). Avoid at all costs.
Unquestionably the worst professor I have had in all of my years at MUN. She is condescending, rude, incompetent, and surprisingly quite unintelligent. Of all those attributes, the rudeness is perhaps the most obvious. Now there are some amazing profs at MUN -- Gordon Jones, Shane O'Dea, R.K.L. Panjabi. But Walsh is one of the absolute worst.
terrible prof
I actually really enjoyed Prof Walsh's classes and thought she was a great instructor. The class I had was small, but it also wasn't all English majors, and I never felt that she was condescending. In fact, the class was fairly relaxed and she helped make it entertaining; I can only recommend it!
This professor has reignited my love for reading literature. I was completely turned off it from other courses until I took hers. Her knowledge of the subject matter is wide and nuanced, and she loves to see class discussions-- too bad that half the time nobody read the books and so couldn't contribute.
Goes off topic in class frequently. Very vague expectations when it comes to exams and assignments. Seems to pick favorites in class. Comments left on work were pretty much illegible. The mark I had on my first exam has stuck ever since, despite my efforts to improve. She's enthusiastic about the material but I would not recommend her to anyone.
I'm a little late in posting my opinion on Donna Walsh, but am going to none the less. I honestly liked her. She assigned some pretty damn good novels.. Great Gatsby, Catch 22, The Things They Carried. Hell, some of my favorite American novels of all time. Any who, she has an evil way about her on the surface but is actually one of the coolest prof
I love English and some of the novels she picked were fantastic, bu some were horrible. Her quizzes are absolutely impossible! She asks the most random facts, but as a prof she's not completely horrible. Essay grading is fair, but the quizzes were the worst.
wonderful prof, great lecturer! very fair marker and just an overall nice person. She hates texting in class, so dont do it. She can be mean, but only if you really deserve it. She genuinely wants you to do well - highly recommend!
I found her to be very rude, unapproachable, and an unfair marker. Wether I threw together a garbage in-class essay that I was unprepared for or spent days working on a well-written paper, I got the same grade every time.
Donna was extremely helpful and if you go to see her she will answer any questions you have! She genuinely wants everyone to do well. By far my favourite lecturer in all of my degree tells you everything you need to know in order to write good papers so attendance is a must! Overall, a definite recommendation for a 4000 level course!
She is an interesting lady. Lectures are entertaining, and she definitely knows what she's talking about. She can be a little rude, frowning upon those with computers and making them sit in the back. She is a tough grader, but is interested in helping students who ask. I almost failed the first in class assignment, and got an A on the term paper.
She has to be the best prof that I have ever had at MUN. Her grading can be a little tough, but she will do whatever she can to help you if you show interest. She is very nice and approachable. My essay writing has improved greatly since I began taking courses with her.
Dr. Walsh is an enthusiastic professor that tries to get the class involved. If you volunteer in class, even if you're wrong she'll correct you but not in a degrading way. She is hard on people with laptops as she doesn't want others distracted but so are other profs alike with cell phones. I think that she is a great prof though a hard marker.
Prof. Walsh's lectures were always very passionate and informational--it is clear that she cares about the material she is teaching. Alternatively, she does not handle occurrences of mental health issues or bereavement well. Certain situations (i.e. asking for an extension, asking for help) could've been handled with more care.
Very condescending and rude prof, and also a very bad teacher. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
At first Donna appeared to be an eager and passionate prof but as soon as the semester really got going, lectures consisted on her discussing the novels with only a handful of students. Course material was very interesting but Donna was very focused on her own ideas and does not care for the ideas of others. Extremely hard marker.
One positive is she provided links and access to texts online, so we didn't have to purchase all of them from the bookstore which was a nice break in terms of cost. Other than that, not much positive I can say about her as her expectations are ridiculously unclear. Strange grading and bad at communicating with students about it. Would avoid!
It's hard to describe Dr Walsh. She's an admirable professor and shows great passion for English - particularly the American novel. What struck me as odd was how she picked out certain students in the class who had taken former classes she'd offered. With this, her quizzes asked what we could not answer-small details like the colour of a wall.
I wouldn't recommend taking Dr. Walsh if you're pursuing an English major. I am close to graduating and I couldn't bear her lectures. She will only pick on the same people when she asks a question, and forget constructive criticism on your papers. She'll tear 'em apart but won't offer advice on how to fix them. AVOID.
Dr. Walsh knows her subject matter, but focusses too much on the minor details the novels she required us to read. Dr. Walsh's quizzes contained very specific paragraphical questions, yet her final exam contained subject matter not even covered in class. I suggest you only take Dr. Walsh if you are highly familiar with AMERICAN English.
