Hallstone is ok, but very structured (We never got out early unless he made 3 mistakes, etc). I ended up droping his class.
A very different character, but loves math to the core. His tests are very difficult, but if you get decent scores on those and do your homework, you'll be fine.
good teacher nice, fair and helpful.
Tests were tough, he was structured but his enthusiasm for the subject made the class. I took it as a way to prep for Stats at the University and it was worth it. Because he was so tough, I pretty much was able to slide through 80% of the university level stats pt 1 course and 50% of the part 2. Thanks for making my stats at the university a breeze Donnie!!!!!
wont work with you much at all if you copy the answer from you work to the answer box, you still lose full points. doesnt seem to care much about teaching, just wants to be the judge of your work. my guess is he couldnt get a better job elsewhere.
stats is fun, it's easy. hallstone is a good teacher. i think he's pretty easy going. hes never missed a day of exercising in like... 10 years.
You Rock! The excerise is working, keep it up! I think math geeks are hot and his t-shirts are awesome!
Great teacher and very helpful.
Explained the difficult concepts fairly well. Even brought in wooden models to help us visualized the 3D shape we were trying to calculate the volume of. Great guy.
He went through notes quickly and was not very clear. 2 hours of homework for every hour of class yeah right some people have lives. He had a good heart but not very good at going slower for people who didnt understand.

This guy is ****ing cool! He is such a great math teacher if you really want to learn the subject. He's really great when you need help and doesn't make you feel stupid at all. Just try hard and you'll do great.
Donnie's awsome and very helpful!
Great teacher! He amazes me with how knowledgeable he is with Math, he really knows the subject. I have taken a couple of his math classes and he is very fair and reasonable.
HARD.
He is hard but fair. If you got good scores on the tests, made the group work, homeworks, and quizzes, you will be in a good shape. By the way, he is funny and lovable :D
He is an awesome teacher! very funny! and wears funny tshirts too :D but you've gotta work very hard in his class. homework takes forever, but as long as you read the book and understand all of the examples he does on the board and talks in class about, you'll be fine for the test.
Though many students think hus class is difficult, I think he is so funny and easygoing. Actually, he has so many extra credits waiting for students to get. If you are interested in math and statistics, you will find fun and simple in his class,
Tons of homework, both paper homework and online homework. His exams are difficult but if you do the Pre-test and online homework carefully, you'll get a good grade (>90%). Near the end of the quarter, he sometimes gives out free post-it (a.k.a sticky notes, extra credits) for those who come to class. His T-shirts are super cool too.
he is a very good teacher... Kinda fun too... Many homeworks but its very helpful^^
He gets really distracted by students and events outside of class and tends to talk in circles. He also goes off on tangents a lot and in turn confuses students. I found it easier to teach myself from the book and then ask direct questions!
He was very understanding and helpfull, and i am glad i took the class from him!
I enjoyed his class very much. You just need to do the homework and not slack off. Overall, a good teacher because he's so nice and always willing to help. What a cute little man!
This class is very tough, but definitely worth it. I learned a lot!
He's a wonderful teacher I've ever had. Even though his class is hard at first, you'll be fine when you get familiar with his work. If you really want to study, take his class !
He went fast and was unclear on many concepts. Most people arer taling 3 to 4 classes, and cant spend 2 hours on one class per night. He jumps around to much and when we finaly get to the homework we are 3 chapters ahead and are stuggiling to keep up. Hes a nice guy, but not the greatest teacher.
He's forgets some of us haven't had math in a while and will give hwk(it's due a few days later) and immediately move to another chapter! by the time hwk is due we've all forgotten how to do it b/c we are 2 chpts ahead of it! He also goes from 1 ex to another and doesn't allow adequate time to absorb and ask ?'s. not everyone can meet w/ him 4 help
Super smart! HE was really helpful. I took s flex class so I din't do much interaction with him. But homework was set up fairly through hawkes and on test days he wore super cool t shirts.
Donnie is an amazing professor, although I found the class extremely difficult. He kept it interesting, even though there is a lot of homework, all in all a good class. I just found the topic extremely boring, rigorous and hard in general
I found statistics very interesting before this class. I have always been a good math student. Donnie doesn't teach material. He expects you to read the book and learn it on your own. He has very poor communication skills and frequently loses his train of thought. It is very hard to keep up in this class and I wouldn't reccomend him to anyone
Statistic is a hard subject for me since I haven't learnt it b4. However, I think Donnie is extremely helpful & his teaching style is great. Do your HW, attend to class everyday, go to his office to ask questions (although you have to wait for a while, it's worth). I'm not good at math, but I found his class interesting. Let's challenge ourselves.
He is a hard teacher and I spend the first half of the class confused, I did try tutors and asked him questions, his answers made me feel more confused. I am good at math too. He also is rude in that he pulls up this website and makes fun of what others have said IN CLASS. He could use some of the advice that people have left.
This is a self-selected survey: account for any bias! Donnie is very excited about math and [especially] statistics. He will give you all you need to succeed in the course. As always, it is up to the student to study independently if they want a decent grade. Bring money to class: there's a chance you might win some of his.
He's not very clear and really doesn't teach anything.
Really helpfull and understanding
Mr. Hallstone is a teacher that expects you to know the material he is teaching before he teaches it. He gets confused often in class and will often ramble on incoherently all class period leaving the vast majority of students dumfounded.
This course is A LOT of work. Mr. Hallstone is a great instructor, but I highly recommend that you thoroughly read the text as well as take attentive notes in class. He is known for giving extra credit to those whom volunteer in class, so speak up!
Very helpful in class and during office hours. Gets distracted by distractions in class very easily. Scares you in the beginning of the quarter by saying you need to study two hours a day, but its more like half an hour. More like a hybrid class, with learning from Stats Portal.
hes not completely clear with what he says but when you ask questions he explains. To get a good grade, you have to work, hard. its not an easy A, but you get what you work for.
He is a wonderful teacher. Very strict but helpful.. Learned a lot
He's a very hard teacher. It was difficult for me to understand what was his main idea. I would not recommend him to anyone. I have never done so bad in any math class. He doesn't provide any notes. He expects you to know. Read the book thoroughly.
He loves math, loves learning, and really cares for his student's education. He is definitely not easy and you will have to work hard, but you will learn so much from him that it will be worth it. Also, i'd like to point out that he doesn't believe in the validity of voluntary sampling but i'm sure he'd like this review :)
Donnie is very passionate about math. If he ever goes off subject it still has something to do with math. He has more assignments than some professors but he also gives more extra credit than most. Tests are usually in the testing center so you are not pushed for time. I feel like I learned more from his class than I would have in other classes
He literally says, "hello class, ok now onto chapter 3." "Good morning class, ok, now onto chapter 7"....... He doesnt't teach and expects you to understand everything! If you're not a math genius don't take his class! However, his tests aren't too difficult to pass as long as you're paying attention. The textbook is completely useless.
Donnie is such a sweetheart. I adore him!His tests are tricky, but if you study form your homework and the study guide, you should be good. He is always willing to help you. He also gives decent extra credit opportunities!he is not bad like the others say, but his tests are challenging. you will learn a lot!
Donnie is very sweet. but very difficult. I have talked to many people who have taken precal with other teachers and they are much easier. He never gives breaks. As in he never does nice things like drop the lowest test score or allow retakes. For preparation for the final he gives you a packet of 287 problems and half of the stuff he never taught
the reviews for tests are not like the test!he expects you to study your homework as well, which is a real pain. The final is unreasonable on how he has you prepare for it. he makes the class way too difficult. you wont get a 4.0 unless you are great at math and have prior knowledge. he is unreasonable and should definitely lighten up.
Course was listed as a normal lecture class, but was only computer-based and had no in-class lectures. Professor was fairly unhelpful and difficult to approach. Always seemed stressed-out and impatient.
Professor Hallstone awards students who work hard with posteds and extra credits. What I love most is his sense of humor.
I took the Hybrid Math 72 class for professor Hallstone. At first I was scared because of the ratings I saw on here, but the class is too easy. He's a REALLY nice guy, though we are expected to teach ourselves the material. He's there only to answer questions, which I didn't mind. The software is all you need, and it's VERY HELPFUL. Easy A class.
Donnie was very clear in what was expected from the class and gave us reminders via email to make sure there was time to get your assignments completed. He is easy going and helpful.
Worst decision of my life. He is very unclear. He tries to be funny, but hes not. He over complicated everything. He gives reviews before the test which look nothing like the test. So don't even bother to study from those. He is definitely not a good teacher. Don't take his class EVER! You will learn nothing.
Donnie is a fantastic teacher. If you truly want to learn, take his classes. He is amazing. If you put the effort in, he will help you as much as he possibly can! Don't expect a high school class! That's not what it is. It's tough, but it's worth it! I would definitely take another class from him.
He was nice, and helpful if you talked to him after class, but his lectures themselves were pretty unclear. The homework was pretty easy, but there was a lot (as is to be expected from any Math class), but the tests were a PAIN. Definitely not my favorite teacher, but it could be worse.
Good teacher, willing to help at officer hours, gives a fair amount of extra credit
Here's a background about me: Math isn't one of my stronger subjects but I don't suck at it. I try hard and usually get 3.8-4.0 in math classes. My review: he is a little unclear, his lectures don't even help you. You learn a lot from the text than his lectures. Tests are so long and kind of hard, homework is easy.
He is very disorganized. Tests are nothing like the lectures or study guides. He gets off subject a lot. He does in class activities that have no benefit to the class. IF YOU TAKE HIM, PLAN to either fail or succeed without an understanding of the subject.
If you are mediocre at math, you will fail this class. His lectures are pointless because he makes no sense and you learn everything from this text. I
His lecture is confusing; he makes it difficult when it's actually not that hard. He requires you to do an additional group project, which also pointless and takes your times outside classes.
Don't take this class. It is a joke. Quite literally we laugh all class about the stuff he says. It Is an online class but expects you to come to class. You basically use three different textbooks and half the time don't know which one we are using. Gives so much homework. If you like homework this is the class for you. Cant manage distractions.
Donnie was a great teacher! It is obvious that he is passionate about statistics and he tries to pass that on to the class. Tests were semi-hard, but i'm not the best at math. Homework for this class is time consuming and there's a lot of it, but it's statistics, so that's to be expected no matter who you take.
He's a really nice guy and he really wants his students to learn. A LOT of extra credit. Free textbook. Wants early feedback from students. We had 4 exams, 1 Final, 1 group project and A LOT of assignments. Doing all the readings and homework will REALLY help you do well. Make sure you keep up with the class's pace and high workload. A challenge!
Ridiculous. I've always been mediocre at math but never in my life failed a math class. I got a 1.8 in his class. His lectures are useless, so all you have is the textbook and math center. Just no. Don't take him if you want to raise your gpa. I can only imagine an online class worse.
Mr. Hallstone was the easiest math teacher I've ever had at Green River. If you show up to class and pay attention, it is an easy 4.0. You can really tell that he is caring about his students and about statistics. He hands out extra credit post-it notes that you can use on tests if you participate. Overall, it was an easy class and I had no trouble
I do not understand the content clearly. The forum will help you if there are many people asking for questions. He gives a group project about finance which I think is not important. The video tutorial on wamap helped me more than his lecture. The reviewer helps understand the topic, but sort of not on the test. Take advantage of the extra creds!
Hallstone is a good guy, he wants his students to succeed and gives extra credit opportunities. His lectures can be all over the place and I didn't understand the content very clearly, but the online videos help a lot. Tests can be hard but are pretty straightforward. I worked hard and got a 3.8 and I struggle in math, so it's attainable.
He's not as bad as some say. Lots of homework, but it's manageable. The tests are very hard. They are taken outside of class, in the testing center. The positive side of this is that you have as much time as you need. I averaged around 3 hours, which was not fun, but I never got below a 96 on a test. Be persistent, and you will succeed.
Tests are hard, but if you DO want to learn, he is the best. Many homework and feedback. Very caring and eager when I went up to ask him questions. And as for the test, you get to have as many hours as you want, which is a bonus for me. Will take again so that I learn better with all the works he gives out.
Pros: - Nice guy - Seems like he's trying Cons: - Practice tests don't reflect actual tests - Makes relatively easy problems difficult - Wastes class time by passing out useless papers - Briefly explains SOME material - Excessive homework Unless you want to teach yourself the material, I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
he barely teach. he spend most time talking about the examples instead of the chapter. Hard to understand if you havent learn the stuff before. not recommended.
He is a nice teacher, but a lot of homework. Tests are hard and can't get high grade. Don't take his class.
I took his class last quarter. He gave not so much homework, both paper, and online homework. A lot of extra credit in homework and classes if you are hard-working. His explanations on lessons were a little hard to understand, but you can easily get it by reading the books before coming to class. No surprise quizzes in class, easy grader.
A lot of homework, and unclear formula explanation. The review exam is different to the exam you take. Work super hard when you are going to take this class.
Great teacher! As long as you ask questions, even when you are slightly confused, and read the textbook your are going to do great! The tests are not hard if you follow the advice in the first sentence. You get EC when you spot a mistake on the board or do his challenge HW problems! Also, FYI read the syllabus... there might be some EC in there ;-)
I love this guy! His stories about his idiosyncratic penchant for statistics are just so hilarious because, like I said, they're very unusual or "idiosyncratic". Overall, he gives lots of homework, gives lots of extra credit, and so yes, should be an easy A or A-. Also, unlike my other professors, he didn't go on political tangents, so thats good.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE!!! Hardest and most unclear professor that I ever had.
He was very nice and willing to answer every question that students had. Plus, he gave us a lot of opportunities to earn extra credits. But, his lecture was relatively unclear and if you dont preview the material, it might be difficult to understand.
Donnie is a very communicative instructor - he lays out his expectations for the class and follows them. His hybrid class does not require your attendance except for exams. If you are a motivated self-worker than this is the class for you - if you need a ton of guidance then I suggest taking a class that is more hands on.
Be prepared for lots of hw! His class alone is like a 16hr job. So if you have a job outside of his class or more classes then his and you are taking it online. Listen when I say dont even risk it if you care about your grade! Especially if you are thinking online.
I had taken an in-person class with this professor, but it could easily have become an online class due to the amount of online work/ videos/ reading done. He has A LOT of paper homework as well and his "study guides" are nothing like the actual tests. Talks slow too.
I'm a 3.78 student. The Sapling Learning system he uses is poorly utilized and has a bad UX. Hallstone gets sidetracked and mumbles during video lectures, which are tough to understand. I wish I had another hybrid instructor after reading the reviews here, but he was only option. I am adding to the poor rating. I advise seeking another instructor.
Donnie is alright-- his lectures and explanations are very clear. Doesn't give feedback on tests, you have to ask him directly. Many extra credit opportunities, such as spotting his mistakes on the board and doing some Math problems. Tests are not too difficult, but he sure does give lots of homework.
Donnie helped me a lot by telling me to try to be there every day. The Hawkes system is both good and bad. That isn't Donnies fault, but he makes himself available to help if you ask. He has a very nice demeanor. He knows his material as well. If you only show up on Test days you're going to be very challenged. Get into your TI-84 calculator
This class was totally manageable online. You can be lazy (skip through videos etc) & there are 50? late passes to push mini-assignments (6 a day?) to the next day. You will have to catch up & study eventually though. If you need help, go visit him! He loves seeing students engaged. There are ec forums & an optional group project to replace 1 test.
I was in his last in-person lecture before he retired and I must say it was an amazing experience. A LOT of homework but you do not need to do all of it to get a 4.0. Tests were simple, he makes his old tests available which were key to 100%+ grades. He offers TONS of extra credit. Stay on top of homework and take advantage of all the extra credit.
Had Donnie for his last quarter at GRCC. He was a wonderful professor. Very caring and was always there for me when I asked questions and needed help. The homework is all on Hawkes (you need access code). And you must come to class for the tests. All else you can do in class or from home in Hawkes. Not too hard, but you must work for it! :)
