Honestly, at the beginning at hated his class but towards the end, he actually seemed to care and helped us out. Make sure you STUDY HARD, do all the practice problems, study everything. He wasn't too horrible. You can definitely pass just stay on top of everything.
Really good instructor, always willing to help. The onl issue I see is that the class is test heavy so if you screw up once you better hope you do great on the final. He grades 10 quizzes which are super easy if you pay attention in the discussions. And overall his tests were pretty standard to his lectures. If you attend every class, an A is easy.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. You will learn nothing from him. Instead, you will teach yourself from Google and the textbook. If you have a question about something that you learned in a previous class instead of taking 30 seconds to answer it hell rant about how you mastered it in the previous course and this is a continuation of that course. AVOID HIM!
runn runn runnnnnnn! Do not take I am usually good at sciences, but wow not with chm2046. Your days will be filled with crying and studying!
This class is extremely textbook heavy, with that being said if you do the reading and extra textbook problems you will pass without any issues. His lectures have a lot information that he goes over really quickly so it's hard to follow along at times and easy to lose focus. Quizzes and exams are fair.
The transition to online class has been difficult for all of us but for some professors I think it's been harder. They just don't know how to teach online. I don't go to lecture but when I did you could only see his face from the forehead up on Zoom. He uses honor lock on two exams, one of them the hardest. His lectures didn't help me very much.
Professor Dixon is good dont get me wrong. However, if chemistry is not your strong suit this is not the professor for you. I try super hard and do everything that is required but since I struggle with chemistry is general its very difficult for me to do well with the grades being based off of tests and quizzes.
I've never seen or heard chemistry explained so plainly but even though Prof. Dixon has amazing lectures, you need to study and do tons of practice problems if youre not a chem scholar!
Great professor who has informative lectures and explains everything. Be sure to read the assigned chapters and practice questions and you will do well. Most heavily graded on 4 tests and a final so be sure to study for those.
Professor Dixon is an extremely good teacher. His lectures are easy to understand and follow and you can either study the textbook or learn from his lectures/powerpoints and still learn the material (use both to ace the class. Overall 10/10 but it is chemistry so you have to put in effort!
4 tests and a final. class averages for tests 3 & 4 were 69 and 67% (not passing). Gives you everything you need to then possibly infer the correct answers on the tests. Have a 99% A in the lab. 100% on DSMs. Did all of the end of chapter questions from the book. Could not pass his class. Have As in all of my other classes. I obviously put in work.
Honestly, Dixon compared to the rest of the chemistry professors for chem 2 was definitely one of the better options. He does make you work for the grade. The quizzes are moderate but a lot of the questions are like the test questions. DSMS are easy and bring your grade up. Just beware there is a cumulative final which is kinda hard.
READ THE TEXTBOOK. do not pay attention to his lectures. to be successful on his tests, read the book and solve the textbook problems throughout the chapter. Do all the DSMS, one quiz gets dropped. I could of done much better if i studied harder for one of the exams. Half the final was old test questions. Easily doable just study and work hard.
Take literally anyone else. He is extremely rude, does not care about you whatsoever, grading and method system is nonsensical and outlandish. Graded off very few things, PowerPoints make little to no sense. He outright threatened anyone who emailed him about anything with no exaggeration. No accountability and beyond unprofessional. Read the book.
Unpleasant guy all around. He wasn't a bad lecturer, but very unclear and generally rude in his emails. I would just take someone different if you want someone willing to explain topics in depth. Wont retouch on concepts and makes you memorize everything. Just read the book and disregard lectures and you'll scrape by.
Never attended any of the zoom meetings and his PowerPoints are a bit confusing. Best way to learn was through reading the textbook. There were 5 quizzes, 5 Exams and 5 HW assignments. Final was cumulative and actually wasn't too bad. Quizzes are very similar to the tests.
Professor Dixon was great! Go to his lectures to learn, hes great at explanations and answers everyones questions. There are 5 quizzes and 5 tests which arent very difficult, just take notes during lectures like any class and youll be fine! His accent is pretty cool and hes easy to understand. Hes nice and funny as well so dont worry!
Very kind professor but I was not a fan of his teaching style and I found myself having to teach myself all the material. I would recommend taking a different professor.
TBH never watched any of the lectures or attended help sessions and managed to get an A because of how simple his quizzes and tests were. For tests, he would reuse the quiz questions and add a few more. Honestly wouldn't take again because of how easy his class was, ended up not learning anything lol
Dr. Dixon thus far has been my favorite Chemistry professor at UCF. One thing I did not like about his class was the emphasis on tests which constitute all of your grade. He does drop one quiz, but you really need to do well on these quizzes and tests because there are few opportunities to improve your grade. Go to lectures and read ahead.
Prof Dixon was very open to answering questions. There is essentially no homework for this class except practice modules that take like max 45 minutes before each quiz. Practice quiz given helps with quiz and exam. Best chem professor choice if you are given one. I actually hate chemistry with a passion but if you study book you'll be fine.
Dixon is the best chemistry professor I have had- he gives no busy work with the majority of the grade book being test and quizzes. But, if you pay attention during the lectures, take notes on the textbook readings, and do the DSMs you will be fine. He rarely gives questions that you haven't seen before and a lot of them were easy chem 1 concepts.
Solid professor. I just watched the lectures, reviewed his examples, and managed to do pretty well. I liked how it was mostly conceptual and actually understanding the material instead of memorizing. Tests are heavy, but he goes over practice questions in lectures and reviews for tests and is always open for questions.
Really nice guy. Has a very thick accent, so following the lecture tends to be a struggle. The most useful thing about the class was that he published the slides for each lecture on WebCourses. Exams weren't particularly difficult, but you still need to study a fair bit. The homework is due at the end of the semester, but he never tells you that.
His lectures are unhelpful. You learn almost literally everything through Alecs. He also talks to all of the students who ask him simple questions like theyre idiots.
Good professor and helped me actually understand some parts of chemistry that I never did before. A lot of aleks work but it helps you understand certain things that are not discussed in detail. Is slow at teaching and wastes your time sometimes. I went to class most of the semester and definitely recommend.
The tests were pretty straightforward to the examples given in class and in the course files. Although going to lecture was optional, he gives a lot of hints on what will be on the test. The optional practice textbook problems are very helpful as well. Overall, a straightforward class with a few difficult concepts.
Cons: posts incomplete PowerPoints so its hard to take notes outside of lectures. HW is very tedious and not entirely helpful. No extra credit opportunities. Lectures can sometimes be confusing, had to watch a lot of videos to solidify my knowledge. Pros: Passionate about chem. Organized and consistent. Provides practice tests. Drops some quizzes.
I had Professor Dixon for Intro to Chem, and I already had a strong background in chem, so the class was pretty easy for me. Even if you don't have a strong background in chem, he explains everything and repeats things multiple times, so you'll do fine in his class. If you need extra help, there's also plenty of TA's who are more than willing to he
Professor Dixon seemed like a really great guy. He made lectures as fun as they could be for being so big. However, if you missed a lecture the powerpoints were glitchy and had missing information. Best advice do aleks earlier and read the book + watch the videos provided in the book to help study. All round not a bad choice and isnt too stressful
Really bad at teaching the topics and pretty disorganized. Quizzes were the hardest thing about the class because every test was a copy of the quiz and the final was an exact copy of the tests combined. No midterm. There is no curve/extra credit, and your quizzes+tests are basically your only grades so if you fail once youre screwed out of an A.
Not a good professor. Hard to understand him and the lectures are very boring. The class is not super hard, but if you mess up on one to two tests or quizzes, your grade is done. Make sure to study hard for each quiz, each test is very similar to the quizzes.
I enjoyed Professor Dixon's class. Be prepared to do your ALEKS ahead of time, or it will build up. That's all the homework you have. You don't want to miss lectures because although he does post the power points, he leaves stuff out of it online. You'll get everything you need in class. He has office hours if you need him. The class is short.
Honestly, Professor Dixon was not a favorite. The way he teaches is horrible: he reads from PowerPoint slides, like many professors do, but he doesn't do a good job at explaining the material. Whenever a question is asked, he doesn't answer, he just repeats what he said before. And if a student elaborates on the question, he gets an attitude.
Pretty straight forward class. Four 10 question quizzes, Four 20 question exams, Aleks and a forty question final. If you attend class and take notes, you should be fine. Make sure you do the aleks ahead of time because itll build up and get harder towards the end. Overall, an average class.
You will completely be teaching yourself. the tests and quizzes are impossible and test heavy, if you aren't well versed in how to teach yourself advanced chemistry concepts... GOOD LUCK!!!
Just a warning for anyone planning on taking his class, if you don't do well on the tests, you will fail the class. I promise. His tests are hard for no reason and doesn't curve. good luck to anyone taking his class
Professor Dixon was not the best for chemistry. His lectures are boring and his powerpoints are so confusing. I have mainly relied on the book and teaching myself for this entire semester. He does not curve any exam even if he sees his students failing. He will replace the lowest test grade if you do good on the final. He uses DSM's for homework.
I think Professor Dixon is a nice guy, but his teaching style does not work for me personally. I would say if you are primarily not an auditory learner, this professor is not right for you. He just reads off of PowerPoint slides, and he does not explain the material very well. He also doesn’t really answer any questions students have :(
Would never take this professor again and he seemed like he had the best reviews out of anyone in the chemistry department. If you take this class be ready to teach yourself because his lectures are boring and very confusing
Not a lot of work in class but pretty much your entire grade comes out of tests. Also, there are no study guides for said tests. He means well but I feel there is a lot more he could do for his students.
the most thing that I like in his class is that the homework was due at the end of the semester, his test not too easy and neither hard. but keep in ur mind that you will teach yourself the SI and TA arent helpful for me, so i used youtube vedios. i didn't stress out in his class so i would like to take with him again.
Will not help you at all. Expect to read because the lectures are all very confusing and he reads from the slides. The only way to know what you're doing in the class is to read the textbook. He also doesn't clearly state when the tests are and his materials are very difficult to find and not where they're supposed to be. Save yourself the money.
I've taken Dixon two semesters in a row and at first it was not bad, but once you get into the higher level chem lessons, his teaching style is not the best. He reads straight from the very disorganized powerpoint and your grade depends entirely on tests. You will have to teach yourself and put in a lot of work to pass.
You will more than likely teach yourself most of the material based on DSMs, PowerPoints and the textbook. Most of grades come from tests and quizzes. Replaces lowest test with final and drops a quiz. Test questions come directly from PowerPoint and Quiz. Final is almost entirely old test questions.
Dixon is amazing. I really went out of my way to go to almost all of his office hours and those helped DRAMATICALLY with my score and he gave me personal tips on how I would succeed in the course. Final is cumulative but it wasn't difficult because I went to office hours and went over the previous exams (final was basically past exams compiled)
If you take Dixon be ready to teach yourself. His lectures and PowerPoints do not help whatsoever I had to use the book almost the entirety of the semester to teach myself and prepare for his tests. He does not curve or give extra credit. His tests make up the majority of your grade. The only good thing was that his hw were all due at the end.
He is the best chemistry professor tbh, don't listen to the bad reviews his tests super super easy and the final from the last 4 tests easy an A, and his PowerPoint is so clear and useful. He is so kind and always ready to help his students, i will definitely with no doubt will take him in chem 2, i wish if he teaches organic
This is my second time taking this class, I thought Dixon would be easier but I'm on the verge of not passing again. Tests are 20 questions, sometimes with stuff we don't even go over in class. His lectures are very disorganized, the powerpoints in webcourses are never the same as what he shows in class, they are always missing information.
This professor is good but be prepared to have to teach yourself at some points. There are multiple quizzes and exams which make up the majority of your grade so there is a lot of studying for this class. The final was very easy though since it reused old test questions and it made up for the difficulty of the other exams. Overall solid professor.
Amazing Professor! If you want to pass class, just go to lecture and study his powerpoints! The final is an exact copy of the 3 tests combined. Study those and you will pass! Dixon is great at helping students and he responds very quickly to emails. He is caring and wants you to succeed. Take him if you have the chance!
Dr. Dixon was a pretty good professor with a very easy class. If you show up to lectures and pay attention tests should be simple and stress-free. He is very clear on what your grade will be based on and very fair. I had no issues with his class and would definitely recommend for an easy Chem. for Engineers credit.
He's awesome. Very clear lectures and engaging. He's cool and funny. He answers every question clearly and makes sure everyone understand before moving on. He goes over every quiz question and reuses them on the test and final.
Professor Dixon only really tests on the content from lectures done in class. When studying, memorize the trends. Questions on quizzes will show up again. Even though he does online lectures, if you show up you'll get so much more out of the class. He's a bit boring at times but he's very good. Study for quizzes and exams and you'll pass.
I took his summer course and when I tell you I had to drop the class and accepts my first W because this class was hard! It is mainly quizzes, tests and homework. The quizzes and tests are basically back to back. The homework is intense. Be prepared to give your all for this course. No extra credit and lectures are boring and not really helpful.
Best Chem Professor at UCF. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the exam. Everything he goes over in class will be what you should know for the exam. He does not throw any curve balls. Do the end of chapter questions and study the powerpoint and you should be good.
Best chem professor at UCF! took him for intro and chem 1 and got an A in both classes. exams are so fair and he sets you up for success! I love this man
Funny and all the quizzes/tests had material that was on powerpoints or ALEKS
PowerPoints are so difficult to understand. He improvises during lectures and repeats the same thing way too many times to think of what to say next. He gives you a due date that isnt the same as it is on ALEKS, so its confusing. His English is bad. His lectures are hard to follow. Not easy to communicate w outside of class. Im teaching myself.
lectures are just going over the PowerPoint which he also posts on web courses. quizzes are in person and fairly easy with a bit of studying and you go over them the same day. tests are slightly harder but have questions from the quizzes. Grades are just quizzes, tests, and Aleks. overall not a bad class just have to study a bit.
You will be encouraged to go to lectures if you want to pass but it is a good thing so you can actually learn, repeats at least a few questions on tests from past quizzes. Sets up the course to be as easy as possible for what chemistry is, and won't try to trick you in tests but rather see what you have actually learned which is fair.
One of the better chem professors at UCF. Clear grading criteria, decent lectures, but he only reads off PowerPoints. Tests aren't hard at all and reflect what is learned in the homework and practice questions. They aren't designed to trick you at all. Review quizzes every week which aren't that hard either. I would recommend him to everyone.
While his lectures are decent, he is really bad at responding to emails and he always ends up grading our quizzes/tests wrong every time. I kept getting negatives as grades and it'd take forever for him to fix them. The quizzes/tests are pretty easy but his organization skills on webcourse is terrible. Also has confusing due dates.
The lecture is based completely off of his lectures and class notes. Attendance was never mandatory and you get to miss one test that could be replaced by the final. He suggests students to use the online textbook for practice problems but it is not required. The ALEKS is another software that has to be bought for homework, kind of difficult.
Test and quiz heavy, only one other grade and barely helps grade. He gave a test the monday before thanksgiving and gave attitude when I tried asking if I could take it early. Super hard subject but overall based on what I have read ab other professors hes a better option. Not very personable but knows what his taking about
Mr.Dixon is a very intelligent and kind teacher who is very passionate about his class and tries his best to make his lectures enjoyable. He does have a slightly thick accent but it did not affect my ability to understand what he was saying.
Dixon is probably the best chemistry professor you'll find at UCF. He speaks slowly and repeats himself a lot which I found to be very helpful when it came to retaining information. Quizzes and tests are taken in person but are very easy if you study. The tests have questions directly from the quiz. I will be taking him again next semester.
Attendance was not mandatory or checked but he adds things to the PowerPoint during the lecture. It's mainly based on PowerPoints and you have to pay to access the homework. He has an accent which isn't an issue or too heavy to the point you can't understand him. Though I don't like how he taught and the tests are much harder than anything you see.
In this course you will go through four chapters. This course utilizes a platform called Aleks for homework, and can be time consuming. There are 4 quizzes, 4 tests, 1 cumulative final all taken in person, no notes allowed. This professor is organized, and knows how to teach. Go to lectures, print out powerpoints and follow along. Study!
despite dixon being one of the better chem professors, his lectures and powerpoints were too difficult to understand. i felt like I had to teach myself. in this class you have four quizzes, followed by tests, and a homework program you have to pay for called Aleks. studying for this class and understanding the content can get really tedious.
Dixon is an alright professor, but he will leave you in the dust. Powerpoint lectures are posted online but the catch is that there will be information that is left out that could be useful for later study. Had an exam the day after Thanksgiving Break, and the contents on that exam were extremely rushed. Practice tests help + Final replaces lowest
This class was a ton of fun! Dixon is a great teacher and is funny during the lectures. He records and posts most lectures, uploads the tests and answers after you've taken them and uploads the powerpoints. There is extra practice in the book but I haven't been using it at all this semester. Great Teacher!
The way he gives his lectures can either be boring or hilarious because he repeats himself 1000 times. Quizzes are harder than tests and he repeats a lot of questions from the quizzes on the tests. Homework is not that bad and can be done relatively at your own pace.
Dr. Dixon is great at lecturing and answering questions during lectures. His grading criteria is clear from the start, and doing the recommended textbook problems alongside with the online problems will ensure you achieve an A in this class. This practice alongside his practice tests are excellent review for tests as well as the final.
Very easy class. You are graded on very few assignments but they are not hard if you study. There are 4 quizzes, 4 tests, 1 final, and Aleks homework. He just reads off of a powerpoint in class, it has everything you need.
Intro to Chem with Dr. Dixon was not that difficult. His tests and quizzes came from the lectures. He provided practice tests that tested all of the necessary knowledge, and he posts the PowerPoints he uses in the lectures. The only other grade was the ALEKS homework, and as long as you keep up with the due dates every few weeks you will be fine.
Good professor, and is funny at times too. The class content itself isn't hard as long as you ATTEND EACH LECTURE. Make sure you stay up to date on ALEKS, as its a huge portion of your grade. Exams are fair, about half the exam questions come from the quiz, so make sure you understand what you got right and wrong on the quizzes and you'll be fine.
Professor Dixon's class is easy as long as you do the homework. Going to class felt like a waste of time and the only reason I knew how to do anything was by the homework. Near the end of the course I fell behind on homework and that made the tests a lot more difficult.
Not sure why his ratings are so high. His lectures were awful. He repeats himself 100 times. I taught myself most of the info, and that is why I was successful. I emailed him with a few questions and he was not very kind. Not a fan.
The tests and quizzes are pretty easy. However, the test is always the class after the quiz which doesn't make much sense. The final is much harder than all the other tests.
Take Dr. Lapeyrouse for chem 2045 as a suggestion. I learned more in her class in two weeks than I did in Dixon's for half the semester. He was rude several times. Lectures at times were boring, repeated himself a lot. Exams would be the class after the quiz. The final was harder than it needed to be. I pretty much taught myself most of the content
I am taking professor Donovan for CHM 2045C. Save yourselves and do not pick this professor if you want a good grade. His PowerPoints are super confusing and doesn't explain anything well. Even when a student has a question the student is left without a proper answer that would help. you basically have to be your own professor.
Very awesome professor. Attend lectures and he explains things very slowly and repeats things often and gives examples on what might be on quizzes and test. Quizzes, tests and final are all multiple choice. He often reuses question from hw and quizzes on test. He is very lecture heavy. Make sure to study the material he provides and you'll be good.
The textbook was free and optional, he was overall a good lecturer but personally I wouldn't take again just because his class is super test/quiz heavy so one bad grade will drop you easily. He does good explanations but sort of just repeats himself if you ask a question during lecture
Do yourself a favor and don't take chemistry at UCF. The graded homework in ALEKS doesn't reflect what is on the quizzes or tests. He doesn't answer questions during class, so don't even ask. Don't take him unless you're able to teach yourself. Almost no resources are given to study. He's the best chm professor at UCF but it isn't saying much.
Awful. Do not take his class if you want to pass chem. I went to every single class and none of the info was on the tests. Tests are only 20 questions and he does not cover the material on them. Warning you, I wished someone warned me
If you do not want to teach yourself chemistry dont take this class. Lectures are confusing and powerpoints make minimal sense. He tells you to look in ebook for examples after barely explaining examples in lectures. Test are mainly on equations rather than actual information, each test has a few questions that arent discussed in lectures or ebook.
Definitely don't blow off this class like I did, I realized by the end that I could have done much better if I had applied myself some towards the beginning, so take the class seriously and you can easily get an A but you can pass with a C easily.
Dr. Dixon is a great professor that everyone should try to take. He teaches concepts very well and is always willing to help outside of class. He responds to emails lightning fast as well. His tests and quizzes are very straight forward and as long as you do the practice problems quizzes, you will be fine.
Not sure where to start. The worst professor I've taken so far. He doesn't teach and he gives PowerPoint slides with missing information. During his lectures he just reads of the slides. You have to teach yourself and the exams are heavily weighted and really difficult. He is not a good professor, do not take him.
Please do not take!! Powerpoints do not make any sense and are out of order, he doesn't explain the concepts very well and is always yelling for some reason. His tests don't make any sense either, the questions are literally made out of thin air or something because it's not even related to the slides, assignments, or textbook.
If you are looking for a professor that reads off powerpoints and offers zero help this is the person. You will spend most of your time teaching yourself as the only thing he does is read off a powerpoint that anyone else can do. Half of the class is weighed by your test score. This class will be difficult if your foundation of chemistry is weak.
dixon is probably one of the best chem professors at ucf. he goes over the material and powerpoints well and repeats things that will be on the exam, so be aware of that. he also is not trying to trick you on exams either
not flexible, not kind, very rude.
Hands down one of the best chem professors at UCF. His exams questions are exactly like the ones he gives you in his PowerPoint. Read the textbook!!! It's tedious to read the textbook and take notes but it's the only way to pass any chem class here at UCF. Easy A if you put the work in.
I had to work so hard for this class. You basically have to self-teach yourself chem, PowerPoints when downloaded are difficult to understand and super confusing. You have to show up for class. TAKE NOTES!!!!! Focus on his powerpoints. I bombed 2 of his exams and still managed to pass the class. DO not give up! not an easy class.
He is a nice professor. Make sure to attend class as he repeats himself a lot and most of the time they tend to be test or quiz questions. He also refused questions multiple times so make sure you study with the materials he gives you. I am horrible at chemistry and have learned a lot In this course. Do not give up and study you will be fine.
He is not a compassionate professor. He made the class more difficult than it already is. Unless you are already good at chemistry, run!
Dixon definitely has the knowledge & passion for chemistry that's needed and I felt like his lectures were engaging, but he flew through them very quickly & the powerpoints are hard to understand once you're home and trying to review alone. There are weekly labs & assignments, but they barely help your grade when compared to the weight of exams.
Lectures are very poorly structured and go through a ton of material in a very short duration of time. Finishes chapters one day and expects students to take a test on it the very next day or within a day or two without spending sufficient time on the topics. Very unapproachable. Doesn't help students learn the subject or get better. Least caring.
He was a good prof, but not as compassionate as I expect from a prof. I had some personal stuff happen during the semester and had to make up some work, and he was very passive-aggressive about it and made it out to be an inconvenience to him. The best way to pass is to study the PowerPoint for exams and past exams for the final!!
Literally just don't procrascinate, and you'll be just fine. The material is nothing new from 9th grade Chemistry. Lectures are very good, and examples are good. Dynamic Study Modules are great for solidifying content, and the tests are not that heavy though they're graded in a strange way.
Probably the best professor your gonna get for chemistry which may not be easy for everyone. People assume they will get an A just by listening to lectures, but that's not how college works for the most part. College entails self-studying and this class is no exception. Nonetheless, definitely attend lectures as he goes over important notes.
Professor Dixon is an amazing chemistry professor. His exams are a little tough but are based directly off his lectures and PowerPoints so nothing you have not seen before. You NEED to study for his exams. He will go over the material needed for the test but you have to review everything and master it. A lot of homework to boost your grade, easy!
He goes through the powerpoints super fast and each slide has a lot of information so it's pretty difficult to follow along and retain everything. On the plus side, the exams are directly related to the content and doesn't require much mental gymnastics so as long as you review a lot you'll succeed. Do not pair this class with an intense course.
I passed with an A, but it was no thanks to the professor. The lectures consist of the professor yelling off of a powerpoint, which is disorganized and missing important context. SARC was a much better study resource than anything the professor gave. Three quarters of your grade is tests, and the final replaces your lowest test.
his PowerPoints were mainly blank, had to attend the lectures to get the full information. your grade is very test heavy, the labs were pretty easy. he replaces the lowest test grade with final but had to attend SARC all the time just to get a decent grade.
attending lectures is a must if you want to succeed but i found myself having to learn a lot on my own. He also gives a curve when grades are finalized but will never respond to your email about a grade bump.
Points-based grading criteria (can get confusing), PowerPoints on Canvas have less info than the lecture PowerPoints (difficult for those who like to take notes outside lectures), a nice man outside class but appears stern in class, decent teacher but almost every UCF chem class forces students to learn on their own, don't procrastinate on HW
Dr. Dixon's class is not hard if you show up to lectures, take notes, and dedicate time outside of class to study. His grading criteria is clear, and he provides practice tests for all of the exams. He gives you everything you need to succeed, so if you receive a poor grade it is because you did not try as hard as you should have.
Does not REALLY teach. He gives you resources for you to learn on your own time. Study hard for exams.
Classes don't help a lot. Study a lot before the tests, for the final exam study all the four exams posted because it is basically the same. If you are an organized student, I recommend this class.
Lectures are engaging. I think he is one of the best Chem professors at UCF. I took him for intro the chem and gen chem 1. You NEED to attend lectures. Take notes of the example problems he goes through lectures and do practice quizzes and you will do great.
Took CHM 1025 this Spring Semester. The class is very test- heavy, so you must take the effort to really study for the exams/quizzes. I did not mind taking him this semester, just know that you really need to put in the time to study or else you will fail. His class consists of Aleks, 5 quizzes (but lowest is dropped) , 4 tests, and the final exam
He isn't the worst professor ever but he isn't amazing either. His lectures are alright, he does make sure to go over problems very slowly to make sure people understand. The textbook is actually pretty useful as I self-taught myself a lot of things by using it. Just make sure to study and practice a lot out of class!
Professor Dixon is very helpful and gives students everything they need for success in the class.
I took him in the summer, intro to gen chem; he was very nice. Just make sure that u read and practice a lot of the problems and always ask for help; it can be a lot when it comes to math and balancing chemical equations but use outside resources if u want to. We took a chapter quiz for each chap and then a test for it. read and study a lot
hes acc the sweetest prof ever.took him this past summer semester for intro to chem. best way to prepare is do a couple questions everyday and practice.i honestly watched a couple YouTube vids and learned thru there.his lectures are long and boring ngl,hes a super sweet man but repeats himself A LOT. but he does it for the students understanding.
Professor Dixon is one of the worst chemistry professors. He is extremely condescending if you ask for any help. His lectures are boring as it seems as they have been copy and pasted for the past 20 years. He will try to intimidate students with the police and frequently comes onto this site to try to scrub his bad reviews off of it.
Attention is not mandatory BUT I highly recommended as his lecture contain some of the question that WILL show in the test. As long as you keep up with your reading do the practice exam, quiz and homework prior to exam day, you will be fine. He also go over the question you miss one on one if you stop by his office hour.
This class is VERY quiz and test heavy. The only grades are these online homework modules, quizzes, and tests. These tests and quizzes are not impossible though and there a lots of resources to help you study like the SI sessions. Just show up to lectures and try to study a bit and you should be fine
I like Professor Dixon. But, he is definitely a true lecturer. If you do not learn well from this, I wouldn't take his class. I found the SI sessions to be more beneficial than listening to him lecture in class. Find a study group, go to tutoring, put in the work outside class and you'll be fine.
Professor Dixon was a cool guy. He was very easy to talk to in office hours and he made the class passable. He made it so the lectures matched the tests and gave optional online practice tests before exams that matched the actual material very well. Only downside is the slides he uploads online sometimes has missing info than from the lectures.
Good Chemistry Professor! I remember a few times he was being mean to students for asking basic questions but other than that he's a really nice guy! The tests felt fair and I felt like I truly understood the material in his class! The only other critique is that the powerpoints he would show in class wouldn't always match the ones he uploaded
Professor Dixon clearly is passionate about teaching chemistry, his lectures are straightforward and easy to follow along with. He explains well, and embraces questions. Tests are pretty hard, a lot of the material is complicated and he doesn't touch on everything in class. Tough grader, grades are only based on tests and quizzes. Attend SI/SARC!!
I can't stress this enough of how much I dreaded going to this class. He was so rude & doesn't know how to teach or explain. Never puts when aleks is due.
I have mixed opinions on Dixon's teaching, but overall his class is easy. If you put in the time, you'll get what you deserve out of it. He may not be the most empathetic of professors, and he may not be the most interesting of them, but he's straightforward. His grading is is made very clear, as long as you know what's expected, you'll be fine.
This class is an easy A if you put a little work into it. All exams are multiple-choice and similar to the online practice tests. Attending lectures was kind of pointless - I found it easier and more helpful just to teach myself the material with the resources that he uploads online. Just beware of the homework and don't let it all pile up.
He's not a horrible professor, probably one of the better options for chm-1025 but you have to be prepared to study if you don't already have a chemistry background. I would say you don't have to attend class for the first half of the semester but attending later in the semester will prove beneficial. Do aleks, that'll help buffer bad quiz grades.
He is a very funny professor but not always the best at teaching. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. His power points presented in class are different then the ones posted online. If you are struggling like I was for a little bit then go to class and take better notes. The tests are simple compared to all the content. Final was even easier.
Overall Dr. Dixon is a good professor for 1440. All the tests are multiple-choice. His practice tests are very similar to the actual tests. He drops your five worst quizzes and replaces your worst test grade with your final grade if it's better. He can sometimes go a little fast and the class can seem boring or repetitive.
I had Mr. Dixon for CHM 1025, and he honestly was pretty good. He drops the lowest quiz grade and replaces the lowest test grade with your final grade. Tests are easy, almost all quiz questions appear on them, so it doesn't require much studying. ALEKs is the homework and can be difficult to keep up with since getting a question wrong set you back.
Be prepared to do a lot of practice. Great course, go to additional lectures and tutoring
Be prepared to do a lot of practice, outside sources are helpful and also tutoring
Lectures are long and honestly boring. He posts the slideshows on Canvas but they are difficult to follow. Make sure to stay on top of ALEKS because it could make or break your overall grade. Tests and quizzes are easy.
Be aware that it is very homework heavy with the program ALEKS to practice chemistry principles, as well as very test heavy. I will be retaking this class summer 2024. Even though I did all the homework and quizzes, I still failed. Be ready to study. Overall his lectures were great and the SI tutoring was helpful for those who attend the sessions.
If you want to pass the class go to the lecture. His powerpoint on canvas dont match the in life ones. you actually miss out on a few things that might be on the test. He drops the 4 lowest quiz grades. And if your final is high enough he will replace a test grade lower than your final with your final Lectures were a little boring but manageable
If you read and study the textbook and are good at math you'll do fine. Lectures are boring and mostly useless but he sometimes sprinkles in stuff that will be on exams that isnt found in the textbook. I rarely went to lecture and still did fine. Slides and lectures are only good for practicing problems similar to whats on exams.
Its amazing how much better of a professor he is when you don't have a little birdie whispering in your ear that he sucks. 10/10 so far in 2045C so far. 90% sure he dropped a JJK reference.
Dixon is amazing. Personality: kinda dry and weird sense of humor, which is not for everybody. Class: homework for each chapter, lowest quiz dropped (quiz: 20min10q), lowest test replaced by final if higher (test: 50min20q). You will never see anything in his tests or quizzes that you have not seen before. As long as you study, you will do great.
This is the second time I have taken Dixon, and I am never taking chem with anybody else. Best professor I have ever had. He is super organized; you will never see anything in his tests or quizzes that you haven't seen before, all multiple choice, and he just gives one homework per chapter. Absolutely love his class.
I loved Dr. D. Took him for intro and I thought he was super funny for a teacher at 9am. His powerpoints were super simple and I could understand him very easily. His tests are in person, but arent bad if you actually review the powerpoint. I would absolutely take him again for any other future chem class. Textbook not needed.
The worst professor I have ever had to deal with. His powerpoints are useless I only learned the material from YouTube and barely the textbook. His tests are extremely poorly worded and difficult to understand unless you actually enjoy Chemistry. This concept does not come easy to me and this professor had no effective outlet.
Do not take Professor Dixon if you can't teach yourself. He reads directly off of his slides and does not teach. I do not recommend. Save yourself from a bad grade.
While his lectures weren't super useful for me, he makes it clear what content will be on the tests, which made it simple for me to find outside resources to study for tests. He's very kind when you ask questions but doesn't tend to actually answer them. Overall, I found his class very easy but the actual course materials weren't much help to me.
Professor Dixon is a ok professor, he is a very nice person to talk to however he has an accent that makes it hard to understand him sometimes. He has a total of 4 tests which account for a major part of your grade. In lectures, all he does is read his PowerPoint which doesn't show how to work out problems or understand the subject.
Not bad professor, just requires alot of review. His lectures are just him reading ppt's, but i'd only show up for the example questions he had on his slides because they tend to show up on exams. If you want conceptual understanding, your textbook will be your best bet. Go to office hours because he'll go over exams 1 on 1. 4 exams, 1 final, 12 hw
This is my second time taking Dixon and overall I think he is a good professor! During lecture he mostly reads off the slides however I recommend going and watching him do the example questions since they will show up on the tests. Only downside is that your grade is based mostly on tests
Class average for final exam was a 60. NO CURVE. for his students. His PowerPoints are all over the place and crammed a quiz right before the final bc he was behind all term.
Worst professor. Very test heavy with the average of the final being 50% with NO curve. The man has no decency for his students. I tried so hard to study the materials he provided but no matter what I could never seem to understand what he was saying in lectures or during tests. UCF needs more chemistry professors.
Can explain concepts but the questions that we practiced with in lectures, homework, and practice tests are harder than what is on the exam. This class is very exam heavy so if you don't do good on them then it knocks your whole grade. Some of his powerpoints have small differences between the ones he posts and the ones from lectures.
Pretty good professor. He outlined how to get an A in the syllabus. Although he reads off slides, the content is not bad. Everything on the exam was on the PowerPoint. You just need to put the time in to practice. HW is due at the end of the semester. Each test has bonus questions for EC. Final replaces lowest grade. Just study and you'll do fine.
If you're gonna take CHM2046 at UCF, take it with Dr.Dixon. To some he may come across as tough, but he's fair and truly cares. If you want success in this course, read the textbook and take notes before lecture. I cannot stress this enough, use the Tro textbook and score high on your exams. Take notes before class and in-class. 1 quiz dropped.
He mostly just read off his powerpoints. 4 exams overall + final. You have to do very well on the first exam because the other 3 are definitely more difficult. Exams are usually 21 questions and he only grades out of 20 so you could get one wrong and still get 100%. read the chapters in the book they were way more helpful than lectures
Chemistry is a class that you have to put time and effort into. Most of the people giving 1 star reviews are just freshmen wanting an easy A. As long as you study the textbook and lectures you should do decent on the exams. The final takes a lot of questions from the exams and he also replaces your lowest test grade with the final.
Professor Dixon loves engagement and is always willing to answer questions. His slides are outdated and can be difficult to interpret which is why asking questions is a MUST. The exams and quizzes are straightforward and a good grade is obtainable through practice. Use practice problems and homework for exam prep.
By no means is the content in chemistry II conventionally easy, however Dixon will give you the resources to succeed. This is a very exam heavy course. That being said, everything on the exams and quizzes are in the PowerPoints. Take full advantage of the DSM assignments for each unit as they are great practice for the tests.
such a tough class, I would study his powerpoints and do review problems and would still never pass. office hours were not helpful and neither was SI
This class requires consistent effort and dedication. While the lectures alone may not be enough, using the textbook, attending office hours, and tools like unstuckstudy ai can really help. Exams are challenging but fair - stay on top of the material and you'll do well.
Chem is a hard class for me, but the problems in class are the exact problems that will be on the test. Learn how to do the practice problems in the lecture, maybe the ones in the weekly reviews, too, and you can get an A. Multiple choice tests and the final replace your lowest test grade.
I enjoyed Dr. Dixon. He is a funny prof. but can sometimes be hard to understand. His notes are different in class, DO not skip. Go to his office hours and connect with him, he's helpful and is fun to talk to. Not a very work-heavy class, I study an hour a week and 4 if it's an exam week. The final exam grade can replace the lowest exam score.
Dixon is rough. His slides are truly awful, so you're going to have to read through the textbook if you want to understand the material. I don't know if it was just my class as well, but he would get really pissed at us when people didn't instantly supply answers to his questions. Despite that, his exams are fairly easy if you put in the work.
Get a group to study with before the third week. Do your OWLV2 homework in tandem to the tests instead of waiting for the due date that is months later. 1440 is going to be hard no matter who yoi take it with but Dixon is a solic choice.
I thought Professor Dixon was a good teacher. Although his course was not easy—you need to study—his coursework and tests were doable. He is a chill guy, and you are not required to go to lectures, but I would recommend going if you are not Chem savy.
Dixon is a good teacher however as someone who didn't have many chemistry classes in high school I really struggled. While attendance isn't mandatory, he'll give information for the upcoming assignments. Quizzes and tests are taken in class not online. For me, his lectures went fast and were hard to follow. However, there are resources available.
Professor Dixon is objectively a decent professor. If you show up to lectures, pay attention, and do the homework, you will pass. I struggled in this class because I am CpE and terribly disinterested in chemistry. If you're good at algebra, though, and can memorize a couple of formulas, you will do fine.
Very test heavy. Doesn't really help you and isn't understanding when emergencies happen.
test HEAVY you have to pass all the tests to pass the class, overall not that difficult but the course is poorly taught in lectures. Extra studying should help you pass but if you fail one or two tests it can be hard to make up for it.
This professor gets more hate than is necessary. As long as you show up to the lectures and put time and effort into understanding the material you will be fine. Tests and Quizzes are in person. Tests are taken the day after quizzes and are very similar to the quiz. Only other grade is online HW on Aleks which can be tricky at times.
Apparently the best chem prof, didn't love him though & was hard for me until I started to do LOTS of practice and understand what I am doing. He doesn't want you to remember steps, but instead understand why you are doing those steps with a deep understanding. I'm taking him again because he's the best rated chem prof. out of the other options.
Solid professor. Speaks clearly and gives clear instructions for what is on the exams. About 3 hours of homework per test/section. Provided practice exams for each exam. 4 exams and a comprehensive final. Final replaced lowest test grade. Easy B ever and if you put some effort in the A is very possible.
Professor Dixon is a decent professor and a great guy. The expectations and grading criteria were clear. I went to his office hours, and he was very helpful. I will be taking him again for CHM 2045.
Everything comes from the lectures but he's incredibly repetitive, tedious, and hard to follow. He posts the slides but they're less than halfway complete (think fill-in-the-blank with zero context). The only assignments are ALEKS, quizzes, and tests. Didn't need the textbook. Extremely fast-paced. I passed but definitely won't take again.
W professor if you go to class you will pass
Dixon was a fine professor, he doesn't really lecture as it is mostly reading from a slide show and annotating it. The class is quite content heavy and requires studying if you seek to get a good grade. I would highly recommend attending class and online zoom labs to get a better understanding of the topics.
Be careful when taking this course. Donovan is not a rude professor but his class is designed for you to be the one to teach yourself. The homework is all due at the end of the semester and there are only 5 tests including the final. This class's grade will depend heavily on passing the test, so study. all lectures are posted online.
I never went to lectures and passed every test. Just make sure to study the PowerPoints he posts. He also gives bonus pints on his tests.
Reading the textbook, completing hw, and watching YouTube videos was super helpful tho.Make sure you have a strong study group! The class is graded out of 900 points: 200 for homework,400 for tests, 100 for discussion quizzes, and 200 for the final. The final replaces your lowest test grade.Attendance for the lectures and discussions is not mandatory.
Best prof. for 1440. Has EC on all tests & final. Lots of office hours. Lectures are a little dull but get points across, be prepared to write fast with notes as there is a lot of content in the course. Has a nice sense of humor and can keep a lot of the class engaged. Reciprocates the respect you give to him, so be nice and he'll be great to you.
Super mediocre prof, but super clear syllabus and all that type of stuff, just super average with mid lectures. Only did terrible (C+) bc I did not give a single ounce of effort in
Stopped attending lectures after seeing how the homework pretty much taught everything. You can get away with not going if you practice the homework for the units he tests on each test and review the lecture slides. Got at least an A in every test and a 100% on the final by just doing the homework, not even reading the slides.
Dr. Dixon was a pretty good professor, would take him again. His lectures are ok and can be helpful, most of the information you can use is from the homework actually. Definitely passable if you got a good group to study with.
He gave us asynchronous quizzes every week and a test about every four weeks. As long as you attend lectures and do homework on time, they're pretty straightforward. To be honest, the only hard part of his class was focusing on lectures and actively engaging, since he tends to not be the most exciting lecturer (and tbh nobody participated in class)
Lectures are very boring. He uploads all the slides onto Canvas, but removes important details. The final grade is very much dependent on 5 exams and weekly quizzes.
Pretty easy class, just go to class and pay attention because his note slides are terrible outside of class due to animations. He'll also tell you what to know specifically and his final is an amalgamation of previous tests.
Overall, Dixon is a pretty decent professor. His class is very doable, as we did only PowerPoints, quizzes, and exams. He was very thorough and fast-paced in his lectures. You do need to dedicate some time to his class as it is pretty memory-heavy and completing ALEKS outside of his class. He also has many SI/SARC leaders who are there to help you.
Used ALEKS for homework, due dates followed lecture topics. In person exams, all multiple choice. Lecture powerpoints are posted but the quality isn't the best, so writing notes during lectures is more helpful. Lectures aren't very engaging but he goes over every topic in the chapter and will happily answer questions. Very straightfoward.
Decent professor. His lectures are rushed. Gives practice tests and homework, study it well and youll do good on the exams.
Honestly, for a professor he's quite good. He makes it very known what is expected of you to do, puts the lecture notes on canvas, reminds you of what chapter you should be done with already. If you study, consistently do your OWLv2 homework, and show up to the lectures you'll be peachy keen. I'm just bad at chem LOL but it's a good class
Attend his lectures- the slides he posts in canvas are incomplete and are filled out in lecture as he goes over them. The final is an amalgam of previous tests, which he posts the answers to before finals week. He can be a little sassy if you ask stupid questions in class but if you go to his office hours he is very nice and understanding.
If you ever wanted a useless professor take him. Honestly he just reads off the slides and expects you to just know it. He's always like you should've know this in chapter (number) and then proceeds without explaining anything. This course should be online with the amount of nothing he provides. Go to the SI as it's 100x better.
registered for his class bc of limited options of chem professors in ucf. honestly he just reads off of slides n expects u to know everything. no proper explanation n he thinks u will remember everything. he's a nice guy he always says it's easy but it's rly not.if this is ur last option just attend all of the SI sessions bc only those helped
honestly wish i had chosen a different professor. all he does is read off slides and go super fast. he expects you to just know the information without properly taking a good amount of time to explain it. sarc does a better job of teaching the material than the professor himself.
Fine professor, best option for the class. I found him very easy if you go to lecture and put minimal effort in. Lots of office hours and people typically don't go. If you have any background in chemistry, he'll be easy.
DO NOT TAKE HIM.
this professor just reads off the slides, and he doesn't explain how to do questions. exams are hard and honestly the resources don't help that much. Find another professor to take chem 1 with.
if you want to hate chemistry and fail take him
Oh brother where do I even start. All bro does is just read off the slides at lightning speed. One time a student asked a question, and he said to "read the textbook." Like come on. I've never been good at chemistry, but I've really been trying. Ik there is slim to no better alternatives, but oh my GOSH.
don't take him.
All this dude does is read of slides and expects comprehension. Every time I'm in his class I wonder why I even showed up in the first place. His tests are NOT what he teaches. Like sir??? How do you expect us to do this. Maybe hes just not my cup of tea but I wish I took this class with someone else.
had him for chm1025 and he was alright, I got an A. This semester though has been horrible, it has gotten to the point that any resources he gives are not what is on the exams. The class average for EVERY exam has been a 50 and he refuses to curve at all. Even while changing up my study methods or studying earlier, I still fail. do not take him.
Be ready to teach yourself Chemistry if you have no prior experience. Dixon is a nice guy, sometimes funny. But, he just reads off PowerPoint slides every class and expects the class to retain the information. The tests are worth a huge chunk of your grade, and his "practice" exams barely help after the 2nd exam, so you must teach yourself.
This professor genuinely is the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. His slides used during lecture are nothing like the slides uploaded in canvas. His tests are nothing like his practice quizzes, assignments, ANYTHING. I studied in the library for hours just to have the exam be nothing like my study material. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
i hate this class so much and as a commuter this class was so draining. his resources n lectures r nothing like his exams n barely anything u can do to bring ur grade up. no written questions on his exams. nice guy ig but his teaching style is so trash. jake si tutor helped. i cry everyday bc of this class n i use to like chem. sucks just take w cc
He speeds over slides and posts different slides. There are 4 exams+ a final which count as the majority of your grade in the class, no curve avg is 50%. I ended up having to teach myself most of the concepts. He has office hours for quiz review that you got wrong but all he says is "read the textbook" or "you must have not come to lecture".
most useless lectures I've ever been to. u have to teach urself everything and the slides posted are always missing info. there are 5 exams with topics we went over for 90 seconds and they are your only grades with 0 feedback. the only good thing about this class is the s.i.. take this class at a cc if u don't want to hate ur life
just does practice problems for half the class and they don't look like the tests. Persistent on no curve even though test average is around 65. tas are good but still very hard
He adds information and new practice problems to his lecture slides that are not in the Canvas files, so the way to succeed is to review before class. The tests are difficult but fair, they look like a mix of the textbook and PowerPoint examples. I recommend attending office hours to review every test because the course will build on itself.
The tests are hard. Not a very good teacher, so I had to teach myself. No extra credit, four exams, and a final. The lowest grade is replaced with the final grade. He told the class that the final was 1:00-3:50 on Canvas and in the syllabus, but it was actually only 55 minutes for 40 questions. Leaves students unprepared for exams. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
He's fair, like really fair. If it weren't for SI Sessions, I'd be cooked for this class. Read the textbook before going to class if you don't want to go to SI Sessions, but you should, cause they go over past exams so you can see how he asks questions. Final is with ACS, recommend using the ACS Study Guide for Chemistry in the library to study.
Lectures are long boring and he repeats things constantly to the point you have no choice but to zone out. There are practice tests though so you can study a ton without needing to go to every lecture. Scantron is used so no partial credit. Test time is short, but if you know the stuff it is enough. Constants are given
Exam heavy, be prepared for that!! Read the power points before the lectures, study hard, do the quizzes, attend SARCS and you will probably be fine! Goodluck if you take this course.
Took Dixon for CHM 1025 & 2045—both were awful. Exams were way too hard, never curved, and the final was a cumulative state exam we weren't prepped for. Slides lacked depth, and his lectures were repetitive with no clear explanations. SI leader Jake was the only reason anyone passed. Avoid if possible!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. If you want to pass this class, you need to teach yourself as well as go to SI sessions. The DSM homework assignments to not correlate well with the material. His powerpoints are out of order and he often leaves out slides completely.
This is a class where if you want a good grade you need to actually put in some work and study. Dr. Dixon is very test heavy but he swaps your lowest exam with the final, and the final is easier than some of the harder exams because it is cumulative. A lot of these 1/5s are from people who took this class expecting to get an A or B with little work
Dr. Dixon continuously reiterates points on his slides and proceeds to say you have mastered the content and then completely moves on. You will have to teach yourself the majority of the content, and the lecture tests (4 in class tests) were made unnecessarily difficult. Digital assignments weren't like the exam and I would recommend attending SARC
Go to the lectures even if they are super boring and you will probably pass, tests are hard for no reason and his online lectures if you miss a class are terrible. Monotone boring voice with a slight accent, 4 tests and 1 final, lowest test grade gets replaced by final so that's good and the online hw is easy to do but it doesn't help at all.
Not the worst teacher you could have but not the best. 11 easy homeworks. 4 hard exams. You need to go to SI everyday. GO TO SI EVERYDAY!!!!! It is the only thing that helped me pass the class. You can get through it but you need to refresh/study everyday.
professor doesn't really teach. just reads off the slides and assumes we know how to do everything without explaining . only passed the class with an 85% because the SI leader was GOD SENT but he graduated :( hws are super helpful, and your best bet for passing is reading the textbook ( i know...) and lecture slides.
Decent professor but I'd rather be waterboarded than take this class ever again.
He knows his material, but it is clear that he does not know how to teach it. His powerpoints leave out so much crucial information that I had to pretty much teach the entire course to myself through other means. Overloads you with homework, and the tests are very difficult.
Personally, I found myself lost in most lectures. The teacher is nice, but I feel like going to the SI meetings helped/taught me the most.
i wouldn't wear a seatbelt on my way to class in hopes that i wouldn't make it alive.
I found the lectures pretty useless. He briefly goes over each topic and spends most of the time doing examples, some which aren't in the slides posted. I ditched the lectures after the first test and read the textbook, doing the example questions and practices he posted instead. I don't think you have many other good options for this class though.
Professor Dixon is a nice person! I took him for intro and Chem 1. 75% of your grade will be based off of tests, which sucks because the exams are unnecessarily difficult. The final exam saved me 🙏🏽 My advice would be go to SI. The instructor for tutoring was super beneficial! Read the textbook!
If you take Dixon, you're basically just going to teach yourself. The only reason I did alright in the class is because of the SI leader. He doesn't explain material and expects students to just know everything ahead of time. Also not great at answering questions. He will NOT curve any grades (besides the final) so keep that in mind.
He was truly mid. I know that I could 've tried harder, but his lectures/powerpoints are pretty bad and I did not feel like he adequately prepared us for the ACS final exam at the end of the course because we had double the time for the midterm tests compared to the final. Definitely go to supplemental instruction because that saved me from failing
This guy is terrible. I would say to not take him, but he's the "best" we got apparently. He reads of PowerPoints and some of the material on the quizzes/exams are poorly taught by the homework or you have to look it up yourself. He makes the material seem so easy when it's a bit harder than he makes it out to be. Try to find someone else. (Fall)
He makes it very difficult on what to study exactly. Gives us a topic list, My tip is DO YOUR OWLv2! I got dropped 5 points for missing 1 out of many hw's. Study practice exams, I never needed to open the book. He repetitive and boring but only puts half the slide show online so show up to lecture. TA's were a godsend. Find The orgo chem Tutor onYT
not a bad prof but he just reads off the slides. i didn't go to class at all and i still passed. your grade is very dependent on tests but you're given a lot of resources to help u.
This class is extremely dependent on tests. They're also filled with trick questions that confuse and mislead you so be careful of those. However the final is just a compilation of old exams and practice tests.
For a Chem 1 professor, you do not want Dixon. His PowerPoints and lectures are useless. I am a student who always attends her lectures, but attending his was pointless as it just makes you more confused. You will have to read the book and teach yourself everything, as he is not helpful, and when you go to ask questions, he is condescending.
Dixon's lectures are sometimes boring and he spends a lot of time repeating himself. Your grade is made up almost entirely of 5 tests throughout the semester. The class starts off easy, but if you are not careful test 2 can completely ruin your chances of an A, as the difficulty ramps up quickly. Textbook is expensive and cannot be pirated ($100).
His lecture is him reading PowerPoints (That aren't online) word for word. 4 MCQ tests & a final. His lectures were useless, however course content is inherently so easy I got 90's from a 3hr grind session right before each test without any prior attention to the topics. Take him, or anyone, the class is too easy for the professor to matter.
SEE THE BAD REVIEWS ITS THERE FOR A REASON im usual honor roll student n have bright futures but this class ruined it for me. asked if anything to raise my grade n he said it was illegal. no curves even when class avg is 40%. final is asc only that is curved only 5pts. tests insanely hard. would study my ahh off but still have to retake this class
he is actually the worst prof i have ever had. i have to retake this class even tho i worked my butt off he REFUSES to round grades. tests r unbelievably hard. went to almost every SI session study like a maniac still failed every exam. NO EXTRA CREDIT. DONT TAKE HIM EVEN IF THERES NOTHING LEFT. ended the class w a 67 got retake i hate this class!
he needs to be fired. most stuck up prof makes u feel dumb. i have to retake this class. no extra credit. if u do bad on exams in this class there is no recovery. lectures not similar to what is on exams. i asked for a curve i was so close to passing but refused. explained my situation to him but he didnt care at all. ucf NEEDS better chem profs
Almost got a heart attack in this class. Please take this class with someone else. Chem 1 should not have to be this bad.
honestly save yourself. do not take him. you have to literally teach yourself everything and he makes everything so much more complicated than it actually is. the coursework load itself is fine but only take if you are fr willing to sit down and teach yourself everything from scratch.
Only class in my entire school career that I've had to retake... just go to Valencia as a transient for any chem class, trust....
I've taken chem in high school and intro to chem and got an A in both. This was one of the hardest classes I have taken and while the labs and homework are easy the test are not related to the material taught. The class average for the 3/4 of the tests was an F and no curve on anything. Do not take this professor for the love of GOD!
class is graded by 5 tests including the final tests have 21 questions but graded out of 20 so you can get one wrong and still get a 100% no extra credit chapter dsms bascially it.
Hard. TA's are godsends. Can be kind of mean but funny too.
Just don't do it....Don't listen to the ones telling you to take him.
Withdrew because my test average was so low. Doesn't explain anything and just reads directly off a slide/ repeats himself 40 times. Condescending: "you must not be paying attention/ attending class" SI leader Jake was the only reason I didn't completely bomb the exams. Do not take. UCF CHEM DEPT NEEDS NEW PROFS. Chem 1 should NOT be this hard!
Just self study like a lot and go to the SI sessions and you should be ok, grading is 99.99% tests so you need good grades on each and every test if you want to get an A. He does drop one test at the end tho.
- Too many tests, not enough substance - ALEKS is pushed as the courseware - Supplemental Instruction does most of his job - Repeats things thrice, should say it once and ask if there are questions - Textbook used only for practice questions Passing is not impossible, but it's not worth the money spent; you should take it at Seminole State.
Despite the fact that he goes over the slides frequently in class, it just feels too repetitive. His tests and quizzes are way too rushed, and he uses tricky wording that confuses you when you're on a time crunch. SARC tutoring saved me tho. Not a good prof to take for this class if your chem knowledge is very weak (like mine).
The chem professors at UCF are slim pickings, but I think Dixon is the lesser of multiple evils. I took him for intro to chem+chem 1 and passed with A's, however I spent a good chunk of time teaching myself the concepts. If he was an option for chem 2 I would've taken him again (probs out of familiarity but still I don't think he's terrible).
This professor made Chemistry so difficult I am currently taking Organic Chemistry 1 and found his course to be the most challenging. Tests are made to trick you and he is difficult to understand with his thick accent. You will need to put in A LOT of work please take anyone else.
Dr. Dixon doesn't do much outside of reading his lecture slides, leaving you confused. The only thing I can recommend is that you do the OWLv2 homework and practice tests, they really help with the quizzes and tests. Also, YouTube (especially Organic Chemistry Tutor) is your best friend for understanding concepts and how to solve problems.
donny d is the absolute goat.
Great professor—his passion for Chemistry shows through his lectures. Lectures use PowerPoints with added examples, answers, and work not found in the posted slides, making it hard to catch up if you skip. Chapter HWs are all due at the end of the semester. Exams are fair and fairly graded. Just don't skip class if you don't want to self teach
his lectures are useless you are better off self teaching
He's ok but you will self teach yourself everything.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken, he does no curves on the tests and puts stuff on there that wasn't on the practice or on the notes. If you have a chance to not take him, don't.
awful teacher. just reads slides.
His lectures could be hard to follow at times, but overall, helpful. Homework is all due at the end of the year, so if you're good with managing your time, this could be great, but if you're not, this could not be so good for you.
Dixon actually made me hate chemistry. Went to his lectures and understood nothing; I did HIS practice test to prepares for the exams, failed every single one even if I'd get good grades on the practice, nothing alike. Went to office hours and he is so incredibly condescending. Other than that homework is easy and so are the quizzes.
Uses the same slides and practice questions from before COVID; meanwhile, the department/TAs are writing completely different tests. Horrible lectures, not even worth attending. Ask Chat GPT to make example tests from the online quizzes/Practice tests to study. Avoid him if possible.
If you have some background in chemistry, this class is conceptually easy. Professor Dixon's lecture's are boring since he reads off slides, but he goes over the problems really well. He will take time to help you with any clarifications on any topic during office hours. STUDY FOR ALL THE TESTS (they aren't easy).
It is a hard course. He does explain everything and there's a discussion section (2 zoom meeting per week) where the GTA explains the things of the week. He is OK asnd he does upload the slides he uses for classes.
Dixon has to be one of the worst professors at UCF. Dixon somehow made be despise chemistry as a subject. His lectures are borderline useless, he's rude and condescending, lazy and an unapproachable person. His practice tests do not match the actual tests, and his tests have averages in the low 60's and below. Do not take CHS1440 with Dixon.
Dixon is primarily teaching a concept and he preaches that but he lacks the ability to actually put all of those concepts to use when solving problems. Going back I would avoid having him he doesn't really teach in any manner. He also gets multiple units behind and then we jump over content for the exams and are just behind in general.
I don't think I learned a single thing from this person's lectures. Very forgettable lectures, and skips around a lot.
Don't trust his material because he search for stuff he never teach in class and will confuse you in all the test and quizzes.
He use other resources to find questions for his tests and quizzes. His power point material is different from the class he teach and the material he upload in the canvas...
just reads off slides, and the class is very large, so he barely answers questions. the slides in class don't even match the online ones. The practice tests are nothing like the actual tests, and there's no curve either. extremely boring professor. try to take a better professor for chs 1440.
Save yourself.
Do not take this class at all.
Not a very difficult class, and Dixon did a decent job at explaining the topics. It's important to go to lectures and take notes, and you'll be fine. Four tests and one final, with the final replacing one test grade at the end of the semester. Dixon is funny when he isn't trying to be funny.
His lectures were beyond bland. The book was online and confusing. The homework software was dysfunctional 90% of the time. He wasn't massively helpful in office hours, would not take this again, and tests are far too much of the course, and the content that isn't in the reviews appears on them consistently.
He just does not teach well at all, likes to over complicate subject matter and gloss over what's important like the math problems which are the majority of the test even though he barely teaches it. Also the test tend to be only half of what's suppose to be on it making it feel pointless after taking it because half of the material isn't on test.
Doesn't follow his own makeup policy. Test are 66% of your grade for a beginner chem class. Find an alternative, do not take this class.
I took this class a couple semesters ago and only now realized how great Dixon is. He's very organized, enthusiastic about class, clear and understandable (which is rare at UCF). Class was never rushed and bc of that we really got into all topics. Guidelines were straight forward. Yes there's hw, but all stem classes are hw heavy. Overall great!
tells you what to study with an announcement on canvas before each test. study what he tells you to. 4 tests and one final, final replaces lowest grade. attendance isnt mandatory but helps(many of the test questions are carbon copies of the lecture practice questions)Final was a carbon copy of the previous tests which are posted online.
lectures are useless imo, but his tests are pretty clear and you can do well if you study hard (except test 3). the final is cake as long as you go over the past test questions, which he posts at the end of the semester. plus, your final replaces your lowest test grade. p.s: chad's prep is a REALLY good channel for understanding the concepts
Class is pretty straightforward and run-of-the-mill. Lectures consist of him reading off a PowerPoint that is also posted online, so attendance isn't super mandatory. Provides lots of good study material.
He's not the worst; he mostly reads off the slides. You get four tests and the final. Attendance isn't mandatory but encouraged. Quizzes were every Tuesday for me online, which was 10 questions you also had Online HW as well. Overall, if you're new to Chem, it might be a challenge, but if you study the slides and practice exams, you should be fine.
This was a difficult class for me towards the end of the semester. The first two tests were really straight forward and the homework was easy to understand and for the most part was helpful. Although lectures were not mandatory to attend, attending is the only way to get the note since he does not post the annotated lecture slides.
Not worth going to lectures. He reads PowerPoint slide after slide. Exams are significantly more difficult than the reviews online. Only upside is that your final grade also replaces your lowest exam grade (if it's higher). 4 Midterms + Final. Makes chem unnecessarily hard.
Lectures are semi useful as he uses those problems from the lecture for the test. Go to office hours. He's very nice and accessible outside of the class. When it comes to the tests just re-do problems from the powerpoints/lectures and use the practice exam.
I would say that he is a good teacher overall but he isn't super friendly when it comes to asking questions, especially, if he's already gone over the topic. If you attend his office hours however, he is way more friendly, he helps you understand the topic better. Lecture is important but his pacing is really slow.
worst proffessor ive ever had. he is incredibly rude and condescending to everyone his homework in webasign is also terrible as it is really messed up and you can have the right anwser but it still wont work. do yourself a favor and dont take this class or take with someone else.
I never before had to study so much for a class, but it wasn't at fault of the teacher. I am just awful at chemistry. I got very behind but started to go to class and actually participate and got an A. Dixon can be moody. A lot people are failing since they weren't going to class/utilizing resources. TA Hernandez is great.
Lectures are boring because he reads off the slides and then posts the slides on canvas with missing information. The class had two zooms and one online quiz per week. The majority of your grade is 4 tests which are heavily dependent on practice questions from the lectures where he doesn't explain it well. One final which is the 4 tests again.
The course itself is fairly difficult, as there is a large variety of topics covered at a quick pace. Lectures involve the professor reading from a presentation and doing practice problems. The tests are not hard if you study well and take the online practice tests. The final is the easiest as it is mostly recycled questions from previous tests.
The class is easy if you go. Dixon reviews PowerPoints and works through problems identical to the tough test questions. He can be sassy when repeating himself, but he tells you what to study. The first two tests are easy, the last two require more work, and the final repeats questions.
Although attendance is not required, I heavily recommend go to the lectures as a lot of information gets covered. I found the tests difficult due to that he kind of just read off the slides and it sometimes felt he was annoyed about people asking questions which led to unanswered questions. Not the best, but not the worst either.
Very easy if you have an understanding of basic chemistry. If you struggle with chemistry generally, go to the lectures and take notes. STUDY TO UNDERSTAND, NOT MEMORIZE. People who memorize and did not understand the concepts did not do too well. I think he is funny, too. Online homework have to buy, but cheaper if you opt in to early access.
Dixon isn't a great professor, but not terrible either. He mainly goes through his powerpoints and reads off of them, but you need to go home and review them because there's no way you can fully understand it just by sitting in class. Go home and watch youtube videos on the subject as well. You WILL need to study (kinda a lot) NOT a free class.
Not the worst but not all that good. He's kinda funny, but can be rude at times. He explains the material sorta well, but goes too fast for you to take good notes. Attendance was optional and homework wasn't due until end of semester. Biggest issue was how hard it was to study; the practice tests barely covered what was on the actual test.
i didnt go to lecture because all he did was read off the slides. the homework is easy, the quizzes are easy, just study for the exams like a week in advance by using the practice tests and lecture slide problems. try understanding the concepts not just memorizing them and you'll pass the exams. 4 exams plus a final, multiple choice.
Dixon isn't a great teacher. He goes way too fast for you to understand anything or take notes in class, so there's really not much of a point in attending lectures since attendance isn't mandatory. You will have to teach everything to yourself by going through the slides at your own pace.
Rude. The only good thing I can say is that the final exam was extremely easy, it was old test questions just recycled. He tried to give a study guide out before each midterm but most of the time the questions are not related to the test questions. He goes on random tangents most of the time during lectures.
The class material wasn't that bad to understand; it is basic general chemistry, but Dixon reads the slides during the lecture. He does post the notes on Canvas, and also the TA posts more information. The tests are all mcq, but don't expect the practice test that he provides to help you. The class is definitely easy to get a A in if you lock in
Lectures consisted of reading PowerPoints, practice tests were unrelated to exam material, and lectures were extremely fast and hard to keep up with. The most helpful thing for me when taking this class was the discussion sections with the TA; I learned more there than in class. Overall, much more difficult than an intro to chem class should be.
Basically self taught myself this whole class because I had no time to write his notes and listen to him in class. He uses PowerPoints so you just copy them in your notes and I suggest looking at the practice problems from the notes. Test weren't too bad but def were hard.
Dr. Dixon's class starts off manageable but the next second and third exams definitely ramp up in difficulty. You'll need to put in extra work and really stay on top of the material. I highly recommend using the Cram website (Cram better)to keep up. Overall, fair professor, but don't let the easy first exam fool you. CramBetter is the resource.
Dr. Dixon wasn't the best at teaching, covered content quickly then just expected you to understand right away, a lot of self study to pass the class. Just talks from PowerPoints, he prefers his morning classes and is less irritated in the morning.
