Donovan's tests were, bar none, the most difficult I have ever had the displeasure of taking. He expects perfect memorization of virtually every word in the textbook, and worst, you will not learn anything since he teaches abstract concepts as concrete. If you are not capable of extreme memorization, avoid this man like the plague. Utterly nuts.
bar none the hardest teacher i have had in four years of business school. exams are on everything ever said in class plus the entire text and his notes. none of these three ever line up and will make simple questions from in class discussions worth lots. does not make time for students out of class

Maybe he isn't that great for ADMN courses but for Psych he is awesome. Tells you exactly what to study. Give interesting examples and makes a boring class fun. I had this guys for once a week for three hours and the time went fast. He really wants his student to do good. If your gonna put in a fairly good effort you will get a good mark.
multiple choice questions were fine but the written response is what kelled me everytime...if it werent for multiple choice i wouldnt do well in the class...he wants you to know every detail of the whole text so if you are willing to put in a lot of study time you will do well ....but dont take it as a easy course you have to work quite a bit
a good guy to talk, but when it comes to teaching he is extremely hard. i agree with the other comment of that he uses his lecture plus blackboard notes plus text book, which can lead to info overload!
he was a horrible teacher. i asked a question in class and he made me feel like an idiot. he picks students he likes in the class and focuses on them. he has no structure to his lectures and is a hard marker...infact i think that someone else helps him mark his exams and therefore every student is not marked the same!!..get another prof is u can!!
I took this course because everyone said that Donovan is one of the best profs at MRC. I totally agree-he teaches everywhere and I can see why. I agree, the course is hard. For the students who are whining about the course. Just because the course is hard doesn't mean the prof is a bad prof. Try going to class once in awhile..and try STUDYING!!
AWESOME INSTRUCTOR!!! I love the stories he tells in class.
He really cares about his students. The only prof I know who puts summaries, ppt slides, and movies on Blackboard-and also gives tutorials for midterms. And he is easy on the eyes.
We just finished the final. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Thanks for the final exam review Donovan. The best prof-and the sharpest dresser...HOT, HOT, HOT,...Am I right ladies!!!! Hey, Donovan, think of us when you are in Mexico over Christmas.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible!!! Worse teacher I have EVER had. Iam I straight A student and his tests we ridicously hard and he was a jerk. Gave me a zero on an assignment because I wrote my name on the wrong page!! Avoid him like the plague!!!
AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! Absolutely terrible teacher. Handed out review sheets for the midterm which had nothing to do with the actual test. I am normally an A student, he turned me off psychology for life.
Very good teacher. Very helpful, but does go through a lot of material in class. He does put the effort into create summaries and powerpoints for you. Fair marker. If you show up for class, even better.
Donovan was the worse teachers i have had at mount royal so far. was very hard to contact, tests were ridiculous, and favored the good looking women in the class. a lot of students drop his class because of how hard he marks. i wonder how he is still there.
Strange professor...on one hand, best prof I had this term and because of it I have decided to major in psych. On the other, he sure knew how to make me feel like a leper...for some reason, very weird around me. Review sheets on the money and good, bu failed to mention key subject in final exam review and got my only non-A because of it. Avoid.
Excellent professor. That said, Donovan was one of the hardest markers I have ever had. I found that I lost marks for small things. This is NOT the professor for you if you have any plan to put in anything other than a 100% effort. If you make an error he will call you out on it, but he will also guide you into avoiding that error in the future.
very comprehensive class
Donovan is clearly well versed in Management and is probably over qualified to teach intro to management. That said, if you apply yourself the whole way through and show interest, you will be fine. He does not like the typical 18 year olds who coast through class, so be aware of that! I got a 97 in his class so it can be done!
One of the best Pro I've had! He sure knows how to teach in a way that helps students to understand and remember the course materials~ He's funny and creative, gives a lot of great examples! I would love to take PSYC with him again~ His hard midterms help students to prepare well for the Final, and he curves ur average in the end. which is awsome!
Horrible prof... Very hard marker and very hard to understand what he says in class... Would not recommend him at alll...
Worst teacher I have had the displeasure of having. Comes across as very arrogant, complains how he is sooo busy all the time - no one forced him to teach at like 7 schools, and marks WAY to hard considering how he teaches. I would never ever take his class again.
DO NOT sign up for any classes with him
Horrible prof. Teaches at several schools in the city and has no time for students outside of class. He makes you feel stupid and expects you to teach yourself the course and he will go over a few points during class. Extremely heavy course load. Rude and arrogant. Has assistants that mark his students work. AVOID.
Donovan is an insanely difficult teacher to work with. He teaches at several other schools, not having time for individual students. He constantly changes the material in the textbook, disagreeing with maybe 70% of its content. If I could get a better teacher, I would.....
The professor expected way too much out of students- if you don't do everything on blackboard and I mean everything you're in trouble!
I took MGMT 3276 and MGMT 2130 with Donovan, he is awesome and hot. It might seem like he is picking on you for answering incorrectly, but he is trying to make you understand the material. Attend class, read the slides posted on BB, reading the chapters is helpful, participate in the class discussion questions, and give examples in exam questions
Horrible Instructor...avoid at all costs! Does not seem to care if anyone passes or fails but is more interested in his own research. He is not approachable and is arrogant. When approaching him with a question he makes you feel stupid. Has no intention of dedicating time outside of class to help and says he will respond to email quickly but doesn't
The worst Professor i've had till date.Wonder when Mount Royals gonna kick him out,Doesnt know to teach at all and expects his students to magically know everyhting. Please get out of his class while you can...by far the worst marker and teacher ever...
Donovan was the worst professor i have ever dealt with. He constantly rolled his eyes and made me feel really dumb when I asked questions. His notes were brutal and I would not reccomend his class. Though he did have a great knowledge of the information being presented, he made it difficult to want to be in class.
Donovan is a professor sent straight from hell!!!In all my other classes Im taking Im getting A's and B's in his class i barely have a D and his final exam was exclusively from his notes that make no sense at all.
Extreamly hard prof. Exams are from his own notes and lectures. Tends to favor some students over others. Lectures move fast from topic to topic, and notes are necessary to pass. If you want to keep your GPA up do not take his class.
He has a great knowledge of the subject, yet he makes it very hard to learn. For the last 6 (out of 13) weeks of classes we literally sat through class-long presentations which were a complete utter waste of time, while Donovan surfed the net and read his email instead of truly grading the presentations. Don't take this professor. Ever!
I am a straight A student and not afraid of hard work. I have never before felt that an instructor was against me. But truly felt that Donovan was. He is bright & knows his stuff but mostly just likes to hear himself talk. Very arrogant. Avoid his class. He does not care about you.
Lets just say he makes you work really hard to get your grade. You need to work the textbook throughly and understand it in order to get through the class. He marks according to your application but he does not teach well. He tries his best, I'll give him that, but he needs to make the class more interesting.
Avoid this professor at all costs he will kick you in the balls.
The class itself is not bad. Donovan is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is unfair and ambiguous. I am a student who goes to every class and I dreaded every moment. He pitted the class against each other. I was physically ill to go to some of the clases because he harvests a poisonous environment. He does not fit what MRU is about.
This teacher is not there for the students, he is there for the pay cheque. Everything you read negative about this teacher is true, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He makes you work your ass off just to receive a terrible mark, he does not give out A's and has to curve all of his exams because of his ridiculously high expectations of students.
Way to intense for an organizational business class. Thumbs down!
Overall, the worst prof ever. He's got a pompous attitude and makes you work way too hard for an easy subject.
Donovon shows no courtesy students, He will easily give a Zero on anything, Expects you to know material inside out. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KILL YOUR GPA AVOID HIM!!!!!
Horrible! So much material, And he never gives any indication of what he is going to test on. Don't ask him for help, he will talk down to you like your stupid. Very hard tests. He has to grade on a curve because everyone does badly. Very high on himself. Doesn't care about you. If you find out you have him TRY TO GET ANOTHER PROF NOW!
He was MRU quality, enough said
He isn't the kind of prof who's going to go out of his way to make you feel special, he's there to teach. The comments on here are ridiculously over exaggerated though. The course has a lot of material and if you don't put in the effort you wont do well but he's a fair marker and a decent guy. I did just fine in the course.
I've never had a grade as low as this class (my GPA is over 3.6). He has a distinct teaching style for MRU in that it's learn or die. Just be prepared for it and never underestimate him. He is helpful though (quick response to e-mails, constructive feedback, good 1 on 1) and efficient and clear with his lectures. Just pay attention
Donovan does not provide clarity in his teaching. Interactive learning methods are not applied to his classes, no use of powerpoint. The majority of his classes are spent watching him sit in a desk at the font of the class.
Everyone who knew him warned me about him so I tried to change my classes around but I couldn't get it to work. Honestly he is not bad at all. Make sure you attend every class and listen to what he has to say. He is pretty tough on APA though so make sure you chose your group wisely.
I didn't find this prof to be useful at all. He knows the material, but does not have a clue as to how to deliver any content. He would sit in a corner in a desk at the front of the room, look down at a piece of paper, and ramble without making it engaging at all. It seemed very lazy to me, and I'm disappointed that I wasted my money on this class.
Very boring. Talked about the same thing over and over again. Very hard marker when it comes to exams.
The material was fascinating. Looked forward to this class until this Prof. robbed many of an enjoyable experience. Not worth expressing concerns.Lack of compassion to any family emergency.Prior to class you read his bibliography;seems to be a level of arrogance and annoyance versus excitement to be in his class. Very rude-Cheers Mr Lawrence.
dont bother
If you like a prof that's arrogant, self absorbed and makes no attempt at teaching, go for Donovan! Totally ambiguous as to students responsibility and how he grades. The first case you get any feedback on is the midterm. Going to class wasn't helpful and wastes classes with team based activities. Definitely one of the worst profs at Mount Royal.
Donovan really makes this class harder than it should be. Exam questions ramble on and are often based on class discussion. Eg Based on our discussion of __, use the __ model to describe the problem of motivation in the case. He's very unclear on what he expects and doesn't grade you on any cases before the case based midterm. Not a helpful prof!
Donovan takes the class extremely seriously, yet he teaches next to no material. He wastes class time with team based activities that are completely irrelevant. He is also an extremely slow marker, he's often rude and there is no clear expectation of what's expected. I highly recommend avoiding Donovan Lawrence.
Donovan is very well educated in the field, but he expects everyone else to be too. Tough on marking. Use your text book to study for midterms M/C not his notes because his are more targeted for the written part he actually makes. Great in responding to emails but is very condescending. He DOES give good examples and explanations in lectures tho!
He takes his class very seriously and is very challenging however if you attend all classes and study the things he emphasizes in class you will be fine. He scaled the mid term by a large amount as well. Not as bad as everyone says
Donovan is the worst teacher that I have ever had to date. He does not teach any of the material of the course he just expects that you know it. He would not help with any questions about our midterm case analysis yet failed 1/3 of our class. The only thing that he does in class is make you do case analysis' on your own. AVOID!!!!
He lacks clarity and expects students to assume his expectations. Class average on midterm was 47%. He grades on a curve because everyone does bad on his exams. Avoid him because he is out there not to teach you but to make a living by finding your faults. He gets tricky on your success.
The people saying he is a hard marker just don't understand the material. He is a fair marker but isn't out to give people marks for free. If you have a valid point and are able to support it with facts, then you should be fine.
Donovan spends the majority of class time reading his chapter summary notes to the class or gives us the period to work on textbook questions to avoid actually teaching. He marks extremely hard! And he is also very rude and disrespectful. Avoid this prof at all costs!
Terrible professor. He is incredibly knowledgeable in OB, but he sure as hell does not know how to teach it. He is arrogant, condescending, and unapproachable. He rambles on about irrelevant material. His exams contain pages of useless fluff that you have to sift through. He looks for specific verbiage and if you don't use it, you get a zero.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS MAN! Donovan is rude, arrogant, unhelpful, and condescending. He is by far the worst prof I've ever had. Thank goodness I only had him for the spring; I don't know how people stand him for the regular semesters. If you're looking for a sign not to take a class of his, consider this it: DON'T DO IT!
worst experience judgmental condescending not knowledgeable
Donovan is the single worst teacher I have had at Mount Royal. His lectures consist of him sitting in a chair at the front of class reading from a summary of his notes. He gives very few examples and rarely expands on anything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH DONOVAN AT ANY COST. Seriously, I would push back my graduation date to avoid him.
Although the lectures are long, I found Donovan to be a helpful teacher. He is knowledgeable and covered the content needed to succeed. If you make an effort to pay attention and keep up with the lectures you will have no problem . Donovan is available for extra help if you so choose to utilize his time.
Doesn't explain any of the course material in class. Spends most of the lecture time recounting stories from his personal life or talking about anything else not related to the course material. Comes across as very condescending especially when doing the presentations for the group project and asks questions that are far above the course content.
Take with someone else. He is rude to students who participate in class discussion, unclear on what will be tested and then marks like he wants you to fail. I never understood what people were complaining about when they say they had a bad prof before I experienced the hell that is Donovan.
RUN!
Donovan seems like a pretty good person; he likes jokes and talks about his personal life. But when it comes to learning, it's not clear at all. His expectations are very confusing and often contradictory. He often says to "hard wire" something to your brain for the midterm or final, none of this will be on the exam(s). Be prepared to work hard!
Worst Prof I have honestly ever encountered at MRU. Doesn't care about his students or the subject matter and doesn't prepare the class for the midterm or the final. Better have the text book and PAY ATTENTION to the random handouts he puts on blackboard and never talks about again... Those will be the midterm and final questions.. STAY AWAY!
Not a very fun class, in fact it's hard to stay awake most of the time. Prof doesn't do a lot of teaching, mostly just group work which is fairly pointless. Donovan is a nice guy but over all not a very helpful professor. The only thing that is going to help me pass this class is the textbook, which I will have to use to teach myself the course!
He is condescending and heartless. Will not negotiate marks.
Donovan is on a power trip. Handed an assignment in 30 minutes early bc of unforeseeable circumstance. Emailed it to him 30 minutes early for proof of completion. Got it DateTime StampedSignature from the office secretary. THEN GOT 20% OF LATE MARK. C Outline says I could get a ZERO! I'm taking this to a higher power! the guy is an ass! RUN AWAY
Donovan is certainly the worst prof at MRU. He shows no apprehension towards students if they are facing a hard time and will not negotiate marks with students. My advice: stay far away from his class!
Donovan is by far the worst prof I've ever had. Honestly do NOT take his class. He's very degrading and even laughs at you if you answer a question wrong. He's just plainly the biggest ass ever and thinks that he's gods gift to the world. The last day of classss with him made me so happy.
By far the worst prof I've ever had at MRU. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. SERIOUSLY!
I was never a big fan of psyc to begin with, and if you aren't sure if you are or not, I recommend finding another prof. His tests are quite hard as well, so beware of that. He does post notes, which can be helpful. I would recommend just sticking to the textbook though. That will be your best friend when it comes to his midtermsfinal.
It's all about the work you put in. The only part of this course that sucks is Don's pop quizzes, I would've had at least an A- otherwise. That being said with the 24% i got overall on quizzes I managed to pull through on his case studies and exams. Don't be intimidated by the blacked out range rover, if you take this class seriously you'll prosper
Beware!
Definetely would NOT recommend this prof. His tests are hard and he is very stubborn. Covers very little in class, prepare to self-teach youself this course and have a midterm every two weeks. He refuses to admit he is wrong (even when proven wrong with hard facts) and his over-all "teaching attitude" is less than stellar. Pick a different prof!!
Assumed psyc would be an easy option.. turned out being harder than my core classes. Tests are very tough.. 8/30 people getting below a 45% on the last 2 midterms. Has good examples in class, is a nice guy but be ready to teach yourself the course. To Donny boy.. Its an intro to psychology course, come on, lighten up on the tests. beware!
Bad Prof! Would not recommend taking his class! Had such a tough time paying attention in class because he is very mono tone and dry. He doesn't care about how you do at all and expects you to learn everything on your own. Hard marker and doesn't teach anything.
Assignments and tests are heavily weighted in his class, so make sure to do well on each one. He is a picky marker, make sure you follow APA format to the T. He gives a midterm and final study guide which is VERY helpful. If you follow what it says plus read the textbook you will do just fine.
I personally really liked him, he was clear on what was going to be on the tests. He always gave hints like "make sure to know this for the midterm" I don't know what everyone else is talking about but he is fair. The only reason I didn't get an A is bc I didnt study hard for the finaln ended up getting a low grade on it but the prof is super fair
I really don't get why he has a low rating.. I mean yes he is DRY.. But if you show up, do work, Which was NOT a lot. You wil end with atleast an 80. I unfortunately got a 74% because i didnt try on my mla task. That was worth 25% imagine if i did try.... He is not a bad prof. I didn't like him. But i sucked it up, and qualified for my program.
Very Good Professor, I ended up with A- , Didn't studied much during midterm as i had another exam previous day. Suggestion study from Day 1. However class Average in final was pretty low , highest was 85.14
He is a tough marker but he is clear on what is expected.
I didn't like his teaching methods. He is very bland and not easy to listen to.
2013 Grad here, alot of students are dismissing the fact that Dr. Lawrence gives a tough life lesson: dont expect to get anything without working towards something. The class is meant to be hard but if you persevere, pay attention, and work hard it'll pay off with a meaningsul grade. "You are exactly where you're supposed to be"
awful prof.
Read the textbook and attend lecture to pass his tests... obviously. He is super clear about what you need to know and often will tell you the exact question he is going to ask you on the test or will say "I'll ask something similar to this". As long as you pay attention you will pass. Helps to go to his tutorials.
Clear lectures, gives examples, follows the material, test and grading very clear and honest.
Was scared when I read all these reviews, but he was super informative and I learned a lot in his classes. He sounds intense but he pretty much told us what to study for the exams, so if you follow exactly what he says you'll do fine. And review the worksheets he goes over in class
Psych is deep and requires you to actually do your school work/attend classes but for me an average student I passed his class with an A. He is willing to negotiate grades if you put in the work, he will reply to emails and answer all questions. He is straight up ith what to expect in exams. You just have to work for it like you'd expect in Uni.
Ive had a lot of bad professors but he has got to be one of the worse. I found that the course content was actually interesting to learn if youre able to teach it to yourself. He is not accommodating, which makes it difficult for student to succeed.
Horrible. I hope I will never cross paths with this prof ever again.
One of the toughest profs I've had for a INTRO class. D O N O T R E C O M E N D ! ! !
Avoid if you can. Ridiculously high expectations for an intro class
Tested wayyyy too hard for an intro course. I found him to be super unaccomadating to students, and several times during the semester he made a few students visibly very uncomfortable when they tried to answer questions he asked to the class. They never spoke up again in the class after that. He did make good chapter summaries though.
For an intro psyc class, as a sociology student I thought this would be rather interesting for me to expand on my studies. Donovan made it rather difficult to have passion in psyc because of how hard of a grader and his habit of shooting down kids who try to answer questions, discouraging you from ever speaking up again. He is intelligent otherwise
Attending class not helpful, he does not properly answer questions. Instead he has a lengthy answer that goes around what you ask. Tests are hard, he marks unfair. He clearly picks on students he doesn't like, watched him publicly shame a group presentation instead of asking them questions, very uncomfortable. He is completely unprofessional. AVOID
One of the most useless profs I've encountered, maybe just for certain classes though.
I didn't find going to class worthwhile, he sat in the corner and read directly from his powerpoint, something I could have done at home. He was an extremely tough and picky marker for pop quizzes, group projects and the final exam. Please take everyone's reviews about him seriously and avoid him if at all possible, for your GPA and your sanity.
Just run for your life! Psyc 1105 is hard and requires a thorough understanding of concepts. Donovan makes it even HARDER. When I opened my first midterm, I didn't know either I should laugh or cry as there was nothing I spent hours learning. I dropped off and took this class in the spring with another prof, which was a rewarding experience after
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. I read in another review that he called out a group in front of the whole class; he did that in my class as well. Not professional. The whole semester all he would do was read the power points while sitting at his desk. And every class he would talk about his personal life. Seems like he could care less if his students pass.
He is very difficult to learn from. I didn't like his teaching style. Everything I learned from that class was from what I taught myself from the textbook. He is not a very engaging prof. I would not take another class with him.
His daily anecdotes make the class very engaging and interesting. Not sure why he has a bad rating on here, he's really nice and willing to help his students. The only bad thing is that the tests actually require studying and memorization
He offers sincere real-world application of his lecture topics. You're getting a guy who's a successful businessman and has a huge academic CV. Everything I learned had immediate benefit to my professional life. It's rare you get access to this caliber of people for the cost of the course. Take advantage of it! The bad rap on here is bologna.
Avoid if at all possible, if you cant teach yourself from the textbook since his lectures are useless, unless you really want to hear the two same stories about his time working for the military or his love for the Forzani group. He doesnt use the slides just sits and talks at you, questions are not encouraged or answered clearly
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. He reads off the power point, questions are not answered clearly, dry lecturer. Tested extremely hard for an intro class.
For an intro class it was very overwhelming, the amount of content to cover was a lot. He rewards A students. If you show up and listen to what's important, and ask questions to clarify everything, you can easily get high grades if you're a good student and study/self teach, otherwise you will fail for sure. Taught myself from the textbook though.
he is not a good prof, you would need to study by yourself, he did not really talk much about the thing your are learning inside the text book, he also has a really bad time management.
The tests are way to heavy and worth to much. Dont go to his class because it will overwhelm you and he speaks in a way in which its not engaging enough. Its very hard to retain information and he just reads from the text book for the most part.
He is awful. First off, he is unorganized and his lectures are useless. Taught the course to myself by reading the textbook. For an easy resume assignment he thought that 3 drafts was good, but it was a waste of time. One of the classes he lecture for three hours about the assignments that we would do during the year.
Very very hard prof to listen to. Half of his lectures revolve around what he did in his youth, and he didn't have a very interesting youth. Lectures are SUPER dry, but he is an easy grader. Totally useless when it comes to peer evaluations. He claims he will change grades if at least half the group gives in sheets, we had 4 of 6 and he did nothing
This prof does literally nothing. He seems nice, but you wont learn anything from him. He doesn't teach much, lots of rambling and stories of himself. Very unclear and vague instructions for everything you have to do. Just overall terrible.
After taking a class with Mr Lawrence, i see why people have issues with his teaching style. Personally, i didn't like the way he taught the course as he does not give much feedback on certain things such as review for the midterm, questions about the final project and more. Overall, he is a fair marker and recognises the students who do the work.
Lectures were dry and often digressed into his personal life. Tried to make learning fun with class activities. Recognizes individuals who put in the effort. Group project grading packet was lengthy and disorganized but you'll do well if you follow his suggestions and the guideline exactly as written. Great for self learners who prefer no classes.
He goes over the same things throughout multiple classes. Covers very little in class and expects you to self-teach pretty much everything else. Not really helpful with feedback. Not approachable. Unless you want to put in extra work learning everything on your own time then stay away from his classes.
Donovan was a great professor. His assignments were very clear and I thought he was an easy marker. He communicated everything very well on blackboard. He seemed very friendly to me, so I'm not sure why there're so many negative reviews. This class is difficult and has a lot of material. Don't take it if you're not prepared to work.
He is a fair marker but does take a bit of time to get grades back. His assignments are clear and easy to get a good mark on. He was very considerate and understanding how stressful online classes are and didn't assign extra work or readings besides what you needed to do for the assignments, midterms, and quizzes if you want.
Comes off as a prof that is super strict, expects very highly of his "senior" students and is unapproachable. His grading of students reflects otherwise. As long as you try and listen to his "tips" you should do fine. He provides students with lecture notes but you will have to self-study. Prior to exams, he provides a study/review guide.
Quizzes are difficult and the level of APA perfection he wants on papers is ridiculous. If your APA formatting isn't perfect, don't take this class, he will tear your assignment apart so quickly and doc marks. I will give him this, he is experienced in his field and passionate about what he is teaching, he's a very smart businessman for sure.
I really do not like Donovan as a professor. Every time a student asks for help or clarification he responds and makes you feel like youre stupid. He has such a tone of voice when you ask questions and I really dont appreciate being treated like Im dumb or like Im asking a stupid question.
Donovan is a decently nice guy but unfortunately not a great prof. Participation in class is graded which is fine but the lectures are very dry and hard to participate in. He is unclear on what is expected in projects and on tests. He is also very picky about APA formatting. If you ask for help prepare to not get much help or feedback as well.
Donovan was extremely tough to please. His verbal feedback is harsh and exaggerated. He is a stickler on APA formatting, I've never had issues with other professors on it, but he gave me many very low marks because of the citations. If you ask him for help he makes you feel dumb.
Honestly, he is not that bad of a prof. His lectures are quite boring and he pretty much reads off his notes. Other than that, he gives good feedback and is a very nice guy; his exams are a bit challenging if you're bad with short/long answers.
Donovan is a nice guy but his lectures are extremely boring and dry. He mainly just reads off his chapter notes for an entire 3 hours lecture, with a 15-minute break in between. The course is test heavy (2 midterms, 4 quizzes, and a final ). Be prepared to read every chapter in the textbook if you want to do well!!
Extremely unfair, absolute stickler for APA citations considering Organizational Behavior is a joke of a course that no one likes and does nothing for you in the future. Not accommodating at all, and has gone out of his way to make this course overly challenging.
I am not too sure why Donovan gets such bad reviews. He is a hard marker but gives great feedback. Like anything, if you pay attention in class and do the readings in the textbook you will do well.
I really enjoyed having Donovan as a prof! He explained everything really well and set clear expectations for what he wanted on assignments and tests. The course itself is very heavy, so just be prepared to read the textbook on your own and spend a lot of time studying and preparing for classes/tests.
The lectures were very dry and not stimulating. Although his BB site was very organized, his lectures were not. I didn't even know how to take notes based on his lectures. It was all over the place. Lectures were recorded. Also, he was very strict about the assignments. You have to follow the rubric exactly. The quizzes and tests were not so bad.
He is not at all understanding and he's very condescending, he makes you feel dumb for asking questions in class which makes you never want to speak up in class again. His lectures aren't clear and very hard to take notes from. Do not take his class, he's awful.
He is a good professor
Donovan was a great prof. Make sure to read the textbook and take good notes as he used several things directly from the book on his tests. The assignments were fun and he marked fairly easy. This course itself is a lot of work (primarily due to taking textbook notes and memorizing) Would definitely take a class with him again.
I liked Donovan, he was caring but very headstrong toward his class. Expect a lot of papers, but he explains in great detail how to do it in his classes - so I recommend going on those days. Quizzes and Midterms are hard as there are a lot of questions, but very little time - but most answers come from the textbook or can be found online.
Donovan makes it very easy to get good marks. Assignments are straightfoward, as are tests. His lectures can sometimes be boring and often aren't useful, but I would still recommend attending because he tells you in class what notes in particular to study for tests and exams. He's bad at answering questions in person, so email them instead!
Donovan is a nice guy, he tries to make the class interesting (to no avail), the class itself is dry and content heavy. Tests are hard and big (60-90 questions) and based on lectures, textbooks and PowerPoints. He marks fairly easy on assignments, there's just a lot of them. A lot of work for an intro class and could be executed better all around
Donovan is a pretty nice guy but his lectures are very long and monotonous. I liked the class though because as long as you follow the rubric on the assignments he grades very easily.
Is unclear with expectations of assignments and does not give any time within the class to work on group projects, rather, re reads the textbook
Donovan is a good guy and a good prof over all. There are journal entries and even though in the past I had hated these, they actually cover topics that while not immediately relative to the class - they make you think. His lectures can be a bit boring, he reuses the same jokes, but he's a genuine and honest dude. No presentation & 1 group project
Dr. Donovan Lawrence gets straight to the point in all lectures. He provides class notes that guide all students toward sufficiently completing assignments. The overall atmosphere in his lessons are intellectually stimulating and offers sufficient information to guide you toward a successful grade.
Donovan is a genuine guy that cares about psychology. I wish he was more accessible when it comes to assignments, quizzes and midterms. Does not provide sufficient feedback and his expectations can be confusing. This course was overwhelming and unfortunately, Donovan was not able to make it easier on his students.
Will deduct 20% off of your grade if you hand in assignments 5 minutes to 24 hours late and has zero leniency. I got in an accident and had to hand it in 9 minutes late, he didn't care. Will talk for the entire 3-hour lecture straight with zero breaks. You must do his assignments exactly how he says he says they need to be.
Unsure why the man receives so many bad ratings, my guess is lack of willingness to put any real effort into the course. Yes the content is heavy, yes you need to do the work but if you bother to show up to class regularly and listen, you will be golden. Dude made me fall in love with psych and I am a nursing student, you get what you give.
3 hour lectures were very hard to get through, especially since it was just slides being read at the front of the class. There are chapter quizzes that are 10 questions in 15 minutes. There is a chance for 5% extra credit though which is helpful!
Pros: you get a 2 page cheat sheet for the midterms and final, the 15 min break you get when you have a 3 hour class with him Cons: lectures make you fall asleep, tough grader, talks about himself all the time, involves a lot of group work with his in class assignments, NEVER stops talking, tough grader, assignment outlines are 15 pages long
Long sleepy lectures, always talks about himself, and a tough grader. Do not take this course with Lawrence if you want a high gpa.
One of the worst profs ive ever had. Lectures were not beneficial at all, and would be extremely useless/boring. Read directly off the slide. would not take him again.
Donovan is a great professor. He is always there to help and support his students. His lectures were really easy and helpful. He gives us 4-5 lectures in the whole semester to work on any of our assignments which was really beneficial. I had a great time with him and I would highly recommend to take him for HRES2170.
He was a terrible teacher for HRES 2170 since he had to cancel lectures 3 times during the semester without any advance notice before going to class. His lectures are very boring and hard to keep myself awake. The notes provided were sufficient to pass. The exams are challenging if you do not study and read the additional material.
Lectures were remarkably boring, he has a tendency to talk in circles without really getting anywhere. Not the friendliest to approach, I mainly read the textbook and stayed away from class. Midterms were pretty fair and just based off of the textbook.
I was in the 3 hour lecture once a week and I think I went maybe 40% of the time. He talks SO MUCH.
Talks in circles, mostly about himself. IMO, the examples he uses in lecture have a weak connection to the concept being taught. Attending lectures is a waste of time, just read the textbook instead. Lazy prof and gets students to "teach" each other by reading off textbook in class for 3hrs. Unapproachable, condescending and rude.
Never take this professor ever all he do in class is talk about random stuff and the tests are so hard, he doesn't even teach the material that's on the tests/exam.
Professor seems to like his work and is knowledgeable, however, he is a poor instructor. The fundamentals of teaching are lost on him. There is very little enthusiasm and material in class is not on the exams. His marking on papers is inaccurate and has me questioning if he even read the papers as his rubrics seemed to not relate. Overall, avoid.
The lectures can be dry, but if you stay engaged and use helpful study tools like Unstuck ai along with the textbook, you'll do well. The exams are challenging, but fair grading on assignments makes up for it. Overall, a rewarding course if you put in the work.
Each of the assignments are extremely clear, and so long as the instructions are followed then an A+ is easy to achieve. Large portion of the grade is determined by tests, but the posted notes cover everything. Midterms are curved to give 100% to the highest score in the class and boost all other scores accordingly. Lectures are very interesting.
Doesn't give clear instruction. Doesn't teach any useful content that can be applied to tests or assignments. Claims he tests what he teaches but this clearly isn't the case since his tests actually have content in them. 0/10 do not take his classes.
he just does not care
Donovan's lectures do not cover the chapters, meaning you have to learn the material on your own prior to the class. He makes you feel dumb when your confused and ask questions. Definitely does NOT test what he teaches. Gives unclear instructions with major assignments. Please avoid at all costs. emphasis on the makes you feel dumb!!
He gives many opportunities for students to get their grades up in the class. He tells you exactly what he expects on a test for you to get an A or even an A+. If you do bad in this class it is not a reflection of his teaching.
Taking Donovan for Organizational Behaviour is probably the worst choice if you are taking this class. Teach yourself the course from textbook material and he will rant in class about random stories that don't pertain to the course material. Many students talked about going to the dean on behalf of his teaching. Will doc marks for everything!!!
Donovan's lectures consisted of a summary sheet and briefly goes over the readings. If you don't do the readings you will be so lost in his class. He does provide clear criteria of what's going to be on exams and he does require you to do 4 journal entries which weren't bad at all. Overall he's a pretty good prof but you do have to put in the work.
I could not believe the method in which Donovan taught his lectures. He managed to speak about so many things that had absolutely nothing to do with the course. He is not approachable when it comes to asking for help and his feedback on assignments is ridiculously pointless. In addition, his course offers nothing of worth to students. Beware.
Not a very nice guy and very agressive when you ask him for help - lots of fearmongering in his classes. I am not sure why mru did not fire him yet
This professor is awful he skims the textbook and then writes a 60-80 question multiple choice exam that requires an immense conceptual knowledge of the entire chapter, then blames the class for not studying enough. Half the class failed his non major into 1000 class
Group projects worth 50% of your grade. He also has team based class activities that you find out about in class and have to submit by end of class (including debates). He's a tough grader - wants you to write a lot. Also have to submit printed assignments or lose marks by like 20%.
This professor incentivizes participation in class by asking questions on the tests about personal stories from class and grades assignments by giving marks for mentioning what he brought up in class. There was absolutely no point going to the class seeing as all of the relevant material was covered in the textbook. Could not answer my questions
He is the most disrespectful teacher I have ever had. When I asked for help, I got told to “read the syllabus, read the notes, figure it out”. He is unapproachable and does not care about his students. I will never take another course with him again!
Easy grader for assignments but docks 20% if late. Midterms are long and he states that anything said in class AND in the textbook can be on it - as well as he has questions on random examples he used in class. Lectures are boring and not engaging. Respectful and nice when talking to him and he responds to emails really fast.
The hardest part of his class is the exam. The midterms, including 60 multiple-choice questions, required you to understand both the lecture and the textbook fully, as well as what he said randomly in class, to get good marks. He marks quite fairly and easily on the assignments.
I feel like the people who don't like his method of teaching are the same ones who skip all the time. He was pretty good, and my section did really well. He doesn't have group projects, and he is a fair marker. Just don't miss the lecture and read the textbook before class, preferably.
He's a bit of a tough grader and a tad strict but the assignments he provided were some of the most fun I've ever had in school. I can see why one may dislike his teaching style at first, I know I did, but it grew on me over time.
Donovan's class was a super easy intro psych class. He's clear about assignments, and they are pretty easy, all of them were max 3 pages with no citations. He's a chill grader as long as you stick to the rubric. His lectures can get a bit boring and he has an absolutely no late or extension policy but otherwise I'd recommend his intro psych class.
He's okay, kinda boring find and his teaching style for me didn't work, he does tell you what will be the exam. Make sure to study lots
He's a very good prof I highly recommend. He gives you lots of opportunity to get ur grade up. And makes the lectures less boring my telling stories that include his personal life and what we are being taught. Would take him again!
It seems like everyone likes dissing him, so I'm here to say that Donovan is actually so chill. Yes, his lectures are long and can drone on, but he's relatively funny, so I think that makes up for it. As well, I got 100s on all my assignments when I probably could've done better, so I would say he's an easy grader. Also, he curves the midterms. :)
Dr. Donovan made the lectures engaging and connected it to a lot of different situations to try to make sure that students understood the different concepts. His teaching style took a minute to get used to but he made the intro into PSYC course a pleasant experience.
