Professor Newman is awesome, he cares about all of his students and really wants to see them succeed. You do have to put in the work for your grade, but he helps you a lot if you need it. I took a Friday 8am 3 hour class, which would be absolutely terrible, but he made It super fun and entertaining. He's overall a super good teacher.

Most memorable professor Ive ever had at sbcc and Ive been here for 3+ years. You can just tell he loves what he does, and that really reflected throughout the semester. His lectures are interactive,funny, but informative. This is the perfect class for anyone who has a fear in public speaking, he prepares you to feel confident when presenting.

I took Donte for public speaking & mass media and I enjoyed all of it. Easy grader, hilarious, WOKE, truly cares about his students, wants you to succeed, not much homework, and no joke my favorite teacher ever. Assignments are very creative which I loved. SBCC if you see this give him a raise! Make sure you call him Dr because he just got his PhD!

He had fun online debates and gave a lot of important information in the zoom sessions, so I would highly recommend those if you want to get a good grade on your assignments. The only critique I would have is that he could improve the clarity of assignments, however I understand moving online out of nowhere must be extremely difficult.

TAKE THIS CLASS. Took his summer class and it seemed like it was too much work but it was actually super easy and straightforward you just need to be aware of due dates. There is only one paper and all quizzes are open book with unlimited time. No lectures. Dr Newman gives great feedback and is supportive. Easy A, plus the class is enjoyable!

Probably the most fun class you'll have. Not only because you do a ton of fun stuff, but mostly because Dr. Newman is hilarious and amazing and not like any professor I've had. Super easy all you have to do is show up and write a speech every so often. Little to no homework at all. Thouroughly enjoyed myself in this class.

An amazing teacher. I took his COMM 235 (Debate and Argumentation) over the summer and absolutely loved it. He was very caring and interested in both my academic life and personal. He was so so encouraging and how a teacher should be.

TAKE HIS CLASS!! I took him Spring 2020 and literally was the only class I was so excited for. Overall he's such a chill dude and is super passionate about his job. You will definitely learn and you'll be having fun at the same time.

Dr. Newman was a great prof! He gave good feedback and clear guidelines about what he was looking for. Not too many assignments throughout the semester, but he posts them all at the beginning, so get ahead on some of the discussion posts if you can. Start writing your speeches DAYS before they're due, otherwise it'll be clear you just wrote it.

Lots of work but it is not unnecessary work like a lot of classes. They are all very similar and repetitive so you can see yourself get better throughout the semester although very time consuming.

Donte is a GREAT professor super chill & lenient allows late work but don't take advantage of it because at some point he will deduct points usually not a lot the class consist of a couple quizzes based of chapter slides, speeches 3 are major the rest are short, & writing assignments grading criteria is clear overall an easy A if you do the work

TAKE THIS CLASS! I had to take this class, but he made it fun! We had our serious debates that were heavy writing, but we had the chance to do silly debates, and we got to talk about it with each other! The serious debates involve a lot of writing, but with time you get used to it, and you can choose the topic as long as it fits criteria!

I loved Public Speaking with professor Newman! After not doing so well under another professor, Newmans structure and ability to work with me made this class very enjoyable. You can expect to do 3 big speeches throughout the year worth the majority of your grade, and then an extremely easy final which is fantastic. There are 10 question quizzes

Take him.Yes, there will be speeches to write, Personal narrative, informative, and persuasive. Read chapters or just look at google slides, quizzes will be a breeze. Only other assignments- reviewing other people's speeches and outlines which was very beneficial. He so personable and nice. really caring. pick him

I loved this class and the professor so much! He was awesome. There were a few assignments that I didn't care for (discussion posts where you analyze a Ted Talk, etc.). But for the most part, it was a great learning experience with a caring and involved professor. Definitely one of my favorite professors at SBCC.

I took COMM 131 for public speaking & I highly recommend taking it online, there's no Zoom meeting besides when having to present online! He grades very light and you only present with 5 people max! Theres only 4 max presentations (including final).

This guy is the best professor/ teacher I have ever had. Not in college but in everything. He is the most caring compassionate and understanding teacher there is. For 235, take it in Summer. Less work. His course is really easy. As long as you put in effort, you will succeed.

Dr. Newman truly cares about your success. His constant reminders through Canvas portal and emails keep you on track for your assignments. There's no excuse to missing your projects! His approach to teaching is "workshop" like and if you participate, you will receive the grade you want.

Professor Newman is an extremely personable professor who puts you at ease in the first meeting and never intends to make class goal unreachable. He has an open door policy that is really reassuring. You can learn a lot about yourself in his public speaking class.

he's funny and generous w/ grading, u just gotta follow instructions. as an introvert, public speaking is tough for me & i was very worried, but was able to pass this class easily. highly recommend taking it online if ur like me! there are 4 speeches & some simple non-proctored quizzes on the textbook. i personally didnt care for the textbook tho

Dr. Newman is a super kind person, and he's a lot of fun to speak to if you go to his zoom meetings. However, the assignments were not very interesting. Each week we would have a discussion, which often felt like I was writing the same thing over and over again in my responses. Overall, the class is easy, if a little boring.

Dr. Newman is very encouraging professor who goes out of his way to support his students. He is available to listen and help with course material or otherwise. The assignments in this class are fun and thought-provoking. By far my favorite class I've taken here and I enjoyed it so much that I would recommend any course taught by him.

There wasn't one class that I didn't leave without my cheeks hurting from laughing so much. Dr. Newman is amazing at what he does. His course is engaging and inspiring. Public speaking was hard for me because of my anxiety and often spent a few hours drafting each speech, but listening to other's speeches was an awesome learning experience.

Amazing professor, Class was fun with a light workload. Speeches on Zoom were nerve-wracking, but Professor Newman's humor and personal approach made it enjoyable and easily my favorite class. The textbook was a free online ebook, and quizzes were easy read the short chapter, and you'd have all the answers. Could not recommend this class more.

This course was straight-forward. Complete your assignments and you will earn the grade you want. Dr. Newman cares about your success--just as much as you do! If there is any chance to participate in his optional Zoom meetings, attend! You'll gain as much as you put in. Greatly recommend this professor to everyone, especially Communication Majors.

Dr. Newman truly cares about his students and WANTS YOU TO PASS! Each assignment is straightforward and relatively easy as long as you truly put in effort. Reading the textbook is not 100% necessary, you succeed with a skim of the reading. He is inspirational and very positive and encouraging. I will be taking another one of his classes.

The grade feedback seemed generic each time but the class was not hard and the speeches were relatively short at around 5 minutes. Two mandatory zoom speeches required, final was a recorded speech. Really liked his enthusiasm and would recommend him to anyone. Not too much work each week really, just practicing.

He's a funny teacher, makes class interesting. Public speaking can be a hard topic for some but he makes the class very interesting. But he's not very helpful when helping with outlines, and he's a tough grader.

If you try in class and are confident, you'll get a good grade in the class, and it's a nice way to practice public speaking without too much risk. He can tell when you tried with a speech, and that's all he really asks. Super funny too, so showing up to class was something to look forward to!

Topics are controversy but also interesting to challenge myself. Instruction is clearly displayed+explained. Prof is very dedicating in giving feedback & I improved so much from that. He is incredibly caring, and emphasizes that he wants his students to be prepared for life outside of college, and encourages using the assignments he gives as learning opportunities about whatever topic you want to know more about.
