Impossible to contact outside of classroom. Relies too heavily upon WEB site that is not up to date, poorly constructed and difficult to use. Makes verbal changes to syllabus and assignments at the very end of class.

She is very condecending, and unapproachable. She makes changes to the course all the time and is probably the only teacher who made me feel stupid for asking a question even though it was Spanish 101. Take anybody else if possible.
She is not helpful at all. She's never clear on explaining any assignments. She never replies to your emails and she is very hard to get along with.. The only people who got A's or B's were people who already knew spanish & more than 1/2 of the class dropped because of her inadequate teaching. Try not to take her..
she's awesome. She has great teaching methods and works really hard in her classes. She really wants her students to learn. She makes every effort to make sure everyone is learning. I asked questions all the time and she always helped me in class and in her office. I wish she was teaching 103 next semester.
Dora is the best teacher I've had in my college career so far. But don't take her class if you are not serious about learning Spanish. For those of you who really want to learn, not just get an easy A, she is the teacher for you. Inspiring, multiple teaching methods, lots of inclass activities, and minimal lectures. I have learned so much from
Dora is the best spanish teacher I've ever had! I have learned so much and now have a passion for this foreign language i once found intimidating! If you really want to LEARN something then she's the right professor for you.
Excellent teacher, if you're willing to work, you'll learn a lot. She is challenging but it's completely worth it because you come away with a wonderful understanding of the language and culture.
She rocks. Really good teacher. Somewhat aloof sometimes, but I think it was more professionalism than haughtiness. But she is totally hot. OK, I want her ranking to stand by itself. I got an A and I had to WORK, but she's got such a killer bod! Must have been a ballerina or something! Good class.
Profa Dora is a great teacher. SOmetimes, however, she can be a little unclear about the homework, so make sure you pay attention and you'll be fine.
Profa Dora is very helpful and nice. She has a lot of passion towards the language and culture. She does give out so much work to do, but I recommend taking her class because you'll gain so much knowledge in her class. She gives out fun projects and presentation assignments too.
She is un clear about home work. Assigns tons of work!!!! Unless you want to be a spanish major do not take her!!
she is very unclear about homework, class work/group work etc...This teacher overloads you with so much homework.I wish i never took her class.
she does give a lot of homework, but that's pretty normal for any language class. the due dates are a bit unclear at times. i like all the different writing activities - they're unique and creative. the class is harder than my spanish 101, but i also think i'm learning a lot more as well.
You would think that a Spanish 101 class where you know nothing would be more explained and more help from your professor but that is the opposite of this class. She is a very confusing teacher and seems to have her teaching ways all over the board. She does not present things clearly and just makes you feel more dumb then when you went in.
She is a relatively good professor. She gives out a lot of homework and is sometimes very unclear about what she wants you to do, but I rarely studied or did any of the homework, but I got very high A's in all four classes I took from her.
she's super nice and you know she loves the language. its not an easy class, but if you pay attention and do all the work you'll learn a lot. I did pretty decent in her class with a low A. Just finish all the online work on time and study your words and you should do well. she does grade on attendance though
Absolutely love her! Amazing professor... She's tough... but do the work and show up and TRY and you'll do well. Being tough, in her case, is a huge advantage because she really TAUGHT me.
Spanish is the 4th foreign language that I have studied. I would rank Prof. Dora among the top 5% of all language teachers that I have encountered throughout the years. She is very passionate about Spanish, which is apparent in her teaching style. If you are serious about learning Spanish, I would highly recommend her class.
I took her Spanish 102 class and it was great. We always had such a great time. Homework assignments are a little unclear at times so make sure you pay attention. Show up to class, do the assignments and you'll do great. It is a college course after all.
Not easy to get along with. Didn't even teach the spanish newbies in class basic vocab assumed every1 knew how to already understand/answer basic spanish & questions. More than half my class dropped out bc she was so rude and not always clear. Has a love for spanish and everything from spain including her husband, wedding, accent, etc
Professor Dora is very knowledgeable and loves the subject. She also speaks spanish almost 100% of the time. People that complain about that should never take a language class, guess what, that's the way you learn a second language! Guys will enjoy being in class...enough said...
Best teacher I have ever had!!! She is very enthusiastic about teaching spanish. There is a lot of homework due, but it's not very different from any other college course. If you really want to learn spanish, you have to take her her!
She is a great teacher. The class is very intense. I am taking 101 and we have already watched a spanish movie and gone to a theatre. She loves her work and inspires students. Like any other prof. she will be difficult if you don't do your work but if you pay attention in class, ask her questions, you will be fine. She gives quality lessons!
Great teacher! I recommend her to any student wanting to learn Spanish. She is super helpful and she actually enjoys teaching and wants the best for her students. Take her class!
Great professor. Very enthusiastic. I recommend her to everyone. She's very helpful and is very genuine. I never enjoyed Spanish until I took her class, she changed my outlook totally. TAKE HER CLASS!
She may seem snippy to some, but she's very caring and really is passionate about what she teaches. She gives you extra credit opportunities like going to see Spanish plays. She grades very fairly, and is very helpful. Muy Bien Professora!
Profesora assigns a lot of homework and can be unclear sometimes but overall has a high passion for the spanish culture. She also uses a lot of her own tools. expect to do a lot of work.
Awful teacher. I you haven't taken a Spanish class in highschool do not take! She expects her students to be pretty much fluent and is very hard to follow. One of the hardest classes i have taken as far as classwork. 19 units is semestre and this class is by far taking 80% of my time and barley keeping a C. Kids explode in her class out of anger!!
This class turned into a nightmare . Teacher is uncomfortable to be around and awkward . She assigns boatloads of pointless work just to keep you busy . Moves very fast through material almost impossible to keep up . DoNOT TAKE THIS CLASS .
This class can be difficult if you do not have the time to spend on the work assignments, which they can require alot of your time. You will learn ALOT in a lil amount of time. But if you do have the time to spend on studying then the class should be a piece of cake, ESPECIALLY because profesora Dora gives lots of opportunities for extra credit!
This is the same guy from a comment down 10/17/12. Iam writing another post because iam FED UP i just spent the whole weekened on shcoenburns boatloads of busy work and iam in a WORLD OF HURT. her class has done nothing but get more and more unclear as the semester has gone on. No one passes her class period!!! all the goods review were a lie!
TERRIBLE TEACHER!! Did all of the work, studied my butt off for her tests, formed study groups made flash cards and still got D's on the test. She gives A LOT of HW. She expects you to already know the material when you walk into class. Is very rude when asking questions. Grades very hard. It's not worth the stress. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Not a fan! I wish I took someone else. She's not the worst teacher I've ever had but I've been spoiled with some amazing Spanish teachers at mesa. Take this class if you really, really like theatre and don't want to practice grammar at all. I learned nothing new as far as grammar goes and at this level I was hoping to challenge my skills.
I agree with most of the reviews here that she assigns a lot of homework. She is a demanding teacher and expects you to do well. It might be off putting to some students but this is how a university level is taught and you should not expect to be babysat because you are not in kindergarten anymore. Take her classes if you are a serious student.
If you plan to learn Spanish, do not take her!!! Class goes by fast and every assignment and test are very challenging. IF you know a lot of Spanish and ready for the challenge, you have to spend a lot of time on the material than other courses.
Very demanding & passionate about Spanish. She gives a lot of homework & she makes sure you do it. I learned quite a bit in her class & while challenging, also enjoyed it. She can be quite strict, but she's also respectful & compassionate. If your Spanish is weak, do the homework, visit Profa in office hours, and do extra work. Totally worth it!
She has an amazing passion for languages one that will take you beyond your level. If you struggle in the class be sure to ASK for help, she will clarify until you fully understand it. Her test on the other hand, some of the most difficult tests I ever took! You really have to be in the class to pass the class, if you miss a class you'll be lost.
-I've struggled in learning Spanish for 2 years of taking it in high school but she had made learning FUN, INTERESTING, and EASY. -Honestly, the HW load isn't any different from any other class. -Also, like any other class, don't expect to pass the exams if you don't study. -Extremely passionate!! Best professor I've ever had!!
She is extremely smart and educated. Her teaching style isn't my favorite though. The class is hard, a lot of homework. Reading material is advanced. But still she is such a source of knowledge about Spanish language, culture and theater and is happy to share it with you.
I had to take another Spanish class for my 4 yr. college, so I decided to take it over the summer. I was worried because it was Spanish 3, 5 days a week, 3.5 hours a day. I absolutely loved it! I learned more in this Spanish class than any other's i've taken in high school or college. She is very interactive and you have alot of freedom w/ projects
I like that the class was interactive and not all lecture. She is a good professor and helps prepare you for tests and real world. However doesn't have much patience for students.
She's a great teacher, she wants you learn spanish, she's multilingual and knows what she is doing. The class moves fast and is hard to pass if you have no prior experience with spanish or don't have the motivation to actually learn. The tests aren't hard if you study, there's a good amount of homework. Take her class if you want to learn.
I took her for 101 and 201. I had a terrible experience with her in 101, and now I see that it was the Spanish language I disliked not her. I also took 102 with a much higher rated professor and didn't notice much of a difference in teaching. She is an extremely tough grader for sure. Overall I feel that the Spanish at Mesa is too hard.
Tough teacher and a tough grader. The class is fast paced. She pushes you to learn. Being armed with Span101 means that you will do better in 102, 201, 210 etc. Exams are hard, and the final was god-awful difficult so prepare yourself and study. Make flash cards. Always do her extra credit. You will need it. Don't absent. Every class counts
She can be very helpful but as one of the the spanish teachers who leads the study abroad shes kind of let it get to her head. She gives out a lot of little assignments and your always working with other people.
professor Dora Schoenbrun-Fernandez is very friendly and easy to ask for help. She makes a two and a half hour class go by fast with her proactive learning activities. you will have to work hard to do well in this class due to the homework load and tough tests and quizes. make sure to go to class! one of the better spanish teachers i have met.
Excellent professor, truly dedicated and passionate about language education. If you're a serious student looking to improve your Spanish, this is the class for you, if not, there are easier professors.
What a fantastic profesora. She is all around a great and caring teacher. If you are an honest student, attempt to learn Spanish, and put in the effort, you will learn a great deal from Profa Dora and she makes learning Spanish fun. Best wishes to her!
Profa Dora is a great teacher! However, you MUST attend class or you will miss key assignments. She does NOT accept late work. Use a planner so you can write down all assignments and deadlines. Be prepared to do a lot of group work in this class. It is a good idea to have another classmates contact information. You will learn a lot and have fun!
Professor Schoenbrun-Fernandez is a wonderful teacher! She likes to make learning fun, and assigns cool projects giving students opportunities to be creative with language. She cares a lot about the success of all her students. I highly recommend taking her any class she teaches because you will learn a lot!
She really cares about her students and treats everyone equally. She is a very good teacher.
DO NOT take this professor if you value your time and GPA. No matter how much effort you put in this class, it wont ever be enough. She is too demanding with the work she assigns, no late work accepted, and tests are way harder than they should be. There are plenty of other great professors that wont slave drive you to insanity, look elsewhere!!
Profe is the sweetest person ever. She will help you get a good grade if you show that you are invested in the class. She teaches very well and is always willing to help you. People who struggle in this class are the people who do not ask for help or do not attend class regularly. She is an awesome person and I would take her class again for sure!
She will take over your workload for an entire semester. Her quizzes and tests are brutal. Grading criteria is so intense that she manages to suck all the fun out of learning a language. I suggest finding another teacher. Spanish is awesome but not worth the headache her class quickly becomes.
Profa Dora really wants her students to learn and improve their Spanish-speaking abilities. She challenges and supports each one using a variety of creative learning experiences. Her methods are motivational and appreciative, especially to those several students in class who had taken her before.
Very caring! She does make you work for the A but thats a good thing because it makes you learn more. Her tests are reasonable and she does assign a lot of homework so don't rely on tests to make your grade! She is very passionate at what she does . If you are serious about Spanish and truly want to learn take her!!
Profa Dora is very passionate about the Spanish language and its culture. Its not easy, but she truly wants you to learn. If you show up to class everyday, participate and do the work she assigns, youll do okay. The most important thing she looks for is how much youve improved from the beginning of the semester until the end. Shes very caring.
I've taken Profa Dora for 201&211. She is by far the best all around professor. She's approachable, cares about her students, easy to reach via email or office hours and encouraging. She assigns a lot of homework, but it's doable. She's someone who has really gone out of her way to learn the language and culture and it's truly admirable. Take her!
Profa Dora is very passionate about not only the language, but the culture. I have taken 2 of her Spanish classes so far and they were the only classes I actually looked forward to! If you skip a class however, you will need to play catch up. Profa really cares a lot about her students and it shows. Listen and participate, and you'll have a blast!
It is easy to tell that Dora is one of the most hardworking professors at Mesa. She devotes so much time outside of the classroom so that her students can have the best Spanish immersion experience possible, including coordinating the study abroad programs (she helped me go to Spain). She also has a VERY CLEAR schedule and grading criteria.
"Profedora" was great. Hers was the first college course I took in almost 11 years, and I was so glad that I ended up with her. She does like group projects and presentations instead of tests, FYI. My only critique would be that was not very effective at keeping the talkative members of class on task.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! So many good reviews on this Prof but she's the WORST if you wanna learn Spanish do not take her. If you are an A averaged student you would be lucky with a B. She expects you to understand everything she says by the 2nd class. Just adds stress to your life and lots of homework and super hard tests.
For a five credit class you really do the extra work. Worth learning from, patient if you show her respect. Very fluent in Spanish. Interesting person, someone to look up to. Enjoyed her class very much. She's straight to the point.
OUTSTANDING!!!! She's strict and you need to come to every class and do ALL the homework (obviously), but also she's SUPER inspirational and appeals to a variety of learning styles. She welcomes questions and encourages learning. She also evens out test grades by requiring projects, sometimes, instead. I'm definitely taking her again for SPAN201!
Dora is the most caring dedicated professor ever. She works really hard for her students. You HAVE to be willing to do your part or you won't be successful. If you want to learn Spanish and be inspired everyday of class TAKE HER. I will always be grateful for her. Lots of group work and presentations to really get you using your Spanish.
I really like her! She cares so much that you learn. My big criticism would be that she can be a little unclear on like what homework is due when. But honestly I think she's a great person and I enjoy her class and feel that I really am learning. Don't take if you don't want to participate/want an easy A.
This is not a fluff class, but if you pay attention, come to every class and try your hardest youll do fine, otherwise look out. Exams arent too bad, but there are a lot of them, study hard. There is a lot of in class group work, but no big group presentations. Final exam is monstrous and is 20% of your grade! I havent taken the final exam yet.
One of my favorite teachers ever! She's chill and lenient, but also super passionate about Spanish! Class is very fun, interactive, and pretty easy. She teaches you beg. Spanish at the perfect pace. I took this half in class/online but she still managed to make both really great experiences! Has a great teaching method and cares about each student!
I couldnt have asked for a better teacher! She could tell I had some experience with spanish so she trusted me to help the other students. I had her for SPAN102 and I went to Spain with her for SPAN201. Shes so passionate and cares so much about her students, she will notice when you put 100% into the class and you will succeed if you do.
I took Profa Dora's Spanish 101 class in the Fall of 2019 and the class provided a solid foundation for my continued learning of the language. Profa Dora genuinely wants all her students to learn not only the language but the cultures of Spanish speaking countries. Show up, participate, ask questions, and do the work. Be on time for quiz days!
If you are serious about learning Spanish, Dora is the professor for you. Took 3 classes with her and wish I could take more. She will put you to work; expect essays, presentations, group projects, skits, speeches, videos, etc. so make sure you budget enough time for her class. Do not try to turn in anything late or ask for special treatment.
If are a native speaker, she will grade you incredibly harsh. I got a B on my Conversation Final, yet people who were honestly terrible at Spanish got A's. Also, she tries to push Castillian Spanish on the class, and speaks in a terrible accent. She doesn't try to speak correctly and has Castillian pronunciations.
She's difficult to work with, gives lots of busy homework and in general is not a very nice teacher. Avoid at all costs.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME
This professor means well. However, she is very disorganized. She doesn't answer questions during her lecture's and bounces around different topics. She does not allow late work. She goes over topics in her lectures and homework in Spanish when the whole purpose of taking this class is to learn Spanish, leaving English speakers behind.
I really enjoyed my class with profe Dora! She's a great teacher and truly makes things fun. This isn't an easy A, you need to put in the work but she's a fair grader. I'll miss her class and her Spanish dad jokes. You can tell she loves Spanish and loves to teach! I recommend her if you're serious about learning Spanish.
I took prof Dora for Span101 and she is a great teacher as long as your trying and doing the work! When you need to ask questions she always replies quite fast! She is a fair grader. She does require the cameras to be on & you have to participate in clase a lot :) I would forsure take her again
Profe Dora is a wonderful profesor and always willing to give advise and improve her student's fluency in Spanish. Classes are fun and many different activities and themes throughout the semester that make class enjoyable. I would recommend Profe Dora to anyone wanting to improve their Spanish.
Profe Dora is amazing! I love her all inclusive teaching style. She made it easy to understand what we were learning from chapter one. Doing the homework is very important as you will need it for the following class. She is very patient in the case you don't understand! For real 101 learners, I would highly recommend!
Has more work than any class i have taken in my life for a Spanish 101 class she has hours of homework every week if you have a job be prepared to have little to no free time as she assighns hours of homework way to much work for a Spanish 101 class this is not a final class it is Spanish 101 yet she feels the need to give hours and hours of work
By far one of the worst proffersors I have had assigns hours of homework every week more than any class I have taken often expects you to learn material that she has unclearly taught many students in the class are confused and often have no idea what is going on in the class she expects you to know everything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
The professor is very nice but very strict when it comes to class. She expects her students to know everything already and seems very passive aggressive. A LOT of homework, I honestly don't recommend taking her class.
An A+ Profe who creates an inspiring learning space, igniting curiosity for Spanish. From day 1, she sets clear expectations for attendance, participation, and study requirements in a more challenging FIVE-credit class, emphasizing self-paced learning. She even offers extra credit and reminds you how to succeed in almost every class. Learned a lot!
honestly nice professor on her good days, If you like being put on the spot and made to feel like a complete idiot in front of your peers this class is for you.
At first I thought Dora would be a difficult professor, and I was kind of right, but its a good kind of difficult. She speaks in Spanish most of the time, and very quickly, but this is good if you're preparing to do Spanish 202. She cares about her students' growth, and grading is based largely around rewarding students for their effort. Fair.
Online, the class takes about an hour a week (not including mandatory lectures). Things are graded pretty leniently. If you like Spanish, it's a chill class to practice speaking in, because she'll require you to do so. I liked it!
I cried multiple times because of this professor. She is very strict, and would not allow any leniency on inability to attend a class, or allow for mistake corrections. Also there is some coursework due prior to classes, like morning of, so please beware of that. I cannot tell you how many times I missed an assignment that was due at 9am.
The instructor, while polite,is condescending and directs u to confusing instructions. The workload is overwhelming with daily assignments that are nearly impossible for working adults. The course, crammed into 5 weeks, involves heavy homework, lab work, and a textbook.Despite similar metrics,I received an F,while a Spa-speaking student got a passing D.
Profe is a tough but inspiring teacher who sparked my love for languages, leading me to switch my major. Her class requires effort: attend, take notes, and do the work. It's rewarding. I actually learned! I gained skills, friends, and her support, including a letter of recommendation. If you're looking for community, this is the class for you.
Professor Dora has high expectations, but her teaching style makes the workload manageable. Engage with the material, use resources like ChatGPT and Unstuck AI, and you'll find success in her SPAN101 course.
Profe was very understanding with my situation while still pushing me to do my best and continue to work hard. I actually decided to double major because of her! I will absolutely be taking more courses with her.
