This is a hard class. She teaches it well however. Just go to office hours-very helpful. Go to class! It helps and keep up with the work. Also do the labs ahead of time-will help with tests. She's a nice teacher.
Lectures are boring and straight out of course books. Same with all CSE200 classes though. She does try to demonstrate examples from the book visually. Attendance is taken each time. Possible bonus points towards end of quarter.
D. Close is a very nice lady. Extremely helpful, actually WANTS us to pass.. it's her boss you have to watch out for.. Enjoyed the class tho!
Teaches basically out of the book. Programming class; we rarely will program or see her program though... To be honest, I barely learn anything in lecture. I either have high standards when it comes to teachers, or about half of the professors simply can't teach. On that note, I have heard that the other teachers are better for this class.
The class was structured so that she went over a powerpoint for the first 10-15 minutes then we were given a group activity to complete by the end of class. She was very nice and tried to be helpful, although she did not seem well versed when it came to RESOLVE. Activities were annoying at times but the class was very easy for me. YMMV
Nice lady, didn't really learn much from her though.
Great instructor. If you pay attention in class, you will do well. She does her best to make class interesting and get people involved. Very helpful and accommodating to students.
Class is taught completely out of the book, which you had to read in order to do the homework. She doesn't seem like she really knows what she is talking about. Every time i ask a question she can't give me a straight answer. Barely get to code or see her code. Try a different teacher.
Not the most pleasant experience for me, but she is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. Get to know her and go to her office hours and she will do her best to help you out. It is obvious that she cares about her students and wants them to do well.
Lectures were pretty boring but she got through what was needed and all information is in the Lab book including slides. The textbook is required because parts of your prelabs come from them. She allowed for a cheat sheet on the final and her quizzes were fair.
Gives extra credit. Best of the CSE teachers. Really nice and tries to make the class as easy as possible (which isn't a whole lot since it is such a huge class), take her if she goes back to teaching CSE 200
Really nice and pretty easy. If you pay attention to her in class you should have no problem doing well. She writes her tests to be over the material she has covered in class. Pop quizzes every once in a while that review the previous lecture, basically just an attendance check but worth 10% of the final grade so go to class!
Overall an excellent teacher who seemed to go at a pace that helped students understand the material. She actually genuinely cares about her students unlike some other professors. I was able to learn quite a lot because of how effective a teacher she was.
Very good for operating systems II. She is much better at teaching this than CSE221.
Knows her stuff, makes lectures interesting. Exams are fair, homeworks are meh, and the labs can get difficult. She uses Piazza, so you can ask anything you want and get an answer within hours. I'd recommend her.
It was a 7 week session, and she really explained things very well. Attending class was very helpful as well, though I didn't do well on the midterm, I did fine on the final. At times she is not as helpful on homework as you would like. But just keep trying and you'll be fine in her class. Hopefully take another of her classes in the future!
She is a wonderful teacher. Although her class is a little difficult, she explains topics clearly and always gives good examples to reinforce the topic matter.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. AVOID AT ALL COST.
She's great you have to really talk to her to completely understand where she is coming from but she is a very helpful and smart individual
Awful teacher, never answers questions, when she does always vague answers or "I don't want to give away the homework answer" Never referenced the textbook once in the class. Slides she posts don't help you at all. You must attend and take good notes to have any chance of success
Covers material thoroughly. Challenges students with homework but provides students with all the tools to use to solve problems. I really enjoyed this class.
Not a hard class but teacher takes off many points. Theres a grade key so grades cannot be questioned even if in my case she took off for doing it right just slightly different then on her slides. Majority of points taken off for thinking I might have been guessing. Ended up with 89.44 and wouldnt let me argue my grades. A very frustrating course.
Make sure you read the textbook to understand every concepts. Some concepts may need to be memorized clearly. Then you will be fine on the exams... The quiz is easy, and I almost got full points on both of the two quiz make sure you understand the chapters that she elaborates on,,,,'elaborate'..I mean, talks more than 30 minutes...
Course is set up with 1 midterm, 2 quizzes, 1 final exam, 4 labs and 3-4 homework assignments. It might not seem like a lot of work, but the labs are long and you most likely will have never done anything like it before. She's a good instructor, much better than the other guy, but grading is rough, so be ready.
Close is a nice teacher and is usually energetic, though sometimes the lecture material runs on the boring side. Her grading can get picky, especially if you learned runtime analysis with a different prof for 2321, but if you're willing to learn it her way and do it her way, there shouldn't be any surprises.
The material is pretty boring (in my opinion), but Dr. Close is very willing to help and explain topics. The labs were pretty easy and interesting, and the exams weren't too bad.
Professor Close is one of the best professors who teaches 2321. She is very energetic giving lectures and willing to answer your question. Homework are not easy but it helps you learn the material better. Midterms and finals are fair. If you learn hard, you will get good grades.
Prof. Close is quite possibly one of the best CSE professors OSU has had the fortune to have. She is very nice, smart, and energetic in the classroom. Her classes aren't ones you want to skip though. Everything on the homework's and Exams are discussed in lectures so don't miss a single one, I mean unless if you just want to (possibly) pass.
Prof Close is the best professor I have had at OSU. She teaches a rigorous course, but she explains topics thoroughly and gives students ample time in and out of class to ask questions. Labs were difficult, but very fair and rewarding. Close's class never feels like busy work, she puts great effort into her lesson plans and course content.
Prof. Close is definitely not the easiest professor in the department. She is, however, one of the best lecturers in the department. She puts an interest in her students you rarely see and will always go over a topic again if the class does not understand it. She is one of my favorite professor at OSU.
Excellent professor. Tests aren't overly difficult. She teaches a tough class, but the she explains everything thoroughly and easy to understand, plus provides you with help outside of class.
A little disappointed this semester because she didn't give out answer sheet to hw problems which would help me prepare for exams better. I would say it's the best way for me to learn through looking at standard answers and figure out how to do similar questions. However, I can't get them in her classes. Other than that, she is a good lecturer.
Dr. Close was an amazing professor. She was so kind, caring, and truly wanted her students to succeed. Her lectures were straightforward and clear. She never tested on anything she did not cover and never threw any curve balls. I was very successful in this difficult course and I can say I owe it all to her. She is by far my favorite professor.
Dr. Close makes Foundations 1 very easy. She explains everything very clearly, and does plenty of examples. She holds frequent office hours as well, so I was always able to ask questions when I needed help. Easily one of the best CSE lecturers.
Slides are completely useless, topics are boring and repetitive. Find another professor if you want to learn something.
A very good teacher, she knows how to communicate the course material. If you come to class and pay attention you will succeed. She doesn't just read off slides she works through examples and really helps you understand things.
A very great one professor. I paying attention in the lecture and quiz is just what she says. The midterm has more harder questions but is still very fair. I liking this class.
Professor Close is a great lecturer and she gives really helpful materials/worksheets. The exams in this class can be tough but she gives some extra credit and grades pretty leniently. She also really cares about her students and puts a lot of effort into organizing the class. She was even able to end class early almost every day, which was great.
Prof. Close is a very caring and solid professor, but the lack of structure and outside material in the course really hurts learning potential. You pretty much need to grasp everything from lecture and even if you do the exams are exponentially harder. It's tough to learn everything properly, and the way she designed the course doesn't help.
Slides dont have many useful things. Note are small with awful handwriting. Talk too fast and leave out many steps when solving problems and make you confused. It feels like you goal in her class is to figure out her hw questions. Always end class early. You have to figure out many things by yourself on YouTube. Not bad, but definitely not good.
She is the single worst professor in this class. The lecture itself is fine, however she will give no answer to homeworks at all. You will need to learn all by yourself. The final exam is extremely unforgiving by testing on something that she only touched for 10min in the class.
I genuinely dont know what the reviews beneath this are talking about. Doreen Close is a phenomenal professor and probably the best professor I have had at OSU. Her slides are incredibly helpful, she does in fact tell you all of the answers to the homeworks, and she is super fair with grading. I learned so much in this class. 10/10 would recommend
Doreen is one of the better choices for 2321. She is very clear when explaining things and asks multiple times if anyone has any questions. You will need to attend lectures to get all of the notes she writes on the board in order to fully understand the material. Exams are fair. She certainly cares about her students as well.
This class was tough but Professor Close really enjoys teaching it and does a great job. Definitely one of my favorite classes/professors ever, and getting a good grade is doable especially if you come to class. She also really does care about her students and trying to be a fair grader.
THIS IS THE BEST Professor for CSE 2321. I tried to take this course w a diff Professor earlier and I almost failed so I had to drop. When I took it with Doreen it was like night and day. I went to every lecture because they MADE SENSE. Shes also funny. Shes caring and if you see her at office hours shell genuinely try her best to help. THE BEST
She wasn't super clear but she's fine. She's just super strict and quite awkward. She was actually bragging about how she failed graduating seniors on time to emphasize on her rules. The lectures were super dry and the exams were hardest. She's also very feminist like other professors in the department lol.
Dr. Close is one of my favorite profs and I'm lucky to have her again. It's a pretty tough class, but she has good explanations. Midterms are also rather challenging though. Only downside is that none of the notes are on Carmen, so you really need to come to class and do the group work to do well.
If you take this class expect to loose points. This class is as much about learning the material as it is learning how to think her way. Be prepared to memorize definitions, and loose lots of credit completely correct answers justified differently than how she would. That being said she is a very good lecturer and cares a lot about her students.
Can't speak for other classes, but for Foundations 1 I think she's been great. Lectures were really interesting, and she is very accommodating. First midterm was tough, and quizzes are fair but can be tricky, but with COVID19 I can't speak on how normally the other tests would go. I'd definitely take her classes in the future.
An amazing instructor. She is incredibly understanding and helpful, almost as if she is your mother instead of your instructor. The class is fairly difficult, but not without reason. She provides ample clear resources to catch up on any material. Lots of time in class for practice and to ask questions. She is also very clear about her expectations.
Best professor I've had at OSU. I really hope I get her again.
She'll take off points left and right if the justification for your answer isn't the exact same she has on her key. She doesn't give you the key to the homeworks or quizzes. The lectures are pretty dry. For the first week or two she repeatedly bragged about her teaching and the power she had in the department.
Prof Close is a nice, experiencial and responsible professor. I like her teaching style and she really concerns for the students. Definitely would take her class again. Also, if taking her in-person class would be possible I can't wait to talk to her.
The most caring professor I have had so far in the CSE department. Tried to make the most of online classes and you could tell that she really cared for her students and wanted us all to pass.
imo. Dr. Close was one of my favorite professors, and I feel most of the poor reviews are just people salty over a bad grade. Clear learning expectations, understanding and willing to work with you, accessible, genuinely caring. You do need to know content but she is super clear about what to know. No real downsides that were her fault.
She is literally one of the nicest and BEST professors I have EVER had at OSU. If you are ever confused about anything at all, she will help you. She goes through the homeworks in class and will answer basically all of the questions. I promise you, you will love this professor.
Close is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is extremely lenient and you can tell she cares about each and every one of her students. She has amazing lectures and will answer any question you may have. She is kind of a tough grader but she gives good feedback and will always help you in office hours.
Close is a really great teacher. Her and I became friends because I was the class trouble maker, often skipped especially near the end, but she never treated me differently and somehow I continued to learn the content. Hard grader and I got a bad grade, but Im writing this because despite that she teaches well and cares for students.
Foundations 1 is not an easy course, but Professor Close made it super interesting. Weekly homework, about 8 quizzes, two midterms and one final. Remember to her office hours and you will be good.
Professor Close was the best professor I have had in the OSU CSE department so far. She makes the content of this class super easy to understand, unlike other professors who over complicate things. She is the sweetest lady in the world and really cares about you in and outside of class. If you are taking Foundations 1 I would try so hard to get her
Foundations 1 is not an easy class by any means. But Close is one of the best lecturers out there. You can literally stop her in the middle of her lecture and she'll clarify any doubts you got. Gave free points on exams and quizzes. Amazing lecturer and a very nice person. Would recommend any day
Doreen is a professor who truly cares about her students and makes an effort to make their lives easier where she can
You need to go to class and pay attention, if you do this and take good notes you will be fine. Most assessments are open note, but timed, going to class and asking questions is integral. Professor Close cares deeply about her students and is very passionate about the material - she wants to see you succeed, however, your efforts are critical.
You have to write your homework exactly like her answers to get points, which is not encouraging students to learn at all, but just to follow the rules. The percentage of quizzes is much higher than midterm and final, which makes it easy for you to lose points because the answers are not according to her standards.
If you're smart, you don't wanna take this instructor's class. Doreen is nice, but she is very demanding and teaches her students like kindergarteners. Very demanding about homework and quiz process but not willing to provide solutions! If I can learn everything in this course in 10 hours, I don't want to spend 40 hours and have to get a B.
She's an ok teacher with a cult fanbase at OSU but the class is rote. Most of the quizzes were verbatim of her lectures. She makes 15% of the grade attendance, which isn't very accommodating to people who prefer different mediums. Pretty dry material like most algo classes but made even harder to take the material outside this 1 specific class
She's the worst instructor I've ever met at OSU. She's almost neurotic about participation and will use unfair standards to judge your performance if you're lucky enough to be unliked by her. And try every way to deduct your participation points.
Although the class was online, she made the lectures very interactive, went over lots of practice problems, and answered any questions even in the middle of the lecture. She is also very understanding and genuinely cares about your concerns.
Very clear when describing course content. Respectful and nice to students. Content is difficult to begin with and will explain in detail when needed
Very tough grader, to get the full points on homework and midterm, you will need to match the exact wording as her answer. Extremely high late penalty. Very unfair about participation grade, lack of transparency in the participation grade calculations. Doesn't provide any answer keys or lecture notes on carmen. Nice person but very bad professor.
Professor Close is a great person. She is nice and makes sure students are keeping up. However, it's very unfortunate that her HW's, Quizzes, and Exams are unnecessarily hard and unforgiving. Examples she gives in class are much easier than things you'll see in Quizzes and exams. Furthermore, her wording/formatting on exams is terrible for online.
Professor Close is the best prof I've had at OSU. I struggled with some personal things during the semester and she met on Zoom with me to talk through it -- extremely caring. She delivers the material very well -- if you attend class, follow along, and take good notes, you should have no problem doing well in the class. Such fun material to learn.
Good professor. Always ready to help, and exams are easy if you put the effort into attending lectures. Office hours are very accessible. Quizzes and exams make up a large proportion of your grade. She is definitely the best professor for Foundations 1.
Didn't really teach a lot. She speaks very fast, just like we already know how to do with the problems. The way she taught was just providing solutions to some examples, making some students don't know what the correct answer should be when doing homework. She also made mistakes on calculation often.
Professor goes through lectures very fast which may miss lots of details. Graders are strict about group discussion activities.
Although maybe her lead-by-example style of teaching might not be for everyone, I'm very happy that I chose what seems to be the easiest section in what was a very tough class among my circle. Her posting the lectures and going through step-by-step made things a lot easier. Make sure to brush up on your summation skills before this class though.
Took this course over the summer. Her lectures were awesome. Professor Close explains concepts very well and is always open to questions. Also very direct when explaining concepts. Exams and quizzes are straight forward, and the class is very fair. The exams are the same difficulty as the quizzes, and overall very fair class
Dr. Close is an incredible professor who maintains the perfect level of difficulty and ease for a mid-level CSE course. She cares about her students and is passionate about the content she teaches. She is mellow and kind. She cultivates a very inclusive environment and ensures that everyone is on the same page.
Prof close is very welcoming and will never shame you for asking questions. Additionally she goes at a pace that is very mellow and easy to keep up with. Just make you are taking notes on what she says because a lot of the time it wont be in the slides.
Professor Close is great, she's great at explaining the material and at keeping up with questions asked during lectures and will often stay over class time to help out students who have concerns. The graders can be strict with giving you points and will often dock a significant amount due to simple errors, so that's something to watch out for.
She's very nice and is always willing to explain anything you're confused on. However, she kind of teaches you what specific protocol to follow in certain situations rather than an overarching methodology to follow that would result in you knowing what specific protocol to follow, so you'll probably need to review in-class examples often.
Is absolutely psychotic about participation. Threatened to COAM me over an argument of the webcam requirement in her classes. Consistently messes up when teaching problems in lecture. Lectures are not her teaching the material, but waiting for students to answer the problems for her. Do not get on her bad side. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!
she was a nice professor, lectures are recorded and the quizzes and midterms were exactly what was taught in lecture. definitely rewatch the lectures when studying and go to her office hours
Doreen is a nice but stubborn old lady. HWs due at 7pm Fridays to "prevent cheating," threatens COAM if the camera's off. Had to go to the bathroom and she mashed the request camera feed button like her life depended on it, so now I use a virtual camera. Piazza, a dated LMS from 2009 (lol) is used for extra material. She is fair and easy if you try
She's a pretty nice lady in general, but she's a little crazy about attendance. When teaching, she doesn't give you a general way to apply the concepts. There were a lot of times where I wished that she gave us a general guideline to help solve some of the questions.
A good lecturer all things considered but she is crazy strict with attendance. Will get very angry if you zone out during her online lectures or have camera off even briefly. All homework graded very harshly, and the lectures sometimes don't fully prepare you for the homework / exam questions. Not a BAD professor, but certainly an annoying one.
The professor is nice. Even though it's an online course, attendance is required and tasks a large portion into the final grade. Quiz every two weeks. 1 midterm.
Literally the sweetest professor I have ever had -- very obviously cares for her students, makes sure workload is managable, and homework/exam expectations are very clear, which makes it easy to do well.
Overall it's a okay class. Graders are tough points off from the smallest mistakes.Makes you feel stupid no matter how much you try. Doesn't get back to you .Attendance is mandatory and will go insane is your face is not showing. Throws out random quizzes and polls when you're not present. She's nice but very passive aggressive at the same time.
She WILL NOT post homework solutions. Wants students to go to office hours or ask her directly regarding each problem. As a student in engineering and only taking this class for a minor, I do not have time to go to every office hours/stay after class to beg for homework answers. Material that should take an hour to learn SHOULD NOT take 3 hours.
Close does well answering students' questions in class, but she doesn't provide homework solutions and grades exams unfairly, offering little partial credit. She also scolds students for not turning on cameras or making small mistakes. Her teaching lacks depth and fails to connect concepts like FSA, PDA and TM to prior knowledge effectively.
I like this professor!
Doreen was a very nice lady, and she cared about us doing well. However, I really didn't like her teaching style. The other foundation's classes did a lot more math-based proofs, which seemed more practical and useful than the work-based stuff we were doing. Her quizzes were difficult, and the graders graded all of the assignments very hard
Prof. Close's lectures really require participation to catch every information to prepare for the quizzes and exams, and the lectures are very passionate even though they are online. The exams only count 14% and 18%, while quizzes and assignments contribute big part towards the final grade. The contents are not so hard and the assignments are easy.
Professor Close is a great teacher and a very sweet person. Her homework and quizzes are fairly easy but you will have to put in a good amount of work. If you pay attention to the lectures the content is pretty easy to understand. The only thing is that she's very strict about missing classes, extensions etc, Put in the work you'll get a good grade
It's an easy class if you attend lecture and pay attention, and she's not a bad professor. However her notes felt very disorganized and chaotic, her handwriting isn't the best and the lecture overall could be presented in a more organized way. In office hours, graders are ok but always saying they cant "give you the answer" which limits help
It's an easy class if you attend lecture and pay attention, and she's not a bad professor. Just could not learn with her. Had to learn everything outside of class basically. She was very passive aggressive towards me in emails and was very petty over something that could've been resolved very easily. Took SP25.
Loves for people to come to office hours but belittles them the entire time, TAs are no different. You could get all the right answers on homework but if it's not EXACTLY as her mysterious homework key is, she will mark off full points and say "you should've paid better attention in the lecture." There are better profs for this section.
