Do not take this class I am serious. GO to normandale and take it. I still have nightmares about her. HORRIBLE
I passed out in the class all the time....the class wasn't too terrible, but wasn't exciting at all
No Comments
very difficult to follow, scatterbrained, absent minded, try ken
I would not recommend Doreen. She tries, but she can't teach. You can't follow her and she doesn't explain things well. Sorry if you have to take her course.
Avoid Doreen at all costs! She is not a very good teacher. I never go to class because I can't stand to watch her try to remember what she was going to say. She is a basket case. She really is a nice person, but she can't teach!
She's a nice teacher trying to explain the unintuitive, insane and inexplicable stuff of Quantum Mechanics.
Doreen made her classes fun. Just watching her scamper around the chalkboard was entertaining. She is also very helpful if you go to her office hours. Very friendly professor!
Read her online notes before come to class, do the old exams and voila.....score an A

She is simply a very boring teacher, who tests on material that should not be tested on. I took PChem 1, then this class, and boy, she really messed up the way to teach the class. Her online notes are helpful to score well, but any teacher has to be better/easier than her. She was terrible!
She's nuts! She's so hilariously nerdy. I love her vests.
Online notes were helpful, but that's it. Exams get harder and trickier each year!
Her lectures are all over the place. I found lecture to be pointless to go to. Homework assignments are exactly the same as the end of the chapter problems. Her tests were difficult. She will make you laugh at the stupid things that she does though.
very organized. powerlectures are so better than her handwritng. Ican tellshe words hard on hte course
This professor really does not know how to teach. The book actually does a better job of explaining the concepts than her lecture notes. Lecture notes and everything else is online. Hence, it is possible to skip class. The tests get trickier each year, so be careful! At least she offers some extra credit problems to help raise the grade.
Doreen is great!
She drove me up a wall...very spaz-y...lectures sucked, she purposely tries to trick you on exams. avoid her!
The worst professor I've ever had. She could not teach, her tests were absolutely ridiculous, and her "helpfulness" was just b.s. Avoid taking her at all costs!
I thought she was a really sweet lady. Unlike many other of my teachers, she allowed a bunch of extra credit (which was really needed). The questions from her tests were sometimes taken from the old tests...however instead of just have A-D scantron, it was like A-J...too many options. Shes very resonable and her lectures are very helpful.
A wonderful teacher.
Lecture was OK, not an interesting subject, but she gets excited about it. Tests were very hard, 8 choices on most questions with common mathematical errors as choices.
Pretty spastic, she jumps around a lot in class. But if you understand chemistry decently to begin with you'll be fine. STUDY for her tests, you'll never pass them otherwise. And she almost always uses old tests, I found them to be quite helpful studying from.
Although Doreen's lectures can be hard to follow, she is very helpful and easy to talk to if you go to her office hours outside of class. Also, when I took the class, she had just started something new: lecture-by-lecture "homeworks." If you read the book before each lecture, keep up with the homework problems, and study the old exams, you'll be OK
she talks very fast. her notes online are great! if u attend lectures and do hw, u'll do fine. her tests are just like the problems she does in class. i would definitely take her again.
Really interesting class, and incredibly easy. Lots of fun.
She is a very sweet lady and loves chemistry so much it is kind of weird. But she is always willing to help during office hours. Her tests are multiple choice (typically options A-H) which is hard, but she offers extra credit problems online so you can get up to 20 points (which ends up being 4 test questions). I'd take a class with her again.
You pretty much have to teach yourself or go to a better prof at a different time in order to do well. I learned absolutely nothing from her. Also, she recycles a powerpoint every semester and therefore does not work out any problems on the board.
If you care about doing well, Doreen's helpful and you can tell she works hard at the class. Great teacher.
Chem 1022 Really good at explaining and fair tests
FAST lecturer, but precise. lets you know how work in class effects lab and such. harder tests but nonetheless fair. definitely not a pushover class and doreen makes it that way, but in a repsectful way to students
Gen chem has a reputation, but I think it's based on people who have to take it for non-science programs. With five previous years of tests and finals online, it seemed useless to even do book problems. The course didn't go at all beyond what you'd expect out of a generic general chemistry course, and the professor was scatterbrained but helpful.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Never have I studied so hard for a class. Breezed through P.Chem 1 and Inorganic just fine, then took her and her god aweful tests. No matter how hard you study, be prepared for 40% tests and no sympathy. Wait a semester to take it with a different prof, trust me!
Doreen speaks quickly but is enthusiastic (love it), willing to meet outside of class and clarify problems, and rapidly responds to emails. She Provides lecture notes and PLENTY of review materials on line. Unless you just could care less or don't make a slight attempt at the homework, this class is both useful and easy.
Very average. She loves what she teaches, and that could fuel some people into taking this class with the prof. However, her tests are made in such a way that the averages are around 60-65%. She gives a semi-generous grading scale, but doesn't curve. If you think you can pull the tests off, you'll be fine. otherwise, wait for a prof that curves
Professor Leopold was a poor professor at best. She would try to answer questions of many students but she did an awful job at it. I paid very close attention to what she said and stuttering aside, she hardly explained a thing. On top of this nothing that she taught in lecture showed up on the test. All in all her lectures were absolutely useless.
Doreen seems a little crazy about chemistry but enjoys what she teaches. Its a little hard to understand her at times and the homework doesnt help a whole lot with the exams. She does provide all past exams along with the answer keys and those were EXTREMELY helpful when studying!! (strongly recommended). She is very helpful in office hours as well
She was really enthusiastic but her lectures were impossible to understand because she clicked thru her powerpoints so fast. Also every test question had about 8 multiple choice answers I'm NOT joking. Take it with another prof if you can because it was awful her husband (Kenneth Leopold) subbed for her one day and he was waaaay better
She explains everything at a slow pace. This makes her easy to understand. She clearly enjoys what she is doing. Her powerpoints are clear and useful for notetaking.
She's a good teacher. Her notes are all on powerpoint slides which you can print off and bring to class, and she blanks-out portions of the notes so you have to follow along and fill in the missing notes during class from here completed slides. Her tests are hard! Practicing with previous exams is the best advice out there in studying for her exams
Dr. Leopold is an enthusiastic and friendly professor; she has both a passion for and a commanding knowledge of chemistry. Excellent lecturer. Three midterms and a comprehensive final form the lecture grade. Exam questions have 8 possible multiple choice answers with very plausible distracters. She published past exams which were very helpful.
Doreen has a passion for chemistry, but lectures are useless to attend. We were not allowed to use calculators on exams, therefore strong math skills are needed. You will learn a lot of you are willing to study hard- she offers endless resources and old tests which is EXTREMELY helpful!
She rambles, mumbles, stutters and makes a mistake every once in a while. Her tests are fair and she frequently uses questions from the bountiful supply of old tests she gives you access to. Make sure you do the calculator free multiple choice practice problems and watch out for the calculator free midterms.
Her tests were extremely difficult, something she seemed to enjoy. The average for our class were lower than all of the other lectures by a lot! The second midterm is calculator free so you need to know how to do basic math with decimals and logs. Her lectures were helpful and straight forward, but a little boring at times.
STAY AWAY!!!!!
I was worried about Doreen after reading reviews, however I find her charming. She is quite awkward in class and in person but very personable. Her lectures seem a little confusing but if you visit her in office hours she is incredibly helpful. Tests are fair and if you use tutors and office hours you can get a decent grade.
NEVER TAKE THIS WOMAN! She teaches it like the whole class is grad students.
She is HORRIBLE! i quit going to lecture because she would just stick the book ion powerpoint and read thr4ough it so fast you couldn't write anytyhing down
She is the worst professor I have had yet. Yes, she is friendly in an awkward sort of way, and the class averages on exams are so horrible that the curve really is a great grade booster. But, going to lecture is completely pointless. She is much too scatterbrained and fast-paced to be teaching gen. chem
This class required me to learn basically everything outside of class. She goes through the slides so quickly you can't write anything down, and she seems to spend tons of time on easy concepts, but will blow through harder ones. I'm an EE student, I'm good at math and science and yet I could barely get a C+ in this class.
She was a very sweet lady. The lectures weren't bad either- she had a good mix of concepts and examples that we worked through together. I recommend you print out the slides and fill in the blanks... I didn't do that but I kind of wish I did. Office hours before exams were very helpful too.
I honestly think this is the worst teacher I have ever had. I studied for every test, but never felt prepared because most of the things on the tests were never discussed in class. I had to basically read the entire chapter for each unit, and I still was barely able to pull of a C+. I'm generally an A student. I would never recommend Leopold
I didn't skip lectures but you should. Read the book and do the homework during that time. So important: do *all* the practice exams she makes available to you, and learn the concepts those cover as best you can. The class is full of wretched little teenagers so if know the practice exams, you can beat the curve and get an A. Also, she's a sweetie.
Her lectures were extremely boring and did not cover the course material (which appeared on the test) clearly. (test ave. ~50%) She would start a sentence/thought then stop and go on to something else. Luckily it's still very possible to pass and do well in the class if you take time reading the textbook by yourself and go to the review sessions.
The lecture got a little boring sometimes but everything was clear and understandable.
Would not recommend Doreen Leopold. Her lectures were long, boring and confusing--it was hard to follow her train of thought, as she mumbles and seems to be talking to herself. I did skip a few times, but I wouldn't recommend it, it only becomes harder. However, bring Chem homework to class and use lecture time to do homework but still be attentive
Overall not a great professor. Lectures are long and boring and she does no help in explaining things. I'm an engineering student and she made Chem 2 extremely difficult for me. I would take a chance on any other professor in the chemistry department.
I took intro to Quantum Mechanics and Spectroscopy. As an AB student, I thought it was impossible to study for. She is clearly very intelligent, likable, and accessible but still not clear in her explanations. I studied a lot for this class and still ended up mostly guessing on the exams. No extra credit whatsoever.
doreen is an extremely nice lady however shes a horrible teacher lecturer. her lectures are all over the place and shes not very clear. i also dont think shes ever been able to answer a students question directly, she digresses too often.
Very sweet old lady, but her lectures are organized by her own "topics" which only kind of follow the text. If you generally don't like lectures, don't bother going to hers. Just read the textbook and DO PRACTICE EXAMS. ALL OF THEM. She had a generous curve.
She is a wonderful person to be around but sometimes my mind went blank during the lectures for minutes at a time. The material was very conceptual, mathematical, and hard to follow. GO TO CHEM FOUNDATION!! this was the most helpful tool in studying. Go to office hour to eat chocolate and chat about mysteries of quantum world.
Take the practice tests and understand the concepts behind questions so that you can work variations of the problems. Every exam had at least one conceptual question involving a graph or line equation. I basically taught myself the material from the text, lecture was wasted time. Got a good grade but not worth it, did not master material.
Professor Leopold goes above and beyond to help students succeed. She provides very detailed exam review sheets. Even though we have a solutions manual for the text, for some of the problems, she provided additional detail to explain the solutions. Her tests were very fair; we were tested on the material in the review sheets.
This prof genuinely cares about the success of her students! Her lectures are fairly average; but she provides students with all the tools they need to do well (notes, slides, book pages etc.) She is also very approachable and more than willing to answer any questions a student may have. Would take again!
Very good teacher who created a class that made learning quantum mechanics fun.
Professor Leopold knows how to present difficult material clearly. Lecture slides are put online which is helpful. Doing the non-graded homework helped a lot in preparing for tests (which aren't written to trick you), and while the study guides posted before each test were long, they outlined exactly what you should know. Great teacher!
Leopold is an incredibly fair and considerate teacher. Lecture slides aligned with her syllabus, and she provided plenty of study materials (review sheet, posted lectures, past exams) to prepare for exams. Very approachable and went out of her way to ensure that people could attend her office hours (always wanted more people to show up!).
Doreen goes through the material that she tests you on. As long as you go to class and fill out the note sheets that she provides, you'll have all of the information that you need to do well on the exams. I suggest that you do the optional book homework because her test questions are slightly similar.
Doreen is very nice and she means, but she can get confusing because she likes to go on different tangents about things and fumble with her words. Her notes can help for the tests, sort of.
Doreen makes difficult topics less painful to learn about. Her lectures are somewhat boring, but she is very nice and means well. She posts old exams and lecture slides online, which is really convenient for studying. As long as you review the material enough and do the optional end-of-chapter text book problems she provides, you'll pass.
she was cute, but kinda poor at explaining things in a way that made any sense. uses powerpoint and rarely draws on the board to show how to solve problems, which would have been really nice! hard not to fall asleep like every lecture. not too hard of a class though. dont buy the book and DO THE ALEKS! it helped me the most to do well
Prof. Leopold is a very caring person and professor. She is very accessible outside of class and there is plenty of study materials provided; an A in this class is very easily achievable. Instead of 3 midterms she does 6 shorter bi-weekly quizzes, which I found eased the stress considerably. ALEKS homework is optional, but I found that it is useful
Personally, I thought she was a decent teacher. Sometimes shes not the best at explaining certain concepts in depth, however overall, the lectures werent that bad. I would recommend reading prior to them though. Quizzes were a little challenging since multiple answers could be right. Shes very accessible and a very caring professor.
She's a super nice lady, and did the cutest Valentine's Day puns in chem lecture. HOWEVER, she will go on tangents and has problems getting out complete explanations. She tries hard to help students though, and will give you plenty of resources online (old exams, review sheets, etc.). I recommend the ALEKS over anything else
Doreen is one of the sweetest professors I have had and truly cares about her students. Sometimes her explanations could be confusing but she was usually pretty clear. We had biweekly quizzes which was nice and less stressful than 3 larger midterms. ALEKS is optional but helpful for tests. Gives plenty of study tools (old tests and book problems)
She is a very sweet and funny lady. I think she really cares about her students. I think her lectures are good. She provides a lot of study tools and resources to help her students be successful.
Doreen is a solid professor. She can be a little awkward in her speaking manner, but she really cares about her students and presents material clearly. Course material can be challenging, be prepared to put in work outside of lecture, read the textbook and do practice problems & ALEKS (optional). Her exams are very fair, no tricks. I recommend her!
Nice, but most learning must be done outside of class.
Super nice teacher. Structures lectures in a unique way; encourages students to print the slides off beforehand and fill in the blanks during class. I like this style of lecture because I can actually listen to her lectures, the only downside is that she's pretty boring. Extra practice outside lecture is a must to get a good grade like most chem
An amazing lady who's quite nice and quirky in a good way. Class isn't too bad if you stay on top of everything. The ALEKS helps a lot since her lectures can be hard to follow sometimes.
Overall a super nice lady. Funny and sarcastic. Goes on tangents sometimes in class, and tends to teach as if we're grad students who already have outstanding knowledge of chemistry. Still, her notes are clear and if you study what she teaches in class, you'll pass. I never read the textbook and only used it for practice problems.
Great teacher, makes jokes in lecture and knows what she's doing
Doreen is the sweetest professor ever. Her lectures are sometimes hard to follow, but doing Aleks helps a ton and will teach you everything you need to know. Also do the practice exams before a test. I really liked how it was 5 smaller quizzes rather than 2 big midterms, helped my grade a bunch because they were all very straightforward.
Doreen is the sweetest professor. Although chemistry isn't known to be an easy class, she makes it a lot easier by providing many practice exams, notes posted online, and many practice problems. The 5 quiz format is a life saver for your grade. She also clearly is passionate about chemistry. Take this class with Doreen, and you will succeed!
Doreen was a very kind, intelligent, and effective prof. She continuously allowed to meet with students outside of her scheduled office hours. Her lectures can be a tad dull at times, but it is general chemistry, so how exciting can they be? She likes to put tricks on her quizzes, so know your stuff. Skip the Aleks. Textbook problems are useful.
Professor Leopold is a competent and knowledgable instructor. However, she does teach at such a high level that some students can't comprehend the material completely. She has great resources to prepare for the quizzes/final exam. I never used my textbook. Her quizzes are based heavily on her slides. ALEKS is helpful for reviewing the material.
Professor Leopold was definitely a gem of a teacher. Her lectures might get boring at times, but they were important to attend though not always necessary. Listen, dont do Aleks and dont do the book problems. All the information for the quizzes are on the lecture slide notes and practice tests. Know the ins and outs of them. Very reachable.
I enjoyed taking CHEM 1062 with Doreen. Her quizzes were fair and, although her lectures were a little dry, she presented all of the material that she expects you to know very clearly. I recommend doing ALEKS, even though it is optional for her course. She is a very kind and patient professor who respects her students, responds to email quickly.
Doreen is a pretty good professor. Although her lecturing can be confusing and awkward at times, the structure of her class (5 quizzes instead of big tests) is super convenient and shows that she cares about her students. Her quizzes are very reasonable just by understanding the lecture slides and doing some problems in the textbook.
Doreen is very very caring for her students, but her lecture is very very boring. each quiz is concentrated in one chapter, which makes it easy.
She's a super nice person but she's scatterbrained and her lectures are very hard to follow. would not recommend taking her because it makes learning the material much harder.
Quizzes are very fair and she doesn't relish trick questions like other professors in the department. Even though her lectures are dry, her expectations are clear and reasonable. 5 quiz set up is great - can drop lowest score or have the final exam count by half. She's not super exciting, but she does care a lot about students - I recommend her!
Had a really hard time with this class even though I did all the work and spent many hours studying for each test. Tests are unpredictable and questions are much harder than the practice problems given. She is a really nice person but I would not recommend her for this class.
Doreen while she is a nice lady, is a terrible teacher and tests are much harder than any sort of review material she puts out. Tests are all multiple choice and when the averages for each test are in the 40s and 50s, she seems to not care. Avoid her
Doreen is the SWEETEST woman ever. She really does care about your success in the class and wants everyone to succeed. Unfortunately, the tests are quite difficult. However, all the test material is covered in class, so I can't complain. The material is just hard. Your grade depends on your tests as there are 6 of them (including a final).
Yes, Doreen is a very nice lady but her tests are way harder than she intends. The structure of the exams being 13 multpile choice questions worth 5 points each is terrible. Not to mention that the averages on multiple tests were in the 50% range. The content isn't even very difficult the exams were an awful way of testing knowledge. Yes I'm salty.
Doreen is very sweet and willing to help, but she is VERY scatterbrained. You will ask her a question and she will just speak about chemistry facts that will not answer the question you have. Also her quiz set up is quite annoying as she picks small things test you on, this can be seen but her class average of 50%.
Professor Leopold is a very sweet lady and she loves helping students during office hours. However, her lectures are very dry and hard to follow. Your final grade is also made up solely on quizzes. The quizzes are very detailed and hard so make sure you know everything on the lecture slides. I did not pass the class because of the quiz difficulty.
Her tests are crazy hard, and even attending lectures and reading everything in the textbook will not save your grade. She is sweet, but it does not make up for her terrible teaching and scatterbrain lectures. All her materials are online, and she just reads off of her slides in class, so it's honestly just easier to teach yourself the criteria.
She's a nice person but I found her lectures to be so boring that I could not pay attention. The reason I passed was because there are study guides that are posted that outline pretty much exactly what is going to be on the test. There is no required homework in her class which is really nice, but that means that your grade is only taken from tests
Doreen is sweet and cares about her students a lot, which made me want to like her. However, her tests were extremely difficult. The questions are specific and conceptual, so having a good understanding of math and the formulas won't save you. Each question has 8 multiple choice answers. Doesn't help that they are the only graded items.
Chem 1061 was the fattest L Ive ever eaten in my life. However, Doreen fed it to me sweetly. She is a lively, fun professor who really loves chem and wants us to do our best. We were disadvantaged by corona, but she did her best to accommodate us to help with our success. Chem is still hard tho.
Chemistry is a hard topic to grasp but Doreen made it bearable. Such a sweet person, could never image her being mean to anyone. She gets off topic sometimes but she usually catches herself without going too far. Laughs at her own jokes lol Good class overall
Confused on any concept, she is there to help. class is slightly more challenging than the other chemistry classes, but she really helps her students.
She is a very nice lady and I like her as a person but her grading style is impossible. He test are only based on her slideshows but all the questions are multiple choices with 8 options. She does not give partial credit and there are only a few questions per test. Making the class nearly impossible to pass.
Doreen is a very sweet lady and is very passionate about chem, but her lectures were pretty much useless and very hard to follow, so you're better off teaching yourself. There are 6 quizzes that are made harder by her for literally no reason. She gives a manageable amount of ALEKS hw, and the class is reasonably curved.
This women is the saving grace of freshman chemistry. Was ready to give up on STEM almost completely after taking chem first semester, but Doreen is so sweet and helpful. Provides WAY more tools for success than any alternative teacher and has ample office hours if you need any help. Love love love her if you have to take 1062 take it with Doreen.
I'm literally only halfway through the semester and I feel like I'm going to fail her class. Her quiz average is like a 46%, and you're basically only graded on the quizzes and final. If you can put off CHEM 1061 and take it with another professor, please do that for your gpa's sake.
I struggle with chemistry at the UMN and hear that most chemistry professors are not great, however Dr. Leopold was a very kind and educational professor. My grade is not reflective of her lack of teaching but my lack of going to lecture lol.
Leopold is a nice professor, but she could improve how she teaches her class. Her lectures are basically useless and you have to teach everything to yourself. This class had a massive curve but that's just because everyone is doing awful. Her grading is 15% HW, 65% quizzes, and 20% final.
Leopold is a caring person, however, as a professor, she is horrendously bad at teaching. Attending lectures is useless, as she teaches confusingly & slowly, & slideshows have too much information for a lecture. Attendance not mandatory: it's better to self-study the slides on your own time. Quizzes are too specific; 8 answers per multiple-choice.
The workload for this course is reasonable, as well as the grading scale used. The exams are very representative of the material on the slides. The practice exams and review sheets are very close to what is on the actual exams. Going to lecture is not necessarily beneficial, because all the information presented is on the posted slides.
Doreen's class is very hard subject matter-wise, so attending lecture is a must. Problem sets weren't hard to complete, and they give many clues as to what's going to be on the midterms. She's very nice and awesome at answering questions.
I honestly really liked her. She is very understanding and caring. I emailed her about my failing grade, and she worked with me and come up with a plan to pass this class. After doing well on the final and the last three quizzes (as we agreed), she bumped up my grade! She recognizes circumstances and hard work.
Doreen is such a sweet person and you can tell she cares about her students. I feel that her lectures were hard to comprehend as she would go on tangents about topics that were not covered on exams or homework. I think the amount of homework given is very manageable. I think her lectures could be a little bit more clear.
I really liked Leopold. She is the sweetest person. Fair grading and minimal HW. She has all the materials posted on canvas for you to succeed including study guides, practice exams, & lecture videos, which were all very helpful for the quizzes. She may have not been the best in terms of lecturing, but you can do well taking this course with her.
Like every other rating says Doreen's a sweetheart. She kinda reminds me of Courage the Cowardly Dog in that her patheticness makes her endearing. She is very bad at lecturing. Even worse at answering questions. Watch the lecture vids instead of going in person. Take notes on everything because the exams are based on obscure conceptual questions.
Doreen was a very lovely person; however, she was terrible at giving lectures. There were a lot of "umms" and pauses when she talked, which could get annoying. The lecture videos are much more helpful than the actual lectures. Office hours are good sometimes, but don't count on them being helpful.
Doreen is a nice person, but her bumbling, timid personality makes class impossible to understand. She constantly veers off topic and digresses into vague monologues not related to the material in class. Her grading scale is also terrible, as there are only 4 quuizes throughout the semester, and together they are worth 64% of your grade.
Lectures aren't good, she's very quiet and not good at answering questions. Grading is pretty lenient. She is very kind and sweet, but just not a good lecturer.
She understands a lot about her material which sometimes leads to her going through slides way too fast in lecture. Overall, the exams are very applicable and oftentimes only need to be studied with the equation sheet, although the textbook definitely helps. She is very understanding and caring for students and she is just so cute! I love Doreen!
professor leopold seems like a nice person, however lectures are hard to get through. she doesn't answer questions and often veers into unrelated and random monologues. lecture slides are organized in a way that makes material confusing to understand. it was more beneficial to skip, and instead read the textbook and do practice work on my own time.
You can tell she cares a lot about her class and is super sweet. But the lectures can be very hard to understand as she knows the content so well that she sometimes flies through the slides and does not explain enough. Highly recommend taking notes on everything and going to most lectures. Very fair grader though and the hw is very manageable.
Professor Leopold's lectures do not make sense, and are often counterproductive to learning. She stated multiple times within class that she did not know how to teach a subject, and that we should learn it from the textbook. Her tests have 10 separate options for each multiple choice question which are all ways you can do the problem wrong.
1062 is a notorious weed-out class and designed to be difficult for no reason, but thats depts fault. Dr. Leopold is super nice and holds regular office hours in a class room to talk about class content or anything else, I just struggled with the exams because they're weighted so heavily and no curve
While her teaching style is not everyone's favorite, her lecture slides are very detailed and contain everything you need to know. Attendance was optional because she posts lecture videos on canvas. Keep up with your work and you can get an A.
As a lecturer, she is not the best. I literally stopped going to lecture after week 1 because she basically just read off the slides. If you can study on your own, I would recommend doing the same and just review the online textbook before midterms, and take notes on each chapter. The grading structure also sucks but that's a dept thing.
Doreen is a sweet professor but going to lecture isn't necessary as the tests and homework are your entire grade, and they can be done with just the slides she posts. It definitely saves a lot of time to just learn the content on your own especially if you get the 8 am class. Tests align with slides and study guides well.
Doreen is a great teacher, attendance isn't required as lecture videos are posted but go to class. You'll understand more. Do the homeworks before each exam and go over old exams and practice problems. Don't need to use the textbook at all. Homework can be turned in late up to a week. She curved class after the final and rounds grades.
I felt on edge the entire semester but everything turned out fine. The tests are multiple-choice and very difficult because they cover so much material. Doreen is so sweet, and you can tell she wants everyone to do well.
Leopold is a very kind professor who wants her students to do well, but her lecture slides are very wordy and the majority of the points came from tests. However, she provides a lot of resources to study for tests, and you can usually do pretty well on tests if you use them all. The study guides were close to the actual tests.
Lectures are very important for this course. Unfortunately, Leopold's not a very good lecturer (much too soft-spoken and flies through the slides), but she's clearly a kind person passionate about her work. Recorded lecture videos are a valuable resource. Take good notes to succeed on the tests that make up most of the grade.
Doreen cares about her students and encourages participation. Her lectures are not always the most put together, but has prerecorded lectures that you can look at that are much more helpful. She is very sweet and truly cares about what she is teaching. There is a lot of learning and homework to do outside of class, but it is manageable.
She's a super nice person. Great availability outside of class to discuss the course and any questions or concerns you might have. Her lectures can be a little boring and directionless at times, but if you take good notes, do the homework, and TAKE THE PRACTICE EXAMS, you should be just fine.
Prof. Doreen is very kind and approachable, but her lectures are so incredibly dry and uninteresting that they made this 8 am nearly unbearable towards the end of the semester. Luckily, she's very self-aware and posts identical video lectures, which were my preferred way of getting content towards the end of the semester.
Very kind and knowledgeable professor. Lectures are sometimes confusing, tests cover content directly mentioned in class, and extra credit is provided in lecture. Professor often speaks quietly so sitting towards front might be recommended. As long as you pay attention and finish the homeworks you should end up with a good grade.
The practice tests that she posts where the tests from the previous semester and she posted very clear study guides making what would be on the test very easy to know and do well on. She posts a ton of resources and definitely wants her students to do well.
Doreen is a wonderful lady, but she isn't the best lecturer. She tends to go off on these tangents that don't have much to do with the material we are learning. Your grade is greatly impacted by how well you perform on the four exams. You do have homework that you can complete to help your grade, but even then it isn't much. Wasn't my favorite.
She starts in chapter 5- if you don't remember your high school chem then I would not recommend this class.
attendance not mandatory and quite easy class. very worth it.
Knowledgeable in the material, but supe strict on her grading policies. I personally did not enjoy and would not take another class with her.
Took Fall 2023. For this class, Dr. Leopold was pretty flexible and understanding. Class time largely consisted of discussing readings, with light lecturing about chemical principles.
While I think she was a really sweet and caring person (plus extremely helpful anytime I showed up to office hours), she goes through lecture slides rather than writing things, which made her typically too fast to follow and I had to take pictures of the board before she switched slides. Also extremely difficult to study for.
Professor Leopold is great if not a little dry during lectures. Her speech itself is very quiet, even with the mics. I would sit towards the front. I had some testing issues, and she was more than happy to accommodate them, and is generally very interested in student's success.
Her lectures are dry and hard to follow. She will start by taking about something related to the unit then totally spiral off onto something else that is unrelated, and she forgets to finish what she was initially talking about. I was better off teaching myself using the recorded lectures and teaching myself the material.
Dr. Leopold is a very sweet lady, but taking her lecture at 9:00 am this semester was not fun. She tends to ramble about things that aren't pertaining to the actual lesson (usually a more complex idea). She is definitely willing to help though, go to her office hours! It's a pretty test heavy class as well.
She is a really sweet, caring lady. I do have to say that she speaks really low, so hearing her is really hard, even from the front row, making the class really dull. She compensates this by being really accessible outside of class, and she genuinely wants you to do well, so if you have an issue, don't hesitate to communicate it with her.
Doreen's lectures are dry and very difficult to follow. She makes little to no connection to what she is showing on the slides; this would not normally be a problem, however, she talks so quiet that you will miss half of the information she gives. This is a hard course with huge amounts of materials, but Doreen makes this course more difficult.
awesome teacher!!!
my fav teacher at umn
Doreen is a lovely lady; however, she isn't the best lecturer. She mainly reads off the slides, going off on boring tangents. Her tests are challenging, very conceptual, and take a LOT of studying. She's very communicative and genuinely cares for students, but the class is pretty hard. Definitely a weed-out class, take with caution, and dedication.
My goat i love her so much
Don't let this professor trick you into thinking that she'll teach you chemistry. You will teach yourself; hopefully, you have some background in chemistry, because that is what saved me throughout this semester. Her tests are all multiple-choice, but there are usually 8 choices. Not much homework, but you will have to study.
I found this class surprisingly manageable as somebody who hadn't taken Chemistry since sophomore year of high school. Do all the homework's and complete the provided practice exams 5+ times leading up to the test. Understand the lecture slides very well and the conceptual MC problems should be no issue. Plenty of resources available to succeed.
Class was very easy compared to what you'd expect from CSE Chem. Professor Leopold was funny and explained topics well, just sometimes difficult to hear during lecture if far from the front.
Genuinely so endearing and sweet -- wants you to succeed. I actually took the class Fall '24 and I had the Tues/Thurs 8:15; despite being so early, I went because she just put me in a good mood. Tests were pretty decent.
she is so sweet… i couldnt take the final because i had another final scheduled at that time… she brought me and the other students who had to take the makeup snacks while we took the exam!! GO TO HER LECTURES, DO NOT BE LIKE ME!!
She's very nice, sometimes rambles about stuff not relevant, but the syllabus is straightforward and she is especially helpful at office hours. I'd recommend going to lectures and sitting in front but also supplementing your learning with youtube videos since some of the stuff is a bit tough to understand.
She is so cute and really understands everything. I went to every single lecture which helped, but I zoned out for almost the entire time. I recommend reading the textbook to understand all the concepts and MEMORIZING the practice tests and the explanations for them. I did bad on the first two midterms and I was worried but she curved the class.
doing well in this class isnt too hard, but you have to teach yourself. i went to every lecture and didnt understand a thing until i looked over the slides and the textbook on my own. she is not good at lecturing unfortunately, and she speaks too quietly, but she is very sweet and understanding, which makes me feel bad for the low rating.
