I really appreciate her. She helped me through a rough patch and was supportive when I asked for help on homework and such. Very kind teacher that genuinely cares.
Homeworks and tests were hard but I feel like I learned a lot in class.
I liked her class and would definitely recommend taking her. Her examples were clear, and the in-class problems helped me practice. I had to think a lot in class, which is a good thing I guess.
She can be cheesy at times, but she wants her students to succeed. She is helpful if you come to her with questions.
Really easy/basically a review of high school chemistry. Still, she's a really good teacher and although she's pretty corny, at least she was always in a good mood.
Class is hard. She is a nice person but doesn't explain hard concepts well. She tried though. The ta was definitely mOre helpful.
This class was pretty basic chemistry concepts to prepare you for Chem 31. I would definitely recommend taking it if you're rusty on high school chem as 31 is pretty tough. Dr. Canelas is super nice. Her lectures aren't the best, but she will definitely put the effort into helping you. The recitations, while tedious, boost your grade alot.
Dr. Canelas is adorable! Even in her 8:45 classes, she's extremely high-energy and chatty. She makes an effort to keep your grades up and while a lot of the work is pretty mundane, it's still a great review for those who haven't had much chemistry in HS.
Strongly recommend taking Chem 20D if you did not take AP chem, chem 31L is very difficult. While the material is pretty basic it is very helpful before chem 31. Also, her tests can be difficult, so don't assume it will be an easy A; although an A is very manageable.
GREAT lecturer. Orgo is a hard subject but she definitely makes it fun to learn. So, energetic in class. Her tests are on the hard side but reasonable since the class is curved anyways. Strongly Recommend for orgo!
Dr. Canelas was great for Orgo II! She's a funny, engaging lecturer, and was obviously enthusiastic about the topic. Tests are hard, but that's expected for this class, and grading and curve were fair.
Dr. Canelas is a nice PERSON but not a great teacher. She goes on tangents about drug chemistry during class, which some would find funny, but it's actually annoying to listen to and very unhelpful in the scheme of things. Orgo1 was easy b/c I actually learned something in class. Taught myself 100% from the book in Orgo2..going to class didn't help
Very enthusiastic about the subject matter. Although very tangential, she genuinely wants you to succeed in the class. Relies on powerpoints during lectures, which can be annoying and unhelpful. But her recitation worksheets are great and often show up on exams.
Canelas is a great orgo teacher. She does a good job of explaining difficult concepts and she keeps class interesting with her lively personality. She made orgo enjoyable and painless to learn.
Dr. Canelas is really nice. Her lectures are effective and she is always making jokes to keep the room alive. She is also available outside of class. Read the chapters, look over recitation materials (post included), and put in the hours and you will get an A.
Wonderful teacher!!!! Made Orgo fun! Very fair/clear tests/amount of material expected to know. Harsh grading, but this is done mainly by T.A's. Doesn't try to trick you on tests. She is a great teacher, some people complain about her using powerpoints, but they are very helpful and she uses the blackboard to complement her powerpoints. She's great
I love Dr. Canelas. She does powerpoint lectures, is terrific at explaining concepts and really, really cares about her students. She's approachable and really funny. Taking Chem 20D is wonderful choice for someone who doesn't have a lot of chem background; taking this class will make chem 31 so much easier. Be aware this class will challenge you!
I was warned about taken Canelas's class but I was pleasantly surprised. Canelas cares a lot about her students and I learned a lot from her lectures. She has a great attitude about the class which offsets the intensity of a lot of the pre-meds. She was also really funny which kept the lectures interesting.
Canelas does everything that you would expect an orgo prof to do, and she does it well. She will not be one of those professors who will blow your mind away and absolutely inspire you. However, she will try her best to ensure that you comprehend the material. She seems like a really nice person and is welcoming and approachable.
Dr. Canelas is a good teacher on the whole. It is clear she enjoys teaching chemistry and her tests correspond to her lectures. She does well in pointing out what she will be requiring of each student before the test. Organic chemistry is generally time consuming but Dr. Canelas does well in highlighting the important ideas for the next semester.
She is humorous and approachable.
Great teacher! Funny, helpful, and approachable! Loved her class!
Canelas is funny in her own way and always available through email and outside class. She cares about you, although Chem 99 it is a 100+ student lecture. She gives lots of extra resources to study and understand the topic. Also, try to go to lecture (it really does help!)
Dr. Canelas is fantastic. Her lectures are clear (and worth attending!), she's helpful and very approachable, and her tests are relatively straightforward (i.e. over material covered in lecture.) I recommend her highly for Orgo 1!
She is so understanding and will help when you ask. Also, she is very responsive to email. She will provide you will tons of resources, which leaves her students personally responsible for their grade.
Canelas is a very clear lecturer. She writes really quickly but will pause for people to copy reactions down, etc. She moves quickly sometimes.
Canelas is the best possible professor for Orgo you could have. Incredibly clear, funny and witty, and is really interested in the subject. Her TA's grade kinda harshly, but she herself is wonderful. A+ 10/10 would recommend.
Canelas is a good lecturer, but she does go very fast, and tends to write down mechanisms that you don't need to know. Her tests can be tricky, but are straight forward. She is funny and easy to talk to.
Pay attention to what she actually teaches in lecture and do all her practice exams and you should be fine. She was a really fair teacher, and if you keep up with her, then you can definitely do well. I would highly recommend Dr. Canelas!
Canelas is a decent professor. She's funny and her lectures are interesting, but I found her rude/unhelpful outside of class. That being said, she gives resources and her tests/homework follow the material. Recitation is mandatory and helpful; lecture is beneficial. Book, her notes, and problems will help you on the exams, which are mostly math.
She gives you a lot of resources to help you with, and really wants you to do well in the class. Her class has a pre-set curve, and so she encourages you to work together with the other students in the class. I would highly recommend her for organic chemistry~she has a flipped classroom model, but it actually really works well.
I have to disagree with the other comment left for Dr C this semester. I've HATED the group work-- its fostered a lot of mis-education IMO, I wanted to learn from our prof, NOT my peers. I found myself trying to relearn concepts frequently. Did appreciate all the materials though. I bet she would be a great teach if SHE taught us.
Canelas was a great teacher. She kept lectures exciting and fun. The flipped classroom did work well for organic chemistry...just don't fall behind on reading the textbook and you'll get an A.
Canelas was a pretty easy professor compared to other professors, in my opinion. This year she had a flipped classroom setting in which we worked on worksheets in groups each class, which I originally didn't like because we didn't have any lectures. Overall though, her tests are straightforward and predictable.
All around good teacher. She makes complex topics very easy to understand
Organic chem is taught flipped classroom style. I took orgo in high school lecture style and the flipped classroom way is a much more efficient way to learn Organic. Intelligent people fail organic because you MUST do practice problems. She designed worksheets that simplify the material and she is extremely fair
Easiest class at Duke! Prof Canelas is very very eccentric but hilarious none the less. Two exams both multiple choice ad a final group presentation. Easier that rocks for jocks. Take to kill STS and NS requirements
Awesome
I had her for Chem 99D (intro to chemistry for those that didn't take it in high school). The class was pretty easy and she was very nice.
Dr. Canelas is a great professor! She is funny, engaging, and helpful in class - especially in the flipped classroom setting. If you find any way to take a class where she's teaching along - NOT with Hargove - highly recommended.
Good professor. The exams will be tough, as they contain questions that are "variations" on concepts that you learn. Lectures are helpful, but the textbook and practice problems (and practice exams) will be your best friends in this class. Also, she will call you out if you fall asleep, are talking, or are using your phone in class.
Dr. Canelas was a good professor. Her lectures were entertaining and she knew the material. There are plenty of resources for help in orgo but it is going to be a challenge. You definitely have to put the effort in to get an A but it's not as bad as it could be.
She was one of the best professors I've ever had at Duke. Her tests are difficult, but her lectures are very clear and she keeps her students engaged through funny anecdotes here and there. There is opportunity for extra points if you show up to lectures so be sure to make it - trust me, you will need them for your final grade boost!
I loved Canelas, she made class genuinely fun and interesting and during a few classes this semester I think I laughed more than I took notes! :) One place of improvement- I'll agree with a few other commentors that in person she can come as a bit rude, perhaps not rude but disinterested. Other than that I loved her class and highly recommend!
Canelas is a very fair professor and clear lecturer. While she might not be inspirational she understands students' difficulty when it comes to learning orgo and is willing to help you if you want. Orgo is not easy and very time-consuming but if you really understand the rationale behind mechanisms you will do great.
Dr. Canelas is a great professor and her tests are fairly straightforward. Go to lecture to get a couple extra points (very helpful in the end). I strongly recommend reading the textbook before class to better understand the material. Makes you work hard, but the class could be so much worse.
Dr. Canelas is really great. She's funny and very dynamic, always thinking of better ways to explain the material. The tests are difficult, but the class is manageable if you keep up with the readings and pay attention in lecture and recitation.
I really liked Professor Canales and admire her dedication to the teaching of chemistry. It can't be easy to teach Chemistry as a MOOC. I would love to know whether the Coursera course was considered a course for people who are not science majors. I hope not, as it was relatively rigorous.
Prof. Canelas is a clear and funny lecturer. She has a lot of anecdotes. Going to lecture will give you examples that are not in the slides, and will help your understanding 10x. Don't skip lecture or recitation, do most of the hw problems, and you'll do well. Definitely get a solutions manual. Tests are reasonable, watch out for trick questions.
Professor Canelas is probably one of the best Orgo 1 professors you can get at Duke. She's very clear and her grading policy is fair and doable. She made me really enjoy a subject that so many people dread.
Prof. Canelas is very funny and engaging, but the format of Chem 110 (flipped classroom, application-based) is difficult to work with. She does not explain the applications well in lectures, and they inevitably show up on the test. You must go to office hours to pass the midterms well. IRAT/TRAT are easy, midterm applications difficult.
This class is flipped, so it will be hard to excel if you don't already know the material pretty well. Applications in class are challenging, but doable. Try to come to lecture even though they aren't mandatory because Prof Canelas gives engaging and clear lectures and tells hilarious stories.
This class is flipped and focuses on applications, so you need to know most of the topics really well before hand. Definitely go to office hours when you can. Julia's are great if she is still a TA. Professor Canelas's lectures when she does lecture are great though and she is clearly passionate about her teaching.
Wasn't a fan of how the class was structured (this was the first time she's taught this class because the former teacher was on sabbatical so maybe that's why). Basically had to memorize how to do problems to do well on tests. She's pretty generous with the grading, seemed easier to get an A in 110 than 101. Pretty easy to get help too.
Flipped classroom structure, so success depends heavily on other people in your assigned group. A good team will help you learn a lot and succeed in the class. (A lot of test material is based off of in-class work.) Don't worry too much. Dr. Canelas lets you switch groups at the beginning of the semester if you feel necessary.
Dr. Canelas is a great professor. She really does care about her students. Participation was considered in the final grade, but it didn't impact it greatly. She explains everything very well and it was a fairly easy class.
She is so nice, and really cares about her students. She gives funny anecdotes and explains topics so well that I barely used the book in a class where the book is typically considered essential. Very approachable and willing to help. Definitely need to study, and participation is a sliver of your grade, but AMAZING teacher.
Dr. Canelas is an amazing professor who is really enthusiastic about course material and always cares about how her students are doing in the class. She is very approachable and lectures are very enjoyable. The class definitely requires work, but she makes the class enjoyable and the material interesting! Had her for two semesters and loved her!
While her lectures are good and informative, you won't do very well if you don't do a lot of self teaching. This class requires a LOT of work.
Dr. Canelas is a funny, engaging lecturer who makes concepts super easy to understand. That being said, it's still necessary to read the textbook and work tons of practice problems every day to fully grasp and master the material for exams. She gives you everything you need to succeed in the class -- oh, and lots of partial credit on exams, too.
Prof. Canelas is a pretty straightforward lecturer and grader. Her grading procedures are fair but the tests can be difficult. It's essential to do the reading and practice problems in a timely fashion if you want to succeed on the tests and final. She's not much of a help if you reach out outside of class though.
One of Duke's best professors; goes at a very, very fast pace but is kind, hilarious, and a great teacher. If you put in the work, you'll succeed.
Organic Chemistry is a tough subject, but Dr. Canelas' instructions make the course bearable. The class was definitely difficult but not impossible. You just have to be prepared to do a lot of work.
I loved Canelas! She was pretty funny in class and she taught pretty well. Her exams aren't too difficult and they were fair. She does give partial credit so put an answer for each question. She loves it when people participate in her class and she had us do clicker questions to gauge our understanding of the material.
Was not very helpful outside of class and would redirect me to different resources rather than attempt to explain the material. A lot of the important concepts on the tests were not covered in lectures, and the class required a lot of self-studying. Also, be prepared for two required 8:30 discussions each week (which are group work).
Definitely the easiest orgo professor at Duke. We played Jeopardy. Relatively little theory in lectures compared to the number of examples. Test questions were slight variants of lecture problems. TAKE HER IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA! She's pretty funny too.
Funny but WAYYYYY too easy. Wasn't prepared for orgo2. If this is your last orgo class, take her. If not, opt for someone harder.
Professor Canelas is a phenomenal lecturer. She is very funny and explains the concepts extremely well. Sometimes she'll waste too much time making jokes, but it does keep the class engaged. Her tests are very fair and a lot of the questions come from topics she talks about specifically in class, so I would strongly recommend going to lecture.
When it comes to actually teaching, don't hold your breath. Expect to go through tons of different resources by yourself and teach yourself the material. Prepare to discuss the material for one day and have homework due the next day and a quiz the following day. Ex: we were supposed to cover four topics & had barely gone over 1 by the end of class
I have taken Canelas for both 201 and 210. She is the best chemistry teacher I have had at Duke. Chem210 was difficult for me and I had to spend many hours working problems, but Canelas was always helpful after class and during office hours. Her lectures went fast but were clear and examples work were hard.
Great team-based course. Otherwise, it is a great course that applies previous knowledge about chemistry to a variety of scenarios. Additionally, Monday discussion lectures are always optional, but they are always helpful and entertaining. Canelas makes a point of making sure students have a good time. She tells great stories.
Her Chem110 class is technically flipped but every Monday lecture she did notes (which are always posted) and covered the material of the week. Had a quiz every week and did team based applications. Monday is optional but you must go Wednesday and Friday because you work in groups on problems. Shes a great prof and a funny, kind lady.
Although I heard she's a great orgo prof, her chem 110 class was the worst. Flipped classroom sucked. She was pretty lazy too, providing little help and letting TAs make ridiculously hard quizzes and midterms. Midterms are worth a lot, so don't mess up. 90% of your time in this class won't be learning; it will be doing stupid applications.
The flipped structure tended to be a polarizing subject- I loved it, others hated it. I think independent students with a strong chemistry background who enjoy working out problems will really enjoy the class. Due to the class structure, Canelas only lectures once a week. When she does lecture though, it's quite enjoyable- she's really hilarious!
Great professor, horrible class. Honestly the flipped classroom was terrible. You're expected to know random information that the TA's and the professor do not teach and they provide no textbook for supplemental help. When Dr. Canelas did lecture, which was rare, she was very personal and funny. If you have AP chem credit, just got to organic.
I have a hard time writing thisbecause I really do like Dr. Canalas. Shes fun and cares about her students. She just cant lecture. I learned very little from class, and unfortunately my discussion TA was often unhelpful. There was little corellation between the tests and lecture/hw. Take my adviceif you can take orgo do it. If not, take 101.
canelas is a really entertaining lecturer, but with the actual material she's kinda confusing in class. also go to discussion the FR on the midterms are based off discussion problems and the MC are off sapling. dropping the lowest midterm and replacing it with the final is great but the final is super hard so try to do well on all 3 midterms
She is a pretty awesome person and made lectures enjoyable with her humor. However, she isn't the best at actually teaching the topics and the only real way to do well is to self-teach and make sure you do practice problems. Most of my learning came from discussion and the Sapling. You have to do clicker questions for participation every class.
She's the laziest professor I've ever had; it's impossible to ask questions. It feels like you're voting on the right answer with clicker questions sometimes. Tests reflect class and she reuses past exam questions. If you do discussion problems, take the past exams and understand them, and attend the lecture right before the exam you'll be fine.
Prof. Canelas explains all things chemistry related very well. Overall, really nice person and funny! She can be a bit scattered at times, but if you ask her a question, she'll explain it in a way that's easy to understand. Class is flipped, so you have to make sure you know the material in the textbook and go through the powerpoints on your own.
She's hilarious and even though lecture is sometimes confusing because she adds some orgo to the units, it's a pretty doable class. Do well on the midterms (use discussions and old tests to prepare for FRQs) because they're 20% of your grade each and because the final is much harder than the midterms. Overall, you'll be alright as long as you study
She is a good professor, sometimes goes off on a t agent during her lectures. She is super funny and approachable outside class. Midterms are similar to discussion and previous test question. Study the discussion and past midterms. She adds orgo into many units which is slightly hard. Manageable class and kind of self-study.
Very fair exams. I taught myself most of the material because even though she went over it in class, it's not explained very clearly. However, her powerpoints are very helpful, and she gave lots of practice with discussion question and previous midterms. Do well on all three midterms because the final is pretty hard.
Prof Canelas is a great teacher. I had heard bad things before taking her class, but she is really good at explaining hard concepts. She also really cares about her students and how they feel about her class and tests. She's great
Her lectures are often plagued with tangents that leave the teaching to students. While these tangents are funny, one wonders why they even woke up for the lecture. The tests are thankfully based on the previous years' tests and discussion questions. Don't take this class unless you have an allergic reaction to CHEM 210 and need to skip it.
Canelas is probably the nicest person you can meet at Duke. She is always helpful when I come to office hours and advises me clearly on how to do well in class. But the crux of my rating is her lectures, which consists of tangents and unclear instruction. She says Yes, y'all know this" even if we don't, and BEWARE about half of 110 is Organic Chem
Chem courses are always tough/work heavy/hard tests, but for the first time (this is my 5th Chemistry class at Duke), I've actually enjoyed class. Canelas very obviously cares, goes on really short funny tangents and actually makes the chemistry make sense. She relates the material to real life things so that concepts stick/are interesting!
Might seem mediocre during lectures but she is a very interesting and helpful professor if you go to her office hours.
Dr. Canelas is one of the best chemistry profs for pre-med students. I actually enjoyed the content of 210 and she does a good job of identifying misconceptions with her clicker questions. She tries to be fair and her tests will actually be representative of the stuff you learn in class and discussion.
The best professor for Chem 210.
Canelas made the class very interesting and engaging. Tests were intense but fair. In summer there was a quiz or test every week. Class was online but I still think she knew who I was by the end of the term. She made helpful short organic videos on Sakai; these were better than Kahn Academy and others I found on Youtube.
Took CHEM 210 with her in Spring 2020. We used clickers daily in-person, so attendance was basically mandatory. Overall, solid course. She's very clear on her expectations, her tests are representative of the material & she goes on tangents sometimes but they're often quite funny. Optional final that replaces your lowest midterm. Would recommend
Dr. Canelas can go on tangents pretty easily in lecture. Sometimes it's hard to gauge what you need to know for exams especially since she is using Sapling now for her assessments. I really hate Sapling for tests but I quickly realized it's really important to understand the sapling homework problems in order to do well on the exams.
I had Dr. Canelas for Chem 99. For a course designed for students with little to no chemistry experience, her lectures are extremely fast and often more confusing than they are helpful. The only way to actually understand what is going on is to read the textbook closely. She is a nice person but tends to get distracted and go on tangents easily.
Dr. Canelas is a real gem of a professor. I feel like I learned so much from her class that will be useful for the MCAT later. Her lectures and grading are extremely clear. She is caring and makes going to class fun. Best prof you can take for Chem210. Also , the class is not unfairly curved (if anything the curve is in your favor usually).
Canelas has a great sense of humor and is high-energy, which helps with this class & makes learning more engaging. I took this class in Spring 2020 when the pandemic hit, so the tests were actually easier when we transitioned online. Overall she's a straightforward teacher & tests are fair; do as many practice problems as possible & you'll be good!
I had taken Orgo1 during the Spring semester and the professor (Baldwin) was horrific. I withdrew and decided to take the class during Summer Term 1 with Prof. Canelas. I went from withdrawing from the class with absolutely no understanding of the content to a B. She teaches with intent assuming we have little to no understanding. Fantastic!
Professor Canelas knows a lot about chemistry, but her lectures aren't the best as she tends to go off on tangents about random things. If you want to do well in the class, read the textbook and use the old exams she gives you on SAKAI to study.
She lectures a bit quickly, but presents material in a straightforward manner (& she's funny). Some work, but not at all excessive (one to three p-sets + discussion hw a week). Definitely manageable class. Read the txtbook, and do every prac test, you'll get an A. Decent experience overall. Only take if NO chem background at all (esp for pre med!!)
The material in this course is not too difficult. If you have a good work ethic, there is zero reason you shouldnt succeed in this course. Canelas is a great lecturer and gives you more than enough resources to succeed (past tests, slides, extra problems). Dont take if you have any chem background, you wont need it. If youre new to chem, take!
Canelas will go on tangents ALOT during lectures but I found that this made the lectures more interesting lol. You also really don't need to go to lecture days as long as you read the chapters and do the problems in the back of the book. For me personally, the lectures made the content way more confusing than it needed to be.
She's a cool person and very funny, but there is material for the exams (which are worth most of the grade) that she does not cover in class that you need to learn from the textbook. As long as you complete the in-class activities and work on plenty of practice problems, you should hopefully be all right.
Canelas is a great professor. She goes off on tangents in lectures, but that just makes the class fun & the lectures more interesting. An A is attainable for everyone if you work for it. There is no reason you shouldn't succeed as past tests, practice exams, & E.C. opportunities are made available. Do problems from the book and you will be fine.
Solid class for NS and STS credits. Tests are multiple choice and easy if you go to class. Generous on grading papers and group presentation.
Lectures are chaotic (esp at 8:30am when I had her) & slides are probably the worst in EXISTENCE. Tests are fair; she gives a lot of resources that prepare you (easier tests than Parise). Make sure you review old prac. exams, & she is a stickler for notation. Passive aggressive ab Qs & hardly gives you an answer. Not horrible, but not the best.
Worst professor, her lectures are not structured, she just reads off powerpoints She goes quick through her powerpoints and assumes that you understand. On our third midterm she downcurved the exam half the class for a mistake that she made. She made a question too hard on half the tests and penalized the other half by an instant 10 point deduction.
She teaches off of PowerPoints and goes to fast. Especially for an 8:30 class, her lectures were not the best. Tests are graded fairly.
Her tests were fairly easy, but her teaching style is not the best, strictly PowerPoints which are sporadic. If you self study you will be fine.
The tests were easier than other orgo professors. A lot of work outside of class, but no too bad. Lectures are fast and confusing at times but overall not too bad.
201 is a notoriously difficult course, but Professor Canelas brought a lot of energy and was extremely helpful, which helped a lot. You need to do a lot of recitation and practice to do well on the tests (which account for a lot of the grade), but you'll be fine if you can get into a rhythm.
I took Orgo, chem, and physics at the same time, and out of the three, Orgo was the easiest thanks to professor Canelas! She honestly does a good job at teaching, gives you a lot of resources to work on, and is super fun to talk to! She knows what she is doing and understands where the students come from. All you have to do is practice!
Best orgo professor at Duke. Great class, great slides, great explanations. Plenty of practice problems. Accessible OH. Take orgo with her
Dr. Canelas' orgo exams are definitely easier than the tests made by other professors. She has an amazing personality and is accessible outside of class. However, her lecturing style is very messy, and I honestly did not learn much from attending lectures. She gives lots of practice problems and resources, which is very helpful. Take orgo with her!
Professor Canelas was awesome!! She made class fun by adding in small jokes and advice, which were helpful for an 8:30 am. She was accessible outside of class and was caring about her students. Doing past midterms and reviewing discussion problems helps you prepare for 3 tests, which I thought were reasonable. The final was more difficult, however.
Really good lecturer, seems to truly enjoy teaching and made Orgo a good experience. Chaotic in a good way (drinks Bang at 8:30am) Ton of info to get through but she organizes the class well. Still lots of work and extremely difficult, but highly recommend!
The professor is amazing. She has a very sane approach. During the classes, she took great care of our mental health, she said not to worry about the grades. She explains difficult concepts in chemistry very well and judges fairly.
Canelas is a funny, involved professor who made orgo bearable. The exams weren't easy, but she provided practice through drill sets, practice exams, and homework assignments. Her lectures were a little all over the place, but she made 8:30 lectures enjoyable and even gave us real world applications for the concepts we learned. Take it with her!
I loved her. I had her for 201 and 202. Some people don't like how she lectures and find her kinda all over the place, but I never felt this way. She is genuinely so funny which makes class more enjoyable. It's evident that she cares about her students. You can tell that she wants you to do well.Tests were fair, but still a hard class bc it's orgo.
Had her for 202, tests are easy and she's funny. Sometimes gets disorganized and it's unclear what you actually need to know vs don't need to know. It's orgo, so you obviously need to do a lot of work outside of class.
Live, laugh, love Canelas
Her midterms were super reasonable. Her final was so so hard, but the curve was nice! I loved how she would tell us stories in the middle of lecture, it felt like a brain break for me. Take orgo with Canelas! Makes a terrible class into something almost manageable.
Dr. Canelas is a gem. I have never liked chemistry, but she made orgo manageable and honestly fun to learn. Has a great sense of humor and loves to tell stories mid-lecture. Her exams are extremely fair if you study hard. Taking a class with her again next semester because she is just that good. If you have to take orgo, take it with her.
She's fantastic! Canelas is a very good lecturer and keeps things at a good pace. Goes on tangents pretty often, but it's a nice funny break in class. Super difficult class but you know exactly what you're going to get -- what she says to expect on the test is what to expect. Really cares about students, offers lots of life tips ;)
Lectures were lowkey all over the place, but Prof. Canelas was super entertaining! The exams aren't too hard and don't have any surprises; the final was very tricky though. Prof. Canelas is down to earth and understands that school is hard. We even convinced her to not include certain topics on the final. Definetely take orgo with her!!
Very disorganized lecturer which is tough to overcome when learning such a complex topic. Discussions are virtually useless. However, Dr. Canelas is super nice and great at answering questions. Very accessible outside of class and really helpful but if you struggle a lot with orgo shes probably not the best prof
CHEM 99 with Canelas was amazing. She provides numerous practice exams that are very true to the actual exams given in class. Lecture was not mandatory, but I went to every lecture. Very light course load and you know what to expect. Sometimes, the questions were taken directly from our recitation worksheets and placed on the exams.
Dory's lectures are a hybrid of gen chem and stand-up comedy. Her exams are pretty fair. Going to discussions, doing Achieve, and the textbook problems are incredibly important to do well in her class. Love this woman so much, I wish I went to more of her lectures when i had the chance
Prof Canelas is actually such a sweet person but not so great of a professor. She constantly goes on tangents during class and doesn't explain anything very well. The whole discussion section of class is based on group worksheets, which gets annoying quickly. Just take Chem 101! Chem 99 counts for nothing and doesn't prepare you that much.
Dr. Canelas gives pretty much everything you need to do well on her exams which comes in very useful when studying. Do ALL the problems she gives in discussion/book problems bc sometimes exams are exactly the same questions. Her tangents get in the way of teaching at some points but overall keep the class interesting and enjoyable. Solid prof
Not the best for 210, had her for other chem classes and thought she did a better job then. Went on so many tangents that we were always behind and scrambling to get through info. But she's still a solidly good prof, sets reasonable (but difficult) expectations
She did a great job setting clear expectations. Lecture slides & notes were accessible online, and she provided many practice tests with keys & many practice problems. Didn't love the group-based learning, but her lectures were decent. Highly recommend for those with no prior chem experience - read the book, do the problems, and you'll be fine.
Really easy to understand her teaching and she is so funny. Loved this class.
Canelas is amazing at explaining some hard topics like redox and buffers in a way I can understand and remember. It was clutch for the MCAT.
Canelas' orgo class is tough, but her engaging teaching style and helpful nature make it manageable. The exams can be tricky, but studying with tools like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook will prep you well. Take this class - Canelas is a gem!
Canelas is funny. She helped fill gaps within my knowledge and I learned new things. She did mini experiments which was fun. You need to pick the right group for graded group discussions. My one complaint is Chem 99 class time should be an 30 min longer for questions & practice.
She is a good person, but definitely not a good lecturer. The lecture is extremely unclear, she keeps skipping content all the time but for the homework and discussion you are required to know the content that is not covered by her class. The instruction was extremely unclear. need to study by yourself.
I enjoyed Professor Canelas's fair grading and her exams were very similar to the past ones which made it easy to predict what I needed to know/the structure of exams. I will say, she doesn't go very in depth during lecture so you do need to do a lot of practice questions outside of class but that's expected for organic chemistry.
It felt like her priority was the organic class before us. Her gen chem class was very disorganized, and she often lost track of what material she taught us. She is a very tangential lecturer, which, although funny, is difficult to follow. Her exams were fair but a time crunch. I had to teach myself most all of the content to adequately prepare.
I thought the entire class was very fair, but her final was beyond difficult for me. The average was lower than any of our midterms. She still curved the class and is the professor I have learned the best with. You will need to teach some of it to yourself, but that is orgo and will happen with all professors. I will be taking orgo 2 with her.
I took organic with Canelas at the Marine Lab, from what I've heard, it was a bit easier than organic at Duke, mostly because of a few course policy changes. Tests could be a bit pressed for time. Very personable, tells great stories during class. Slides can be a bit bare, learned a lot on my own- but mostly because of my own learning style.
Good at teaching the rudimentary knowledge of each topic but that was it. Never left class feeling like I learned much. Office hours were at 2pm on weekdays so it was hard to get help.
It is genuinely insane how she has a 4/5 on rmp. She genuinely does not teach anything, and expects you to learn whole topics in a 50 minute discussion section. She always ends lectures without having gone over half of the slides, and never comes back to it. I genuinely don't know why she is still teaching.
Chem 202 with Professor Canelas was challenging for sure, but I learned so much! She Is well organized in Canvas and the lectures are clear and concise, covering the materials in an easy to understand way, which is good, because I needed the help.
Canelas is goated. Lectures are mostly intro to what you should be learning, so a lot of it is outside. However, the materials she gives to review for the tests are very helpful and align alot with the difficulty of the tests. Also, tests are 80% of the overall grade.
AWFUL. Rambles about son for 30/50 min lectures. Treats the 8:30 am class with disdain compared to 10 am (10 pt higher avg). Very disorganized + slides don't make sense. More put together in 10 am but still bad. Has switched from frq to mcq to standardize grading; however, this is heinous for students b/c each MCQ = 4 points. > 2 wrong = a B.
I LOVE DORIAN CANELAS. She's amazing. She's tough and lectures can get wild sometimes, so a lot of work has to be done outside of class. However, I feel like her exams are fair and she really does care about her students.
Canelas is one of the most entertaining big lecture-r's and very caring + enthusiastic for students and topics. take any class with her and you'll do great if you go to lecture. while exams are basically the only grades you will receive, she makes a big effort for practicing concepts in class
Professor Canelas is ok. She made many jokes and went on a bunch of tangents, but it was fine. Her lectures were an intro into what you need to learn on your own, but her tests weren't too difficult. However, the final is disproportionately harder than the rest of the tests, with confirmed material that Canelas js skipped. Hopefully a good curve...
Most disorganized professor I've ever had, lacks empathy, covers content for like 0.5 seconds in lecture, assigns homework ahead of teaching it in class which has caused many a crashout. Sure she's funny but in a very pick-me boomer way
Won't hold your hand, but she's very fair and cares about your success. Don't expect lectures to carry your understanding, but she outlined what we needed to know and made difficult concepts easily graspable. Easy midterms; aced by doing concentrated recall for three days before each exam. Difficult final though it is curved. Way easier than Orgo 1
I enjoyed taking this class so much more than Organic Chem 1. The midterms were all very doable and were based on topics covered in class. The final was hard but it was also curved. Prof Canelas as a person is very funny and kind. Would def recommend!
I'm surprised to see all of the good ratings. Her tests aren't that difficult but her average this semester was a C+ before the final. Everything I knew was because of outside sources and one on one tutoring (not from Canelas.) Honestly, she didn't teach anything and was very disorganized. But compared to other teachers here at Duke she's okay.
Organic chemistry is hard regardless of who teaches it. She knows this and tries to make the class doable. Midterms are really easy, which made the final seem harder than it actually was. She is very clear with what you need to know and it's all in the text book so class isn't necessary. Do the textbook problems and you will get an A.
A bit too disorganized.
