Prof Plantus is awesome. She is so chill. Very down to earth and reasonable. This may be a boring course but Prof. Plantus really entertains the class and makes you think outside the box. I suggest taking her. There are just quizzes for the readings and they are usually discussed in class. You will do great! Enjoy! I wish i could take her again!
Don't take this professor...
Had Plantus for EnG 100 last semester. Lots of participation required... Didn't love the class. Alot of work.
This class requires a lot of participation. It's worth 20% of your grade. I took this class in the summer. She is not very consistent. There is a lot of reading requires. Her exams requires a lot of thinking and it's every week. All of her quizzes/test are short in essay format. Take this class in the summer cause it's less work. She is great/nice.
Professor Plantus is an AMAZING professor! She has truly made literature come alive for me and re-lit the passion I had for being an English major. She will challenge your comprehension skills but it will change the way you read and the way you view the world! She's also quite entertaining. All in all I really enjoyed her teaching style
She was interesting but warning tonon-traditional students, she seems to lecture about life and sometimes less about the texts themselves. The lectures are not universal. They seem to apply more to younger stundents. Overall, I did enjoy her class and participation is important.
Attendance mandatory. Random assignments given. Poor choice of a couple texts which require more in depth analysis than a 100 level class requires. Doesn't go over syllabus and grading method therfore, you have no idea how your doing in the class. Multiple choice questions are worded onfusing d tricky so there frequently seems to be 2 right answers
Plantus makes the course hard. She's well intentioned, very nice, & passionate, but she's not very clear. Did not follow syllabus grading/assignment wise at all. Multiple choice exams were very difficult, but she seemed to grade essay based ones fairly. Attendance mandatory. Class discussion was always irrelevant. Avoid this professor if you can.
Terribly scatterbrained professor. I was really disappointed with this class. I loved the books, but the lectures were irrelevant and the exams impossibly hard. I would suggest the course, but NOT with this professor.
DO NOT TAKE her for eng 100. It was the most ridiculous class I've ever taken. She expects way too much for an 100 level. Take it with someone else!
The only reason I attend class is in the hopes of her taking attendance and giving me attendance points. Her lectures make no sense and she is very scatterbrained. Assignments are random and are never handed-back so your grade is a mystery, except for the online assignments.
One of the best professor I have ever taken. She is so funny and I always looked forward to going to class. One of my favorite classes taken, and I'm not even and English major or anything. I highly recommend taking her.
Great professor! I always looked forward to going to class.
It's overwhelming at first because the books are thick and some of the poetry takes some time to decipher BUT she does a great job at going over the material during class discussions. You will get a good grade if you READ! She offers many opportunities of RANDOM extra credit, take advantage of it! GO TO CLASS, a lot of what she says is on tests
She is a very funny and kind professor. Textbook use is HIGH! The exams can be a bit challenging if you miss class, all exams online though & you can use ur book. She does go off topic many times, so it can be hard to figure out what she is talking about half the time. U can tell she does enjoy what she teaches Take this class if u like a challenge
Go to class, ask questions, read and you should get a good grade. Her way of teaching is different but get used to it and you will learn to love her. Really great class! Would definitely take another class with this professor again sometime.
Do the reading, contribute to class discussions, and you'll get a good grade. She spends most of the class period lecturing at us about how bad our generation is at everything. She doesn't post anything online- no due dates, assignment descriptions, nothing. This makes it difficult, as she makes up all her assignments on the fly. Do not recommend.
She had our readings planned out for us and changed only if there were time restraints. Always responded to questions and gave feedback for rough draft papers! Sometimes her answers were confusing, but it wasn't bad. I got good grades on everything. Doing the readings is imperative,as well as reading her notes. She is a very nice professor.
Great professor! Lots of fun and learning to be had in every class! Always something new to be learned, and tons of wisdom to be gained from her teaching! She understands and appreciates the need for a good and intellectually humored approach to the world and all that is on, and in, and above, and beyond it!
I think Plantus is a great professor and super easy!
Her motto is to teach you how to think not what to think. Plantus is very energetic and fun. She tries to get everyone in on class discussions, and expects you to read the books. Overall great professor and I would recommend her to anyone taking ENG 111.
I LOVED Professor Plantus! Class participation is huge in her class, and I tend to me more shy, but she makes you feel very comfortable. She values everyone's opinions, even if she disagrees. She's very accommodating and understanding. Keeping up on the reading is very important, and you may feel overwhelmed but she's organized about the readings!
Th class and the readings are not difficult, she is difficult and very confusing. Even is you read "EVERYTHING" she gives you, you will still not do well on the quizzes and exams becauue she makes slight twists in her questions, purposely tricking you.
She is very fun to take a class with and keeps our discussions very interesting, however, she is unclear, never finishes her train of thought and leaves us hanging. Very confusing even if you do all the reading. Her questions are like trick questions. If you do all the reading it is still very hard because she is very unclear .
Absolutely brilliant, witty, enthusiastic, and intellectual professor. This is what college is about, educators who are passionate about what they are teaching. Her passion is remarkable and inspiring. I am a Health major and she almost swayed me in the Lit direction. people who did not like this course dont think outside the box. period.
She is a great professor and makes learning fun. We read books and discuss them in class then there is online activities and quizzes. Can be unorganized and scatter brained however.
Participation is key! Sit in the first couple rows, do your reading, and contribute to class discussion. She expects you to really think about what you're reading and what it means. If you genuinely make thoughtful comments about the readings in class, and pay attention, you should do great. She was one of my favorite professors at OU so far!
Very scatterbrained and unorganized. Never clear about what she wants and class is almost always a waste of time. She talks about nonsense for a majority of it. In order to pass in the participation part you have to be that really annoying and obnoxious student who always interrupts everybody. Exams are online but very unclear and vague.
She is awful. She is very judgmental and opinionated. She is also very scatterbrained. She graded my paper but put someone else's comments she had toward there paper on mine. I never got feedback from that paper. Once you make a mistake she wont forget it. She will grade you ten times harder.
I love this woman. She's eccentric and enthusiastic. And though I don't think multiple choice quizzes are the best format for an English class, she let me make some of that up with writing.
it's "the Bible as Literature", she's very thorough about the topics and loves speaking about it in a literary perspective. If you take it on-line, it'll be almost worthless. . . take it in person!!!! Listening to her lecture is like listening to the best story you've ever been told! One of my favorite OU classes ever!
Professor Plantus is a remarkable teacher! She does tend to trail off on tangents during her lectures, however she always brought them back around to the subject at hand, no matter how far away the tangent seemed! If you pay attention and contribute to discussion, you might even get awarded a nick-name!
Do NOT take this class! The amount of work is outrageous! She expects you to read at least 100 pages of the bible every week, as if we don't have other classes! AVOID HER & THIS CLASS!
You have to be ready to participate in her class. She will call you out. Exams are online so easy to get a good grade
She is amazing! Books we read for this class were sometimes confusing, but you will understand everything after you come to class and discuss it with her. She is clear, she know what she is doing. Tests are online. She is really fare in grading so I will recommend her to anyone who loves to read and who loves smart teachers.
Always show up or else she will point out that you were not there. Yes, exams and quizzes are online but they are SO HARD. Be ready to read. I think she forgets sometimes that students have a life and other classes outside of her own class.
Plantus was a sub when our first prof had to drop out. She made the class super fun and something better than it would have been originally. I actually LEARNED a lot in her class. She was flexible and had good points. She is also conservative and and has a fire in her personality, which is a nice change from the normal liberal professor.
Though there is A LOT of reading for her class, she is an amazing professor. I learned not only about literature but she gives so many life lessons. You'll take more inspirational messages from her class than anything else. Read and participate in discussion or she'll call you out and not give you points. She is awesome!
She is a great example of the fact that a professor can make or break a class. Even if the material was uninteresting or seemingly inapplicable, she made every class very enjoyable. We had interesting, fun, intense (sometimes heated) discussions EVERY week. Even though lectures can be long, I haven't enjoyed past lit classes as much as hers.
Best prof I have ever had. You take something from the class everyday, she wants you to learn something valuable everyday and she makes that happen. All tests are online and if you pay attention in class they aren't too bad. Would definitely recommend her even for a course you aren't interested in.
She's a very intellectual person, and frequently references other things in lectures besides the books being read. I respect her as a person, and even as a lecturer, but not as an exam-maker. The questions ranged from easy to near impossible. Some questions are mentioned once in a 2 hour lecture during the course of 4 class sessions. Choose wisely.
Gives very interesting lectures and leads lengthy discussions. Gives mountains of reading, but only gives quizzes on what is gone over in the lecture. Writes terribly worded and confusing questions, many of us in the class had to argue with her. Has a tendency to mix things up with grading, so watch your gradebook and be ready to email her.
You must read the assigned books or you will be lost and not able to get in class points. Great in class discussions that cover a range of topics pertaining to the books but, you can't skip class because specific material brought up in class will be on exam. Overall, very easy if you go to class and read.
There aren't enough characters allowed to fully describe her. She not only teaches you the material and "what to learn/think", she teaches you "how to learn/think". She knows that the success of our future is in our current students. You must read, but the books are not that bad and get better throughout the semester! Not hard at all! Trust me!
Professor Plantus teaches you how to think, not what to think. She is super smart and definitely one of the best professors I have had so far.
Very passionate prof. and her lectures are not bad, funny and can learn quite a few random things. Rarely opened the books (never read one completely) However if you don't read you will have to go to lectures or you wont pass. None of the answers were online. But i just listened to the lecture (discussion) and passed the class.
Dr. Plantus knows a lot about literature and is very insightful and thought provoking, when she stays on topic. She often goes off on rants and speaks in absolutes about things that she is not qualified to talk about. For example, she 100% believes that global warming is a myth. Only take her class if you can take what she says with a grain of salt
The BEST professor I have ever had. Simply a class act, treats every student with respect and fairness. The student determines the grade, not the professor. Teaches you to think things through rather than having others think for you. Take her, she's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is the most amazing professor I have ever had. Her lectures are interesting and quiz material is taken directly from the lectures. She will call you out if you don't read or act uninterested, but you cannot give a wrong answer in the class- she is very supportive and "protects her students." It's a lot of reading, but worth it
She's ridiculous about attendance and oral participation which is BS for an english class imo. Makes up random assignments that she'll require you to do. Exams and quizzes are online which is the ONLY good thing. Her lectures stray so far away from what you're reading you'll be confused as to what the hell she is talking about.
Doris is a really amazing and easy professor. She has an attendance requirement and wants you to read the book and participate, but I never read the book and skipped class very often and ended with a 3.8. She is very funny and the most interesting person I have ever met, i would recommend to anyone
Only reason to show up to class is for attendance. Nothing discussed in class will be on the test. Goes on about how important language is and how she teaches you how to think yet has multiple choice test with horrible grammar/spelling mistakes for a subjective subject. You'll think "Is the question wrong or did I completely misunderstand?" RUN!
Quizzes/vocab are easy points but are not a huge chunk of your grade(20%) Tests (60%)are very confusing and questions are contradicting. She makes the tests as hard as possible and wants to confuse you. Doesn't test you on the physical material you read, but the way she interprets it. Must participate in class because its 20% of your grade.
Very passionate but lectures are always off topic. Exams are ridiculous for a Gen Ed. Don't get me wrong, Im not against a challenge but the wording of exams make it impossible. They have hardly anything to do with the book, but you have to read to participate which is required for 20% of your grade. Easy pts for vocab but doesnt count for much
Hardest class I have ever taken. Freshman level English class should not be this difficult. Makes you interpret books exactly how the professor would, the answers are all opinions of hers, not the authors. Good luck.
I absolutely enjoy listening to how many things she knows about the world. Many people don't like her class because they are not willing to put in the work to REALLY think about something. Think big. I see the whining as to how participation is unfair; because they give the easy "right" answer, and I want to laugh. That's the point. To think more.
She is very passionate about the subject matter. She cares about each student and is very relaxed. Attendance isn't mandatory but she does love participation and its apart of the grade. She's very easy going and understanding and I would definitely recommend taking a course by her!
Plantus was an amazing professor. She really wants to get to know her students, asks about how we're doing, and understands if we are busy with other classes. Not many assignments, and she gives great input and feedback on papers without grading down.
A lovely lady. Professional, but fun! She truly cares about her students and her subjects she teaches. Participation does matter but not heavily graded on. But smile and be ready to answer some questions during class time.
One of the best teachers Ive ever had at Oakland University. Caring, smart, funny. I enjoyed going to class and attending lectures.
Professor Plantus is truly remarkable. I loved her class and hearing her opinions/thoughts about real world matters. I'd advise sitting near the front of the room if you want to get the most out of this class. Participation is important to her, so contribute during the discussion consistently throughout the semester- and she'll appreciate you!
I took her for an honor college class (US Constitution). Every day she either talked about issues related to the constitution/politics or had us bounce opinion/ideas off of one another. She is very smart, confident, and makes you think. The workload was extremely light. I usually enjoyed the conversations/lectures that took place.
This Professor actually lectures and she does it exceptionally well. She is a gem. There is a lot of reading and she is careful to answer any questions that you may have. This was a very good class and I would take it again!!!! Stay on top of your readings and you will be prepared to participate in class.
I cannot stress enough, do not take a class with Plantus. She is one of the most disrespectful professor's I have had. She says she gets reported every semester for saying things she shouldn't and I can see why. She tells you, your problems are not problems at all & she has experienced much worse. NEVER stays on topic, I leave the class so upset.
Do not take a class w/ Plantus. She is the most opinionated person I have ever met and if we don't agree w/ her opinion, we are wrong. She can never stay on topic, spends more time talking about her life & dog than she does teaching. Horrible reading content and she will literally make you feel depressed because she talks about terrible things.
I will never take a class with Plantus again. I will start w/ if you don't like speaking outloud, DO NOT take her class, 80% of your grade is participation. Next, if you have an opinion DO NOT take her class. She is the only one who is allowed to be right & if you don't agree, you're wrong. Finally, if you want to stay sane, DO NOT take her class!!
She grades participation, which I usually hate but the discussions in her class were engaging and left me with something to think about after class. She is very wise and gives a lot of advice. She's a pretty easy grader as long as she sees that you've tried and applied the things she taught in the lecture. She is one of my favorite professors.
Plantus is the worst professor I have ever had at OU. She is extremely disrespectful and makes inappropriate remarks in almost every class. She does not stay on topic and if you don't have the same opinion you are wrong. She singles out students that she does not like for no reason besides where they sit. I would not wish her on my worst enemy.
Professor Plantus is one of the best professors I have ever had. Her class is easy if you are willing to read and pay attention in class. I do not believe she is opinionated but goes by the interpretation of what the authors are trying to convey. She is super funny and kind to everyone. Participation does matter but she won't single anybody out.
Very opinionated, if you do not agree with something that she says, you will get a hard time.
Class was a reading class essentially, with the classroom meetings just discussion of the books. Plantus gifted my class with gems like how the disabled have it too easy these days because they can't get tough anymore and the final paper for the class was about if Nancy Pelocy took over the government and we had to save the country from her.
Dont take a class with professor Plantus, I promise youll regret it. She will ask your opinion only to tell you that youre wrong, she is the only one that can be right. She makes everybody participate in class and if someone doesnt respond to her, she will criticize them until they do. Shes honestly the most rude person Ive ever met.
Overall, Plantus was a decent professor. She was funny and caring in class, passionate about what she taught, and always willing to answer questions. My only things is her expectations and grading were really confusing. She never had clear guidelines for any project, and didn't answer questions clearly. Made the class sort of difficult.
Fall 2019 It was mainly reading and then writing papers about what you read (whatever about it you want) and the final project was a bit of research and creating a superhero. Class is lecture heavy, just discussing the reading &listening. Fair grade even if she disagrees. As long as you're okay with writing, it was the best class I've ever had :D
Participation is 80% of your grade but dont be the first to open conversation learn her opinion on the subject matter and continue that way. Exams were alright but if everyone in the class got one question wrong based on her wording she will NOT give points back will argue why shes right until blue in the face. Her way or the highway good luck!
Shes excellent! Such a great prof
She's one of those professors that only grades you b/c she's required to. If it was her way, we would just have discussions every week and that would be it all semester. Each class you discuss the readings. Few exams. Weekly quizzes for first 2 weeks then she'll decide to change it up. She was a lot of fun. Has cute goats.
She's so difficult, don't even try to disagree with her. After one student asked about quiz grades affecting their overall grade she said quote, "I just give you whatever grade I think you deserve in the end." Glad I stressed about quizzes, giving an effort just to potentially receive a random grade that doesn't match my grade on moodle. Kindly, no
Classall discussionboring/long. Expects participation (don't try disagreeing with her/seeing things differently than from her). No participationcalled out in front of classgrades affected. No structure, changes mind often, no clear grading. Many students had missing grades in moodle after she submitted final grades to reg. (& was not fixed).
She is a very kind and caring professor. She knows that talking all class will be super boring so she tries to get everyone to participate. Essays were super easy if you attended class. As long as you follow the guidelines to papers and answer the questions youll get an A, she is a very fair grader.
Professor Plantus is the most inspirational professor I have ever met. She makes sure her students are learning something that will be useful in each and every field. Although her classes are heavily based on reading and lecture, she makes mind-blowing points that will have you thinking for days. Highly recommend!
Prof Plantus was pretty entertaining. This course was history-focused and she was very passionate. She said a few controversial things, then she would stop herself and say "oh, I have to watch what I say because you guys are sensitive." The grading scale was not clear. If you don't agree with her, good luck. Just smile and wave, you'll be fine!
Best professor I've had at Oakland.
From an objective standpoint (ignoring that I don't like her personally), I think she's a bad teacher. She doesn't stay on topic and offers opinions on things she probably shouldn't be discussing at all, let alone in class. Personally, her attitude made me uncomfortable and she used the word "sensitive" way too much for me to respect her opinions.
Third class in and she was talking about "bondage" and Fifty Shades of Grey. Cannot stay focused and talks about stuff that has nothing to do with the subject for the entirety of lecture, so you will be solely responsibly for learning the material. Dropped.
AVOID AT ALL COST.All the other reviews about your opinion not worth a thing are true. The quizzes can literally have 3 right answers but she will pick one based on her "opinion". She will pull things from reading out of thin air and expect you to deeply analyze it like you are some stuck up professor majoring in English. Save your GPA and avoid her
Doris is a nice lady and probably a good professor but she does not work well with a completely online class. I don't want to be rude because I think her age has a lot to do with the problems but there were incoherent emails, information not clear at times, quiz questions that were subjective. Easy class though if you like to read.
Professor Plantus is the worst professor I have ever had. she assigns 60-100 pages of biblical text to read a week and has no empathy for students who struggle to grasp it all. she does not care about her students one bit and constantly puts you on the spot and expects constant participation.
One of the most fun I've had is in this class (unsolved historical mysteries). Many like to complain we don't learn "hard facts," but really the objective of the class is to open up your mind to views & perspectives you would never consider. We learn how to expand our curiosity of the world and question the truth. Great teacher, very knowledgable.
This class is a disaster. As of now, she hasn't posted a single module all week, and it's Saturday. She's done this before, but it was Wednesday at the latest. And when she did post, the due date was the same. Her quizzes don't follow the notes, and her notes, you have to answer and fill in yourself. Her quizzes don't always correlate.
Her notes and quizzes are very misleading. Most of her quizzes have keywords that could be right, but the ones without have the actual answer. She takes forever to post content to the modules, and she's always a week or so behind. Most of her notes are unorganized and ask you to look for the answer, so you won't know which she wants. And typos.
She does not follow a clear schedule, her syllabus only includes the reading schedule nothing about when quizzes are going to happen she lets you know very last minute I mean she told us on Friday that we had a quiz due by Sunday. She does not post on Monday when she should she posts at random days throughout the week with no warning.
What a whirlwind of a course. Not a clear posting schedule at all, syllabus incorrect/lacking information. Quizzes haven't really made sense at all /inaccurate. Pretty bummed my other literature class didn't transfer to OU so I could've just avoided this completely.
I'm kinda sad about the bad reviews. Plantus was an inspirational professor. Its easy to pass her classes if you actually want to earn your grade. Had a lot of freshmen in my class that didn't care to try and just complained. Go in to her class with an open mind and you'll be fine. Only critique is her assignments are very sporadic and last minute
I would have enjoyed this class if she weren't the prof. She made rude remarks. Notably, a student made a parallel between a character and depression, which took her on a tangent about how depression isn't an excuse, and people with autism didn't exist when she was younger; they just "popped up." She is an easy grader, though, if you participate.
