He's a very helpful and nice guy. He's energetic and goofy. Overall, an easier natural science class than most, but science wasn't my stronghold.
He is so nice. I realy appriciated his effort to make lectures intersting, like the coffee and snikers examles. He presents goegraphy in "none scientific" way, so everyone can understand.
Really great teacher! He is so nice and really funny! Really accomodating.
Dorn is an awesome professor, but his tests are mind boggling. All I can say. He is definately the most attractive instructor I've seen so far. I wonder if I sign this I'll get extra credit!
He is very clear on almost anything he puts on the table. He also does a good job with visual aides, CDs and DVDs. Highly recommended.
Awesome teacher, funny, interesting. Recommend him to anyone
Basically, i think Dorn is an amazin gperson and teacher. He has a great heart, great convictions, and just wants everyone to learn and love geography as much as he does.I had no interest in geography before his class, but i got a lot out of it. I am going to take his Canadian studies, too!
Great teacher, and hilarious.
What a great professor! He loves the subject and teaching and it really shows. I would highly recommend this class to anyone! His lectures are never boring and he is so cute with his little stories and comments before lecture starts.
wow, what a great class and instructor. he loves his subject and teaching. enthusiastic and bright. you probably won't skip this class...but won't like his midterm and final either. nevertheless a great teacher and individual, who makes the lecture hall a fine atmosphere
Anyone who shamelessly wears sweater vests with the alarming frequency as Van Dommelen does can't be bad. I had zero interest in this class, but I find myself boring my friends with factoids about the glacial formation of Anchorage, don't get me started on erratics. His field trip is not to be missed. It's a very bizarre experience to say the least
DORN IS GREAT!!! He is funny, has interesting subjects, very available to help students, friendly. I want to take more of his classes.
Funny guy, laid back, likes to discuss current issues.
Dorn was an awesome instructor. I initially took his class to fulfill my natural science credit and he just made science fun and interesting. I would highly recommend him to other students. Thanks dorn!
He's not only a great teacher, but he's really good looking. It made me want to go to class.
He made you want to show up to class and learn because of his love of the subject.
Great guy. Test are hard but very minimal work. Fun.
Dorn loves teaching this class! The tests are very hard, but the ongoing notebook assignment is fun to do. Make sure you read the textbook to stay on top of the lecture, and even though he is nice to watch, it is easy to get bored of physical landscapes and think about the weekend instead.
A nice guy, who is excited about his subject. Tests are quite difficult, and semester-long notebook project is fun but time consuming. No other assignments. Midterm, final, and notebook are only grades for class; attendance is a must to do well on the exams.
Very nice teacher but his tests are very hard.
Great professor!! if you take any geography classes look for him, he is awesome. he's really funny and very helpful. the workload is next to nothing. i definitely recommend him
He is a very nice teacher. Test is a kind of tough but you can get it. I highly recommnend his class.
If you attend lectures, fill out the study guide, and read the readings, the exams are not difficult. If you are someone who just wants to slide by, this class is not for you. You must be dedicated. The exams are essay type, which require students to think critically. Great prof!
Really great professor. Challenging, fair, and fun!
Good and enthusiastic teacher. Some quotes from his class. "I'm loosing it!" or "I'm having the worst week ever" He still manages to do a goos job.
Very Very easy class if you just do the work. Professor Van Dommelan was a teach instructor.
He is very intriguing and passionate about what he teaches. He's enthusiatic, fun, and very helpful. I had a great time in his class and even took GEOG 205 because he was very intellectual and he rubs that vibe off to his students which is awesome.
Good, clear and entertaining. He loves the job and shows enthusiasm in teaching. Very helpful and willing to explain over and over. Definitely recommended!
I took dorns 101 class and because i loved it so much I also took 205 even though i didn't need to! He is passionate about what he teaches, is funny and understanding. I would highly recommend him to anyone!
He was very helpful and fun to learn from. Very passionate about his work. Great teacher, easy class, but be careful if you dont have internet access, most homework is online!
Learning from this professor is what going to university is all about. He has a way of challenging your intellect and engaging your higher brain functions without you realizing it. A very passionate professor who changes lives by his teaching abilities. After taking his class I was ready to change my major. This is a must take professor and class!
Wow Dorn is so inspiring. I really feel as if I walked away knowing so much more about the world. Best teacher ever!
I took the course online and I really enjoyed it! The course has a lot of tedious work but nothing to challenging. Every part of the class is interesting I never found myself bored once. Dorn was very helpful and quick to answer e-mails. I thought this class was a lot of fun and I suggest it to anyone.
Great teacher, I had a couple small issues (with slightly vague assignment parameters and having normal class for 1 hour 40 mins on the day of the final) Aside from that though he is a passionate and very intelligent teacher. I do recommend him!
I took this course online, and I really enjoyed the class. The professor responded to any and all of my questions and concerns very quickly. He also graded assignments relatively quickly. I would recommend this class to anyone.
This professor is horrible. There was no course schedule and every assignment was vague. In class, his lectures are incredibly boring and he drones on about things he is interested in, not necessarily anything to do with the course. He is the only professor that teaches this class right now and he totally changed what the course should be about.
I've never had a professor that is more vague, his syllabus is a nightmare, and doesn't stick to it. In class he just goes on and on about totally unrelated topics. The service project is ridiculous, i'm a college student, spending money spreading word about an NGO is not what i had in mind. Avoid this class, it has NOTHING to do with geog.
Heads up: He is changing the class structure starting spr'13, so take that into account when reading older comments. This guy was great. He's funny, loves what he teaches, etc. Don't complain about him being boring, attendance is optional! Tests are easy if you've ever even browsed the text. Service project was not hard, but seemed pointless to me.
Not what I expected when I signed up. The homework is tedious, sometimes requiring Google Earth. Exams are short answer essays. Requires you to do some sort of group project involving an audience.
He is a very knowledgable professor, he uses powerpoints and there are no required texts. Great professor to take a geography class even if you're going to take it for GER credits.
Dorn was a great professor. He was clear, I knew what was expected of me in the class, and I now love geography. It is great that he does not use a textbook, as the course is way more fun this way. I learned a lot and want to work in an NGO thanks to this course.
Dorn is a great instructor. The lectures were very interesting and the service project really helped cement the information. The tests were never a surprise as we had always gone over everything on them thoroughly beforehand. He's really passionate about what he does and he inspired me to finish my international studies degree.
This class was different than what I expected but very interesting! Dorn is wildly passionate about what he teaches and I appreciated that. He's lenient, approachable, and definitely helpful. He provides all materials needed for this course (hence, no textbook required for this class, always a plus).
As long as you are able to access Blackboard, you will pass. However, his hilarious and insightful lectures are absolutely worth going to in GEOG101. Dorn is really dedicated into giving you information that you'll actually use, and making you think from different perspectives.
Dorn is an awesome Professor. He knows his stuff too! Lectures were sometimes a little long, but also interesting. He only gives 2 exams per semester but make sure you know what you are talking about. Every 2 weeks we would have these online Geography assignments but they help in the long run. Would take another class taught by Dorn in a heartbeat!
Dorn is a nice man who clearly cares about the subject and as a result made me care about it too. The course wasn't exactly what I anticipated and there was a LOT of assignments and writing, but it was manageable. I personally thought the Service Project wasn't very effective, however Dorn is reforming the project starting Spring 2015. No Textbook.
This class involved a fair amount of group work and discussion. Assignments were varied, but never unreasonable. Dorn has the kind of personality that makes class fun and helps engage you in the subject. He was also very willing to work with me when I had some unanticipated absences. Highly recommend!
honestly i thought i was walking into a geology class day one, i just took this to fulfill a credit requirement for me ME degree, he is very clear on what he expects, work is due the same day of the week, PLENTY of time is given for assignments and they are very easy. tests are cake, would take again. lecture is entertaining as well.
don't rely on the powerpoints to help you pass the tests; you should go to class and actually pay attention. he can be boring at times but is very straightforward with what he expects with each assignment.
Super nice teacher and is passionate about the topics looked at. Not a super easy course but not hard as long as you put in the work. Great class and a great prof.
Class was straightforward, lectures are important to attend, he posts lectures a week before a big test. He gives clear feedback and a lot of opportunity for correcting your work and gives office time to help you out with anything you need help with.
Dorn is passionate about his stuff and that clearly resonates in his lectures. Not your typical geography class with countries and what not but more philosophical in a sense. Lectures are quality, testing is very minimal (mid-term & final only), grading is spot on AND prompt, homework requires some work but he gives PLENTY of time for them.
If you can take Dorn's class, do! I'd say don't rush to get the book. It's not too homework heavy. You'll use ePortfolio for a semester long project but he has it broken up into little sections that makes it doable. There were only 2 or 3 exams that were all essay questions. Make sure you understand the diagrams he shows during class, they help.
He was by far my favorite professor that I have ever had. Although there is a lot of homework, all of it is extremely fascinating, in-depth, and not very hard once you figure out how to do it. He is passionate about what he teaches which makes it easy to follow along. Although classes are not mandatory, you won't pass if you don't show. No reading.
Took this class online and it contained the usual amount of work assumed in an online class. He provides lectures - if you listen to them they help you out a great amount on the quizzes! The final in the class is a portfolio that he walks you through step-by-step what he expects He's very understanding & a lenient grader as long as you communicate!
Very passionate teacher! I would not recommend taking this class unless you're actually interested. A lot of work but I feel like I definitely learned a lot from this course!
Mostly blackboard. Digitation portfolio project is built throughout the semester using interesting projects. Google Earth is used weekly. Lots of GIS elements. Dorn is very responsive and lets you know how you are doing in the class. This is the second time I have had him. He is very consistent.
Very interesting and knowledgeable guy. Super casual teaching style, always felt relaxed and comfortable in class. Extremely passionate and put an interesting twist on geography 101. Made me not regret having to take more GERs
His class is very lecture heavy although there are some in class activities. He is very passionate in the topics he talks about, and does not require a text book. You will need access to google earth to do some of his assignments.
He's an overall funny guy but he never prepares you for the social science thinking essay. Grading is a bit unfair. Class gets boring very easily because of the long lectures.
Dorn is the man. Period. I've taken GEOG 101 and 111 with him and will take more of needed or if I have the chance. Great teacher, wants to know that you understand the material but is a beyond fair grader and will give you the benefit of the doubt.
AWESOME PROFESSOR. He emails back fast, is easy to talk to, and keeps class interesting. Can't wait to take him again for a higher level. He has 2 biweekly assignments due every other Friday. Really nice. No textbook, just an interesting novel on geog. Not dry. Do the lectures online before class or you'll be lost. You can ask q's secretively too.
I took this as an online class. The lectures are extremely helpful, barely had to use the book. Not a ton of assignments, but you do still have to try. Semester long projects are a little difficult to navigate at first but he works with you and is helpful. Offers to raise grades at the end if you are close. Would take this professor again.
Dorn was a really awesome guy. I REALLY wasn't looking forward to taking another science class, but he made as good as it was going to get for me. He is VERY fast when responding to emails, which I really appreciated. He gives great feedback and is happy to answer questions. This class wasn't too difficult, just keep up with the little assigments!
I took Dorn last semester and took him this semester for an independent study. He is my favorite professor. He is easy to talk to and emails back very fast. If you need help all you have to do is ask. I'm taking his summer class and his fall class. I highly recommend Dorn for anyone who wants to take a social science class and learn cool stuff.
Highly recommend as an online class selection for your science GER. 12 assignments + 1 midterm + 1 final. Grades based on you demonstrating you have a solid understanding of the subject, rather than nitpicking details. One of the fastest graders I've ever seen at UAA. (typically 6-10 hours or less) Very responsive to emails and questions.
Professor Dorn was personable and really worked with you to make sure you understand the assignments and pass his class. I found the work interesting and would take a class of his again.
Professor Van Dommelen is an excellent teacher. His lectures are interesting and the assignments are very regularly scheduled and straightforward. He is very knowledgeable about his subject and is available to offer extra help if you need it.
Dorn is one of my favorite profs at UAA. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about the subject matter and is always willing to go the extra mile for students to help ensure they succeed. He grades SO fast, you are always confident in where your grade stands and he's extremely easy to get ahold of. Loved this class!
Van Dommelen puts a great emphasis on knowing terminology that you'll most likely never use in real life unless you are pursuing a career in geography. For a 100-level class, the concepts were completely appropriate, but the expectation to retain information that contained terminology that is not useful in every life was too great in my opinion.
I took Van for Envi A211 as well. He expects his students to know the book in and out. His expectations for Envi A111 are incredibly high, almost higher than his expectations for Envi A211. More time than you expect will be spent on his class.
Hes a practical thinker, so be ready to learn more than what the book is telling you. Hes very smart and sometimes assumes that everyone else is too (which isnt always bad), but I think it sometimes leads to miscommunication. He took off 15% of my grade on a paper for calling him Mr. instead of Dr., so be prepared for that. Hes a funny guy.
Professor Van Dommelen has engaging lectures and assignments, no pointless busywork. He's easy to reach outside of class via email or office hours. He expects students to really excel to get an excellent grade, but he grades fairly, not harshly and is always willing to help students if they ask for it. I had him for GEOG 375 and GEOG 111 online
Modules every 2 week. Each module takes about 30-45 mins of reading, 30 mins of a Google Earth presentation. And 30 minutes of youtube lectures but you can put the playback speed at x2. Straight forward. He is a strict grader but isn't going to deduct enough points to change your overall grade for a submission.
Assignments are a mystery to figure out. Then, you are still unsure what he wants you to do. I don't think it's possible to get an a on the quizzes because there is no way to prepare for them. Talking to a classmate and with them feeling the exact same way... I don't know how he has any good reviews.
Dorn was a nice guy to work with online. I think his class was hard for a 100 level course but it was doable. His assignments were hard but made you think. His midterm and final were very hard and proctored. He responds to emails quickly and was willing to go more in depth with questions on scoring. I liked him a lot and I didnt struggle in it.
Dorn is a real gem. I loved his class and he made me feel welcomed. I would defiantly take it again. Next time I would try asking more questions and speaking up more. I didnt even know what geography was when I started and he really helped me learn. Overall this class inspired me to pursue my dreams of being a cartographer.
I took Dorn's class in 2018 and write this now because this professor equipped me with writing, research, and analytical tools that I frequently use to this day. He has a lot of work to do, but it's very rewarding.
The material isn't difficult to learn but he states what he wants us to do for our weekly assignments and then every single time says something like "you should have added this or that". So, basically I was docked a few points every week for following exactly what he asked for and not being able to read his mind, when he wanted random facts added.
Dr. Van Dommelen is such a gem in the world of education. If the opportunity arises for you to take a class with him, I wholeheartedly recommend it. He embodies kindness, humor, an engaging teaching style, a profound commitment to the curriculum, a deep passion for the subject matter, and an unwavering dedication to his students.
Pretty funny dude! His class was amazing, very informational but not an overload. Make sure you come to class so you can get your participation points. If you miss one class, you will miss the points and not be able to make them up. His exams were easy, only 6 written questions. I would take another class with him if I could! Highly recommend.
He's very cool; he's always talking about the adventures he has skiing and orienteering with his friend Bryan. Attendance is not mandatory, but DO NOT SKIP CLASS. His lectures are very helpful, as he goes in-depth on what he wants you to do on the homework. Really funny guy.
Nice guy, yet he is a tough grader. Exams are not too bad yet he is UBER picky when it comes to grading. Wont ever give 100% on assignments. He is super into geography and knows a lot. If you're into that take his class. He also loves to tell stories about his adventures, that was fun since it made it more personal.
Dr. Van Dommelen was a great professor and ran a really engaging course. He's a tough grader, expects a lot from his students and won't easily give out 100's. Despite this he was funny, very knowledgable and made your trip to his class worth it.
