Very very hard to pay attention, hard to understand.
Between the lisp, references to Brittney Spears and the whole Barbie doll image, it is amazing that this woman got a Ph.D. Can't say 'crime', but pronounces it as 'crim'. Class is boring and most of the time it is canceled because her daughter is sick.
She is a good teacher. She is really nice. I think the lisp is something that can be over-looked. Class is boring, but just about any 100 level class is.
What an annoying personality. I was amazed at just how "mommyish" she was to the class, almost as though she just wanted to hug everybody with the stupid topics she was talking about. Her habit of a coke every morning was pretty disgusting too

Learned absolutely nothing from the class- she was always absent

The lisp! That's all I can concentrate on!! Well, and the fact that she's gone a lot or ends class early... fun sometimes, annoying the rest of the time. I'm spending my money to learn, not to sit around and wait for her!
Really nice lady, if you are looking for an easy teacher. I think having a teacher that is "overly nice" is better than having a jerk. I would recommend it.
What a waste of time, I didn't learn anything, and the movies suck
She should not be teaching. All she does is throw in a movie.
watched all of the videos in HIGH SCHOOL. i thought this was a college class?
Didn't learn anything and she's rather annoying. I was accused of plagerism for using words that must be outside her small "mommy" vocabulary....don't include large words, or your own depth of thought, she can't comprehend college students may be intelligent after all.

Easy teacher, pretty nice. If you just need a GDR, it's an easy one. Do a good job on the video reviews.
not bad make sure she does the power points with her lectures. Easy grade go and see her for your first video review to make sure you did it right. Cancels class a lot!!! :)
I took Criminology with her and I was really disappointed. I was very interested in the subject, but I didn't like her at all. The tests were really easy though. Her lectures didn't cover the text material all that well, so you're better off just reading on your own. Her family comes before her job so that's why she cancels class a lot.
REALLY EASY CLASS. My first semester I had a 2.3 GPA and I got an A in her class with out putting forward any effort. If she offers the once a week class take it because she always cuts class by atleast an hour.
If you want an easy GDR, this class is good to take. She grades tests on a curve and they are 50 multiple choice questions. I skipped lecture for 3 weeks and got an 80% on the test for those chapters, after an hour of studying. However, she is very boring and likes to whisper during lecture, which is why I never showed up to class.
If you actually enjoy the subject, dont bother with her. You will learn nothing and she is never there. Waste of time and money
Very sweet, helpful lady. Easy text, easy exams.
Nice woman, very helpful. Does test reviews before each exam. Good class.
hard to contact and meet with her for outside help, but overall a pretty easy teacher...and her notes are online..so it wasn't NECESSARY to go to class unless she made us go into groups and work (which gave us extra points)
101 An easy GDR class, but she is a professor that tends to drone on and on...she has an outline for each class that she posts in public folders and she basically reads from it for her lectures. Shows a video almost every class period. She takes attendance at class, so you're required to go. For tests, just read the book and you're golden.
Attend lecture, and don't expect her to answer many questions in the review session. Must read the book to pass this class.
An Impossible teacher. She says one thing and does another often. She throws in random pop-quizzes when she feels like there aren't enough people in the class, and she's a tough grader. You MUST read the book to get an acceptable grade.
I took soc 102 with a veteran professor before I took this. Believe me when I say this class is worse.Make sure you bring your gameboy.
This class was an absolute breeze. The tests are easy and she is very helpful if you have questions about anything. Just go to class, read the chapters, and study and this class is no problem
Very nice lady. Obvious she knows what she's talking about, but very disorganized and unclear about expectations and did not seem to put forth much of an effort in this summer course - just threw in a movie.
great professor, best gdr i ever had
The class was okay. She is kind of cold when she's one on one with a student. Informative material. Easy to do well.
terrible teacher! yeah she's easy but if you want to learn anything i would stay away from her. And you might as well read the book you will learn more and the tests are pretty much straight out of the book anyway. but i learned absolutley nothing in this class and it sucks because she is the only one that teaches it. Complete Waste of time.
1. She brings in the same guest speakers and shows the same movies for her Criminology class. Boring. Never teaches from the book. I am volunteering and journaling about it for her, doing my mid term for her, plus my other classes AND THEN I must teach myself the material as well? Wow! Take a pay cut! And work on that lisp.
Seems like a nice person, but she should be a guest speaker at best. She is SO unorganized that it makes being a student harder. She told us point blank that she NEVER gives all possible points on papers & complains if we dont put forth enough effort. Didn't learn anything from her, only what I read in the book-wouldve been cheaper to buy the book.
she is not helpful, cancels class and expects you to learn the material by yourself
Hardish class, her class is pretty simple, besides the fact that you have to do a video review, which isnt really hard, but if you lazy and dont do it, it will hurt you alot, also attendance is mandatory, she does attendence sometimes and it counts as points, tests are moderate, if you read the book and know all of the materials then youwilldogreat
watched alot of movies and do video reviews for two of those. i actually liked this class. if you do well on first three exams.....you don't have to take the final at the end of semester. i did very well so i didn't have to take the final.
She has tenure and she knows it, which is why she rarely lectures. she rarely lectures and when she does, it's only for 30 minutes tops. The majority of class consists of watching movies. The last unit, she didn't lecture about ANY of the exam content. She isn't very helpful. Requirements are clear though. This professor gets a D+
This woman is the worst professor i've ever encountered in college. The most she will lecture is 30 minutes and it covers a whole chapter. Most of class consists of watching movies. Not a good prof because she doesn't really teach the material. Doesn't do what she's paid to do. Avoid her!
She didn't give the student evaluations cause she knows how bad she is. She didn't lecture, only used the book and taught with movies. I am a senior at this university and she is by far the worst professor I have had.
She is by far the most worthless professor I have ever met. I just finished emailing the Sociology department chair about her. Like everyone else has said... she doesn't really lecture, she cancels class whenever she wants, if she is on time to class it's on the dot and not a second sooner and nothing but movies.
I actually liked Professor De Boer. She's not as terrible as everybody says, but she defintiley grades out of this world and completely un-fairly. Almost feels like she grades upon the mood she's in that day.
Don't take her class. You will feel hopeless.
She comes to class with a powerpoint she made twenty minutes before class, and it is always unclear. The class i easy, but don't let her bad teaching kill sociology for you.
Very disorganized, tries to be pleasant, but often snaps at slight annoyances(ie. a student asks her to repeat something). Can be condescending, but if you get on her good side right away, you're set for the rest of the semester. Easy A (as long as you don't tick her off), but you learn almost nothing.
Before this class I loved criminology. The way she teaches is like it is a review each week. She is not very prepared and takes weeks to respond to emails.
Juvenile delinquency made me a more intelligent, better person. She teaches you how organize your thoughts and arrange an argument like a scientist. Her classes focus on empirical evidence and are very straightforward. If you can't write an essay, take De Boer. It will be life-changing.
De Boer is an awful teacher. She repeats herself non stop and goes on annoying tangents. But that all is just my opinion. I have a high standard for college teachers. She is very condescending. I felt like she thought we were in preschool because she explained things so dumbed down. She is unclear and sometimes over clear about irrelevant things.
I loved class and appreciated her explanations, there was no confusion about expectations.I thought she was an excellent instructor and would take her agin. I never witness her being unkind or disrespectful. She actually was very helpful to me when I neede it.
She is absolutely great with first year seminar. Highly recommend. She is a great professor and she is always available to her students to help with in the classroom and out of the classroom problems. Great person and professor. If you need to take a first year seminar, I highly recommend hers!
She is very snappy when you ask her a question or to repeat something, her lecture slides look like a third grader made them (many punctuation and grammar errors), and she talks to her students like they're five.
She is a horrible professor! When people ask me who the worst prof is at this school, I automatically think of her. She is just so mean. I went to her office hour to talk about my paper and she yelled at me because I had not made an appointment. But when I asked to come back later, she yelled at me to not.(She doesn't require appointments for that)
She is very disorganized with her lectures. She also shows a lot of films in class without discussing the topics before hand. We didn't really cover everything on her power point slides. One good thing about her is that she gives a good amount of extra credit. Otherwise, don't take her if you don't have to. :/
great class
Only 1 real lecture per week. Other is a "hybrid" class which usually amounts to watching a 1 hr documentary and summarizing it. Exams are easy. Doesn't have a Criminal Justice background, even though she teaches Criminology, but says she has family on both sides of the law. Classes are still somewhat interesting.
Lecture wasn't interesting, brought sick kids to class. easy but so boring. Take Helena if you want to learn something.
She is one of my favorite professors. Just like other professors, if you give her respect, she will give you the same respect. She is hard to contact through email sometimes, but if you really need to see her just go to her office hours. Great professor.
Professor DeBoer is very sweet and will go out of her way to clarify or give you more information outside of class. Took her class my freshman year and I did not mind going to class every day, and she was very understanding when I needed to miss a few classes for personal reasons. Class films and material were interesting and not a bad work load.
Awful professor.
Has no clue how to lecture, often gets confuse (scatter brained) Makes assumptions that you already know course material. DOES NOT actually teach anything! She makes you volunteer 20 hours of service, which doesn't even relate to the course. EXTREMELY frustrating professor. Will AVOID at all costs! I did not learn a single thing in this course.
Cancelled class often - sometimes very last minute. Exams were confusing with errors. Does not check her emails even after she says she will. Loses work - SAVE EVERYTHING YOU DO. Indirectly pushes her values onto the class - someone actually complained about this.
Very boring class. Attendance is not mandatory seeing as she never fully goes over the slides in class, skips around a ton, and posts all of the slides on D2L. (Does throw in pop quizzes but tells you when usually) Very hard to listen to lecture. She also always does this fake laugh and says right?? all the time. It will drive you nuts.
There are not enough characters for me to explain how bad she is. She forgot that she had a class to teach, skips over half the powerpoint, exams are based on the textbook which she refuses to go over, laughs at inappropriate times. Her voice is annoying and she is quite rude. Also never responds to emails when needed. Takes forever to grade.
Go to class and you'll pass with an A. Tests are easy. Nice person and lectures are easy. Don't take that many notes, won't need them to pass tests. Lots of extra credit options in class. Drops one out of four exams so you don't need to take final if you don't want.
Great personality, seems genuinely kind. She is upbeat and energetic so it made coming to class a pleasure. Unfortunately it seems like she has a really busy life, very disorganized, would post things from her other classes on D2L by mistake and is not very responsive to emails. She also no-shows to class or forgets her office hour appointments.
Seems like a nice person and can have helpful moments, but overall not a good lecturer. Doesn't use the full class time but will not cover materials and/or push back exams. She laughs at inappropriate times and overall is unorganized. Slides and tests have errors that make them difficult to understand. Gives a ton of EC that helps out your grade.
I'm considering dropping my Crim. Justice minor because of how confusing Soc230 is. The material isn't even that bad, it's just the disorganization of De Boer that makes it unstainable. She doesn't make a new d2l class for every semester so there's notes on there from years ago, and I don't know what assignments are required. VERY CONFUSING
She gives really boring lectures but if you can get through them she is an easy A.
She is good at explaining the subject. Class can be a bit dull if you don't like soc. I liked her and her class a lot. She does have pop quizzes but you only need 4 and some are online. EC point for participation which can help in the end.
De Boer cares a lot about her students and gives extra credit opportunities throughout the semester, would definitely take her classes again.
Very manageable class load and was very helpful when you needed her insight. Watch the power point and read textbook to get an easy A in the class.
rude, invalidates students and is judgmental. coursework is confusing and disorganized, all videos
Don't bother trying to email her, she won't likely respond. Lectures are mostly videos from youtube. Quizes and papers are the majority of this online class , minimal tests.
Dr. De Boer made this class super interesting and informational with videos, infographics, and articles hand picked for each chapter. If you read her expectations and the syllabus, you should have 0 issue getting/maintaining an A. I have had her for 3 classes (Soc 230,330,368) and have done very well. Very interesting material and a good class!
Professor De Boer is nice and she makes SOC 101 an easy class to do well in. She provides a study guide and a Quizlet for each exam and if you do well on the first 3 exams, you don't need to take the final. She also only takes the top 4 quiz grades!
I had no issues with Professor DeBoer. She made online learning easy and simple, it was clear what we needed to do and she even gave us an extra credit opportunity. There was a decent amount of discussion posts in this class but they were easy points and you got to do your own research for most of them. She also created Quizlets for exams.
At first, I was driving 30mins since her class in point was full. She took matters into her own hands and talked to the right people to squeeze me into the point class. There are lots of extra credit opportunities and she makes sure we have options so we can fit papers into our schedule. I am excited for my future classes with her.
unprofessional and oftentimes just annoying
I really like her as a professor she is sweet and seems like she genuinely cares about her students. One thing I didn't like however was she said that attendance wasn't mandatory but then she started making in-class assignments that were super easy if you came to class but if you missed class you had to write a four page paper for a make up.
I enjoyed this class a lot and the professor is amazingly sweet. I enjoyed the content and material given. The exam were very easy when you actually studied!
This class was taught by youtube. Even though we had a hybrid class, she would show 20-30 minutes of videos each class despite having some days off for virtual days.
Professor De Boer is a very kind and understanding professor who tries to accommodate every student. She teaches well and gives great feedback on assignments and exams.
Online SOC330: she never had the Canvas page set up correctly. There was always some technical issue and she always gave half effort to fix it. She would occasionally post an inline lecture but she was just reading the slides. Her online lectures were also edited very poorly and she clearly did not put time and effort into the course.
She used alot of videos in class, even though the class was hybrid.
SOC 396- She provides a lot of information in the class but does not require much participation from students. She has the textbook online to save students money. She will meet with you outside of class is all around very supportive. Grades are based on attendance, a few discussion boards and 3 exams. I find her interesting & expectations clear.
Doesn't really provide any real feedback on papers or tests. Tests are all essay questions. Not too many tests but she can be a tough grader when it comes to tests.
Dr. De Boer is an amazing professor and super sweet! I actually decided to minor in sociology because of her :) The class is really easy to pass as long as you complete the discussions and there's honestly not that many. There's a class textbook, but you can pass without even opening it. As long as you know the vocab, you'll pass easily.
She was very caring. Very clear about grading and is very understanding. Offers many times for extra credit. Tests were multiple choice. Class is very easy as long as you take the practice quizzes on canvas and watch the assigned videos.
