Her instructions are not clear. Her idea of an essay is totally unrealistic. She's not concise and consistant with her work assignments. No one knows how she grades her papers. When someone asks her a question, she retorts a reply dripping with sarcasm. WATCH OUT!!

Her class is hard but helpful. I have always hated writing, and though I don't like it anymore than I did before, I am a much better writer. She also gives out a sheet that explains how she grades each essay. Her class is for those people willing to better their writing, not just pass a class.
I had her & thought she was about as bad as can be. She was unclear about assignments. She was always late to class & extremely unorganized in everyaspect. My grandmother is an English teacher & I have always done well in this area. She didn't like my natural writing capabilities & looked for any tiny excuse to give mark downs. Don't take her!!!
This prof is disorganized and unhelpful. Save yourselves and don't take her Humanities courses online. Unless of course your are a Hum. major and want to be graded as such. If you're taking it for a pre-req take it with someone else!!
I had the absolute WORST experience with her.SHe does NOT grade her assignments on time and does not add in the final assignments to add to the final grade.She is unclear, unhelpful and seems to give preferential treatment to anyone EXCEPT older students. I have never in all my years as a student had a teracher as bad as she is. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
This instructors online course is ridiculous, unorganized and her assignments are unclear. She only responds to e-mail's by the announcements page. This is the worst humanities course I've ever taken!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!! She is not very clear on explaining her expectations therefore the grade that you really feel you deserve for a paper will be very low. Didnt make the class interesting. Topics were boring and i overall did not enjoy this class.
I Took her byz-enl class online & it was VERY EASY. She gave 1-2 homework assignments a week & a test at the end of each chapter. The homework seemed easy, & the online tests were 80% of your grade. Sound scary? Its not because all the tests are multiple choice & you can take them as many times as you want during the few days she gives to do them.
mrs. macalla was very nice, funny, laidback, and her teaching methods keep you interested in what's going on.
Easy course. Lectures can get boring, but she is extremely nice. Her required paper is 1/2 the grade for the class, and she grades it tough, but the presentation and art project make up for it.
Wow. Very unclear with expectations. A bit disorientated it would seem. Stated things would be graded one way, but did it another. This caused a few to get 0's for a paper grade. (not me) When asked about it, she went on some incomprehenssible tyrate and stormed from the class. I can not fully explain how poor this professor is. WOW.
Pretty easy class, she lets you re-write papers, but she is VERY unclear with her assignments and often changes her mind. She acutally went MIA in my online class the weekend one of our big papers were due and forgot to post the link to sumbit the paper, it didnt end up being posted until after the due date.
She was VERY ruse to me for no reason. She is one of those hate you or loves you teachers. I even had to go to the dean then the provost to talk to her about her constant rudeness and the fact that she told me i failed 2 months after she supposably already failed me. The provost even said that she lied about me. She doesnt teach whats on her tests.
I had her for Com1. She is only partially there in the head. She doesn't seem very bright, and she neither knows how to properly read or write. She consistently refers to the book, which contains a PLETHORA of grammatical errors, and she doesn't notice them. She only gives useful lectures on something AFTER it has been turned in and graded.
I was up till 5am atleast once a week cause shes got atleast one paper and a draft due each week, but if your diligent you'll be fine. Doesn't require you to read any full books, she has a super easy fifty question final and only requires 1 four page research paper. Not warm and fuzzy, but she cares and helps you whenever she's in office. 8/10
She was an okay teacher. Luckily she liked me and gave me good grades. She can be nice but you'll know if she doesn't like you. I wouldn't recommend her and I would avoid taking her again. Whatever you do do not severely offend her or she will withdraw you from the class.
She was very helpful and I really enjoyed her being my professor I dont know what the other people are talking about I will defintely take her again.
I would not recommend this professor. She does not keep up with the grades and it takes her forever to get your work back.
She is somewhat of a space cadet. She MUST like you if you want to pass. Only take her class if you already know how to write a paper. She will not teach you anything. I passed by sucking up and pretending to care about the things she said.
Deff. would not reccomend this teacher! Takes forever to get grades back and is never clear on what needs to be done. You have to write essays on the most boring topics too. She grades super hard also. She also goes into detail of what she wants the day before your essay is due so you have to go back and change everything!
I do not recommend this teacher, she takes too long to grade your work and never gives you a good grade. you have to have a degree in english if you want to get an A.
I DO NOT recommend this teacher. She is very unclear in explaining what she wants in papers and then explains what she was looking for after we already get bad grades. I write with the same techniques as in AP papers, and in AP I get high grades in her class I get low grades.

I LIKE MRS MCCALLA. EVERYONE IS WRITING HARSH COMMENTS BUT SHES NOT ANY HARDER THAN ANY OTHER INSTRUCTOR. IF SHE WAS TOO EASY THEN HOW WOULD WE PASS OR GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL?
The best english teacher ever. My buddy Ceaser loved her class and would recommend her class to any future students.

I absolutely loved this professor. I had her for Humanities. She was very clear in what she wanted and how she wanted it. She got the class into the discussion- which btw was always fun. I passed the class with flying colors but was up alot of nights till 3 in the morning. Be ready to work for your grade, but this IS college.
Terrible English teacher!! DO NOT TAKE HER..I have always gotten A's in English until her class which I got a C! After you write your essays and turn them in..she decides she will tell you the instructions and how she wanted it! awful! awful!!
there really is no teaching going on. youre told to look up type of assngmnt thn look up mla frmat and write paper. 1/2 of the time class ends after 5 minutes and she shows favoritism to certain people. stay away if u can
This Professor was fair, helpful and I enjoyed her class. Yes, you have to write papers but it's an English class! I think perhaps those that complain just couldn't be bothered to either attend class or do the work. If you go in with the right attitude and actually do your work you will do just fine. Professor McCalla offered me helpful advice.
My guess is that those that have rated her well and say she is a good teacher are the FEW who were FAVORED! This class was RIDICULOUS! She should not be a teacher---I decided to take her, even though the ratings were bad & that was a huge mistake!! I tried my best and still got a C!! When I am an A student!!
She is very biased when it comes to certain students. If she doesn't like you she will give you bad grades. Her papers are very unclear and she seems to get angry easily. She says EXTREMELY rude things to people and doesn't seem to mind who she offends. I would NEVER recommend her.
She told us to write a paper and after we turned it in she gave it back to the whole class and said that wasn't what she wanted. I worked hard on that paper and so did the rest of the class. The classes average was a 55%. I am on the presidents list and am making all A's but she thought my work sucked. There is no way the whole classes work sucked.
It's mostly a discussion class, and I feel like we weren't prepared for any of the papers we had to write. Graded papers take forever to get back, and you have no idea what your actual grade is for the class as a whole-she doesn't keep up with them online at all. Enjoy the class, but a hard time with the essays due to lack of knowing what to do!
Teacher was unreliable. Seemed like she wanted us to known more background info than most of us actually did. One project was actually fun to do, but rest of the course was difficult and boring. Papers were graded ridiculously and her tests didn't always make sense. Would not recommend.
She is a great teacher but not very clear on assignment but is very easy on grading them so i don't see why everyone complain she is by far one of the great teachers i've had jsut look at how many rating she has compared to everyone else very few come close .....Great teacher it takes a while to get papers back but still she grades easy on them
I did not like this professor at all. No matter what I did she said my papers were never good enough. She told the whole class that the papers were terrible and she wasnt looking for what we wrote. She didnt really teach the class how to properly write the essays, she just told us to write them.
This is an amazing teacher, not only does she make her self available but she funny, humble, and human. I think she wants people to ask if they don't understand she is not going to explain how to write an essay; she WILL expalain how to develop ideas. She treats us just as we are adults! I loved her dicussions they made me think! :)corinne
Amazing teacher, enjoyed the class. Alot of work but it is college. Grades fairly, is funny, helpful, insightful, and intresting...wish i could take her for COM2.
Teacher is very nice. She grades easily. Could not get over that du-rag (whatever it's called) that she wears everyday though. Also, lectures were quite boring, and she doesn't give study guides for her exams, either.
Not very helpful, I would leave the class even more confused then when I went in. Does not stick to an agenda so it is always random. She is very understanding and is willing to help only if you actually have 1 on 1 time. She is very patient.She Tolerates a lot of excuses, this can be bad if you are trying to learn.
She's a nice lady, but like many english teachers I've had she has some writing "pet-peves" that she dwells on. She isn't usually very clear with her directions and if you don't interperet and follow her directions exactly she will grade very harshly. Also the final was completely on MLA citations which I thought was a bit tedius.
She is a nice lady but she is a very tough grader. I'm a very strong writer, but not in her class. I couldn't get an A on an essay to save my life. The final exam was all about MLA Citation which was not easy. I tried really hard to get all A's this semester in hopes to get into NYU but this class kind of crushed my confidence in getting accepted.
I had Ms. McCalla for Comp 1, she is a cool teacher. Although she’s a tough grader, Ms. McCalla took the time to explain all writing assignments and gave students the opportunity to resubmit new papers for better grades. She will accept late work, but will take off a letter grade for late assignments.
It upsets me that people are saying such negative things about Mrs. McCalla! She is a wonderful teacher. She clearly explains what is expected of her students & was even kind enough to let students resubmit work they failed. Yes, she is a little tougher on grading, but it's what pushed me to work harder on my essays & has made me a stronger writer.
The professor doesn't make anything clear. I've always been a strong writer, shoot even professor McCalla said I write an excellent draft, then when turn in my paper she gives me an 80. Not even an 85. Please save yourself time, effort, and your self confidence. Choose another teacher, hands down.
I am an A student... Just received a C! She doesn't prepare you for paper or final which is the majority of the grade so just when you think you are doing good... You barely pass. Not very pleasant to the class, extremely sarcastic. Would not recommend.
I don't recommend Mrs. McCalla to anyone. She is point blank rude and inconsiderate. She will tell you that you are a good writer, or that you did well on your draft and then on the final give you a D. She was very unpleasant and I dreaded attending her class.

Professor McCalla is a fair grader if one follows her directions carefully. There are three small essays (3-4 pages MLA format), an annotated bibliography and research essay (about 1000 words each), and a few low-point assignments between essays. It would be beneficial for one to submit essays to the writing lab before submitting to McCalla.
McCalla's class is tough but you will learn. She has high expectations and very specific grading criteria for assignments. This is not a class you can just breeze through but if you work really hard, you will become a better writer. Took online- she responds promptly to e-mails and is helpful if you just ask. I am glad I had her.

Mrs. McCalla is an excellent professor! She's fair, funny, and always provides feedback in effort to help her students. This class seemed overwhelming at first, but she was always willing to listen and help pass on her knowledge.
I have taken Professor McCalla for developmental writing 2, and now for comp 1. She has hours in the writing lab on top of her office hours to help you. If you do not try to do the work, and put in effort your effort will get you a A. Her grading is very steep though, I would suggest going into the writing lab for all papers.
Took this teacher for Study Abroad. Good experience in Europe, but would not take it again or anything with this teacher. She is disrespectful and dishonest and I felt uneasy while abroad. Didn't tip the tour guide like she was supposed to just because she didn't feel like it, so our class had to mail him the money he was actually due!
McCalla is the WORST POSSIBLE TEACHER EVER!!! McCalla does not prepare you for the weekly writing assignment. She does not actually lecture in class which I never liked about her. I dreaded going to her class she's not really too involved with her students. I would not recommend taking her for Humanities, I recommend taking a different professor!!
She expected you to read every word the chapters but when we reviewed it she chose certain things to review (waste of time.) I had her one night per week for 2 hrs & 40 mins and we covered material maybe 1 hour of it. 4 Classes were cancelled due to holidays and a hurricane and didnt cover all the material. We tested on 4 chapters we never covered
Grading style is based on her opinion exclusively. If you want to have your paper evaluated and fail without knowing why than this is the class for you. If you can contribute to this professor's lectures and gain her favor than you have a chance otherwise my condolences to your gpa.
She gives clear, understandable feedback and has a very clear grading rubric. She posts samples of the assignments for a guideline. She's flexible so you can miss 1-2 classes. She's very likeable and has an outgoing personality. She's book heavy so make sure you use it.
I had her unexpectedly so I have a little worried because of her rates. Honestly, she grades as it is. If you follow the instructions then youll be good. I advise being friends with someone whos good at writing, tbh. She give extra credits that are usually 1 or 2 points. Shes usually behind on grading papers so beware, cause I struggled.
One of the worst teachers I've had. Her grading is unrealistic. I've gotten an A on every paper since high school (I'm a senior in college) and she gave me a D on a paper that would have been at least a B, If she were grading very harsh. She gave me three minor notes and when confronting her she was a nightmare. Save your grade don't take her class
I thought I was a great writer until I got to her class. Every time I would revise based on her feedback, it would be worse. She has a way of talking to you and in the end of the conversation you feel like the stupid one. She even admits in her class how hard it is and how high her expectations are. We are a DE hs class....
McCalla was a great Com 1 teacher and I really enjoyed her class. She was really easy and didnt assign a lot of work.
Overall it was pretty hard to make an A on a paper in her class. Be sure to carefully read to essay requirements and always proofread. I was able to make an A in this class with a lot of hard work. Theres 2-4 page papers due every other week or so, and the final research essay which is 4-6 pages along with a annotated bibliography.
Really tough teacher for a class that is not supposed difficult. The instructions she gives are very unclear for her online classes. If you want her as a professor DO NOT take her online classes. Your GPA will be so low after taking this class with her. Just save yourself now.

I was a dual enrollment student and McCalla was such an understandable and flexible professor. She answered all my emails within a timely manner, graded fairly, allowed late submissions for essays only, and gave very few assignments. I maintained a high A throughout the whole semester and received a 90 or above on all essays. No complaints!
Mcalla is by far the worst professor ever!!!! She assigns more work then she can handle herself. We had a total of about 8 papers of a comp class. All required 3-6 pages. She assigned two 5 page papers and it took MONTHS for her to grade it as complete. This lady never gives feedback so you never know what you need to improve on. 100% DO NOT TAKE
The course is difficult, especially if you don't like writing. The professor is very understanding though. I turned a few assignments in late even though late work wasn't supposed to be excepted, and I still got full credit essentially just because I asked nicely. Instructions aren't super clear but she will help with most anything if you ask.
Avoid this teacher. Not organized. Does not give feedback in time to use. Her instructions are like she is yelling at you.
Most of the time we both were confused. I wouldn't have time to fix things before I had to submit the final assignment. My grade was too low and I wouldn't have had time to bring it up. I've never failed any class. I'm in the SAIL program and it felt like none of my accommodations were met. These issues gave me no choice but to drop the class.
The class is very heavy on writing assignment grades. If you mess those up in any way she won't mark points off, she will give you a 0, making your grade go down 3 letter grades. The proposal gets feedback on the day an essay is due, so if you've already written more than half the essay and you get negative feedback, too bad, you have to restart.

The teacher has a harsh attitude towards her students, she has no patience, she humiliates them and constantly threatens them.
Do not choose this professor for your humanities class. I barely passed with an A and had to jump through hoops to do so. Communication was poor, friendliness was nonexistent, and when you could finally get her to respond to emails, her responses were unnecessarily rude and sarcastic. If you do take her class, valid questions you have will bug her.
She says she is understanding but degrades everything. She picks class pets and the also is rude to people with mental disabilities and talk to students like they are stupid. McCalla is a really tough grader even if she sits with you for an assignment till you submit it you will still get points off. Good luck if you have her.
watched this professor make fun of a student for giving a helpful tip to the class and she was very mean to her students all year like I literally had to skip half the semester because this teacher gave me so much anxiety. do not ever take this class
I did not enjoy this class. There was a lot of miscommunication and she did not always answer her emails. She was also a bit rude to her students. Overall I would not recommend this teacher.
I personally liked her a lot. She wants the students to speak in class so there is sometimes awkward silence until someone speaks. We had some group discussions in class and one debate which was fun. There are 4 short essays taken in class but she gives you time to prepare for them and her instructions are clear. Final was copy of the study guide.

Not once have I ever failed a class but she failed me and gave me a 0% on my final project research assignment that could have easily been a passing grade. She is very rude, if you have a question she will talk to you as if you have no common sense. The list goes on. 0/10 do not take.
