Dorritta is an awesome TA who works hard bringing extra helpful material, but also fun material (songs, movie clips, etc. which all help to illustrate her point) She has high expectations, but, in return, she creates a great learning environment while keeping classes entertaining, engaging, and fun. P.S. Great help with papers, thesis development.
ewww. Dorritta is annoying and a poor teacher. She tries really hard to be cool and wacky, but is merely ridiculous. Seriously, grow up.
This teacher is god-awful. She makes no sense, her midterm is ridiculous, and her lectures are so dry and boring and have nothing to do with the books! The class never had real discussion on the novels; she does weird experiments that make no sense. I really was looking forward to this class and feel so ripped off. She was the replacement teacher.

She was a replacement teacher for my ENG1130 class..Her teaching style is probably not what most college students are used to...but she tries. She gives too many handouts of which most we don't even take a second look at, and the lectures never seem to go anywhere.

she has no idea what she is doing! but she tries. she talks so fast that nobody can understand her, she gives WAY to many hand-outs, her lectures are pointless and nobody learns anything. we spend the entire class playing games, and talking in groups about what we did on the weekend. for the class time being so slack she is a really hard marker!

Dorritta is a great teacher if you like to not learn and like to be confused. If you try to speak to her she freaks out. Suck up and you should do fine.
She speaks way too fast! She is very awkward and hard to takl to. The lectures make no sence and she is easily confused and goes off track, she has given incorrect info many times. I would not reccomend her I dont know how she is even teaching.
She is the worst professor I've had at Douglas College, please don't take a class with her, you WILL regret it! I worked really hard in that class and I've got nothing at all to show for it, she talks way too fast! Clearly thinks a lot of herself yet she's not very smart.
Horrible! I have never been so disgusted with a teacher before. She did not know her materials, nor the background of the novels. Stay away from this one, she seriously is a waste of your time...
She needs to keep her biases out of the classroom as her readings and film clips will only present one side of any given issue. Don't argue with this, as she gives higher marks when you agree with her opinions (even if you don't fulfill all the assignment criteria). Agree with her political views, and it will be reflected in your marks.
never taught us essay development, sentence structures, what 2 look for in aparagraph, nthng. She literally only looks 4 her own opinions in your work! We do unmarked group activities in class that only purpose is 2 teach us critical thinking. Ithink critically in my daydreams. Warning: midterm has no marking sheet attached ? just a letter grade
By fay the worst teacher I have ever had. She talks about topics like consumerism and we do reading responses on them and we barely handed in any essays. She likes students that only agree with her. THIS CLASS WAS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. DO NOT TAKE HER AS A TEACHER, YOU WILL REGRET IT!
i like dorritta...but she's a horrible teacher. she cares a lot but seems to be unable to help...which defeats the purpose. her thesis statements were longer than an average introductory paragraph..i hear patricia matson is really good. take her.
Her expectations are not realistic. The amount of work required for ungraded material is despicable. Her ability to maintain the group dynamics within a classroom are poor and she allows a few people to dominate a lecture or conversation. Asking for a doctors note for missing one class when we are all adults is foolish and controlling.
This teacher is something else. We just talk about pop culture and gender issues. No lessons on writing or improving essays. I would strongly recommend staying away from her classes. She treats students like they're in high school. Complete waste of money and time!
this teacher is not that hard if you keep up with the class readings. But she talks really fast and its kind of a loony she took pictures of everyone in the class on the first day so she could remember our names ! and she treats you like your in high school before class she makes sure you cell phone is off and not in your pocket .. weird teacher!
She's an okay teacher but make sure you attend her classes or you will get penalized. Found it rather odd she took pictures of us on the first day of class with a professional camera. Hard to get a good grade in her class. She is a nice teacher though and although you won't learn a-lot in her class it is entertaining to watch videos in class.
You can tell she cares about her students, but it gets lost somewhere along the way. The essays you read are REALLY great and she tries to add fun elements like movie clips and class discussions. The amount of work you have to do that goes uncredited for is ridiculous though and her marking is very intense (this is coming from an A english student)
Nice instructor and very helpful. Her strengths are her clarity and her intensity. She needs to spend more time on teaching writing skills in class and less time talking about the readings. This is my 2nd time takign 1130 and my first tiem they taught the writign stuff (i just did not listen) she does not really tech writing
Dorritta is politically incorrect which is distressing if you go into her (Gender Studies) class knowing ANYTHING at all about feminism. She didn't focus on technical aspects of writing and didn't take class comments and correct them, just wrote them down mindlessly. She's a stickler for attendance but there was little else that motivated me to go.
Speaks too fast. Very unreasonable and confusing. She wanted a summary with quotations and citations included. The summary must be no more than 250 words. The article was five pages long and in fine print. You fail if you go over the word count. I dunno about you guys but I found it difficult to write a comprehensible summary without going over the word limit.
I think Doritta is a very fair marker and she has a lot of fun class activities. If she sees you putting in the effort she will give you the mark you deserve. Speaks quickly but clearly. In the first day of class she did let us know that the average grade for this class is a C. She has high expectations, but I found her to be a fair marker. Strict about cellphone use and attendance. Helpful and cares about her students.
She is a nice instrustor, but her marking is too hard. You really need to speak up in the class because there are lots of dicussions. You also need to read the novels before the class, so that you will get lost easily. I won't take her class again becasue she is such a hard-marker!!
She is very clear in what she wants and expects in class behavior and assignments. She is very strict with her rules to the point where it becomes an obsession and a disservice to the class. The course material is stagnant and increasingly repetitive as the semester proceeds. She will encourage individual ideas only if they coincide with hers.

Her class is repetitive when it comes to the books that you read. She is helpful if you ask her what you don't understand. I took her gender studies class and managed to get a B- while missing a few classes and I'm no English major. Go to class and do the work. Ask questions and you'll do better than ok.
Very tough marker. Tries hard to make class discussions but if your ideas or points are not the same as hers she does not really consider them. Would not take any class with this prof again. Was looking forward to it and it ended up being my most dreaded class.
Hard marker. Lots of reading. Seems to always try to look for anything and everything wrong with your work. Doesn't explain herself well enough and just reads out from handouts. If you don't understand, she'll go the long route and give examples instead of explanations to make you understand.
Dorrita is a nice person but a terrible teacher. Her discussions are pointless, doesn't actually teach you how to write proper essays or thesis statements, if you don't have the same opinion as her she will ignore you. Insane marker and stupid with cellphone rules. We are adults not 11 year olds. We are also students not scholarly writers.

lectures at a grade 8 level, but then a very hard marker and unclear of expectations. doesn't provide help when approached in or outside of class. lots of printing. very confusing. bias and gender stereotypes against males ( I'm a female). very stuck on her own opinion. her way or highway. more than half dropped the course.
Be ready 3 weeks to get a 150 word summary back. Slowest marker on earth. You dont get any feedback back until after the midterm

Took English 1130 during my first semester. She is very intelligent, but forgets that her students are not as smart. She talks fast and a lot. Put effort into homework, prepare for the midterm and the finals. She gives several tests and if you are not a hard working type, you are better off taking English 1130 with someone else. I learned a lot.
Dorrita is really nice but really hard to communicate with. She marks very hard does not give good feedback on how to improve your grade. My class was full of intelligent students and the highest grade given out was a B and there was only one. Lectures aren't bad and the content is interesting. Just wish she had better feedback.
Dont take this class, if you think you're good at english she'll ruin that thought. Marks are given out so late with no feedback and usually the class average is 65%. honestly just save your gpa but leaving this class for the NEVER taking.
Hardest marker on the planet. She is super nice but expects students to have fantastic writing but doesn't teach us how to write.
Her lectures were unclear at best. She used a lot of printouts. One good thing was that she had the reading material accessible. Started off the semester with a full class, ended with only 9 students. Save yourself the pain.

I learned a lot from this prof. I did have to work super hard in this class, she's a tough marker. But she's super smart and gives hilarious examples in class. But she talks too fast, you have to get used to that.

Impossible to pass her course
I saw all the horrible review about this teacher but I decided to give her a chance, worst mistake ever. DO NOT take her if you care about your GPA one bit. She talks way too fast, she expects you to write as a fourth year in a first year class. She started with a lot of students and ended with a handful. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Interesting personality. I like her as a person, not as an instructor. Shes gonna scare all the freshmans!!! I recommend the high schoolers to take AP English 12 to skip this mumbo jumbo. Or take a male instructor, they are easier to tolerate ngl lol

this teacher is absolutely the worst teacher ever, Doritta is absolutely the worst English teacher I ever had she is two face when you talk to her she is supper supportive but she has no heart when it comes to grading. She will give you a zero if you don't cite things properly I worked my butt off for this class and she didn't bother to help.

Took her class bc it was the only one available well, no wonder why. A long 3h lecture that doesn't really teach you anything about writing. Basically you learn how to write reading the material book. There's about 2-3 reading per week that is min of 8pg. I was actually looking forward to this class the most because I love writing but not with her.
I cant even describe how horrible of a professor she is. She called a handful students in for suspected plagiarism with no proof to back up her statements. Got 0 on her assignment worth 20% because of citation issues. Got a letter from the dean. Horrible. She will only scar your transcript. Avoid
Ridiculously difficult marker. She does not cover the material at a level anywhere near what she marks at. Expect your GPA to drop. I worked super hard for my B+, and I have a 4.0. I've always gotten an A in any English class I've taken and was shocked to not even make an A- with the amount of work and thought I put into my writing.

Refuses to properly explain material when student clearly confused after reading instructions several times. She is completely unhelpful and I would not recommend her to any students who struggle with English.

Absolutely wouldn't recommend it. Reading fiction has nothing to do with gender studies, what a wonderful surprise. You have to purchase several novels to pass. Lastly, this course is heavily social, with loads of group discussions, so by all means take it if you are an extrovert and into that sorta stuff.
Just trust all the horrible reviews about this terrible professor. Extremely hard maker, she feels pleasure in giving you the lowest grades possible as she requires you to write as a fifth-year-old in a first-year class while she does not teach you how to write in not even one single class. She will make you hate literature.
I dropped her course seemed way too strict for a 1st year course. She requires attendance and penalizes you 3% (of your final grade)/missed class and .5%/late. As well as having to purchase >$80 worth of books (3 novels, 1 textbook, 1 short story collection). Finally there are three essays 1/month. Quizzes throughout and Discussion boards as well.
lot of bad reviews are rooted in sexism imo. she gives feedback, peer review, outline assignments to make sure you can succeed assignment criteria often over 6 pages long w/ examples, but unclear/over-specific total of 3 in-class hours on mock trial group assignment worth 5% feminist class focused on gender roles. REALLY basic fem concepts
Be prepared to read a lot and consider buying a 3 inch binder to store all your work. Definitely high class hours to homework time ratio (3hours of class time/week). Good meaningful discussions during class, which didn't really help with any other work done for class, basically going off on a tangent at times.
The WORST teacher I have ever had. Professor has no common sense and is completely unreasonable with expectations, grading and gives homework that is probably the size of you taking another course. The amount of people that dropped out of her course go to show just how awful she is as a professor. DO NOT TAKE.

While she is nice. She does not give a clear criteria for example she did not tell us that we were not required to put a work cited reference at the midterm. I had already memorized all the rules with the brothers. So, i Could have spent the time studying the actual sheet. She also does not answer email questions or reads them so get a tutour

terrible feedback (in English a rubric is not good enough and not even peer reviews in the college will help), more discussions on what we are talking about then how to write a proper paragraph, biased when grading essay, strict makes adults not use phones during BREAK, passive aggressive, only way to pass is making a zoom call and lots of reading.
Dorrita is a tough prof, however this class really made an impact on my academic performance and drive. Prepare to read a lot, about 3 long articles a week. She is a hard marker but will meet with you to discuss your grades and areas for improvement. I highly recommend her but if you are looking to do the bare minimum, this is not the prof for you

I did great but two of my friends failed the class and they studied hard. Yes, take another professor.
If you value your mental health and your love for your studies, I highly recommend steering clear of Dorrita's classes. Her approach to teaching is less about fostering a love for English and more about imposing her own brand of academic tyranny.
If Douglas values the well-being and success of its students, it should seriously reconsider Dorrita role and the impact her continued employment has on the learning environment.

Very tough grader. Doesn't allow you to use your laptops or IPads for notes! So most of the class is done with written notes and discussions. Feedback is very minimal and does not help at all. In my opinion, you should take this course with another professor.
The absolute worst learning experience I've ever had in my life. It is beyond clear she does not have the maturity to be a college teacher. Horrible treatment to most of her students. Douglas fails to understand that they are a college and their students experiences matter. Never have I seen a professor with worse ratings, yet here she is.
Lots of reading. Lots of In-class writing but can annotate and question given is obvious from discussions. Goes over basics and writing tips with some good handouts but majority of class is lot of chatting and opinion sharing. Intimidating at first but is actually nice and will help if you reach out. Very tough grader. You had to choose a final essay topic relevant to any of the readings she chose which was helpful cause you could cite those sources in the essay but was also difficult because for me none of the topics intrigued me. Had to retake this class because I got a C with her and took with a different professor and got an easy B+.

This teacher is brutal. Every assignment is done in class under a timer with minimal time. Actively tells the class she won't be giving anyone an A on any assignment. I endured this class till the midterm when I had a panic attack and never went back.
