She's an awesome prof. Unique and punky :)
Dont ever ever ever even consider this prof. Shes is a very judgemental, very angry woman that has a hard time understanding peoples personal interests or even caring whether her students are learning or not. She is mean, spiteful, and actually shakes with anger when someone is late to her class. a total psycho!
Did not explain anything and spent the classes watching movies. However we were marked very harshly and she never helped us improve. Had no writing lesson at all for essays. I still dont know how to write an essay. If you want to fail or have a bad mark take this class.
Ultimately disappointing. I was eager to learn about academic writing, but instead was forced to watch movies and listen to music. Which would be fine if she marked as easy as she taught. Unfortunately she was a very difficult marker making her standards frustratingly incongruent. Would NOT reccomend this professor.
Could not stay on topic, was never a clear theme for more than a class
Her lectures are extremely interesting. We get to watch movies, listen to music and learn a broad range of social issues that's going on in the world. CONS: NONE OF US LEARN HOW TO WRITE PAPERS!NOR IMPROVE OUR SKILLS IN ACADEMIC WRITING. MARKS EXTREMELY HARD ON ESSAY !CLASS AVG: C.
I can't leave my grade because I decided to leave halfway through the class. She had absolutely no flexability. I looked at the course content and did not see how it would help me writing academic papers. She will take percentage off for being late or absent and if she doesn't like the reason you were absent will not provide the hand-outs.
she is one of the most helpful, funny teacher i've ever had.i took english 1106 with her this summer, her notes are extremely organized.she makes her class very relax and fun atmosphere to learn.we watched youtube clips, movie time, group discussion. all of those help me learn a lot.i will definitely recommend to take her. she is such a sweetheart.
she didn't teach me to write better, which is the reason for the course. you will learn more about Society than proper essay writing. talks alot, students often can't answer questions due to confusion. Some reading and class discusions were fun but not until half way throgh the semester. The first essay you write is the midterm which is worth alot.
never ever take this prof. worst prof i have ever had. is not helpful and goes on and on about nonsense. treats students like they are in elementary school and she has the skills to be a teacher for a preschool clasroom not university level. i cannot name anything positive about this prof or her class.
Worst teacher i've ever had in my life. NEVER would I tell someone to take her class. Even if it was the last option in my schedule I would still not take her class, I would rather be done a year later.
compared to another first year English class that i took and a prof that i had, this prof is a lot better. I felt i could go to her for help and she gives clear and good examples of what is expected for assignments if i didn't understand i could ask her easily, i thought she would be strict but she ended up being my fav prof and taught my fav class
Sucked, didn't teach for crap, useless discussions, had a debate that was also useless, felt like I was in a bad high school class. Marked every single in class write as a god damn final draft, for people that do not know, that is a BAD THING since it is a first draft.
I agree with the other comments saying she treats everyone else like elementary students. Personally, she did not mark me as hard as others in my class, but it was still in the C range. Also has a no cellphone in class rule where she would tell you to put it away even if you weren't bothering anyone or checking the time.
Spoke quickly but clearly. It's fairly obvious she is an English teacher trying to teach a gender course rather than the other way around. Very strict on lateness and cell phone use. Slightly condescending to her class.
I do not recommend this prof to anyone. In class discussions were pointless, and her own agenda seemed to detract from the learning aspect of the course. The course material was horrendously boring, and completely irrelevant! I learned absolutely nothing, except that she's a man hater and there is no point in taking this class.
felt like a psycology class not english. matarials were useless she is very helpful but a hard marker. Treats you like you are 12 years old.
Terrible, just terrible, worst teacher I've ever had here in every way. Treats us like we're little kids, marks hard, expects you to read a whole novel in a week, she's mean, discussions are useless.
She's not the best... If you have your phone out before class starts or if you're looking at material for another class she tells you to put it away. Absolutely no talking in her class, which is annoying. We aren't kids..
Her class discussion was pointless and boring. She made us read articles before every class. There was absolutely no writing done in class to prep us for exams. When feedback was given and I write and revised it all I got back was a C- waste of my summer and I didn't learn anything relevant to improve my writing but I did learn to read!
A really hard marker. Class discussion was alright. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY AND YOU WILL LOSE 3% PER MISSED CLASS AND .5% IF YOU ARE LATE. Lots of reading & definitely not a GPA booster.
No writing is done in her class yet she marks unrealistically hard. She does not prep us well for exams and classes are filled with pointless discussions, we are marked on our writing yet we do none in class. Her expectations are unrealistic based on what she teaches in class: how is one supposed to be a good writer if we aren't taught it in class?
Much of the class time is dedicated to her talking about how to be better writers, but not actually writing. Personally, she went over things very clear and concise, but marked way above and beyond what we were expected to know. Definitely will not be re-taking this class with her.
Very hard marker, talks way too fast. I was unsure if I was going to do well on the midterm and final as she did not grade much of my handed in work before I went into the tests.
Its not a fiction reading class but more like academic writing class and her expectation on students are just too much. And it is actually women study class. Always talks about difference between men and women.
do not take a course with her. she talks fast, classes are full of group discussions rather than learning how to write. little emphasis on improving writing skills yet very, very high expectations while marking. told students they should consider dropping the course because they "weren't ready" yet. almost all got P or F. treats class like kids.
Please only take her class if you wish to do poorly. The worst professor I have ever had. Very condescending to students. Second class quiz on classroom policies, ie. how much % you lose if you miss a class. NO CELLPHONES, even on break. You have to LEAVE the class at break to use one. Ridiculous.
Dorritta attempts to be personable, by often incorporating real-world examples into her lectures. However this is hindered by her no-cell policy, which makes students feel like they are being treated like children. A very fast talker, make sure you keep your "yellow card" to slow her down. Not one for classroom discussion.
She talks at the speed of a bullet. Classes are basically her lecturing about writing, but no actual writing is done in class. There are only a few writing assignments and she marks those really hard. Wouldn't recommend having a class with her.
Worst. Choice. Ever. Not proud, but this was the second time I took this course because I put absolutely no effort in to the first and I should have I regret that. I put in 10 times more effort, went to almost all the classes(which I never did), and actively participated In class discussions. Same grade recieved Because she marks us like 4th year.
Dorritta tries hard. She puts a lot of work into her classes but she's too mechanistic. Her expectations are far too high and she is a very hard marker. I would not recommend her, especially if you are taking this class out of personal interest. If you MUST take her - she does notice effort, intiative and participation which will boost your grade.
She makes you read a lot, and is a very hard marker. A C- in her class is the equivalent of an B in other classes
Dorritta tries very hard however her studying techniques don't work. Consider yourself lucky if you receive a C- in her class. She speaks so fast that I used to zone out. Good for me that I dropped her class before any further damage. I'll not recommend her for Academic Writing.
I really enjoyed this class. It is challenging, but you're there to learn and get better. Dorritta does speak fast, so pay attention, and use your yellow card if it's too fast. Dorritta is kind, and helpful. Ask for extra help if you need it, and do the work, this is not high school!
Not allowed to use your cell phones even during the breaks and you get two "free" missed classes. Any more than that and you lose 5% per. A tree must have killed her dog or something, every class requires you to print 10+ pages and bring it with you. Highest mark anyone got on anything during the whole year was a B- and her feedback is useless.
Honestly hate this class. She talks way to fast, you can't use your phone in class (even during breaks. You literally have to leave the classroom to use it), gives no clear instructions on assignments, expects you to write like a genius, and is a very VERY hard marker. The highest grade is a C. Do not take her class unless you want to fail!!!!
This class was very challenging. Obviously attend all classes unless you wanna fall back. You really have to work your butt off if you wanna get at least a B-. Although she is nice, I only recommend taking her if you like a challenge in learning, she actually is a tough marker. She also talks super fast.
Dorritta should not be a professor. Her class is an absolute nightmare for me. No one received higher than a C or C- in her class which makes no sense because after taking Eng 1130 with another prof I received an A. I agree with the previous comments! She talks way to fast that what she is saying makes no sense. Terrible Prof, DONT TAKE HER
Very inspiring teacher. If you're expecting to get an easy A, without putting in any real effort, you are mistaken. The class is challenging, yet it's perfectly fair. One can achieve a decent score by putting in effort. In general, Ms. Fong is a very helpful teacher who is always available whenever assistance is required. I enjoyed it a lot.
Yup she is a tough marker but you will learn more from her than anyone else. put the tough work in at the beginning and go to see her you will be fine most important you will see your grades will get better in all your other classes because of her. She is king a passionate and a great teacher
I did my course selection late and should've known there was a reason her class didn't have a wait list. She talks all class and makes you have group discussions, however doesn't stay on track with the content that is supposed to be provided in the course. You lose 3% for each class you miss once you've used up your two free passes. Don't recommend
Respectful prof but extremely hard marker for no reason. Unclear about what she wants. Worst english prof at Douglas. Don't take her class if you care your GPA.
She is very enthusiastic, but she grades way too hard. She expects amazing essays from us, however never teaches us how to actually write. She talks really fast and is very hard to follow, her lectures don't go anywhere, ever. She takes marks off when you're late. I did not listen to these reviews because i thought everyone was exaggerating but no.
Insanely hard midterms
Meh kind of teacher but is a nice person, cares a lot about students and tries very hard. Her (mandatory) lectures are almost pointless since she just points out the obvious. Her standard for 1st year english is way too high, don't really teach you how to write up to the standard she wants. She is a tough grader. GPA will tank if you take her.
Marks insanely hard for no reason, feedback is not specific. Loves to make everyone struggle. Many kids drop out, they are considered the smart ones.
She grades like a fourth year. Shes doing a bad job at making this an easy intro class
Do not take this class if you do not need it. She marks incredibly difficult on your writing, except will not teach one single class on how to make your writing better. During all classes she only talks about the books we as a class are reading. I did not learn anything from taking this class. Waste of time and money.
Some of her lectures outside of reading materials are actually quite fun now. Still, her gradings are agonizingly tough as far as intro class goes, and I can assure it is not worth the challenge when her feedbacks for any papers don't help you improve at all. Office hours does help improve your score somehow, but she gets distracted way too easily.
I did not have her as a prof but I did as a sub. She talks super fast and would randomly call people out in class and badger them at whether or not they did the reading right there in front of the class. She would interrupt you when giving your pov of a story or poem telling you that you're wrong before you get the chance to finish your point.
One of the most horrible teachers I've ever had. Talks way too much and discusses topics strangely. I would DO NOT recommend if you are taking English 1106
Dorritta is a really hard marker but she cares a lot about her students. Totally worth taking this class! Ask for help -- do the homework!
Just a bad prof. Criteria is so meticulous that its almost impossible to follow. Conversation in class is elementary school level, but her expectations for paper quality is 4th year uni level. Took this as a GPA booster :( For context, I have taken over 7 first/second year english courses and my GPA was 4.0 and I got a B-....
First years hear me out, she has really high expectations. I wasn't expecting her to be so hard. My whole class failed it two assignments she gave us. I don't understand why she expects us to read her mind on these things. She doesn't know how to use the blackboard which is very helpful for the student. Speaks really fast, and not helpful .
How is this person even a professor?!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! The worst class I have ever taken. Dorritta Fong is a hard marker & does not help you when you ask for help. She also does not care if you miss class for a legitimate reason (you skip you fail) . Be prepared to do a lot of readings for this class about 8 readings per week (3 chapters, 4 long & boring additional readings).
A kind professor who works hard to make classes enjoyable to her students and to see that the concepts of her lectures are understood. She expects a lot & teaches like a 1st yr professor until it comes to the 4th yr level paper/exams. 1/3 of your grade will be based on the papers, and another 1/3 on the exams. Both of which you are likely to fail
Amazing prof, a tough grader but one of the nicest professors at Douglas. I haven't got my final grade with her yet and even if she fails me my review would stay the same for her. Really interactive and interesting lectures. Will definitely take another course with her if possible.
This professor tries to pack in way too much content and as a result rushes through everything. Some of the topics were interesting but was overall too many readings to ever go in depth. I believe electronics should be used in her class to save paper and the use of blackboard would be more helpful. She is also a very tough grader.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is a hard marker and expects a lot from her students. She gives out 3-4 readings per class for homework. When asked for help she does not help or explain things thoroughly.
If you've thought about taking English 1130 with Dorritta Fong I suggest you reconsider. She covers unrelated and unnessary topics in this class and does not cover course content so it is understandble to students. I will never refer her to anyone, nor will I ever take a class with her again. Nice person, shouldn't be a college professor.
DO NOT take a first year class with Dorritta. She is SO unclear about what she wants for writing assignments, and failed multiple students on our 1st writing assignment. prepare for major stress and uncertainty for any handed in writing assignments. Exam grading is messed up, and incredibly stressful. Expect to read an excessive amount.
she speaks really fast, does not care about her students, tough grader and requires so much work. cant read her penmanship either!!
nice person until it comes to marking essays, tough grader, picky about citations and won't teach u about it but will report u to the dean for plagiarism if u don't do it right. criteria is unclear for every essay, however really engaging with the class and keeps discussions going, participate a lot to get extra marks and makes class interesting
Don't take it. She gives amazing lectures but is completely unorganized and doesn't know what she wants in an essay. Over half the class dropped it and the remaining few are failing. She does not teach you what she wants in a paper. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! YOU WILL REGRET IT!
Worst teacher I have ever had in College. Please save yourself from this teacher. Over half of the students were failing and dropped the class! Would not recommend this teacher at all. I feel bad for everyone in the class. She marks way too hard for first-year students. Never explains how she wants her essays done, and will give you an F.
If you need to take an English class do not do it with Dorritta while very engaging in lectures, over half the class dropped the course and the remainder are failing or feel that they will. It is very unclear on what she is seeking for essays and she grades incredibly tough. While very nice I cannot recommend her as a teacher.
I thought that I would take this course even though I checked rate my prof.. Don't make my mistake and save yourself money, time and your GPA. Don't take her class. She does not give any feedback on how to improve your writing, she talks the whole class (didn't actually work on writing) and gives an abundant amount of papers to read.
Insane year with Dorritta! While her lectures were somewhat engaging, they didnt help with essay writing. I would recommend Dorritta reads the feedback from students. And improve next semester. Dorritta, please stop giving students Fs, and help your students who arent doing well. A good prof will talk to students one on one and explain the F.
Dorritta the most aggravating, unhelpful, and inconsiderate teacher. Her teaching style is nonexistent. She doesnt teach, rather she made made us to discuss the topics in groups. We had to teach ourselves. I am speak in behalf of my class, no one in the whole class learn anything from her. Save your money, Save your GPA, Save yourself.
It seems like Dorritta is unhappy to come to work, and doesn't express any effort towards her students. She truly isn't a pleasant teacher and someone that makes you hate English with a passion. In high school, English was my favorite class. Now, thanks to Dorritta Fong English is my least favorite class. She lacks good characteristics.
Dorrita is extremely judgemental. When you answer in class, and it isn't the answer she wants, she will look at you as if you are stupid. I felt very discouraged in her class. There was little feedback on how to improve essay writing. Class felt like a negative environment with Dorritta. When you ask her for help, she is unclear and harsh.
She treats you as if you are in elementary school, she gives chocolate after every midterm, assignment due date, and final. It's absolutely ridiculous how she expects chocolate will make us like her. She talks like we are children, yet expects fourth-year level writing skills. She discusses topics absurdly and only talks about feminism. WORST PROF!
Not a good way to start my first semester of College. Do not take a class with Dorritta if you wanna do poorly or even fail.
do not take her class. Save yourself, Save your money, save ur gpa. Worst teacher ever! Who hired her seriously doesnt care about education. Simple.
You wont pass this class, okay if you do, you will only get a c. Dont take her! Shes an awful human being.
Worst teacher ever. I do not recommend her! Her teaching style is horrible and useless. I hope she dies.
In all of my 13 years of education, never did I think I would have this horrible experience. Do not waste your semester, money, and precious gpa. You wont learn anything from her. I feel bad for who has to stand Dorrita. She is not a nice person.
WORST TEACHER EVER AWARD!
This teacher made my life a living hell. Let me tell you, if you are considering taking her. Dont! Even if you need this class as a credit, take it with someone else. Clearly she has relationship problems and takes it out on her students.
Do not take her, please. Shes absolutely awful.
I recommend dropping her class even if you cant get your money back. Honestly if you think you are gonna fail or do bad. Its not worth it, just save your gpa. Dont think about the money, think about your grades. If you fail this class, you will be on academic probation. Words cant explain how much I dont want anyone to suffer as much as me.
Talks too fast
Dorritta may be good at other things, but being a professor is not one of them. DO NOT be fooled into thinking this really is an english class or even gender studies. It's her force feeding her opinion of men vs women. Failed majority of my class. I cant express enough how bad this class is for you and your gpa. Do NOT recommend.
Dorritta is not a mean person, I'll give her that, but she is an AWFUL prof. She hardly grades you on anything English related, instead, if you didn't major in Gender Studies or Poli Sci, you will fail her class. She lacks any clarity, and her long lectures have zero substance. I have learned nothing, other than I will never take her class again.
Dorritta is probably the worst professor i have ever had. She does not grade anything in a timely manner. I had no idea what grade i had going into the final because none of my marks were up. Plus she is an extremely hard marker. I felt the lectures were a waist of my time. Save yourself and do not take this class with her.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS, if you have the option of a different prof take there class.
Hard marker but cares a lot about students.
Very interesting!
Has high expectations and is funny. Hard marker but is really helpful in office hours.
I expected to hate this course, but she made it really interesting. Great teacher!
Loved this class!
High expectations but very helpful.
I worked really hard and it was a great class!
This was a required class and I was dreading it, but the prof made it really interesting and rewarding.
I learned to write essays and it was hard work but worth it!
Really helpful in office hours and kind.
Thorough and helpful, lots of interesting books.
Tough class but very helpful prof.
Solid reading load and great books--hard work but worth it.
This was a required class and very helpful to me program.
A lot of really interesting reading. Don't fall behind!
I worked really hard and learned great skills.
Excellent at getting class to talk.
She obviously worked really hard to make the online class interesting.
Be sure to go to office hours and ask questions and you will do fine.
Mandatory class was made much more interesting than I expected.
Thorough and careful teacher--be sure to ask questions!
Difficult class and hard work, but great teacher!
Really kind teacher, great books.
Amazing class about gender--so interesting with lots of great books!
Be sure to be on time and in class and participate.
Class was a lot of work and I learned how to write essays--very helpful.
She works hard to make discussions fun. Great prof!
Dorritta is a hard marker but really cares about her students
Super nice teacher and her class is interesting. She makes you think and really helps you learn how to write. She is clear in her marking and very accessible --go to her office hours for sure. I would take her again for literature.
Lots of reading and a really great class.
So nice--strict and I learned a lot.
Ask her questions and keep up with the readings.
My first semester at Douglas(I have attended another college)was such a slap to the face entering this class. She basically failed the entire class on our first assignment without any explanation for the F grade. Instead of helping you fix the F and improve she just threatens with consequences. She is awful you will fail unless youra English major.
First of all she does not allow laptops nor phones (she goes ballistic.) Toughest grader, vaguely tells you whats wrong with your paper. Her lectures are dragged on way too long. She uses an unnecessary amount of paper every class. Every class missed is a percentage off. My class began with around 23 and ended with 6 people.
Had to drop this class as soon as I got the chance, she is rude and monotone
Idk what happened between her last semester and this, but she is an awful teacher now. She grades you as if you're an english major. No one received anything higher than a solid B on ANY paper she assigned us because there only ended with 9 of us. This is a first semester course and she left a bad taste in my mouth. For real, don't take her class
I very much enjoyed Professor Fong's class. She was kinda understanding, and it was a pleasure listening to her lectures. Make no mistake, she is a fair marker, makes you work for it and wants you to succeed. Ask her for help, read the material, show up to class, contribute. She is very clear what she is looking for. Was one of my first classes. <3
Heavy reading load, really interesting books. Very funny class.
This class really helped me learn to write essays. There's a lot of reading but it is really interesting.
There's not enough characters for me to explain how many things were wrong with this course. Do not take her as a prof. Biggest number of dropouts in a class i've ever seen. Grades insanely hard with no explanation why the whole class collectively failed an assignment. No phones, even on break. Lectures irrelevant to everything and SO boring.
Don't ever take her unless you want to be a slave to school. She will run you into ground with so many assignments. Grades extremely hard for absolutely no reason. Extremely strict with phones and forces students to participate.
One of the most boring classes I have ever taken. Douglas has idiots running courses. No phones allowed. She is a dinosaur and will make you use paper. Anything and everything bothers her. I liked english and fiction till she ruined it for me. She doesn't tell you what she expects in her essays and fails you. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T TAKE HER!
I would rather hear Donald Trump talk about himself for two hours than ever attend her class again. She is extremely boring and grades papers like we all have a Ph.D. in English. Most of the students drop her class. For the midterms her class average was F/P, and I think that says enough about her as an instructor. Not worth the stress at all!
Last semester in English 1130 all of my papers received B+/B, this semester I couldn't get passed a C- in any of my assignments. The textbook for this class wasn't available 2weeks+ into the course. If you wanted to use your phone you had to step outside the class into the hallway, you should be allowed to do what you want during a 10min break.
she is super strict in every possible way. But you learn in a very hard way with her. Its very hard to please her. Nobody got a B in class. Everybody would fail left and right. Reconsider taking this class with D. Fong
never take her as a professor if you don't want to ruin your semester and who didn't want to meet dean. be ready for a plagiarism game and low grades.
RUN from this teacher, RUN. there is absolutley no negociating with administration about relieving this teacher of their position. forces you to print documents from BB since technology is not allowed. Draws out the class and doesn't provide concrete examples for improving writing. Do yourself a favour and drop it unless you want to fail.
Life-changing class--I read great books!
She's really nice--go to office hours for help!
I am a much better writer now. Take her course!
Go see her in office hours for help. Great class!
She is a hard marker but she is very kind and I learned to write!
I worked really hard and the class was great! Don't fall behind on the reading.
In Dorritta's class, there is one person who writes the green reviews. Don't be plagarising assesments, I see you. ;p Look at the review scale, "That ain't right" Course had me yelling Christ
She's a hard marker, but if you work and ask questions, you will be fine.
She wasn't good. She is a very tough grader, and it was impossible to get a good mark in her class!
She was really kind and I learned a lot from the class.
This was such a fun class and we read great books.
Discussions in class were great!
I learned so much about critical thinking!
Very tough course, get ready for tons of readings.
honestly, she is a good teacher just her way of explaining (or lack of explaining) material, especially assignments was very frustrating. we would get our previous assignment marks back the day before our new assignment/essay was due so there was no way to improve. no cellphones/laptops allowed, and get ready to be called on during class.
The book she provides for learning to write better uses examples in the first person which is not allowed in academic writing. (meaning that using the book will actually harm you in the class) She provides more course work than 2nd and 3rd year courses. I don't think anyone got above a C+.
She has reputation for being a hard marker and it's not that its 'impossible' to get a good mark in her class, but the student needs to have a good grasp of the English language and good writing skills. Firstly, I noticed that there is a lot of ESL student in her class. If English if you're second language, don't take the course.
I had to read a lot, but it was really interesting. Make appointments to see her in office hours for help.
This class was a lot of work, but my writing and reading are so much better!
Never take a course with her
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! VERY RUDE ATTITUDE, NO LAPTOPS TO TAKE NOTES, VERY CONDESCENDING ATTITUDE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! I RATHER GO TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL TO TAKE THIS COURSE AND TRANSFER BACK IN THE CREDITS THAN TAKE HERS! DON'T DO IT!!!!!
Make sure you do the readings and participate--I learned so much about reading and writing!
She expects way too much from just a first year course and grades as if we're English majors. If English is one of your strongest subjects, and you participate a lot, you should probably be fine. If English is not one of your strong subjects and you need this course for credit, pick a different professor.
This professor at Douglas College is the worst! She wants too much from first-year students and is really mean when you ask for help. She'd give you an F without explaining why. I thought she'd be great because of the some good reviews, but she was a total waste of my time and money.
I regret enrolling in her class.
At the start of the semester, there were 15 students enrolled, but by the end, only 7 or 8 remained. It's disappointing to see such a significant drop in attendance, and it reflects poorly on the professor's effectiveness.
She's the worst teacher I've ever had at Douglas College. She's mean without any good reason. If you're an international student struggling with English, you'll probably fail her class. And even in emergencies, she won't give you any extra time to finish your work.
If your English writing isn't "perfect," be prepared to fail.
The class is super boring, and the lectures are long and hard to handle.
I decided to take her classes because of those five-star reviews, but now I regret it.
She is way too harsh in grading for no good reason. The papers I wrote for my other courses this semester received a B/B+, while the papers I wrote for her course received a C-/D. I have never gotten a grade below a C in an essay (even in high school) until I took her course. Just save yourself and pick a different professor.
The worst instructor I have ever had.
fails to provide adequate feedback. Taught greater.
The class was challenging without much support, making it difficult to grasp concepts.
Not recommended if you need guidance; lectures were unclear and unhelpful.
She's a nice, understanding and helpful professor
Not helpful at all.
I wouldn't recommend this course, especially if you're an international student. The professor is a really tough grader, and her instructions are super unclear. When you ask for help, she responds in an unprofessional way and doesn't really support you. Instead of helping you improve, she just points out your weaknesses.
Very tough marker. If you did good in previous English writing courses, be prepared to do worse. Tends to do peer reviews for major papers but does not provide enough of her own feedback. 2 books required. Most work is done in class and submitted online. Device use is only allowed during assessments.
While the class can be challenging, unstuck AI's tools were a lifesaver for study prep. The lectures are dry, but the textbook is useful. Attendance is mandatory, so be prepared to put in the effort.
No just no..
worst prof ever. her lectures were irrelevant and mostly picked on people. she usually targeted those who barely spoke. gives no feedback and a useless rubric that doesn't help with anything. it is impossible to know what you do wrong in your writing because she refused to tell you. whole semester you felt in an endless loop of stress. the WORST!
Very unprofessional in a lot of areas in her teaching. Treats and talks to her students with little respect, except a certain few. Easily irritated when asking for support and makes class feel very unwelcoming. Overall she provides an unpleasant environment to be around and a terrible learning experience. Strongly do not recommend.
Brace yourself! This professor expects excellence and doesn't compromise. Be prepared to work hard, read deeply, and think critically.
Tough grader with zero patience for questions.
I don't recommend this teacher if you're taking 3-4 courses, it takes up a lot of your time and there is a lot of reading you have to do. I had friends in the same course and different teacher who all succeeded, but this teacher makes this course difficult. Out of the 30 kids at the beginning of my class there was only 13 of us left at the end.
Although I found her being pretty nice and helpful when I approached her for help, however, I DO NOT recommend her. She had the ridiculous attendance system which your final grade will be deducted by -3% per absent, after the first two free absents, and -0.5% per lates. She also is a tough grader, be prepared to read A LOT.
She's a very hard marker and she assigns a lot of articles to read. She takes away marks for being late and skipping class. Her lectures were kind of boring and she sometimes plays favourites and picks on people. But, she was very friendly to me and she seems very cheerful, bubbly, and enthusiastic when teaching. She is inspiring as well.
Worst prof ever. Wouldn't wish her on anyone. Attendance is mandatory and she will start to deduct your grade if you don't show up or if you're late. She will call on you in class, and will even call you out if you try to ask a friend or someone a question. Should have read the reviews before having the class they're all true. 9/30 people remained
This professor is totally disrespectful and impatient. When I asked her for help, she treat me hateful and rude. Once I reply a question of her she questioned me angrily and I don't know why she was so mad for an only small mistake of my answer. I could say it is uncomfortable and boring class and I suggest you don't take it!
Probably the worst English professor I've ever had. Please do NOT take her classes and avoid her at all costs. Any teacher is better than her! Rude and unprofessional!
worst prof ever, straight rude, endless reading, tests every class, no phone in class and i mean not even on break...i went to the washroom (she took my phone) and she followed me there! i'm a good kid im not doing anything weird i just needed to blow my nose. She made me hate my favourite subject and made me feel like the worst writer in the world
Please don't listen to all the negative reviews (or at least take them with a TRUCKLOAD of salt). 90% were written by one salty student. Yes, she doesn't allow phones in class. Yes, there's a lot of reading. But if you're prepared to engage and be challenged you will love it. Insightful, nuanced, sensitive discussions, good feedback on assignments.
by far the worst teacher i've had to date. she made the content stressful for no reason while making the classroom uncomfortable. the midterm was our first graded essay and was written in class - horribly stressful experience. I ended up questioning my dedication to my education. I retook the course w/ a different prof and got an A. don't bother
Run away from her! She is terrible at understanding students she isn't the teacher who will make your life easy and help you out if you struggle she teaches to fail students. Not talking nor asking for help will be helpful because she gets annoyed
Though this class is definitely not a first year class, I fear most of these reviews are from first-years that don't have enough respect for their profs yet. I have never had a class teach me so many valuable things before; overall made my college experience much easier and my grades have improved incredibly. Requires 100% effort to pass
Approach her classes with humility and a good attitude and you will be fine. Not GPA boosters but will significantly increase your critical thinking skills and subsequently your academic confidence. Doritta is passionate about her role; harsh but fair grader, actually cares about your learning, and gives back the energy she receives from students.
This was a tough class but I learned so much! Great and fun discussions, but make sure you do the readings.
She is less of a teacher and more of a propagandist. Unless you agree with her pre prepared to fail. She is also a very tough grader and spends most of class talking about social issues rather than english. She will watch beyonce and other clips completely unrelated to english. you are expected to learn on your own, she will not teach you.
more than half the class dropped out. if you see someone rate with a grade just know they are one of the 10 students who didnt drop the course. only 13 students remained before i dropped
Its brutal
brutal. good luck if you take it.
First month will be tough and has heavy test/writing load. Every class has assignment: essay/quick quiz on readings. She will talk abt social themes of the day based on readings. Not a grade booster, but is not hard to get 70. Pay attention in class and read detailed summary of readings. Many people dropped out too early before load went down.
I don't even know where to start from, only wonder how she is still in business
