She is OBSESSIVELY THUROUGH....which makes me fee like I am getting my education's worth.

People who can't hack Dr. O'Brien's class are simply too lazy to educate themselves and prefer to have other people tell them how to think. Dr. O'Brien is a challenge which should be looked upon as a refreshing challenge rather than domination.

This instructor is good at what she does. If she can't recall the answer to a question then she will ask a colleague. She does tend to go off track throughout the semester, but who couldn't use a side-track from English? She is tough.

They call her the feminist nazi, I call her the killer of students who should not be in college. I loved her as a teacher. You either like her or you don't. Simple, English comp is hard no matter who you take it with.

Hard But very good teacher.

I really enjoyed this class and looked forward to coming. She expects her students to work for their grades, which some people have a problem with. I feel like a better writer now and am comfortable with poetry and plays. If you want to increase your intelligence, take her. Lazy people beware!

I could listen to Ms. O'Brien talk all day- she's full of insight. She's a hard-ass, but if you actually want to learn something she's the professor to take. It's my opinion that the only people who dislike her are the people who lack "creative intellegence"... or perhaps intellengence altogether.

There is no doubt about it. The woman knows what she's talking about. Her class is challenging, but I definitely learned a lot during the class. Sometimes she goes off on tangents, but most of the time they are interesting, to me anyway.

very demanding teacher, but extremely helpful and will go out of her way for students. she does get on her soap box but it's always interesting. i would recommend her for anyone who doesn't expect to get good grades for little effort. only those with limited intelligence and severe laziness would not like her.

Kind of hard but a very intelligent woman with a wonderful sense of humor. I would reccomend this class to anyone and take it again. Outstanding!

AWESOME! If you love to be challenged she is the one for you! she is full of spunk and doesnt like dealing with ignorant people. She will definitly improve your writing scores. I thouroughly enjoyed her class. Note to those who need help, see her during office hours, sometimes she can be too outspoken and hurt your feelings. She is Never boring.

Professor O'Brien is extremely demanding. She will not baby her students and demands self motivation. Can be quite harsh and intimidating to less confident students. Knows her stuff and loves to discuss & encourages her students to think about current events. She is the first teacher at OWC that challenged me. Wish her all the best. Rick

She is very tough but very fair. She is more than willing to help, even if she needs to meet with you out of class.

Although I do have great respect for Doctor O'Brien and her opinion, I do not share the same views as she does, and the only complaint I would have for her class is that I wish she would have focused more on the actual class rather than on her political views. As long as you pay attention and follow directions you will make a passing grade.

Great teacher. Don't take her class if you don't want to put effort into it.

Proff. O'Brien challenges her students to be better, if that is what you want take her class. Pay attention and do the work and you will pass.

Great Prof

I absolutly loved Dr. O'brien! She wasn't easy, but i learned alot from her class!

Pretty fun teacher; if you are polite and do your work she'll like you. She does have a habit of being testy with students, but it is /usually/ provoked by immature behavior. Her political rants during class time are somewhat uncalled for but make the class more interesting. Plus, the tests are easy and the assignments are short.

All right.....Everyone look.....She is hard, and yes she grades hard, get usto it...she grades hard for 101 but not nearly as hard at some of the upper level divison classes. IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT, DROP OUT OF COLLEGE. COLLEGE is not for the faint hearted. If you can't hack this class, you don't belong in college. "Its a weeding class"

Professor O'Brien is a very hard professor, but great for students who really want to learn. The midterm was open book and she allows rewrites on the first three compositions. I would definitely recommend this professor to anyone who does not mind hard work!

At first she seems really strict, but it's just for show. She grades hard but gives you plenty of time and help if you need it. You get re-writes for every essay but 1 and you get one late pass...I hate english but I enjoyed her class, you always pick your own topic so you can easily make it interesting for yourself..Highly recommend!!

Dory makes each student improve from the point they personally are at from Essay 1. I was already a talented writer; therefore I had to work HARD for my A! She is fair. She is merciful. She is funny as heck and yes, she is tough as nails. And I adore her! She has strong opinions but respects others too. INCREDIBLE prof! Had her 4 years at Olivet!

I loved Dr. O'Briens' class. She is fair and fun (much more fun than Price the hag). I learned fro Dr. O and enjoyed going to and being in her class.

Proffesor O'Brien was great. She truly cares about the education. She really wants her students to learn the material. I took her for English Comp 1 and I could not have been happier. Her style of teaching is great, and she will go out of her way to help her students.

Yes she is hard but so is life! her class requires effort and if you arent willing to put any in dont take her. For those who want a prof that you can actually gain something from and you arent afraid to try take her class. i learned more about english from her than i have from any other teacher! i would take her all over again if needed!

Ms. O'Brien is the hardest english teacher ever. However, if you give the class your all, you will become a great writer. I will never forget her either!

Passionate about French, great teacher. Keeps it interesting. You have to study (which is the case for learning ANY foreign language) BUT she reviews everything in class. No suprises. Crystal clear explanations.

Anyone who does not put REAL effort into this class has no reason to complain. This professor is one of the best I have ever had. She will refine you. If you can't take the heat, get out of the frying pan and don't waste her time. By the way, judging from the editing errors in some of the comments, I can see why most of you did not do well.

She has a sort of dry sense of humor but i thought she was funny. She only has you write 4 papers and she edits them......alot and allows for a re-write. If you put time and effort into the class...there is really noreason you shouldn't do fairly well (unless you are not a native english speaker...then you might have a problem....

I took O'Brien years ago, and she is still one of my favorite professors. She had a wry sense of humor and a healthy supply of good stories/life lessons to impart. She was concerned with her students' entire intellectual development--not just their ability to write an outline--and used to lend me books to read (one of which I still need to return).

As long as you do what is expected of you as a COLLEGE STUDENT you will do just fine in this class. Do not be intimidated....I believe this class will either make you or break you. Learn time management, take responsibility and if you want it bad enough...do your work and get the grade you deserve :o)

Mrs. Obrien is retiring this semester. She makes me wish I would have came back to school way earlier. I would take every class she taught. I absolutely Love her.

Dory was the finest professor I experienced throughout college. (Olivet). She challenges, questions, and refines one as a writer. Her class is NOT for sissies. If you put forth the effort, she will expand your writing ability and lead you far beyond your expectations. If you think she is not fair, you have no business wasting her time.
