This is an extremely dry class. the Power point lectures are directly out of the book, which makes reading un-necessary. She barley gives us breaks (and its a 3 hour long class). I have to be extremely motivated to even concider attending.
class is long and the lecture is on powerpoint whic is also accessible through the portal which means u can skip class.
She is not helpful. The class is boring and long. She stands in front of the class and talks and all you do is look at her and her power-point. The test is hard. I dropped the class because I was not learning anything. You don’t want to take this class with her if you really want to learn. You are not given home work your grade is based on th
It's obvious she's a knew professor, she is working on making her classes more interactive with group projects (they are very easy). The grade is based on 3 exams and the project, but the tests aren't hard if you show up regularly. Give her a chance, she has plenty of potential, just needs to find her niche and get comfortable.
Dory is obviously very knowledgeable on the subjects she is teaching but she needs to do something different besides lecture straight from the powerpoints which are straight from the book. She doesn't take role and she puts all notes and study guides online. It makes it easy to not go to class.
Professor Schachner is a very nice person and is very intelligent, but she has a long way to go to becoming a good teacher. Her lectures are DIRECTLY out of the book (even her examples). She apologizes constantly when a student questions her. She needs to assert herself and be more confident when she teaches. Boring lectures, nice lady.
she is a really cool person but she only lectures with powerpoint and there is so much written on the powerpoints, it is really boring. tests and lectures from book but has some tricky test questions. she will be much better with time, give her a chance
People need to get over the fact that she only uses power points. You're in college! You need to take notes on info. that's right in front of your face! Her expectations are clear and she's nice. get over it!
Very Average... boring and young! Don't bother buying the book and she takes role on occasion. She's fine, just average.
All she does is lecture from her power point in a very boring manner. She doesn't seem that interested in the subject matter and her tests are ridiculous. There are so many ambiguous answers, its hard to choose the one you think she wants. Take someone more interesting!!!
Loved the way Dr. Schachner taught social psychology it was a pefect fit, however I would have appreciated a more wholistic, happy even new-age approach to the psychology of personality, and she'll scoff at that. Still it would be a cool idea for her to differ her approach. That said a very kind and helpful prof.
LEctures off slides. Takes attendace by doing activities in class. If you review the notes and skim the paragraph in the book you can pass her tests. She is a nice teacher. I reccommend her. One paper, 3 Exams.
She is a very good teacher, and she is super cute. A bit social awkward, but hey, aren't we all in psychology.
Very dry approach to teaching which some find 'boring' but I found refreshing, as she wasn't losing the class trying to teach some new or inventive way. She teaches material using powerpoints and is straight to the point. Turn in all case studies! She canceled several class sessions, so you may show up a lot to a 'class canceled' note on the door.
Lectures off slides. I find it boring. Test was hard for me. Case studies due every week. They are the only thing keeping my grade up at this point. test was hard. went to office hours and didnt say much but 5 words. sweet lady though. this class is most likely not what you think it is going to be about, ive learned nothing
Interesting class. Can get a bit boring if you have the 3 hour session, but she does a lot of videos. Grade is based on 1 term paper, 2-3 short papers, and 2-3 tests. Tests are a bit confusing so you need to really study terms. The papers are pretty easy if you start early. She is a nice teacher, understanding, but very young.
She is incredibly sweet and easy to approach. I feel like she is still young and figuring her teaching style out. She goes directly by the book & lectures can be very boring. She is a bit akward, but it's charming on her. I would not be opposed to taking one of her classes again.
Interesting lecture. Funny professor. Exams are the majority of grade and you get a study guide prior to exam. One group paper/presentation. Weekly reading and writing assignment. Very helpful and understanding professor!
Easy !! if you go to class and pay attention you wont even have to read! the tests are pretty much vocab tests. It's a midterm, final, two short reflection papers, and a final paper only pgs long. Bit of a hard grader on the essays so make sure you turn your spell check on.
The class was pretty big, which I think contributed to the lack of work required from us. 1 term paper, a midterm and a final, 2 issue briefs, and that's it. Attendance was a huge part of the grade, but the notes were all online and reading wasn't really necessary at all. An easy class overall.
This professor is very bad, overall class was super boring and worst of all, it is most impossible to get an A. Went first on presentation and thought the group presented well, but apparently received a B. I personally think her grading sucks. Covered everything and related to course yet, received such low score. bad teacher
This class is pretty easy. 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 issue briefs, and a term paper. She curves all her tests, so don't freak out if you think you did bad. If you read the notes she provides on blackboard, you'll be fine on the tests. Attendance is definitely mandatory. This class wasn't bad though.
Dory is the nicest person you will ever meet. This was my favorite class, however it was horribly long (3 hrs). Grade based on Midterm, 2 Issue Briefs, Final Paper, and Final Exam. Everything you need to know is in the slides that she posts, and she gives you a study guide. She doesn't like when people leave her class early though. Good class!
If you get anything less than an A in this class it is your fault. Yea, the lectures are boring. Do your group presentation, go to class to get credit and make flash cards from the study guides she gives you before every test that have every single term on them. She is a nice lady.
Dory is very personable, honest and genuinely passionate about this subject. She opens up to class discussion a lot, which is great, but she does tend to be hesitant/apologetic, so she gets steamrolled by argumentative students. Could have passed just reading OR studying slides, but the class and book were interesting and worth paying attention to.
I love her! Yes she lectures off the slides and yes she can be a little dry but she's far from a "bad" teacher. The case studies are easy and the tests are a little difficult but she curves them. Only 1 paper due and it's not terribly difficult. Had this class 3 days a week for 50 minutes but time always flew by. Offers extra credit. Take her!!
great professor, tests are hard if you're not a psychology major; however there is plenty extra credit you can do which comes in handy towards the end of the semester. must attend lecture since the she will quiz you on he power points and videos. also make sure you read.
An apt teacher but she seems to be getting her footing, she hasn't identified the basic core of the subject of the psychology of hatred and violence and so we, as students, are left with a massive amount of reading. (60 pages a week is light, 109 max) She is also lacking clarity as to what will and will not be on the test. She is, however, nice.
She's is a bit tough. Go to class. Keep up with the reading and notes! or at least the notes..... Professor Schachner is always there for you when you need help. Go to class because even though she gives you the class lecture notes she explains it so well in class.
Dory is a nice teacher. However, she sticks to "the book". In other words, the format of the class is the same.. Routine. Expect a powerpoint presentation everyday with no "audience interest" in the material. I feel that I could have learned a lot from the class had their been more engagement and different types of lectures. Boring class.
I had her for social psychology and psychology of personality, I thought she was great! There was some overlap with the classes, but it didn't bother me that much. She is very clear and precise about what she expects, her lectures tell you what you need to know. She also gives a lot of examples which helped me remember a lot. Knows what she's doing
She is a really nice teacher, and she tries to be helpful to anyone who needs it. She is a little bit of a boring lecturer. She is really informed about the subject matter and presents interesting information, but slide after slide gets a little redundant. Only 3 tests, all multiple choice, 2 issue briefs (3 pages), and one term paper (6 pages).
She's a great teacher, but the lectures are boring which make it hard to stay interested. She can be awkward at sometimes. 3 exams, weekly reading logs, and one group presentation (which is really easy). I would take her again.
Dory is a great professor. Her class is really easy & she's pretty clear about all subjects. Weekly case studies, some in-class participation points, and one term paper that is pretty easy. I thought her tests were a little bit tricky, but they have both multiple choice & short essay portions which is nice. You won't need the book.
I'm am just taking this as my upper-division GE & am not a psych major. She's a decent teacher and has well-explained lectures that are easy to understand. Class consists of 3 tests, 3 short papers, class participation exercises, and some extra credit. Tests are pretty easy if you study everything on her study guide. Would take her again.
Dory is amazing! I had her for 2 classes this semester (395 and 391) and loved her for both topics. She gives you everything you need to succeed, and you can tell she really wants you to succeed. Lectures take up most of the class, but she keeps it interesting and you can tell she is very passionate and knowledgeable about the topics.
Her lectures are straightforward, not boring, and involve her own research. The weekly papers are easy to get through and are very interesting! You'll learn a lot! She also will change class structure and do things differently if she feels it'll help the students. You'll barely use the text book. I wouldn't recommend buying it.
There are weekly papers; it's not too bad if you understand her lectures. Exams can be easy if you put the effort to study from the study guide. One final paper about personality traits. Overall, a pretty easygoing class. I can tell that Professor Schachner cares a lot about her class and really wants her students to do well.
SHE IS AMAZING. She gives you four short essays but honestly they are nothing. two exams and if you do the study guide you will pass. She gives extra credit so you cant fail. Honestly just do the (easy) work and you'll get an A.
Dr. Schachner is one of my absolute favorite professors. She has a passion for what she teaches and its apparent in her lectures. Her tests reflect the assigned reading and course slide shows. She offers tons of extra credit opportunities and is often available outside of class. Funny and kind!
She is an amazing professor. She wants you to do well. There are a few papers in class and two exams. She is real about prejudice, hate and violence among poc's and minorities in general. I really love her as a professor. Amazing instructor.
I love DORY! She wants you to pass and understand. She is constantly making sure you understand the material. She gives a study guide and goes over it in class before the exam. She gives weekly case studies that are easy if you read and come to class. I really enjoy them and they test your knowledge on the material.
I love this senior seminar class. So happy to have taken Dory for it. She makes you think. She brings out this amazing apart of yourself you never knew you had. She really wants you to do well. I just appreciate her so much and everyone should take her at least once in their life.
Dory is a great professor! Can be kind of slow in her lectures, I find myself dozing off. Other than that she is very good at keeping her blackboard updated and there isn't a lot of outside work! Would recommend!
If you go to class and pay attention you will pass. Her test are based solely on the lecture slides as well as the case studies. She loves what she's teaching and will give you all the help you're willing to ask for.
Prof Schachner is a little bit quirky but an extremely nice woman who knows the subject well. Weekly case studies that are easy if you put in the effort. Two tests, and a final, plus 50 points of attendance. The tests are straight from the lectures and I only used the book when i didn't attend class. Lecture slides are posted online as well
She's kind of monotone but she posts lecture slides so you don't need to pay attention. Attendance is randomly taken for a total of 50 points. There are 3 tests with the final being cumulative. There are weekly case studies that help your grade. Her tests are mostly application questions so be careful not to simply study definitions.
No idea why her average is only 3.7, she's AMAZING! She gives background information on all of the theorists to get a solid understanding of the origin of the theories. Participation points are random. Tests aren't too bad if you study. Cumulative final was a bit challenging. She's understanding to her students also! Challenging paper if no feedbak
Great class & great professor! She is always willing to answer questions and give help. Absolutely love her!
Dory was an overall nice woman that cares about her students. My only complaint is that class was pretty boring. Attendance on random days (usually Monday and Wednesday), no homework besides three papers, and tests arent bad if you have the books or actually pay attention in class (which can be difficult).
She seems very passionate about her field. Tests are tough otherwise everything else is pretty low key. Lectures can be long and boring at times.
Lectures are super boring and she gives random participation activities at least twice a week so showing up to each class is important. Turn in case studies physically because through email she's more of a tough grader. Being super specific is important because if anything is left out it will be considered wrong.
She does give out a extra credit opportunities but only for certain number of points. I don't know if it is the material but she is very awkward, lectures are boring. She grades papers way harder as the semester goes on with the term paper being almost impossible to get a A on.I never thought a professor could make multiple choice test so difficult
Extremely lecture heavy class even though the notes are online. She's sort of a boring lecturer but participation matters so attend class everyday. 10 case studies assignments & don't plagiarize because she does give zeros for even slight similar answers. 3 exams, 2nd one is the hardest imo. Term paper is easy if you pick a interesting topic.
By far my favorite professor of all time. I took professor Schachner for both 382 and 391, both got an A. She takes the time to thoroughly explain things in class, and her office hours are there for further explanation. She gives extra credit (15 points). Her exams can be difficult if you don't know the material. Study guides are very helpful
Long and fast lectures but theyre posted online as well. Random small group assignments in classes to get credit for going and you dont know which days she does them. Really interesting topics that are important in my opinion. She encourages discussions. 3 papers, last one she grades the hardest. Turn in a hard copy and she seems to grade nicer.
I took Dory for both PSYC 391, and 395. At first her classes seemed really tough for me but she helped me understand a lot of the material. She helped me with the study guides when I didn't know the terms. I received an A in psyc 391 and a B in Psyc 395. Most of her exam questions came from lecture so definitely pay attention.
I have taken two classes from Dr. Schachner and would take more if I could. She is an excellent instructor, and definitely my favorite staff member at Chico. As long as you attend class, you'll do fine.
a good class and insightful information but the course itself requires you to conform to these beliefs she has set out in lectures. you CANNOT disagree with the opinions in this class or she will just say that you are wrong. there are a lot of breakout groups as well where you need to conform too. Overall easy class but you must conform to do so
Good teacher, tests are pretty tough, definitely have to study. 3 papers to do. Not hard though, fairly easy. She offers a decent amount of extra credit and will work with you if you talk to her. Pretty interesting class although not my favorite topics.
I took PSYC 391 online due to COVID. Its my first semester transferring to Chico State and this class was my least favorite class I've taken so far. Exams are really tough and she can be a tough grader ESPECIALLY on the term paper. The paper screwed me and I couldn't even revise or redo it. Its frustrating because she didn't work with me.
I took PSYC 391 online due to COVID. Its my first semester transferring to Chico State and this class was my least favorite class I've taken so far. Exams are really tough and she can be a tough grader ESPECIALLY on the term paper. The paper hurt me and I couldn't even revise or redo it. Its frustrating because she didn't work with me.
SO boring & participation matters! I'm so glad her class was online this sem due to COVID. I couldn't imagine sitting in her class 3x a week for 50 minutes. She gives 10 annoying case study assignments throughout the semester. She complains about students looking up answers online and plagiarizing every sem but yet she's so lazy to change the Q's!!
Her lectures are interesting, and she's very engaging. She truly cares about her students and will make every effort to accommodate you if you have a problem. Her tests are a bit difficult, but the few papers were easy. She's patient, kind, and students in her class tend to bond. Quality professor
She is a great lecturer and really engaging. I loved going to each lecture; she always was organized/ clear about when things were due. I took two classes with her. You have to write a paper but she doesnt grade im a super difficult manor. Overall, her classes are interesting and worth taking. she is one of the best professor in the department.
hasnt provided a single piece of feedback. I have never had a worse experience of a teacher. she makes you want to pull your hair out. there are 0 drop boxes for assignment and she never reminds you of due dates. you email her all of your assignments which she loses a lot bc she teaches other classes. she has taught me literally nothing but anger
Loved her lectures and there are really only 3 assignments to do. 2 exams and the final is cumulative but focused on the most recent material and she does have a participation grade. She also gives a chance for extra credit which is really easy to earn. Literally just show up and do the work and you'll pass.
Dr. Schachner is a fabulous professor. The assignments are not difficult, just do them. There is a group assignment that was only difficult because not everyone in the group willingly participated. Attendance is important and part of your grade. The exams can be difficult if you do not show up to class. I would take her again and recommend her!
There's a case study about every week to do, but it's really simple and doesn't take a lot of time to do. 2 exams + a final, and participation is also graded. Her lectures are great and she gives extra credit opportunities.
There's a weekly assignment that isn't hard to do. 2 exams and a final. There's also a group project which is just a presentation and a short essay. Also, you don't really need the textbook as long as you show up to lectures.
I enjoy how she lectures its straight to the point but I feel like transitions between different theories and subjects are difficult to follow. she is a perfectly fine professor but I don't really look forward to the class.
Fascinating lectures and worthwhile assignments. I found learning about hate to be upsetting, but this class should be required for anyone wanting to work with others. Exams are in person, curved, and study guides are offered weeks in advance. Lectures can be accessed from home. The class is well organized and the prof wants you to succeed 10/10
I personally didn't enjoy this class it felt like she contradicted herself a lot and gave off a pretentious vibe. she's a really tough grader and will take off points for really small things. I hear a lot of her classes feel meaningless like this one did. consider other professors.
Dory's class was very straightforward and to the point which was nice, as I appreciate an organized and clear class. As someone who isn't a PSYC major, this class was hard, but not horrible. Dory optimistically cares about your success, but isn't as personable as other teachers. She is a solid choice for a PSYC class.
Although you are graded on attendance, her lectures are just reciting the slides you can access all semester therefore if you miss classes you will be fine. Very clear on what she grades and what content is needed on the papers. Due to her reciting exactly what is on the slides, the lectures are very boring.
Good GE class that is not boring. If you are interested in the topic then you will be good, otherwise it's a fairly simple class. Few assignments and the exams are easy if you attended lectures. Dory also likes what she does and will answer your questions. Recommended.
lectures are basically just the slides that are already put online.
Definitely do not take this course online. The content was alright but presented boringly. The exams are ROUGH, even though she curves it seriously keep up with the material or you will not pass. She's also a harsh grader so not a class you can bs through. Overall avoid it if you need a chill elective.
Not homework heavy; there are tests but if you pay attention to class and attend, very easy to pass. The professor is very insightful, and I enjoyed this class.
Dr. Dory Schachner is very concise when delivering lecture material, but I found that most of the time she just read off the slides. The content was very interesting, but found we covered a lot in one 50-minute class, kindahard to keep up. Small group discussions in class, as well as issue briefs due every Friday. Exams and papers are easy enough.
(-)Lectures were somewhat monotonous, there was no point in taking the notes because her slides had practically all the information. (+)She gave clear directions on what needed to be done and was accessible outside of the classroom. She would curve the grades on the tests and wanted her students to succeed.
Not too sociable outside the classroom, but was super nice! She gives out up to 3% points of extra credit. There's one assignment per week with 3 exams and one final paper. Attend class and take notes and the you will pass the exams. She is super knowledgeable and I would take her again.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. Professor Schachner wants all her students to succeed! A free textbook was provided. Every Friday there are a 1-4 questions we need to answer that is either based on lectures, readings, or videos that week. There is a term paper at the end which was fairly easy. Definitely take her class!
Dr. Schachner is truly remarkable when it comes to lectures, they are easy to understand, fun and pretty engaging. Besides that, she is a very sociable and genuinely kind person. 10/10 in my books.
She is the best! Just take the class! super easy homework, exams are easy, and the lectures are always so interesting.
Professor Schachner is available and willing to help with any challenges. The class covers important information and is broken down in ways that make it understandable. If you get the chance, take her class. The homework is not difficult, and you will be better off after the class.
She's insane cracks down on AI then doesn't even read the 4 page papers she assigns and only grades on citations not content, absolute lunatic -KR
dr. schachner is a great prof ! she's very concise with her lectures and goes about touchy subjects in a sensitive way. the exams are very application based but the question set assignments were very easy. the lectures can be a bit boring sometimes, and although attendance isn't mandatory you are graded on participation every week so
