Smart person, decent professor. Displays expertise, but not enthusiasm for the material she is teaching.
Excellent teacher. Really smart.
She reminds me of a high school teacher. I expected more than I should have after hearing bad things about her. The class isn't bad, but she doesn't have the knowledge/enthusiasm of most profs.
Makes class interesting, sometimes hard to follow because she's a little goofy. Degrades herself and talks about beer too much but other than that, not a bad teacher.
Good teacher. I found class entertaining but still useful.
dottie is very sarcastic, but if she likes you, things are good for you
Dottie is great. A very fun personality and quirky sense of humor.
She is enthusiastic in he own sarcastic way. The subject matter itself is pretty boring, but she tries to make it not so, and tries to connect it with things that college students can identify with- like parties and beer. Although it wasn't the most interesting class, I learned a lot.

She's a nice person and kind of funny at times; material is boring; didn't always think she explained things as well as she could have
Reasonably difficult, especially the exams. I did learn a lot, some of which I've actually used in other classes.
Class was hard, the project is the only thing that will save your grade. Exams are so difficult!
She's a decent professor. Her lectures get pretty boring. Her tests aren't easy but aren't killer. She's pretty much middle of the road, but has a good personality.
Not bad, not great. Her tests are kind of hard and conceptually based. She's okay--talks about her kids too much.
She's a good teacher who means well. Her lectures can be a bit long but she makes jokes in class. She has a great personality, and is very approachable.
****ing annoying and mean.
nice person, class was kinda boring
Lectures were SO boring-it was almost unbearable to sit there for 1 1/2 hours. She went sooo slowly through the slides, and although she did explain things thoroughly I could not sit through her long explanations.
Clarify the homework policy in the beginning of the semester.
If you can take this class with another professor do so. She is boring and tries to make the exams as hard as she possibly can. The mean this past semester was between a 50 and 60 on each quiz or exam.
The class material isn't great, but she could have made it a little more exciting. Lectures were painful, but outside of class she was very nice and helpful. Exams were not difficult if you paid attention.
While the class did get boring at times, she was good at cracking some jokes (mainly about herself) to keep the class awake. She teaches mainly through powerpoint, but does plenty of outside explanations. Overall the class isn't that bad if you go to lectures and do the homework.
She's funny, VERY boring sleepy class. Tests are very hard if you don't study the right way, but you get 3x5 index cards for all of them, and if you study you can do very well. Class project isnt as overwhelming as it seems
Overall, a good class. She teaches well, tries to make class funny and interseting (it usually works), is clear and very helpful (in and outside of class). A LOT of info covered, so very useful.
She's a very good professor. Material is boring at times, but only if you don't get any sleep the night before. Grading was a little ridiculous and unfair, I thought. My grade was dropped a level because of attendance, which she takes a total of 5 times.
I pity the poor woman. When she cracks jokes, they aren't that funny and the students just stare at her. That being said, the class was pretty easy (AP Macro in high school was harder), and I got a good grade with minimal effort.
Her jokes are bad, yes, but she's a solid professor. Very helpful outside of class, very intelligent as well.
Class progresses very slowly, at least at first. She writes everything on the board, everything. Not sure if she gives a good foundation for following classes.
If you've never done econ before, then taking this class gives you a good foundation. She's a pretty clear teacher. But if you're really interested in Econs (possibly majoring in it), then take this class with another lecturer, because she isn't exactly the best economics brain in town and has trouble when she goes beyond the syllabus.
Dottie is very straightfoward and everything is written on the board. You are allowed notecards for all the exams so memorization is minimal in the class. However, the pace of class is dreadfully slow as Dottie repeats and re-repeats material. She is very entertaining and always willing to help.
Dottie is a very nice professor but I absoutely couldn't follow anything in class. Things progressed way too slowly for me and I stopped going to class. Be warned, although you may understand the material, she grades very difficult and looks for certain key terms!
Dotty is the best professor you can get for Macro 103B. That being said, it was the most painful class I had all semester. The material in that class is uninteresting to the point where you'll find yourself blanking out almost constantly, even though Dotty is entertaining. That course would go WAY downhill without her.
It's bad enough when you learn nothing from a professor...but it's even worse when you finish up the course with that professor knowing less about the subject than what you knew before you took it!
choke me
This class goes horrifically slow, and she repeats everything over and over again talks so slowly that it hurts your ears. Not a true intro macro course; she spends too much time on international macro and doesn't do justice to domestic macro or the AD-AS, Keynesian, and monetarist models. Stay away from this course if econ is your major.
The tests were kind of hard, but I really enjoyed the class. Dottie is very approachable outside of class and helped me master the material. I wish we'd had more time to really go through the AS-Ad model at the end of class and the policy debates, but overall it was still a good class.
Dottie can be boring, but she tries to be entertaining and often succeeds. It just is not an interesting course.
A horribly slow-paced class. Really dry subject matter, and add to that a professor who writes something on the board and rambles about it for 10 minutes in her incomprehensible eco-babble. Likes talking about beer and her kids to keep people awake, lectures on the whole boring, really strange grading policy.
"incomprehensible eco-babble" I absolutely agree! she's like a talking machine that talks as was programmed until the battery dies out at the end of class (and she finally shuts up) .. WEIRD grading/exam/test machanism ... no more comments..
She's a nice person, but lectures were dull. It really is just the material though, she has humor and picks on people (its funny though). If you can read the book and keep up with homeworks/practice problems, you should be fine. 402 is a lot easier than 401, so that should be encouraging.
She is the only professor I have ever seen who calls herself dumb. No one goes to class because it is a waste of time. I fell asleep in every lecture that I went to and managed an B+ by reading the book. Don't take her she is a waste of time.
She's alright... nice enough, cool to talk to, sincerely interested in being helpful and kind to students. Not as clear as would be desirable in lecture- certainly not as clear as her husband.
Macro. You have to go to class because she does not put important stuff on her slides. And she uses a random online website as textbook. She is so boring..at least I find it really hard to concentrate. And sometimes she says she is an idiot.....But she is nice to talk to though. She regraded our midterm to make it more stringent than the TAs.
She's nice as a human being and explains stuff quite well. I actually learned a lot in her class. But the tests were ridiculous! Questions were nothing like the homework or the useless online textbook, and she graded them in a very weird way.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Her lectures are useles. She runs through slides with no explanation whatsoever. She is oblivious to her students' comprehension of the material. Her tests are too difficult and have no relation to the class material. Aplia assignments are often unrelated as well. She also used a useless online textbook.
I know a lot of people say her tests are impossible, but really they're not if you actually go to class and pay attention (which not many people did). She's definitely quirky and very open about her personal life (sometimes a bit too much so), but she explains the material pretty clearly and is always willing to help.
Dottie is awful. Don't take this class with her. She tries to make the intro class way too hard. I had gotten a 5 on AP Macro before this class, and still have trouble. The exams don't reflect her teaching (or lack thereof) or the homeworks. The mean on our exam was 70% for the first, and 60% on the second. Intro classes are not this hard!
A dreadful nightmare would sum up this whole semester. No textbook, no resource, and no REAL help from the professor. Can't make it to lecture or concentrate on every word she says? Your toast. If you don't have hours each day to teach yourself, you cannot do well. ANYBODY taking an econ class beware this coming from a straight A student).
Bad teacher. No Textbook. All homework is online. Tests are hard. Teaches too much in class and makes things far more confusing than need be.
aplia homework was really easy and pointless which made exams seem really hard. i never went to class but still did alright, and i always got the feeling that the exams would have been much more manageable if i had ever been/paid attention to lectures. only an online textbook which was pretty useless. a stressful class, but not impossible.
We have a textbook this year and she mainly teaches the things the book covers so lectures truly are optional. She is AWFUL with giving partial credit even if you show you know what you are doing.
Prof Petersen is difficult considering the subject--intro macro. I was expecting a really easy class, and it started off that way, but got progressively more intense, and many in the class weren't attending regularly, so were caught completely off guard. Economics is my major and I had a lot of background, but found parts challenging nonetheless.
Way too hard to be intro level. I am in the humanities & wanted to learn more about econ, thinking an intro level would be approachable. NOT THE CASE. She is incredibly tough. I went to every class but I had still never seen some of the questions she put on the tests. She's a great lady & I really like her, just not her class or her teaching style.
Basically no one attends her class......what she teaches in class is completely different from what we are tested..to be honest, don't choose her classsss!!!! i should've dropped it this semester.....
You can tell she loves what she teaches, and she teaches material with clarity and good pace. She also respects the students.
The group work is tedious and unhelpful. You can simply study by reading the textbook and get better understanding of the course than attending the lecture. Her class is not recommended.
Don't take her class!!! I feel that she couldn't explain questions clearly. Just reading the textbook is more useful than her lectures. Easy online homework and useless group work during class, which makes the exams look much harder. I regret taking her class. Should have waited till next semester and take it by other professors.
Good professor, but I wasn't really fond of the constant group work
Quiz&Midterms will cover lots of materials that were never formally covered in lectures.
Quizzes are more like prior knowledge assessments - they are always based on materials that will be covered in the future. Tests are often harder than what we've learned in class
Quizzes are more like prior knowledge assessments - they are often based on materials that will be covered in the future. Tests are harder than or even irrelevant to her lecturespractice questions.
mid terms are disasters. Cover a really huge chunk of information outside the textbook. Insane number of jargons, even in midterms.
She is really bad
I got a B but she is the most incompetent teacher I have ever had.
Microeconomics with Dottie is one of the best classes you can take and can be used for either ArtSci or BSchool Econ requirements. Each semester Dottie usually allows her students to have some say in how grades will be calculated. Do yourself a favor and put emphasis on group work and participation, rather than tests.
While I don't think Dottie's lectures were the most useful, I don't think her Macro class is as bad as advertised. She is very transparent with her grading scale/criteria and generously curved the final exam. The group project was annoying at some points but if you follow the explicit instructions she gives it can be a worthwhile grade booster.
I really didn't like this class. Your grade mostly depends on your group. If you have a good group you should do fine because a third of your grade comes from group work. I am so glad this class is over. Nothing that she taught stuck.
Painful. Tried to stick to the syllabus, but gave up, and I couldn't follow along. Class time that should have been helpful but was spent w things we were never tested on, and added confusion. Team quizzes suck; if you have a bad team, individual studying/understanding will feel completely pointless. Not at all what an intro course should be.
I took APMacro prior. That being said, I love Prof Petersen and could follow along, but she moves pretty quickly and expects you to ask questions, use office hours if things aren't making sense. She makes it easy to ask questions in class and really likes when people participate. She's not the most clear in her lectures but engaging and likable.
Problems asked during class and in homework do not accurately reflect what will be asked during exams. Much of the lectures will feel and be pointless, but it's good to attend anyways.
If you study, take the practice tests, and go to lectures, you'll be fine.
Not really sure why Dottie has such low ratings on here, because she's a great prof. Yes, she can be a bit disorganized in lecture, but overall I found her class to be really interesting and not too difficult. She also gives a ton of extra credit, and I would not take any of the other reviews too seriously when deciding to take a class with her.
wierdest and craziest person ever. Mood swings x100. will not grade for years. helpless when you go for extra help. does not teach. can pass without ever showing face with basic econ knowledge.
I took her intro to macro class and got pretty much what I expected from an intro lecture class. Her lectures get boring and rambly but she tries to keep it interesting with jokes (and sometimes it's just a boring topic). Despite this, she's very caring and will definitely help you in office hours. There's also a ton of extra credit!
I took Intro to Macro with Dr. Petersen, and I would highly recommend anyone do the same! It's really helpful to go to her office hours (even if you don't have any specific questions). Her lectures are funny, and she is a very nice person. The grading is annoying (no initial grade cutoffs, so you have to compete against the rest of the class).
Professor Petersen is great. She does things in class to grab the students' attention and make the class enjoyable. Likewise, she is always available to chat and help out. I had my first econ class with her, and now I'm considering being an econ major. The course is a little slow, but after all, it is introductory. I think she's an exemplary prof.
Dottie might be nice, but her online Intro to Macro class was horribly organized and chaotic. Good luck finding resources on Canvas, that thing was like a labyrinth to navigate. She relies too much on group projects and papers, which is silly for an intro class imo. The textbook was gr8 tho. Maybe I'd take her again in person, but def not online.
Most boring class ever. Petersen is incapable of using technology. That combined with extremely boring lectures, no synchronous learning, and super easy MC tests made it an easy decision to never do the readings or watch the lectures. Sure I passed, but I didn't learn a single thing and I hated every minute of it.
You can tell Prof. Petersen really loves econ. She is so passionate about getting you excited about it, and it doesn't matter if you've never had econ before. The class is very group-project/test-based, so try to make good friends early on in the class so you aren't suck with a bad group, as it is a big part of your grade.
Very unorganized. She is a good person but the teaching is just bad to be honest.
Pretty standard lecture-style class. Quite a bit of group work, which can be pretty stressful to coordinate if unlucky. The other work isn't overwhelming. Her Canvas page can be a bit overwhelming so don't try too hard to take it all in. Just find what you need when you need it. Canvas seems to be a recent transition itself, not necessarily liked.
All notes come from lecture slides, but 20/50 minutes are spent not covering content. Watched every lecture video afterward so I could fast-forward, cutting down the time by nearly half. Prof is funny and personable, but it's a big lecture, so no real personal relationship. Lecture slides are thorough and helpful. Textbook reading not necessary.
I'm very surprised by these ratings. I wen't to class maybe four times, read her slides, and did fine on the quizzes. Super chill teacher. Class was vibes. Stop complaining freshmen and wait till you get to actually difficult classes. Then you will gain an appreciation for this course.
I enjoyed Professor Petersen's macroeconomics course. While she throws a lot of information at you in both lectures and Canvas, really you just need to know the most important concepts for the quizzes/homework. The group quizzes and country project were slightly annoying to work on, but if you stay on top of deadline it should be a piece of cake.
MacroEcon is an intro class. As such, it is a large lecture. There are times when it can be dry, but it is still a good and interesting class to take. The grade is spread out across a bunch of things, so there is a decent opportunity to get a good great. Dottie is super kind and great to talk to outside of class, so I recommend office hours.
The quizzes (especially the group quizzes) are really difficult, but if you read the lectures, you are in a good position. It honestly is not a difficult class. Dottie is disorganized, but she is always willing to help, change her grading, or give advice. It is easy to pass if you try a little.
Pretty chill teacher though the lectures are ultimately vestigial. She's a bit ditsy/bumbly but she's very warm and easy to talk to. Certainly a better choice than some of the other options for intro macro.
Professor Petersen is super laid back. She definitely likes to joke around, but her lectures can be boring at times. Intro Macro is one of the easiest courses around.
Econ 1021 was paced slower than One Piece.
Prof. Petersen is a very energetic woman and does her best to keep the class engaged with kind of boring content. However, she isn't very good at explaining the content thoroughly, things jump around a lot and seemed disorganized. I was very confused most of the time even after getting help.
Such a straightforward class, lectures could be more energetic but it's straight to the point. Grading system is well explained and getting an A is doable you just have to at least be a bit familiar with the content. My chillest class this semester.
A very kind professor who cares about her students despite teaching in a large lecture hall setting. Content can become tricky at times but if you try you'll generally receive a good grade. Lectures can seem long but you can tell that Dottie is passionate about what she does.
Very easy class and worth taking. Likable professor. EVERY assignment in this class is online and very do-able. You only need 60% of poll's answered for full attendance. The lecture's are OK but nothing spectacular. The final project isn't that bad even if only a few of the group of 8 are responsible.
Can be very wordy in her lectures, but her excitement makes them manageable. She's lovable, while boring at times. Very short HW assignments that are only graded for completion. Don't need textbook. All you need are the slides from class which she posts. Find a good group of 4 for team quizzes. Final project is a non-issue if work is split up.
Dottie is an incredible professor. This is my go-to class when recommending econ to non-econ people. Take it, you'll like it.
dottie is the GOAT. nice grading, fun lectures. you also learn alot. totally reccomend
Very kind and caring professor. Lectures can be dry though and she tends to go on tangents about things that are pretty self-explanatory. Weekly homework assignments graded on completion. Individual and team quizzes all online. No final, just a big project/presentation on investing in other countries. Lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Dottie is very passionate about economics and caring about her students. The individual quizzes are open note and untimed and the homework is graded on completion(and you don't even have to do all of it). As long as you end up with a good team for quizzes and the final project, you will do well in this class.
Skip the lectures, she says "no one gets an A without reading the textbook" but thats BS. Just learn from her slides and by googling stuff. The quizzes in 1021 carry your grade so dont throw that. You need a good group for the team quizzes and project. She gives loads of extra credit
I can't say I learned much from her lectures. Her resources posted on canvas were very helpful. She gives plenty of extra credit and is super nice. Just not a super interesting topic but does her best to keep the class engaged. A very easy class and I recommend anyone take because if you put in minimal effort you can get an A.
Make sure to have a good group for team quizzes and final project. Super easy class otherwise, would highly recommend even if you're not the most interested in economics.
If ur taking macro take it with dottie, shes the best. she made lectures v engaging and is very accessible outside the classroom too.
Would highly recommend macro with Dottie, especially coming from someone that hasn't taken an econ class before. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit, and as long as you follow the general place of the class, its pretty easy. She is also super funny and makes lectures enjoyable.
Econ isn't my thing, but the class was super easy and professor petersen was really funny and definitely cared about her students.
She was very on top of things and had lecture recordings and slides all posted on canvas, which was very nice. She also was very funny and laid back during lectures.
Really caring really nice. Just take her
She is the best! So nice and so understanding. Very reasonable assignments and quizzes + group quizzes weren't too bad. She gave us tons of time to do the final project and split it up into manageable deliverables. Only complaint would be that the canvas was hard to navigate. Usually finding the homework was harder than actually doing it.
If you want to get an easy A, take class with her!!!!
Great professor. Is always in a good mood and leads the discussions well. All materials were available on Canvas. Attendance did not matter whatsoever, the amount of extra credit she gives means you can skip all lectures and still earn a high A. Exams are all take home quizzes and are open book/notes. Very quick to respond to emails too.
Professor Petersen makes macro engaging and accessible. With multiple extra credit options, the class is manageable. Utilize Unstuck ai and the textbook to supplement her straightforward lectures.
Very passionate about what she does!!! If I had to take any Econ class, I would 100% take it with her
Cannot believe I skip all lectures but still get an A+......Attend this class with friends bc there are great amount of group works.
Dottie's class is really interesting. She makes office hours very accessible. If you have a willingness to learn, you can get a lot out of this class.
