She was not helpful in clarifying things at all and she would talk in circle if you asked questions or simply say she didn't know and that she would look into it and it was just quite annoying She was a really nice and good person but teaching wise she fell quite short!!
I felt she was an awesome profressor. She lectured her material well and she cares enough to take time to help anyone out. Her exams are exactly on her lecture and book material. If you study you will do well.
Another professor that might have ADD. Screams through as many notes as she can during lecture and allows no time for questions, you will have NO idea whats on the test, therefore if you want to do well you must memorize EVERYTHING. Very frustrating, had to teach myself type of class. thank god I didn't have her for lab
She was an excellent teacher! Very knowledgable of the subject and willing to clarify any material you may be confused on. If you need help, she is great to talk to. Very willing to help anyone. Tests are on her notes, and a little in the book. You have to show up to do good. Excellent teacher!
Lecture is totally worthless, to get a good grade just read the book and know everything in it. Her lectures will not sufficently prepare you for her tests. She loves the subject though and you can tell just by looking at her. Shes a little bit of a science nerd.
Very enthusiastic about Biology! Takes time to answer questions and always follows up if she doesn't have the answer immediately. Wants you to enjoy the material too. Highly recommended.
One of the BEST Biol professors i hve ever had so far, she explains everything in a really good way so everyone underestand. Very easy exams all straight from the notes and easy wording(not tricky). She creates a curve after each exam so if get an 80 u will have an A insted of a B. Very helpful and kind. Highly recommended!!!
Dotty is a very enthusiastic lecturer, but lectures can get slightly confusing at times. Reading the book is necessary to survive the class. The tests are really difficult so plan on studying or you won't pass. She is extremely willing to help students out, though.
She LOVES biology! She talks fast and you NEED to take notes. No homework just tests and she gives hints in class about what will be on the test; most from the lecture and some from the book. She's helpful if you ask for it!
Lectures didn't really prepare me, she had a tutor give out quizzes and reviews, but they didn't really help, you just have to KNOW IT ALL
She only gave 3 midterms and a final, and that made up ur whole lecture grade! so study her lectures, remember her examples from class, and read EVERY chapter she assigns...she likes meeting with you to clear things up, and she talks really fast so take notes as quickly as they come..
She loves what she studies. Some of her tests had awkward wording, but for the most part tests were from the lectures, and not so much from the readings. Her She gave four tests and the final. This was your whole lecture grade.
You can tell she's very passionate but she just doesn't teach well. She's one of those really smart people that forget the easy steps are what made her so good. You won't survive if you don't study. You're guaranteed a fail if you don't study lecture notes.
Dotty is a very nice lady who is very passionate on what she teaches, but she does not teach/explain well. She REFERS you to the BOOK a lot. The book is teaching you instead of her teaching you. Taking class from her is okay you just have to STUDY. Grades is based off of 4 exams and a final plus lab grades.
Not a great test writer: wording can be confusing, misleading and test content felt general rather than specific, and i later found questions to have incorrect answers. Study hard for several days before the tests(read textbook and compare to notes) and you should be ok. The lab felt like a waste of time.I got an A.
She's a great teacher, obviously loves botony more, but she explains things a little too fast. Write down her notes in class then go home and read the section. then skim the next before going to class the next time. Study both, and write down all the figure numbers from lecture, these help the visual people SEE how it happens. Just STUDY.
Douglas is a good and passionate professor. Seems like she can be a little disorganized at times but thats mostly due to her writing out the notes and not using ppt. Tests are over all your notes and some of your book. Not that hard, just read the book and your notes.
Sometimes hard to read her notes. She seems scatterbrained sometimes as in she doesn't always start where she ended. Explains figures well and lets you know what is going to be on the tests. JUST STUDY and you are fine
An extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable professor that teaches from the book while utilizing layman's explanation, her own vast experience and practical examples to deliver a very effective lecture. Extremely effective at relating to the text and delivering complicated material. Great test writer.
Dr. Douglas is a very passionate and knowledgeable teacher. If you are majoring in biology you will love this class. Tests are hard but manageable. Write down everything she tells you. MEMORIZE your notes and read the chapters. Study at least one week before the test for a few hours each day. Great Class overall!
Dr. Douglas lectures in a very enthusiastic way and keeps you interested for most of the hour. She writes almost everything on a projector that I just copied down for notes to study. Most question on tests came straight off these notes. Takes some study time but not too bad.
Dotty is a super nice lady. She teaches very well! Her tests are sooo hard. She is happy when the class average is a D. MEMORIZE HER NOTES!!! and read the book
I love Dr. Douglas. She is so nice and genuinely interested in bio. Her notes are clear and tests are not hard as long as you just try a little. This class is not for someone who just needs a science lab. Go take Bio 101 for that
Dr. Douglas is a great instructor. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what she teaches. Her tests are challenging but as long as you come to class, take notes, and read the book, you will be just fine.
Dotty is a great teacher because she is truly passionate about what she teaches. She rushes through stuff so it can get confusing but if you simply take notes and study them each day, up will find that the tests aren't too bad. My lab was what kept me from an A. I recommend her
Went to class everyday and still had a hard time with her class. VERY HARD. She's nice though.
Her love for biology is very obvious during her lectures. But this causes her to talk realy quickly which can get really confunsing. She talks fast so right fast, study HARD or your grade will reflect it. Overall good teacher.
Knows what she is talking about and is passionate about it. Take perfect notes and STUDY. If you even miss just one lecture, it could cause you to miss like 5+ questions on the test. If you're gone, get notes from someone else.
Couldn't agree more with others on her passion for the subject. Truly is contagious. She is a rather fast lecturer, however she is very much available outside of lecture to go over anything you might be confused on. As others have said... study lecture notes and definitely show up for class.
Good overall. Her tests are mostly from the lectures with a around five questions from the text which she hints at if you pay attention. Focus on studying the lecture notes a week or more before a test. Test difficulty comes from how she words questions.
I love Dotty! She's a great lecturer and very passionate about what she's teaching. Her tests are pretty hard so it is important that you go to lecture and review your notes (and the book!).
She was amazing! the lectures were interesting! nothing comes from the book!! just study lectures
Tests were ridiculously hard.
Her lectures are very important and packed of information, and although you don't have to attend class, I highly recommend that you do. If you ever have questions she is really kind and helpful. Her tests are HARD so start studying early. Overall I liked her a lot though
Dotty is an awesome teacher, definitely knows her stuff! She grins during all of her lectures because she just LOVES biology so much, which makes her a great teacher. She's extremely helpful. Tests are difficult, start studying early, and also look through the book a little because there's a few book-related questions on tests. TAKE HER CLASS!
She packs A LOT into the morning lectures sometimes 2 chapters in one sitting. Its very difficult to tell what will be on the exams. There are study groups but they do not help much. Attend lecture and read and you will pass w/o any problems.
This is not an easy class to get an A in unless you dedicate your life to it. If you go to lecture, go through your notes a few times before tests, and get a good grade in lab you will at pass with a high c, low b. I did find the tests quite difficult, but overall I did like her as a teacher.
Dotty is EXTREMELY passionate about the subject, which makes lectures good, but unclear at times.GO TO CLASS.If you don't go,you probably won't pass.Almost everything comes from her lecture notes.Tests aren't difficult when you learn how to study for them.Go to the study groups! They give study guides.Do those, and you'll get at least a B on the test.
I did not understand bio or have an interest for it before this class, but now I do. I have learned so much, she makes it interesting! GO TO CLASS! STUDY STUDY STUDY your notes continually and you'll do fine.
This lady loves Biology. She knows what she's talking about and if she doesn't will tell you exactly where to go to find out. Lectures are interesting and she keeps it moving. Difficult but definitely manageable.
Dotty loves this subject. She tries hard to explain things well in lecture, however her notes are a little difficult to follow. Definitely need to read book to do well tests. Would take another course from her.
Exams are from lecture notes, often the book is more or less relevant so you need to have been in the lecture. Lectures were interesting, engaging and informative, she writes everything on the overhead-if you are following along you won't miss a thing and will do well on exams. Sometimes she tests on things not in the book only covered in lecture.
It's a hard class but I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. Go to class and TAKE GOOD NOTES!! For the test don't even worry about the book, 90% of it will be over the notes.
Going to class is a must. She loves what she's teaching so that makes her class more engaging. However, it's really tough. The notes do not prepare you enough for the exams and the online quizzes were based off the book. As long as you have an online code to Connect Assignments a book is not needed because the code will provide for an online book.
Dotty is a really great professor. I thought she taught the material very well. Tests are not super easy, but if you have a full set of notes from her lectures to study from you'll do really well. I only ever used the book for the online homework.
I love her class although it is very fast paced and it is a class where you have to be sure to read the book along with the lecture.
Dotty is an extremely good lecturer. She doesn't go to fast or to slow, she keeps things interesting, and she takes notes in the front of class so you know what to write down. The assignments and tests are hard. Read the book for the assignments, and STUDY YOUR NOTES for the tests.
She is a great professor. If you don't have a strong biology background the class might be really hard for you. Go to all the lectures because the tests are exactly what we learned in lecture.
This was by far the hardest but most interesting science class I have taken. She is a good lecturer, brings in cool stuff to see, and is very passionate about what she does. Go to class, or you won't pass her tests. Study your notes as those are what the tests are based around and you will need to actually read the book as well.
Dotty is a truly fantastic professor. She knew just how to keep the class engaged with lecture material. She really really loves biology and her enthusiasm makes the class that much better. Her tests and homework (at least for honors) are fairly tough, so show up, take good notes, and read your book. I would definitely take another class from her!
I am someone who really hates science, so I was really nervous... However, she is so cool! I didn't understand anything out of the book but her lectures were really great and I had almost no trouble understanding that. On top of that she is just a sweet lady so excited about plants. Lecture based with some online book stuff.
She is a truly awesome teacher and I wish she taught 192. She's so enthusiastic about biology, plants especially. Attendance is not "mandatory" but you will regret missing any classes if you have no one to send you notes because tests are based a whole lot on lectures. Attend the learning assistant sessions, those help more than I can say!
Dotty was a fantastic biology teacher. She brought a lot of energy and excitement to the class. Tests were quite challenging and required a lot of studying. Go to the LA sessions for sure. Even though this class was difficult, I loved it and would love taking another class from Dotty.
Her lecture revolves around writing her notes during class while using the overhead (and she's super fast, sometimes I can't read her hand writing), me personally I don't like that (I'm slow, can't listen while writing), so if your like me this professor not for u. Also, really hard test, really gotta prepare. Helpfulness? not that awesome.
Go to class and take notes. Her test are 90% straight out of the notes, word for word. When she says "read about ____ in the book" that means read it .It'll be a test question. Straight forward.
Dotty is a really nice lady and will help you out if you go to office hours, ask questions, and participate. READ THE BOOK. Tests are difficult and extremely textbook heavy. Lectures are kinda dull but it's general bio so what do you expect
She's great with her lectures. Multiple choice tests. She is pretty difficult for someone who has never had a hard professor or teacher.
She was not a helpful teacher. She writes all her notes right there in class and talks too quickly. Will only write down a few words on the notes also so you HAVE to keep up with her talking. She refuses to give you any help before tests. Goes at a much faster pace than all other teachers. Tests are hard and confusing, lacks info from lectures.
She is a great professor. If you slack off, don't show up, and just don't ask for help you won't succeed. The saving grace were her office hours. I would recommend if you are struggling to go to the Learning Assistant hours, or her office hours.. shes great at one on one and really willing to help. Also, do the homework!!!!!
Tests are tough. READ THE BOOK. Go to LA sessions. When taking the tests I circled my answers on the test&was able to check my grade before it was posted because she posts an answer key. I had a D/F, but started doing the things listed above&finished with a C+. Lab grade is combined with lecture, so you fail 1 you fail the other&have to retake both
This class is out of control hard. Although she's a good lecturer, the tests are basically designed to trick you. Take it from the other lecturer if this class is required. My class average was D while the other lecture averaged a B. Same material, but different tests.
Go to every class, take notes, read the few parts of the book she asks you to and you will pass. Her exams are 100% from the lectures so if you have good notes and study them you will be alright. If you are not a fast writer you can record the lectures. She is very passionate about biology and will bring stuff like plants or articles for you to see
Dotty is a great choice for Bio 191. She goes over the material in real time every lecture by writing down notes via projector. The book was very important: before each lecture I read the corresponding chapter. She understands that Bio can be a hard subject, so she curves the tests a lot. Was passionate about the material and open to questions.
Do what you can to not take this professor. Her lectures are boring and so dry. The book is heavy material and the lectures don't help. The tests are a nightmare. She curves grades tremendously because of how bad the class does. DO NOT TAKE
Dotty is passionate about Biology, specifically ecology. Study all the notes for tests, and remember the examples from lecture. Take good notes and the book isn't necessary. Her tests were always graded by the next class. She gave 4 midterms and then the final. I wish she taught Bio 192, I would take her class again.
Be prepared to work for this class. It's an intro course covering A LOT of different material and it moves quick. Go to lectures, take notes, and study for tests. If you don't come to lecture, you won't do well in this course; the tests are curved. You will use the textbook for homework! Very passionate about what she does and a really nice lady.
Can't miss even one class, because everything will be on test, and she will call on you in class even without hand raised.
Does her lectures by writing on slides that are projected. She is very consistent with her pace and easy to follow along with. The tests are mostly off the lectures with about 10-20% coming from the textbook.
Makes it difficult to succeed. Says heavy note-taking & rereading is proven an ineffective study method, yet only option is taking very detailed notes for every lecture, and memorize the book. Does NOT: post lecture notes, allow review of ch. quizzes, post study guides. "Average test score is a D", she says cavalierly. Great for read/write learner
Great professor, super nice and clear on much of the content. She is easy to learn from and a good person. Class had barley any homework, so our grade was pretty much just our tests. Tests were extremely hard, mix of multiple choice and short answer type questions. Had to know everything from lecture and book. Learned a lot though.
I feel like I learned a lot in this class but it was definitely one of the harder courses I have taken so far as far as tests go.
Few assignments, grade based on tests. Doesn't curve test grades and is very hard.
Good luck. Shes nice and cares about bio but's creepy and weird to be in lecture with. Be at every class because you cover lots every time and 95% of your grade comes from exams which are ridiculously hard and dont stay true to what she teaches for the most part. Avg test scores are about 65% and she doesn't curve or do extra credit. Learn lots tho
Lecture, book notes, paying attention, etc. It did not help. I attended class every day, I took notes on the book and lecture, and I studied for her exams. Despite my efforts, her exams did not match her lecture or book what so ever. This made it extremely hard to do well in her class. As in it was literally impossible to do well in her class!
This class is a lot of work but you will learn a lot. Your grade is mostly based on your 4 exams and your final exam with a small portion being homework points and lab points.
I loved this class! The way she does notes really worked for me. I enjoyed talking to her in office hours. The LA sessions are a must to go to to pass this class.
Great teacher. Lots of examples using plants
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! hardest class Ive taken. Her test do not match the lecture or homework at all. Would recommend going to the LA sessions but still isnt much help. Your grade is based on the 4 tests and the final and there is little hw that helps boost your grade.
Dr. Douglas gives great lectures. She is super passionate about biology, so her class is never boring. She can be funny and quirky too. Overall great teacher. I wish all my science profs were like her.
Gives extra credit randomly throughout the semester. Dotty is a sweetheart who cares about your grade and gives good lectures. Easy to follow, clear, and goes slow enough to copy notes in real time. Even though lectures aren't required, if you don't go you won't pass. 100% recommend this class!
Dotty is so caring and LOVES biology. She cares about you as a student and makes herself available for anything. She takes notes with you so she doesn't go too fast and it is great. Her tests are worth a lot but her LA makes things possible. If I could have Dotty for every science I would. HIGHLY SUGGEST
Dotty is literally the best. Any bad reviews on here are from people that are salty that they did not get an A. This class is hard, but Dotty cares and does an amazing job of teaching. Would not hesitate to take another class with her.
Dotty was a super nice lady. I had her class M/W/F from 9-9:50am. All the lectures were recorded so I never went. I did cram for each of the tests and I would recommend going to the LA sessions. I ended up being super close to A, but she wouldn't bump me up so keep that in mind.
Dotty always provided interesting lectures and offered to answer questions after each one. The mandatory work load was very minimal, but extra reading and studying was necessary to do well in the class. Overall great professor.
Great lectures, and very informative. Records everything for later review. Tests are poorly constructed. Weekly tests go over material she hasn't covered. Quarterly tests are worse. You can't go back. All questions are multiple choice without awarding partial credit. The reviews only cover half the material on the tests, not helpful at all.
While I absolutely loved her enthusiasm and knowledge, Dotty is a very difficult professor when it comes to exams and note taking. Everything is heaviy note based and she does not provide study guides or reviews. You basically have to memorize the book. Overall it was a difficullt class and the lecture information didn't match the exams.
She was very knowledgeable but I could have gained the same knowledge by reading the textbook cover to cover. She was definitely not used to doing online classes and would show examples of the topic on camera and then talk about how normally she would have us feel it or smell it even though we were on zoom. She was also very lecture heavy.
These bolded statement "true" questions are the pits and I am not sure how she expects us to know all of this material. We have lives and it does not just revolve around school. I did not appreciate her exams and how heavy they weighed on my grade. And our homework does not accumulate to our exams at all. This is just down right wrong!! :(((((
Lectures are all over the place. She screen records herself writing notes on an iPad and the handwriting is barely legible. Questions on the exams are confusing and most questions are pulled from specific things she slightly mentions in lecture. Way too difficult for an intro class.
I genuinely believe people are rating her difficulty too high. This is the absolute best you can get for a university biology class. Just take notes, draw some rough diagrams, use Google to your advantage and you will EASILY get an A. You can even skip every lecture and just watch them later because she posts them. Dotty is a great teacher overall.
