This guy is funny! as far as i can tell so far, he is a good teacher. he put a quote from Donnie Darko on the board, and immediatly i knew we would get along. he is kind of a dork, but the whole class likes him because he is so cool.
this guy is amazing!
cool guy, but we pretty much never do anything in class. tests are full of his jokes, but can be a little tricky. never takes attendance, but sometimes gives extra credit to those who actually come to class.
I love this guy! He keeps you laughing all semester and his tests are filled with humor. You rarely have homework and the workload is not that much. It is a really fun class!
You only have 4 tests all year. Homework consists of lots of reading that will be on the tests. Great and humorous teacher. Will give help if you ask for it. There is a study session the day before every test.
Very Excellent teacher, though he may seem a little querky, you will learn lots. His TA (Wes Hauf) is also amazing
very smart, wants you to do well, no attendance, but going to class helps. No homework grades, but to get an A you need to do it. Just paying some attention in class should gurantee a C
terrible!
I loved going to this class everyday. It may not seem like you learn much, but you'd be surprised sometimes. He makes an otherwise boring subject (Economics) fun. He can seem a bit weird, but that's what makes him a cool teacher.
I LOVE THIS GUY!!! I actually look forward to going to this class. He is a little weird, but that is what makes him cool. I learned a lot.
Gets off task in class, but an entertaining guy. Read the book and occassionally tune into his lectures and you'll get a solid B or A in the class.
enjoyed his lectures...i looked forward to coming to class, if u are looking for microeconomics, this is the guy to take
Well doug is an intersting person. The class seems almost pointless but you do have to read if you want to do well on his test. You either get the guy or you don't. Try him out and if ur not understanding him in the beggining then i wouldn't stay in it...
I've gotten SO many quotes from him for my website. Like, "These results end in umm...results." "I'm serious, also. I'm also serious." And, "What do we have here? That's right, a green line with a bunch of green dots.&quo
Good guy but not very productive, we only got threw five chapters; his tests and be a little hard and confusing so i suggest doing the reading and knowing the graphs. Overall though the rest of the class is a breeze.
horrible professor, will not help you at all.... he doesn't know how to
tests are hard. (he himself never makes more than 95s in his tests) interesting guy but could be offending to some. hard to tell when he changes subjects. other times hard to tell why he changed the subject.
Funny, and tries to make the subject interesting. Test are somewhat difficult. Can make a B with moderate effort
not the greatest teacher... never went to class and i made A's on all the tests. watch out for the final, it's nothing like his normal tests... it's a "real" test, not lame questions from his lectures
I think this is one of the worst teachers I've had, his lectures make no sense since he spends most of his time talking about his friend Wes Hauf that does lSD and his test are hard and very weird, nothing to do with actual econ!
Very funny if you like his style of humor. Very redundent lectures, but entertaining. Tests are hilarious and also straight forward, all you have to do is make sure to read what he assigns.
If you want to learn nothing about econ, this is the teacher for you. We have only got through 5 chapters and learned just about nothing. His tests are easy and pointless. So if you want to leave nothing and get a good grade, you want Butler.
lectures are pretty much pointless, but hes a pretty funny guy. makes jokes alot but doesnt teach too well. read and study all of the readings he assigns and it should be a pretty easy A.
i sit in class wondering why i am there. this class is ridiculous. unless you are some economics freak don't take butler
This class is so.. easy if you actually show and listen. Do the readings and you are golden. People who think he is hard either dont go or dont do the readings.
If you go to class and do the readings you will be fine. He gets a little off subject sometimes but a really funny guy. Available outside of class for help. Good class
he moves very slow and covers only main points of economics, allows you time to understand concepts--he is really funny!
He is the funniest teacher I have ever had. I am glad I took this class with him. I really am interested almost every day. He teaches more than econ. but also good ideas for life. I think that it is very easy, but I have heard people say otherwise.
His class is really easy if you pay attention and read the stuff he assigns. His lectures are repetitive and occasionally off topic, but it keeps peoples attention long enough to learn something. If you can't pass his class you're a moron...
Probably the worst teacher that I've ever had! I never understand what he talks about in class. It feels like coming to class is just a waste of time. He is very wordy and most of the times it's almost impossible to understand what he's trying to say. Don't take him!
Well, the four chapters we actually covered all semester weren't too bad- tests are just very tricky. Lectures are usually random and it's hard to follow him and his messy scribble all over the board. I defeinitely wasn't impressed with him.
If you have had ANY economics before, you'll be ok. His lectures are off topic, random, and really make you wonder why you took time out of your day to listen. His test are hard, but if you study an A is possible. DO THE READING-even the random things that hav nothing to do with econ!
Funny guy. Pay attention and you will be fine. I liked him.
Seriously, what is the deal with people giving Butler low ratings? I think this guy is awesome. The tests aren't bad if you read and he talks about alcohol in all his classes. It really isn't that hard if you go to the review sessions, and his stupid jokes are actually funny.
easiest micro prof here, go to class read the handouts, easy B, work a little bit harder to get an A
great class, funny guy!!, easy.dont neglect the readings, and listen and you got it made.tests are a bit tricky
This is a very easy class if you follow directions. Simply attend the lectures and DO THE READINGS he assigned and you're on your way to an easy A. Plus, he's hilarious!
Lectures are so off the wall you wonder what the heck any of it has to do with econ. Tests are somewhat hard so just do the Readings and study from the text book and you should be fine. Most lectures consist of him rambling on about beer and his friend who did lsd...he'll make you laugh for sure!!
he was a very funny guy, the lectures may have been a little random but it made you want to go to class and learn. Good teacher
very random, not much intellectual stimulation. he does play some cool videos.
Very easy, read the stuff he tells you to and you will be fine.
funny teacher, but i didn't understand what he weas talking about. i attended class, did the readings, but still did really bad on the tests. unless you're a micro genius and already know what's going on, don't expect to get good explanations.
What's up with the low ratings? His class is so awesome because attendance never counts, there isn't any graded homework, and he goes on tirades about government policies. If you need a teacher to explain micro-economic theory to you then you don't deserve to go to college, perhaps even exist.
Funny guy makes jokes all the time, even if you don't understand em, Very laid back and likes to talk about current events. No homework, attendance is optional, just do the readings and you'll do fine
Very funny and laid back...no homework.
Funny guy, very random. If you can take structured notes in an unstructured class, go for it, easy if you read.
Hilarious guy, class is worth it just to hear him talk. do the readings he gives you and read the armchair book.
Really easy and very funny. I recommend him.
Is getting paid to goof off. That's all this class is. Goofing off three hours a week. If you want to have a blow off and not learn, take him. If you want to learn, take someone else.
His ramblings made it hard for me to follow. If you're a visual learner, it's a nightmare!
horrible teacher!!! avoid this class at all costs!! unless you already have taken micro and know everything about it and like study sessions that go like this "any questions?" and that is all that will go on in the study sessions doesn't review you at all!! and there is ALOT of reading!!!!!!!!!!
I made an A in this class with no problem. He is a very nice guy. I agree with what was said below, if you don't understand micro theory, you need not to be in college. I just loved all the greek people that would walk in talking about how **** they got during the weekend and then act shocked when they failed the tests. It was sooo funny!!!
He is an excellent teacher. He will go out of his way to help you and puts a lot of effort into teaching the class. You learn a lot and if you work hard and do all of the required readings you have the potential to get an A. I would take another class by him if I had the opportunity.
Hilarious guy! Actually made micro interesting... aside from the 3 weeks it took to get our predominantly hungover class to understand the concept of supply and demand. Easy easy A though for anyone who shows up and does the minimal reading. Very entertaining.

I dont know how anyone could say this class is easy. Butler just rambles incoherently about nothing. His tests are really hard because they call for perfect recollection of readings and movies shown in class. I don't miss class and I am a good student but I still have a C.
I thought the class was rather easy. He was funny and even wrote on the wall once! You do have to study a little bit, but he has review sessions to go over all the problems he assigned. The tests aren't that hard if you read the readings he e-mails you.
not a great class, but a passible one. he's really boring, has no book, and will put questions on the tests that he didn't teach you just to make sure no one gets 100%. he's a nice guy and all but you can't really prepare a whole lot for the tests
Don't take him. Yeah he's kind of entertaining but he falls asleep in his class more than his students do. His tests seem to come out of no where but if you at least do the reading, you'll pass. If you learn visually, good luck, all of his graphs look the same. He did a nice drawing of the Wal-Mart parking lot once though. I didn't learn a thing.
Do not take this class!! He doesn't treat it like an intro course, and when the test grades are low he doesn't think that it's even partially because of his teaching methods or the way he writes the tests. He doesn't teach the way he tests at all. The tests are harder than you expect them to be after the lectures he gives.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He's awful, he's not funny even though the class laughs at him, and he is not a good teacher. The tests come from now where and I so amazingly hard. Don't take it I promise. Even if you read, take notes, go to class, a B Is still as good as I have ever gotten on a test.
This is an easy class. The tests are mostly based on the readings, which are short and easy. Sometimes it helps to go to class, but if you miss one every week you could still get an A. I didn't do any reading until a day or two before the test and I got an A on every test after the curve(he curves a lot). Not a bad class at all.
he doesn't teach well at all, just tends to ramble on during lectures. you can get away w/ skipping a lot of his classes, but just make sure to go through all of the readings to do well on the tests, they can be pretty hard if you dont fully understand the concepts
Taking Survey of Theatre was harder than this class. Take it with Butler, and this will be the easiest class you ever took. He is fun, the material is really easy and the book is for idiots.
It's a pretty easy A if you listen to what he has to say. He takes his outside readings seriously because he will throw a few questions from them. He is a really nice guy that wants his students to do well, but people think that not going to class and not paying attention is going to get them a good grade when all they are doing is being foolish.
If you read what he tells you to and pay attention to him telling you the same thing over and over in class, then it is an easy A. He makes it interesting and drills it into your head. Good about responding to e-mails and funny. Weird, but open/funny in class. Offers review sessions before tests.
Public Finance w/D. Butler = easy! If you take good lecture notes and half read the books, there's no reason not to get an A. Everything you learn is pretty valuable information whether or not you are an econ major. If you're stuck, ask...he's very willing to help and even hold review sessions before tests, if requested. Highly recommend.
I get so confused from his lectures. All the examples are focused on drugs and alcohol which get confusing. Your entire grade is from tests which sucks! Wouldnt suggest him. Ya he is funny but he never helps you out. I have to email him about 6 times before he responds to me.
Funny guy! He should be in comedy central! His classes are interesting and he actually makes you love his class. There are not many readings at all and the exams are based on them. It is pretty easy class and A is relatively easy to get. He likes coffee and saying jokes! If you take this class, choose him
He's a really, really funny and odd guy. He cracks me up all the time. He definitely keeps you entertained and you actually learn economics, which is suprising. I highly recommend him. Definitely utilize his office hours!
Funniest guy ever!.. I had him for intermediate micro and got a B in it. Definetely go to class, and study! He is disorganized, always late, never answers e-mails, and loves to ride his bike. He is OK teaching, however his sense of humour makes the class great. Getting an A in this class is veery hard. so if you know your sh*t, take this class.
out of all the economic teachers at TCU you need to take Doug Butler. yes, the material is hard but no other teacher presents it better than him. uses examples that are easy to remember and very funny. class attendance is a must if you want to get an A; a B is easy to get if you sometimes go but study a lot. highly recommend
Good teacher. Hes a pretty funny guy and makes class enjoyable.
very smart guy that will take the time to help you out whenever you'd like, be focused during class because he'll go crazy sometimes but explains everything extremely well.
Go in and care about the class. He really appreciates it and will help you if you want it.
I learned somethings, he is really funny and pretty easy going on grades
Butler is a good teacher. Attendance is key if you want to make an A. There is a decent amount of reading you have to do but its pretty simple stuff and he gives a ton of examples in class to explain the different concepts. Overall is think he was so so. I made a B but thats only because I had a hard time concentrating in class.
Easiest econ class at TCU. He's kind of annoying and tells way to many lame jokes which is mainly why i skipped class so much. As long as you read the chapters he assigns and the NUMEROUS articles he e-mails, you'll be fine.
VERY EASY A! Go to class and get involved with the lectures. Read the book and you'll do great. I got high B's on the first two test and a 97 and 100 on the last two. Take him!
Doug is one of the best professors I have had. His lectures are a bit off the wall, but if you are patient and stick with it they will make sense and actually clarify his points. If you don't, you're an idiot. I learned a lot and still use the books he assigned for references.
He is so funny!
Funny guy.
He is so funny. Dry sense of humor but keeps class entertaining. If you get the review from previous people taken the class..you'll pass. I've gotten A's on all my test and have no interest in economics. No quizes or homework. Has taken attendance randomly two times. Great professor!
he's a cool guy but his teaching method is not good at all. his tests are tricky and its not an easy a but you can def. pass with a b
Butler is definately an interesting character. His lectures are all over the board and are kind of confusing. Most people don't show up to class except for exams. Exams are meant to trick you, so pay attention in class. He'll send out a review before the exams. You probably have to take him if you're a Business major, so just pay close attention!
He is very knowledgable about economics but doesnt have the best teaching method. Class is mainly just listening to him talk. He is a pretty funny guy and makes class entertaining. Tests arent that hard as long as you have read and studied.
He is definitely a character. You never know what you are going to get when you come to class. A lot of people stopped showing up because the lectures usually veer off the topic of economics quickly. It can be helpful to attend class though. The most important thing is to READ.
I don't understand how you couldn't get an A in this guys class. You would have to seriously not care about school. I got As on all of his tests. All you have to do is the assigned reading (which isn't much) and be awake during class. He made Micro feel like basic college algebra. He also quotes Animal House and The Big Lebowski in class.
Worst teacher ever! Going to class is completely useless. He shows up 10 to 15 minutes late to every class period. He never has his stuff together. When he does teach, its a sea at best. He is completely flaky! He has a habit of sending you 5 to 6 page articles that you'll need to read and memorize 1 hour to 30ins before the test.
He's hilarious. Easy class. Doesn't teach anything in class, but if you read on your own you'll make a high B or A. Take Butler!
Took him because I heard he is easy-he is in some aspects b/c attendance is not mandatory. He gives extra credit for going to class on fridays. Reading is pretty light and easy-but tests are worded very witty/tricky so you end up making mostly B's-A's if you are lucky. Good class though
He definitely kept my interest! I have taken a micro class before, so it was somewhat painful to sit through his slow pace. Tests were still difficult because of his odd and strangely-worded questions, but he doesn't cover much information. He is very entertaining and wants everyone to do well; I had a great time in his class.
He's very entertaining and goofy in class, doesnt really teach much, but as long as you do the readings outside of class it's easy to make an A. Plus he's a lot better than all the other teacher for Micro.
Awesome teacher, does not cover a lot in class so you don't need to go, but he's really entertaining and funny, easy if you read what he tells you, take him
Funny guy but going to class is pretty pointless. If you do the reading and go to the reviews you should be fine. He seems to talk in circles most of the time but overall not a difficult class.
I actually liked this class because Dr. Butler is quirky yet keeps things relevant (for the most part). The readings and lectures weren't bad, and some stuff from the lectures ended up on the test. I went to every class, tried to keep up with the readings, and studied the study guides he sent out and got a B+ (a few decimal points away from an A)
He is a really nice guy, even if he's scatterbrained at times. His class is very easy though and attendance is pretty much optional. His tests are very straightforward and mostly lecture based.
Hes a very nice guy and he wants you to do well in class but the only grades you have are the tests. He takes alot of questions from lecture and the two shorter books, not the main textbook. Going to office hours wont help and neither will memorizing. you just have to really understand economics bc his questions are analytical.
Haha. Oh Butler. He's an extremely goofy guy. Really smart, but very scatter brained. Lectures are absolutely pointless. I only went so he knew who I was, but I just got on facebook the entire time. I know a lot of people that struggled in his class, but if you do the readings and understand the concepts, it's an easy A.
Scatterbrained? Yes. Knowledgeable? YES. He may come off as a goofy guy, but my father is an Econ Professor from Cambridge and sat in on one of his classes. After the class he said "Refreshing, he makes even the most mundane information interesting, splendid professor." I agree with my dad.
Great teacher. Makes the class interesting, will give help outside the class if needed and takes an interest in your success.
Those who know anything about Econ will get through with flying colors. Those who don't should pay a little attention. Although, some of the outside reading occasionally appears on tests, so be careful about that.
Professor Butler is the best. He's a pretty funny guy, who uses a lot of applicable and easy to understand examples to teach concepts. An awesome choice for Econ. Tests are pretty easy if you do the problems he suggests in the book and show up to class.
Butler is a crazy, he puts instant coffee mix in his coffee! He tells a story about a guy who lived in Alabama and used barter as his only means of exchange...we think that was actually him. You read wild articles, and makes witty jokes that are really funny, but only if you get the reference. Ended up with A- in the class
Butler is a character and a half! I took him for intro to Micro and it was a difficult class but he made it interesting. I thought he was really funny and I enjoyed the class even though it was challenging for me. Some people get easy As in his class and others, like me, have some issues. But I would take him again, just make sure to do the rdngs
Butler is a very funny guy, but beware if you do not have a pretty good understanding of economics. I did not. I struggled in this class even though I attended all classes. DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A BLOW OFF CLASS. I took this class P/NC (as a business major) and passed easily, but still put a lot of effort into studying/learning.
He is a character but the class is not exactly a blow off class. Definitely an easier econ teacher though
Dr Butler is super quirky but hes hilarious. I didnt really pay attention to lectures and he doesnt really take attendance. If you do his study guides, read the book, and go to office hours he'll like you will do well.
He is great! Very funny! Class is pretty easy just read the articles he posts onilne
Dr. Butler is hysterically funny, usually twisting economic concepts into amusing anecdotes to make his point. He's great at explaining exactly how economics can be seen and applied in real life. He can be a bit scatterbrained at times, but there's nothing on the tests he doesn't go over extensively in class and hardly any homework.
Butler is hilarious and if you enjoy sarcastic humor you will love him. Attendance isn't mandatory and lectures can get boring as he sometime tends to go on random tangents about nothing, but he rewards those who show up by putting stuff on tests only people who attended class would know. Make sure to read articles he posts online before tests!
Attendance isn't exactly mandatory but his tests are based heavily on lectures. He is really funny and explains things well.
Hilarious professor. Show up to class because his tests are written the way he thinks and that can be really key to understanding what he's asking you to do. If you do the outside work he provides (which is not mandatory or graded), you will do well on the tests.
DB is the funniest professor I've ever taken. One day, we learned about tradeoffs & substitution by watching an episode of "Bizarre Foods" where a woman sold fried tarantulas. That was probably the most normal day of class. Tests are easy.
Inmd Micro - Did I learn that much about econ? No. But did I learn about myself? Yeah boy. There's no sense in trying to change Doug. Funny dude, showed the Bizarre Foods video again, tests are literally just his lectures, which way overexplain simple content, but I'm not complaining. Be ready for a classic Doug tangent rant, enjoyable time lol
Professor Butler is one of the most open and charismatic professors I've ever met. He is so understanding of any situation you might have and never takes things too seriously. He may go on tangents here and there while overexplaining simple concepts, but I'd rather have that than the opposite.
The GOAT; he was my professor for Micro. He's hilarious and tries to make the class laugh. He does talk about his wife a lot, but I thought it was funny. As a teacher, it's not a hard class, but it is one of those classes where you become overconfident, get a test, and bomb it (My Experience)
A very sporadic professor who sometimes lectures all class about random things that won't be on a test, but also the *non-economic* material might also be on the test. The lectures can be quite boring as well. The class is basically graded on only 4 exams with almost no other grades, yet you won't know your grade until the end of the year anyways.
You won't know your grade until the end of the semester. His lectures are boring and are not usually focused on economics. It is a pretty easy class compared to the other professors. If you don't want to learn about econ and have to teach yourself everything butler is fine. Don't buy the other books and find the textbook online.
The class is chill and has a very light workload, your grade is mostly the 4 exams. As long as you show up everyday and read everything you're supposed to you should get an A. Doug is also super funny/nice and explains the material very well.
The class overall was easy. We covered way less material than the other micro classes along with some random history. Your entire grade is based upon 4 tests (including the final). He only took attendance and gave us homework twice which also counts for your grade. He doesn't post grades until after the final, which I have no clue what I got on.
I'd recommend. He makes the content pretty straight-forward. Some cons are he doesn't grade anything until finals week and most of the grade is based off of 4 exams. So, going into exams week, you won't know where you stand. However, I never really went to class and only studied for the exams the night before and got an A-. Pretty funny guy.
His lectures are straight forward however he can go off on tangents that aren't related. He will send out study guides that include things that are actually on the exams. I recommend attending his office hours before an exam because he will basically tell you what's on the exam. He doesn't put grades in D2L till the end of the semester.
Professor Butler's micro lectures can be hit-or-miss, but the class is pretty straightforward. Use unstuck AI and the free textbook to supplement and you'll do well.
Quirky guy who I really enjoyed having. Class is pretty straightforward if you attend lectures and actually pay attention to what he's saying. Also, be sure to read the assigned chapters from the multiple textbooks he requires (not a lot of reading) because he will put that on his exams. Lastly, keep track of your grade yourself, doesn't use D2L.
Best prof in life. Take him.
Professor Butler is one of the best professors I have had here at TCU! His lectures are interesting and thorough because of his great sense of humor. His tests are exactly like the study guide, and he is willing to meet with you outside of class if you struggle. Must take MICROECON professor at TCU!
Butler is a very nice guy, but he is insanely unorganized. He does not post grades at all, ever, and D2L is scattered everywhere. He does not really teach in class and instead goes off on tangents. He also does not respond to emails.
The most unorganized dude ever, but very aware of it. I thought he was funny, feels like you don't learn much though. Doesn't put grades in til the end, but it's not a super hard class.
went to every single class, and he consistently started lectures 10–15 minutes late in a 50-minute class. The material was disorganized, no PowerPoints, just random notes scribbled on the board. Before the exam, he handed out 12 pages of problems with absolutely no explanation. Grades were never updated, and he doesn't respond to emails. DONT TAKE
