Great teacher and couldn't be more excited to come to class. He tests on his lectures which are very easy. You have to take his class.
Doug is a great teacher. A little hard to get used to at first. He knows his stuff and seems to love it. Open for questions. I would take this class again and I am planning on taking more classes with Doug.
He is a great teacher. Doug is very funny. He knows his stuff too. If nothing else his stories are great entertainment.
Doug is cool! He's a little odd but you get used to that. It's possible early material bores him but once you get to more complicated stuff, he gets excited. His tests are easy. I don't know what the previous rater considers opinion. He tests on lectures and you get a cheat sheet, too.
This class was easy. I don't know how people can get bad grades. The labs are a breeze, there are only three 100 point tests. Most of the material is stuff you probably covered in High School just more in depth. Doug's also a very enthusiastic guy.
Horrible class. What are you people thinking when you say he is great??? Total waste of my money! I dont think i learned a thing in his class, except that doug is a teacher to stay away from if you want to learn
I loved this class. It was one of my favorite classes at Normandale.
good: Actually makes geography interesting! bad: Very inflexible, not understanding, took extra points off for no stated reason.
I missed one stupid class due to a business trip, told him in advance and he wouldn't budge. We barely used the book at all and the class was all lecture so if you missed one class you couldn't read to make it up. Needless to say I barely passed cuz I bombed the first test. He was a horrible teacher..and very boring.
jumps to much from subject to subject. Has quizzes for attendence. Homework is online and on his Normandale website, they are hard to access and sometimes not even there. Overall I would say this is an OK proffesor. He knows his stuff but is extremely unreliable and unhelpful.
This was my second class with Doug and I have to say this was harder. Part of the problem is Doug's ego. He's a little full of himself. Otherwise, his lectures are not dull and open for questions.
Unfortunatley, the other reviews for Doug are right on. Doug has an ego that gets in the way of him being an effective proffesor. He is truly arrogant and unhelpful. No room for open dialogue or questions. Also, technically the class format is not the best. I would highly recommend not taking his class.
Bad professor, don't take his class. Not helpful in or out of class. I challenged him on a point he made when class was over (in a very respectful way) and he just looked at me, shrugged his shoulders, and then turned and walked away with out another word .
I enjoyed his class. He knew his stuff and was able to explain it in ways that made sense. Not to mention you get to use a cheat sheet for the test!!
He is a dunce, but thinks he is intelligent. The scariest combination. Skip him. Find an open minded critical thinker for a teacher.
He definitely knows his stuff, and is a smart guy. He's not that bad of a teacher either. He's not overly helpful, but everything is clearly written in the syllabus. Attendance isn't mandatory, but i wouldnt advise skipping. He has you take many pop quizzes. Overall the class is easy and interesting. So take this class if you get the opportunity.
I took this class because a friend was taking it, got mad when I found out about pop quizzes (easy just used for attendance) if you are serious about school take him, if not don’t even think about it. he even says he doesn’t want people in there who don’t want to be, show up on time and pay somewhat attention you will do fine. book used overpriced
Doug is often off track, but keeps the class fun. He is very closed minded to other viewpoints and is a self proclaimed marxist. Notwithstanding all of this, he is a good instructor, and well educated (Ph.D.). He is NOT arrogant and asks his sutdents to refer to him by his first name.
Believes that "it is the government's responsibility to make people happy." Very misguided politically and brings his far left views into the classroom.
An amazing teacher. Although his political beliefs are pervasive, he is respectful to all views. he is very intelligent and brings his personal experience into the classroom. his tests are kind of hard, but if you study you shouldn?t have a problem. his mannerisms are so eloquent. omfg take his classes!!!!!! he rox
HARD EXAMS, but a great teacher. You definately have to study in this class, but his lectures are the best. Read the book. Take your own note. Don't just use his notes. He is real down to earth good 'ole boy.
Good teacher. Extremely hard tests (which is all he grades on). Kinda dull. If you have trouble staying awake in class, do not take him...
Great teacher! he made class very interesting. He is very well orgainized. He doesnt put up with coming in late, or other distracting things. I am taking anouther of his classes next semester.
OPEN NOTE TESTS!! Great instructor! Would take Doug again, for any class. Pay attention, take good notes and you'll have an easy A. Zero tolerance for late show, especially on test days--sit in front.
Physical Geog.: great teacher, very interested in the topic and tells some funny stories. don't be late- he wont let you in. lets you have a full page front and back for final- pretty easy
DOUG IS AWESOME, I would recommend his classes to anyone. He's an extremely smart person, an informative and elucidating professor, and a downright great guy. Tests are based on lectures, lecture notes are online, tests are partially open note. Don't take this as an excuse to skip lectures, you'll need to really strive to do well on tests.
He is not the best teacher, but he is an extremely nice guy. He always trys to make the class interesting, but he gets side tracked a lot! He strays from the notes and adds his own personal insight. He is really edgy, he brings up race and ethnicity a lot. He is just not the best teacher...
Takin' a few classes with him, he is tons of fun and likes to joke around, as long as you take notes and read them you will pass (you get to use notes on most tests)dont even need the text book for most of his classes! I did not use my physical geo one only the atlas book!
Urban Geog. Doug is the most interesting professor I've ever had. His lectures are very interesting and his tests are always what he lectured on. Open note tests ad no final. Doug is reasonable and fun. Definite approval.
Doug is awesome. only 4 tests, 2 papers. open note tests, no final. never used my textbook once, i regret buying it. easy class, kinda fun, really cool guy!
Make sure you go to all the labs! He is a very good teacher, tries to be funny but doesnt always work...lectures right off slides, but he also adds additional info while talking that you will sometimes need to know, mostly tests are right along with lectures and involve lab info very little. labs are fun and not very hard. i recommend this class!!
Good class, pretty interesting. If you attend class and take notes you will get an A, not a hard class to pass at all. Attendance is a large part of your grade, if you like to skip, this is not the prof. for you! Writing is graded on a yes/no basis, show thought and turn it in on time, you'll get an A on that too. Would highly recommend this class!
Doug is a total goob, in the most awesome way possible. Punctuality + attendance is mandatory, but his lectures are totally entertaining. He comes off as a hardass at first, but once you get to know him, he's great. Always go to lab, they're not hard. Didn't use text, buy the atlas + map, bring a calculator to lab if you want. Small quiz @ ea. lab.
Doug is awesome. I love his lectures, and he is very interesting. He would often bring in news articles about stuff that was happening locally. Assigns two essays that are easy perfects (just hand in on time). And two tests that you can use notes on. His tests are right out of the notes. Often talks about his experiences and relates them to class.
If you wanna learn about things that pertain to everyday life and are useful, Dougs classes are the way to do it. great lectures, funny guy.
Passionate about the material, knowledgeable, clear. Lectures were easy enough. Kind of pompous sometimes, but an easy A overall.
STRICT ON ATTENDANCE! dont bother signing up for class if you do not plan to be there on time every day. At first I hated doug, but he grew on me as my grade started to improve. tests based soley off notes and lecture, dont bother getting the book. Labs are easy as long as you show up, but beware of his quizzes. Overall, ok professor
He usually applies things to real-life occurrences which makes things more interesting. Attendance is mandatory, pop lab quizzes which usually aren't too hard, multiple choice tests with a cheat sheet front and back, can be printed off, I thought his tests were pretty hard but just study his notes, nothing is really from the book.
he is very helpful and very understanding , he is tough and his exsams sometimes are hard , but pay attention to the lucture and you can get A , he is very nice and funny and i enjoyed his class , i totaly recomand him
Show up to class, he checks attendance. Labs are easy plus you can work in large groups, so show up to labs and complete them for easy points. Review the past lab before your next lab so that you do well on the lab quiz. Exams are kind of hard, you get a cheat sheet though--fill with Doug's lecture notes. Skim through the book chpts before exams.
AVOID!!!
He really is a good teacher. And he is very good-looking
Enthusiastic teacher. Lots of things to remember assignment wise. Attendance is MANDATORY. He is energetic and not politically correct. So if you're easily offended take another course. He doesn't appreciate smart ass comments.
Doug is a great professor, and so attractive too! Take his classes!
Human Geography- great class, you must be there everyday. Copy down the notes from D2L as you can use them on the test. Tests are easy. Be mindful of formatting details on turn in assignments. He's high energy and passionate about the subject. If you're easily offended you may want to avoid, as he's not the most politically correct.
Excellent teacher, easy A if you keep on top of work. Don't sign up if you're not sure you can always attend class--he'll make you ineligible for an A if you miss more than a week of classes. Exams are open note and usually pretty easy. Rarely ever uses book, only ever opened it to get find the keywords for the chapter.
Doug is awesome!!! second time taking his class!!
The class is fairly easy and he keeps the lectures interesting.
Great teacher, just don't sign up if your unsure of how your attendance will be.
This is one of the best classes I have ever taken, really good at getting the attention ofg the entire class and relating it to interesting topics. dresses like the guy from Green Acres. Take his class, even if your not sure about it. Just make sure you have good attendence.
This is a reasonably interesting course. The teacher has a has a good sense of humor and keeps lectures interesting. You must attend and he won't let you in late.
Claycomb is an amazing teacher! If you plan on skipping class however I wouldn't recommend taking one of his classes..
Very good teacher!! I was not sure I would like the class all that much, but he incorporates life stories that help you understand the subject matters better. He is really funny and is straight to the point. He never turns down a question. Make sure to attend class even tho its not mandatory, but it helps on the tests. Fair grader, really nice
This was a very interesting course. Doug tells stories he thinks are funny. Doug won't let you in late and will kick you out for texting.
I really enjoyed this class. Doug is very knowledgeable about the subject and presents it in a way that his students can relate to easily. If you tend to skip class or tend to be late a lot I do not recommend taking this course. he does not admit students who arrive late and will kick you out if you try to do so
Easy as long as you attend MUST be on time Handwritten notes on all tests, 3 assignments total. If you miss more than 3 classes you wont get an A even if you have the points. Lecture is straight out of the book. No need to study-just attend class & copy all of his lectures in your own writing & you're golden for the test. Tests are multiple choice.
he is an amazing teacher who doesnt believe in letting students ome late and he enforces that strictly all of his test allow handwritten notes so its a good course.
Doug is hilarious! He will keep you entertained through the entire class. There is no need to worry about whether or not you will fall asleep, with Doug as your teacher... You will stay awake. I took a class of his before and he is always fun as a teacher! You must be in class though, you must be on time which helps you in the end. Take his class!
Prof is nice and funny. Makes class interesting. Have to come to class. Quizzes aren't always easy. Sometimes 10 Q's in 10 minutes, involving math or looking in an atlas. Study previous lab to do well. Exams are okay, with good notes. Reading book helps too. Use mostly his powerpoints and some of your notes for cheat sheet. No HW besides studying.
Prof. Claycomb is a nut! If you care at all about your education then you definitely need to take one of his classes. He makes learning fun. Just be prepared to show up and be awake. He will do the rest.......
Doug was a challenging teacher in all the good ways. But if you went to all his lectures and did the labs and understood them, you will be fine. You have to put in the time and work to get the good grade. If you don't understand the material, just ask. Dry sense of humor, not for everyone, but i enjoyed. I would take another class with him.
Favorite teacher at Normandale. He is the one that got me interested in geography. Love his sense of humor and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. Wish I could keep taking his classes - if you show up, pay attention, and do the work (which is minimal) I promise you'll get an A.
I really tried hard in this class, I'm actually a B average student and it's embarrassing to even admit this. Spring 2012
This is a very interesting professor and he keeps his class amused. Tests can be hard and attendance is mandatory in fact he won't even let you in late. He will dismiss you if your phone goes off. Good prof, take him
Make sure you did check your grading carefully. This professor mass up student's grading, couple times already!! And he make fun of student's name in class!!
Doug might not be for everybody but I really appreciated his grading and attendance policies. He is very knowledgeable and has fun with the material. Pay attention. Take notes. Laugh at his jokes. I took several courses of his throughout my time at NCC and loved every one.
If you're one for organization, this is the guy!! Exams are tough but fair for the most part and homework is mostly graded by effort so getting full points is fairly easy. Made me fall in love with human geography again.
Excellent professor. Had really interesting lectures - this coming from someone who normally falls asleep during those. Tough policy on attendance - don't take it if you have trouble with that. Had multiple short quizzes for this class. Looked forward to attending each class, which is a first.
He's very knowledgable, easy to understand, all tests are open book so TAKE NOTES. You can miss up to 3 classes but they are easy to attend. Two tests, 1 big project, 1 small project and a couple of pop quizzes based on lectures and the readings. But very easy to pass if you at least do the work. I never read the textbook and got an A.
He know's a lot about the subject and will help you understand the material. He has open note tests SO TAKE NOTES. His test questions are almost worded exactly like the notes. ATTENDANCE IS KEY! You only get 3 free days before you go down a letter grade.
I took this class a while back and his way of teaching is great I chose to take another class of his too in a semester later. Honestly he makes you interested in Geography with how interested in the subject he is and his way of teaching helped many students who might fall asleep in class not fall asleep, he keeps a topic that could be dull not dull
Doug is a little tough on attendance, which turns him off to some people right away, but overall he is a very knowledgable professor in both classss I took with him, U.S./Canada Geography and Human Geography. He is a funny guy who loves to tell stories and use google maps. Tests are fair, and you can expect one big paper/presentation per class.
Doug is an intelligent instructor that personally writes lectures and makes the notes available online. He's knowledgeable and teaches the content well. He give little homework, with one paper and 2 tests, which are open note. Additionally, despite having notes online, his lectures are enjoyable and packed with moments of hilarity.
His class was incredibly easy-- just show up for the 2 tests, 8 map quizzes, and do the big project and you'll get an A. However, the one thing I hated about his class was his attendance policy. Miss 6 classes and your grade gets lowered, and you can't make up anything if you miss class. You can't even be late 5 minutes-- he won't let you in.
Douglas is a goofy, likeable guy, his lectures are interesting but he has little sympathy for working students, you must be there at start of his classes or he will lock you out. Interesting teacher, lived in south America for a couple years but I would not recommend him as I felt bad for the students that would show up 2 minutes late...
The biggest reason for my low rating is that he has a bunch of fairly ridiculous policies. The class I took was only out of 150 points, with pop quizzes that could not be made up for any reason. You are locked out of class if you are late. So if you miss a 7 point quiz that is half a letter grade you cannot get back. Nice guy, bad policies.
He is my favorite teacher at Normandale and i loved his class!
Doug has been one of my favorite professors at Normandale. He is an very easy grader and he wants you to get an A in the class. We only have 2 tests throughout the semester and we are allowed to bring in our handwritten notes! He has severe ADD and gets distracted very easily
Doug is a great guy and a very entertaining professor. Attendance is a must for his classes and make sure that you take good notes! Tests are open notes and pop quizzes allow you to know what is coming on the tests. Would definitely recommend him to anybody!
Doug is an amazing professor. Easily distracted, but has a great sense of humor. Gives really good examples to help you learn & retain the material. Make sure you're on time for class! Strict attendance policy. DEFINITELY recommend.
Great class overall! quizzes, 2 essays, presentation, and 2 OPEN NOTE tests. He tells personal stories which make the class more interesting! He teaches a lot with google maps. For attendance, if you come in 5 min late he will tell you to leave and come back next time, and if you can't make it to class he will let you attend his other section!
Doug is a very great teacher and knows a lot about Human Geography, however he tends to get off topic at times. His online notes are very helpful and all of his tests are open note, so write down everything. He is also a very easy grader and doesn't have a final, but he does give pop quizzes after most lectures (they're not too bad).
If anyone finds themselves in a situation where they only have 1 day to live take Dougs class because it feels like an eternity. Lectures are very long and LOTS of information. Nice guy, but way too much information to memorize.
For this class make sure you study a lot and DON'T miss anything whether it be assignments or labs. Seriously, every little point you get in this class matters. For homework he makes online quizzes that you have a week to finish which is very nice. As long as you do as said above, you should be fine
Doug is amazing, he's funny and an excellent, very intelligent person. His attendance policy is strict, but as long as you show up on time, you'll be fine. He's sometimes easily distracted, but makes his lectures interesting. If you make an effort and are genuinely invested in his class, he'll be more than glad to help.
I took the hybrid GEOG 1101 class with Doug, so I only saw him during lab each week (which you need to be on time for, otherwise he locks you out and doesn't let you in). There are only two tests (no cumulative final exam), and you can use both sides of a sheet of paper. I wish he made study guides, though. Overall, good prof., very funny!
Doug's lectures are on everything in the book, so you won't have to read anything if you pay attention in class. Tests/quizzes are easy, and he makes lectures fun. Often goes on tangents, but always connects back to his original point. I'm taking another class with him next semester!
Really fun and really easy. Don't buy the textbook, the tests are on lecture only. Tests are also open notes so don't skip lectures, and if you're late he won't let you in. He does have some odd opinions/rants about things (my fav example is baby formulae) and comes off a bit anti-religon but overall fun and easy class.
This guy isnt AT ALL what I expected. He can be rude and like a drill sergeant at first. Once you get used to him, he can actually be a nice guy (sometimes). He WONT let you in if youre late, and he hates questions a lot of times, like youre wasting his time. Seems to hate students sometimes. Readings are really boring; class is at times also.
Not super well connected with students, and VERY strict with deadlines and grading. He is obviously insanely intelligent and you will learn a lot from his lectures. Very lecture and quiz heavy, but if you are willing to do the small amount of work and pay attention you will do well. Does not grade fast, but overall wonderful experience/teacher.
I thoroughly enjoyed my class with Doug. The class, completely online, was outlined as follows: watch lecture, read and take notes, take 4-6 minute quiz on lecture. There are 3 exams, none accumulative, which I appreciated, and one investigative essay rough draft + final on topics he provides. Deadlines are strict. He did a great job. I enjoyed.
3-4 Weekly lectures usually 30 min on avg with 2 min quizzes followed by each one 3 Qs. Quizzes could sometimes be confusing just cause of stress of the countdown. Tests were like an hour with 50 Q's kinda hard so need to study. Labs were easy tho do all the work and would get at least a B If you need it for MNTC take it proly easier than like chem
Overall good. Said online txtbook was required but I didn't open it once; waste of money. Video lectures with notes & quizzes for each Ch. Map quizzes, just label the template map & do the quiz. I rec. doing the map b4 the notes bc they correlate. Each quiz is timed which creates a lot of stress. 30min for 25 test ?s 4min for 6-10 note and map ?s
His class is relatively easy. 3-4 lectures a week, a 3-question quiz after each lecture, and a lab once every two weeks. His class is intense, but it is a routine. Take notes, and you'll be fine. He is ironically funny, too. P.S. Don't buy the textbooks, everything comes from his lectures
While the coursework was fine, the professor himself was difficult to work with. He was like a robot and had absolutely no compassion for his students at all.
I hated this class. DON'T TAKE IT unless you want to suffer
This is an MNTC class for me. The professor provides a good lecture, but if you don't listen to the entire thing, you won't do well on the quizzes and tests. To make matters worse, the quizzes are just two minutes long and contain four questions. The stress is excessive, and he shows little concern for students.
Do not take this class!!!!
You do not need the textbook; the quizzes are mostly entirely based around the lecture videos and notes. Homework heavy; 3-4 units a week and 3-4 question quiz for each unit. There are four labs over the semester; as long as you watch the videos provided and follow along, the labs are fine but tedious. Get ready to watch, read, and do tedious work.
Professor Claycomb is strict in his rules, but it lays out clear expectations. As others have said (and Doug himself), you don't need your textbook much. You will learn everything you need to know from his lecture videos and his notes. Daily quizzes (3-4 questions) due a week after. He goes on tangents that are fun. Very intelligent!
When the final lab assignment was to correct my mistakes. When I turned in my draft, he didn't tell me what was wrong. He just said look at this module. Then gave me a B. Also, the exams don't seem to be structured to get a passing grade, while the 46 quizzes are more than so easy to comprehend.
This guy does not like students, wants to be the boss and not the teacher. Zero empathy. Wants to talk and you to listen, zero discourse. Rude in emails. Gives political opinions all the time, unprofessional. LONG lectures that you must watch or you will fail- hard to watch, talks slowly, constantly messes with the camera, and makes weird noises.
Claycomb's lectures are posted on a regular schedule, and while I was personally blindsided by a lab I didn't know existed, I checked and it was in an announcement. Check your assignments often, don't miss due dates, and take a lot of notes and you'll be fine. His lectures are a bit long, but you can pretty safely 2x speed them and pause for notes.
There was a quiz every day in this class, It took about 30 mins to a 1.5 hrs each day to complete them. On top of that there was labs and tests, this class requires a lot of time and you can't fall behind or you will really struggle. He seemed nice, passionate about the topic, and knowledgeable but is very strict on deadlines.
I took one of his online courses and it was great. Real easy to stay on track. I sent him an email at the beginning of the semester and his response was super kind and upbeat. He just assigned quizzes each week and we had the whole week to do them. A paper and 3 exams too. Just stay up to date and you'll do great. I WOULD recommend!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He does not care about his students. Videos are 8 years old, he doesn't respond to emails, and has dozens of 2 minutes, 4 question quizzes that are nervewracking. Does not care that people need more time. The fact that my previous rating was removed says everything I need to know about this professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
A lot of work, but it all felt meaningful and instructions were very straight forward - I don't think I was confused on what to do once. He's very knowledgeable and his lectures are great, if a little slow. When I was crunched for time I could still get material down from his provided notes as well.
