Most likely you are going to sleep through or not go to this class. He definitely goes over more things that "You don't need to know,"than concentrating on things that you should know. His lectures are very spontaneous and not very organized at all, he's out on a limb.A study guide would be great!
Send this guy back to St.Louis
Needs to improve lectures, unclear subject matter. Speaks too quickly, and difficulted to take notes. Does not explain whats need to be known for exams.
Don't take his class. Its just not worth it. Doesn't explain clearly for an intro class, discusses topics "just for fun" when they only confuse you more. Makes NO effort to keep your attention, or to interest you in the subject. All around, bad prof for college.
Class Sucked
this is bar far the worst class that i've ever taken at western. he comments on everything and offends you every other minute. he has no idea how to teach or how to keep your attention. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. try to go somewhere else and transfer or something. he needs to be fired.
this is by far the WORST class i have ever taken!!its bad enough you have to sit there and look at his ugly beard and bad clothes but then he has the nerve when someone asks about a test to tell them hes working a fulltime job on a part time salary and is not here to answer theier ?'s...what a jerk!
Douglas Coulter wouldn't be able to teach a bee to buzz. I woke up for his 8am class three days a week just incase he threw a pop quiz. I recieved the best grade in his class but that doesn't gain him any points from me. He was only hired because his wife was... 'nuff said.
Very hard but he's a great guy and a great teacher. If you go to class most of the time and get along with him, he's awesome.

Worst prof I've had at WMU...and sounds like Kermit the Frog when he talks
Hes too smart for us.
boring as hell
this guy fricken sucks
awful teacher...so boring..rambles, long winded
You will only say hes a horrible teacher if your a twit. He does a very good job with what he has to work with. He clearly teach's the material and is willing to help. He is very knowledgable, and a well prepared.
This guy sucks at life. I once counted the number of times he said "okay" in a 30 minute time span. 106 times! I got the best grade in the class but was bored to death. It was a waste of my time and having to stare at his floppy**** and horrible beard didn't make it any better.
(I took this as part of an Honors Cluster: Mind & Body). Dr. Coulter AS A PERSON, is pleasant, knowledgeable and completely willing to be w. you at his office hrs. until 7 pm. AS A PROFESSOR, he CANNOT keep students awake! Tangents after tangents after....I lost track Go to class for the pop quizzes or to practice breathing yoga. Not for book talk.
If you are ok with teaching yourself biology and having very hard tests then he is an ok prof...personally, I thought it was very hard to stay awake in class and hate being tested over things he never even taught us...
He knows his material well, except he can't teach it to you. He gives pop quizes in class so you actually have to show up and the tests are hard. When taking notes he sits forever and talks about slides you don't need to copy but then when you actually need to write something down...forget it
he is the hardest teacher ever
If you already know everything about biology, you will like this guy. Otherwise, be ready to study the book, study guide, and notes for 5 hours and then still be confused when the test comes.
His class was easy if you went to class, all the notes were online
Doug Coulter is one of the most boring professors ever - he does not care about his students..he is very hard to get ahold of - never in his office..takes days to answer e-mails - DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A CLASS WITH HIM!!
Not a fun class. It was very difficult to stay focused on anything he said. I love biology but found myself very tempted to skip often
I hate biology, but I thought he was a pretty good guy. He gives you all the notes and he really wants the students to do well. I missed a couple in-class assignments, and he just gave me free points to make up for it b/c I had a valid reason to be gone. If you get to know him and study, I swear, the class is not bad at all.
I felt he mumbled too much. He talked over your head. At first, if you read the material, you did fine. But then not even halfway, quizzes became more harder and confusing. He did not treat it like the class it was; an intro class. I would not reccommend him.
He would go off on tangents and basically liked the sound of his own voice..I could never seem to follow what he was saying.
He knows what he's talking about, the lectures just tend to be very long and very dull. The material is fairly simple, as are the exams, it's just a rough class to sit through. If you're good in bio, you could probably handle it, but it would be hard for most people to learn a lot with his teaching style.
Dr. Coulter was an exceptional teacher. The only reason anyone would say otherwise is if they didn't go to class and missed his quizzes which resulted in a bad grade. I liked his style of teaching. He gave more than enough chances to get an A in the course. Good Job Dr. Coulter! I hope you stay around for people like me who actually want to learn.
Not too bad, not great. I never had a huge problem with him. The class isn't too bad if you study, and attend most of the lectures. There's lots of in class "quizzes", so it's good to be there for those. Also, he gives you online quizzes, but gives you the questions before, so they're really good to look up what the answers are.
Did not like the class whatsoever. He goes way off topic when he's lecturing. He is not a good professor. Doesn't show much concern for the class in general.
Basically the only reason people don't like this guy is because he actually wants to teach people things by making them study and attend the lectures. All his notes are online. He doesn't project his voice a lot, but if you sit in the front you'll understand everything he says. I enjoyed his class a lot. Just go to lectures when you feel behind.
I really don't recommend this teacher! Tests and quizzes were sometimes unclear. He mumbles and talks facing the board ALOT!! Attending class was only good for getting papers. Other than that, he reads off of his own notes that you can simply print off and read yourself!
This class was so boring - lectures were a waste of time to go to since notes are online. I only went to get handouts for the online quizzes. And the online quizzes were not exactly easy either - he had a lot of tricky questions on them. I mainly studied the notes for tests although it was a lot material/memorization. Ended up with a BA.
I made the mistake of sitting in the back all semester because he starts to talk loud and kind of trails off through his sentences. I am horrible at Bio and got an A- in this class. Just go, and sit in the front half of the lecture hall.
The online quizzes saved me. The question may seem tricky but if you read the book the questions are usually written word for word in the book. Make sure to study the key terms at the ends of the chapters just knowing thoses is a big help on the exams. Most of the final questions are taken from the exams so make sure you get your tests back.
If you are able, change teachers! I went to every class and still didn't do all that great...he goes through slide extremely fast, memorize the whole study guide to do decent on exams!
Dr. C knows EXACTLY what he's talking about. I do not suggest taking this class if you have no prior bio knowledge because it will seem overwhelming and you will blame your misunderstanding on his teaching abilities, which is not the case. If you are interested in bio, definitely take this. Lectures are boring but he gives you a break on the tests.
UGH! My most hated class EVER! The professor seemed like a nice guy, but the lectures were so very boring. I often chose to skip the class, but I still managed a pretty goo grade. He usually gives out a take home quiz every class (which sucks if you skip) but they're very simple if you read the text/or notes.
He's a good teacher. This class is easy to pass if you go to class, take notes on his slides, do the quizzes and study for the tests. He is very knowledgeable and is willing to help at any time. Go to his office hours and get back your tests, study those for the final and you will get an A.
He is honestly the worst teacher ever. If you have no interest in Biology (which i did not) DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is unbeleivably boring, and the tests are really hard. The only thing keeping my grades decent are the online quiz's that he gives out almost once a week. He is really rude too. Not to mention the fact that he SUCKS at teaching
I used to absolutely LOVE biology until I took this course. Dr. Coulter is the worst teacher I have ever had and I have had some bad teachers. He mumbles, he doesn't make sense, he rambles on about nothing, and he crams AS MUCH AS HE POSSIBLY CAN right before the exam so you have to know a TON of stuff. He is horrible. The class is horrible.
The lectures are boring, but you have to go in order to get the homework. He doesn't put the questions online so it's the only way to get them. Other than boring lectures the tests are easy, and he offers plenty of extra credit.
Very Boring,Mumbles constantly,Gives out alot of easy quizzes. I recommend you to read the chapters and read the slide notes. You will fall asleep in his class guaransheed.
This professor needs to learn to speak in lamons terms. He is very mono tone and boring to listen to. He gives out quizzes once or twice a week which is the only reason to go. I would not have passed the class unless I read the full chapters and taught myself. Other than that he is a nice guy.
He mumbles a lot!
He is horrible...don't take the class
He is by far one of the worst teachers i have EVER had. The way that he rambles off topic is horrible. He combinds no more then 5- 7 chapters for just one test. I have done so crappy on all of my tests! Sciences are my best subject too!! Do not get him if you dont have too, i made that mistake and my grades showed because of it.
His tests are extremely hard
Wow, this guy is so boring. Dont need to go to class ever. All there is for hw is online quizes maybe once a week..Only went to class one time for the whole class...and i fell asleep right away. Dont take him. Straigh snooze fest!!
Wow, this guy is so boring. Dont need to go to class ever. All there is for hw is online quizes maybe once a week..Only went to class one time for the whole class...and i fell asleep right away. Dont take him. Straight snooze fest!!
Probably the WORST teacher ever!!!!! I'm not exaggerating either, he is so unbelievably bad; he mumbles, rambles on about things that he is not teaching, and crams like 6 chapters into one test. He is an extremely bad teacher and I would never recommend him.
He mumbled alot and tends to go off subject during his lectures. If you sit in the front rows he WILL hassle you if u are not paying complete attention to him... The tests are way above a 100 level class and I recommend to study his notes like 3 days in advance before a test. All I can say is: THANK GOD FOR FACEBOOK! HAHA
He's a good guy most of the time. Although, one time he yelled at me for leaving class and chased me up the stairs.
I only went to class the first 5 minutes to get the online quizzes. Just read the chapter and look at his powerpoints and you should be fine for the tests. Tests aren't that hard but he isn't a good teacher.
boring and hard
he teaches you nothing useful, but if you BUST YOUR BUTT OFF you can do well. you just have to STUDY HARD, read the book, read his notes, try and learn ALL THE INFO on his "review sheets" and really try. not a blow off class
Dr. Coulter is a great professor. Anyone who complains about him just haven't taken hard classes. If you want to take Genetics at Western, take it with Coulter.
Absolutely hated having him. I didn't do well on the exams. Go to his office and pick up the exams w/ the answers and study those questions for the final. I aced the final and ended up with a B.
The class isn't hard. Dr. Coulter is just an awkward explainer of information because his voice is a bit desolate and he tends to say a lot of side babble so youre confused on whats going on. Slides were unhelpful to me. very vague. Use the book website. It has flashcards, quizes, and study guides for you. Life Saver.
He is very hard to understand most of the time, and he rambles on about nothing. A lot of people do not show up in class unless it is test day. Just make sure that you read the book and take the quizes and you will do fine in the class.
If your thinking about taking this guy, dont. It's impossible to understand what he's talking about. The class itself isnt that hard because a lot of points come from quizzes and the tests have matching and T and F questions but i hate being in his lecture. Oh, and make sure to call him DOCTOR Coulter, he will get offended if you dont.
Terrible teacher for biology. You must use the book to do the lecture quizzes, but his lectures are pointless. You need to study big time just to get a B. Grab your tests from him after office hours and use that to help you for the final. Other than that, you might as well re-take this class a different semester.
Talks like the clear eyes man and is very boring. gives worksheets for online quizzes during class so u have to show up..the questions arent online. i only showed up in the beginning and left once i grabbed the quiz. read the chapters(he teaches out of the book) change professors if possible. rambles
This man is ridiculous. He talks in a monotone voice which makes him super boring. You absolutely need to study weeks in advance for his exam in order to get a decent grade. There are so many vocabulary words you need to know. If possible find a different class or teacher to take.
He tries to hard to be rude and can cross the line when it come to evolution, making fun of peoples religion, its highly posible to pass without showing up,he can also be corny trying to embarrass people about cell phones, his classes are boring but he tries to be funny,Its not hard to pass his class, just do the quizzes and extra credit
The only reason to go to class is to get the paper for the online quizzes. His lectures are extremely boring and he is often hard to understand. He does offer quite a bit of extra credit though, so take advantage of it.
This teacher is a joke, he is so monotone. BORING, and you have to study so much just to receive a good grade. I dont even understand half the stuff he says because hes to busy trying to make kids look dumb for a cell phone going off.
Very hard to sit and listen to during lecture. He usually ends up talking extensively about things we don't actually need to know for the test...it would be a lot more useful if he would use that time to elaborate on the things we DO need to know.
he teaches a lecture class. he rambles off about things and no one knows what hes talking about. i cant pay attention to his lectures, because he doesnt make very much sense. the main reason you need to attend all classes is because he gives online quizes out at random times.
I hate this class. It is actually painful for me to sit through it. I find myself on Facebook every class because he is monotone, and he rambles on and on about unimportant things. His tests are very hard, but you would be smarter to just read the chapters rather than go to class. The only reason I ever did was to get the paper for his quizzes.
I cannot stand this class. The lecture is so pointless. When I try to take notes on my laptop, he skips around from slide to slide and doesn't even go back on some of them. It's hard to get a good grade if you don't study and read the chapters. He is not helpful. He says that you can come to his office hours but he's too intimidating for that.
For an intro level class, he's very hard. The lectures aren't particularly useful, focus more on reading the assigned chapters. You'll learn way more about bio than you probably want to, but it will be through your own efforts. Do the extra credit, and study for the tests. Very possible to get an A if you legitimately try.
Coulters class is challenging, but it is not impossible. Alot of material is derived from lecture slides and quizzes, so go to class even though it isn't mandatory. Read chapters twice through. For the final exam it is cumulative. Go to office hours and collect previous exams, all questions on the final come from previous exams. Good Luck!
This class is so boring! He mumbles and goes on useless and annoying tangents. He is a very harsh grader and thinks that everyone in his class is a biology major. Everyone I know has failed his class or gotten a C. Take it with another teacher. He is very strange and doesn't help in office hours.
He isn't very helpful, and doesn't much care if you don't understand the information. He is useless in office hours.
He isnt helpful and gets mad when you ask questions.
If you do your homework, read and go to lecture, you should do well in this class. The problem is, he is very insulting and derogatory toward students, making it clear he does not respect them or think they are intelligent. He actually will criticize you if you ask a question he deems either below him or not germane to the lecture.
This guy is not the greatest. As a prof he kind of REEEAAALLLY sucks. But he seems like a cool guy outside of his job. He isn't welcoming when you do go to office hours and he wants you to ask questions in class but he finds them beneath him and dances around the answer and never gives you what you're looking for. Worst class EVER!
Very degrading towards his students. Rants on and on and on...I don't get anything out of his lecture that I couldn't get out of the notes he puts online.
Unclear, extremely boring, no help at all if you go to his office hours. Gets off subject a lot. You basically have to teach yourself the material.
Am currently halfway through the class and have nothing bad to say. lectures do sometimes bounce around a little but so far have been very relevant to future tests. Read a lot of complaints over the many quiz handouts, i don't understand this as they are easy points. Lot of extra credit offered as well. Easy class but attendance VERY important.
He is very rude towards his students and also mumbles A LOT! he will finish all sentences in a mumble. He assigns way too much reading that is never on any test or quiz and is very unhelpful.
You will survive this class with a passing grade if you show up and do all of the quizzes (which are not difficult). There is ample opportunity for extra credit. Do it! The final is way easier than the other 3 exams. Use those exams for studying for the final. 1. Show up 2. Do the homework 3. Study for exams -Not the profs fault if you can't manage
If you dont know or like biology, this class will be very difficult for you. I would recommend taking a different area VI. That being said, I worked really hard and got a C. If you attend every class (clicker points), do every assignment and do EC offered, you should be able to get a C in this class no matter how bad you do on the tests.
He is very helpful and good at explaining things that can get confusing. he is very patient and cares about student success. doing and understanding assigned book problems and homework helps for tests. make sure to come to class and pay attention to notes.
His lectures are very very boring. I find myself always falling asleep or doing other homework from my last class. He does give you extra credit opportunities which is great. But I just wish his lectures were more helpful.
Just a horrible teacher.
I don't even know where to start. He is by far the most rude professor I have ever met. I get being very educated in what you love to teach, but don't criticize other people for asking questions. If you love what you do, then you should love to teach and answer anything about it. Coulter likes to hear his own voice. You won't know what to study.
This guy wasn't meant to be a teacher. He mumbles and teaches at a way higher level than intro. He's rude and unapproachable. He tends to hop all over the place in the book. The tests are ridiculously hard and impossible to study for (since he jumps around so much). It would be better to take this class at KVCC.
This class is extremely HARD. It is supposed to be an introduction to Biology, yet he teaches at a way higher level. Lecture is very boring, and its very hard to understand since he mumbles and talks extremely fast. He jumps around in the book everywhere which makes the exams impossible to study for. This class was very hard.
He knows what he's talking about but hard to really grasp everything he teaches. Review the powerpoint. Gives too many chapters to read. YOU HAVE TO READ EVERYTHING HE ASSIGNS! Tests(3) are very detailed and hard if not well prepared. Go to the office hours and STUDY STUDY STUDY. Do all the online assignments and attend class. This class is hard!
I am a major in Biology and I failed this class. He is very hard to follow along with and very boring. I would avoid taking any classes with him.
Honestly, as long as you show up for class and do the work this class isn't that hard. It's a college class people, you're expected to do some work on your own. He assigns readings and asks questions about them, it isn't that hard to understand. He gets a bad rap but honestly I studied really hard and did great.
Attendance is mandatory, as long as you show up, do the online quizzes and do ok on the exams you will pass this class. A lot of extra credit offered.
Not hard to pass if you put the time in. You be organized and show up to class on time. The best way to stay on top of what is on each test is to be in class on time and take notes on his beginning power points. Read the chapters, go to class, take the quizzes, and study. It's a college class. He's hard to follow but you can pass easy.
Dr. Coulter first exam is reasonable and if you study it is possible to pass. The rest of his exams-he make the exams IMPOSSIBLE honestly if you even study there is a big chance of you still failing the EXAMS. He can be rude at times to his students. I'm a grown adult and he shouted at me, if I was to shout back I would've gotten in trouble.
yes it is easy to pass the class as long as you do the online quizzes and STUDY HARD for the tests. He is so unbelievably rude and I would never take a class with him again even if it was required. Avoid him at all costs
I find this course much more difficult then any other introductory classes I have taken (I am a freshmen) He doesn't speak loudly enough, wastes much too much class time on useless explanations (e.g. e-learning instructions) skips around in the book, doesn't explain enough course info in class, assigns way too much reading. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
In his lectures they are boring as heck. But his quizzes are easy, he even gives away some of the answers in lecture if you actually listen. The online quizzes are super easy and you get easy points for it. You can get extra credit from clicker points and that is if you pay attention. But overall just study. You will do fine in his class.
Yes he is rude, rambles, and mumbles. Yes you can pass the class if you do the work. But if you are looking to get an A or even a BA, I would suggest a different teacher. Class receive test averages of 70% or lower, with less than 40% of students getting certain questions right- doesn't matter. He will not curve or throw out questions.
Most of the ratings are from Freshman nonbiology majors. I had him over the summer semester after BADLY failing genetics (so had a hatred for it already). One of the best. Genuinely cares about our grades. Stays after class to answer questions and holds his own review sessions. Work hard , pay attention and you'll do great! I don't hate it anymore!
Dr. Coulter made it very accomplishable to get a good grade in the class! If you read the chapters before class, take notes, and complete the study guides you will be fine. There are also online assignments that give you easy points! A lot of my classmates talked or were on their phones the whole time.
So awful. He is rude and not at all interesting. His online quizzes are not to difficult, but his tests are insane. The class average is always below 70% (which is a c), but he refuses to change questions. He is also quite rude whenever you ask for help. AVIOD AT ALL COSTS
He is an over all good teacher. The reviews are wrong when they say he won't help you. If you're failing or not doing as well as you would like, go to his office hours, or just talk to him after class and he will help you find a solution. He genuinely cares about how you're doing in the class if you show that you actually care how you're doing.
Very hard teacher in terms of figuring out what's going to be on the exam. He'll say to study one thing but a completely different subject will be on the test. STUDY EVERYTHING. Also 3/4 of the class is asleep or on their phones because he's monotone and doesn't relate anything to every day living. Not a great teacher and also a pretty hard class.
The class is very boring. Most of the time people are texting or watching Netflix. If you do the readings you will do great. The online quizzes are easy. I advise going to him if you need anything, he really can help.
He is uninterested in teaching a 1000 level bio course and it shows. Lectures are mind-numbingly boring. I do all the readings and take notes but currently only have a BC since tests are nearly impossible. There are easy points to pick up from attendance and online work but not enough to outweigh a bad test. Would strongly advise against this prof.
If you listen to the lectures and read the material you'll do fine. He grades fairly and offers a lot of extra credit. My lowest test score was a B but still finished the class with over 100% because of all the extra credit. He wants his students to do well and encourages office hours.
He gave enough points to keep your grade up but exams were difficult and hard to figure out what may be on them, went to office hours never helped, don't waste your time.
Office hours did not help at all, difficult exams, hard to understand and rude. But did give out enough points to pass the class with attendence and ex. credit.
He mumbles and uses disorganizedconfusing powerpoints. He is rude when students ask questions. The only reason to attend lectures is for attendance (clicker) points. If you don't mind teaching yourself all of the material, you'll be fine. Otherwise, find a different prof.
I held a 85% most all semester. He gives a lot of take home quizzes. His other assignments are given online which were easy points as well. He also had attendance points and extra credit opportunities throughout class. I passed 13 of his tests and failed the final but still passed with a B. He is rude, and very boring. Tough class to sit through
Rude to students when they don't immediately understand.
Dr. Coulter knows what he is talking about, but he is also very cocky about it. Although his exams are super hard, he gives you every reason to pass. As long as you do the homework, quizzes, and go to class you will pass. He also gives a lot of chance for extra credit. I would reccommend if you HAVE to take this course
His lectures and exams are brutal, so be prepared to study. Office hours aren't worth it either.
Took Genetics with him. Clicker questions are easy points but lecture isn't really worth it so don't bother paying attention. Read the chapters and go through the power points.. and if he says memorize all the amino acids... DO IT!
Took Pharmacology with him. He isn't an amazing teacher, but he does present the material in a clear, sequential manner. Tests are not easy, but he gives utterly insane amounts of extra credit if you're fast enough to finish the math portions within the time limit (I ended the class with 109%). A bit tough to talk to, but a friendly person.
Avoid Coulter if you can. test are extremely difficult and the weekly quiz's he gives are no better. You can pass but be prepared to put multiple hours a week into his class because he will make you read the book and know his slides. I wont take his class again. He shouldn't be a teacher due to the amount of complaints the school receives about him
I'll be honest, there's a reason he is rated poorly. The class is a lot of work, although towards the end of the semester it gets a bit easier. You'll want to read the book. There was usually a quiz each weekend. Lots of clicker questions so you can't miss class. Reads right off of the slides. Test are all mult. choice. Goes over on class time too.
Contrary to the popular opinion of the other students in my class, I liked him a lot. Answers to most of the exam questions are found in the book, wth some from lecture. Some people found his exams difficult but they are passable if you put work into reading the book. His quizzes are easy, and gives some opportunities for extra credit.
He really isn't as bad as his rating says. He is actually very lenient and gives a lot of extra credit on tests. Be wary of bad comments because it is easy to say something bad about a professor, but students rarely go out of their way to say something good.
Coulter gets a bad rap, but doesn't live up to the name. He was actually a really good teacher, just went into far more detail than was necessary (likes to trail off). He gives off a "tough-guy" vibe, but adds on extra credit until people do well. Approachable, but will talk your ear off. I would take another class from him.
his favorite line is "this isnt rocket science"
Pretty sure this guy believes that life ceases to exist outside of his classroom. The workload is outrageous and he rambles constantly... Tests are beyond difficult. He lectures and then proceeds to say "you don't need to know this" awful awful awful
I had Coulter for a non-major, intro Bio, honors class. I received an A in the class but the class was very difficult. He is not good at explaining the information or emphasizing what is important for tests. I regret not switching professors. He also gave us a 8-14p. research paper due the same day as our last test and the class before the final.
Honestly, I would say that he has been my worst professor yet, and I have had some doozies. He is not clear on expectations, a slow grader, and never responds to emails. In just the last two weeks of class, we were assigned two online quizzes, various homework assignments, an exam, an 8-14 p. research paper, three peer review papers, and our final
Coulter is an extremely smart man and knows what he is taking about but that made it painful to sit through lectures when he just rambles. It is near impossible to get ahold of him outside class. Tests are ridiculously hard and get ready to write an essay during finals week. Get ready to dedicate your life to biology for the next semester.
Dr coulter is a brilliant guy. I found i had to work my tail off in his class. It's definitely not a slack off course. If you go into any exam or assignments in hopes of winging it, you've already lost. That said he is a fair grader and was always available for help
Dr coulter is a brilliant guy. I found i had to work my tail off in his class. It's definitely not a slack off course. If you go into any exam or assignments in hopes of winging it, you've already lost. That said he is a fair grader and was always available for help outside of class. As long as he knows you're trying, he'll do what he can to help.
I am currently taking his class now. We just finished exam one and he pretty much told us how stupid the class was for getting the "easy" questions wrong. He is giving us an opportunity to improve our grade so that is nice, but he is all around a mean professor and is heavy on grading. I honestly feel like I am in high school.
Worst prof I've had. Reads directly off the slides, does not actually teach during lectures, mumbles everything he says, brings politics/religion/etc. into his lectures, & lacks the ability to convey any information to students. if you take him, be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING & still probably fail the exams, they don't reflect the slides.
Does not know how to teach. Tests do not reflect what is being conveyed from powerpoints and he reads directly from slides.
Dr. Coulter makes you work hard for your grade. Various quizzes and homework throughout the semester that aren't difficult but the exams are! Very monotoned during lectures making it difficult to focus. If you do not much on biology, find a different professor because you have to work hard and review on your own often to do well intros class.
He is impossible to listen to. He's very boring and mumbles, so you can't understand a word he says. Even if you feel like you know the material somewhat well by looking at the slides and quizzes, you will not do good on the exams. The exams are extremely difficult and worded horribly. He has given extra credit which helps, but it's frustrating.
You go to the lecture because you need the points. You use iclicker in class a lot and its worth only a point in the grade system. He will give you quizzes that go with the book that aren't hard but when it comes to tests nothing correlates. None of the notes or anything from the book go with the test. Go to the extra practice hours. good luck!
Dr. C knows more than you could imagine about biology and most students do not use this to their advantage. Go to his personal office hours and he WILL help you! You get what you work for in his class; study on your own, read the chapters, and take your time on take-home quizzes. There are not very many points in this class and every one counts.
Dr. C knows what he is talking about, but he doesn't know how to teach the information. He just rambles in his lectures and doesn't seem to care if you learn anything or not. iclickers are mandatory and so is attendance. His tests don't really correlate with his lectures and you better be prepared to do a lot of studying on your own. good luck! lol
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Never posted the slides he went over until days after he lectured on them, 3-4 hour connect assignments that he'll post days before they're due, yells at students, makes everything way more difficult than it has to be. Exams are an impossible combo and you will need to spend hours studying.
Coulter is super smart and knows what he is doing. He's very nice but his class is definitely tough. There's just a lot of content but its not heavy on homework. His tests are also very reasonable and all of the work you do is important and will help on the tests. If you need help I know that he is more than willing to help.
The class was challenging. In order to do well, must remember basically everything from the powerpoints. Lectures should be attended because he sometimes mentions things not on the powerpoints that you will need to know. Tests frequently have questions about history (significant people and what they did) and technology covered in lecture.
My boy Doug was a good professor and made the transition to online pretty well considering he didn't know how to use his computer at the beginning of the sem. Be ready for high school bio part 2. He threatens to take phones away if he sees them. If you get rid of the UG and OUL in his name it spells doctor.
