more like a 2nd history class than comp 1 - this is a class of doug dawson's opinions, complete with little insight to the inner workings of his mind, and very little room for individualism if he doesn't agree with your ideas. be prepared for quizzes every class over insignificant details.
Has the worse handwriting of any instructor ever. You cannot read anything he writes on he board. Is not very clear in his instructions or lectures. Often is rude to students. Avoid him.
i enjoyed his class and learned a lot.
Very good teacher. I enjoyed his Comp1 class. I learned how too rite good gramer. haha. He is very intelligent and overall nice guy.
good teacher. I took the selfpace class. If you do exactly what he says you will pass with flying colors. Very helpful and available. Seems to be unapproachable but once you talk to him he warms up a little.
At least he keeps it interesting.
Just kicked out from his class, but he is a good professor. If you take his class just remember to stay in the rule. He will let you survive if you folow his rules. After all he is awesome. Really hate my self when i get kicked out.
rude to students...doesnt make you want to get help bc hes intimidating. very matter of fact. gets his point across
This is a rediculously easy class as long as you actually attend every day, and do the work. The writing is not tough, very easy assignments, although sometimes a bit overly-complex. He's a nice guy, but he loses his patience easily and can be mighty vitriolic with students at times. It's all good though, just COME TO CLASS and you will be dandy.
I took his HONORS class, and was definitely the weak link in discussions and papers. However, every assignment in his HONORS class is a completion grade. There is a good bit of writing, but the atmosphere is absolutely amazing and I feel smarter for having taken it. Instant A and discussions for how the material relates to your daily life? Yes plea
The guy will find any reason to drop you, he is rude and does not give good feedback on your papers. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I really enjoyed Dawson's English Comp class. If you show up, do the assignments, and pay attention, you'll learn a lot. While he is opinionated, rude is not a word I would use to describe his classroom demeanor. If you make the effort, he'll work with you to get the most out of the class.
He is ill tempered. not at all helpful. and a very bad comuntcator about the subject matter. he acts as though he's giving away secrets or the answers to the test if he goes into detail of what he is looking for on the papers. he's constantly threatining to drop people.class started with 30 people, half way though only has 15. thats alot.
would take his class again. Took honors class with him and enjoyed it thoroughly. if you do consistently come to class late, miss classes etc yeah he will be peeved but thats better than the Prof. who does not care!
Mr. Dawson is a great professor. Some may say that he is too opinionated, but I would say that he is passionate about his subject matter (something that I would want for every teacher to possess). Don't be afraid to speak your mind, but be ready to back it up. No mandatory textbook!
Well read and informed, a fountain of enlightening information, articulate, and intelligent. Be punctual and maintain attendance, pay close attention, follow instructions and ask questions. Do these things and you will excel and enjoy his class. A top shelf professor.
He is a Horrible teacher. Very arrogant, unwilling to help and ready to drop you for any and all reasons.
doug dawson is the easiest professor ever! took him for eng1, breezed through it without any trouble. he definitely isn't one to joke around, but he makes things very very simple. no textbook, just hand outs and the syllabus. he grades very loosely as well. if you are literate and don't mind writing, this class should be no big deal for you.
This Professor has no empathy. He sometimes can become hysterical and snap if he hears a comment he doesn't like. Overall I wouldn't recommend him to anyone through my bad personal experience with him and the class. He will drop you unannounced even if you have a deceased family member and have to miss class once, no accommodation can be made!
Enjoyed his class, we worked in groups a lot. He is always willing to help in the learning lab. And you get to choose your grade by how many papers you write.
I highly recommend you take Dough Dawson as a professor to any class he is offering! He wants to help his students learn more and keeps your interest!
I really like Prof. Dawson. Yes he did drop like 4 or 5 people after the first paper but it was because they didn't turn them in and had a over a week to do it. While mine is a self paced course and only meet once a week, he has plenty of time for you to come talk to him
Prof Dawson is awesome! I have taken him for 1301 and 1302; each time he has been helpful & I have gotten an A both times! He is very straightforward and tells you everything he wants in a paper/quiz. Great prof!
Mr. Dawson is an amazing teacher and really knows what he is talking about. He divides the class into groups that work together on projects like compiling anthologies for the different aims of writing. The class will use these instead of a textbook so this will also save you $. This was my first time writing essays in 12 years and I received an A.
You definitely can't be lazy on your essays. He will drop you (like the 5-6 students that were in my class) if he sees that you aren't putting an effort. For a geezer... he is HOT! Specially with the smirk he puts on!
Great Professor, I took him for Comp II and American Literature. I would suggest taking him for honors if you have the opportunity. Very funny, interesting, and enlightening but you must try or he will not put up with you.
Professor Dawson is amazing! he is strict with deadlines, but he makes sure that you know exactly what is expected of you. He is very involved in the classes he teaches which makes it easier for you to find interest. I would honestly say he's one of the best English Professors out there.
Professor Dawson comes off as a bit rough around the edges in the beginning, but after a few weeks of class you see his love for the subject. I took his Honors class, the Dirty 30s. It's great the detail he goes into with the literature and the movies of the time period. If you get the opportunity to take this class, I highly recommend that you do!
Rough at first. No textbook. Lots of group work. He won't drop you if someone dies or for no reason... professors are willing to accommodate IF you have a legitimate reason! Very specific about what he wants in a paper. DO THE PAPERS and you'll get whatever grade you're aiming for!
Honestly he does not seem very approachable. Be careful to not ask questions he just answered just ask a classmate instead. He will make you very uncomfortable if you are more than 15 min late. He is strict with deadlines. Getting an A is possible with moderate effort. You must take your books and all handouts he gives you to class each class time.
I wouldn't recommend him to anyone to be honest. He is very arrogant and not approachable at all. He assigns ridiculous amounts of reading and doesn't take into account that his students might be taking other classes as well. He's very passionate about the Dirty 30's and teaching but it doesn't justify his ego or the way he treats students.
He doesn't take any baloney. If you do what is expected the class is a hike in the woods opposed to a walk in the park. There's some rough terrain but he will guide you if you listen. He's a stickler for deadlines so don't expect any slack. Other than that he has some amusing quips and historical insights to add to the material at hand.
He knows and cares about what he's teaching, and doesn't mind taking the time to respond to emails or talk to you in person. You don't have to be an experienced writer to get an A in this course, you just have to do the work. I took this online and it really doesn't require too much time.
He was very clear on what he wanted. I liked his grading criteria.
definitely comes off meantough at first, but i took him for comp I and II. hilarious, responds quickly to emails, will meet you for help wpapers -just ask! had a B, told him I wanted an A; i put in the effort and earned an A. AWESOME prof if you are willing to work hard and communicate with him! will not take any BS- refreshingly up front prof.
Very strong personality. Would definitely enjoy taking more of his classes. Show up, make an effort, get a good grade. If you go to school just to get through it, you don't deserve this class.
Took his Dirty 30s honors course & it was easily my favorite class this semester! Tons of reading, so if you're a lazybones like me you're gonna have to get over it really quickly or fail the quizzes. Graded mostly off the mid-term writings and the final ten page paper. Overall, I really enjoyed this class. Professor Dawson is amazing!
The entire grade for Honors Lit was 30% 10 pg paper on your topic, 25% group presentation (video or so), 15% biweekly question, 30% midterm 10 pg paper creative writing. Easy, easy class. Very educated so you learn a lot. He will drop if you miss class, he also will give feedback during office hours. We "read" 9 books.
If you are genuinely interested in English, value good feedback, and have a desire to LEARN, then Prof. Dawson is your man. There is a lot of work and quite a bit of reading, but his grading is clear and if you take his feedback to heart you will be successful! Would take again. I love ending a class feeling as though I've learned a lot!
I took Honors American Lit II - at first I was ready to drop it, but I'm glad I stayed on board because he really wants to help you get a good grade in his class. He's not so much of a tough grader. Gives really good feedback and ideas to expand your paper. DO NOT slack because things will get difficult. 10/10 would recommend.
This professor is slightly strict. Does not tolerate any phones, will not stand for any side-talk. If you don't do the work, you wont pass. He gives out daily quizzes and reading so skipping class will cause your grade to fall. he is a great professor and gives great feedback on papers. He also clearly lays out what he expects in his assignments.
Prof Dawson gives excellent feedback and helps you clean up your writing. Class seems intense at first but is more relaxed towards the end. He can be kind of preachy and inflammatory, at times I agreed with his points but others I couldn't believe what he just said. Keeps your attention and makes it interesting.
Took him for English 1302 online class. He is great, gives feedback, and is very lenient. My one complaint is the stories that you have to analyze, which is every paper that you have, is very difficult to understand. This would be a great class for someone majoring in English but if you're looking for something easy, this is not it.
Clear grader and gives extra chances to score a better grade on the first two papers.
Took him for Amer Lit. His lectures are fun but they don't help with preparing you for the exams and you cant afford to miss classes as there is assigned reading and quizzes every day. His grading is pretty lenient and he has a curve. I would take him again. A's are attainable with him as long as you show up to all the classes and care.
If you don't show up multiple times he will drop you, if you're not liking to wok hard you won't pass. If you listen to his advice, study the packet he gives you and are willing to try your best you'll do just fine. 4 papers and a final. He tells you exactly what is expected of you and gives you plenty of time to do the work. 10/10!
Beware of the online class! You NEED to read the course packet before turning in the first essay. I mistakingly winged it on the first essay and it brought me down an entire letter grade.
Prof Dawson is by far the greatest professor I have ever had at ACC. Show up, participate, READ, and start your paper ASAP, and you will get an A in this class. He is so charismatic and likable. He really pushes you out of your comfort zone to make you a better writer and better at reading out loud.
Doug is a great teacher. Not only does he care about how well you do in class he wants you to succeed. He is hilarious, gives good feedback, grades paper like they where givin. The class is good only four papers pay attention is all I can say this class is not hard. Not passing is on you not him. Reading in his class in mandatory, but really helps
This class was Amer Lit and the amount of reading should be expected, but the prep for tests was not efficient. He will give you a list of readings and then only tests you on very specific information within that reading that amounts to about 5% of what he gave you to re-read for the test. He is good at responding to emails quickly!
When I read American Literature up to the Civil war, I thought ok, its gonna be about the United States early Literature, this is not correct. It's about the most obscure reading of mostly Spanish explorers, for the most part, I wouldn't of taken the class If I had known this.
He is honestly the worst professor I have taken. You could pick imagery and the story would have imagery but it would be wrong because he wants symbolism. So its his way or no way. Hes very arrogant and makes you so uncomfortable. Do not take him
Tough but fair. Lots of reading, quizzes first three-quarters of term, but gives us the last month to finish submitting papers. Always available for help during class and office hours. My Comp I teacher let me get away with stuff Dawson will not. I think he's doing his job. He says "it doesn't get any easier at a four year school"
Definitely a great professor. He is very clear on what he wants on the first day of class. He's honest and will tell you how it is. His grading style is clear and I enjoy hearing his constructive criticism because it helped me advance as a writer. I would definitely take the class again if it were an option.
Professor Dawson has high expectations on his students. Must read everything he assigns to pass all the quizzes. Gives positive feedback on all papers written.
I recently had Professor Dawson for American Literature I. It has been an absolute pleasure having him as my professor. Lectures are astonishing, and he is very knowledgeable. Now, you will have to apply yourself. There is a lot of reading to be done with many quizzes. Two big exams. Just complete the reading assignments, and you will be fine.
takes literally forever to grade papers. hes awful. seriously, dont take him
Lots of quizzes over reading assignments but they are easy. Only 4 papers which he would give time off of class to do. I felt like h had a tendency to "reach" when it came to figurative language and there were a lot of symbols he would bring up that no one had any idea about. He is very fair, but if imagery/symbolism/etc is hard for you, good luck
Do not take this professor. I had him for a summer course and ended up dropping because he was such a tough grader even the tutors at ACC couldn't help me in his class. I think he was more about getting back to his summer vacation than teaching. If you want a professor that's worth a damn, take someone else.
Professor Dawson offered great feedback on all of our papers. For an online class, he is a great choice as he is very responsive and timely with his grading. However, there is a lot of reading for his class, and you do have to put a certain amount of effort into the papers.
I advise anybody taking English Composition 1 or 2 to go with Mr. Dawson. He gives you plenty of time for essays so there should be no excuse for late work. We had many group days and work days so everybody was very comfortable. I passed with an A and I'm pretty for sure anyone else can to in his class.
dough is a complete jerk literally the worst professor i have ever had dosnt give feedback till the end of the course when you cant fix anything at that point. covid 19 started and literally was the only professor that did not gave online cases or support. he cares 0 about you as a student dosnt care if you succeed completely arrogant .
I definitely recommend taking Prof Dawsons English class! He gives in depth feedback on papers, and is always available to help you with anything. He even helped me with papers from other classes the next semester when I wasnt his student anymore. If you respect him, he will respect you; simple as that.
Professor Dawson is an amazing teacher! Hes very funny and gives great lectures. He makes each assignment super easy to follow and understand. I thoroughly enjoyed taking his class this semester, and I would love to have him as my professor again.
I very much so enjoyed working with Prof. Dawson. His guidance was clear and he doesn't micromanage your work. He gives a good outline of what he expects and then it is up to you to finish the assignment in a grammatically and artistically accurate, understandable, and literate manner. The tests are simple and the reading is interesting.
Okay, this professor is very picky and he does not give out A's unless you deliver an exemplary paper. I say that, because the grade average in our class is very low. Only 2 people passed with A's. He most gave B's and about 10 people failed. He gives good feedback and all, but his standard is HIGH. Be STRONG in English if you take him.
I agree with other reviewer. There is no correct central idea, but if your central idea does not match what HE thinks it is, he says it is wrong. You could have good analysis, but again he dislikes it he will take off points. The story could have certain symbolism, and he will still take off. STRICT! No idea why people have given him god reviews.
He uses a letter grading system instead of the accepted/revised grading system like other English profs use, which means it will be more difficult to get an A. He gives really good feedback, on paper and you will learn something. Your grade, however, will suffer. So it's up to you to decide. I could have gotten a better grade and learned elsewhere
My advice for anyone taking him is to use Hemingway editor because he hates repetition and wordiness and will dock points off for it. I'd say if you're a decent writer your guaranteed a B, but if you want that A you're gonna need to put in some work. Your analysis has to be mostly correct, and make your CI specific to story cuz he does things weird
He has been my least favorite prof at ACC thus far. There are no class meetings, it is all reading and writing papers. The assignment instructions are unclear and he grades very toughly. He makes announcements of what he expects in the papers but doesn't put them on rubrics so if you don' see it, you will not get a good grade. Do not take him!
So far he's the worst teacher at essay, and is a tough grader, what's terrible about him, is that he would make these jokes about the mistakes you make on your essay.
At first I didn't like him, but I had never received so much constructive feedback from and English teacher. He's a tough grader, but my writing improved as time went on during the semester. It is a college course so you will have to work for it, but if you do the reading, follow instructions you'll be OK
I have never seen an online class that was put together so terribly. On top of this, the professor is not lenient at all in any situation, on top of being very blunt and rude. I learned nothing in this class, and this professor has managed to destroy my love for college and English in general. Do not take his class.
Professor Dawson has been flexible this semester because of the pandemic and a killer snowstorm. Hes been willing to work with students by making changes to the syllabus, and extending due dates, accommodating you if you put forth effort and making the best out of a bad situation.
Prof Dawson was great! I had him for an 8 week asynchronous class so I didn't really get to know him, but from the few emails we sent, he was nice. The entirety of the grade comes from 3 essays, so don't take 1301 if you aren't a strong writer. If you are though, I highly recommend Dawson's class.
I took Professor Dawson's eight-week asynchronous course. Grading for this course consists of three written papers, which he gives you ample time to complete. His grading is very fair, I was able to get an A in the course and am not a strong writer. If you read the material, follow his prompts and put in effort you can do well in his class!
This class was honestly barely there in my homework, there are a few papers you need to write that make up your grade completely. He was very behind in grading with how many classes he had but extended our due dates to make up for it. He's very considering and won't harm you or your grade based on him being behind, more than I can say for others.
Prof Dawson gives awesome feedback on work and is very understanding when it comes to needing extensions and such. So sweet and caring.
Easy class if you show up and pay attention. The professor is also very understanding and down to earth.
If you take his class online, be prepared to be self-motivated and have good time-management skills. There are only a few grades and all of them are papers. I submitted 3 the entire semester and received an A. He provided clear rubrics and was always available to answer questions or give feedback. I thought he was wonderful!
Took a 16week 100% online. Graded on 3 essays for the whole semester. Would give you clear instructions and example reading. Not allowed to make up the grade or redo for higher grade but give weeks in advance to write your assignments.
The assignments were delayed & pushed back multiple times & the quiz grades are still not posted & we have about a week left of school. It's hard to make up for bad grades or know if you should even drop the class or not since grades were not posted the entire semester. He spends lecture time talking about mostly unrelated topics. NO EXTRA CREDIT!
The semester has already ended, and he has only graded one assignment out of three. He doesn't offer extra credit and he questions you if you leave early from his class. He as also likes to get off track, and starts talking about football out of no where.
A very well-versed instructor, forward, to the point, doesn't pander to any one crowd, does a great job of challenging students' thought process. A class with him provides students growth in understanding the real world outside of the class. He is incredibly fair with grading, provides feedback and reminds everyone when work is due. 10/10
I have never had a professor quite as dedicated as Mr. Dawson. His commitment to his students is evident through the feedback he gives on assignments. I really loved how concise this course was, there are three major assignments that make up your final grade. Time management and proofreading are all you need to pass. He is always more than fair.
I really enjoyed this class. Each assignment involved reading or watching a movie before writing a formal yet personal essay. Creative thinking was encouraged, and the essays were inspired by various readings. The professor responded quickly and gave helpful feedback for improvement.
I don't think he was a bad instructor; overall, he was okay. He often pushes back due dates, but if you stay prepared for the quizzes, it's easy to keep up with your grades. Arriving 30 minutes late counts as an absence, and there are no makeups or extra credit, which seems fair since he drops the four lowest grades. Overall, it's not a bad class.
Does nothing to help.
