I don't think that I would take a class from this professor again. His "just figure it out" atittude is disturbing when you ask him about an assignment. Not to mention his workload is huge. This is a JC not a UC right? Don't reccommend.
he is lame and only follows the book
Doug is a really good teacher and he pushes his students to do good work. If you want to take pictures of your friends drinking and your puppy dog. this isnt the class for you. If you want to develop your style and vision, take this class and he will be very helpful.
I have no clue what the other people who left bad reviews are talking about, this teacher is great. He turly cares about his students and is more than happy to help you. He knows exactly what he is talking about and starts off his students on a higher level that teaches you more walking away from his course!
One of my all time favorite teachers. He cares about his students, especially those who work hard and care about their photography, he challenges you and the result is highly beneficial. A great teacher. Fun. Connects well with students!
Doug's assignments are easy. When I say easy I mean you really don't have to put thought into them. He seems to care about his students but his attitude toward them changes often. He doesn't really care about presentation but comes off as having this super duper difficult process of doing stuff, yet doesn't care when people don't do it right.
great teacher know tons about the photography industry. all ways there to help and challenges you.
I am getting the feeling that the people who left a bad rating were really into photography and were looking for an easy A. Doug makes you good, fast. He is cocky and rude at times but that is him. He is also fun/funny and easy to get along with. A fairly laid back and open environment. Could be hard to get along with if you can't stand a challenge
If not for Doug, I would not have the passion for photo that I've today, nor my technical/critiquing abilities. He taught me the most valuable lesson of all: You can't teach someone what "good" is, or how to BE "good." The world is full of things that suck, people that suck, and people with bad taste who like the "suck."
It's been 2yrs since I transferred to a UC, and I constantly wish that there were some teachers like Doug here. I am surrounded by Brooks & UCSB students/grads whom seem to have no clue about how much they suck. They need to be knocked off their pedestals and need to be told to STOP contributing to the ever-steady downgrade of quality in the media.
Professor Highland is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is willing to work with students who are engaged and interested, and help them succeed. He's not "easy" and wants students to work hard, but it is rewarding. He's realistic about people living in the real world, but still has expectations about reaching for your potential.
He is the best photo teacher i have ever had. He knows a lot about the world of photography, and is not afraid to tell you to go and do something again. I have spent countless hours talking to him, and he has helped my work tremendously. I highly recommend this teacher!!
Awesome teacher! Class does require a lot of work but as long as you get your projects done on time and put effort into them he grades fairly. You also have the opportunity to correct your photos at the end of the semester before you turn in your portfolio for a better grade.
Highland is very condescending. The majority of the class struggled. He does know his stuff, but god forbid you even ask him a question, for if you do, he will try to scrutinize you in front of the whole class. He also curses a lot (which are basically petty attempts at being cool) He's also very bitter. Take him if you can put his persona aside.
Doug is a really competent, fun teacher. His manner is a little bit abrasive, but that's just his personality and you can't take his sarcasm to heart. He really knows his stuff and explains things clearly and in a way that's easy to understand. He's pretty laid-back and just an all around cool guy. I highly recommend taking classes from him.
Doug is an amazing photo teacher! He's very helpful and knows his stuff really well. It can be challenging and he will push you to be a better photographer but if you do the work you'll get thru it and he's always open for you to talk to him. His sarcasm and jokes are hilarious and he's pretty laid back and overall it was just a fun class to be in.
Doug is one of the best teachers I have had. Don't go into this class expecting him to hold your hand throughout the way. He will tell you how it is, and you should use that to your benefit, because he knows what he's talking about. Tough teacher, but he makes it fun. If you can't take constructive criticism, don't take the class.
I don't get all these positive comments for Prof Highland. He does know his stuff about photography, but he is such mean and obnoxious person he turned me off from the class. Most of the other students in class did not like him as he is so full of himself and he talks bad about everyone. I could not recommend him as he is such as negative person.
His personality seems to be getting in the way of his teaching, which is unfortunate. I was hoping the only negative I would be dealing with in the class was a piece of film, not his attitude.
Doug obviously has a passion about photography. He will make you work hard for your grade, so don't go in thinking it will be a breeze. He is very sarcastic, as others have said. U can be offended by him, or you can choose to joke around w/ him, that part can be fun. Worth taking if u want to actually learn photography. Not just a "filler" class.
Hands down the best photography teacher I've ever had
I had Doug for his beginning & his intermediate classes. If you really want to learn about photography as a technical skill & as an artform, definitely take him. It's best that you don't slack off & you're an active participant in the critiques. When it comes down to it, Doug wants his students to succeed, so don't get intimidated! Take him!
Doug Highland is the best professor you could ever hope to have. He is intelligent, knowledgeable and passionate and will do whatever he can to help his students out, especially student who do their work (novel concept). If you are willing to work and actually want to learn something, Doug is the professor you need.
Doug Highland's class was the highlight of my semester. His teaching style is hands-on and fast-paced, but easy to follow. I found his sense of humor invigorating, and he's easy to get along with. He knows what he's talking about because it is his passion, which shows through his teaching. I would absolutely recommend taking his class.
Great teacher, great guy and a really good mentor if you love photography. Take him if your willing to show up and participate fully in the class. Don't get offended at his sarcasm... it's just Doug talking. Overall, it's an amazing class so take it.
Best teacher I've ever had! This class is not an easy A but to have a teacher like him it's worth the hard work. He really does all he can to help you succeed in this class.I not only learned a lot from him i also was able to retain it.
4 yrs ago I took every class of Doug's. Best instructor ever. Still use his advice and teachings today. I work with high end photographers and on my own as well. People are always impressed with the way I work and knowledge I have. It's all from Doug! If you are willing to put in the effort and show your interest, Doug will help you all the way.
Great teacher, very funny and laid back. Not the easiest, but he's passionate about his work and will do his best to teach and help you. I loved his class and hope to take more photo classes with him as the instructor.
Doug is awesome, people may take his attitude the wrong way at first but he is just telling it like it is. If you ask a stupid question that is clearly listed on the instructions... he will let you know. He doesn't baby people. Hes a professional and if you are interested in photography i would highly recommend him.
Doug is the BEST! he really knows what he is doing and really tries to make you understand what you are doing and why. this class took a lot of time and effort out of my day but in the end it was really worth it I came out of the dark room with beautiful prints I would highly recommend Dug to anyone. however he does use a lot of sarcasm.
I highly recommend Photographic Lighting! The first week can be overwhelming because of the different types of strobes and how they are used, but after that it's a lot of fun. Give yourself enough time to work on the assignments, use the studio as much as possible, write EVERYTHING down especially when it comes to the equipment, and have fun!
Very helpful and challenging. He will not let you take the easy way out, because that is not what you are there for. Great guy to talk to and hang out with.
Doug is such a great teacher. I left his class feeling confident and knowledgeable. He challenges you, which is a necessary part of the learning process, right? He was always clear and helpful as long as you showed him you were serious and wanted to learn. Everything was laid out on the syllabus. Absolutely a great guy, Id take it again.
Doug is a really knowledgable, inspiring teacher. being head of the department of photo at cuesta guarantees you will get the most out of the photography program. I was in the beginning photography class and just finished up in intermediate. I highly recommend him over anyone if you're serious about photography as a hobby or career.
Awesome teacher. Learned a lot. Stay caught up on work and ask for help!
At first Doug can be very intimidating, and in the beginning you may be a little scared to approach him. Don't be, and don't take things he says personally. He can come off a little mean but really he wants to help and and can be incredibly helpful if you let him. As long as you aren't asking a question he answered 30 times in his lecture go for it
Mr. Highland is a great instructor in the way that he delivers the course. You hit the ground running, but your guided the whole way. As long as you can become enthusiastic about photo, this class is greater than great.
His class was very knowledgeful and interesting. He is energetic and is very willing to help and wants to help students succeed. His vast knowledge of subject greatly helps and will help you have great prints and final products!
Fun class
Doug made this a challenging and fun class. He sets you up great and teaches you everything you need to know for each assignment.
If you want an easy A in an art class this isn't for you. If you want to learn something and get a better understanding of art, then it is. You get really good at the skills set and a lot of hands-on experience.
Not an easy A and not always available to help. However, I did learn a whole bunch.
You get what you put in. The more work you put in the better.
Great class. I learned a lot and had fun creating prints. Doug has a theme on critique days that usually involve food.
Doug is hands down one of the best instructors I have ever had. He has certainly found his true calling. He asks a lot of his students but he makes class fun and he pushes you to do your best. If you want a challenge taught by a great guy, any of Doug's classes are for you.
This class is NOT and easy A, easy B is more likely. Class requires a lot of time outside the classroom taking multiples of photos. Don't take this class with a heavy homework load, otherwise it's a ton of fun and interesting to boot.
Doug is the man, fun class... just do your work and work with him and youll cruise through!
great guy and very helpful, stay on his good side and show up with your work done and youll float through his class
Super fun class, not easy but worth it and fun. Learned more than I ever thought i would in film photography! nice teacher
Great class and teacher. i learned so much!!!
This class takes A LOT of time & hard work. Doug expects a lot from his students but is really willing to help. By the end of this class you will be able to make a great print in the darkroom and will be knowledgeable about film photography. Expect to spend about $100 on supplies + a camera. I highly recommend taking this class.
This class is awesome! It takes a lot of time and work and you may struggle at first, but practice makes perfect! Doug is always willing to help so don't be afraid to ask for his opinion on things. Take advantage of the open lab time and go to class as much as possible because it will benefit you in the end!
I took 3 of the photography classes that are taught by Doug, & they were the best. If you truly want to improve your knowledge and skill with photography, do yourself a favor and take his classes. He isn't the easiest, but he will give you the honest & straightforward answer that is needed to move forward. If I could, I would take his classes again
Amazing teacher and photographer. Helps you so much and doesn't judge you. Will make you a much better photographer. Truly a great artist, person, and teacher!!! Take for beginning and intermediate
great professor, midterms and finals are very easy to pass if you take notes
Doug is very knowledgable as far as photography and very clear with what he wants from his students and assignments. Grading can be tough but you grow a lot as a photographer because of this
Great teacher. You need to have a sense of humor and tough skin, he will tell you if your work sucks, it only makes you better and make you laugh.
He is blunt, but his feedback is always helpful
Makes learning photography more interesting. He knows what he is doing so listen to him. May come off as a mean person at first but he's really trying to help you. Take this class of you are interested in photography.
Don't be intimidated by the fact that it's a film class. Your learn so much about cameras in general , it made me much better with my digital camera. Doug is a great guy, always there to help you. He's straight forward and is definitely willing to tell you what will make your work better! I'm taking another one of his classes next semester
The class was interesting and challenging. Few quizzes. Good at helping when needed. Enjoyed the class very much, but it was harder than anticipated. loved the the critiques with food! yum!
Better than digital photography, make sure to give yourself enough time for every project, be sure to show up to class, he does give out specific instructions every class period.
You have to take time out to do this. He offers his feedback with every print you make, so take advantage of it, even if you think it's just going to drive himyou crazy. Of course, if you ask him to tell you what to do, you'll get through printing much faster. You will probably make a lot of excuses, but if you try, you'll be fine.
Doug is my favorite instructor at Cuesta, this class was one of the most challenging classes I've ever taken. BUT- you will learn a lot and you will be challenged. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he knows his stuff and he wants to help you if you are brave enough to step up and put some effort into it. Also, if you like sarcasm, Doug is the man.
He is so helpful and you really learn a lot in this class! Be prepared to spend a lot of money on materials and time on this class. Everything you put into the class is worth it. I highly recommend taking this class with him he's awesome!
Great class! Learned a lot and now know how to manually handle a camera. Quiz almost every week from the textbook lectures. One midterm and final. The teacher really knows what he's talking about and would take the time to help a student out. Would take this class teacher again!
Really enjoyed this class. Lectures are very insightful and working in the dark room is fun. Teacher presents material professionally and really improves your take on art whether it's your major or not.
Doug gives you the skills in photo one to master all the basics of photgraphy. I feel like I have enough skills to create just about anyshot. Projects are fun and the potlucks every two weeks or so at the critique are killer. Highly recommend!
Fun class. He is pretty sarcastic and straight forward so try not to take it to heart. Enjoyed the class but could be stressful at times. Very helpful class to create a portfolio.
Helpful and wants you to succeed.
This class was very helpful for building a portfolio. You create an Digital and physical portfolio you can show to schools or work.
I've taken doug five times for all of his photography classes! I honestly believe he is the best teacher I have ever had. he knows what's up. he knows how to get you where you want to be in life, regardless of what your medium of work is. SO THANKFUL
Really a helpful class!
I gained a lot of skills in this class. Having a digital and physical portfolio at the end with the skills to be able to put one together for school or a job was a huge thing for me. The critiques were harsh, at least for me, and unmotivated me in the class. I learned a lot and if you are an art major you should take this class.
Be ready to work and eager to learn.
This class is more than a portfolio class. This class gives you the chance to explore yourself and what exactly you wish to do for the rest of your life! I discovered so much about myself it was surprising. I also find a lot of inspiration in the class from my classmates.
Portfolio isn't easy but Doug will make sure (if you put in the work) that you finish with a professional quality portfolio. Do the work, and he will help polish it with edits and rewriting. He's knowledgeable and accessible with a lot of practical wisdom and advice. He does well at bonding the class, making it personal. Potlucks. Great anecdotes.
The Class was awesome!
It was a great class, instructor is very clear and helpful!
I wouldn't have taken Doug's classes 5 times if I didn't completely respect him, admire him, and take the most out of every word that comes out of his mouth. Doug is by far the most knowledgable teacher I've experienced and he loves to share what he has learned over time. Doug has helped me pave my future, and every step I take is influenced by him
Doug Highland is a very sincere teacher who cares about your progress in the class as well as the student's personal lives. The class can feel a bit overwhelming at times but if you stay up with all the regularly scheduled work, it is difficult to fall behind. Expect to learn a lot of technical skills rather than strictly creative. Highly recced
great
Highly recommend his studio lighting class!
This class was the most inspirational and inspiring photo class I've ever taken. I will use all of the tools I learned in class to go on and get a photography job. Doug is an amazing and knowledgable teacher with the passion to help students learn.
Doug is a funny, engaging, hands-on instructor.
Really enjoyed Doug as a teacher, this is my second class with him and he has really helped push me in the right direction. His assignments that he has given almost all I can take out and use in real life situations. I really recommend this teacher if you want a push in the right direction.
Lighting is an expensive class; share supplies. Class is geared towards aspiring professionals, and some of the assignments are designed to prep students for assisting jobs. Great if you are serious about photography, irritating for casuals. He will help with universityjob applications if you ask in time. Focused on student success, tells stories.
If you are into photography than this lighting class is a must. This class makes you see lighting in a whole new way. If you put the time into the class then you will get a lot out of it. I would definitely recommend taking this class!!
Lots of Projects, get ready to work. Easy but have to do it. Lots of supplies to buy, helpful class
Doug isn't an easy teacher to study under, but if you're willing to swallow your pride and take instruction, you'll learn a lot from this class. If he likes you, he will be tough on you. Sometimes he's hard to pin down when you need help or questions answered, but when you get him his answers will be straightforward and to the point.
Takes a personal interest in each one of his students. Can be a bit of a micro manager sometimes but usually realizes that and backs off when it's needed. He challenges and expands your vision and is very skilled in his field. If you care heavily about photography or you're just looking to maybe play around with it this is the class to be in.
Doug is an awesome professor, he gives amazing feedback on your assignments. You need do your work but he will help you every step along the way. He will coach you through the darkroom processes and give helpful suggestions on how to improve your prints. He is by far the best photo professor at cuesta and is an awesome guy. I highly recommend him!
If you want to learn how to use a film camera and develop your photography skills, this is the class for you! Doug really is there for you and gives you constant feedback and help with everything like camera mechanics, darkroom issues, and artistic content. Its not an easy class if you like waiting for the last minute to do all of your projects.
This class exceeded my expectations! Doug is a great teacher and really knows his stuff. Things to know: you need a 35mm camera, film, & paper. I definitely spent a good penny on this class, but it was worth it. It's really satisfying to do the whole dark room process. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone with an interest in photo.
This class was an amazing intro to photography. I was always interested in film photo and I could not have asked for a better guide. This class IS time consuming so do not expect to take an easy art class. You will need to work outside the classroom but if you enjoy photography and learning about art then this class is great. Great class.
Much more difficult than 244. You need props and time. Don't throw away your notes from 244.
Doug is a great teacher, and very helpful and knowledgeable. He is also very sarcastic, but it is a "supportive sarcasm". The darkroom is a very cool experience.
If you're looking for an CSU GE class thats fun and pretty easy take ART 244. Just use your time wisely when working to finish assignments rather than procrastinate. Although completing the portfolio and assignments the day before is possible. I wouldn't recommend it from first hand experience.
Doug is a fun instructor, and he is extremely knowledgeable at his craft. He will give you great feedback, help you along the way and make you laugh the whole time. He can be extremely blunt, dry, and sarcastic; but don't take it personally. He just wants his students succeed @ everything, he will help you well beyond what is necessary if you ask.
great class if you have even the slightest interest in photography. Great for learning how to actually use a camera, setting the apature, shutter speed, iso, and camera accessories. The work for developing photos can be very frustrating but in the end your photos are great. Really recommend this class
Helpful teacher. Textbook is essential to quizzes, but you need to take lecture notes. Most of your grade is the portfolio (the photos you take) so you need to come to class and stay for lab to make sure you make good prints.
He is a great teacher, really willing to help you whenever needed. He truly wants you to succeed and wants you to grow as photographers. i would highly recommend taking this class if you want to get better at photography but also have fun. just make sure to devote time to your projects and you will do great
This class is for those who are interested in further developing their photographic knowledge or those who have no experience at all. He was always available to give feedback and help with any project I had. Great instructor and a must take!
Great professor. Class is fun to be in, assignments are interesting. He is very helpful wants his students to do well, I would def take his course again.
Doug is a great person. Really relatable. He will give you really good advice. If you do your HW and do what he says, you'll get an A. Class is relatively expensive. So if you're broke, take another art class. You definiteley have to work for you're grade! If you're into photography, take this class. Worth it!
Doug is definitely straight forward. You have to work and put in the time (usually a little extra in the lab) but if you do, you'll pass. DO NOT take this class for an easy A. Doug will give you as much help and feedback as you need. He's very nice, but don't try to BS your way through this course. Worth it. My skills definitely improved.
Always available for questions, and gives great feedback on how to better your photography. Also gives great advice on things outside of his class to think about for the future. Fun teacher, recommend this class and teacher!!
If you're worried about cost, this class isn't for you as supply costs really add up. If you miss class, you will get behind and it's hard to catch up. Must have availability outside class during the day to go on photo shoots. Doug is really into what he does and is a professional. He knows what's good and what isn't- and will express that to you.
Doug may be a bit strict but he is very reasonable. If you want to take this class you must be really committed to it and be ready to spend money for it. If you really like photography and really want to expand your abilities then this is the class for you. Do not take this class if you are not serious about it.
Really awesome class! I'm not into art so I figured I would take a photo class and I'm really happy I did! I learned so much and it was such a fun class. Doug is great and works really well with you on assignments! I highly recommend taking his class!
BEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN HANDS DOWN
Doug is one of the most amazing teachers I have ever had. He is a very frank and hilarious guy who lets you know exactly what he wants out of your work. He gives great feedback and is very helpful, you just have to be willing to ask for help. This course will make you more creative for sure. Take Doug.
As long as you do the assignments you'll be fine. Just don't procrastinste because you get plenty of time to do your work and last minute will be stressful. The usual.
The assignments were fun and out of the box. I learned a lot and my photography greatly improved. I can't wait to take Doug's class next semester!
He is super helpful and really knows what he is talking about! This class is a lot of fun and very hands on! If you love photography you will love it even more after you take this class! We were always laughing and making jokes! The quizzes and test are pretty easy! The class is a little expensive but worth it!TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
He gives great feedback. Highly recommend.
Great class with a very knowledgeable and hilariously honest and direct teacher
Doug is cool and pretty hot. Take this class.
Doug is sassy and a wonderful teacher. He is passionate about photography and recognizes his students ability to progress and encourages them to work hard. Taking more photos again specifically to have him has a teacher again.
Excellent instructor and human. He is a sass master. Prepare to be sassed. He does a good job at bringing the class together. 10/10 would take again.
Great professor! Definitely taking his Photo II class next semester. He's very helpful in coming up with ideas for assignments. if you're willing to put in the work for the class. It's not a hard class, but you gotta do the assignments. Manager your time and don't fall behind on assignments!
I had initially signed up for this class thinking it was a digital photography class. I am very glad that it turned out to be a film photography class. Learning the basics through film has changed my entire perspective on photography. I highly recommend you take this class before you take digital. It has helped me become a better photographer.
In Photo 2 learn more about content, famous photographers, and your own style. Doug really pushes you to reach your full potential, you'll end up creating work you never thought you'd be capable of doing. He creates a comfortable environment for everyone to voice their opinions and share ideas. Amazing instructor, great class + food at critiques
He is an extremely helpful teacher that pushes you even when you don't want to be pushed. This class has been perfected over years to make you as an artist to be successful. You're required to keep a notebook, it is your key to success. *Take during your last Fall Semester before you transfer or graduate* More work you have allows a better outcome.
This class pushed me to move past my insecurities about my artwork. I was so afraid of not being able to achieve the high standards I had set for myself, that I wouldnt even try to paint. Doug did more than just teach a class, he provided us with so many resources and tools to launch us into our next phase.
Doug is love. Doug is life #douglife No but seriously Doug is passionate about what he does and gives great feedback. Expect to do some text book work, but not much. Since this is the intermediate Film Photo, there aren't much technicalities to learn as far as shooting goes. But you do get to experiment other printing and developing methods.
His class is fun and to be honest it is an easy grade. You will have to spend some money in supplies that can add up so be ready.
Doug teaches a great class, and has fun doing it. Having little to zero knowledge of how to work a camera or take photographs at the beginning, I left the class enjoying photography and feeling confident in my ability to do so. Doug is patient and will help you become a better photographer.
Doug is a really great teacher and made me appreciate photography. He is truly involved and will help you be successful in this class. Highly recommend taking this course if your schedule allows.
Doug is out there trying to help people succeed,
Great class! Doug is an excellent teacher, very thorough in his explanations about how you can improve your photos. Would definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn how to take better photos, whether film or digital.
Sweetest jerk in the world
His alt photo process class is only offered every other year in the spring, and I've never had more fun, learned this much or been so inspired from a college course in my life.
Fun class. Great professor.
Doug was very helpful in giving attention to detail, and has helped me put some work together for future art shows. He is informative, you can see how much he loves art and seeing the work of his students.
Doug is a library of information on everything darkroom photography. If you have a question he will mostly likely have an answer and if he doesn't he will help you find it. The course is very well organized, full of cool alternative film techniques and leaves room for you to create new things you may have not thought of before.
Critiques are fun and helpful; potlucks and laid back critiquing is comfortable with peers. The Alt Processing class can get stressful with a lot of new processes with multiple assignments, but awesome people and killer teacher. Definitely recommend this class.
I loved the class even when I was frustrated and complaining.
Love the darkroom time!
He's an academic pusher, he will make you do your best even if you are an uninterested student BUT if you show enthusiasm or passion for photography/imagery/art in his class then be prepared for an amazing mentor, you put in the extra effort and Doug will double down. Also, he's a preeeetty attractive art teacher, just try and pay attention.
Doug is a great teacher. I have taken this class before but with a different teacher, I highly recommnd Doug over all the other professors. Hi will work with you if your having trouble out of class and you will learn more about your camera from him then any other professor.
Doug is a homie. He makes the class so fun and interesting. If you are behind, he will go out of his way to get you back on track.
Doug is a Real Gem
Doug truly cares about your well being as a person not just a student, excellent instructor and great interactive teaching style .
At the beginning of this class I thought I knew everything. By the end I realized I knew nothing. Doug taught me that.
Doug is an amazing professor! Very helpful inside and outside of class, whether it be about class work or personal matters. One professor you'll meet and can definitely make an impact on your life. Overall he is a great professor. I would most definitely take him again for another class.
Doug is fantastic!!!! His critiques are direct and helpful. I learned SO much from him. Be aware that he WILL push you to produce more work + develop series to define your style. He prepares you perfectly to apply to schools, so if you want to be a competitive candidate, Doug is an amazing and inspiring coach. He really cares about his students
Doug is such a passionate teacher, he truly cares about his job and his students. Learned a lot from his class and would highly recommend to anyone. He can be a little sassy sometimes but that only adds to his personality.
Great class! Doug is great really cares about the subject and is very knowledgeable. Would take him again! Be prepared to pay though, he expects you to be able to afford materials and have time out of class to work on projects.
Hi Doug I love you. One of my fave teachers ive ever had, super funny and knows his stuff. He teaches this stuff with a passion and makes sure you understand whats happening. He isn't condescending if you come into this class not even knowing how to hold a camera. 10/10 recommend taking photo with him
Super helpful even when not working on class assignments, always good feedback but sometimes gives tough love
Super fun class. Very project based and Doug knows his stuff about photography. He genuinely cares about you learning how to work a camera and a scene. Worth the money and the effort! (there's effort but it's fun effort)
Portfolio and Highland go hand in hand. He has been around the block so even though he may come off as pompous he knows his stuff. This class made me a better artist and was one of the most influential art classes I've taken at Cuesta. I recommend this class to any artist who is trying to get organized and become a professional artist.
One of the best courses I've taken, including those at the University level. If you want honest and helpful critiques on your work, wish to know where to go next in the the art world, and how to get there, Doug provides solid advice and a great collection of resources. Willing to help students outside of class. Expects plenty of participation.
Professor really pushes you. Very enjoyable and and challenging at times. Learned quite a bit with this class. I wish critiques were a little more constructive, instructor could have steered the class in that direction.
Doug Highland is an outstanding professor. He suffers no fools so get ready to work for your grade. Doug clearly cares about photography and his students. His passion for the art form is contagious. If you are thinking about expanding your horizons as a visual artist (and you enjoy a dry sense of humor), I cannot recommend Doug Highland enough.
This was an absolutely inspirational class. Alternative Photo Processes really allowed and encouraged me to be creative and express my own vision. Doug is an amazing teacher whose willing to work with you as long as you're showing up and putting in the effort. Start your work early and talk to Doug if you're stuck/stressed and you'll do great.
Very fun class but supplies can get a little pricey.
Doug is dope.
Starting off this class was difficult being a photographer already, but once we really got into the grooves of things, it became more enjoyable and I started to learn things i didn't already know. Highland is great at interacting with his students and he really does care about how you do in the class. Just make sure to keep up on your work!
It's very time consuming and you're more likely to come in outside of class to finish the assignments. Other than that it's a fun class and he's very patient and helpful. Highly recommend taking the class.
He's a cool professor. Showing to class matters because he knows how much you care about the class and the effort you put into it. He can be a sassy man but really understanding. Photography is his passion, so he becomes really inspirational.
Previously, my knowledge about photography wasnt that vast. I knew some but not every technical term that comes with it. After this class I could finally understand all that photo language that photographers use all the time. Doug guides that entire class with ease, makes things incredibly simple, and gives great feedback.
Hes a funny, cool and has a great sense of humor and gives shade, but its definitely worth it to take his class. Photo 1 is an awesome class to take and you learn a lot from both ditigal and film photography in his class. He has a special kind of music taste thats one of the artist hes listens to lol.
Doug is a charismatic, funny, & caring teacher with an extensive film-photography background and a real passion for photo & teaching. The class is less lecture, and more learning by doing. While you are "doing" a lot, I.E. always in the dark room working on your pieces (the class is made up of 6 final pieces to make one final portfolio), it's fun.
I knew nothing about photography, especially with black and white film and using an old 35 mm camera. Doug taught me everything i know now today. He is a caring professor, good at listening, and has made photography something that is fun for me. I would highly recommend this professor to anyone that wants to learn this type of art.
I took Doug for photo 2 at Cuesta. He really helps get you thinking about how you can apply your art in the real world. He helped push me creatively and always encouraged me. Do not take this class if you are limited on time. Taking film photography takes time! But its so worth it! Plus Cuesta has a great film lab and an environment full of friends
Doug is a very helpful professor if you have any questions or need any clarification on what to do. He gives useful feedback that gives me insight on what I can try in my photos. He can be sassy at times but he has the best intentions.
Doug is an amazing teacher. I had him for photo244 and it was an amazing class. You learn a lot about film photography and get to use all the skills that you learn with each assignment. Dont be afraid of the cost, Doug is ready to help you save every penny you can. 100% recommend this class.
I cared about this class because I respect this teacher and his opinion actually had value to me so it made me actually try in this class. He is very helpful as well as knowledgeable and he is really into photography
Do you like Taking Photos? Do you like chillin in the darkroom listenin to music w/ less taste than last weeks sandwich? Ifso this class is the class FOR YOU! Doug isa Critical teacher but he's always on point with his statements and in the end, it has restructure but bettered my Skills If you want to view things from an artist POV Doug is the GOAT
Doug's a star. He is an extremely helpful and supportive instructor. The corse is fun and rewarding but is time consuming. I would recommend any of Dougs photo corses as a way to learn a new skill.
A good class that really pushes your creativity to the next level
great teacher
Doug is inspiring.
Doug is the best teacher you will ever have, yes he's very sarcastic but he honestly wants the best for you and thats hard to find in a college professor. Take his class!
Great class. Great teacher
Great teacher, super fun class, if you are ever confused on an assignment just ask Doug he is always there to help. Also make a good amount of time in your free time to go shoot.
I 100% recommend this class. I learned way more than I expected and would always look forward to going.
I felt challenged to try more techniques of photography, and I was also inspired by other students work... I really benefitted from our regular Critiques and felt like I am coming away with a critical yet knowledgeable eye for art and photography alike... I really enjoyed the initial Critique when we analyzed Picasso's Guernica...
If you are an art major, this class will help you gain confidence in your work and help you to solidify who are as an artist/professional and where you want to go. Actually, it would help any major because you end up with both a physical and digital portfolio that includes things like a statement of intent, cover letter, inquiry letter, and resume.
He is tough, but friendly and he earns the respect of the whole class.
Be expected to pull out your wallet for this class, about 150-200 when all said and done. Very hands on amazing class which makes you learn a whole lot of information about film photography. Doug is a cool guy. If you have to take an art class or are looking for a film photography class, take this class, you won't be disappointed.
I've heard so many positive things about Doug that made me want take this class. I came in with high expectations and I'm shocked to see that he's extremely smug and filled with self-importance. I'm in his hybrid P1/P2 class and there are so many interruptions that make me want to drop and get a W. What a letdown.. Hybrid classes suck.
It'd be hard to find an instructor more willing to work with you and provide all the resources possible so you succeed. I'd recommend taking any course that Doug is teaching.
There is a lot of work - reading, writing and assignments due in his classes. This class can get complicated quickly if you don't keep up. You might want to make sure you balance your class load if taking his classes. But his classes are definitely worth it for the art major or art transfer student.
Ive had a lot of professors throughout the years, and I can tell you without any doubt that Doug is the best Ive ever had. He will hunt you down to do the work, but only because he truly wants to see you succeed. Ive taken 4 courses with him, and Ive taken more than just content away from each class. Take his class, youll be glad you did.
Doug is very approachable and thoughtful in his delivery of feedback, critique, and suggestions. His classes are what you make of them- if you put in the work, your work will improve.
Doug Highland is a great teacher who cares about his students and their success. He is really understanding of students having lives outside of school, which is not the case for all teachers. His class has a really warm, inviting, and fun atmosphere to it & he is also really accommodating to students with disabilities, which is a big one for me!
Doug was one of the best teachers I've had at cuesta college, he is really forgiving and caring. I could tell he had a real care for his students and pushing them to be better photographers. highly recommend!
Doug was a decent teacher. The portfolio class is heavy in digital creators and physical art. He is a photographer and I don't think his critiques or advice were much help to those making portfolio in these areas. Also being honest his lecture are repetitive and full of tangents that are at your expense. Goes over in time almost every singles.
Doug was a good professor but a little frustrating as he is competitive and will push you to be your best self. If you want a redo on any assignment you have an opportunity to get a better grade.
Dough is a great professor but he will be a pain in your ass the entire semester. He will push you in your work but at the end of it you will have a better product than what you started with, regardless if you can read his handwriting or not. Overall glad I took the course, but be prepaired!
I took Doug's Photo I class and it was my favorite class I have taken at Cuesta. The content is engaging and nearly everything is hands-on work, and the class is usually small so everyone gets to know each other. Both Doug and the TA, Richard, are very understanding of everyone's situation and willing to help out with work or materials if needed.
Doug is a great teacher! Very knowledgeable!
