I would be a little scared to take an advance Stats from the knowledge I gained.
Very easy, tests are easy and so are quizzes.
Nice gut, did not make us buy book which was nice. Is sold on his way of doing things, which are very good. Loves to talk in the third person and is very proud of himself. But overall a good teacher
He is maybe half as smart as he thinks he is. But if you are going to have perfect attendence, this is your guy. He is easy and he doens't make you buy a book, but don't miss class, there is no book to read up on what you missed.
He is REALLY arrogant, and knows it. He definately has personality flaws, but is a dedicated teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches, and takes it seriously. Theres homework everynight, and he expects participation. I would take him again.
Mr. Holmes comes off as really arrogant at first, but once you get to know him, he's really cool. He'll help you out on grades and stuff if he knows you are learning in his class. He knows his stuff and makes his class fun. attendance is a must though.
not too difficult of a class. requires homework every night, but if you do it and understand it you will do fine on the tests. usually has a quiz every week on whats been covered the last week of class. you will also learn some about golf from this class!
He is horrible, he doesn't teach very well. He believes he we should all be as good at math as he is
He is a HORRIBLE teacher, and he is extrememly arrogant. If you take this class, you are stupid and you better plan on having a awful semester. He expects you to learn calculus from the book, and his tests come from other calculus books in the library.
He is extremely arrogant, but its funny. Calc. is hard to begin with, but he's a good teacher. Makes sure at least a couple people get A's.
get a grip people... you're in the class to learn the material. sure it might be a lot of work, but you should've known that coming into the class. easy to understand and a nice guy outside of the classroom. take it if you really want to learn.
He spoon feeds you the material, if you can't get an A in his stats class then you're just plain stupid. He is a little on the cocky side though.
I found myself working really hard in his class, and was definitely rewarded accordingly. Mr. Holmes is the type of guy who will challenge you and then give you a decent grade when its all said and done....I definitely recommend him.
Take him for stats, but DO NOT MISS CLASS. He lets you go early, and you don't have a book (nice) so if you miss class you are ****ED. But he will do everything to catch you up if you make the effort.
OK teacher. If you can deal with sarcastic comments, you'll ace the class.
You will think he is a jerk or a little creepy at first. If you like organized teaching and all the help you need you will grow to like him. I've had him twice, he can be hard but you will learn the material step by step.
if you don't put forth any effort, he'll be a real jerk, you show him some effort and he'll love you, gives you many chances to improve your grade, had an F at midterm, and a B+ for the semester, not bad eh?
Greatest math teacher I have ever had. He knows he knows everything about stats, but shouldn't he? He might seem cocky, but he is really just extremely confident--with good reason--that he is a great teacher. Definitely take him for stats.
This class preapares stucent for Math 105. Well this semester was the worst. Because of this class I am changing my major. Holmes may be good teacher but not a good math 101 teacher. I went to Math Lab a couple of times and still don't get it.
He taught the course well and it was understandable, but he has a bad attitude. Pulled aside all seniors on the first day and said we better not cry to him when we are failing at the end of the year. Wrote nasty note on a test i did poorly on.
Wonderful! He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Always willing to help! No book, class is a must, do your homework, and an outstanding teaching method. I really loved him.
Too much discouragement and didn't care if the student succeeded or not. He could at least be somewhat positive.. and not always put the students down all the time.
He doesn't like students and you can tell cause all he talks about is himself. How he struggled in math at our age and how he attacked each problem. Doesn't teach he just sits there and makes you feel dumb. Don't do it his way its wrong b/c hes perfect.
I took Math 101 during Spring 2004 semester. I did not pass the class. Mr. Holemes may be hard on his students, but he still is ok. I rememeber him telling our class "If you can't get it you should choose another major. Well I did choose another majo
Although the material is not hard and he makes it fiarly clear, he sucks as a teacher. got a really bad grade on a test and he wrote on it, "You aren't really coming back to get this are you?" He could of just said see me for help but was a jerk instead.
"Arrogant" sums him up nicely. No notes. Goes straight to the chapter review and works out problems on the overhead. I got all the extra help I could and still failed. Rude to his students, very sarcastic, and likes to brag about his abilities. Stay way, by all means.
I liked this teacher. He's very thourough in teaching and goes over everything, takes any questions. You have to sit in the front of the class to get the material. He is straight forward and blunt, he can be rude but it's quiet funny. hes been in math fro years so he knows his****, DO THE HOMEWORK
He is awesome! I came into this class really afraid that I would fail and I did so well! He is so helpful and encourages lots of questions. very good style of teaching. All around great guy.
HORRIBLE class...only gives 4 grades the whole semester (3 tests and the final) monotone voice...he's a cool guy, but not a good teacher. If you want to leave class confused and with a headache everyday, take him.
If you want to go to class and hear that your are goin to fail then take him. I love math but hated going because he is so self-absorbed. He said "character flaw, I like to make people feel bad" He is just an awful person and shouldnt be around other people. Not a hard teacher but just a jerk!
Took him for algebra..scares the crap out of you at the beg. of semester. He's kinda cocky but can be nice, if ur a decent math student trust me you can make it. Tests are the HW, do that you'll do fine. Doesn't take attendence but will sometimes notice if u aren't there when he wants to call on you
I thought he was a great teacher! As long as you do your homework, you'll do fine in the class!
He is very knowledgeable, and knows precal like the back of his hand. He makes the class hard and homework is assigned every day. If you struggle with math, look for another professor!
If you are looking forward to constant insults from a self-centered teacher who loves the ladies he is it. A real $#^%$#^%@!.
Arrogant, yes. But he is a good teacher and will spend all semester preparing you to be a good calculus student.
ARROGANT! The only positive aspect of his class was his homework assignments reinforce what you learn. Do not waste your time learning logarythms, they are not on the final exam and never have been. He enjoys insulting his students and speaking to them as if they are morons.
what a jerk,
Awesome teacher. If you do the homework then you'll pass the tests. Ask questions about anything you do not know and he'll help. Makes math easy to understand for people who aren't mathematically inclined.
I don't know why people don't like him...He's the best math professor I've had! He goes over several examples in class and tells you exactly what will be on the test. If you can't take a joke, this class is not for you. Do your homework, go to class, ask questions...its not hard.
I had his precalc class last semester and he was fabulous. His tests are challenging but definately prepares you for the final better then any of my friends teachers did. A little intimidating at first cuz he memorizes everyones names the 2nd day of class but passionate bout math.

I took his Math 101 class in spring 2004. He give a lot of homework. He would not teach from the book at all. He told us "If we can't do algebra, we can not do business calcus(which is hard class. I change majors and I feel great. I am sorry for anyone who has to take his Math 101 class. Not Me.
Holmes is a very intelligent professor. The people who don't like him are the ones who don't want to try. He gives you his phone number to reach him at home if you ever have a question. He is sarcastic, but if you have a sense of humor, you'll enjoy his class. I'm taking him again for 105.
Great class. We didn't use the book at all. The handouts that he gave were very helpful and prepared you for the tests.
this man is satan. Had a B all semester even with mono. Had excuses from the dean of undergrad and infirmary and he still tried to fail me due to absences. I got a W in a class i had a B in all semester b/c the man is WAY to arrogant to help his students even when it is legitimate. STAY AWAY
To the freshman class of 2009 don't take this class, unless you are really good in Algebra.
He's very smart and has a great since of humor. you can count on at least 2 days of canceled class because he takes golfing trips. He gives out his home phone if you have questions and doesnt check homework. He does go through the material super fast and if you havent had algebra in awhile then you might want to take someone else because he expects you to know it and will not review it. Tests are easier than the homework because he doesnt ask you the hard questions and tells whatwill be covered.
I am HORRIBLE at math. While I make A's in most other classes, I have withdrawn from this class twice and failed it once. Holmes finally made me get it - teaches things pretty slowly. He is very good at explaining things and he's kinda funny. He will tell you exactly what will be on the test. He's cocky but smart enough to back it up.
He is a great guy and keeps class interesting. It might just be Business Calculus that is hard, not him. The class moves very fast, but if you can keep up Holmes is good. He is very helpful, either after class or in his office.
dis dude sucks
As a math teacher he made the class hard. That is why I am not a Business major anymore. I took this class with Holmes and I did not like it. Good Luck incoming Buiness majors.
ARROGANT....do not take him for business calculus.
he's great. i was scared about taking stat but he makes it so easy. if you do the minimal homework he assigns you'll do fine in his class. i'd never had a day of statistics in my life and after doing what he says i made a 100 on the first test.
The WORST of the WORST! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS - no matter what! There are other choices that are much better than what you will get from this "teacher" / real estate salesman
I don't know what you guys are whining about. Mr Holmes is a fantastic teacher! Everyone knows he's arrogant, including him, but so what? He knows his sh*t and he obviously spends a lot of time preparing his classes because he doesn't even use a book for his stats class! I enjoyed his class and thought that he made everything easy to understand.
Mr. Holmes is awesome! He provides you with the problems you need for your tests and tells you why something is the way it is... he doesn't just expect you to know it. I would definitely take him.
I took Stats in high school so I knew what to expect. Mr. Holmes explains everything step by step. You don't need to buy a book b/c all his notes and homeworks are on the internet. He is a very good teacher. I highly recommend him. He pulls a few jokes and stories every once in awhile. Definitely an easy A.
He is really arrogant and annoying, when you ask questions he will make you feel dumb. Class moves pretty quick but only 4 tests and he tells you exactly what will be on them. Only collects HW about 4 times, and homework is harder than tests, he generally asks the really basic questions on tests.
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS 500 homework problems and he collects EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM he is annoying, cocky, and arrogant. dont take him if you want free time DO NOT TAKE HIM thats a fact ask a question hope he isnt a jerk about answering to make you feel stupid.. cause i forgot we arent those people in "the 1600's" history of CALC who CARES?!
Amazing man! You might have to ask him to explain things a few times but he will teach until you understand it. Doing 500 problems is sort of a **** but the HW problems will always be harder than the easy test problems. He tells you exactly what will be on tests so nothing unexpected. He's arrogant but in a hilarious way, if you ask me. Take him!
Hands down, my favorite professor at the college. He is extremely intelligent and knows what he is talking about. I am a past student but still go see him for advice. He is quick to learn your name and won't forget it, so don't think about skipping classes. Ask him to tell you about how to be a millionaire by the time you're 40...good story.
Wow, easiest class besides Gym at this college. Did hw once before the test and made A's.
OMG he is the devil. hes so cocky an rude. you tell him you have to go home for surgery and going to miss a class, he yells at you, (like im sure anyone wants surgery anyway) hes so annoying, class was ugh!!! 500 problems was obsurd. class was obsurd. OBSESSED WITH HIMSELF! thinks cause hes a real estate AGENT hes the ish... i hate him a lot!
He knows his stuff and isn't hard at all, but he is a complete *****. He told us to find and use his tests because he doesnt change them, so i did, yet he changed the last test after the whole speech. I didnt exempt the exam even though i had an A, and you needed an A to exempt. But there is no book for the class, which is another plus.
definitely my favorite teacher. he is very sarcastic but in a funny way. he is very straightforward and tells you exactly what you need to do in order to do well in his class. there is no textbook and the homework is very manageable. only four tests and if you get an A on all of them you can place out of the exam! definitely take this!!
he was def one of my favorite teachers here at cofc. he is a very smart man and knows exactly was he is talking about. he makes the material very easy to learn and understand. Only grades in the class are 4 tests and final if you have to take it. Homework isnt too bad and there is no textbook! I would definitely recommend taking his class!
Personally, I suck at math but Holmes was really good at explaining everything clearly in class. There's no textbook and he only assigns a few hw problems per night - do the hw and go to class and you'll be fine! It's not mandatory b/c he gives you answer sheets, but it's really helpful to do the problems! I'd definitely take him for math again!!!!
He seems arrogant, But he is actually just smart and successful and proud of it. He wants all of his students to succeed. He is the most well prepared teacher I have ever had. EASY if you just listen to him in class. No easier teacher for stats 104
horrible professor!! beware SNAP students. he will personaly degrade you infront of the entire class and single you out. After a 20 minute rant about snap is BS and they need to have a special diploma indicating so!!!! he doesn't stick to the syllabus and jumps aroun.d extremely diorganized!
i hated the man with a passion. extremely intimidating!! if you study your class sheet he gives you in the beginning of the semester you will pass. Be able to do everything on it front and back and you will pass.
Horrible professor!!!abosolutly bignot, shovanistic and narcistic!! Its all about his way or the highway. He will even himiliate you infront of everyone. Useless information to everyone else is necessary for him. DON'T EVER TAKE HIM!!!
Horrible horrible horrible. if you aren't good at math, do NOT take his class. he doesn't explain well, he makes humiliating comments about you if you get an answer wrong, and he doesn't give much help. the only good thing about this class was not having to buy a book
Doug Holmes is an amazing teacher. I've hated math my whole life until this class b/c i finally know what's going on. He's a very no b/s guy and his class is all meat - no real tangeants. He wants everyone to understand and do well. Definitely take this prof. especially if you are not good at math.
Arrogant. Talks about his inheritance but somehow still needs to teach AND be a real estate broker. After you finish his class he'll send you an email informing you of his real estate services. I'd rather die. And I'm sure C of C didn't give him permission to solicit.
He is a little arrogant, but has a sense of humor. Test come from book. The work is just review questions. He goes over the even ones in class but you have to do the odd ones at home to practice. Good teacher overall. THere will be days you hate him but you will love him too. Recommend him highly. I now understand math more because of him.
He is the best math teacher I have ever had. He doesn't use a textbook, he has his own website you print stuff off of. Everybody says statistics is hard but he made it extremely easy to understand and he is a step by step process you need to follow to do every problem and you need to do it his way. He only teaches part time but is amazing.
If you do the homework and pay attention in class, it's a guaranteed A...he is very arrogant as a person, but he know what he is talking about when he teachers.
There doesn't seem to be much middle ground on people's opinions, but if you can deal with him and do the homework, this is the best chance to get an A in gen-ed Stats. Doesn't use a book and will tell you exactly what's on the test. Average an A and you can exempt the exam. Inflated ego, but he knows his stuff.
arrogant, after taking the first test he spent a good 20 minutes talking about how if u made below an 80 on that test that you are a failure at life and how you should just give up on whatever major u are in. DONT MAKE MY MISTAKE AND SIT THROUGH HIS CLASS
Mr. Holmes is a good guy and may seem arrogant at first. As far as his first test goes in math 101 on linear equations, if you get below an 80 he says that math just is not your thing. In all honesty if you do get below an 80 you could not pass calculus. He is a teacher that has your best interest in mind and is a genuinely nice guy.
I feel compelled to alert people about this teacher.I've never had such a poor experience with a teacher. Im not the best at math but made an 81 on the 1st test-not bad.Told me I would and could never be a business major.I figured he was testing me so I stayed in the class-the material was not hard(I did it in HS). No office hrs.Hes in realestate
He is a really good teacher you just have to get pass his arrogance. Its going to be annoying at first but you learn to just ignore it. He will probably crush your dreams of being a doctor. He is very helpful just pay attention in class and you'll be fine.
Pretty arrogant, but very helpful. He will explain it to you until you understand. No textbook. Has detailed notes on his website. Uses studyguides that are right on the test. Homework is harder than tests so don't freak out. Doesn't really take attendence but remembers faces. More helpful to go rather than not. Overall, good experience.
I'm not at all a math person, but he makes it make sense. He is the best math teacher I've ever had. Some people may not like his attitude, but I think it makes the class interesting and makes you as a student WANT to do well to prove him wrong!
Holmes is the man! I would take another one of his classes just because he is funny and is a great teacher. He teaches in a way that is easy to grasp. The way he goes about teaching the material is in a way that he builds on ideas. He puts every lesson in the right sequence. His IQ can be found in P sub 99. Take his course!!!
Loved Holmes!! Got an A..so easy to do well when you pay attention in class. HW is not mandatory and he never collects it but if you do the assigned hw, you'll do well. All up to you in this class but it was easy overall. Holmes always explains everything very clearly and is funny and helpful.
Really great teacher! He tells you exactly what he wants and exactly what will be on your test. Very straight forward and as long as you come to class and do what he tells you to do, you'll do great. Even though he doesn't require you to turn in homework, DO IT!!
Great class. He makes it very easy to understand if you go to class and is very clear on what he wants from you. I would take every math class with him if I could. Definitely recommend him!!
If math is not an easy subject, then take Holmes. He is more than willing to explain any question you have and redo problems for the class. He is extremely cocky but it doesn't take away from the fact he is a really good teacher
Easiest math class I've taken in college so far, and great professor. There's no textbook, and his teaching style is different, but as long as you pay attention, do the hw, and practice the classwork, you can easily get A's on tests with minimal studying. If you have an A average on the tests by end of semester, he will let you exempt the final.
He will clarify anything you do not understand, all you have to do is ask. You do NOT need the book, bc all the stuff is online. He is one of the nicest math professors i have had. He has a sarcastic side, but it is all in fun. I would recommend him to anyone that needs to take stats and havent had any prior knowledge in that subject.
I took stats last year and had an A the whole year Holmes teaches the class differently from my high school teacher and it's either Holmes's way or the highway so I've been doing terrible this year. He's very confusing makes class harder than needs to be.
Holmes is the best math professor EVER! I was terrified going into a college math class but this class has been great due to his teaching skills. He is the master of explaining things on a level each individual can understand. He is funny and doesn't hold a boring class. TAKE HIM! He is passionate about what he teaches and it definitely helps.
Mr. Holmes is awesome! He only teaches one class because he is a real estate agent. He loves seeing his students succeed. He also has a sense of humor and is one of the only teachers I know that came back the second day knowing all of our names. He's brilliant. He also doesn't use a textbook, so thats a plus!
This professor will be really sarcastic and is not always the nicest when it comes to you making errors. But if you ask for help he will help. To be honest, i have mixed emotions about this guy. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK, you dont need it! And he picks who HE wants to exempt the final, so talk to him and keep an A average for a higher chance.
Easily the best math teacher I've ever had. He explains everything in such a way that it just makes sense. Also hilarious
Loved him. Was nervous going into stats but he was so clear and helpful. I got an A, which means I exempt the final. Homework is not mandatory, but is sooooo helpful if you do it. He's funny too. Take him!
Mr. Holmes may seem a bit conceited at first, but overall he's a nice guy. All the HW is online on his website. Weekly HW, no quizzes, just 4 tests. If you pay attention and rework the problems done in class and the HW, you will do just fine. Just do the work! Oh yeah, no textbook!
Pretty arrogant (spent the entire first class telling us how smart he is), but if you ca get past that, the classes aren't that bad and it's not too difficult. However, office hours are WAAY far and few between. He teaches as a side job, so you have to make an appointment to get any assistance.. Does NOT use a textbook, and make sure to do the hw!
Great teacher! I am not a fan of math, but he made me really enjoy stats. Probably one of my favorite professors at the college. He knows his stuff and is willing to help you if you participate/talk in class. Homework is optional, but the questions are almost the exact same as the test so do it! Would totally recommend this class
Good professor overall. The homework is optional, but is vey helpful if you do it. Nice guy, but does like to talk about how smart he is. He is willing to go over things if you don't understand them in class.
Professor Holmes is an awesome teacher. As long as you do the homework, pay attention, and ask questions when you don't understand something you will pass this class. Also if you end the semester with a 90 or above, you do not have to take the final which is awesome.
