You're really nice, well done!
a really nice guy, has a terrific rapport with the class, can be unclear
Notes and lectures are vague and long. No clear idea of what the main points are. Classes are hard to sit through
this prof's midterm was extreamly unfair, to put it mildly. the lectures were enough to put cocain addicts to sleep, and the not a feat not easy to accomplish. the midterm did not reflect the lecture, the book, or the notes. overall, it was not fair, and in the words of Stewie "BLAST!!!!!"
good prof. asks alot of unclear questions. notes can be clear sometimes. exams were kinda nice, involve alot of thinking.
avoid dr. doug johnson! at ALL COST or you will PAY THE PRICE...(very expensive one)
Very bad professor. I am a straight-A student but I ended up getting a mere C on his BIO1110 class. I hate him.
Should not teach 1st/2nd yr courses. Examines at a 4th yr level and asks very specific questions that are not expected.
he does not really prepare us for the kinds of questions he asks on exams.
Very good prof. He really challenge you to learn the material inside and out. In order to perform well on tests, go to classes and take very good notes (that's how I got A+). A bit harder than other regualr profs.
Very challenging prof, tough and thorough questions asked on tests. Word of advice: GO TO CLASS!!!You'll regret skippng. Hard to get an A in his class.
Very difficult professor. Tends to be condescending but maybe because he's so smart. If you're not already and A+ sudent, you can't really do that well.
If you don't understnad, go to to class and ask him for help. If you don't understand and you don't do anything, you're doomed. Just get help if you don't get it.
Nice guy, very knowledgeable but notes are vague and not very accessible outside of class.
Professor Johnson is a great professor. Read the textbook with his notes and you are guaranteed an A. He is very nice, which makes it easy to ask him questions. I really enjoyed taking biology with him.
Johnson is not on my "nice" list. He expects you to know everything already. He has his favorites, and if you're not one of them he singles you out and picks on you. When he asks your opinion he contradicts you and/or makes fun of you. Clearly, he has a very high opinion of himself. It would have been an interesting course if he wasn't teaching it.
I took Bio4174, Bio4900, bio4115 with him and think he is an amazing professor. He relies on understanding and not on memorizing. his teaching is good and if you take his course ask questions and get to know him.
a very nice person. He loves helping students, and he is always smily when he answers your questions. His jokes are not the best but better than the ones my last yr's bio profs attempted. =) Like him.
lets be honest, hes a nice guy but not that interesting to listen to haha. i know you read these dr johnson my advice is to not talk near the level of monotone all the time and swear a little bit to catch the students attention, every student likes a rebel prof
decent prof. Lectures are fairly interesting. He has a little too much faith in the people at Maestro however...
He's definitely a hard prof. His class is pretty demanding and it's really hard to do well without reading the book and going to all the lectures. I found his lectures to be pretty interesting. He's a good speaker and has jokes so lame they're funny. He gives breaks which is pretty sweet.
This prof definately connects with the students. He is friendly and you are never affraid to ask a question. The material was harder than expected so you definately needed to attend class. I found so far he was the best prof I have had in University.
Interesting lecture material, though his exam questions are tough and very specific! He tries really hard to be a good professor, and connect with the students, giving breaks in the middle of class, and telling jokes (although they are sometimes not the best).
He is an unfair prof. We are 1st yr students, some with very poor backgrounds in bio, and find the in depth questions on your exams, dr J, to be mean. please listen to your students and see that we try so hard in your class, and it results in a poor grade. I am sure you can relate from when you were a student, please have some mercy on your student
You are supposed to learn in University, not be tortured.unfortunately Dr. Johnson believes the latter. I was very close to going to the dean to complain about his ridiculous tests that do not reflect class material at all. I wouldn't be suprised if a future student does..he is absurd and should not get away with his crazy methods of "assessment"
agree with comment below...i enjoyed bio before being in his class
as a prof his lecturing is ok.he tries to connect but is pretty lame.He is very stubborn and likes to do online midterms that crash even though he is told it will happen.examinations are ridiculous and specific about the most useless things barely mentioned. His courses are mostly memorizing.and there is too much uselessinfo crammed in for no reason
This professor is very unclear of what his expectations are. Exam material does not reflect what was covered in class. Unfair midterms.
I totally agree with other comments! Sadly there is no other prof teaching this course. Midterms focus on the most useless, minutia of biology. I had 90s throughout high school on this material. The worse you do the better he feels about himself. I find his lectures cluttered and unclear. Too bad this class is mandatory for science students!:(
Worst professor i have ever had. I have been getting As in all my other classes and im scared that I might have a near fail in this class! the midterm did not reflect class material or the textbook at all! questions about the most random specific things. boring prof too.
I'm very disappointed. Though I think he knows his material, his ability to teach it and is messed up. I totally understand the material and confirmed it using the textbook but his midterm didn't test us on any of it. I wish he was more clear about how to study it in a way to be test savvy. If you like science stay away from Johnson!
Good guy, terrible prof. I've been to every lecture, read the textbook, and understand the material really well--but still do terribly on midterms. His tests don't reflect what we covered in class. His lectures are very disorganized and it's hard to tell what's important to know and what's not. I'm pretty sure he's used to testing PhD students.
We are currently sitting in the last lecture with him. HAPPIEST DAY EVER. He does not explain things clearly and goes off on random tangents. Midterms were ridiculously specific. His podcasts don't make sense because all you hear is "this and that and this goes here and that goes there."
I'm so happy for this pathetic course to be over. This arrogant prof speaks over our heads using obscure terms (often without explanation) and cites labs none of us have heard of. He's forgotten what it is to be in 1st year and loves to use his vast knowledge to knowingly knock us down. I used to love biology; not so much anymore.
Brutal. I work hard and still do not so well. Usually rock 80s but not even close in this course. Online exams are stupid. This guy shouldnt be teacher 1st years.
This man is awful. Avoid his class. The exams and midterms are ridiculous, he does not make it clear what he wants students to know at all. Avoid at all costs.
Bad prof with bad notes and bad midterms. He seems to get pleasure out of making everything 10 times harder than it has to. He knows alot, and expects 1st years to know the most random and specific things that arnt found in his notes nor in the text. This man should retire already.
Worst prof I've had in first year. Has a frequent habit of going on tangents. Also frequents the terms "THIS, which we saw a few units ago", and "THIS, which we will see in a few lectures". Runs midterms online and states that "it's your responsibility if you disconnect or the server crashes". Impossible to listen to, monotone. Truly a 1/5 prof.
Honestly, worst prof ever. He talks so fast that it's hard to follow and then if you type what he says word for word, you realize your notes are littered with "this goes here then there and it happens". I'm not kidding. Midterms have nothing to do with what you learn.
Online midterms are faulty in so many ways & students get screwed over. Midterms cover material that you've never even seen. Lectures are so boring. Lecture notes & podcasts don't help. Prof doesn't explain things in a way that's understandable. Lots of angry complaints about him. Seriously, do whatever you can to avoid this guy.
HORRIBLE PROF! Run away from this class if you can! If you can't consider yourself screwed! If you think this will be like your Biology class in High School, THINK AGAIN! I had a 99% average in my High School Biology, and now I'm barely passing! This prof gives questions in the midterms that ARE NOT EVEN COVERED IN CLASS!
One of the most terrible profs you'll ever have. Leave his class if you can, unless you want to be tested on material that was never taught, and be expected to know indepth details he doesn't teach. Good luck, you'll need it.
Worst prof ever. Ive never failed a course in my life, and I'm scared to death that I might fail this one. He makes everything ten times harder than it really is. Avoid at all costs, he will make your life miserable.
Don't expect to do well if you have this prof. If all bio courses are gonna be like the ones he teaches then I never want to take bio ever again. Bio used to be my favourite subject. Now I hate it so much. I'm seriously considering switching into chemistry.
Awful, awful prof. SUPER BORING, slides are useless, rambles on about nothing in class, and is all over the place. He section on the final killed. Have fun in this class. Sucks cause no one else teaches it. Podcasts don't help cause it's just as bad as listening in class. Good luck to all of you who have him :S
Terrible prof monotone and boring. Lectures are useless. He can't teach/convey the lecture material. Podcasts are useless because he uses "this" and "that" when we can't see this and that. Jokes are lame. Rambles about things. Online midterms which are bad. Don't expect to do well. AVOID THIS PROF IF YOU CAN. the textbook taught me this course.
I don't understand why there are 20+ comments saying that he is the worst prof ever. Some concepts are hard to understand but this is university. Not everything should be handed out to you on a silver platter. Go and try to understand things on your own. I cant stand these people whining that they had 90s in HS. Overall, an ok prof with fair exams
The course may have been more clear if someone else had taught it. He had jokes to spice things up and overall lectures were pretty engaging. I enjoyed how he knew everyone who won a nobel prize and that he added things in the lecture beyond the course. Didnt like the tech problems online and how his lunch came before answering students questions
I'll tell you why there are 20+ comments condemning Johnson-because his course blows! The material really isn't that difficult-that's the point. He intentionally makes the class obscure. I've got friends at both Queens and McGill who couldn't believe how he runs this class;especially the stupid midterms which teach you nothing. Good riddance!
The material is not difficult, he MAKES it difficult. He throws obscure terms that we have never heard of to explain concepts. I'd like to see him in a class where the professor speaks Japanese, and then test him on Greek. That is how he runs his course- his lecturing is incomprehensible and midterms aren't either.Karma Dr. J, Karma will get you...
He is all about "treating us like upper year students". He is proud of his big philosophy but one thing he doesn't realize it that students in first year don't learn like it. I came out of his section of the course knowing nothing; I taught myself from the book. You can see that Gilmour even thinks he's nuts. She lectures properly and I learned.
His midterms are random, good luck studying. His teaching is awful, extremely disorganized! His final exam section was terrible, it appeared since Gilmour gave us very easy questions because she felt sorry for us. This prof needs to only do research, everything about him destroys first year students. Make sure to use all resources, e.g the textbook
I have reflected greatly on this course and truly feel that the science program at U of O is very mediocre at best. The supercilious attitude exemplified by prof Johnson is indicative of several science profs i've encountered-The arrogance is dripping off them. They wouldn't last in the private sector where results matter! I want my money back!
Read the comments below, they sum everything up nicely. If you take this class just be prepared to teach yourself everything, which means reading the textbook for absolutely everything... the night before the final was a long one. His assessments are based on the most random subjects barely mentioned during his lectures (if at all), good luck.
He's a nice enough guy, he just can't teach. if it can be avoided...drop out of his class. You won't regret it. The other professor could NOT possibly be any worse. On a few lectures he just copied and pasted notes from Wikipedia. I think I could have taught the course..lol.
This professor is simply horrible. The material from BIO1140 is not hard; Dr. Johnson makes it hard! Questions on midterms and exams DO NOT match up with what was covered in class. He brings up random terms in class that we have never even heard of to explain concepts. AVOID HIS CLASS - you will not regret it!
INTRODUCTORY biology - my donkey! Johnson's course is designed to screw you out of grades-plain and simple. It is not simply learning introductory concepts, but rather you are expected to have an ability to mind read. I studied a lot and learned little. I'm just hoping to pass so I don't have to see this guy again. VERY POOR!!
Worst professor I had in first year, bar none. Incomprehensible, dry, and arrogant. The textbook will be your only chance of understanding his material, but even the text doesn't suffice for learning all the material in this course. BIO1140 was THEE worst class, because of this man.
I didn't mind Dr. Johnson. I do agree with all of the comments stating he can be monotone. He does through out bio jargon however if you look up the definition it can really help to understand the material. His first midterm was unrelated to the lecture but I found his second very fair and representative of what we learned. final was tough.
The worst professor I've ever had. He constantly goes off topic in the lecture, causing it to be impossible to know what is required and what's not. He flat-out refuses to help his students, even when it is asked, instead very rudely rejecting them. Besides being a horrible professor, his antics show that he is a very disagreeable old man.
Worst prof! Midterms have nothing to do with lecture material. He refuses to help students, even during "office hours". This course's sole purpose is to steal away everyone's scholarships. Final was brutal. He is monotone and is rants about anything that comes into his mind. You never know, it may pop up on an exam >:(
first of all, the material he is teaching is dry and boring even tho he tries to make it intresting. secondly, his midterm reflects "NOTHING" of what he teaches in class. as a general guidline whatever he tells you is important don't study that, and what ever he skips through it is 100% on the test ! verry hard corse, poor study tool provided.
He seems like a friendly and intelligent guy, but is EXTREMELY hard to follow in class. He teaches as if we already know the material, he often goes off topic, and easily confuses you. It's hard to tell what is important for midterms & the exam. Textbook & internet are your best friends, believe me. I wish you luck!
Actually the worst prof I've ever had. Paying attention is the most difficult thing to do. He throws in a british accent on random words - really throws you off. He doesnt explain things well, and he goes through everything way to fast for you to be able to write notes in any type of readable language. Don't even get me started on the music breaks
very unpredictable questions, unreasonable and difficult questions. online midterms are pathetic and crash all the time. Bad class bad prof.
People are hating way too much, midterms were difficult but the final had no surprises. Lectures, although boring, are somewhat useful. Hard to follow the prof, but his slides are a goldmine. Read the slides and you will do well, use the textbook for a reference to clarify anything you cannot understand.
He rambles quite a bit, and his slides do not contain all the information required to accurately answer questions he gives you. The fact that his slides don't have all the answers is fine except that you can't' tell what he is talking about in class.
classes are too boring to attend, cant sit throught htere for more than half the class even when trying to pay attention. midterms are hard. STUDY
Its unfortunate that such interesting material has to be taught in such an awful manner. This is just a terribly organized course and it doesn't help that theres no support what so ever. If you can take this course in french.. please do. Unless this prof goes, this course will continue to be awful.
Himself as a teacher is awful. but i must say his tests were reasonable. if you can just rearrange everything he says so that it is in order, it makes sense. Its a mandatory first year course...what do you expect.
The only way to pass midterms and exams is to write down every single detail Johnson says. Listen to the podcasts, read the textbook and supplementary info and you should be ok. It's hard to get through one of his classes... he's SO monotone, goes off topic, I just write ever word that comes out of his mouth just in case. The exam was tough...STUDY
He's actually NOT as bad as everyone makes him seem. Yes, the course is very difficult, but if you put in some effort once in awhile, it's really not that bad. You CAN succeed: ask questions if you're confused, go to the DGDs, read the textbook/wikipedia and you will do fine :)
run away
His expectations are too high, specially if you have other tough courses. Material isn't that bad but the way he teaches it, and tests you on it is BRUTAL. AVOID if you can
Poor prof. Despite being a pleasant guy and putting up podcasts of the lectures, he fails to explain anything properly - I learnt everything from the textbook/friends/internet. His midterms/exam are hard because he fails to teach the material in class.
The problem with this guy is he talks to you like you already know the material, gets sidetracked often, explains stuff using experimental techniques you don't know about. He's nice though but not meant to teach.
Problem: 1) The concepts should be rearranged. e.g. Regulation shouldn't be taught after transcription & translation. I would say he should follow the book's sequence. 2) He assumed we knew too much. Dr. Katie spoon fed us her section but we came out of it understanding everything. Too pass his part, summarize the book before each class.
Run while you can
his midterms and exam are not as hard as everyone puts it. EVERYTHING WAS ON THE SLIDES. His teaching and clarity were horrible, but all the answers to the exam questions are on his slides. The exams were FAIR, even generous. Just the guy cant teach
By far the worst professor I have ever had. I can't even possibly imagine how someone would even be able to top him on that achievement. Worst professor of all time!
Okay, people are wrong when they say he's hard. He explains everything very clearly and is pretty funny! His midterm was FAIR. The problem with low class averages is BECAUSE THE MARKING SCHEME IS SO PICKY FOR THIS CLASS!!! You have to answer question in a VERY specific manner, or points are taken off/not given.
Ok he's not even bad lol and he seems so nice. I don't know why everyone's crying. It is hard to get a good mark in this course. However, if you read the textbook readings it will help.
He is not a good teacher, but he was fair when it came to content that he tested us on. There were no tricks. Read the textbook and his slides and teach yourself.
He presents in a boring manner and he doesn't explain things clearly. His evaluations are very difficult.
People say his class, but everything you need to know is on the slides. His multiple choice is tricky. Very difficult teacher, but nice man.
nothing was helping. exams and class material run parallel
Brutal... His exam questions are so vague it's unreal. HUGE PIECE OF ADVICE - Don't be a lazy bum, and LEGIT READ THE TEXTBOOK BEFORE CLASS - there's no other way to understand the material, and the assigned readings are like 4 pages per class. Do it. The way he speaks, the way he writes his ppts, and the way his questions are worded are just vague
kk yo, he aint that bad. Gilmour will screw you over, but he's a decent guy you just follow the textbook and try to decipher his ppts
Never gives full details on things just mumbles at the front of the class and expects you to get it, spoke with him after class a few times, he seems nice, but terrible at teaching.
Worst Prof. So monotone and boring. Arrogant and belittling. Marking schemes are just brutally awful.
He was a smart prof! But he expected to much. It was if he wanted to see who could possibly complete it, and not care how hard it was. His explanations were to in-depth and usually confused you more. He was a nice guy, but his marking scheme was way to hard.
This guy will make you hate Biology, very condescending, you have to go that extra mile just to pass. If you want to get an A then you better put all your other classes aside...
very nice guy but does not explain concepts well. gets confused in class and starts to talk about irrelevant things. DO THE BOOK READINGS. if you read the book you will understand the course, the material is very easy. exam questions were poorly worded and very vague and ambiguous. he said hes retiring in 3-4 years so wait if you can...
Terrible lecturer, you learn more, if any from watching the podcasts. When you have him, you learn more from just reading the textbook. His expectations for the exams are high. Even though you think you do well on an exam, you get your mark back, and you did terrible because whoever marked them was very picky!!!
If you can decipher his powerpoints you will do good, otherwise run while you can.
a very bad prof, hardly knows how to teach and lecture. nice guy tho, horrible teacher. exam questions are SO vague and confusing.
Worst prof ever. His slides are pretty much not even in English (they're that confusing.) run, run as fast as you can!
I liked him as a prof. VERY nice man and although his multiple choice questions are very hard the long answers are fair and everything is in the textbook readings and slides. It's just a heavy course so it's hard to do well.
Could there be a worse prof?
Main issue with him is that I don't think he speaks English. First of all, he wrote "eucaryote" on half the slides. And his questions on tests were so vague and odd. I don't even know what he wanted me to talk about for half of them. He's a lovely person but horrible if you actually want to pass the class the first time around
Never take this class. This class will make you despise bio and drop your CGPA. Switch programs if you can.
Not an overwhelmingly clear professor, does not gain your attention. Obscure questions.
Worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are boring. His notes are horribly disorganized. His questions are obscure and vague. He may be a nice guy, but he CAN'T teach.
He really is not a bad prof. I went into the class reading the reviews and thought I was doomed-the secret is to actually attend class and make notes BASED on the slides in order to succeed. You must put in a strong effort to reap the rewards. Prof Johnson is a nice man, yes its extremely difficult but if you put forth the effort you will be fine.
Dr. Johnson is legitimately the worst professor at OttawaU. I feel like the only reason he's still employed is that he's tenured. He pretty much just talks about whatever's on his mind during his lectures, so they don't make any sense. What's worse is that the random facts will show up on final exams, which are mind-numbingly difficult.
He is not that bad. He is interested in what he is talking about and you just have to spend some time learning the material like you would with any other prof. You will see nothing on the exams that is not straight from the lectures or right off the slides except for the experiment question on the final. I found the textbook was not needed at all.
He is a very nice guy. However, he is very confusing and does not conduct the material clearly. I had to do my own " extra"readings, ask friends, go online, and ask other profs to understand most of his material. On the other hand, his midterms and final exam are manageable if you thoroughly understand the concepts. My thoughts, "Just pass it".
Kinda hard to hate this guy since he's so nice! That aside, I only went to 1 of his lectures; it was all I could tolerate. Never explains anything; keeps repeating what we'll look at in the future. MARKING SCHEME WILL KILL YOU! Advice: if you want to pass, answer the question, then write down anything/everything related to that topic... then pray.
Really nice guy, but horrible at teaching. Stopped going to lectures because I was so bored and he did a lot of rambling; he was confusing. I found that I had to rely mostly on podcasts because he tended to rush through important parts of the lecture and I couldn't catch them. Midterms and final were okay
The whole time I thought Ol' Douggy was going to have a stroke, would have made the class interesting. But actually, the midterms suck, he can't explain a thing. When he talks you know its about bio, but you have no clue what it is about. The bell curve will save you (should have had 91.. got a 99).. skip his class, you won't miss anything
Lectures are very hard to follow (i.e. disorganized and hard to link concepts). Provides some idea of what to expect on Midterms - I recommend doing the sample questions provided. Overall, if a great individual effort is made, it is possible to do well in the course.
He's not the best at explaining things and he tends to talk about what we'll see later on in the course rather than what we're doing now. listening to the podcasts was the same as being in class. Just take notes and answer the questions thoroughly. Everything on the exam was from the slides or what he talked about.
This man does not speak in sentences, but rather strings random words together in hopes it will make sense. He is so difficult to understand, it's not even funny. Good luck my friends, good luck
AWFUL. Rest assured, you are not the only one in lecture who thinks he is speaking gibberish. This is like an actual quote from his class: "so lac operan and x and z and enzyme and blue and it can also not be blue if the substrate is green but it is cleaved so then the molecule."
Difficult to understand, but not a difficult course..
This professor DOESNOT reply to email; if so just says, "we've discussed it in detail in class". He is very unclear, wikipedia is even more helpful. I totally agree, Dr. Gilmour is best. Everything was crystal clear until this guy came along
Can you say "incompetent"? Dr. Johnson does not speak in full sentences, does not clarify anything, and is about as interesting as watching paint dry...realllyyy boring paint. He also has a bad habit of teaching false information, and making up words, and then insisting you buy into his delusion for the length of the course. Not impressed.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! His questions on the midterm were very confusing and u don't really understand what the question is asking of u. Multiple choice is extremely hard... AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!!
Not clear at all. Classes are really awkward specially when he makes jokes that are not funny at all! His tests are terribly confusing. Nice guy, terrible professor
DJ is not even that bad. Listening to Podcasts makes everything so much more clear. The class focuses a lot on structure and students tend to study functions more.
Horrible teacher. I managed to find a way to get through his material. Download podcasts and play them in slow motion while taking notes at the same time. That'll make it easier to decipher his lecture. This course covers a lot more material than other courses. If you study everything at the last moment you will fail. Study weekly, A- is possible.
Very sweet prof., but having him as a teacher really makes you miss the way Dr. Gilmour did her lectures. The textbook is your best friend for this course.
Unbelievably useless and incompetent. Never available to talk, avoids admitting his mistakes by diverting responsibility to the coordinator. If the university cares at all about the students they should seriously consider removing him from ever teaching again... do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. He made me hate my best subject
I tried so hard to like this class but it just couldn't happen with Johnson. He was a really bad prof and his clarity is awful. I would try to read the textbook as much as possible...but I didn't even know what the focus us. Good luck fellow students
Sometimes I found Dr Johnson''s lectures a bit confusing but he''s an excellent prof overall and has a good sense of humour. You will have to read the textbook a lot for this course and podcasts can be a hit or miss depending on your style of studying. Beware of his fill in the blank questions on the midterm.. DNA and RNA blankblankblank
Oh Johnson, he's a good person, however his lectures were all over the place. There were not many lectures I could follow what he was saying. You're probably better off getting the info from the textbook. His tests were also not the best. Especially his notorious fill in the blanks or rather sentences. Your best bet: do well on KMG's section! GL.
I took 3176 as well as 4134. Both of the classes I took were amazing. He is so clear and obviously interested in what he's doing. PlantAnimal has an essay and presentation, not a final. It was my favourite course to date. Animal Behaviour was very intuitive and enjoyable.
I'm sorry I had him as a prof. This year's genetics section will be a lot easier to comprehend now that he's gone. His tests don't make sense and his fill in the blank questions are too vague to understand what he wants. I think he should stick to research and not teach again
He is not the best lecturer; he isn't very clear and he goes into much details (more than we as students need to know) like a researcher he is. Textbook and doing the practice exams help tremendously. However, he is very likely to answer your questions ad help whether through office hours or through email especially before exams.
I don't know where to even start. Basically you will have to learn everything from the textbook and cross your fingers that the bell curve is in your favour.
Had one midterm and one large important NSERC proposal to write. He isn't the most energetic lecturer and goes off track often but he is very kind and caring and his exam questions are easy
