Explains confusing subject material well. Patient and accomodating.
lab reports suck, so does he
The labs suck, can go off subject easily, but at least I learn in his class.
labs are dumb, he wants to change the way we learn math, hard grader
Hard grader, but is willing to work with you. Labs suck!
accomodating but irrelevant- scattered notes and impossible labs
Great guy, hard to understand
tough subject but i know it inside out now, go to his office and he will help
Is a difficult teacher and will frustrate you- but is a major asset, youll see
Labs are hard, but help for understanding topics. Cute guy for his age.
Labs help your grade. Very willing to help. Nice butt.
Very helpful. Willing to discuss philosophy of mathematics.

very good proffessor, I learned a lot.
NOT HELPFUL AT ALL...BABBLES ON ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE NOT RELATED TO CLASS AND IS VERY UNCLEAR. TESTS ARE ESSAY-LIKE AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE MATH. HE IS THE WORST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN
Very nice guy and helpful. You can tell he is Christian by the way he is willing to help and attitude.
He is always willing to help. He forces you to understand and not just memorize. Didn't like it at first, but now I understand why he does it. And I agree with the other rater, he does have a cute butt.

I keep thinking is her for real? Get a grip, man!
the labs seem impossible, they are only worth 20 points but take hours and hours....he is good at teaching though, and is willing to help. if u must take this class...take it with him..but good luck. u can make it!
He is an EXCELLENT teacher. He is not easy, but I put in a decent amount of effort and got an A. He really likes what he does, and you will learn a lot. Do not listen to the bad comments, he is a wonderful teacher.
Do not take it with him... you will dread going to his class every week.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM!! He picks favorites. I really struggled with this course, but I'm retaking it with Martha Frank. She has much better ratings - check them out!!
Great guy. Always willing to help. Take this class with him, you won't be sorry.
Don't take this class with him. You have to do way too much work for little points on homework and labs. He picks favorites, and gives difficult tests. I had taken Calculus the previous year in high school, and this was way too dificult even for me.
Calculus with him was my biggest mistake. Such a ****1
Great guy. The labs make you understand the ideas. It is a lot of work, but I learned a lot.
Calculus is so much harder now than it ever was
I got an A in calculus in High school, but somehow managed to get a B- in his class. He's a ****, and his labs are unreasonable. What other calc classes have fricken labs?!?! Will never take him again!!!!!!!!!!
I just finished a tough final, but I feel I learned alot. He was tough, but if you put in the work you will come out of the class with much more understanding than the other sections do.
He is the best teacher, I learned a lot and made my carrer choice from this class. He is also my advisor, and he is very helpful. Take classes with him if you can.
Nice guy. He was always willing to help. He did expect us to do proofs. Yuck! But his tests were fair. He gave us choices for proofs on tests so if we didn't see one right away, we were not sunk. Nice tush too.
Overall not a good experience.
Yeah, you have to do a lot of work, but it is worth it in the end. Not for someone who wants an easy A...but if you really want to LEARN calc, take him for sure!!
He is the worst prof. I have ever had. He treats students unfairly. I would never take him agian. I hated him.
very nice guy. knows alot about teaching math, will give lots of helping ways to teach math with technology. not alot of grades-very little homework. fair grader.
thanks for nothing! if you are looking to write big paragraphs on your tests, this class is for you. i felt like i was in english class because he makes us write out our answers in paragraph format. terrible class!
He is too smart to be teaching! Dr. Lapp is unclear and wanders during his lectures, making it difficult to grasp his full intent. He is WAY to focused on calculators and technology instead of implimenting the basic fundamentals of Calculus. I will NEVER take him again, and i DO NOT reccomend him
The rater below must of missed the whole point of what Dr. Lapp is trying to do. I have him for Calc and the labs really help. He does expect alot and that you work to understand and not just memorize. I will take him again if possible because I want to understand the material.
I think the only reason I did well in MTH 132 was because I had already taken Calculus in high school. I sensed that others in the class were struggling with some of the concepts that Dr. Lapp taught. Also, his focus on technology may hurt in Calc 3 if that professor does not use the calculator.
Dr. Lapp is a great teacher! Definitely not an easy A! Labs are done to better understand concepts, but sometimes he relies too much on technology. If you want a challenge, take this class!
Dr. Lapp doesnt know how to teach an undergrad class. He expected you to buy the $190 calulator and relied on that the entire semester. His homework assignments take you anywhere between 3-8 hours and the tests are insane. Homework quizzes for uncollected hw too. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Very helpful. He gives review sessions and does everhting he can to help you out. Labs helped me understand the ideas.
Dr. Lapp spends alot of time helping you if you want it. He lets students actually do something during class instead of just listening to someone else talk. The labs really helped me understand things. Take him if you can. Hey girls, he has a cute booty too.
He's a great teacher in the sense that he wants you to understand the concepts, not just go about things robotically. However, his grading is ridiculous. His midterm was ridiculous--everyone failed it. And you stress out SO much about the final. But in the end, it was one of the best learning classes I've ever had. Hardest earned B+ ever.
Dr. Lapp is such a nice guy. He really cares that we know the math so we can teach kids. This class had a lot of very rude students in it. Dr. Lapp had trouble at times keeping them from talking and distracting those of us who actually wanted to learn. I hope those students never get into Teacher Ed because they have no business teaching kids.
Dr. Lapp is a great professor. He cares so much about good math education and is always researching more about how to improve it. You learn a lot of subject matter as well as how to teach it (though you may not think so at the time). Plus, you get to use sweet calculators that are indeed helpful in the classroom. Learn as much as you can from him!
The course requires a lot of work outside of class. It is a math class, but there are group labs outside of class. These get easier as the semester goes on. He cares a lot about his students, but I was in a small class and we all had trouble understanding parts of the material. It was the hardest class I have taken so far, but he's a nice guy.
This guy really knows his Math, but he's TOO SMART for this class. He expects you to understand the concepts after 50 min of class, and you need the $190 TI-NSPIRE calculator because he bases the class purely around that. He goes through things way too fast, but if you need help, just ask him. However, I do not recommend taking him for CALC I
Dr. Lapp is a really awesome guy, really helpful during office hours and really knows his stuff. HOWEVER the class is ridiculously hard! The tests consists of like 8 questions, each worth 10 points. Know the story problems and know how to use your calcularot. If you don't, your screwed. Come to class because the quizzes he gives can save your grade
Pickiest grader ever. Through four semesters at CMU this is the only class I have not earned an A in. Expects way too much for a three credit class. I spent more time on this class than all my others combined. Take it with somebody else if at all possible.
Dr Lapp is an amazing professor, he certainly knows his math, HOWEVER, he is wayyyy too serious with a Calc 1 class. The most ridiculous part was basing the entire class around the $200 TI NSPIRE calculator, if you don't have it, you're bound to fail. Take someone else for Calc 1 and save yourself from a nightmare.
Prof. Lapp is a very helpful and caring man, but does not know how to convey information to a Calc 1 class. Class is based around TI-89 or TI-NSPIRE, so if you don't know how to work the calculator or don't already have it, prepare to learn. I did not do well but felt that my grade was based more on my calculator skill and not math knowledge.
Dr. Lapp is extremely helpful. I know some student complain about the cost of the calculator, but it really helped me understand things. He gives review sessions before tests and goes out of his way to help you. Like he says, "if you understand it, there's less for you to memorize".
FINAL SUCKS, go to review sessions for tests and study that stuff! Do well on test 1 and 2 because the final is impossible, I studied 2 hours everyday for a week with people from class and I still failed. He tells you why proofs are right but not with lots of examples. Great guy, Okay class.
I passed. Don't know how, don't know what I learned, don't know how it's supposed to apply to the real world of teaching. Still don't know what he wanted on the final project. Brilliant, enthusiastic and likable guy, but disappointing class.
Lapp wants you to pass his class. He is SUPER accessible and there are many places where you get help. No required hw, if you know the stuff you can do the hw quizes on the spot. Borrow an inspire if you can.Its calc so your gonna have to work your but off.he does so much for you,its your fault if you fail the class.I didnt do hw and got a b+
Excellent teacher. Pay attention and you will be rewarded.
He is very nice and wants you to succeed, but it was a difficult class. His tests are IMPOSSIBLE! He moves pretty quickly and offers reviews. He gives pop quizzes about every other week.
Dr. Lapp has to be one of the best professors I've had so far! He does an excellent job going over each section and takes plenty of time to explain harder concepts. His exams are EXTREMELY difficult, but are do-able. As well as you do decent on those and get most points on his HW quizzes and labs, you should do just fine in his class.
Great professor and knows what he is talking about. He tends to keep talking and explaining. He is very helpful in his office hours, but he will work on one problem with you for about 30 minutes. He is all about the CAS calculator which is difficult if you do not know the algebra behind calculus. But overall a good class, be prepared to work hard.
He is very reliant on the calculator, which is not how it will be for the rest of your math classes. He does know what he's talking about and is smart in the subject, but he does not know how to explain the subject.
Fantastic professor! Dr. Lapp is big into teaching you the ideas behind math, not "symbol pushing" (as he'd call it), and so you're going to work. But as a result, you leave class with a solid understanding of the material. Great guy on top of it.
Dr. Lapp focuses on teaching the principals behind what you are learning, and often does "math labs" so that you can make the discoveries about things for yourself. Go to class, do the homework, and he is readily available for any help you may need, take advantage of his office hours!!!!
Really not a bad professor, but here's the bottom line. Do you genuinely like math? Go ahead and take the honors version. Are you actually going to do the homework? If not, don't take this class. A big part of your grade is homework quizzes and if you don't do them, it's not good. Don't just take this for the competency.
Taking calc one in the virtual classroom in Dow is the most god awful thing ever. The layout of course material is awful. Have to complete labs about stuff we haven't learned, never know when you will be quizzed. There is no way to keep up with him because he goes way to fast. He is a very nice guy, but that won't help you pass his class.
I took Calc 1 in the active learning classroom, and I learn better in his interactive style rather than a lecture. Pay attention to the facebook group because he'll put up solutions that end up on homework quizzes (you don't turn homework in). Labs are a pain but they aren't impossible. Tests are hard but he adjusts the grades afterwords.
Overall very nice guy, unfortunately that doesn't help you in the class. He explains more of why calc works, not how to actually do it. Have to think very hard on exams, making them hard to do good. He does curve exams though, and excludes lowest HW quiz and lab. MUST GO TO CLASS 100%! I feel he goes above and beyond what is required for Calc I.
Lapp is a great professor to have and he will be there for you when you need help. Most students in his class do not take advantage of his office hours so therefore they are left confused. If you pay close attention to lapp's lectures you will understand the material.
Dr. Lapp is a really nice guy and wants you to do well if you try, but to get a good grade you have to work your butt off to get it, by doing all the homework and going to his office hours. You MUST buy the TI Nspire CX CAS which is $140 on Amazon. This Class has a lot of physics concepts built in, as well. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, IT'LL SAVE YOU!
Dr. Lapp is knowledgeable, no question. The issue is that teaching a Calc 1 class mostly off proofs (as opposed to how to do the work) caused many to struggle. He likes to over-explain the reason things work, skimping on how to really use the ideas for a test. His reviews are not closely modeled off the tests, and tests often push the time limit.
Dr. Lapp is incredibly knowledgeable about math and science. His passion for the subject really comes through in lectures. He does not use a traditional lecture format, he enjoys group discussion and group work. Overall, I have a better understanding of math because of his teaching and persistence for group work. Highly recommend.
Dr. Lapp's calc 2 class is great, IF YOU'VE ALREADY TAKEN CALC 2 and have learned the basics. During class he spends a lot of time on real world applications, and how to use your calculator in solving integrals, etc. However he does not spend enough time developing your written skills, so go to the math center everyday bcuz ur expected to know how.
Dr Lapp did not do thorough examples and taught by having the students rely on the calculator (TI Nspire that is $130 you HAVE to have for the class!). Stay away from him if you do not want to pay $130 for a calculator you will not use again. He often did not explain himself and it was blatantly obvious that he preferred specific students.
Nice dude but his class is literally impossible unless youve taken and passed calculus before. Doesn't teach anything in class. Youll be confused the entire semester. Exams are impossible. Homework is impossible. He requires you to buy a $160 calculator that is impossibly difficult to use and the whole class is dependent on you being able to use it
The homework makes it impossible to do your best in the class. I understand the subject matter very well but the homework is so different from anything learned in class or on the exam. And if you don't understand a problem on the hw, well you're completely screwed for the homework quiz! Wish he would've gone over problems in class before the quiz.
Math is normally my best subject but he made this class awful. He expects you to know most of the subject material before you even come into the class, and the book for the homework doesn't even sound like English so its hard to understand. He also has you buy an expensive complicated calculator. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH HIM!!
Hard class. Took AP Calculus in high school, passed with an A, my grade in this class isn't even close to that. Lapp is definitely a smart man with a good heart, but the way he teaches the class is very difficult to grasp.
He cares so much and is very accessible for help, but that being said the class is incredibly difficult (more then it should be). I am an honors student and I really struggled. Doug doesn't lecture or really provide examples of problems you would see on the test and the study guide is useless. His class consists of going in depth of like 3 problems
Dr. Lapp has a good heart and is very willing to help. But he uses a complex calc. that few have experience with. The calc. is used for EVERYTHING, which makes it hard to visualize the problems. Coming from someone who tends to get A's in math, this class was frustrating. I was in and out of his office every other week which is how I managed a B+.
I highly recommend taking this class over the summer semester! He recognizes that people in this class probably aren't too fond of math and tries to make it fun (ie, we played softball and graphed the parabola of the ball). He took time out of his lectures to explain concepts if people were confused, but he does assign a lot of homework.
He's an amazing professor who does lots of examples, he also does this thing called office hours live where he has his office hours, but does them on facebook live so people can asks questions from the homework and watch it again later to study.
Hes a very nice and caring professor, I liked him as a person. His teaching method isnt very clear. He doesnt lecture he only does in class group work but provides no examples or explanation on what to do. The test are very difficult and youll have to know how to use the very expensive calculator ($180) I wouldnt take him unless u already know calc
Dr. Lapp is a very kind and caring person. I actually really like him as a person and he will help you a lot if you ask. He's a talker though for sure and goes off on tangents. His teaching though isn't very great. He is a brilliant man, very very smart, you can just tell, BUT he doesn't teach clearly and assumes we know more than we do.
Hardest math class I have ever had! Dr. Lapp cares about his students and will help if you ask. He knows a lot about math, but he doesn't explain it very well to us through notes or examples. Homework assignments get overwhelming and when you complete one, two more assignments take its place. Went to MAC every week (multiple times) to get help.
Calculus 2 is definitely the hardest math class I've ever taken, but Dr. Lapp has a unique approach to it that helped a lot. He uses group projects, labs, interaction, and special technological resources to help. He is a very respected teacher for a reason. I recommend him if you struggle with typical math lectures.
Don't take MATH132 with him. For starters, he can't read. He also tries to make his students laugh but almost always fails miserably. I took calc in high school and you'd think a college professor would be better than your high school calc teacher. He isn't. I'd rather have my high school calc teacher than Dr. Lapp, and that's saying something.
Professor Lapp is very friendly but is, unfortunately, a bad teacher. During class, he fails to provide proper examples or explanations for the subject. He often has groups work together to learn things that he hasn't taught. Despite that, he is very willing to help. Also, he requires an expensive CAS calculator.
He is a secondary mathematics education professor. He has unique and new ways of teaching that help many students. He also talks a lot and goes on rants. Very kind and approachable.
He's a really smart guy, but class is very fast paced and he crammed at the end of the semester. 1 on 1 help always clarified topics & he did his best to be avaliable, but near the end it's just hard. Wednesday before our final exam on monday, he taught two units very quickly and assigned several problem sets and is testing us on it in our final.
Nice guy who cares but doesn't teach much of the material. Shows you a few example problems but mainly relies on you to figure it out with your group. Lots of group work. Says he doesn't assign much for homework, but each problem has multiple parts. Homework was difficult but exams were easy compared to homework and he goes over reviews
