Great Course, But the exams are way to hard.

AMAZING, charismatic, intelligent, makes it fun and interesting!

During lecture he made the worst jokes...
Great lecturer - and very candid! Speaks a little fast...hand cramp!!!
I actually stayed awake the whole three hours.
killer exams
Made the work interesting and fun. Great lectures.

3 hrs went by in a flash.funny & intresting.exam... like all psych exams :(
funny, interesting, approachable, great prof
very interesting and funny guy. adds humour to the class to keep us awake for those long 3 hour lectures. he was fair in his exams and made everything clear and easily understandable

Dr. McCann is a VERY good lecturer, he is also very helpful and takes time out to assist anyone with questions. Above all, he is inspiring!
I got an A in intro. psyc. thought he was easy, got a C+ in social psyc. next year...(and I worked just as hard) He's just harder in upper level courses
Doug McCann was awesome!!!! His lectures were so organized and clear and understandable. He is also humerous and applies the course material very well. Great pROF. Everyone loved his class.
FUNNY,ORGANIZED,WELL EDUCATED.MADE LECTURES GO BY IN A FLASH(3 HRS!)ALWAYS KEPT THE CLASS AWAKE,ENTERTAINED,&INTRIGUED.ALMOST MADE LEARNING F U N . EXAMS WERE FAIR, CLEAR AND KILLERS (C'MON ITS PSYCH!!)
Don't take social psyc with him!!!! He 8is so strict and confusing, his lectures make no sense. And his exams are hard!!!
Funniest man alive.. You should take this intro with him if you want to actually learn something and be facinated not only by the course material but by his comedy. I would definelty take another course with him again!
His lecturing style is confusing, dense, and way too fast paced. His explanations are superficial and haphazard. A chore to sit through.
overall a good prof. exams not that easy.
great lecturer, makes the course material very interesting.
Great professor! Interesting, fair, and extremely helpful. One of the best profs i have come across! I highly recommend taking his course.
Great professor! Fair, helpful, and very interesting! I highly recommend taking his course!
Prof McCann is a dedicated teacher who helps students become independent, life-long learners. Those who manage to be his class are lucky.
Excellent Prof, clear, helpful lectures, fair but kinda hard tests.
very good prof, too bad i only had him for half the year
A very good prof. Perfect for you frosh people.
Yes, yes, we ALL know about Harrison.
I thought he could have explained a lot of the topics more clearly, he was difficult to understand. I found his lectures too dense and quite boring. Also he's unapproachable type of person, for questions...I didn't like him at all!
Very funny and entertaining lecturer. He knows how to involve the class effectively, really strengthening the understanding of the concepts. Unfortunately, I only had him for half the year. Tests were a bit hard, but I didnt read the textbook.
great course & great prof
he was so good in my 1010 class that i registered for his 2nd yr course. a fantastic prof!
Professor McCann teaches differently in intro and social. He's terrific in intro, but extremely difficult and incomprehensible in social - and his social exams are quite unfair - 80 mc and three essay questions, all in two hours! Awful.
Great Prof! My favourite yet, I changed my entire timetable to take his class. Highy recommended, two thumbs up!
This professor is FUNNY and EASY GOING, Great leactures and Exams are very fair. Pleasure to si through his lectures. Recommended for all.
Cool prof. Lectures are interesting, gives a lot of in-class questionnaires for his social research - you get to see the results later. Very easy tests.
Amazing prof. One of the very few classes that werent torture to sit through for 3 hours. Easy going, funny keeps the class interested in the lecture.
Interesting prof. knows how to keep a class on there feet
He manages to be clear, humourous, witty and knowledgeable. Conveys things simply and accurately, makes you think. Exactly what I was hoping for when I imagined a university prof.
I heard so many good things about Mccann that I just had to take 1 of his courses...so I did. He is very clear, knowledgeable, and somewhat funny and Canadian all at once. His tests are kinda hard because he tricks you on the M.C. with "all of the above, none of the above" etc. overall 7/10
i would highly recommend to change your schedule if needed to have him as your prof.McCann is one of the best profs psychology department has to offer.
Excellent prof. Very clear, provides interesting examples and relates material to every day life. makes the class very interesting, humourous and straight forward
excellent prof! everyone should take his class its so much fun and he keeps you from falling asleep...he can probably make anyone laugh
One of the best profs! Highly recomended!!
best prof in my 4 years at york, totally amazing, take any class you can with him!
He's down to earth, and makes fun of U of T alot. His powerpoint presentations are clear and understandable. Structured the course well, and i am going to try and get him as a teacher next year
excellent prof! the only class i haven't fell asleep in! all his notes are posted online... all u do is fill in the blanks during the lecture. exams weren't too bad. highly recommend him!
Overall, he was a great prof.
Nice prof, but have the worst TAs. He makes class interesting.
i love this course!!!! it was the best. the prof is amazing. trust me i encourage everyone to take this course.
Doug is great!! Very interesting lectures, clear and concise. My only beef is his reluctance to discourage talking durring lectures. I don't think there is anything more detractive from a learning experience. Great text with a fabulous interactive CD. I reccomend this course to anyone!
he is hot
the prof knows his material and knows how to teach it..very interesting lectures with lots of personal and funny examples, easy to approach and very very helpful and understanding..tests are kind of hard but u must attend his lectures to do the essay questions..tests are fair..his class is worth your time..
The best teacher in Psyc department but he didn't give me .8 percent to get an A
Great Prof! Really knows his stuff and really likes teaching it.
He's so helpful in clarifying information and he makes intro. to psych. extremely interesting. Great Class.
Such a nice man. Such a goo prof. Wish he taught more classes!
What an amazing professor!!! He was extremely helpful and such a nice person to talk to!! I loved it when he got the class to sing "row row row your boat"!! lol
his class is so much fun!
his tests are really hard, but he bell curves so that the marks are higher :) also, he makes the material really interesting, he also makes the class fun to go to, its the only one i look forward to!!
Lectures are interesting though the tests are really hard!!! He's a good prof and makes the lectures interesting.
He's the best professor i've ever had in all my years at york. He's lectures are awsome, he really gets you involved in the whole process.Out of all the first year teachers he does make more challenging test, but thats all they are challenging. If you read the text book you'll get an easy A.Plus, he bell-curves all his tests.
He is absolutely the best prof at York! His classes are actually fun to attend and he's very helpful and clear. Highly recommended!
Hes an amazing prof who knows how to get you interested with the material. His lectures are on the exams so if u want to do well I suggest taking good notes. His tests are challenging but he bell curves them anyway by like 10% or more at times =D
He's am amazing prof! I love attending his lectures. I've never missed any of his lectures. He made this course extremely interesting.
best prof i have had so far! make sure u do not miss any of his lectures (essay questions are always based on lectures). tests are a little hard, but dont worry much, the belling will take care of that:D. AMAZING PROFESSOR. "gooood afternoon", "welcome back". always says that!
goooooooooood afternoon, gooooood afternoon, welcome back, welcome back, lol amazing prof tests are hard (but he wil add at least 10% BONUS TO EVERYONES MARK) recomended.
Awesome prof. He incorperated videos and pictures from the news into alot of his lectures. Always compared things to everyday life, and personal experiences. A class that I skipped as seldom as possible, was definetely worth the walk across campus (from rez). Question though? Does he own more than 1 outfit? :)
Awesome class for a 3 hour lecture. Professor was always interesting and helpful for answering questions after class. pleasure to be in his class!
Awesome! Im not a psych major but I got an A+. he is very clear, organized and concise. Very good at answering questions and all lecture material is relevant. Tests are long but if you dont skip lecture and read the material they make perfect sense. He rules!
First of all, no university course is easy - But what is great about McCann is his vive for teaching and his enthusiasm, plus his sense of humour. Go to every lecture and read the text inside and out and you will no doubt succeed! It's to bad this prof does not teach more courses because he would make for great listening. Study hard!
mccann is such a great prof.... i want to take more of his classes!!!
Interesting lecturer but tests were extremely difficult and some test questions were irrelevant. Class average was around 60%. Make sure you memorise every single detail in the textbook.
He is an excellent professor. I wish he would teach more coursesin the evening 4 to 7. He is very organized and he has his own website, where he post grades and his lectures. I found his exams are hard but if you study and attend all his lectures you'll do fine. I would take his courses again. I highly recommend to take his courses.
Really good prof, he's funny and knowledgeable, his tests are hard and tricky, but I managed to be get a B.He doesnt cover alot in his lectures,so you need to read the book, but he uses videos n games n examples to prove his point. His notes are kind of incomplete, but you need to come to all his lectures. He also puts his notes n marks on this site.
great professor! he even wrote a text book! hes funny and interesting to listen to.
Great professor, took him for Intro to Psyc and I actually went to all of my lectures! He keep's things interesting and clear. He likes to talk about his son a lot which isn't bad because it makes him easily approachable because you feel like you know him. Not bad marker, he gives you what you deserve!
realy good professor. he has a nice website where he posts marks and notes but they arent complete so you need to attend lectures. like someone else said his notes arent very detailed but usually the studies he mentions in lecture are often the SA questions
very knowledgeable and helpful. He is friendly and approachable and will help students who need it. His tests are ok (just make sure to do your readings). He makes lectures interesting and keeps students interested. Just make sure to pay attention during class.
One of the best prof's I've ever had, and I'm almost done school. His classes are engaging and interesting. He's a nice guy, as well. If you can, definitely take his class!
Dr McCann knows his stuff alright as he wrote the textbook for this course. Makes learning fun, i remember when he made us sing haha. Tests were based on his lecture material and textbook material. Essay question, not really an essay was based on his class notes and for the most part were pretty straight forward. The hardest essay was on the exam.
Doug Mccann was a wonderful professor. No one was like him. His lectures were so interesting that he made me attend every class. Believe it or not this is the only 3 hour class that I have ever been in that didnt make me sleep. If you study you will get an A. Just listen, take notes and go home and read the text.
hes honestly an amazing prof HES TOUGH but if u listen to him you will learn! amazing!
I love this man! He is not only interesting, his tests are SO easy. All you have to do is review the lecture notes, listen in class, and take notes on the textbook. If you break up the reading and take good notes, before each exam you only need a few hours of study to guarantee you a good grade. He makes jokes on the exams, couldn't stop laughing
This is by far the best prof I've ever had, he makes you want to learn more and is very empowering. No one better!!!
Absolutely wonderful professor. He made me enjoy every class I took with him and I still continue to learn outside of class thanks to him.
He is a horrible professor, he can put an insomniac to sleep. He is not funny or interesting at all. Compared to other professors, he is crap. For tests you need to memorize his notes and the textbook, and he asks such specific questions. Do not enrol in his class, you are better off with Dr. Jubis
This is by far the BEST prof at York and as for the 2 ignorant and useless negative comments before mine, anyone that isn't brain damaged would be advised to ignore those comments, trust me! The only thing horrible is to get inaccurate info from losers that probably think literacy is an option for university lol, this prof is fair and inspires you t
Great Prof! I agree with the last comment, that student must be on crack! LOL!!! This prof is funny and witty and very encouraging! Definately stands above the rest.
i feel that his lectures r confusing..something so simple that anyone will know....he will make it sound really hard...and his jks r kool but drag on..and make u really bored...if u just read the text book and read his notes..you will do fine..3hrs r too long!
His lectures are actually very interesting, the best 3 hour lectures at York, and he really motivates you to engage in the material. Re: the last comment; he does NOT drag on and he is witty and knows his stuff- maybe psych just isn't for you
This guy is amazing! By far one of the greatest professors ever! He makes Psychology a fun class to go to while learning at the same time. His tests are a mixture of jokes and essential knowledge. Made going to his class easy!
ABsolutely Amazing! His class is the only class I never skipped so far. I look forward to the lectures as they're never boring. The test was pretty straight-forward and easy IF you take your time to study for it. I recommend him for everyone who wants to take Psyc 1010
i love this prof!! his lectures are very interesting not boring at all, he tells the funniest stories make sure you go to his lectures because they will be on the exam.
Some of the lectures are really fun. His test are multiple choice with one essay question which can be in point form.
Weird Test Questions
Tests are very hard, he is not very good at explaining things, I find my class notes very disorganized and random. Know EVERY little detail, he asks the most RANDOM questions on tests. Would not recommend him for first year psych.
He's an awesome prof! He actually makes me want to come to lecture.
Very hard tests you have to memorize his textbook..class is pointless ..overall not a good prof. There is way better at York! Good luck!
outstanding teacher. it is easy to do well in his class. he makes everything more simple and does not try to sound smart like most professors do even though he knows more than any other prof. really great, nice, man. enjoyable, interesting and simple class
very good proff, clear, interesting, and funny. ATTEND ALL LECTURES! he asks questions about that stuff on the tests. also READ every chapter, and every word, test are not HARD but full of detail
intelligent prof. if you read the textbook you will do well. his lectures are quite boring BUT his tests are very fair.
Professor McCann is amazing teacher! Be very attentive on his lectures and while reading the textbook and you will do fine! I recommend his classes for everyone! Enjoy and study hard!!!
The Multiple Choice tests are extremely arduous. I would not select this professor if you are attempting to obtain an A or A+.
Awesome professor! Extremely interesting lectures and his textbook is now my table book! Take time study for the tests and read textbook before the lecture and you will do perfect! Extremely helpful! I strongly recommend him for everyone!
He's a really good professor funny, approachable and helps you understand. however, the tests are sometimes based on really obscure questions such as why he left early or his favorite colour. overall, if you put in the effort you should do fine. but you need to go to lecture to get a B or better.
This teacher is quite difficult. Many people i know dropped his class due to his tests. He has no assignemtns and his questions are impossible. i.e why was i absent 5 weeks ago. YOu have to work really hard to even get a C
By a mile the BEST prof I've ever had! He makes Psych so much fun, and his jokes are hilarious! Make sure you read the book and go to every class though, because it's ALL on the test. Lots of questions on small details in the book to see if you actually read it, but this class was an easy A for me. Just put in the work and you'll do well.
Humourous.
Absolutely hilarious. You need to pay attention in lectures and read the textbook to do well, but he made the class fun.
Worst prof I have ever had, his 3 hour lectures are useless. I could have just stayed home, read the textbook and maybe have passed. Tests are impossible, makes you come to class to fill in study notes and none of the info from the study notes was on the exam it was purely from the textbook so u basically need to memorize the text to pass.
The exams he uses are more punishing than any method utilized by the Canadian Justice system.
He's a great lecturer who knows his stuff, but his exams can be quite difficult. You should attend lectures, take thorough notes, and do your readings. He's also a very funny man who doesn't talk down to his students. I had him for PSYC 1010 and I took him again this year because even though I didn't do well in 1010, I still enjoy him as a prof.
His exams are impossible. He throws in personal anecdotes. I just had a question on his exam "which movie did I see with my son last week?"
Best Prof. I've had at York. I had him for intro psych last year and social psych this year. I intend to find out if he teaches a third year course and will definitely take it. He's funny and does use personal questions on his exams (ex. what is my son's name?) But their always at least somewhat related to the subject matter!
GREAT Prof. He is really clear and if you attend the lectures the little personal anecdote questions aren't hard at all - they are basically bonus points for people that made an effort to show up to his lectures. Funny, and the lectures go by quickly. Will be taking his Social Psych class next year and am really looking forward to it.
He's cool
Really nice prof. and interesting lectures but you must memorize the entire text book for his tests. Even the small print you think is not important. Do not take psyc 1010 with this prof! I heard Jubis is an easy prof. probably way better than McCann.
Great professor! Great class, textbook is good. Was able to get an A without attending all the lectures, a lot of the exam questions are from the textbook although he likes to include a couple on each that you would only know from being in the lecture. Best class and prof at York for me so far.
You dont have to go for the lectures but its very helpful to. I didnt study the text book (although its mandatory) and I did well(i went to every class). You can not go to class and study the whole text and expect to get a C...So come to class and its an easy breeze. Tests are not so easy but fair based on material covered. Overall, Awesome prof!
His everything you would expect of university proffessor he knows all the ins and out and his more then happy to help you if you ask question, however, going to classes is a must since he posts fill-in notes, and you must study both the text and lecture notes and pay attention to little things he talks about ex. his son it could be a bonus on exam!
McCann makes the lectures very interesting, plus he's really funny. I've never had to ask for help but my friends who have said he was very patient and thorough with them. His tests are fair meaning if you study hard and attend class, you do well.
Spend a lot of time studying the text book from front to back, as well as you must attend ALL lectures as he will not record anything> this is extremely unfair. Exams are difficult even if you do study quite a bit. There are also some ridiculous irrelevant questions. He knows what hes talking about, but focuses too much during lecture on experiments
McCann is a good teacher. His lectures & video selections complement the textbook readings, and he's got a good sense of humor. He also has a knack for bringing the concepts "to life." You will learn a lot about the human mind, but your own as well. Exam questions are fair and relevant, and handouts are provided for every lecture. He's a good prof.
This professor is really good. He makes psychology fun. I love his lectures and went to every single on of them. On his exams, he has a lot of material from lectures, so it is important to attend them.
This prof is absolutely the best there is! He has to be the most intelligent in both academics and life experience, and at the same time so modest. You are lucky if you get into his course, I highly recommend it, it made a huge difference for me :)
Amazing prof! very understanding and tests are reasonable. make sure to attend lectures because tests contain of questions from videos watched in class and print out the slides prior to class becaue they are incomplete.
Amazing prof!! truly intellgient. u must go 2 EVERY class & print out slides prior 2 class as they're skeleton notes. must read every single pg entirely & small sections that may seem unimportant. tests r not hard if u read & understand everything from the book, class notes & video notes. if u dont read it then dont expect 2 get a good grade.
He is an amazing professor who makes sure that each class is as interesting as possible, which he keeps light with humour. He's clear and concise, however questions on his test are sometimes irrelevant (just to make sure you were in class). Coming to class is mandatory, and as long as you read the textbook you'll do fine!
5 test each worth 19%. 75 multiple test questions 1 easy question.
He is a good prof, but his tests are ridiculous. He wrote the textbook, therefore you must know every sentence. And you must attend every lecture as he has a lot of questions on the tests from lecture. Some of his questions are irrelevant to the course and should not be tested.
Great Professor, but the reading load is heavy. Since he wrote the text book, you must read EVERYTHING in order to do well on the tests and you must attend lecture and fill out his power point. Some of the questions on his tests are irrelevant, but it is a VERY interesting course. If you are looking for an easy course this is definitely not one.
do not recommend, too difficult with this prof
good prof
Overall he is an amazing prof and his lectures are all clear and interesting. However you are going to have to attend his classes since around 20% of his test questions come from his lectures. However as for the book, study every little bit of it. Do your readings, attend classes, study the book and you will get an A. There is no other way out..
Great prof! He keeps lectures interesting with lots of jokes and funny pictures. You must attend every class cuz the slides on Moodle have blanks which u must fill in during lecture. I like that he forces everyone to come to class because you learn better that way. His tests are fair but this is not an easy class - you must dedicate yourself.
Don't let the fact that he wrote the textbook trick you, lectures are mandatory! There are 5 in class tests, no final exams. Tests are atleast 50/50 textbook and slides. If he spends more than a minute on something (e.x memorizing pie, talking about his son) expect it to show up on the test! From the book, know all the blue terms.
Favorite professor at York. Interesting lectures. Fair exams. Very understanding and approachable.
Really got me excited about the psychology program at York, co-author to the text we used. You can tell he knows his stuff! His lectures are interesting, he throws in jokes here and there and provides relevant real life examples and videos. I would highly recommend any first year psych students to try and switch in to his class :)
Such a cool prof, funny, engaging and passionate about psych. I always looked forward to his class. He cares about his students & tries to make sure he's clear. He does in class demos, shows videos & he's not monotone, so that really helps! His tests aren't the easiest (all MC) so your readings, pay attention, attend all lectures and you'll do fine.
Worst prof i have ever had. -You need to come to every lecture because his slides are fill in the blanks, YOU WILL NOT KNOW WHATS HAPPENING ON THE POWERPOINT IF YOU DONT ATTEND -He says something for 2 minutes in class, and theres 10+ question on the tests ( not in textbook) -His tests are very hard and specific -Super boring -Switch profs!
its too difficult and he doesn't help me anything
Dr. McCann is a terrific professor, the best I have had. I switched my major because of his class. He is not easy, but he is there for his students. If you have a problem, go see him. It's a must course. Take this course. He wrote the textbook.
I did very well in this class, but I honestly thought it was WAY too much work for a first-year class. The readings were intense and dense for a first year course. This course can really dampen your spare time and drag you down in other courses if you do not have your schedule planned out well. Prepare to read a lot. Grading is toughfor SA ques.
A good professor. His lectures are interesting. He wrote the textbook, so expect to read about 100 pages per lecture. The readings were too heavy for a first year course. He posts skeleton slides, so you have to attend lecture in order to fill in the blanks.
Oof, tons of questions from both lecture and textbook verbatim. But what a great guy, lovely character and makes class fun! Made me love my major :)
he has a great personality and gives off a good vibe but his lectures and powerpoints are the most useless things ever it is crucial to go home and read your entire textbook for the class, because you will learn NOTHING from his lecture complete waste of time to go to his class you would benefit much more from reading the text book alone
Great prof! By far my favourite lecturer at York University. He makes his students want to attend lecture and keeps them engaged throughout. For a psych course that is very heavy with reading, he does a good job of pulling out the important points in lecture and displaying them in a fun and memorable way. Would recommend!
Professor McCann is a ok professor but I find psych 1010 to have way too much reading for a 1st year course and his evaluations are difficult as he bases most of the questions from the readings and less on the lecture material.
great guy
He's a super great guy... BUT His power points are choppy and make no sense (even after filling in the blanks). Mark is based off 5 multiple choice tests. No room to level out through application of an assignment, so if you don't do well on multiple choice drop the course. I unfortunately wish I had chosen a diff. prof despite his good personalty.
very interesting lectures :)
Professor Mccann's really lecture heavy. He puts specific things from class on tests, so if you don't go you definitely won't get too high a mark. He's really cool and tries to make the class interesting. Really great class.
You can tell he is really passionate about what he teaches and knows how to teach it well. Always clear and uses examples that you'll remember for the exam.
Super nice, always answers questions in class. Tests are all MC, very simple, gives hints about what may be on them, 80% textbook 20% lectures. HAVE to read textbook in order to pass this course, readings are heavy but an easy pass if you do read, generally gives out pages not to read, what to focus on. Got an A, highly recommend!
Great Prof! Lectures are very interesting and he always jokes around. The tests are all multiple choice but you have to read all the chapters and attend all classes, because he shows videos in class and some questions on the test are based of this. Very easy to do well if you just come and sit in class and read ALL the pages, even the case studies!
This is a class that I looked forward to each week because of how interesting the lectures were. I learned about so many useful topics. If you pay attention during lectures, study the textbook and powerpoints in detail (a lot of reading), you should do really well in his class. Tests are all multiple choice with little to no tricky questions.
He does skeleton slides, gives you fill in the blank slides and gives answers during class. MUST ATTEND CLASS if you want A. MUST HAVE TEXTBOOK, 90% of info is from book. 5 tests, 3 chapters per test, 50 pages per chapter. Do not leave last minute. Attend class, read book, make notes, read notes, do bonus marks. Easy A but you have to work for it
Could turn anyone into a psychology major!
Doug is an amazing prof. His tests are all multiple choice, super easy, and there was no final exam. He does skeleton slides so you have to attend class in order to get correct notes. There is a lot of reading but if you used the textbook, concept charts and his notes you will get an easy A.
Lectures are very interesting, however it makes up a small portion of the test so you can get away with skipping a few classes. I got an A after making notes based off the textbook and studying at least one week before. Hardly used the concept charts but Mindtap is great when you don't want to lug a heavy textbook around campus.
Great prof! Good start to first year student who take his class. His lectures are interesting and fun. No exams, only 5 tests throughout the year; all multiple choice questions. He gives easy/silly bonus questions in his tests: ex. what is his son's name? I would highly suggest to take this intro to psyc class with him.
I took professor McCann's class 2 years ago and I miss that class so much! I have never attended a more fun, interesting, informative class. The material covered has real life applications, there is a lot of reading but it's all interesting and the tests are reflective of the in-class and text materials. I highly recommend this prof he's amazing!
After 2 years. I miss his lectures. I cannot wait to take his classes again! I was in his class in intro to psychology. He's funny - jokes around. His lectures were not boring. There are times where he talks about his family but it's usually lecture related. He's amazing! I enjoyed all of his lectures, I never missed one because he is amazing.
Doug is an amazing prof very friendly, accommodating, lectures are entertaining. There are 5 multiple choice tests worth 20% each, not easy if you do not study. He does skeleton slides so you have to attend class in order to get correct notes. There is a lot of long readings but if you used the textbook and his notes you will be fine.
He's a great professor and his lectures are all worth going to. Funny lectures. Not a bird course, there is a LOT of reading and tests are mostly off the textbook. His tests can be very stupid. He'll throw in stupid question about a comment he made in passing once and had a ridiculous question about Pi to the 20th decimal point I'll never forget.
He is an amazing prof, even though his class is almost 3 hours long, he keeps them interesting. He is also very funny. It's not an easy class tho, there's a lot of reading for the exams, definitely not stuff that you can study the night before.
All of his lectures were really enlightening. He made 3 hour lectures really entertaining. A lot of textbook reading to do, but if you stay on top of it, it's a great course to take. Tests are fair and pretty easy
He is a nice professor.
He is very tough on his tests. Mostly difficult questions! Also ridiculous questions from his lectures
I think he's a really nice, funny prof. His lectures are usually vague, and his tests are based on some lecture components as well as many questions from the textbook. However he does ask a lot of random specific questions you would think are irrelevant. Overall the tests were pretty easy if you have a good memory
Prof mccan is an actual gem!
Professor McCann is one of the best teachers you'll encounter in your life. What you need to do is to attend all the lectures, exam questions come mostly from the lectures. It is important that you know his personal examples and most importantly the name (JACKIE CHAN).
Other reviews claim that his tests are IMPOSSIBLE (super irrelevant details from lecture/textbook); this is not true! For an A: TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. This is not a bird course, and you will need to attend class (for examples, which will be on tests), make notes on the assigned chapters, start studying at least 5 days before the test, and put in effort
His lectures are odd. He posts basically empty slides and you need to attend lectures and fill these slides. For what I found there is 70-80% of exam question are from textbook so you really need to understand the material to get a decend grade. And his tests are based on the analysis so there is no much direct question directly from the textbook.
This prof isnt the worst prof Ive had by far but definitely a runner up. His slides are by far the worst. If you wanna pass highly recommend attending class and listening to what he says
Good prof, interesting. But this class is a lot of work. I wasnt a big fan of tests. Asked a lot of questions from book, and a lot from lectures, so you have to study both. With that being said, his classes arent boring and hes interactive and engaging. His lecturing skills are great. Only problem is he wants you know too much content
You really should go to class and do all the readings to ensure that you get a high grade in this class. McCann rambles sometimes, which is annoying, but he shows videos and talks about things in lectures that aren't in the readings that are on the tests, so attendance is a must. The readings are a bit heavy, but they really help with the tests.
Dr. McCann is a great professor. He kept his lectures fairly entertaining, although you NEED to attend lectures, watch the videos, take good notes, and read the textbook to pass his class. Study hard before tests. With A LOT of initiative, it is very possible to get a very high grade.
Doug is an amazing guy but this class was a lot of work. I wasn't a fan of his tests as they were only multiple choice and covered a lot of content. His lectures were very engaging but there was too much content to know for a first-year course.
He posted pre-recorded lectures and was quite clear in explaining the topics. Make sure to read the textbook along with watching the lectures. Take notes on everything he says during lectures and any extra material he posts such as videos and articles as he will quiz you on it during tests.
The lectures were asynchronous. He explained the topics well. The tests were mainly focused on the readings. The readings are long so make sure you do a little every day. It's hard to catch up with this course.
Overall a great professor. His lectures cover the readings you need to do and are very straight forward. I did two tests with him teaching since he does the first half of this course, and easily did well. Definitely make notes on the readings and study them. They will help!
Rly just no. So inconsiderate especially during the pandemic completely eliminated the last test worth 20% and it ruined my mark and basically just said too bad
The lectures were pre-recorded. He seems really nice. The tests were all multiple choice. Once you study the readings and watch the assigned videos you'll be in good shape for the test. He was very understanding when I was sick and needed to miss a test. Overall, extremely nice!
His lectures are prerecorded for online classes. They're interesting but very messy. I would recommend taking Doug's class in person when possible. Readings are pretty heavy. Tests are a pretty even mix of lecture and textbook material. Remember to watch any TED Talks he links as they will be on tests. Overall, great lecturer and would recommend.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. Took online PSYCH 1010 with him and his lectures were on PowerPoint but you couldn't view it without watching the WHOLE thing at once. Provided notes for W sem but they were out of order and unorganized. Not to mention his voice recordings were terrible and missing parts. Had to WORK for this course. Hard tests
I loved Dr. McCann! His lectures were embedded along PowerPoints which required for me to download and covert the files into a .ppt. Chapters from the textbook are heavy and TedTalks were somewhat long, but by taking good notes on them will earn an easy A. Study min. 1 week before tests
His lectures are okay but being online, there were random parts missing sometimes. The readings are quite heavy and you have to keep up with them weekly or you will fall behind. Watch the videos he links - they will be on the test! Not a fan of his tests (which are the only grading criteria) -- its all multiple choice and a bit difficult at times.
Average prof. His tests are super specific as he often throws in random questions, like "What did Doug say about ____ in his lecture". Just make sure you write down notes on the lectures and make sure you read the textbook!
PowerPoint slides are very hard to manage, took me almost a whole semester to figure it out. Often times you can hear him lick and smack his lips over the microphone and you can hear him clearing his throat as well. Tests are also very strict and specific so make sure you study every lecture, posted videos, and textbook (if you have time for this)
I wasn't excited about having to take psychology, but really enjoyed Professor McCanns lectures. He was able to bring current, interesting references to what we were learning. He provided a reasonable amount of supplementary resources (mostly Ted Talks), but be prepared for lots of text book reading. 4 tests for the year 60 mins/60 Q's per test.
90% of your grade depends on tests that evaluate your memory of key details/definitions from the textbook and ted talks he posts (there are a lot of ted talks). Lectures are long and boring and you can't pause due to their format. You MUST read the textbook, lectures are very bare bones.
Do not take psych with him if you want a good mark. his M/C is setup to make you get a bad mark. he purposely words them horribly. His lectures are horribly boring and just overall would not recommend if you're looking for a good grade.
Honestly, the best prof I had in uni so far. Don't agree with some comments claiming that lectures are boring. He always makes classes engaging and funny( only the first 3 lectures may be tough, but the rest will be interesting, trust me). + tests are only MC. As long as you are interested in psychology- taking a course with him will be a pleasure
Literally all you have to do is read the textbook chapters and attend class in order to get a good grade. He takes breaks during his lectures and always ends them at least 30mins early. Although some of the lecture content can be boring, he makes jokes and includes videos to make it more enjoyable. Really easy class.
Absolutely amazing lectures. Really makes you care about the topic. Great professor, I highly recommend Dr. McCann.
Professor McCann was the first prof in my two years of university that I feel like I actually learned from. I felt he did a great job in lectures apposed to simply reading off of slides or talking directly from the textbook readings. I recommend going to all of the lectures because he shares a lot of videos and stories that will be on tests.
one of my favourite lectures to go to
Hands down the best prof you could have for PSYC 1010! The examinations are very fair and you should be able to get an A+ if you read the textbook and lecture slides (+ notes). Lectures are long but Professor McCann's presentation manages to keep it engaging and fun almost all the time. His enthusiasm on the subject almost made me switch majors!
Professor McCann's PSYC1010 class is a mixed bag - engaging lectures but tough exams. Reading the textbook and attending class are a must. unstuck study helped me prep for the specific questions. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
