He's an okay teacher, tends to get a little off-topic during the lecture. Very willing to help you IF YOU ASK. Quizzes are online, easy and open book. Tests are multiple choice. Study and you'll do fine.
This man loves to say "That's a great question!"... If you haven't had Biology recently, be prepared to be confused half the time. He's oftentimes unclear when answering questions and teaching. Puts up slides and talks directly from them. Whatever you do, don't waste the 158 dollars on the book unless you're a bio major or want it...
This guy expects ALOT out of his students. Every test so far has been and F average.. Very difficult in my eyes. Tests are SO hard. But hes a really nice guy and more than willing to help you one on one in his office times.
Dr.Mills is a wonderful professor. He is always available when you need extra help or have questions. His tests are not exactly easy but if you study and know most of the information you should get at least a B in the class. He grades on the curve and drops the lowest test score and lowest quiz score. I highly recomend him!
The class is taught at a low level, and then we're expected to regurgitate the material in beyond graduate level terms.
Great Teacher! He's very concerned with your success in his class and does his best to help. Although lecture may be boring for some... it is Biology afterall.
Very nice teacher. Meets with students the Tuesday and Thursday b4 the exams (you are not required to come to the study times). posts all his lecture slides online so you can print them off to take notes on and to study.
one of the most amazing biology teachers i have ever had in my life... he makes absolutely sure you understand what is going on and really cares about where you go in life. If you go to him after class, he'll explain things as much as you want and really talk to you. just make sure you go to class!! his ppts arent enough to study off of. TAKE HIM!
He can get off topic and never gives a clear answer to questions but he really helps you to understand the material and does care about the success of the class. If you study and attend class regularly you should be fine.
I must have messed up somewhere when I rated the professor before. Anyways, he can get off topic and never gives a clear answer to questions but he really helps you to understand the material and does care about the success of the class. If you study and attend class regularly you should be fine. Pretty good professor.
Really nice guy. Talks about his good buddy Steve a lot lol. But overall is very helpful outside of class hours. I rarely attend class and have an A. Just study his ppts day by day and you should be fine. Tests aren't difficult but multiple choice differs in minor words. Just study
He is a cool professor and i really helpful with anything you need. He will explain things until you get them. Fairly easy class. Take him he is the coolest professor i have had
Does some really funny stuff someitmes.
Professor Mills is a wonderful teacher. His lectures are informative and he is more then happy to help his students. His tests aren't always easy but if you study you will do good.
Dr. Mills is the easiest biology teacher ODU has ever had. Lectures are kind of boring but he gives study guides and study sessions the week before the test. Tests started out hard but he changed them so they were really easy. Wants the class average to be an 80 and curves until it is. Take him for an easy A.
He's a great teacher! Very easy class. His lectures are online and the reviews before the tests and reviews online help a lot! Very nice as a person and extremely helpful!
He is a good teacher, very helpful and does not teach for the sake of class but teaches for us to learn. His tests are a bit confusing but you will do well if you go to class and do the test reviews with him. He is great!!!
u may not need the textbook as he bases his quizes and tests off of the lecture (and he posts his powerpoints online), but we did use the book few times in lab last semester(I dont know about this one as it just started) so if u dont want to have to worry about someone else bringing theirs u may want one but u dont really need it 4 the class portio
Slides are very unclear and teach you nothing. Gets off topic a lot. Lab is the biggest joke in the world. Doesn't even want the class to learn any of the "hard" chemistry portion of the class. Easy class, but if you really want to learn more than middle school biology, he's NOT the professor for you. Sadly he's the only one who teaches bio 115
Professor is laid back and nice. Gives you opportunities to make up quizzes and tests. Enjoys talking a lot during lecture. But his powerpoint lessons are vague. Just study from the weekly quizzes he assigns and you should do well on the tests. They're basically all common sense concepts.
116 is much easier than 115 so if you have taken 115 with him do not be afraid to take 116. if you have not taken 115 dont be scared eithar:) as it is not too difficult (I got an A). All in all a pretty easy professor.
He is extremely kind, always interested that you are doing well in his class. He will help you with any problems you're having, curves test, and his labs are easy!
Soooo much easier than Wade's class. You really don't need the book. Just do the lab quizzes and study the quizzes and powerpoint notes to do well on the the test.
Lets see what can one say about Dr Mills? He is helpful, cares, and loves the subject. He tells you when he is not really up on a subject and loves when students start to debate in class. Labs are fun and not hard, quizes and test are well read them carefuly but fair. I hated the subject going in and now have another good experience to clean it up.
He is a really nice guy and the class that he teaches is more than likely going to be the easiest classes you will ever take.
he's the best!!! you can tell that he enjoys teaching and helpinng his students better understand the material. i'm actually sad that he'll no longer be my professor.
Dr. Mills' class is easy as long as you do the quizes and read the powerpoints. I took 115/116 and really enjoyed the class. Some students may complain that it was too easy but it's not an upper level class so it shouldn't be mind boggling. He really cares how you do and if you make an effort to be there he is willing to be flexible.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. seriously, even people who aren't slackers never opened it. The course is what's difficult, not Mill's class. He does a good job teaching and is a very down to earth nice guy. "Seriously, I'm not joking about this, Honestly." I'd choose him again
He's the BEST!! Really nice, understanding, great teacher.
Don't buy the book-- waste of money! Just study the power points and GO TO LECTURE. He's a cool guy and likes college students, and he has a funny laugh. It's not a hard course if you go to class and read the power points.
Easy class. I hardly ever go to lecture and just go to lab. If you read the powerpoints and take the quizzes you will get a good grade. I just struggled because I barely read the powerpoints. Easy teacher though.
Mr. Mills is insane (a good insane)! He LOVES teaching whatever topic your learning & he really expects you to think. Test come directly from the power points (he does have a lot of power points though). You should get 20/20 on every quiz. Labs are SUPER easy. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!
I never opened the textbook so don't waste the $200. He's the most annoying public speaker. Starts every sentence with "Guys" and ends every sentence with "but truthfully." Labs are easy. Attendence NOT mandatory, powerpoint's not helpful. Study weekly quizzes for tests. Hated this class, but was able to get a B+. Not looking forward to 116..

Dr. Mills is a great professor!! Gives weekly quizes that are extremely helpful for the tests. Can take each quiz three times. Tests come directly from powerpoints and quizes. VERY HELPFUL!! TAKE HIM!! Should get an A or B.
He is by far the best prof ever!! I dont really like lectures, but his class was helpful. I struggled a bit on the test, but I think I wasnt studying right. Anyway, TAKE HIM!!!!!! He is the best. I thought I was going to fail, but received a B. I would recommend him and cannot wait to see him for Bio 116 next semester!!!
Doug is a really cool guy. He will do whatever he can to help you pass the course. He does not like for people to talk during his lecture, he is cool, so check him out
CORNY, but helpful. Tests are HARD. Lectures BORING. Labs OK.
Great Professor. If you are willing to even put the slightest effort into the class Doug will do his best to make sure you do well. I didn't need to study much either semester cause Doug is awesome. Highly recommend taking his class.
Dr. Mills is an outstanding professor! He is one of the first professors who have ever made me consider changing my major to biological sciences. His lectures and accompanying powerpoints are almost spitting images of what to expect on a quiz or test. Use his lectures to grasp the concepts, and the textbook to study the information.
Nice guy, but he's right he's "full of yogurt." His lectures are boring and well if you really arent interested in biology its torture. He's a really passionate teacher who wants his students to grasp and understand the concepts being taught but powerpoints dont quite do it.
Lectures are basically reading the PowerPoints. Didn't quite prepare me for the actual tests, because the tests seemed to go more "in-depth" than the PowerPoints did. Dr. Mills himself is a nice, funny guy though and will help you whenever you have a question.
This is an extremely simple biology class. The tests are based off of the powerpoints and are 25 multiple choice. They tend to be a bit wordy. I received an A in 115 and 116 and never opened the book. Don't waste your money buying it just study the powerpoints. Dr. Mills really loves biology but class is kinda boring.
Great teacher, gives lots of extra credit if you show up to class. tests can be tricky, because of the awkward wording, but overall its not to bad.
This teacher is really boring and while he loves biology, he is rather "full of it". He tries to be helpful, but basically, I suck at multiple choice, and while I understand biology...his tests are wordy and confusing (hence my grade), weekly quizzes easy, and he says he'll give extra credit and doesn't.
Easy. just go over the notes 5 minutes before the exams.
He loves Biology more than life itself. weekly quizzes that are super easy. Tests are worded really weird so I always fail. Make sure you go over his powerpoints a lot, attendance isnt really a big deal he just goes over the powerpoints which he posts on blackboard.
Go to class, take notes, gives extra credit for attending lectures, tests are very hard because of wording, weekly quizzes are simple, he's a nice guy but is in love with biology and crams so much info in to a 25 question multiple choice test.
Attended only two classes but I scored 75%-90% on all 4 or 5 exams. Here's how - but the book (which he tells you NOT to buy) online and read the chapter summary. Then go to the website and review the concepts via the provided MP3 lectures, videos and animations. You basically teach yourself since this prof just read off of a slide.
Okay, so the quizes are easy which is good because the test are very hard!He is really into bio.He cares about his students though and is very helpful.Basically I have bombed my first 3 tests& he told me to not to worry about it.He does give extra credit every now&then for coming to class. You have to study, thats all I have to say.
Great professor!
A very nice guy who will help you if you need anything at all. His tests are very hard, but the quizzes are practically out of his powerpoints, and he gives some extra credit for coming to class. The labs are cake. Even though I didn't do that well on the tests, I still got an A.
He is a great guy and trys to be funny, and laughs at him self. Very easy going. You dont have to go to class, I always did but he does not keep tabs on it. He post his talks on line but will leave words out so you will want to go if you want the full talk.
I took this professor for both Bio 115 and 116. He is way easy, as long as you show up to class and just watch him lecture - that's most of the studying you'll need. He loves what he teaches and makes you interested in it too by pointing out a lot of real word applications.
SO BORING. he's a nice guy though and will help you out if you have questions or concerned about your grade. tests are hard and challenging. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK huge waste of money. take weekly quizzes online to study for tests
Great teacher that actually seems to care about his students. Likes class discussion which is unusual for a 200 student lecture hall but it is only for the benefit of the students. Test are usually straight forward- you either know it or you don't but there's usually that 1 hard test every semester. He's a nice guy but don't think he's a pushover.
This guy is really funny and his class is insanely easy. There's really no need to take notes; the powerpoints are perfect. My only complaint is he often freaked out about people talking, which I NEVER even heard haha. I can't emphasize how easy his exams are, seriously. If you have a hard time in this class, switch to a non-science major.
Hard test, words them all confusing. Weekly quizzes online are cake. Just go to class and listen to him speak about the power-points he gives so much more info on them and makes the topic much more clear. He does this inhale breathing thing and makes this funny noise, what a hoot.
I suppose he's an ok professor. I will say, however, he has to be the worst test-writer I've ever had. I find his questions to be very vaguely worded, which doesn't help me at all.
Easy teacher, very nice guy. Willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. Summer classes where you can explain your answers on his tests make for better grades than in the fall with scantrons. Enjoyed the class, you can tell that he really is passionate about his profession.
Great teacher! Don't need the book because he teaches off if slides, but you do need to come to class to learn material. Always willing to help his students!
Dr. Mills was an excellent teacher who would spend as much time with you as you wanted, his office hours were very flexible and he was a great professor. His tests were average, but if you studied the material they were easy. He wanted to help you succeed, and if you ever need help with anything he would give it to you. He helped me with what scien
He got pissed because everyone thought his class was a joke so now its pretty hard he says not to buy the book but i use it all the time since you cant hear him very will in his 100+ lecture with distractions you have to go to class to understand and clicker question are a test hes very nice studyguides arent too helpful tests are very general
Great teacher, you never have to open your textbook because he explains everything he wants you to know in Lecture, and he posts them all on BB, keeps class interesting, very understanding if anything comes up and you have to miss a test or something. Gives EC, door is always open and he is always looking to help his students when he can.
Took a few lectures to get used to his speaking style, but he definitely does a good of explaining. Plus he make it fun! Don't buy the textbook; he covers everything he expects you to know during class...so attend class!! The test weren't a cinch, but as long as you go to class and pay attention they are only mildly challenging. Great prof!
Great teacher. He explains everything and makes biology a lot more comprehensible. I'm a biology major and this is the first time that I have truly understood the material. Just go to the lectures, take the weekly quizes and study before the major quizes and you're set.
Great professor. do the online hw, show up to class for the clicker points and get a good grade in lab and you should be fine even if you dont do so hot on the tests.
Really kind and smart professor. Tests are a little difficult though but he tries to prepare everyone. Partial powerpoints are posted online and you can type the rest in during the lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory but you use a clicker usually each class. Points add up to a test grade which really helps. Questions are always true/false
Easy tests, study right from the PowerPoint and you will get an A.
Dr. Mills is really good. He's smart, funny, and he truly cares about the students. I got an A in biology, and it's because of him. He has an open door policy (literally!) and you can tell bio is his passion. COME TO CLASS & get your clicker points, and he will recognize/remember your face and name, even with 150 people. That's pretty cool.
He is one of the best professors. He is extremely passionate about biology, which makes him all the better. He is also extremely intelligent; he's knows just about everything, and if he doesn't, he will say so. All you need to do is stay on top of the work: online hw, study guides for tests, labs, and clicker points. It's a great class to take.
he is a greattt prof., if you go to class he gives clicker points that help out alot, his tests can vary from easy to hard but def. study the notes the most, there isnt much out of the textbook unless you don't understand the material, i would reccommend him!! he is very nice!
Dr. Mills is an awesome teacher! Although his test are extremely awkwardly worded, there are other ways to get grades. He will do anything for his students, and he clearly enjoys teaching Biology. He makes a funny wheezing sound when he laughs at himself too! Go to class so you can your clicker points and get all the notes you need to study!
Dr. Mills is a great teacher. If you go to lecture, he goes over everything you need to know for the tests multiple times. He is passionate about what he teaches and encourages class participation, comments, etc. If you do go to lecture, which I HIGHLY recommend, DO NOT text, talk, use facebook... People did that and he asked them to leave.
I had Dr. Mills for Both semesters of Biology and he is by far the best teach at this school, he explains everything very well, and all his test are multiple choice, you don't even need a textbook just come to class and pay attention to the lectures. Do the homework (which is easy) and come to class and there is no reason you should not get an A.
LOVE this professor. Very clear on topics and is very inspired by what he teaches. If your having trouble in the class take time to talk to him after lecture, he's more than happy to help or make small talk :)
Dr. Mills expects you to come to class and behave like an adult. If you do this, he will do everything he can to help you. He doesn't believe in babying the class, so as long as you act like an adult, he will treat you like one. Very approachable outside of class, and more than willing to help those students who require extra assistance.
I took Bio during the summer and it was pretty easy. Go to class everyday, take notes. This is one of the few classes I would consider taking during the summer just because its all memorization. His tests although a tad wordy are from his notes. Overall great teacher.
AWESOME teacher! he is verrrry helpful and loves his job. He likes to crack jokes sometimes and he makes the information relatable to everyday life.
One of the best professors I've ever taken! This course can be very intimidating, but his passion for the subject matter makes it very interesting and easy to understand. Dr. Mills is also very approachable and open to questions, both during/after lecture and during office hours - even via email. I found the textbook useful for 115, but not 116.
Mills is the best professor I have had so far. His tests are hard for a lot of people, but I did well on them just because I prepared adequately for them. Go talk to him even once and he'll learn your name and be really friendly to you. He is great to talk to outside of class. He is very dedicated to his work, and very helpful if you go to him.
Awesome guy he is extremely helpful and only wants students to pass. His lectures are hilarious and even though it is not mandatory to go to class it is reccomended because he only puts up notes during class and doesn't put them online. Tests can be tricky but he goes out of his way to make sure everyone passes.
Overall great teacher! He really does try to help the students in any way he can and really is in their best interest. Key notes are to show up to class and literally pay attention to lecture and really actually go to him for help because he will. Tests are a bit difficult though, so make sure to study a little bit for it in advance.
Interesting character, sometimes a bit difficult to understand but if you go to him for help he will gladly help you. Make sure you attend class because he gets most the test questions from his lectures
He is a great guy. I don't really like his lectures, and his tests are really hard, but if you do the homework you should be good. He will work things out with you if you need help.
This is a lecture, online homework, tests kind of class. If you go to class, you are more likely to get an understanding about what his test questions will be like. I never failed any tests, but I always studied his slides diligently. He is very understanding if you have something come up or miss a deadline.
Very interesting personality. Dr. Mills brings a fun level of enthusiasm to the lecture. He can go very quickly and be difficult to keep up with on occasion however will gladly meet with you or email to clear anything up. His tests are tough and altho attendance is not required, I would suggest it if you don't want to struggle.
Why didn't he have a chili pepper? He's older but hot. I love him - he seems really good natured!Stops ppl from distracting which is great, explains things well but sometimes quickly(& says U Guys).Hmwk is easy to mildly challenging.Tests are hard & he mis-phrased at times but let me get 1 pt bk.Grad-led Lab was ok but it got WAY too loud&cliquish.
took him for 115/116 and now I'm a TA for his class. He's a cool teacher tests are really hard made it out with a B in both classes just come to class and see him afterclass for help.
One of the best teachers I've ever had hes really nerdy but its nerdy enough that its amusing and funny not annoying if his class is open TAKE IT
This class is boring and repetitive. The tests are hard--only because it's more on reading comprehension and what he thinks is right than what is actually the true answer. Take this class and get an A. You won't glean any knowledge from it, so if you're trying to advance in the subject...take someone else.
He's quirky and nice. His topics don't always match up well... one day we discuss the immune system of humans, the next day water transport of plants, and then back again to humans and the cardiovascular system. His course would be much better if structured in a more cohesive manner. He does genuinely care about his students...which is refreshing.
Doug is a really nice guy. He wants to help students out but its only so much he can do without being taken advantage of. Tests come from study guide questions in the powerpoints. Study those and you're good. Homework is due every Friday. He answers all questions without making you feel stupid unlike some professors.
I had him for both 115 and 116. He's nice, but that's about it. I'm not impressed.
He is basically a bad high school teacher. Doesn't really teach you anything. Leaves information out of power points on purpose so that you have to go to class for his answers. He makes the class that so you get a good grade by trying hard and coming to class rather than being intelligent.
outgoing teacher, test come from the notes; however, you will want to go to class because the notes online are missing stuff that he fills in during class.
I guess something happened to the point where he doesn't post the power points onto blackboard anymore. He's a very nice guy however his test are very wordy be sure to know know the material.
Had him for 115/116...genuinely cares if students succeed (as long as he knows you're putting forth an effort). IMO, i don't see how you can pass w/o attending class (tests are centered around info/notes given in lecture). Very enthusiastic about Biology, has an open door office policy & laid back in general.
He is probably the most vague teacher I have ever had. Even when you question him directly he still never actually answers the question. I think you would have to water board him to get a straight answer. Very hard to comprehend the material when he is try to assure us that we need to learn this. We know quit telling us and teach us. Not impressed
His class is really hard! Students weren't showing up to class when he posted the powerpoints online, so he no longer gives them. There are no study guides for the tests, and the tests are very wordy. You never really know whats going to be on them either, because he doesnt go over it. There is no review.
I don't know why people are struggling with this class..it's not that it's hard, you just have to focus. I'm a bio major and put effort into the class, showed up for every (8 AM) lecture, completed all the questions posted to blackboard (that's what the study guide for the tests are..) they can be helpful but mainly study all your notes! so easy..
Very vague with his lecture instruction, if you don't utilize lecture notes and the textbook, you will fail.
difficult class, a lot of information covered, studying is mandatory, I recommend the textbook, lively personality but very vague. as a non science major I do not recommend this class.
To everyone saying he doesn't give study guides: MAYBE IF YOU WENT ON BLACKBOARD AND GOT THE OUTLINES YOU WOULD SEE THE STUDY GUIDE QUESTIONS. Overall, he is a great teacher. He's very funny, and extremely smart. VERY HARD CLASS! Tests are very hard, but if you study the book, go to class, and read the notes you'll be fine. HINT: DO STUDY GUIDE Q's
Mills is a nice person. I always emailed him or talked to him and he was helpful. he let us out of class early, mostly. he gave us helpful and study sheets for the test.the only thing i suggest is to read the notes carefully and after every class.
Professor is very dry and corny but attendance is vital to success in his class. All tests and homework rely solely on the lectures. Although they can be boring most times, if you can survive them you can survive the class. I have to admit though, maybe his class would be more interesting if I hadn't took AP Bio in high school.
Doug is a funny dude I don't care what anyone says. He repeats himself a lot emphasizing certain things. Download his power points on blackboard and fill them in with your notes. pretty easy class if you show up more often than not.
To those critizing him for not giving you answers, welcome to college. I received an A in the class, the second part, a C in the first because I didn't study on my part. His lectures have everything you need to know for the tests and test questions come right from the powerpoint questions. Meet him halfway and you will do well.
Dr. Mills is a wonderful professor. He is very helpful and his office hours are very flexible. He will work with you outside of lecture to make sure you understand the material. Everything you need for his test and online homework is in his lecture information but you must come to class!
If you go to class and pay attention, you will get an A. (Test questions basically come straight from powerpoint notes that you can only get in class!) Very helpful and you can tell he is very enthusiastic about what he is teaching. Kinda cheesy, but at least he isn't boring. Also, you don't need to buy the book!
very cheesy and boring, had to get a tutor, stutters alot, class is mandatory. would get A's on labs and weekly homeworks, but always failed the tests
Great professor who is willing to help and answer any questions. Pay attention in class and you will be fine. Test come right from the powerpoint and homework and labs are an easy A.
A real college class here. Yes it's hard, but it's general bio - it shouldn't be too easy. He told the class to talk to him if we ever needed help on anything. He isn't very clear on explaining some things (usually when answering questions) but he does emphasize important points. Tests are challenging; I suggest flash cards! Read notes repeatedly!
Dr. Mills is a cool guy, but he is a hard professor. He is superfluously knowledgeable and knows exactly what he is talking about, but expects you to be the same. The only way to do well is to go to class, take good notes, and study them well. Warning: he says "ya know?" and "guys" ALL the time.
Doug was my best professor this semester. He is extremely passionate about the material. He is very clear and concise and his lectures are always interesting and he keeps everyone engaged. As an older student, I appreciate this. It seems lost on the younger crowd though. I highly recommend talking to him after class if you have the time.
He's a great professor and a great guy. He tends to ramble a bit but it's nothing unbearable. He literally gives you the tests questions as "hints" during the lecture. The guy is interested in our success. The tests questions are a bit tricky so studying is important.
Mills is a good professor. Will give you hints about what will be on the exam, but they are worded to trick you. Study the notes, do the study guides he provides you, do well on the homework and lab, and you'll be fine.
Mills is a great teacher and an awesome guy. He is super passionate about his field and is always willing to stay after class and discuss questions. He is by far my favorite teacher so far. I have never used the textbook because he pulls his tests straight from the notes. The tests are made to see if you actually know the material so study!
One of the easiest courses I have ever taken. He has a very self deprecating sense of humor. Hopefully he finally finds a girlfriend.
Mills is decent at best. His lectures were very vague and his tests were very difficult. I had to study A LOT for this class. On the bright side, the homework and lab made my grade much higher
Dr. Mills is one of my favorite professors at ODU. This is always a class that I have had to work hard in, but I have never had to worry about it. Hint: attend class, take notes, and there is no way you can fail. I made an A in both Bio 115 and 116. He is kind of out there, but it is hilarious once you become accustomed to it. Take this class!
Doug is a really great guy! He has a chill personality but he's very passionate about science. His humor is weird but he's sure to make you laugh at some point. He's flexible with office hours if you need extra help, but you must attend class for a good understanding of material. Tests can be tricky but use the notes to study.
He's such a nice man. He is so flexible and will work around your schedule if you contact him and work with him. Tests are very difficult because of the amount of information. I never used the textbook and it was $300...don't buy it. Do the homework without "hints" and you'll get EC-you can google it all. Do well in lab your it'll boost your grade!
Good teacher who has a sense of humor. PP's are helpful but take notes of your own for clarity. His test are worded kind of tricky but its no way you can fail this class with the help of the homework and labs.
I learned more from Dr. Mills than any other science instructor I've ever had in my life.
Good professor, corny jokes, but have a laugh that makes you laugh. Test are easy if you show up to class and review the slideshow presentations. Very interesting subject.
Mills cares so much about his students. Puts so much effort into constantly improving his course. Really helpful no need for an appointment or to come during office hours if hes in his office he'll talk to you. Tests come DIRECTLY from recap and study guide ?'s in the ppts. Study those, it's exactly the info he thinks is importantwants u to know.
Hardest class I have taken.
He is very active and not only is he there for everyone when you ask for help, he asks legitimate questions during class. He doesn't go off topic, he keeps all of his lectures online, and on top of everything all you really have to do is one homework once a week and write down titles for powerpoint slides. He gives you all the tools to succeed.
Study the power point slides and you will do just fine. Very passionate man about his field and loves to help. He is always available in office hours and will drop what he is doing to help you. Don't expect to get out quick, he likes to talk! Great man!! If you are interested in science, take this class! Very interesting!!!
Go to class and write down the titles to the powerpoints. For studying, he puts the study guides to the powerpoints at the end of each powerpoint and takes the test questions directly from there. he practically spoon-feeds you the information and if you do the homework and study the powerpoints it is easy to get an a.
Dr Mills is the best. He helps you if you're struggling and is super funny. At the beginning of the year he bombards your e-mails with study tips, resources, information about campus involvement and internshipjob opportunities. He posts all of his lectures online (minus titles) and his tests are required to be taken in the library testing center.
Really likes what he teaches and he's a pretty funny, chill guy. Always responds to e-mails! Even though the PowerPoints are on BB, I suggest going to lectures bc he usually talks more in depth on them. Tests are kind of hard, just study & DON'T PROCRASTINATE bc you won't pass them if you do.
Tests are ONLY based off of lecture notes. Do the Study Guide questions listed after every pwpt, it tells you everything you need to know for the tests. Final is not cumulative - just the last module. XC built into the online HW. Attendance is not required but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Always gives hints on future test questions! Has "Dad" humor.
He literally tells you what is going to be on the test if you show up to class. He also takes all of his test questions from the powerpoints. He really cares about his class and will actually get to know you by name. One of the most caring professors I have met!
Make it to class as often as possible, and pay attention to the lectures. Sometimes it's pretty dry, but everything he goes over is on the tests. He really seems to care about the topics he's discussing, so even if there isn't time during class, he's willing to talk afterward.
He's a really great guy and you can tell that he enjoys Biology and his job, but teaching isn't his best forte. Most of the tests are based off what's said in class instead of what's on the powerpoints. If you need help, he always answers his emails.
Mills is an awesome professor. He's willing to help you, and is open to questions and engagement throughout lecture. His tests literally come word for word from his notes, so just study hard because it's a lot of material. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Mills is my favorite professor ever so far. Lectures are clear-cut and easy to understand. Cracks jokes in class and reels you in to participate. Tests are easy if you study well and homework isn't too difficult. Easy A if you put work into it.
Dr. Mills is the best professor I have had since I started going to school. He is very understanding since he knows how hard school can get. Words from the wise, do not miss his classes and if you have to, email him. He always responds to emails. If you skip too many of his classes, you will not pass hence you will conclude his tests are difficult.
if you show up to class and copy the title of each slides and reread the slides after class you will pass. if you show up to class you will pass because he goes over test questions in class. He's a great teacher. He's understandable and nice. If you have a question, don't be afraid to ask it, he will answer it. Plus you don't have class on Fridays!
Attend Class. Write down the titles to the power points in lecture. He is clear cut and to the point. You must study in order to pass. Test are hard but the questions come directly from the powerpoint. So if you study you will do fine. I love this Professor.
He is an amazing professor! He is so passionate about biology, which helps keep the class interesting. He really knows his stuff and can answer just about any question you have. Don't hesitate to ask him any questions if you have them because he enjoys answering them and gives detailed answers. His tests are easy if you study the powerpoints.
Doctor Mills has been one of my favorite professors at old dominion university. He is kind and I could see his genuine effort to help each and every one of his students. He is passionate about biology, and will put students into contact with professionals and professors in the field of your interest without hesitation. Adore this man! Funny too.
He's very passionate about what he's teaching!
Just like everyone else has noted, if you study the powerpoints, you will pass his tests.
I took Dr. Mills for BIOL 121/122 and BIOL 123/124. He is an amazing professor. He is always willing to help his students. Dr. Mills encourages his students to participate. He also offers opportunities and advice to students pursing biology related internships/ research. There are 5 tests and a homework grade, so study. Overall, I would recommend.
Greatest professor ever!
By far the best professor at ODU! Super nice, super helpful guy that has such a passion for Biology! 5 tests and weekly online homework! Office hours are helpful, as well as his constant email reminders. Provides notes online but leaves the title header out to encourage more students to attend class. Overall a great class!
One of my all-time favorites! Passionate about Biology! Lectures seem to drag but he does his best to keep them interesting with small videos. Don't have to attend class but then you won't know what the title headers for the powerpoints are. Tests are 40 questions, so you really need to know your stuff to get a good grade on it! You will enjoy him!
Will work with you but you have to be respectful in class. No phones, no talking, and pay attention.
He clearly explains his lectures and makes them easy to understand.
He laughs at his own jokes and says "hey guys" before basically every statement he makes. 2-3 short online HW assignments each week. HW is harder than anything you'll see on tests. Gives examples of what test questions he'll ask about a topic after he goes over it. Powerpoints have example questions too. Great at clarifying if you have questions.
Whether you're interested in biology or not, this class still requires effort. Dr. Mills is super nice and is always willing to help. If you *understand* the study guide questions & the answers to them at the end of each powerpoint, you will do well on the tests. The online HW is annoying, but it definitely boosts your grade so do it!
He's the best professor there is on campus, but the way he gives lectures isn't the way he gives his exams. He tests you based on the way you make connections from the lectures given. If you aren't good with making connections you won't do well because most of the grades are either from exams or online homework labs.
The key to passing this class is going to class in order to get the slide titles. The titles are major. Do the online homework to help pad your grade also. Communication will benefit you. Mills is a nice guy.
Very good lectures, makes class interesting because he is very into what he is teaching. Material is pretty straight forward just go over powerpoints for tests. Highly recommended. has offered at least one small task for extra credit a semester and I recommend doing it because it will help you in the end.
This course is pretty simple, but that's not why people love Mills. This guy is really interesting and funny. What a great lecturer! He really does a fantastic job of explaining the material so it seems like common sense.
Everyone told me he was such a great teacher, but I don't get it. He's nice, but his lectures are long and full of information. His tests are extremely hard and studied hours for them. At least he changed the homework from being due every two days to every Friday. Take at own risk and if you only have easy classes.
I have never hated a science so much in my life! I loved Biology in high school, but that all changed when I took it with Professor Mills. I liked him at first, but that went down hill when I took my first test. I studied for hours and still managed to get a D. Very aggravating! Take at own risk.
There are five tests, all of which are impossible to study for because the practice questions at the end of the slides are useless, PASS is useless, Connect is useless, and no matter how hard you study, it's hard to do good on the tests. He's nice seeming and funny, but unhelpful for tests and there's few assignments to be graded on.
Dr. Mills is very knowledgeable in everything Biology related. He's a great professor, but the tests are pretty difficult. Make sure to do the textbook readings along with the Connect practice. If you're taking Bio 2, he really likes to ask test questions on plants.
His lectures are very boring. I didn't really bother to come to class when I took him in the fall (2016). Just read all of his powerpoints from Blackboard. You should be fine if you have a good memory. There are also online Connect assignments to do. I found those harder than the actual tests, but I guess they help. Got an A in the class!
I studied hours for Dr. Mills test an still got 70's. Lectures are boring but he'll meet with you to discuss your grades/scores. It's a difficult class but study groups will be you best friend in this class because you cannot do it alone!! Good luck!
Not too sure why a lot of people find this class to be so difficult... it's general bio? Professor Mill's is one of the most caring and professional professors I have had at ODU. I went to every class, took notes, studied a day or two before the tests and found that they were really easy. Just put forth the effort!
Ezpz class. Prof is always available to talk and is willing to go over tests afterwards to see what you got wrong. Study from his slides, show up to class. He really spends a lot of time on making the lectures and I think he gets sad when people skip all the time. Just pay attention and it's an easy A.
He is a great professor and cares about his students.
He is very caring outside of class and easy to talk to, but his tests are horrible! I don't think I can take Bio 123N with him because this class is way too heavy for a non Biology major. I studied at least 20 hours for one of his tests and still didn't pass! I wouldn't take him if you care about your GPA. Go to a Community College instead!
This class was harder then 121N, however its the same concept. All the tests are based off the lecture. This class was a bit more challenging however, study hard and READ the PowerPoints several times, make sure you understand the concepts, watch videos, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. If you follow these tips youll be sure to pass with an A!
Dr. Mills is one the most respected professors at ODU. He really cares about his students and thrives for everyone to succeed. Please take advantage of PASS and is office hours for extra help. My mistake was not taking advantage of help sources. He is one of the best professors you will have at ODU.
Pros: Curved grades, no textbook, few tests, few assignments, entertaining lectures, responsive to emails. Cons: Difficult exams, lots of studying, unclear study guides. This class depends on how you learn and how willing you are to go to group study sessions.
Does not use textbook. Curves tests and drops lowest test score. I suggest printing out the study guide questions at the end of the powerpoints and answering the questions during the lecture
Professor Mills is my favorite professor at ODU. His lectures are information-dense but he makes them understandable and he's naturally a funny guy, which makes it better. His tests are right off the content he teaches in class so as long as you study you'll do well. I wish I could take him for every bio course I need.
Professor Mills is a great professor. Don't bother buying the text book because you will not need it. All of the test questions come from the notes that he provides off Blackboard. The tests were pretty easy, and there were a lot of homework but they were pretty easy as well. He does take attendance and has in class work.
Dr. Mills' tests are straight from the powerpoint slides, but it may be a small detail. If you have good discipline on going to class you will be fine. Sometimes his lectures are dry, but the powerpoints are very clear. He gives you study questions that form an outline for the test. I think he gets a bad rap because people don't know how to study.
Attendance wasn't mandatory but counted towards points. Used a service (tophat) for in-class participation.
Great professor ,really nice ,and cares about his students performance.
Attendance is very helpful. Questions in class are helpful to predict test questions. Attending PASS is really helpful too. Study the PowerPoints, go to class, and you will do good. You'll have to wait in line to talk to him, but he will take time with you to clear up whatever question or issue you do have.
Dr. Mills try's his best to be a good teacher, and it was not the teaching aspect that always stumped me. It is like his tests were a whole different professors. If you go to him for help he just repeats his same comments. There is not enough extra work to make up for low test grades.
Dr. Mills is an outstanding prof here at ODU. He is passionate, educated, and an incredible instructor. So far he is the best prof i've ever had! Take the class, get to know how he test (all lecture) and you should do well as long as you study! Make flash cards right off of the slides and you'll crush the tests. They were hard but Mills preps you.
"So you guys get this, the basics? Of course, Doug." He says this pretty often. Here's some things you should look out for in this class: Req. "Top Hat" for participation, approx. $25 5-6 Tests, can have tricky/confusing wording No minus/plus grades, only A/B/C/D/F Connect code is an included cost for this class He's kinda funny unintentionally.
Dr. Mills was an amazing professor. He is very much interested in answering any questions you have. He don't make you feel dumb, no matter what kind of question you ask. He is very caring, and is willing to stay after to help you in any way. He is very accommodative when it comes to tests and homeworks as long as it is for a good reason. Great Man!
He's super enthusiastic about his lectures and posts lectures on BB along with study guide questions for each lecture, which is super helpful. Online homework due on Fridays. Tests aren't too difficult as long as you put in the time to study. He basically tells you what information will be on the test, so go to class. Neat guy.
Mills is a fantastic lecturer and his immense effort is evident through his lectures! Powerpoints can be hard to understand sometimes if you miss class, however, study guides are very similar to tests. Tests are all multiple choice, wording can be difficult, but overall simple if you study powerpoints repeatedly.
Hes a good professor but he cant teach. All his lectures are boring and they put you right to sleep. Hes a really friendly person.
First semester of Bio 121n was all harder than the Bio123n in my opinion. Just attend the lectures and go over the presentations from the lectures and you should get a Decent grade. I just studied those, and I got an A in both classes. He really cares about his students so if you have an issue, go talk to him and he will guide you in the right way.
Dr. Mills is a great professor. The tests are completely based on the lectures/powerpoints so if you go over the powerpoints on Blackboard you should be fine. There are about 5/6 tests and weekly connect homework assignments. Also uses Tophat for in class participation. He tries to make the information interesting and loves when you ask questions.
Dr. Mills loves what he does! His lectures are all powerpoint, but they are incredibly well done. He breaks topics down in easy to understand ways and lets you know questions that will be on the exam. This class is a bit more difficult if you don't put in the effort. The textbook goes over a lot more info than you need to know.
I absolutely love mills!!! He is a great professor. He does not like when people talk during class, which is completely understandable. He is great. I am taking him for Bio 123N!! Study the questions on the powerpoint, and you will be fine!
Doug is a really good professor, his lectures are really good but sometimes it can be hard to pay attention (might just be me). He practices his lectures beforehand so he really cares about the class and he likes to make jokes a lot which is nice. He says "hey guys" A LOT so prepare ha! Also, go to the pass sessions, the tests can get hard.
Hes a really easy teacher, he curves your test even if you got a perfect score. Its a really easy class if you just look at the powerpoints to study for the tests.
His teaching style is lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but I suggest showing up and taking notes. He posts his PP and his tests come directly from them, so you must memorize his PP if you want a good grade. It is a lot of studying before the tests and your grade basically is just the tests, but he does curve and drops the lowest test grade.
Honestly I hated Mills. He is extremely petty when hes teaching. You cant even use the bathroom during class without him calling you out. Had a friend who was a point off from getting a B and they didnt get it because Mills is that petty.
I absolutely love Professor Mills! Would gladly take another one of his classes. Gives detailed answers to your questions and really seems invested in his students. Take some time to talk to him after class and see what you can learn from him. Does give plenty of homework but as a bio major that's to be expected.
I really love Dr. Mills. He is an excellent professor, and lecturer. All exams are based off of his powerpoint presentations, so don't bother studying the online textbook. Homework is mandatory, and is graded upon completion so as long as you finish on time, you'll do well. He says "Hey Guys" a lot but after awhile you tune it out. 10/10 great guy
Doug has been one of the best professors I have encountered at ODU. If more professors were like him, I'm sure ODU would quickly rise to be a top school. I had to take Doug's courses last minute over the summer. So, with two semesters worth of information to learn in two months, I'm amazed at how much I learned. Would definitely recommend!
He conveys the material clearly and encourages questions. I enjoyed his class, and he was always available to help.
Dr. Mills was a decent professor. I'll be honest, I didnt go to class for a solid 2 months and still walked out with a B. The tests are online in the tesing center and are a medium difficulty; if you study the material you will be fine. The connect assignements are long, but are a completion grade. Will be taking hime again for BIOL 123/124.
Professor Mills is a good professor. He can be confusing at times but he will help you understand if you go see him outside of class. He mainly reads off of his powerpoints If you go to class though he will gove extra credit question on top hat, so I highly recommend that you go to class. His tests are hard but he will help you in the class.
Amazing professor. He will go out of his way to help his students. His lectures are interesting and he prepares PowerPoints for them as study guides for students. All tests are multiple choice and easy if you study.
Great professor! Weekly Connect HW, 5 multiple choice exams that are directly from the powerpoints. Exams test memorization and application, so understanding the overall concepts is key. Dr. Mills genuinely wants his students to succeed and is always available for help or to answer any questions.
The lecture is fun and interesting if you like biology. All the exam questions are from his powerpoints. It should be an easy A if you keep track of the exam date and study the PowerPoint beforehand. He does drop 1 lowest exam grade.
You can tell he's really interested in what he's teaching and he tries to make the content relatable. He's also pretty easy to talk to, whether you meet him during office hours or just send him an email. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities and the lowest exam grade gets dropped. Just don't use your phone during his lecture.
Super nice guy and he's always willing to help and answer your questions. He posts his lectures on blackboard and each powerpoint has a short study guide at the end (which helps a lot when doing exam prep). He offers extra credit opportunities too, but you'll only know about them if you show up to class.
Honestly, greatest teacher in a long time! You can tell he just really cares about the students and his profession. Go to class, respect the teacher, take some notes on the powerpoints and you will be prepared! If you need to miss class, email a few days before and he will likely give you full credit for participation. Love him!
Very good professor, easiest course ever
Professor Mills is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. You have to show up to class, but he makes it enjoyable and if you participate and stay engaged in the class, he will love you! I had him for bio 121 and 123. I always enjoyed his class and both semesters I stayed engaged. He wrote me some amazing letters of recommendation!
Dr Mills is great, he goes out of his way to help students even when not asked for, he is also forgiving and will give extensions if you ask. I went to maybe 5 or 6 classes this semester and still got an A. Just study his powerpoints for the test
Really nice teacher, you could tell he loves teaching his subject. Recommend going to class, itll help you with the tests. The homework is a lot of reading and note taking because you have to answer a bunch of questions after the reading and get them right until you move on to the next topic. Also he was kind of monotone during lectures.
Actually explains slideshows & doesnt just read off them without any further explanation. Tests are on material that he covers and he tells you what you should know prior to the test date.
Dr. Mills will take time to ensure that you understand the material. He actually makes an effort to know student names and future goals and will go out of his way to send resources to help you succeed.
LOVE DOUG. He is really great. He loves biology, and you can see that when he teaches. He is goofy. The subjects are difficult but tests are very easy, and he has some exam/practice questions in his powerpoint slides if/when you go to lecture.
Dr. Mills is literally the best, super understanding about everything and always accessible outside of class
his Lectures are super easy to understand. Dr. Mills provided practice exams question during his lecture, which really helps to pass the exam. Exams/Tests are super easy to pass along as you study the practice exams questions.
Hes very caring and helpful
He will the best professor. He answers every question you could have and every test is based off of the PowerPoints. His lectures really help you learn the PowerPoints and he covers the test material well in lecture.
Dr. Mills is a solid professor who seems genuinely excited to educate others. He mainly teaches from the powerpoint, which can be a bit boring at times, but everything you need to know for the tests is provided in the notes. If you took AP Bio in high school, then this class is extremely easy.
Prof Mills is great! Engaging, loves questions, and not rude. Take photos of the practice questions during lecture (they are not on canvas)! For exams (one every ~3 weeks), use the study guide at the end of every lecture (make flash cards!). McGraw Hill modules are due every Friday by 5. They are like IXL. No quizzes, only tests & weekly work.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PROFESSOR!!! Great lectures, explains content thoroughly, tests are straight-forward and not insanely difficult. Really great teacher and class.
Prof Mills is great! He gave really fun lectures, and he loves to answer questions. Your grade is literally only two things. Tests and attendance. So go to class and study hard for the tests and you'll have no issue here. Tests could be challenging so like I said give yourself time to study and learn the material.
If you are a fresham picking your classes for the first semester there is no other option its Prof. Mills if you want a good first year experience.
There is no better professor for biology at this school- definitely worth an 8 am class for! He is engaging and gives great lectures. His study guides at the end of every lecture are all you need to pass, so if you fail this class it is definitely your fault 100%. He is an amazing professor and truly cares about his students.
Dr. Mills is so incredibly kind. The tests are easy to study for and he offers extra credit for each test. He loves questions and participation. He was definitely worth taking an 8am for.
Prof Mills makes biology fun with engaging lectures. Tests are challenging but practice questions and unstuck ai help prep. Go to class, study the material, and you'll do great.
i enjoy taking this class with him. you can really tell how much he cares and how passionate he is about teaching. the material can be difficult but he puts things in terms that we are better able to understand and explains tough topics well. he really likes questions and participation so if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask.
I love Dr. Mills! Definitely one of my favorite professors. His class is very straight forward and his power points and study guides give you everything you need for the tests. He cares deeply about all his students and is always willing to help students get in touch with professionals in their career path or help with internships! 10/10!!
If this class wasn't online, it would have been great. Doug is a fantastic professor and a lot of fun in his lectures, but mostly anything I learned this semester was from reading the online textbook. I did not get much out of this online format so if you are taking this class, take it with him in person. You won't be disappointed.
One of the easiest classes I have ever taken. Show up, take notes, and you'll do perfectly fine on the tests.
Professor Mills is amazing! Although attendance is not mandatory, I would recommend attending the lectures. The material itself is easy; however, the tests can sometimes be difficult because of the way he words the questions. As long as you keep up and study, you'll be fine!
Professor Mills is a wonderful person. He deeply cares for every one of his students and he takes nature walks around campus. His lectures are wonderful and he is so happy whenever someone has a question to ask during a lecture. This sweet old man made my semester.
I found this class easier than my 9th grade biology class. His lectures/slides are very easy to comprehend. He gives practice questions during class that are only shown during class, so it's key to show up. There were five exams and the homework made up 1 exam grade. The homework was kinda long sometimes but very easy to complete.
Dr. Mills was a very caring professor. There were no lectures the day of exams. There are a bit of homework assignments that aren't a lot of points, but besides that there are no other assignments other than exams (usually five).
Professor is a great teacher and is passionate about the subject. There are a couple textbook assignments due every week. There are a total of 5 exams during the semester and his lecture slides cover what's in the exams. Overall great class.
