This was doug orr's 1st semester teaching at city. He came from Spokane Washington. He is the coolest, liberal, fun to listen to econ teacher ever. His class is definately not easy but REALLY interesting. I could really reccomend taking him
Very cool teacher. Lectures are very interesting. Attendance is mandatory, because of low usage of the book. He is not an easy teacher, but if you are interested in economiks- he is the best teacher for you.
A very good teacher, well informed and engaging. I learned a lot. However, there is a lot of homework with math and graphs (on graph paper) in this class, so be prepared. You must attend every class because the exams and final content is taught through lectures in class. You also need to buy the reader but you can do without the book.
Dr. Orr's lectures were always interesting for a subject that most teachers make boring and unbearable. He lectures up to the last minute sometimes over but it's ok bcuz it's that good. HW could B difficult, but he goes over it to make sure u understand. Final was not easy either, but it's all stuff that was covered in class, no surprises.
Interesting, very helpful, energetic and excellent teacher and a nice guy. Makes economics fun and applies concepts to real world stuff. One of the best teachers I have ever had, even gave a further reading list at the end of semester for those interested-
One of the best and most interesting teacher I have had her at city. His lectures incorporate real life. He picked up for landis mid semister and out did landis who was also very good. I highly recommend his class. He grades on class parcipatation.
Doug Orr is a great teacher. I had him his 1st semester at city college fall 08 fir econ 3. He is full of energy and very interesting. He makes econ very fun compared to my econ 1 teacher Goldsmith who is pretty awful. His class is definately a challenge and the exams pretty tough but he makes it worth it and a fun semester. Highly recommend him!!!
A great teacher... knows exactly what he's talking about, and is very organized and helpful... I didn't buy the book, but attended all lectures and got an A. Really hard tests, but he explains everything extremely well in lecture.
Attendance is mandatory. It's not like you don't come, lower your grade. I mean, it does, but the more important thing, his lecture is like EVERYTHING. He's not an easy teacher, but he's well organized and everything is explained in his lecture. Come to class is crucial and the reader is important. Textbook is not well used.
A great teacher, but seems like still learning how to teach(can get lost sometimes). Nice & helpful, has passion with the subject. Attendence is mandatory, 4 tests + 1final,and homework everyday. Keeping all notes/handouts in your binder for him to check, it's helpful but kind of annoying
Orr is a great teacher, his tests were pretty easy, and his lectures were fun, and easy to follow.
This teacher is AMAZING! If you want to learn about economics, this is the BEST CCSF Econ teacher out there. I came in without any knowledge of economics and came out knowing some. I didn't really "master" everything because I am a stupid student. But still, I was surprised to get a C even though I failed all my tests and finals.. very FUN lectures
i went into econ not knowing what to expect. but he made the class very fun and interesting, on the basis that he went and found the material necessary to relate to his students. very passionate about his subject. just personally i think that's the most important trait to have as a teacher.
Terrific all around teacher, makes statistics accessible to those who have not taken it before. Allows students to use equations he derived himself that reduce the number of steps in problems. Definitely recommend. Gave great introductory talk on economic crisis, not sure if he ever still gives it.
Best lecturer I have ever had. This class should appeal to business and non-business majors alike.
Aw, Doug Orr is the best teacher ever. Super liberal, interesting, funny, engaging teacher. And I like his outfits. They're pretty good.
Amazing professor; the best I've had in any subject area here at CCSF. Fun, engaging, respectful, and interested in what his students have to say. Guaranteed A's on all homework as long as you do it; even if you get some answers wrong. This puts the balance of your grade on your exams, which he prepares you for with detailed study guides.
Best Professor at City! He's passionate about what he teaches and engages us. Each class builds on top of the previous one so don't miss class. He also write his own tests and they aren't hard if you study the study guide. The homework he gives helps you understand the material. Highly recommended!!
Dr. Orr is one of the MOST AMAZING professors I've ever met! Super accessible and willing to help. He's got a Ph.D. in economics and really knows his stuff. Teaches from the "heterodox" perspective, which to me is the logical and common sense approach. He says his Econ 1 class is "a class in self-defense". TAKE HIM!! (if you can find an opening)!!
the best professor at CCSF. I wish everyone is as enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their subjects
Amazing Professor. It's not a stretch to say that some of his lectures changed my entire perspective on life. His tests are tough and the exams are based on the lectures so attendance is mandatory. It's not an easy class but it's completely worth taking.
Attendance sheet every day, few pop quizzes, lots and lots of reading from book and reader.Lecture notes, reader assignments, and hw will all be on exams.Tough class but he can teach. You just need to be willing to absorb the load.
Can't teach. you pretty much learn on your own from the book and homework exercises. couple times saw students raise hands to ask question but he just ignored them and continued rambling.
He is awesome. You don't even need to buy the book because he tests strictly from lectures and homeworks.
He is the best economics teacher on campus. I highly recommend him to everybody who will need solid understanding of the subject for future career.
I'm really not that great in math (tested eligible to take 860), but I busted my ass in this class and I got an A. If you want it, you can get it too, just be prepared to work. Lots of homework after every class, which he grades, so you'll want to do it. Tests are straight forward and lets you bring a one sided sheet of paper with formulas. GOOD!
Took Econ1 with Prof.Orr and decided to follow him to Econ3 even it's night class in Downtown campus. He's the only teacher I met in City that I would call a "professor". He's intellectual, fun, very knowlegable in the subject, I've never enjoyed lectures this much. His lectures are extremely important cuz all test problems come from there.
He really is good at what he does, but Math has never been my thing. Some who were good at Math even found this class hard to keep up with. You have to keep a separate binder for the class with homework inside that he checks periodically. I got a bad grade. Work your ass off in this class if you take it.
I wish he were my dad. I'm serious. You could say my parents are like Anti-Orr. They do everything opposite to what Orr does. God what an asset to this community college. I mean, of all places on this earth, a human being like Dr. Orr has found his way into this area of the world and to this particular school, and he's teaching us. Just amazing.
Awesome. He also taught Women Studies previously, I wouldn't be surprised if he has multiple masters or phds. He is able to engage the class better than any teacher I've had previously. Bring the subject into clear application in our modern world, i plan to take all the classes he offers.
Dr. Orr is by far the best professor I have taken In CCSF. He does an impeccable job incorporating everyday life situations in his work, so even if you don't like Econ, you will pay attention. He takes his time to answer questions even if he is late. With his talent, he can easily teach at Stanford or Harvard. U are lucky if you can take his class.
Excellent teacher! He is very informative and interesting. Will learn alot in his class. Pay attention and take good notes, you will ace his exams. Don't miss too many classes because everyday is something new. This guy is super smart, I'm sure he could be making millions else where. Must be a passion job for him, or he is already rich.
He knows what he's talking about. He explains pretty well. He gives study guides for tests which are 4 including the final. Take notes pay attention and study you'll due pretty good. Try not to miss class cz his lectures are super important
The guy delivers a passionate, completely factless speech every day. He politicizes his class instead of teaching basic economics, gets strung out, forces you to do things like lie on an exam to get an A (ie-- explain why the nat'l debt is not only no big deal, but a good thing). Radical. Will sometimes snap. Homework every day. I got an A.
Knows how to make the most boring stuff interesting. I never got the textbook nor took any notes and still breezed through his class. The only thing that bothered me was how much I would miss when I was absent for a single day. :T
Dr. Orr is a very good professor! He is knowledgeable and helpful. His tries hard to make economic easier for students by giving good examples and by having good organized papers and lectures. He also tries his best to help his students to success. I hope someday I can do job like him - knowledgeable on the fieid and try best to help others!
Prof. Orr was great. Gives good labor view.
I really like Dr. Orr, the best professor I have ever met. Learn a lot from him, I would say i am sooooooo lucky to have Dr. Orr, such a great, knowlegable professor
GREAT INSTRUCTOR!!! He's amazing and very knowledgeable about the material and current events. He doesn't teach you just about the course material, but he teaches you about the relaistic affects the material has in our everyday lives. I highly recommend his class!!!!!!!!!
Not an easy B class. Keep up the reading and hw assignments, if not you will fall behind and no way to catch up. The class was BORING, I wouldn't stand how he was able to present the lecture everyday. I do not recommend him.
His class is pretty hard although his lecture is really interesting and funny. You need to understand the concept to get a good grade. The math/graphing was easy though.
yeah, he is very knowledgeable, but if you mess up a exam, you gonna to catch up very hard. 3 exam+finals. 15% hw.
Go to class and take notes. He will provide study guides for tests so notes will help. He explains everything great and with good,, humorous examples. He keeps things light but is no non-sense. Plan to not chat with friends or use your phone. He will call you out. You learn a lot if you want to.
Great professor! Loves teaching and very enthusiastic. Always has a lesson plan and doesn't deviate though he may take longer to cover a subject than he anticipates. Gives great examples and is quite a story teller. Love his philosophy of teaching. Knows that it is student driven and allows for mistakes on the homework.
love his class, best teacher i've ever had. wanting to learn about the real bussiness world, highly recommand. wanting an easy "Apple"? you shouldn't consider his class ever.
he's a hard working prof. indeed but he always tell his student that trying is most important i do all my assignment and come to class everyday and sit close to the front of the class and listen but didn't do well on my exam and got a "d" he did well as a prof. but not as a person he kinda backed down on his believe which is to "try" disappointed.
Dr. Orr is one of the best professors I've had while at CCSF. His lectures are awesome, and it's clear that he puts a LOT of extra time into preparing them. If you're planning to major in business, economics, or in any field that requires critical thinking, his teachings will serve you well. Engage yourself with the material and you'll do well.
He is very clear in teaching, but he uses way too many abbreviations on the board which makes it hard to understand. The class also gets kind of boring if you aren't really into economics. Do the study guide he gives and it shouldn't be a problem passing this class.
He is passionate of his work, but has a tendency to politicize topics and find opportunity to villainize right-wing politics. He needs to either learn bipartisanship or lecture apolitically, otherwise he is going to unintentionally anger students who knowingly choose to keep their Republican affiliation discreet in a community college setting.
Prof Orr uses anthropology, history, philosophy, critical thinking, and simple math to explain micro, and show how our economy functions. His epiphany-laden lectures are so well prepared and delivered, it's like performance art. Exams are lecture- and homework-based, and the h.w. is challenging, so to do well, you must attend and take good notes.
Amazing teacher! I had him in Econ 1, and went out of my way just to take his Econ 3 (the scheduled time of the class was inconvenient). Loved his approach to teaching, very engaging!! Guess what, he is funny too.
I like his lectures. All you got to do is listen and do your work. i passed this class without reading the book. Not an easy class.
Fantastic! You will feel lucky to be in his class. He has the kind of talent to turn difficult stuff into pretty easy ones. And once you learned, it is hard to remember. It has been 5 months since I finished the course, but what he said is still in my mind. I love Professor Orr!
I started this semester out thinking he was great. Very clear and knows a lot about economics. That said, I hate him. He had 3 hours a week to get his lectures done and yet still went over almost 10 minutes at the end of class. Stop talking! Economics is BORING! And another thing, he loves to give like 15 handouts every class. He must hate trees...
Doug Orr's approach of economics and politics changed my life. He is so passionate, kind, knowledgeable... His class is hard but you will learn so much. Take him !
He is the best teacher in my life. His lecture is very academic and thoughtful. He is intelligent and humorous. He love to answer questions even after class. "true and real professor!"
Dr. Orr is exactly what a college professor should be. He knows his topic thoroughly and uses his passion for the profession to engage his students. (Specially if you sit towards the front) He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Show up to class, do all the work, take great notes and you won't need to read the text. He is that good!
Highly recommend him. He would apply examples of real world to help you understand meterials. If you are active during the class, and give him a good impression, he will upgrade your grade by one letter. I learned a lot from him, and really appreciate him.
Very clear lectures, much more useful than the textbook. Loves knowledge and wants his students to win. Attend class, pay attention, do the homework; you should get a decent grade if you try. Highly recommend.
Orr was very helpful. The subject was very difficult but Orr explained things very clearly. His homeworks help you to prepare for the exams which are easy if you understand the material. A tough subject to understand but Orr was able to make me understand it quite easily! Would definitely recommend you to take this teacher!
Doug's classes literally changed my life. I have never felt more socially, politically, and mentally inspired by another professor. EVER. I'm now at SF State, and still consider him the most valuable resource I've had as a student. Wish he could teach forever :(
Even though I failed this class (I couldn't handle the coursework), Professor Orr is very knowledgeable. If you have no interest in economics, chances are, he will spark interest before the end. Be ready to study a lot and don't miss a class, you'll regret it like I did.
Dr. Orr is one of the best teachers at CCSF. I took both of his econ classes and I learned a lot. He is very knowledgeable. There is homework and a lot of reading, but it helps extremely on the tests. Do not miss class because they are fun and the stuff will be on the test. You can always go to his office to ask for help.
Dr. Orr is literally one of CCSF's most inspiring professors. He is incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about what economics (and the many different aspects that arises: poverty & discrimination), highly knowledgeable, and will CHALLENGE you to think twice about the world. Truly inspired by Dr. Orr. Love these courses and highly recommend!
Professor Orr is one of CCSF's best professors. His lectures are super clear and he makes them interesting and relatable to current times. He is very intelligent and grades fairly. It's great to see how enthusiastic he is about teaching.
Professor Orr blew me away with his historical accounts and personal stories related to economics. My eyes welled up with tears a couple times and I have never seen a class so captivated by what the teacher was saying. He made me a lot more interested in economics. He's passionate about the subject and City College is very lucky to have him.
Prof. Orr teaching style goes beyond theoretical abstractions, which usually constitutes a economics class. Orr uses economics to illustrate the impact it has on your life. You will learn about the historical progression of economics, spanning from the time of the Romans to the present. Its a must take.
Dr. Orr is one of the best professors at CCSF. His lectures are clear. He also provides helpful study guides before the exam. In addition, he is funny, which makes his class that much better.
Not for the faint of heart, he clearly expects everyone to act like legit college students. Reading the book and his reader is definitely necessary. INSPIRATIONAL and PASSIONATE SPEAKER! It's easy to get super fired up about how our current economy works through his lectures. If you're in it to really learn something, I HIGHLY recommend him!
In this class you cannot just try, you have to try really HARD. He don't care if you complete all your work, you have to pass almost all your test, or most of it. He makes it sound like it is easy to pass his class, but it is not , for sure.
Doug Orr has sparked my passion for economics and has taught me how the real world works. I recommend to everyone. Exams are challenging, gives you a clear cut study guide a week in advance. READ the course reader book that is assigned. Homework you get full credit for trying which is a good chunk of your grade. All Econ teachers use his handouts..
Doug Orr has to be one of the best professors of economics I have taken. Not only that, he is one of the best professors at city college. I have no regrets and would take him again in a heart beat.
Agree with the other posters - he provides you with a well-rounded economics education. You will learn the quantitative skills to DO economics. You will also learn the history of the ideas in mainstream economics. A very competent instructor who takes the steps involved in the learning process seriously. Learn how the world works, take his class!
Dr. Orr is the best! I enjoy his lecture so much that I don't even know time goes by when having the class. He is knowledgeable and organized. One thing I really like is that he will tell you how a theory came into existence and use everyday examples to explain it. He makes things logical and easy. I am his Big Fan! Three exams plus final.
Seemed intimidating at the beginning of the semester, but turns out to be a great professor! Lectures are not boring at all; he demonstrates theories in class to help better understand the lecture. As for the exams, most of it is what he goes over in his lectures, and some of it from the assigned reader. Overall amazing experience.
You have to go to the classes. He makes it a point that you have to pay attention and come or you won't pass. He enjoys answering people's questions, and curves the grade. Homework is 'extra credit', only helps your grade, can never ruin it. You need to do the extra readings as well. You get what you put into the class.
Fantastic teacher, his lectures are very inspiring and it doesn't even feel like a class. Feels more like story time lol. You wouldn't skip his class due to the fact that you'll like it so much :)
He is a good teacher but his class is really really hard. You need to study a lot and go to class. His test is really hard too but he give good study guide. All in all, this is a really hard class you need to spent 2X time than the other class. Good luck
Professor Orr's lectures are the best lectures that I have ever had! He explains everything clearly, and he makes everyone interested in the subject. I LOVED his macroecon class, and his lectures are AMAZING. His tests are really hard though, but if you do all the homework, attend class, and study his reader, you'll probably get an A. Recommended!
One of the best professors I have had at CCSF. His lectures were very interesting and kept you engaged throughout the entire semester. It was amazing how fast an hour would fly while in his classes. Take good notes and even a voice recorder is a good idea. 75% of his tests are from lecture with the remaining questions from book/reader.
One of the best instructors I have ever met! Need to participate in his class and a lot to remember for tests, ask questions/ take notes in the class will help a lot and Orr is very patient. Though, he tend to use difficult terms in the tests; the reader and homework will be very important sources for test.
I would say he is the one of my favourite professors in CCSF, and I assure you he is one of the best professor in CCSF. Explain very clear with lot of examples, enjoy discussing with student, very easy going I wonder where did he go in this fall 2016?
I took Dr. Orr's ECON 1+3+5 in 2009. Eleven years later I still remember how awesome his lectures was, so I'm coming back to say thank you professor. Dr. Orr explained concepts crystal clear and kept his classes fun and engaging. I always couldn't get enough of his teaching and didn't want classes to end. The best kind of professor you will meet!
I graduated from CCSF in 2011 and transferred to Stanford. It's thanksgiving day (2021) today and I'm coming here to give thanks -- to Doug Orr. Doug was one of the most influential people in my educational career and is an incredible professor. I would go to his office hours just to hang out and learn more -- he is a one-of-a-kind type of prof.
