Teacher was very difficult, it seemed like the tests/quizzes covered material we never worked on. dont get me wrong this is intermediate algebra, i took calculus just before it, and i struggled with this. Its his first year teaching maybe thats why, but dont take him!!

I was completely miserable in his class. His examples were very difficult to understand. His quizzes and tests were not even remotely resembling what he has lectured in class. Very condescending when you come to his office to ask for help and made you feel even more stupid.
If you get past his quirkiness he is an excellent teacher. I did not find it hard to keep up with him and if anyone had questions he didn't have a problem going over them. Homework is in preparation for quizzes and test, so if you stay on top of it you should do well.
His degree is in Physics. He's very smart, however, his ability to convey new math concepts is lacking. He teaches as if the students are all at his level of math. Nice guy, but DO NOT fall behind.
He is a good teacher and very fair on grades.
Owen really knows what he is talking about, and convays this knowledge with the class perfectly.
Doug is good to go, a great guy who keeps it light and moving along in the class. He is fair with grades. He can skip over simple explanations assuming that you are better informed. I would take more math from him.
The way he teaches it's easy to follow, BUT the quizes are a lot harder than class material or homework from the book SO I don't get it. I thought he should be quizing us from what he teaches or something that resembles the homework.
I took his Math 90 class, and I think he's a good teacher. In that class, he gave homework everyday, and he collected them every Tuesday. He's very helpful when it comes to explaining. If you need help, you can always come to his office.
Do not take this class with this teacher. He does not communicate well. He is only interested in teaching to the kids who already know the subject. Acts like a victim cause he's only part time. No office hours.
he explains the easy thing in the class and leave the hard things for students to get. He is really not helpfull , if you want to ask abt HW qusetion you need to go to his office ( because he doesn't have the time to explaine it in the class )knowing that his office our for the class is just 20 minutes.
my advice is to avoid taking him with this class. you will never get the chance to ask him about HW question in the class, his office hour is really short. and he will be busy with other stuff than teaching you in the office hour. His quizzes and exams are soo hard ( other meterials than he teaches in the class.
It seems like he doesn't even care about teaching you about the hard part of the book. He leaves the hard part to you, so you have to figure it out by yourself. His quizzes and tests doesn't even make sense. The quizzes and tests don't even relate to his lectures nor the book!
attendance isn't required by him but it is EXTREMELY helpful because he explains how to do all the formulas and problems that will be on the tests. He give extra credit options which allowed me to get a 4.0! Some of the other students found him to be difficult but I think if you show up to class and study the material you will do fine!
His office hour is by appointment, which means that it?s likely that you won?t reach him by phone, and he doesn't seem to respond to emails. His lectures are just a fly by of the concepts, to pass his quizzes or to understand the course you have to read the text and do the problems. Lastly, there's no make up exams or quizzes if you missed them.
He is a good, interesting teacher!
.....He is so cute....I really like him....^^
The exams and quizzes fall COMPLETELY outside the range of what he teaches. It's as if he's trying to make you fail. I thought it was just me, but reading all these comments was validating. Plus, he's not real friendly.
A straightforward teacher. His tests and quizzes shouldn't be easy if you paid attention. He answers questions you need help with and makes up examples if needed. If he makes a mistake and you catch it, it's free points for the class and EC for you. Overall, a nice guy who tries to be entertaining and fair.
I found his lectures really good and easy to understand. He is not easy and requires us to do hw, but it is good for us. He was a little fast in explaining, but I got it, and you must get it too: I am an international student, so my listening skill is not so good. It is true that he has little office hrs, but he replies to email so soon.
THe lectures were straightforward and easy to follow and very well thought out. Quizzes = hard, Exams = medium, but fair as owen would give good examples in class. Makes you learn a lot without graphing calculator which seems helpful if you plan to do more math. Would like to take mroe classes from him, I learned a lot.
Taking notes in class really helped and completing homework is a must, but he is a very intelligant teacher who knows what he is talking about. I had him for Math 90 too. A quiz or exam is given every week(usually Thursdays) and homework is collected every Tuesday. You barely use graphing calculators in his class.
a very nice professor, gives clear instructions and home work assignments. if you want to learn Math at this level, he has the best way to get you there.
Nice, funny guy but he the tests and quizes are always a surprise to me. he put on stuff we never went over. i got a 4.0 in math80 and am not doing so well in 90 . lectures are good but his tests and quizes are difficult and doesnt offer extra credit or other opportunities
He seems like a good teacher so far, his quizzes are not too hard,if you do the homework you shouldn't have too hard of a time with them. He seems to know what he is talking about. So far he is my favorite math teacher at EDCC and I have gone through quite a few of them.
take him! he gives extra credits on quizzes, tests and exams and he is not strict at all. His lectures are not boring and he is so cute :)
Doug is a super smart math teacher who really helped me get a better understanding of Calculus, but his tests and quizzes are HARD. He expects that you have your prereq's down solid. My major gripe is that he went outside the scope of the class a bit too much on some of the tests/quizzes.
Very good teacher, I liked how he used his lectures to make sure everyone had fun while learning math.
Great math teacher! I had him for 141/142 One of the best I've had in my life. He is very thorough. Puts emphasis on deriving formulas. This leads to great understanding of the topic. No calculators on quizzes or exams. You can use it on the final, though. Lots of quizzes, but he drops quite a few of the lower one. I would definitely reccomend him.
I'm not a math person at all, but you can do well as long as you do homework daily M-F : they are key to studying for quizzes and exams. If I study hard, I get A's on quizzes and B+ on exams. Owen is always willing to help. His lectures are sometimes too fast for me, but he's always willing to back up and clarify.
He is really friendly instructor. Actually he is really cute!!XDhaha JK.His class is easy but his quizzes and exams are quite harder than during class. You have to study very hard whatever you take for class. I think he is a good, fun, kind, and friendly person.I confidently recommend his class!!
one of the best teachers i have ever had. as long as you pay attention every class and do all the homework than you will probably get an A. I recommend him to anyone taking a math class.
He is an awesome teacher! It was difficult to catch up b/c he doesn't allow graphing calc on tests but b/c of this I have learned so much more. If I ever get the opportunity to take a class with him again I definately will!
Professor Owens is an awesome teacher. Show up to his lectures, follow along with the examples, and LISTEN intently. If you show up and actually try in class you can get A's on every quiz and test by only doing a little bit of homework for review after his lecture. I personally didn't do much of the homework and got a 4.0 by listening.
He is really helpful. If we attend class and do homework 100%, we can resubmit 1 quiz.
Consistently assigns material before lecturing on it or material that will not be lectured upon. Covers material at an alarming pace and is difficult to follow. Tends to skip several algebraic steps at a time, perhaps assuming that his students also do math for a living. I would not recommend.
He's a great person but a horrible professor. He treats everyone and teaches as if students use math everyday for a living!Wouldn't recomend him!!!
Makes youtube solution videos for nearly every quiz and every test, which are extremely helpful. Hands out an anonymous unofficial teacher evaluation form halfway through the quarter so that he can adjust to feedback. Early to class every day to answer questions and teaches to the very end. Energetic; tests and quizzes are creative.Quality teacher
Well all I can say is this teacher is super cute, nice and funny - aside from that, I wouldn't recommend taking a class with him unless you know your stuff. I sure was not expecting to be left completely to my own resources when learning the subject! Lectures often have nothing to do with the material and he likes to stray off topic.
He is a nice guy, but treats the class as if everyone knows what hes talking about. Homework is due AFTER quizzes which makes no sense, and doesn't really clarify what exactly will be on quizzes. Its kind of like a "self learn" class. Hes a great guy but not a good teacher, i wouldn't recommend him at all.
This guy should not be teaching math at a community college... He is way too smart at math, and also a very good teacher.
I didn't care for his lectures because it was straight from the book in which I believe some things could had been explained much simpler. However, I really liked his YOUTUBE videos, going over tests and doing math labs.
He was usually very thorough about explaining steps during lectures, had great resource online. But when it came to tests, I felt like I might as well not have been in class. He is a great teacher but don't recommend class during summer quarter or if are not taking consecutive math classes back to back.
This guy is an awesome teacher. One of the best math teachers I ever had. He is not easy by any means he is going to challenge you. He puts out videos every week on answers to the quizzes. He doesn't try to trick you or anything. If you come to class and do the homework you should be fine. Good Luck :)
Nice teacher but teaches fast. He assigns lots of homework and quizzes every week. But if u do it all, u will be fine.
Alright teacher. He challenges you, test and quizzes are very hard and more often than not you will find questions you have never seen before on them. I would not recommend him.
class was mostly a race through the textbook. instructor was good, but some test questions were not similar to homework assignments - and that was very unfair.
Very unhelpful, lots of self study and videos from the other Calculus instructor are mandatory.
His quiz can be hard but the test is simply easier than the quiz. If you do all of the homework, you will do good in this class.
Nice teacher , but I really don't recommend taking his class. His lectures are from the book only & very fast and short. A lot of exercise and quiz every week. Not easy exam.if u need a good grade he isn't the rite choice. If one person understand it he will move on. U need to do all the work your self. Not a good teacher for a freshman student.
This was the only 142 class offered over the summer. Teacher was impatient, sometimes rude, and always very rushed. He doesn't believe in graphing calculators, so you'll have to buy a scientific. Worst thing is homework policy. He assigns insane amounts, and only collects 1 bit per week. God help you if that's the part you didn't do.
Too much homework and hard quizzes/exams. Cannot use graphing calculators either. He seems really nice as a person but I wouldn't recommend him as a teacher. One of the hardest teachers I have taken. If you work REALLY HARD you can still do great, but be prepared to get tutoring or watch videos to help clarify concepts.
This teacher is ridiculously difficult. His workload is equivalent to 15 credits. He makes math unnecessarily hard.
Quizzes are hard and exams are easy. I started out rough and failed many quizzes but his grading scheme allows for mistakes but still possible for 4.0. He goes pretty fast but will explain something until you feel comfortable. It was a difficult class but just put in effort to stay on top of the current material and getting a 4.0 is possible.
Don't recommend for summer quarter. Often I don't understand what is he saying. Watch online video or read the text beforehand are better.
A really hard teacher. Took his class during summer quarter and ended up withdrawing. Teaches really fast and gives insane workloads. Gives you so much stress, I don't recommend this teacher at all.
teaches really fast but clear, exams and quizzes really easy
Would recommend take him for M90. 141. 142 but that's all
I would not recommend this instructor to anyone. He obviously knows the subject, he just doesn't take the time to teach. He is not SSD-friendly.
The class was a lot of work! Quizzes were pretty hard and theres a lot of homework to do. Professor Owen is very good at explaining calculus and is always eagerly answering peoples questions. He makes the math fun too. Has high expectations but is a fair grader and drops your low test. I recommend him if you really want to learn this stuff!
Owen is hard but knows his math. The class has a lot of homework but does not make you use webassign. Tests can be tricky if you dont study but he gives good practice exams and the videos are super helpful.
Teacher provides homework that is not relevant to the tests he gives (and a lot of it too). He clearly knows the material but is terrible at delivering it. To understand you have to watch a DIFFERENT professors Youtube videos for explanation. I wouldn't recommend this professor to my worst enemy. Absolutely horrible.
Horrible teacher, I do not recommend him to anyone. I took the class because I was going for engineering and my views of math changed after taking his class. He teaches the really simple problems in class and when get to the hard problems on your hw, you have no clue what to do. his test are nothing similar to his homework and are extremely hard.
He really knows his stuff and is incredibly passionate about math. His lectures are very detailed and easy to understand. He's always happy to help you out if you need it. He's also a very fun guy. Second-chances are always available. Overall, great teacher, would take again in the future.
Explains every problem really good
His lectures are great, very easy to follow. You will definitely learn a lot from his classes
gives a lot of homework
Not really clear but gives good grades
Had Owen for the precalc2. Lectures were thorough and explained things in a very clear way, and also explained why we need to know so many trig formulas. Quizzes were hard, but helped a lot on the tests. Collects paper hw. Grades fair with good partial credit and drops some lowest scores. Great instructor! Take him if you want to learn math!
Ton of hw graded every week. Only allows graphing calc on 3 test and final, scientific allowed. Tough, focuses on concepts, not as much on applying them. Quizzes every week and really hard. Very gracious grading policy, wants to give people a good grade. Either keep 510ish quizzes and drop one exam, or keep all exams. Final is 50% of grade!
Really good teacher, lectures very clear and homework really helps for tests and quizzes. Problems are really intuitive, not so mechanical as your common teacher.
Precalculus was not an easy class, but his lectures were very clear and helpful and he went out of his way to make sure you got it. Weekly quiz can be pretty hard, but gets you ready for exams. Also gives out his old exams and some videos which were helpful. This class changed the way I think about math, and I am on my way to a 4.0 in calc now.
He is great. Less homework, quiz every week but it's easy. I love his class. He is kind of handsome 3
Great teacher. Teaches well.
His quizzes are hard but if you listen you will be able to do his quiz well.
Owens DiffEQ class was the bomb. He shares his lecture notes online so no expensive book to buy. He is an expert on the subject, and patiently answers all questions and explain things very clearly. Quizzes are challenging but doable, tests are not bad. Very fair with partial credit + drops lowest test. HW is mandatory, but actually kinda fun.
Horrible teacher. He explains all the easy stuff in class, then assigns the hardest homework possible. The quizzes/exams are filled with the hardest questions possible. To add insult to injury, he's horrible with communication. I would not recommend him.
I liked him because he seems to try to make you understand the WHYs, whereas with some other professors, they tell you the HOWs, but in the end, you only know how to solve problems and don't know why it works. He does a lot of proofs (which aren't on the tests). Did group quizzes too. Must do Homework.
Tons of homework, but he doesn't grade most of them. His knowledge of math is amazing so if you take his class seriously, you will be so good at that subject. You have to do homework physically because he doesn't like WebAssign. I kinda like him after all. He loves math.
Doug is the best Math instructor I know! He loves math, knows how to teach and he is very smart. I left Edmonds now and I'm a math major , however I can tell you that he teaches better that the Doctor instructors I have at universities. If you want to know math, take his class. And Doug if you see this, please know you are the best!!!!
Please don't take his class I am warning you! His class is THE worst class I have ever taken in my life. I never comment on this website, but I feel like it my duty to warn you, like I wish someone would have warned me. This class was super awkward and I kinda felt uncomfortable lol. No study guide for exams, impossible questions, just dont do it.
Attended Calc I and diffyQ from him. He really strives for you to understand WHY the equations work and why you are doing them. His class is a lot of work and you will have to work for your grade but it is entirely possible to get a 3.5-4.0 if you put forth the effort. Make sure you do the homework and understand the process. Copying wont help you.
Cool guy! Will take his class again. each week he assigns chapter HWs, and collects and grades one randomly on Tuesdays. Quizzes are not harder than textbook problems, in fact their most of the times easier. His lectures are great don't skip them. Final exam is 125 pts in class and 75 pts take home aka group work. take home part is challenging.
Horrible teacher. He assigns the most homework out of any teacher I've ever had and is hugely discouraging. There is literally no way to pass his class unless its the only class you are taking. Do NOT take his class.
Very easy class. He drops lot of things. Lectures are very clear and understandable, if it's not clear ask for help and he'll reteach it in a different way. Gave out a few extra credits. The first week he gave out a lot of homework since it's review but the next week or two it calms down. Makes awkward jokes but are pretty funny.
He knows a lot about math, but he was a terrible, terrible teacher. He would constantly skip steps which made it a lot harder than it should have been. Also definitely get the textbook because I can almost guarantee that it will help you way more than he could.
I hated him. He gives way too much homework. He gave me a take home Quiz and I know for a fact I got 100% on it but he failed me because he didn't like me. His lectures are super boring and he doesn't explain anything. Don't ever take him, he's super hard and boring and awkward. His tests are hard and barely gives you any time to take them.
He assigns a lot of homework, but if you actually do it, you get a really strong understanding of the material. He really knows his stuff.
Lots and lots and lots and lots of homework and it's all handwritten. Well, yeah. Take him if you like homeworks though.
His quiz and test are far harder than homework and in-class practices. His teaching is boring, sounds like reading a script which makes me sleepy. His material is terrible, you can only learn some basic things from it, those usually won't show off on test and quiz. Think twice before you take this class.
Doug Owen is a very caring teacher. If you don't understand his lectures or homework you can go to his office hours and he would be very happy to help. The homework wasn't fun at all but it became a helpful practice for the quiz every Friday. What I like most about him is his awesome dropping policy.
Great teacher and brilliant mathematician. Homework can be incredibly hard and once you start doing mass/spring problems pretty much no one knows how to do them.( They aren't the easy ones from Physics 221) Generous grading policy and lower standards than other teachers. 90 percent is a 4.0 Highly recommend office hours.
Doug is a wonderful teacher. He is enthusiastic and the energy he brings to class is great. He tries to make things less complicated. He gives a lot of homework and it's hard to keep up though. I would suggest his class.
A brilliant mathematician, one of the smartest at EdCC. Hardest thing about his class was arguably the homework, but it helps a lot for the quizzes and exams. Exams are not overwhelmingly hard, but he gives extra credit on them so it's possible to get over a 100 percent. I would recommend if you've got a light courseload.
Pay attention during his lectures and do the homework on your own and I'm pretty sure you'll pass with a decent grade.
Dont waste your time with this teacher. Hes awkward, hes boring, his jokes are stupid. Gives examples of easy problems in class, gives hardest possible questions on the exam. His hand-written homework is a very stupid... theres is way too much of it, and its hard to learn from it. There are way better teachers out there.
He's a traditional smart, out of norm math teacher. Using lots of mental picture & imagination. doesn't follow steps but quick logical reasoning approach to problem. average students wouldn't able to catch up his lecture but smart "ones" would appreciate his "out of textbook" approach. Lots of handwriten HW but pick out only 1 4 grading.
I enjoyed taking Pre-calc II with this teacher because he's really good at explaining things, and obviously, he's super smart!
He is good at explaining problems. A very fair grader. If you follow everything in class you will do well on the tests and quizzes. The class is very well structured and allows you to get ahead. There is a lot of ho,work, but if you do it on time you will do well on the tests and leave with a very thorough understanding of the course material.
Doug is a nice teacher and he is a fair grader. He gives extra credits in quizzes. He gives a lot of homework but those are useful as a practice for quizzes and exams, but he only grades one section randomly.
Doug obviously cares about his students and want them to succeed. I took his class on summer so it's definitely hard learn everything within only 8 weeks but Doug still tried to make sure we understand the current topic before moving on to the next. He gives A LOT of homework (1 section/day) but it's very useful for practice. Very recommended!
Doug is one of the best teachers Ive ever had. I was in his linear algebra class, and the material is a bit challenging by nature. However, he does a great job breaking down concepts, and answers questions in depth. He is also happy to explain anything you ask during office hours. His exams are thorough, but very very fair he doesnt just making
If you are considering to transfer to a four-year university. Skip Doug Owen's class because simply you are risking yourself to lower your overall GPA by taking his class.
Owen is the best professor I've ever had! He instills the passion he has for his subject in his students, he does not talk down to his students, and his lectures do not cut corners. If you're truly seeking to master the subject and begin actually liking math, I would recommend his class! Other things: ungraded attendance, pen and paper homework.
very tough grader, small mistakes take lots of points off
2nd best mathematics professor at EDCC; after Eldridge. Knows the material inside and out, and as a result if you know your stuff, then his exams make sense and are almost easy. However, if you haven't done the work or do not grasp the underlying concepts, then Doug's exams can cofound you and make you feel as if He is tricking you.
OMGGG homwork is horrible
Do your homework, if you fall behind, there's no coming back. Very strict on due dates, will not accept makeup exams or homework even if you're sick.
- Calculus is a subject that requires lots of practice. This instructor knows it and encourages it. So why not working on the homework he assigns and acing the class? - He is generous about the minor mistakes, yet his exam makes you think much deeper than just remembering the equation. But in turn, the exam is short.
It is ridiculous on the amount of homework Doug puts in during this pandemic. On the first week, he gave us a 20 minute quiz +10 to turn it in. An hour at least would give us enough time to recall what we have learned. A test of speed isn't the way to quiz somebody. I know it is his first time, but he should really consider students' situations.
This is my second class with Doug after taking Calc 2. As others mention, he assigns a lot of homework, but if you do it all you will develop a solid understanding of the material. With a little prodding it is clear that he has passion for the material. He is relatable and approachable. Very much enjoyed.
This was online, so I never met the instructor in person and attendance was not taken. Replies to emails were always prompt and helpful. Stats is a hard subject but the way it is taught by videos was good, and the homework quizzes and tests were not bad, even kind of easy. I would take him again, although this was my last math class.
This was during covid and was using statlab and videos so no daily attendance and you can work ahead to finish early. Grades come from homework, quiz and tests. the videos were very helpful for all of the material. Make sure t do the practice tests as they helped for the tests. The course was good and easy to get a good grade in online.
There were two big tests in the class. We had practices for each test (every test question comes from the practice so you know what to study). There is no extra credit, but you get three attempts on each QUIZ. Make sure you work ahead because there is lots of homework. You can easily get an A, but put in the work.
Owen is my favorite math teacher, I took his 153 and 272 and will continue to take his 271/254. his classes are easy, the lectures are clear and the homework is not mandatory, you only need to turn in 2 or 3 problems a week. Owen is very lenient with the deductions, he will also assign extra points on a test.
Linear Algebra is a subject that requires a heavy understanding of concepts, and Owen certainly emphasizes that throughout the quarter. The exams and final are clear and never too difficult, though it challenges you to think deeper than just simply remembering the calculations. An A is certainly possible, but put in the work and study diligently.
Not the professor to take if you're a busy student with a life. Fast-paced, and not that difficult. He gives no extensions, assigns homework for days in a row (not joking when I tell you he assigned HW for 8 days in a row) but will expect you to work ahead using the excuse "if I extend this deadline for you, I have to do it for everyone else too."
This class was very fast paced, with not much time to actually think lmao. you hear it once and then onto the next objective. The professor is super nice and understanding. class was hybrid and structured where inperson lectures aren't very helpful so I found the ones on CANVAS helped. There are 3 midterms and 1 final which are 50% of your grade):
Doug Owen is an awesome guy. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His lectures are clear and if you study by yourself you will succeed in his class. Would take his class again no doubt.
Doug is one of the best math professors I have ever had, his exams might seem hard as he writes, but once you understand the concept, his exams are straightforward. He wants his students to not memorize the way to solve problems but to understand the logic behind it.
MATH146 is a fast-paced course, but the professor is understanding. Lectures on Canvas were more helpful than in-person. Midterms and a final make up 50% of the grade. Unstuck ai and practice tests were essential for exam prep.
Another confusing & and disorganized teacher. Can't believe they let him teach.
