Excellant teacher!!! Challenging, inventive and good with young adults.

Sometimes movestoo quickly, but otherwise is a fine teacher.

Quinlan is great! He teaches really simply and easily. He seemed to be a bit less comfortable with the 131 material, and I felt a little unprepared in 200, but he was great to work with. And the best part...open notes and book on all tests!!
Mr. Quinlan makes every effort to make sure his students understand the class material. He can and does explain basic theory and methods in terms that anyone can understand. Grading is very fair, if you show up to class and actually do the homework, a good grade is very attainable.
Very helpful if you don't understand something. He tends to be a bit scattered when it comes to his materials but he eventually gets it together. Overall a good teacher and a fun class.
I love Mr. Quinlan! He's such teaches so clearly, and is really fun.
he is the best math teacher i have ever heard or been taught by!!
He is such an AWESOME teacher!

Great teacher, he has great teaching methods and open note tests!
requires attendance, poor scheduling, quizes are hard for people still learning material--he might as well just collect homework. he's a nice guy, and fun... but some might think he's aggressive and a bully. i suggest most people, who don't like to be pushed or dragged around, take a class that allows the student to decide how much work they need!
Great Teacher if you already know the material. He tends to teach math like its supposed to be just a review for you.His quizzes are hard and tricky so if you are a beginner I suggest getting a easier teacher that doesn`t seem to rush through the math like it's a review for everybody.
Mr. Quinlan is a great math teacher. By far the best math teacher I've had at WCC. All you need to do is come to class and do the work. The tests are pretty much taken from the quizzes and he even lets you use your notes on the quizzes if need be. I wish he were teaching my current math class.
Mr. Quinlan is a great math professor! He can move through material a little fast sometimes but he will go over it again if you ask. His quizzes and tests are easy because he gives you a chance to make corrections before you get a final grade!
Mr. Quinlan is an amazing math instructor!!!! He is so helpful and clear! He gives quizzes frequently, but it keeps you on top of what you need to work on. Does not grade homework, but you should do it! Very friendly and easy to talk to-willing to help with questions. recommend him to anyone. I do not like math, but with him it was the best!!!
Great guy, very easy to ask questions, very helpful and he keeps the mood about as good as it gets when it comes to math. Gives little quizzes often but it helps to show you where you need to improve before a big test.
Fun and strait forward, flexible
Quinlan is a good instructor. He will help you if you don't understand you just have to ask. Do the homework, its not graded but you will have weekly quizzes over the material. Tests were a bit tricky from the examples in class but easy enough if you know the material.
He was very good. Very helpful and personable! He is a must for those of you who don't know who to take!
I really struggled in his class, and I have never had trouble in math before. His teaching style just did not work for me. He goes over things quickly and doesn't really explain. He skips chapters in the book, and puts things on the tests that he's never shown you how to do "to make you think".
Quinlan is awesome! He explained everything very well. He is very easy going and very helpful. I have always dreaded going into a math class, but I actually enjoy going to Quinlan's class.
Great teacher. I'd recommend him to anyone that struggles with math.
Quinland is a good teacher. He is clear and articulate. He gives quizzes liberally! DO NOT MISS CLASS! You will probably miss a quiz! He assigns homework but does not take grade it. Usually he gives quizzes on the homework from the night before. Tests are from quizzes. If you do not know the material you will not be able to finish the quiz in time.
Good teacher, lots of quizzes but they are helpful. i would reccomend him.
Good teacher. Class pretty easy, especially coming from someone who HATES math. Might vary from quarter to quarter but we had nightly quizes and all tests were open book and note.
This class wasn't too challenging, but yet made you think. As long as homework is done and you understand what's going on its easy! I highly recommend this class, as I am someone who gets easily frustrated with math. Open note tests too was an upside!
Very good teacher BUT does nit give partial credit.
He's not the best teacher. He would help if you needed help but overall he isn't the best. He would have us work in groups to try to figure things out. Come on, he's the teacher, he is supposed to teach.. Which he barely does.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. His class is very hard, as he doesn't give partial credit and you really need to know your stuff. But he's there to teach you if you give him a chance he will make you a much better student.
He is a fantastic math teacher. I strongly recommend him to anyone who struggles in math. He is a fun guy who understands that people have a difficult time in math, which is always helpful. A few quizzes a week but all based off of homework. As long as you do the homework, quizzes are not hard. Just the right amount of homework assigned.
This is by far the best teacher i have ever had. I loved his class so much, that there were many days i went to school just to go to math! He is very helpful, encouraging, funny, and will make you love math! There were many things that i knew how to do already, but he made it so i understand an appreciate math so much more! Take him, hes the best!
Mr. Quinlan is such a great teacher. I went onto math 98 and 99 totally dreading it, but he made it so clear and easy to understand. He does give daily quizes and pretty hard tests, but it's to push you to the extent of your knowledge he knows you have. He's very funny, caring, and just nice all around. best teacher ever!
Quinlan is a fantastic teacher. Really funny, and has great relationships with his students. His class isn't easy though. Do the homework because there's always a quiz. Not a class for slackers. But, I got a C on the first exam, and ended up with an A in the class. I'd reccomend his class to anyone.
I am shocked at all the positive reviews here; they do not match my experience! When I was taking this class he mocked us when we couldn't come up with the right answer and pretended not to see us when we raised our hands and was overall obnoxious and rude. I would not recommend this teacher.
This instructor was very non personal with his students, and very rude to those who spoke up requesting clarity on a problem, he made fun of them and embarrased them. When asking for help he turned me away, pointed to the part of my notes with the type of problem and expected me to teach myself. Is an overall very rude, un-helpful instructor.
Great teacher, very fair! If you are straight out of high school, and are wanting to be spoon fed, take someone else. If you are ready to conduct yourself in an adult manor, and put in some effort, Mr. Quinlan's your guy. He gives plenty of opportunity to better your grade.
You can tell Mr. Quinlan used to coach, as this is the style he uses to teach as well. He made me believe in my abilities. However, he seems to ignore older students. Had to fight to have my questions answered. He is upbeat and this makes class fun. Pay attention, and be ready to do the work, and you will do well.
pretty easy really
AMAZING TEACHER. BEST MATH TEACHER EVER HAD. CRYSTAL CLEAR EXPLANIATIONS. CAN TELL IF YOUR CONFUSED AND WONT MOVE ON UNTIL YOU TOTALLY UNDERSTAND.
Out of high school and college this has been my favorite teacher. I give him a hard time because i wish that he teached all the classes i need to take. He was very helpful to me and made math fun. Without a doubt i would recommended him. To this day, when i have a hard time in math, even though i am not in his class, i go to him for help. TAKE HIM
Gave 15 pop quizzes; dropped 4 lowest scores. The quizzes really show you whether you're understnading the material or not. Homework is optional. Lots of xtra credit opportunity. This was my first A in a math class since at least 7th grade(consumer math doesn't count).
Quinlan is one of the greatest math teachers i have had.He is organized, nice, helpfull and reasonable. Recommend him to anyone.
Such a great teacher! Went over everything with clarity, was very fair on all quizzes and tests, take his class!!
Doug is a really quality math teacher. He is clear and direct, as well as funny and a genuinely cool guy. These are not easy classes though, and you do need to do the homework and understand the material. You get to have your notes and book for the tests, which is a godsend.
Quinlan has the tendency 2 speed up the discussion. Though the tests are open notes/book, he RARELY writes on the board. He also has the tendency 2 skip the process on how 2 solve certain math problems. He expects that you already know. He also discourage people 2 seek help @ the Math Center. His teaching methods not for everyone. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is rude to students that need help and ask questions. He also doesn't write the steps on the board.
He reviews alg the first couple of days- helpful if you're rusty. He's very approachable. He's fair & reasonable, and makes it easy to do well, if you study. Caution: do not rely solely on open notes- study!! Go to class- worth MUCH more than the book. Do not be afraid to ask questions. He teases sometimes, but it's b/c he has a sense of humor. A+!
Really helpful, made you like coming to class and was one funny man. Didnt study for one test and ended with a B+. I just wish he was going to teach 142.
NOT A PLEASURE TO HAVE IN CLASS AT ALL! He was not clear in teaching. Very confusing! I am very disappointed. I wish he was more engaging in teaching, but he wasn't He was lazy too. I do not recommend him.
Best teacher i've ever had.. People who are hating on him i'm sure didn't go to class. He will answer any question and is such a cool guy. He made me love math again i HIGHLY recommend him to anyone.
By far the best math teacher, or overall best teacher I ever had. I absolutely love him to death considering he always helped everyone. he gave me a hard time sometimes pushing me to strive for better. honestly he made me like math. I recommend him to anyone, he's the absolute best. :)
The best Math teacher!!! He is soooo cool, smart and witty. The whole class was always happy because of him. His test are hard, but fair. He explains very clearly and is willing to help you if you don't get it. Very patient. I wish he taught more math courses then he does!
Ohkay first of all I want to say I have had a lot of math teachers but Quinlan is the first to actually care about his students improvement. I enjoy his lectures and he honestly makes it easier to connect with the confusing parts of pre-calc. I highly recommend him as a teacher!Anyone who talks down about him probably didn't try; he always helps!(:
MY MAN DOUG. He's probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. So fun! I used to hate math and struggle with it before I got him as a teacher, but that has all changed! He is always willing to help you, even after class. Study your notes and come to class, you'll get an A! I recommend taking him 100%, he's really helped me improve as a student!
I am the worst at math and Doug has made math understandable and almost enjoyable. He is very patient and helps people over and over again even on the simplest problems. He shows you lots of tricks that make math way easier on the brain.
The material was challenging, but Doug is a great professor. Probably one of my favorite teachers I've had at WCC; he cares about you and wants you to succeed but he also challenges you to see the bigger picture--that it's not all about the grade or this class.
Best teacher in the universe
Was superb at teaching in a way that we could connect. He tried to keep examples modern to things we all could relate to. Absolutely will take his class in the future.
The MOST AMAZING TEACHER EVER! I've taken 3 times with him,and never seen him rude, angry, or unpleasant. He always has a kind word to say, encourages, laughs, jokes, and makes his class so much fun.He kept the atmosphere of the class happy and helpful, and totally stress free! I was very sad when classes ended. He is my absolute favorite teacher!
Quin was a great professor to have. This was my first quarter of college and he did a great job and the class didn't seem too different from a high school class. All his quizzes were open note, book, and partner quizzes. All his tests were open note and open book. If you do the homework every night you will do fine in the class.
I had this teacher three times. Best teacher hands down. Helpful, understands that students have lives and works around that. He wants you to succeed more than you want to succeed and earn an A. Best math teacher at WCC.
Doug is the best teacher in the school. Very helpful, very approachable. Awesome! Highly recommend
Doug is a wonderful teacher. He is extremely reasonable, extremely helpful.
Doug is a handsome older man chock full of teaching wisdom. For this reason alone he needs to live forever and continue making the world a better place through mathematics! He does not encourage neediness, but his teaching style leaves little to question. He makes math seem like a magic show. Its great! You won't lose interest.
Easiest math class I've taken, Doug is funny and his tests are what he teaches, not random, I reccomend him to all
Awesome teacher! Doug is super helpful to everyone and his personality fits well with his approach to math. He will break a concept down over and over if you are struggling with it. His humor is great and he definitely keeps the class lively. I recommend the class and think Doug is a high quality teacher
Doug was a great teacher. He was funny but also did a great job of teaching. Most of the homework was out of the book but he also gave out assignment that he made. He makes his own test and quizzes too. He gives out a lot of take-home quizzes, which is great practice. He gives out a decent amount of extra credit and test.
Gave test every few days to check attendance and to make sure you understood. Class schedule was get in, review test, learn new material (if any), get a new test, get out. The tests are one paged and fairly easy. End of quarter final was half take home half in class for us. Textbook was for homework only.
Doug was a far different math professors than any of my others this can be seen as both good and bad. His lectures arent 100% clear, and they often run very short. TONS of quizzes throughout the quarter give you NO reason to do bad on his tests. His final is very fair (all questions from section tests). All in all, hes a great guy and a fair grader
The greatest math professor I've ever had. Definitely the best at WCC. I got a B in the class and I SUUUUUCK at math. I didn't miss a single day, or an assignment. But like, I really suck at math so I'll live with a B. You need to take him.
Doug was BY FAR my favorite teacher at Whatcom. He goes way out of his way to help you. He even lets you use notes on all the test and gives take home quizes. Anything you don't understand he will do whatever he can to make sure you do. It's almost impossible to do poorly in his class unless you skip or don't take advantage of his help. He's perf.
I loved taking math with him! Best math professor I've ever had. His class is really easy and you have lots of opportunities to improve your grade. Doesn't check homework. Gives a ton of quizzes and drops the lowest one; all quizzes and tests are open note and open book. He even ended up not making us take the final if we liked our grade. Love it.
Doug is a nice man but his lectures are not clear. When explaining new material he goes over the easiest problems and leaves the tough ones for you to figure out on your own. He made a mistake on one problem on a test and STILL held students accountable and several students were upset. I will not take him again I got an A, but I had to work at it
Doug Quinlin helped make math easier for me. He gave plenty of opportunities to improve test grades by giving replacement exams. He didn't grade homework but gave weekly quizzes and I really liked his teaching style.
Doug is an amazing math teacher, I highly recommend him! He always had me laughing and is really laid back, which made his class enjoyable. All quizzes are take home and he lets you work with classmates! Tests are open book and open note. Loved him!
Tough grader but tests were open note, so it balanced out. Good instructor
Doug's an awesome math teacher, i had him for 141, by far the most clear, concise teacher i've ever had. He expects you to do your work but he is there for you, and really wants you to succeed. Lectures are clear and homework is reasonable, tests have extra credit and he provides a wash test. I Highly recommend him if you get the chance.
Doug is, by far, the best teacher I've ever had. I always thought that I just wasn't any good at math, but it turns out that's not true! I just needed to be engaged with the material, and Doug does that for all of his students. He tailors each class to the strengths and weaknesses of the group, ensuring that each student is successful.
He is very good at explaining the material and will explain over again if class doesn't understand. Everything is clear and makes sense. He actually makes math fun. And is very caring and loving towards his students.
one of the best teachers at Whatcom, totally recommend him.
Amazing teacher. I took PreCalc in high school two years ago and the amount that I learned in this quarter is more than that whole high school year. He won't move on if people don't understand something. Plus he drops 4 lowest quiz scores. Has great sense of humor too. A major plus is that he's super hot too!! The few hairs he has will turn you on
One of the best math professors at Whatcom Community College, and perfect for both confident students and those nervous about higher-level math. His lectures always have humor, and they're always great to attend. If you want pre-calculus to be a good experience, Quinlan is your professor.
He explains every concept very concisely and helps guide you every step. Definitely great for an entry level Math course.
He does not use the textbook at all, he creates his own problems for homework and tests. The homework is easy if you attend class and take good notes. The quizzes are take home and you can work with other people. The tests are similar to the homework and quizzes. Note that when taking the tests there are two versions of the test.
Doug dosent use a textbook at. Not a lot of homework, and is easy if you actually come to class and take notes. The quizzes are take home. The tests look very similar to homework and quizzes. However, when taking a test note that there are two versions of the test. The person sitting next to you will not have same version. Creates his own problems
Doug doesn't use textbook. Take attendance first few days of the quarter. There are pop-up quizzes (take home quizzes), so make sure that you show up in class. Homework is not required to be done. Tests are similar to the homework, and you can open note ( except asking classmates). Also, there are 1-2 extra-credit questions on quizzes and tests.
Doug's a nice guy, but I personally think he is a terrible teacher. His approach to math is to simplify it, yet he oversimplifies it to where it's impossible to learn if you aren't naturally good at it. Fortunately, he does a lot of makeup tests, extra credit, etc., probably just so his students can pass.
Easy A class, show up once in a while and get A. He gives a lot of pop quizzes, but he doesn't take attendance. Drop the lowest ones, so if you miss a few quizzes, it doesn't matter anyway. If you cannot get A, there is something wrong with you because he is super laid back and his tests are pieces of cake. You just need to write the results. Chill
Doug is an awesome math teacher! took him both 98 & 99. As long as you show up to class, take notes, and do the quiz he give you you'll do fine. I hadn't done math for at least 3-4 years and still did really well in his class. For sure would recommend him.
Amazing profesor who always tries his best to help his students. Explains equations and shows student how to solve each steps clearly. He is also a funny person who shares lots of jokes, you would never get bored. I would definitely take classes with him again.
Quinlan should have got 5 stars . His teaching method is easy to understand and the way he teaches is hilarious, I wouldn't get bored in his class.
A true example of what a professor should be like. He cares about the learning of his students, and always does what's best for the class. If the class is behind schedule a bit, he pushes back the test and will not force it on us (unlike profs I've had in the past). He lets you use resources on tests such as notes, which helped me tremendously.
Doug was a great professor for pre calc. He explains things very well, and if you don't get something right away, he encourages you to ask questions. You have to work for your grade in this class, but Quinlan gives you many chances to bring your grade up. At the end of the quarter he drops your 4 lowest quiz grades, and gives a replacement test.
he is the best math teacher i have ever had
He is one of the best math teacher I've ever had! his exams are as easy as the homework. take good note, do homework and listen to his lecture ( which is easy to understand) so you can get A.
Doug is an awesome prof that wants you to succeed in his class and in life. His methods are clear and easy to understand. Not too much homework and if you show up to class and pay attention it shouldn't be hard to pass at all.
as long as you show up, do the quizzes and your homework, you'll pass
Best math teacher on earth. Super caring and very knowledgeable with math. Would definitely recommend to everyone to choose him over any other math teacher!! He is awesome!
Lots and lots of quizzes. I think 18 all quarter. Just show up and do the homework and ask questions and youll do fine. Pushes tests back if the class as a whole isnt getting something. I would definitely take his class again. Hes a funny dude that enjoys what he does.
I was amazed to find that all of our assignments and tests were handwritten and made by Professor Quinlan. This alone shows how much he cares. He gives a lot of information in one class day, so, unless you are willing to go to class EVERYDAY do not take his class. He arrives thirty minutes before every class day to help with homework.
Best math teacher ever!!! Very caring, explains things very well, supportive, and always looking to help.
He is the best teacher I have had. He is so nice and super easy. Although there are a lot of tests and quizzes, they are easy and each test also has extra credit. He teaches so well and I can understand most of the lessons. I highly recommend you to take his class.
Engaging professor. Teaches math the way he thinks it is the most understandable. Unique class. Fun personality and knows his math. He clearly enjoys teaching. There are lots of tests but he had a flexible grading system that helped your grade reflect your growth in learning.
Super fun class
I had Quinlan for pre-calc 1 and I really liked his teaching style. He keeps things light and funny to help you understand the examples in a relaxed environment. He lets you use all of your notes and past quizzes for tests which basically gives you an A. All you need to do as a student is take notes and practice what you have trouble with.
I have had the pleasure of taking two classes with Mr. Quinlan. All around great math teacher. He keeps things simple and easy to understand without a lot of the complicated mathematical jargon. Also is very humorous and light hearted. He is understanding of students needs. If you regularly attend and do the homework/ quizzes should easily pass.
By far the best math teacher I've had. I used to hate math but thanks to him I kind of enjoy it now. He made the material so easy to understand and there was never any surprises on quizzes. If you showed up everyday and did the work it was an easy A.
Quinlan has a teaching style that makes learning fun and enjoyable. Be prepared to spend time doing the homework; your investment will payoff when you take the tests. Highly recommend!
Quinlan is the best teacher ever. He explains the lessons really carefully and he always give you a chance to fix your score.
I would take any class w Quinlan. Most caring and adaptive teacher I've had at Whatcom. Truly cares and wants to understand the learning styles of his students. And really, if you can't get an A in a class that lets you use your notes on a test, then maybe your own motivation is what's lacking. If you really want to do well in his class you will.
He starts out seeming great. Open notes on test, etc. But then you get daily or ever other day pop quizzes that are 30% of your grade. Each is worth 10 points. So don't plan on skipping. Oh, and then he does not give any partial credit. He'll even mark correct answers wrong if theyre written exactly the way he calls right.
Quinlan is one of the kindest teachers. If you're not a math-brain, don't be afraid to ask him questions during the lecture! If you don't ask, he'll rightfully assume everyone understands the concept and move on. He teaches math differently than other teachers, so take good notes, ask questions and meet him during office hours! It helps a lot.
Quinlan is a baller. I loved his 141 class that I took in the 2017-2018 school year. It was a tough transition into college math but he was very fair about giving us chances to make up our scores in the class. He also doesn't use a textbook so if this is the only math class you have to take, you get to save a few bucks.
The professor is literally perfect. I just wish he taught higher level math like calculus more often. I want to take him for all my math. Teachers take lessons from Quinlan!!!
