Awesome teacher, the best I've had at Douglas by far.
There should be more teachers like Doug
The Best Professor ever and hot too!!!
The most brilliant man. I strive to be more like him-A role model/great person!

Very good teacher
Great teacher, nice, tries to be funny sometimes angry? Anyways, good class

Can u take our history teachers place? cause i hate her!!!!!
Great teacher...very smart.
smart, witty, cyncial and sexy a great guy
This man should not be a teacher. He is as clear as mud, and as angry as a virgin.
swears a lot, don't talk during a lecture or he freaks, kinda a hippie, hates cell phones

Simak is amazing, and truly _educates_. But I would recommend him only to students who have a sincere interest in the subject. I implore all the others to stay away from him--he bites.

He has a clear and interesting teaching style; classes are fun.
Doug is an awesome teacher! forces you to think! dont mention cellphones or reality tv.
One word...FREAK!! Gets angry at stupid things and looks like his little beady head is going to pop off when he yells. Suggestion to Doug: Do not teach nursing, it's not your area!
I had Doug Simak for philosophy 151 and he was one of the best teachers I've ever had. I've taken courses at UBC and many of the profs there don't care 1/10 as much as this guy does about his job. He breaks down all the hard concepts and very fair.
People who thought he was anything but a fantastic teacher are the ones who skipped all the classes. He is energetic, enthusiastic, and breaks everything down by giving clear examples that us youth today can understand fully. I loved his class!
Great teacher. Inspires us to think about our world views. You would have to be a total moron to walk away from this class without being a better, more motivated person. Will take him again for sure.

his class is easy, really easy! but he has bad temper, DO NOT talk in class

Inspiring. Makes students see the world in a whole new light. Patient. Explains concepts well. Caring and passionate about his work. Great teacher. I learned more about life in his class than I have in any other course at Douglas. So interesting.
really short-tempered, dont ****him off by coming late or talking in class, but otherwise a really good professor, clear and easy marker
he's a really easy marker, gets ticked off at lil' things but a VERY FAIR MARK, wicked class to boost up that gpa!
Doug is a great guy, has sort of a crazy genious thing going on. He can explain some tough concepts in ways so that even the dumbest people can understand them. If you are willing to show up and listen to him, you'll learn a lot.
He's a really funny teacher, who makes class fun and things easy to learn. He makes sure that the whole class knows what there doing before he proceedes with the next lesson.

he's great! such a funny man,and NO EXPENSIVE TEXT BOOKS!just dont ever ****him off by talking in class.i took this course at a uni lvl before. trust me,he's really easy.his lec are very clear cuz he gives simple examples and repeats everything so u get familar eventually
The course is really reasonable. U don't have to buy a text book. He understands students and his notes are very helpful for the tests and assignments. We get lots of practice before the tests, the only mistake u'll make are stupid mistakes. He spends lots of time for his teaching, and u'll c it!
awesome teacher. Really loves what he's doing. Don't talk in his class though.
Great teacher, very clear, very helpful. No text book(save your money~~)Tests are fair and easy if u follow his instruction. High recommend~~
There is no text book for this class, but I wished there was one when I took it.Be on time for class!Cell off in class! No talking in class! The course materials looked harder than they seem. Some students can grasp them right away,it may take longer for some to understand them.Get a binder, expect a lot of handouts.Form a study group,it may help.
1103 was a lot better than 1101, loved the 1103 class, but 1101 sucked, hes a good prof, he can be a prick, dont get on his bad side...
i love his classes. he looks scarry but he is kind to students who does her best. he hates students being late and talking in his class but isnt it natural? i cant forget how he is kind to me when i had health problem. also, he respects students opinion. i recommend his class if u can be a sincere student.
Excellent prof...Amazing lecturer
He Sucks !
I Loved this class. he didnt care about attendace but it makes it much easier to understnad the material. in depth explinations, he is great. the reason im thinking about majoring in Phil.
Awesome, straight-forward, hilarious, professor! He's very laid back and incredibly understanding if you're sick or late with good reason, but at the same time is easily offended if you are disruptive in anyway (he takes pride in his teaching). Overall, best professor as far as teaching skills go.
Doug is great at explaining even the most abstract concepts.Warning: this class is like math=all formulas, totally not what i expected but Doug made it clear even to a math ignoramus like me.he doesn't give about attendance, but i totally say don't miss a single class b/c you will be screwed,i missed one and i was lost.graded entirely from tests.
Peculiar personality, but it adds to his character and helps keep you attentive during lectures. Very knowledgeable(in the class I'm taking, anyways) and good at explaining anything you have a problem with. Easy class if you like math and can attend every class.
Hes awsome. He makes the material really interesting and explains everything in incredible fine detail. No he doesnt care about attendance but the course pak is pretty hard to fallow so being in class is a good thing. All marks are on tests. The whole course is ALL FORMULAS
doug simak is a frikin awesome teacher. he looks mad all the time but hes cool. he is a pretty easy marker... explains everything sooooooo well. GREAT NOTES... and he gets straight to the point. he lets us out when he is done teaching(good) attendence is not mandatory but he gives out good notes and explains them well so you should go to class.
doug is a nice guy....he loves what he teaches...and he explains things well. but when he marks ur papers he doesnt make notes so u dont know WHERE U SCREWED UP OR WHY U GOT A "B-". that relaly screwed me up...
Don't read the newspaper in his class and you'll do fine. seriously, He'll rip you to pieces. Good lecturer. Hard paper marker but not so hard on the exams which are essay based. Is Doug a Garg? You'll find out by the end of the class, or will you?
Doug is super.
Doug is VERY REPETITIVE (he makes things clear - but I was bored sometimes) His exams are easy (and if everyone bombs, he scales the marks) His lecture style is straight forward, but kind of boring. Overall a nice guy though (and he doesn't make you buy a text book - he provides the reading which is easy to understand). He's very helpful if you ask
VERY NICE GUY! he is very helpful, his lectures are very good and straight to the point! Gives lots of examples, very passionate about Philosophy, makes you listen to him all the time. I would recomend him. Course is very easy, no assignments, no homework, no presentations, just tests!!! and they are not too hard, he is a good marker!
He is a good teacher who can be abit moody when he sees something that shouldn't be happening in classroom which most professors just let go. He was trying very hard to get the students to understand the main concepts. I think he was good as a teacher but overall the course sucked. It wasn't boring but stuffs you don't find worth learning.
Doug was a pretty good professor. He was easy to understand and he was helpful when it came to teaching. He knew exactly what to say and he knew how to help if you did not understand.
You don't need to buy a book, he gives you all the notes. Tests are basically right from the notes, and if you go to class, he explains things even better... No cell phones or electronics in class, he got really mad at a few people during the semester who were texting during class. If you go to class and read the notes, u will do fine in the class.
Tests are basically from the notes... if you understand the notes, the test will be a breeze. Seems like a mean guy at first, but he's actually pretty good. No textbook. Class is good to go to because he explains things better than his notes. Overall i would take this teacher again.
Seems like a real nice guy...really hates technology though. I would have done better if I realized essay answers really meant to write essays...as opposed to what that means in business classes = write long answers. D'oh.
Great at explaining the concepts and theories in ethics and leaves his opinion out so you are given the chance to see how a certain theory sits with you. Don't bring your cell phone out in class, but isn't that common sense? Assignments and tests aren't too tough, just make sure you read directions closely.
Doug made this course very interesting to learn. I really enjoyed listening to him-the course content and the delivery method were superb. I enjoyed the class so much that I never missed a lecture, even when I was not feeling well. It was a mind opening experience. He is a #1 instructor. I would love to take more courses with him in future.
Best phil teacher. Has the best most clear way of describing the material. Very understanding person. Easy class, no pointless discussions or participation. Just show up for class, listen and learn.
He is a really good teacher... He explains everything very clear. He is one of the best prof I've had. The course requires enough reading and tests are all writing essays.
He's an alright teacher, very nice.. but the class is sooo boring and so repetative. If you think it's a GPA booster think again! And you get a lot of homework and reading, he doesn't mark it or grade it but if you don't do it you won't understand the tests. His methods are good, but its hard to stay focused.
He's an okay teacher. The class is BORING it's NOT a GPA booster and it's hard to stay foucsed and its very repetative. He comes across as being nice, but he gives you these looks and remarks all the time. Look else where.
Great teacher. He is very clear and explains things well. Although it isn't an easy gpa booster if you're interested in philosophy then he is definalty the teacher to go to! Amazing :)
Fun but sometimes boring. He was sick so I can understand why he doesn't want to be in class.
He is an amazing teacher, his passion in the subject comes through. He is extremely understanding. Don't let your cell phone go off in class :)
Doug is a great teacher. He knows his stuff and takes it very seriously. He gives you everything you need in handouts so all you have to do is study them and your set. If you need help he's there. Just participate, do the homework and you will do great. This is a great class for business students because it helps with negotiations.
If your thinking about taking the humanities course he teaches do it! There are lots of interesting guest speakers and topics addressed. Luckily he only talks for 2 of them. He is such a confusing lecturer and i don't know how he got enough education to qualify for this job, and hes very lazy he showed us the same video twice!
ok so i tool 3 of his classes and this guy is the VIP...i hav no interest in phil and i was never a hard studier my best grade was like b- average...doug looks mad all d time but his a cool guys. what i lov about him is that he is an amazingly easy grader amazingly...i got A,A,A+ in 3 of his classes and i only studied 1 hour a week for his class...
He has decent lectures, though they sometimes drag on and on. No textbook is good for saving money but if you miss a class, you need to get the handouts from someone. But Doug as a terrible temper and isn't respectful. I wouldn't take his class again.
He is a great teacher and very committed to his students. Looks pissed off all the time, but is actually a nice guy. However, he is not a slack teacher. He puts in effort for his classes, and in return he expects the same of his students- that means to not be surfing fb in class, be on time and do your readings.
Doug is amazing!! His lecture is very clear. U wouldnt be disappointed taking his cls. I wasnt interested in philo before, but he makes me love the course. Higly recommended!! Easy marker! Love Doug! ;) but remember not to spell his name wrong, otherwise he'll be unhappy! ;p its simak, not symach, or anything else. :D
Was doing his best to put up with tardiness. Did well to systematically explain the nature of arguments in Critical Thinking
We need more teachers like Dr.Simak! its hard to find a really good teacher so if you get a chance to take his class then take it!
TOUGH marker! Did my best for my papers, and recieved a low grade. He sounds clear, but confusing is his clear explanations sometimes. If you have problems with logic(bad at math for example),dont take the course as you will have problems following. But he is very knowlegeble,I was impressed to see someone who is so passionate about philosophy
He's awesome in lectures - I wish more instructors made the content so interesting! He's a tough marker, though, so be sure you prep well for tests! Also, there is no textbook, but TONS of handouts to compensate, so have a binder/folder handy!
He's actually a really nice instructor, even though he can be a bit cranky sometimes. Just make sure if you wanna show up to class, pay attention. If not, better not to show up rather than playing with your phone or fussing around. He takes students seriously. And prepare for final. It can be harder compared to the prev exams.
Great teacher, very passionate about philosophy. He's not big on textbooks - my books came up to less than 30 bucks. He gives you handouts instead, on what he discusses. linear style of teaching. No surprises, exams are written, but gives you the questions he will ask. Don't slack and don't be fiddling on your phone. You'll get on his bad side.
Doug is so eager to help. He makes things very easy to understand and truly cares about his students success. If you text in class he will rip your head off and punt it.
Never ever text in his class first off, secondly take his stuff seriously and you'll do fine on the exams. It tends to get tricky, so be careful! Only 3 tests in his class, relatively easy if you know your stuff. Nice guy, passionate about his stuff.
He is my ideal professor. Doug teaches you everything you need to know thoroughly. Can tend to be fairly dramatic to get his points across, but it is for the sake of the course. Always willing to help if you have any questions, even if he looks like he'd be cranky. Excellent course, excellent prof.
Dr. Simak is truly passionate about philosophy and teaching philosophy. His lectures are very clear , on topic. You wont need textbook , gives handout which covers everything in simple words. Its warning don't use cell phone/computer he is kinda allergic to those. He truly cares and very helpful. If you miss class , he would briefly review again.
He is quite dramatic while lecturing but that makes for an entertaining lecture! Otherwise the content would put me to sleep. He does a great job at making a dificult subject easy to learn. Drawback is that he hates cell phones so don't be on it while he is lecturing. He also does not e-mail, you have to call him if you need to ask a question.
Doug is not very tech savvy making the online transition difficult. He doesn't email. making contact hard. I think he would have been great in person but you spend a lot of time teaching yourself though all his worksheets, his lectures are hard to get through in one sitting (not his fault just not comfortable recording).
Doug's class was... interesting. At times, his attitude is very awkward and he's got some serious old man on his porch energy. The coursework was totally fine. Getting to know Doug he was an alright lad and I ended up having some good conversations with him.
Basically he doesn't fit online lectures he doesn't even know how to share his content in the class and email. So every single class is kinda like radio streaming and really unclear also just grades by 2 term exams and finals. Horrible.
Oh Gosh it was the most boring class i have ever taken!! Omg! The classs is only 3 exams, but they are not easy at all. I worked super hard for the first exam and i failed it. Do not take it for granted thinking it is easy. You have to see watch hours and hours of his video arrruggh gosh it was so painful and boring.
He makes his own textbook, that means you have to be present when hes teaching and be there for the many many handouts. Youll need a big binder. Make sure not to use phones cause he gets really mad about it. He's very nice overall though
A great professor. A little older and more aligned with traditional teaching customs. Doesn't use Blackboard, and despises computers. He's just over a year away from retirement. Just let him be. Great guy and willing to help if you ask. Very accommodating, just don't surf the web while in class. He'll get really mad. Do the worksheets!
