Very interesting and enthusiastic prof. Great stories. Awesome extra videos and class tours. Needs notes available online because of the fast pace of the class. Too much info to write down. Difficult exams. Did not eliminate unfair questions.

I didn't think he talked too fast. I was also very interesting and found him great. BUT THE EXAMS WERE RIDICULOUSLY HARD! I studied my butt off and attended all classes and only got a 6. This is my best subject! I don't regret taking it though.

Ive had several courses with Dr. Wardell and I am enrolled in classes because he is the prof. He is the smartest man i've ever met and he knows everything under the sun. He can include lecture material on the arts pertaining to psychology at that time.

Yes, the exams are more difficult than most, but this is chiefly due to the material. Dr. Wardell himself is an excellent professor. In short, this man knows his stuff, and he knows how to teach it. My only complaint lies with the sub-par textbook.

I have been in 3 of his classes, and he still acts like he doesn't know who I am. One of the classes was huge, but the other 2 less than 40 students. Being a little friendlier would not kill you Wardell, some of your students might be nice to get to know.

Have taken 339 and 435 both classes are excellent and very interesting. Exams are hard, you need to know your material, but are fair. Seems unapproachable but is actually easy to talk to, though he will pretend he dosen't know you in the hallway.

The worst teacher i have ever had at the university. Don't expect any help from him, he's really sour and VERY RUDE. I've never been so disgusted with a teacher. He shouldn't be teaching!

Definitely knows his stuff! Unlike most ppl I thought his exams were pretty easy--if u know your stuff! Study picky details from lecture/text AND applications/relations of info. Think about how patients would present clinically to avoid exam surprises!

Already taken 233 with Wardell,I am currently in 339 with him,next semester I have 435 with him. He is an amazing prof who knows not just the tiny current details, but ALL the background too. And he actually is very nice to talk to, don't be afraid!

He is an amazing professor. He knows all the current info and can answer just about any psych related question. I find his tests to be extremly easy and straightforward. I also think he is a really nice guy and willing to help students out!

Dr. Wardell is one of the most inspiring and interesting profs that I have ever had at the UofA. He is arrogant and pig-headed and he knows it, but he is amazing to listen to. Must know your stuff to get above class average on exams, which are difficult but fair. He's better in 339&435 than in 233!

I looked forward to going to this class more than any other ever in my uni. career! He was so interesting but I have heard that he's difficult to talk to out of class - what do I care - he's an amazing lecturer. The exams were hard, but the more you study - the better you do.

Wardell is admired by some for his intelligence which I grant him but interpersonal style is also high on my list of important qualities in a prof. If you like someone who has a God complex, he's your man.

An amazing lecturer! It's clear from his lectures that he has so much experience -- what he teaches is anyjthing but dry and academic. I have little interest in clinical psych, but took 3 classes from him because he makes them SO good. Tests are MC and test recall, like every psych course here.

Incredibly intelligent and experienced. Really knows what he is talking about, and he's a superb lecturer. It is by far the most interesting class I've had. That said, he can be difficult to work with, and can come across as rude and arrogant. The tests were fair, but tough. Study, study, study!

Wardell is oen of the smartiest people I've ever met. That's abut the niciest thing I can say about him or his class. The guy is the biggiest elitiest SOB I've ever met. He stupid m/c tests are ridiculously difficult and his style of teaching is horrible. Do not take Wardell's classes

I found his personality class (psyco 223) in credibly boring... I found it hard to pay attention, or take notes. It was one of the worst classes I took. I hope that his psyco 339 class will be better...

He has no social skills at all and when you do have to ask him a question he makes you feel like you are wasting his precious time. He just stands at the front of class and lectures, which is fine for a class of 200, but not 30! He could have made a 3 hour class at least somewhat interactive.

Tests are hard, but they are hard for EVERYONE. That's why the grades are adjusted for lower percentages. Awesome prof. Very interesting and funny; don't let the militaristic behaviour fool you. Awesome guy, and he doesn't put up with stupid people and stupid questions (that may be why he has bad reviews...).

he is sooo smart but his lectures are all over the place! You really need to read the textbook before coming to class to have any hope in understanding what he's talking about since he doesn't fully explain concepts. He chooses the most insignificant facts as MC questions

Definitely one of the most interesting lectures I've ever attended, although the depth and breadth of topics covered makes me feel a little nervous for the exam. I like how the lectures on 'STRESS' coincide with the onset of midterms. His class is kind of like receiving psychotherapy...

I agree, the man is absolutely brillant-he knows what he's talking about! However, he does Not know how to get what he knows through to the class. His lectures are all over the place, his "main points" are numerous-(and weren't even on the exam)the multiple choice questions test the most specific and minute details. A good pyschologist, not teacher

I've had 3 classes with Wardell and he is a brilliant lecturer- only prof who can make a 3 hour night class fly by painlessly.GO TO CLASS or you won't be able to answer his exam questions.you can just memorize some words, you have to understand the concepts behind them because his tests use different language.they are fair if you listen in class :)

Wardell is hard to understand, he makes things more abstract and complicated than need be. His exams are brutal, the multiple choice questions are usually a paragraph long. He should try to be more helpful and approachable to the students instead of just dictating his cluttered thoughts.

A gifted lecturer - 1 of the best I've ever had. Articulate, Very intimidating intellect & manner. Pay attention & come to class & you'll learn more fr. him than any other psych prof. Cracks lots of jokes but never smiles. Very inspiring to me but unfortunately, Unapproachable. Exams are hard but this is becausre he does not dumb down the subject.

His lectures are very interesting. His tests are sorta hard. You really have to know your stuff because they have 60 MC questions in 50 minutes so you don't have time to think. And the questions are like a paragraph long. Overall, not a bad teacher though. I would take another class with him.

Definitely knows his stuff, and contrary to popular belief, extremely approachable; you just have to be the one to approach. Helps when you need it, and you will, because he doesn't dumb anything down. Awesome lectures and a great sense of humour even though he seems really serious. Very willing to help hopeful grad-students. Have fun!

He goes extremely fast in lecture, so you have to stay on your toes. The class can be kinda dry, but every once in a while he'll crack a joke that you dont even see coming. If you go to talk to him about essays he expects you to know what you are talking about, and if you do, he is extremely helpful and genuinely wants you to do well.

the class is alright but seriously heed this ADVICE: SKIP THE TRIP TO ALBERTA HOSPITAL it is a total waste of time. You spend an hour walking through hallways, past cafeterias and gardens. This trip is just an advertisement to try to get you to volunteer. No treatment areas are accessible. SKIP IT!

Prof Wardell is a difficult teacher, his tests are famous for hitting you upside the head every time. The material in the exams is picky and not predominantly from any section of his class. This means you have to know it all and well. Most grad studies classes don't look at this class as a requirement so unless your really interested, skip it.

After so many classes, I've come to know Wardell's style very well. Yes, the tests can be tricky and you need to have studied, but if you take incredibly detailed notes (borrow a laptop, no jokes, you NEED it) you can get an A+ without too much trouble. And he can be quite funny at times, just catches you off guard!

One of the most interesting classes I've taken in my 3 years here yet also by far the most challenging psych class. If you take good notes, review them daily and read the textbook then you're guaranteed a good mark. It's not a hard class, just put in the work! I took a number of Psych courses from him in the 80s and 90s. He was not only a great prof, he was outstanding. Brilliant. Enjoy his classes kids, because when you get out in the real working world full of idiots and imbeciles in high places, you'll come to truly appreciate his rare intellect. Yeah, a little aloof. You'd rather have Mr. Dressup?

One of the few profs whose lectures provide insight beyond the textbook--going to class is worth it. He knows the materical inside out, critically analyzes everything, and really makes you think. Definitely recommend the class and the prof.

may know his stuff but it aint sh*t if he makes it difficult to learn..exam was brutal, wrote pages and pages of notes off lec. and text and still only ave.mark...not willing to help, makes faces if you "waste his time" by asking simple questions...subjective marking of essays..DONT have him unless you wanna work ur arse off for a mediocre mark!!

One of the most amazing profs I've ever had! If I could take every psych class with him I would! I looked forward to going to class. Cracks funny jokes when you least expect it. Highly recommend him to anyone interested in psychology.

Lots to learn... but he's the right person to be teaching it. Tonnes of experience and knows what he's talking about. Very funny - but deadpan - so not everyone gets his jokes. Sometimes hard to know what to study.

Though Wardell does present a LOT of info super quickly in his lectures (a fact he WARNS you about at the very beginning), it at least is never boring. And if you are a keener and read the text before I'm sure you don't have to write as much. Regardless, everything is RIGHT out of the text, and his tests are multiple choice and straightforward.

Exceptional lectures with great, frequently hilarious examples. Learned more from him about practical research literature appraisal than in 212 and learned more about the biology of psychopathology than in 377. His years of practical and teaching experience must help to put him head and shoulders above the average (weak) psych prof.

Wardell's classes are a painful experience. He's not a bad lecturer but there is little connection between what he says and what he wants you to read in the text book. His exams are very annoying. They seem to be designed mostly to make sure that the marks fall within his curve and therefore test your luck as much ormore than your knowledge.

His notes are very rehearsed. I think he gives the exact same lectures every year so he just talks and you try to write everything down. My hand got tired but he definitely knows his stuff. The class isn't hard, but you have to actually understand rather than just memorize information.

Probably the most knowledgeable prof I've had in psychology yet. Very interesting, keeps class moving along, excellent examples from clinical practice. I'd recommend the course to anyone.

Amazing class. All the research and stats are up to date. He is on the ball and knows his stuff. I liked the option of writing a paper to replace a midterm mark. Very fair exams.

I don't know understand where exactly the reviews before this came from. My experience with this prof. was not good. He definitely knows his stuff, but he goes so fast that you are pretty much left in the dust. Think of watching an auctioneer on speed, and you will get the point.

He's a good guy but he does go very fast and he warns u about it.Best thing is to bring a laptop or read the chapters before he lectures then u get a better idea what hes talking about and dont need to write everything he's saying.

I agree with sad face. ABNORMAL PSYCH / INTRO TO CLINIC PSYCHOLOGY--extremely hard to keep up without a laptop. has VERY skeletal notes online but drones on and on for the full class so you're scribbling furiiously to keep up. Online notes are so bad that one page equals about 3-4 classes. Didn't attend class once after last midterm but did ok.

He is very hard to follow. He does know his material, but that's because he's been teaching it for 20 years. He's getting to the point where he needs to retire. If you miss one of his classes it's hard to catch up. He wouldn't make an exception so that I could write an essay even though I was 2 marks away from the min mark on a midterm to do so.

He is extremely well versed in the subject matter, and is quite clear on points of importance throughout the course. He does talk ALOT, meaning yep, you gotta stay on top of things for notes. Very helpful when discussing essay topics and strategies. (as a note, the min. essay qualifying mark is a C, which is quite manageable)

This is not a class that you can breeze through. It's not hard but you do have to do the work. Attend class and read the textbook. The paper will help your mark and Dr. Wardell is VERY helpful if you ask for it. He will help you refine your topic and even give you important sources to look at. Very helpful. Very interesting class.

It's advisable to read the textbook first if you want to keep up with this fast-talking, vivacious man and his informative, charmingly delivered lectures. He is responsible for my current interest in psychology ? he gave my waning spirits a welcomed boost and renewed my interest in the field. Great course, better teacher.

Definitely not classes you can sleep through. He's a strict prof, very rigid but so long as you read the text before you attend class, stuff makes sense. Moderate exams, all multiple choice. Definitely need to review before hand.

First B i got in my Uni career. Prof seems to know his stuff but doesn't know how to teach it. Disparity between content structure in lectures and in text makes it difficult to know what's going on. 60 mins for 60 questions in each exam- BUT HE INCLUDES TIME HANDING OUT THE EXAM. Minutia in exams= Bring House or a diagnostician with you to write.

Dr.Wardell is a brilliant professor and I would recommend him to anyone. You really need to keep up with his notes (not a lot of pauses), but his classes are well worth it. Tests are no difficult as long as you keep up with things. Uses an adjusted curve that is very fair and offers and optional essay to boost your mark.

Amazing lecturer who is extremely helpful if you take the time to see him. His written questions are a challenge; he asks you to "discuss" certain topics and will only give marks to things he discusses in class, and not to things in the text. Make sure you pay attention in class and take good notes.
